Location of Bahagia Market on K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid streets, Kubu Raya regency. Bahagia Market has been operation for two years but doesn’t have wastewater treatment, the liquid waste product is discharged directly into the waters. The purpose of this plan is to knowing the discharge of wastewater generated, so the treatment is adjusted to the quality of wastewater and the available land area, as well as calculating cost budget. Planning methods is area survey, data collection, waste inventory, sampling, quality analysis, calculation of wastewater discharge, planning of wastewater treatment, and calculation of cost budget. The planning results are Bahagia market has 11 stalls, 64 loss and 43 tables with 3 drains. The liquid of wastewater come from the washing of vegetables, fish, meats, and poultry. BOD, COD, TSS, and ammonia parameters are above quality standards, while total coliform, fat and oil are below quality standards. Wastewater treatment project for the 5 next years starting from 2023 to 2027 with wastewater effluent is 8640 liters/days. Treatment unit use are sump well, bar screen, rotating biological contactor, settling basins, disinfection tub, and sludge drying bed with a land area of 5 m2 and a cost budget of Rp. 69,315,479.

The use of Internet of Things (IoT) in industries is not new; however, the amalgamation of IoT and Biotechnology is still less explored. IoT in wastewater treatment comes with a full suite including cloud and its corresponding ecosystem. The available cloud‐based systems are advantageous, but costly and tightly coupled to their own cloud infrastructure. Opportunities are limited for the creation of a hybrid/multiple cloud model as it's difficult to integrate with the legacy system(s) and/or customized systems. The current investigation focuses on designing architechture of an open source IoT platform on an effluent treatment plant (ETP) protoype of textile industry. The designed prototype includes physical (adsorption) and biological (Rotating Biological Contactor, RBC, immobilized with white rot fungus) processes. IoT has been used for automated data monitoring of pH and ultrasound (for effluent flow from one tank to another, with respect to the water level, for processing). The process operated under an optimized pH (6.53±0.15) with reduction of representative wastewater quality parameters, biological & chemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids and optical density by 78.9, 52.15, 91.6, 20.3 and 88.8%, respectively. This study focuses on a lab‐scale rotating biological contactor (RBC) treating vegetable oil wastewater with high BOD and COD. The fabricated RBC was checked for efficiency in degrading polluted wastewater under different operating conditions. The maximum removal efficiencies for BOD and COD were 95.75% and 89%, respectively. This high removal percentage was obtained with 30% submergence of 10 discs rotating at 8 rpm. For the first time, bio‐kinetic models were applied to the experimental results for vegetable oil wastewater. The best fit was obtained with the modified Stover‐Kincannon and Grau model. The saturation constant (Ks) values were 1.872 and 3.024 g/L/d for BOD and COD, respectively, for the modified Stover‐Kincannon and Grau model. For the Grau second‐order model, the saturation constant was 1.416 and 3.744 g/L/d for BOD and COD, respectively. The predicted effluent BOD and COD values of the modified Stover–Kincannon model fitted almost exactly with the experimental values. This clearly predicts that this model can be best used to predict effluent BOD and COD concentration in a Rotating Biological contactor treating vegetable oil wastewater. The performance of a continuously operated laboratory-scale rotating biological contactor (RBC) was assessed for the removal of heavy metals viz. Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) from synthetic wastewater using artificial neural networks (ANNs). The RBC was inoculated with Sulfate Reducing Bacteria consortium (predominantly Desulfovibrio species), and the performance was evaluated at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and inlet heavy metal concentrations. A feed-forward back-propagation neural network model was developed using 90 data sets obtained over a period of three months, to predict the removal of heavy metal (HMRE) and COD (CODRE). The predictive capability of the model was evaluated in terms of the coefficient of determination (R) and mean absolute percentage error between the model fitted and actual experimental data, whereas sensitivity analysis was performed on the input parameters by determining the absolute average sensitivity (AAS) values. The higher AAS value of the HRT compared with that of inlet heavy metal concentration suggested that the change of HRT has a significant influence on HMRE and CODRE. Overall, the results obtained from this study demonstrated that ANNs can efficiently predict RBC behaviour with regard to heavy metal and COD removal characteristics under the prevailing operational conditions. The rotating biological contactor (RBC) is resistant to toxic chemical and shock loadings, and this results in significant organic and nutrient removal efficiencies. The RBC system offers a low-energy footprint and saves up to 90% in energy costs. Due to the system's low-energy demand, it is easily operable with renewable energy sources, either solar or wind power. An RBC was employed to degrade pollutants in domestic wastewater through biodegradation mechanisms in this study. The high microbial population in the RBC bioreactor produced excellent biological treatment capacity and higher effluent quality. The results showed that the RBC bioreactor achieved an average removal efficiency of 73.9% of chemical oxygen demand (COD), 38.3% of total nitrogen (TN), 95.6% of ammonium, and 78.9% of turbidity. Investigation of operational parameters, disk rotational speed, HRT, and SRT, showed the biological performance impact. Disk rotational speed showed uniform effluent quality at 30–40 rpm, while higher values of disk rotational speed (>40 rpm) resulted in lower effluent quality in COD, TN, and turbidity. The longer hydraulic retention time and sludge retention time (SRT) facilitated higher biological performance efficiency. The longer SRTs enabled the higher TN removal efficiency because of the higher quantity of microbial biomass retention. The longer SRT also resulted in efficient sludge-settling properties and reduced volume of sludge production. The energy evaluation of the RBC bioreactor showed that it consumed only 0.14 kWh/m3, which is significantly lower than the conventional treatment methods; therefore, it is easily operable with renewable energy sources. The RBC is promising substitute for traditional suspended growth processes as higher microbial activity, lower operational and maintenance costs, and lower carbon foot print enhanced the biological performance, which aligns with the stipulations of ecological evolution and environment-friendly treatment. Membrane fouling is a major bottleneck of almost all pressure-driven membrane filtration processes that limits their widespread applications. Improvement of hydrodynamics conditions is one of the most effective methods for membrane fouling control. This paper assesses a rotating biological contactor (RBC) integrated with membrane (RBC-MI) filtration that potentially offers inherent membrane fouling control as well as enhances biological performance, in which the membrane is placed inside the RBC bioreactor. Results show that the RBC-MI system achieves 84% of COD, 96.7% ammonium, 74% total nitrogen, 89% total phosphorus, and 96% turbidity removals. The integration of membrane placed inside the bioreactor doubles the permeability as compared to the external placement. Higher hydraulic performance is achieved at the low membrane-to-disk gap and higher disk rotational speed. The energy analysis shows that the RBC-MI consumes only 0.18 kWhm−3 signifying its viability as promission option to the energy-intensive conventional treatment systems.

The objective of this study was to investigate the changes of microbial communities in different treatment units of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) equipped with a serially combined rotating biological contactor (RBC) and anaerobic-anoxic-oxic-oxic (A²/O²) processes. Highthroughput sequencing results showed that functional communities including Methylotenera, Nitrospiraceae, Terrimonas, Zoogloea, Lysobacter, and Rhodobacter were the most dominant communities in the treatment system. The sequencing results demonstrated that the microbial communities along the different treatment units showed distinct community profiles. Additionally, dominant functional communities with Methylotenera and Methanolobus were significantly enriched on RBC films compared to those in the activated sludge of the RBC treatment unit, indicating that the RBC plays essential functions in the WWTP. In general, thoroughly screening the microbial communities in WWTP equipped with RBC and A²/O² and monitoring the changes over seasons contributed to maintain and adjust the wastewater treatment system in case of decayed treatment efficiencies. Phenolic compounds are amongst the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and are the most important environmental pollutants found in the waste effluent of many industries, including refineries, petrochemicals, steel industries, and iron foundries, with an average concentration of 10 to 2000 mg/l. Removing these compounds before releasing them in nature and reusing wastewater is accordingly of particular importance. Among phenol removal methods, biodegradation is an environmental friendly and cost effective method and rotating biological contactor (RBC) system is in particular recognized as one of the most efficient attached growth fixed bed wastewater treatment processes for stationary and advanced treatment with phenol removal efficiency of 85 to 99%. The advantages of RBC include resistance to hydraulic and organic shocks, little chance of creating anaerobic conditions, high sedimentation rate of sludge produced, low space requirements, very low energy costs, simplicity and easiness of operation, no need of expert personnel for supervision and operation, and low maintenance costs. The present review introduces RBC system, comparing with other phenolic purification methods, expressing the history, the reactor design and the operational parameters affecting it. Also the previous researches on phenol removal by RBC system has been evaluated.

Membrane fouling is a critical bottleneck to the widespread adoption of membrane separation processes. It diminishes the membrane permeability and results in high operational energy costs. The current study presents optimizing the operating parameters of a novel rotating biological contactor (RBC) integrated with an external membrane (RBC + ME) that combines membrane technology with an RBC. In the RBC + ME, the membrane panel is placed external to the bioreactor. Response surface methodology (RSM) is applied to optimize the membrane permeability through three operating parameters (hydraulic retention time (HRT), rotational disk speed, and sludge retention time (SRT)). The artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) are implemented to depict the statistical modelling approach using experimental data sets. The results showed that all three operating parameters contribute significantly to the performance of the bioreactor. RSM revealed an optimum value of 40.7 rpm disk rotational speed, 18 h HRT and 12.4 d SRT, respectively. An ANN model with ten hidden layers provides the highest R2 value, while the SVM model with the Bayesian optimizer provides the highest R2. RSM, ANN, and SVM models reveal the highest R-square values of 0.97, 0.99, and 0.99, respectively. Machine learning techniques help predict the model based on the experimental results and training data sets. Developing efficient landfill leachate treatment is still necessary to reduce environmental risks. However, nitrogen removal in biological treatment systems is often poor or costly. Studying biofilms in anoxic/aerobic zones of rotating biological contactors (RBC) can elucidate how microbial interactions confer resistance to shock loads and toxic substances in leachate treatment. This study assessed the nitritation-anammox performance in an intermittent-rotating bench-scale RBC treating mature leachate (diluted). Despite the leachate toxicity, the system achieved nitritation with an efficiency of up to 34 % under DO values between 0.8 and 1.8 mg.L−1. The highest average ammoniacal nitrogen removal was 45.3 % with 10 h of HRT. The 16S rRNA sequencing confirmed the presence of Nitrosonomas, Aquamicrobium, Gemmata, and Plantomyces. The coexistence of these bacteria corroborated the selective pressure exerted by leachate in the community structure. This study evaluated the water reuse potential for truck washing using the effluent treated by a Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) operated in full scale. In order to evaluate the reuse potential, a mass balance was performed for the reuse system taking into account the concentration of Total Dissolved Solids as the critical contaminant. The treatment system produced an effluent with average concentration of color, turbidity, TDS and BOD5 of 45 ± 14 uC, 15 ± 6.0 NTU, 244 ± 99 mg TDS / L and 14 ± 7.3 mg O2 / L, respectively. Based on the mass balance, and considering the TDS concentration established in NBR 13.696, if the final rinse does not use clean water, the potential for effluent reuse can reach 40%. However, if clean water is used as 30% of the total rinsing volume, it would be possible to reuse 70% of the treated effluent without compromising truck washing performance. This water reuse approach would result in an operational cost reduction of R$ 2,590.75/month.

The performance of greywater treatment through RBC (Rotating Biological Contactor) is related to many factors including rotational speed of disc, surface area of the media, thickness of biological film; quality and flow rate of influent. The plastic media provides surface for biological slime. The slime is rotated alternatively into the settled wastewater and then into atmosphere to provide aerobic conditions for the microorganisms. In this study the performance of RBC is investigated at different flow rates and disk areas of media by introducing additional discs on the shaft of RBC. Initially efficiency of the RBC was observed on six flow rates at the disc area of 9.78m2. Furthermore optimized three flow rates were used to augment the disk area. The efficiency of RBC system was improved significantly at disk area of 11.76m2 and flow rate of 20 L/h. Under these conditions the removal of BOD5 (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and TSS (Total Suspended Solid) was observed 83, 57 and 90% respectively

Conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are not able to remove completely some emerging contaminants, such as residual pharmaceutical compounds (PCs) with potential ecotoxicity to water bodies. An advanced bio-oxidation process (ABOP) using white-rot fungi (WRF) has been proposed as alternative biological treatment for degradation of non-biodegradable compounds. A synthetic and real wastewater spiked with 12 PCs at 50 μg L−1 was treated by means of ABOP based on WRF in a rotating biological contactor (RBC) at 1 day of hydraulic retention time (HRT). The ABOP achieved a remarkable biological performance in terms of TOC removal and reduction of N-NH4+ and P-PO43− nutrients. Likewise, 5 of the 12 PCs were eliminated with removal efficiencies ranging from 80 to 95%, whereas 6 of 12 PCs were eliminated with removal values ranging from 50 to 70%. The anaerobic digestion of the fungal sludge generated upon the treatment was also evaluated, obtaining a methane yield of 250 mL CH4 gVS−1. These results evidenced that the proposed ABOP is a promising alternative for the sustainable wastewater treatment of urban effluents, combining advanced oxidation with biological operation for the removal of emerging PCs and energy recovery. Cheese whey effluent contains biodegradable organic compounds in the range of 40 to 80 g. L–1. In this study, a three–stage rotating biological contactor was fabricated as a bench scale experimental unit to remove organic matters from cheese whey. First, the treatability of cheese whey effluent in the three–stage rotating biological contactor (RBC) was evaluated. Then the effect of extended specific surface area (SSA) and recirculation rate on COD removal was investigated. The obtained results showed that the organic removal rate increased with an increase in loading rate, till other limiting parameters affect the process. Prior to application of the designated modifications to the system, maximum COD removal efficiency at hrts of 24 and 36 h with OLR of 50 gcod.L–1.d–1 was 90 and 92.4%, respectively. The removal efficiency was improved as a result of increasing the SSA and recirculation rate. Also, recirculation rate may assist to increase the DO level of the wastewater, especially at high olrs. Pilot tests of a cubic-lattice-based rotating biological contactor were implemented to remove organic matter from wastewater from a milk factory and a hospital in Vietnam. In the milk factory wastewater, the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) removal ratio was stable between 60% and 90% (average 75%) using this method, with a BOD surface load of 0.002-0.020 kg•m-2•day-1. The average nutrient ratio of the raw wastewater was 0.13 of total nitrogen and 0.015 of total phosphorus compared with 1.0 of BOD. The BOD of treated water was less than 50 mg•L-1, achieving category B of the industrial wastewater standard of Vietnam (QCVN 40:2011). For the hospital wastewater, the BOD removal ratio was stable between 60% and 90% (average 78%), with a BOD surface load of 0.005-0.022 kg•m-2•day-1. The average nutrient ratio of the raw wastewater was 0.25 of total nitrogen and 0.018 of total phosphorus compared with 1.0 of BOD. The BOD of treated water was less than 50 mg•L-1, satisfying category B of the medical wastewater standard of Vietnam (QCVN 28:2010/BTNMT). The electric power consumption was 0.73 KWh•m-3 of wastewater. The sludge conversion ratio from BOD was 0.51 kg TSS•kg BOD-1 based on the excess sludge and suspended solids in raw wastewater and treated water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Under the impending demand of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) upgrading and reconstruction, it is feasible to propose a new process with low cost and high efficiency based on traditional process. Novel anaerobic-RBC-anoxic-oxic (ARAO) process was obtained after coupling traditional anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2/O) process with rotating biological contactor (RBC). Compared to traditional A2/O process, ARAO process has more efficient municipal wastewater treatment effect. Within 40 days of continuous operation, the average removal rates of COD, NH 4 +-N, TN and TP of sewage by ARAO process are 87%, 87%, 75% and 87%, respectively. The optimal operating conditions of ARAO process are the mixed liquor reflux ratio (MLRR) of 200%, the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) of 3500–4500 mg/L, the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of 2–3 mg/L and the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h. The enhanced enzyme activity of ARAO process compared with A2O was determined through extracellular enzyme activity (EEA) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and the microbial abundance and dominant species were further analyzed through high-throughput sequencing. The three-dimensional fluorescence measurement results showed a significant improvement in wastewater treatment efficiency. In addition, ARAO process has good adaptability to low temperature wastewater, low concentration wastewater and high concentration wastewater, which provides a good reference for the upgrading and reconstruction of WWTPs in the future. In this study, five urban WWTPs (Wastewater Treatment Plant) with different biological treatment (Extended Aeration Activated Sludge – EAAS; Rotating Biological Contactor – RBC), wastewater type (Urban; Industrial) and size, were jointly evaluated. The aim was twofold: (1) to analyze and compare their odor emissions, and (2) to identify the main causes of its generation from the relationships between physico-chemical, respirometric and olfactometric variables. The results showed that facilities with EAAS technology were more efficient than RBC, with elimination yields of organic matter higher than 90%. In olfactometric terms, sludge managements facilities (SMFs) were found to be the critical odor source in all WWTPs compared to the Inlet point (I) or Post primary treatment (PP), and for seasonal periods with ambient temperature higher than 25 °C. Moreover, the global odor emissions quantified in all SMFs revealed that facilities with EAAS (C-WWTP, V-WWTP and Z-WWTP) had a lower odor contribution (19,345, 14,800 and 11,029 ou E /s·m2, respectively) than for those with RBC technology (P-WWTP and NC-WWTP) which accounted for 19,747 ou E /s·m2 and 80,061 ou E /s·m2, respectively. In addition, chemometric analysis helped to find groupings and differences between the WWTPs considering the wastewater (71.27% of total variance explained) and sludge management (64.52% of total variance explained) lines independently. Rotating biological contactors (RBCs) are low-cost, efficient and an eco-friendly volatile organics control technique. In this study, a state-of-art disk-based RBC has been modified to a drum-based with sponge supporting medium and its performance at different inlet loading rates (ILR) of gaseous benzene, and its effect on elimination capacity (EC) and removal efficiency (RE) have been investigated. The results showed that the RE remained over 90% up to the ILR of about 8 g m −3 h −1 , and decreased to about 80% with the further increase in ILR. The EC reached maximum to about 45 g m −3 h −1 at a benzene load of about 69 g m −3 h −1 . The EC of benzene increased with the increase in loading rate, but the RE showed an opposite trend. The production of carbon dioxide, which determines the degree of pollutant degradability, also increased with the increase in EC. Along with benzene the nutrients (NH 3 –N and PO 4 –P) from liquid phase also got removed in RBC, which shows its potential application in industries. Furthermore, a potential benzene degrader was tentatively identified as genera Enterobacter . The maximum biodegradation rate (r max ) and half saturation constant (K s ) were determined as 21.46 g m −3 h −1 and 1.71 g m −3 , respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ecosystem pollution due to the lack of or inefficient wastewater treatment coverage in small communities is still a matter of great concern, even in developed countries. This study assesses the seasonal performance of 4 different full-scale wastewater technologies that have been used in small communities (<2000 population equivalent) for more than 10 years in terms of emerging contaminant (EC), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS) and NH 4 –N removal efficiency. The studied technologies, which were selected due to their widespread use, included two intensive treatment systems (an extended aeration system (AS) and a rotating biological contactor (RBC)) and two extensive treatment systems (a constructed wetland (CW) and a waste stabilization pond (WSP)), all located in north-eastern Spain. The studied compounds belonged to the groups of pharmaceuticals, sunscreen compounds, fragrances, antiseptics, flame retardants, surfactants, pesticides and plasticizers. The 25 ECs occurred in wastewater at concentrations ranging from undetectable to 80 μg L −1 . The average removal efficiency was 42% for the CW, 62% for the AS, 63% for the RBC and 82% for the WSP. All the technologies except the WSP system showed seasonal variability in the removal of ECs. The ecotoxicological assessment study revealed that, whilst all the technologies were capable of decreasing the aquatic risk, only the WSP yielded no risk in both seasons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
