This is Part 3 of a trio of papers that unify in a natural way the two historically distinct parallel discrete event synchronization paradigms, optimistic and conservative, combining the best properties of both into a single framework called Unified Virtual Time (UVT). In this part, we survey the synchronization effects that can be achieved by restricting to corner cases the relationships permitted among the control variables, GVT, CVT, TVT, and LVT, which were defined in Part 1. We also survey various throttling policies from the literature and describe how they can be implemented in UVT by controlling the value of TVT, including policies that can take advantage of rollback in addition to LP blocking. A significant result is a new category of efficient and higher precision throttling algorithms for optimistic execution that are based on optimistic lookahead, defined in a way that is symmetric to what we now call the conservative lookahead information that is traditionally used for conservative synchronization. Finally, we present a novel algorithm allowing the choice between lazy and aggressive cancellation to be made on a message-by-message basis using either external logic expressed in the model code, or policy code internal to the simulator, or a mixture of both. Purpose: No previous report has compared the differences in postoperative functional outcomes between posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)-retaining (CR-) and PCL-sacrificing (CS-) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with detailed intraoperative consideration of joint gap and balance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vivo function of preserved PCL in TKA by comparing postoperative functional outcomes between CR- and CS-TKA with a cruciate-substituting insert (CS-insert), considering intraoperative influence factors, such as the posterior tibial slope, posterior condylar offset, joint gap, joint balance, and joint laxity. Methods: A total of 55 knees in 38 patients (27 knees from 18 patients in the CR group, and 28 knees from 20 patients in the CS group) were analyzed. Fluoroscopic evaluation under anesthesia in sagittal laxity, rollback amount, and the maximum flexion angles were compared between the groups. Results: There were no significant differences in intraoperative or postoperative all measurement values between the two groups, but the sagittal laxity was significantly smaller in the CR group [5.4% ± 4.5% (2.4 ± 2.1 mm)] than in the CS group [9.0 ± 3.8% (4.0 ± 1.7 mm)] (P ​< 0.01). There were no significant differences in the amount of rollback and postoperative maximum knee flexion angle between the groups. Conclusions: Preserved PCL in TKA with a CS-insert contributed to knee sagittal stability, but not to rollback and deep knee flexion.

Introduction: The outcomes of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remain controversial, and we do not know which factors are important for successful outcomes. This study aimed to compare the mid-term outcomes of different conceptual designs by evaluating the radiological and clinical outcomes. Materials and methods: A total of 478 total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) were enrolled and allocated into groups I [posterior stabilizing (PS) with anterior referencing (AR)], II [PS with posterior referencing (PR), and III [ultra-congruent (UC) TKA)]. Preoperative findings, last follow-up clinical outcomes, and final follow-up radiological and indirect assessments of the femoral rollback were compared between the groups. Results: The mean follow-up period was 72.6 ± 12.9 months. The tourniquet was used samely applied to every group. Flexion contracture was significantly larger in group III than in groups I and II (3.3 ± 2.7, p < 0.001), and further flexion was significantly smaller in group III (130.0° ± 2.7°, p < 0.001). Among the radiological parameters, posterior osteophyte formation was the most common in group III (67.8%). The rollback distance was significantly smaller in group III than in groups I and II (p < 0.001). The active deep flexion angle was affected by the posterior condylar offset (PCO) ratio, and the contact point changed the distance (p < 0.05). Conclusion: PS TKAs showed better ROMs than UC TKAs; however, no differences were noted in the clinical outcome scales. The flexion angle was affected by the PCOR and rollback at both PS and UC TKAs. However, rollback negatively affected the flexion angle during UC TKAs. An inappropriate femoral rollback was identified, and femoral osteophyte formation was determined to be the most prominent in UC TKAs. Level of evidence Level III comparative study. Background: Recent evidence supports that restoration of the pre-arthritic condition via total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is associated with improved post-TKA performance and patient satisfaction. However, whether the restored pre-arthritic joint line simulates the native mid-flexion biomechanics remains unclear. Objective: We performed a matched-pair cadaveric study to explore whether restoration of the joint line via kinematically aligned (KA) TKA reproduced native knee biomechanics more accurately than the altered joint line associated with mechanically aligned (MA) TKA. Methods: Sixteen fresh-frozen cadaveric knees (eight pairs) were affixed onto a customized knee-squatting simulator for measurement of femoral rollback and medial collateral ligament (MCL) strain during mid-flexion. One knee from each cadaver was randomly designated to the KA TKA group (with the joint line restored to the pre-arthritic condition) and the other to the MA TKA group (with the joint line perpendicular to the mechanical axis). Optical markers were attached to all knees and rollback was analyzed using motion capture cameras. A video extensometer measured real-time variations in MCL strain. The kinematics and MCL strain prior to and following TKA were measured for all specimens. Results: KA TKA was better for restoring the knee kinematics to the native condition than MA TKA. The mid-flexion femoral rollback and axial rotation after KA TKA were consistently comparable to those of the native knee. Meanwhile, those of MA TKA were similar only at ≤40° of flexion. Furthermore, KA TKA better restored the mid-flexion MCL strain to that of the native knee than MA TKA. Over the entire mid-flexion range, the MCL strain of KA TKA and native knees were similar, while the strains of MA TKA knees were more than twice those of native knees at >20° of flexion. Conclusions: The restored joint line after KA TKA effectively reproduced the native mid-flexion rollback and MCL strain, whereas the altered joint line after MA TKA did not. This is Part 2 of a trio of works intended to provide a unifying framework in which conservative and optimistic synchronization for parallel discrete event simulations can be freely and transparently combined in the same logical process on an event-by-event basis. In this article, we continue the outline of an approach called Unified Virtual Time (UVT) that was introduced in Part 1, showing in detail via two extended examples how conservative synchronization can be refactored and combined with optimistic synchronization in the UVT framework. We describe UVT versions of both a basic time windowing algorithm called Unified Simple Time Windows and a refactored version of the Chandy-Misra-Bryant Null Message algorithm called Unified CMB. Algorithms for synchronization of parallel discrete event simulation have historically been divided between conservative methods that require lookahead but not rollback, and optimistic methods that require rollback but not lookahead. In this paper we present a new approach in the form of a framework called Unified Virtual Time (UVT) that unifies the two approaches, combining the advantages of both within a single synchronization theory. Whenever timely lookahead information is available, a logical process (LP) executes conservatively using an irreversible event handler. When lookahead information is not available the LP does not block, as it would in a classical conservative execution, but instead executes optimistically using a reversible event handler. The switch from conservative to optimistic synchronization and back is decided on an event-by-event basis by the simulator, transparently to the model code. UVT treats conservative synchronization algorithms as optional accelerators for an underlying optimistic synchronization algorithm, enabling the speed of conservative execution whenever it is applicable, but otherwise falling back on the generality of optimistic execution. We describe UVT in a novel way, based on fundamental invariants, monotonicity requirements, and synchronization rules. UVT permits zero-delay messages and pays careful attention to tie-handling using superposition. We prove that under fairly general conditions a UVT simulation always makes progress in virtual time. Igneous rocks in central Iran preserve proof of several episodes of Late Mesozoic–Cenozoic Neotethyan subduction, and record temporal and spatial variations from subduction to collisional geodynamic regimes that remain a subject of debate. We revisit magmatic rocks from the central Urumieh–Dokhtar magmatic arc (UDMA; 32° 30′ N to 36° 00′ N) and report new major and trace element analyses, whole-rock Sr–Nd–Pb-isotopic data and zircon U–Pb–Hf ages on plutonic rocks from the Kajan region. The data reveal magmatic pulses between 32 and 22 Ma that are represented by igneous rocks with geochemical and isotopic features resulting from melting of a metasomatized, enriched mantle. Modeling indicates the samples represent a mixture of 97% batch melt (from a source with 98.5% mantle melt +1.5% terrigenous sediment) with 3% upper continental crust. The oldest yielded age (i.e., 32 Ma) rules out a lull in magmatism in the central UDMA between 37 and 26 Ma and speaks against distinct flare-up magmatic episodes at ∼54–37 Ma and ∼ 20–5 Ma in the frontal arc. We hypothesize that magmatism records down-going slab tearing into two pieces beneath the central to SE UDMA, which then changes the geometry and buoyancy of subducting Neotethyan lithosphere. The down-going slab remained involved in central UDMA (i.e., rollback) during Early Miocene whilst arc retreat beneath the SE UDMA proceeded with detachment of subducted oceanic lithosphere (i.e., break-off). We hypothesize a diachronous collision in the UDMA, first in the southeastern segments, and subsequently in the central UDMA. These findings bear important implications for the geodynamic evolution of the Zagros orogen and run counter to a model suggesting that the collision initiated in the northwest to central and propagated progressively to the southeast along the Zagros suture zone. Abstract Consistency properties provided by most key-value stores can be classified into sequential consistency and eventual consistency. The former is easier to program with but suffers from lower performance whereas the latter suffers from potential anomalies while providing higher performance. We focus on the problem of what a designer should do if he/she has an algorithm that works correctly with sequential consistency but is faced with an underlying key-value store that provides a weaker (e.g., eventual or causal) consistency. We propose a detect-rollback based approach: The designer identifies a correctness predicate, say P, and continues to run the protocol, as our system monitors P. If P is violated (because the underlying key-value store provides a weaker consistency), the system rolls back and resumes the computation at a state where P holds.We evaluate this approach with graph-based applications running on the Voldemort key-value store. Our experiments with deployment on Amazon AWS EC2 instances show that using eventual consistency with monitoring can provide a 50–80% increase in throughput when compared with sequential consistency. We also observe that the overhead of the monitoring itself was low (typically less than 4%) and the latency of detecting violations was small. In particular, in a scenario designed to intentionally cause a large number of violations, more than 99.9% of violations were detected in less than 50 ms in regional networks (all clients and servers in the same Amazon AWS region) and in less than 3 s in global networks.We find that for some applications, frequent rollback can cause the program using eventual consistency to effectively stall. We propose alternate mechanisms for dealing with re-occurring rollbacks. Overall, for applications considered in this paper, we find that even with rollback, eventual consistency provides better performance than using sequential consistency.

To face the growing complexity of System-on-Chips (SoCs) and their tight time-to-market constraints, Virtual Prototyping (VP) tools based on SystemC/TLM2.0 must get faster while maintaining accuracy. However, the ASI SystemC reference implementation remains sequential and cannot leverage the multiple cores of modern workstations. In this paper, we present SCale 2.0, a new implementation of a parallel and standard-compliant SystemC kernel, reaching unprecedented simulation speeds. By coupling a parallel SystemC kernel with shared resources access monitoring and process-level rollback, we can preserve SystemC atomic thread evaluation while leveraging the available host cores. We also generate process interaction traces that can be used to replay any simulation deterministically for debug purpose. Evaluation on baremetal applications shows × 15 speedup compared to the ASI SystemC kernel using 33 host cores reaching speeds above 2300 Million simulated Instructions Per Second (MIPS). Challenges related to parallel simulation of full software stack with modern operating systems are also addressed with speedup reaching × 13 during recording run and × 24 during the replay run. • SystemC Standard parallel simulation can be achieved with interactions monitoring. • Process atomicity violation can be avoided most of the time with proper heuristic. • Rollback mechanism can recover from semantics violations when the heuristic fails. • Full software stack simulation in modern OS exhibits more atomicity violation risks. • Additional monitoring of the Virtual Prototype privileged state mitigates the risk. Late Cretaceous–Eocene granites are widespread in the Tengchong terrane and related to subduction and closure of the Neo–Tethyan Ocean. However, the reason of their compositional and spatial variations is still under explored. This study reports zircon U–Pb geochronological, whole–rock and Nd isotopic data for Guyong, Houqiao and Menglong granites in the Tengchong terrane. Our data show that the three plutons crystallized at 70.4 ± 0.3Ma, 64.4 ± 0.3Ma and 47.6 ± 0.2Ma. Guyong monzogranites show an I–type affinity and may have experienced fractional crystallization of plagioclase, biotite and sphene. Negative εNd(t) values (−9.19 to −11.01) with two-stage model ages (T2DM = 1.59–1.78 Ga) indicate that Guyong monzogranites are derived from a predominantly Paleoproterozoic crustal source with little involvement of mantle–derived materials in an extensional setting. Lower εNd(t) (−9.33 to −11.63) and negative correlations of HREE, LREE, Th, and Y vs. SiO2 indicate that Houqiao plutons are S–type granites derived from a pure crustal source during crustal thickening. Low Zr/Hf and Nb/Ta ratios, zircon saturation temperature (TZr = 750°C–786°C) and negative δEu (0.11–0.40) of Menglong biotite granites indicate that they have experienced fractional crystallization of plagioclase, biotite and sphene. Relatively high εNd(t) (−6.81 to −7.07) values indicate that they are products of felsic magma mixed with mafic magma, which is also supported by numerous coeval mafic–intermediate rocks (Eocene) such as metagabbros, diorites and MMEs (mafic microgranular enclaves) in the western Tengchong terrane. A process of slab rollback and slab breakoff may have triggered the late Cretaceous–Eocene magmatism and the compositional variation of associated granitoids in the Tengchong terrane. Recent advancements in sensor, mobile computing, and wireless communication technologies is creating new opportunities to effectively exploit real-time traffic data. Onboard vehicles collect, process, simulate traffic states in a distributed fashion and a local transportation management center coordinates the overall simulation with an optimistic execution technique. Such a distributed approach can provide more up-to-date and robust estimates with decreased communication bandwidth requirements and increased computing capacity. This paper proposes an online ad hoc distributed simulation. The physical operating platform for the model including operating system, communicational middleware, and traffic simulation model are described. Also, this paper investigates the analytical background of rollback process of the proposed ad hoc distributed simulation model. Flow rate diagram and cumulative number of vehicle diagram show that the overall system simulation speed and estimate accuracy may differ significantly as a function of the selected threshold. Growing evidence supports that the widely developed Mesozoic folds and magmatism in the South China Block are attributed to the flat‐slab subduction, followed by slab steepening, of the Paleo‐Pacific Plate (PPP). However, the dynamics of the transition from flat‐ to steep‐slab subduction, as well as the relationship between tectonic processes and surface deformation and magmatic events, are poorly constrained. Using a 2‐D thermomechanical numerical model, we systematically investigate the effects of slab rollback or delamination following the eclogitization of a subducted oceanic plateau on the surficial topography, structural deformation, and magmatism. Our results indicate that the subduction of an oceanic plateau drives flat‐slab subduction, which further leads to the development of a wide thrust fault zone, an uplifted and magmatically active foreland, and the foreland basin subsidence. This model is further complicated by the transition from flat‐ to steep‐slab subduction through slab rollback or delamination which is controlled by the subduction rate and the timing of oceanic plateau eclogitization. The comparisons between our numerical results and the geological data from South China reveal that the slab delamination model reproduces the regional evolution of the Mesozoic South China. Based on our models, we suggest that the eclogitization during flat‐slab subduction is not instantaneous, which is instead at least 18 Myr after the oceanic plateau reaches the ideal conditions of phase change. Background: Predicting patients at risk of a poor outcome would be useful in patient selection for total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Existing models to predict outcome have seen limited functional implementation. This study aims to validate a model and shared decision-making tool for both clinical utility and predictive accuracy.Methods: A Bayesian belief network statistical model was developed using data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative. A consecutive series of consultations for osteoarthritis before and after introduction of the tool was used to evaluate the clinical impact of the tool. A data audit of postoperative outcomes of TKA patients exposed to the tool was used to evaluate the accuracy of predictions.Results: The tool changed consultation outcomes and identified patients at risk of limited improvement. After introduction of the tool, patients booked for surgery reported worse Knee Osteoarthritis and Injury Outcome Score pain scores (difference, 15.2; P < .001) than those not booked, with no significant difference prior. There was a 27% chance of not improving if predicted at risk, and a 1.4% chance if predicted to improve. This gives a risk ratio of 19× (P < .001) for patients not improving if predicted at risk.Conclusion: For a prediction tool to be clinically useful, it needs to provide a better understanding of the likely clinical outcome of an intervention than existed without its use when the clinical decisions are made. The tool presented here has the potential to direct patients to surgical or nonsurgical pathways on a patient-specific basis, ensuring patients who will benefit most from TKA surgery are selected. A novel geodynamic evolution model of the southwestern region of Gondwana from the late Triassic to the middle Jurassic period is proposed in this contribution, based on new data collected in the Patagonian region and an exhaustive bibliographic review. New geochemical data of La Leona Fm. (Deseado Massif) and a new zircon U/Pb age (207.6 + 4.1/−2.3 Ma), added to a compilation of previous geochronological and geochemical data, allow confirming the existence of an Upper Triassic magmatic arc in central Patagonia, with typical adakitic features. This volcanic arc developed about ~1000–1100 km away from the hypothetical paleo-trench (at its most distal portion) in and intraplate position. New geological mapping carried out in the surrounding areas of these arc-related products allowed recognizing an important and previously underestimated late Triassic contractional episode that affected the south-central Patagonian region, which can be correlated with multiple events of deformation in southwestern Gondwana as far as in the Cape and Sierra de la Ventana fold belts. After this contractional episode, the Jurassic Chon Aike Silicic Large Igneous Province (SLIP - Deseado Massif and North Patagonian Massif) outbursts from a crustal source linked to a mantle thermal anomaly, as new geochemical data and previous data indicate. New and previous structural, geochemical, and geochronological data allow us to propose the existence of a late Triassic-earliest early Jurassic flat-slab episode (~227–190? Ma), here referred to as the South Gondwanian flat-slab , comparable in size with the largest present and previously documented flat-slab configurations on Earth. This event would have been responsible for the inland arc migration, from a western position on the Antarctic Peninsula to central Patagonia (Central Patagonian Batholith), as well as the widespread contractional pulse registered in southwestern Gondwana. The existence of this late Triassic shallow subduction episode is reinforced by a combination of P-wave seismic tomographic data and a recent plate kinematic reconstruction that reveal an anomalous inland location for the subducted slab, presently at the base of the lower mantle. In Lower Jurassic times, a slab-detachment episode developed simultaneously with the impingement and southwestward displacement of the Karoo mantle plume, would have favored the destabilization of the flat-subduction configuration. A re-establishment of the subduction in southwestern Gondwana, associated with the Lower Jurassic magmatic arc retraction (Subcordilleran Patagonian Batholith), occurred under extensional conditions most likely associated with slab rollback and a southwestward asthenospheric return flow. This upper mantle flow may have exerted a suction effect on the Karoo mantle plume towards Patagonia, expanding its lifespan with a continuous southwestward rejuvenation of the synextensional SLIP Chon Aike's magmatism. There is a broad consensus that the extensive late Mesozoic igneous rocks in NE China were generated in an extensional setting. However, the timing and mechanism of the lithospheric extension remain controversial. To address this, we carried out an integrated study involving LA–ICP–MS zircon U–Pb dating and geochemical analyses (major elements, trace elements, and Hf isotopes) for the Early Cretaceous adakitic lavas and A-type rhyolites of the Songliao Basin. The adakitic lavas are andesites and dacites. The U–Pb dating of zircons from the adakitic lavas and A-type rhyolites yielded ages between 115 and 102 Ma. Geochemically, the adakitic lavas are characterized by high Sr contents (515–1610 ppm) and low Y (0.98–17.58 ppm) and heavy rare earth element (HREE) contents, and they therefore have high Sr/Y (51–112) ratios. They also exhibit high Mg# values (36–57) and high contents of MgO (0.56–3.53 wt%), Cr (15.7–87.3 ppm), and Ni (6.7–44.7 ppm) that are comparable with those of high-Mg adakitic rocks. The A-type rhyolites show an affinity with aluminous A-type magmatic rocks, and they are metaluminous to peraluminous (A/CNK = 0.98–1.35), enriched in alkalis, Ga, Zr, Nb, and Y, depleted in Sr and P, and exhibit fractionated REE patterns with negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.05–0.77). All the primary zircons from the adakitic lavas and A-type rhyolites have positive ε Hf (t) values of +3.6 to +12.1 and juvenile two-stage model (T DM2) ages of 934–392 Ma. The adakitic lavas probably resulted from the partial melting of a delaminated region of the lower continental crust, with the magmas subsequently interacting with mantle materials upon ascent, while the A-type rhyolites were probably generated by the partial melting of a dehydrated charnockitic middle–lower crust. The data suggest that the adakitic lavas and the A-type rhyolites formed in an extensional environment related to the rollback of the subducting Paleo-Pacific Plate. The upwelling of asthenospheric mantle and local delamination of the lithosphere, which were induced by rollback of the subducting Paleo-Pacific Plate, extended from the Great Xing'an Range southeastward through the Songliao Basin to eastern Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces, giving rise to the southeastward migration of lithospheric extension and extension-related volcanism after ca. 140 Ma. The Raspas Metamorphic Complex is a high-pressure unit that includes eclogites, blueschists, and metapelites, with minor garnet amphibolites and greenschists. Although its geochemistry and ages are relatively well known, metamorphic constraints and the origin of its protolith remain unclear. In this study, we present new geochemical, metamorphic, and cooling age data to understand the protolith, metamorphic conditions, and the tectonic implications of this feature for the Northern Andes. Geochemical analyses reveals rocks with N- to E -MORB signatures and trace element ratios typical of a heterogeneous mantle source, like oceanic plateau lavas. Blueschists originated from a deep enriched source, similar to primitive mantle, while eclogites are similar to MORB. Iterative thermodynamic modeling of an eclogite indicates a low T/P gradient of ∼406 °C/GPa during the formation of the assemblage garnet (core), quartz, katophorite, and omphacite cores at ∼598 °C and 1.43 GPa, followed by the formation of atoll garnets and zoisite at 661 °C and 1.63 GPa, around 133 Ma. Peak metamorphic conditions were attained after isobaric heating at 709 °C and 1.61 GPa, resulting in the assemblage of garnet (rim), zoisite (rim), omphacite (rim), and katophorite. 40Ar/39Ar ages around 129 Ma indicate fast exhumation rates of 1.25 to 0.5 cm/yr. We propose that the Raspas Metamorphic Complex represents the interaction of the South American plate with an oceanic plateau during the Early Cretaceous. During the early stages of subduction, it created a flat slab geometry around 130 Ma. As the plateau transformed to eclogite, the decrease in buoyancy caused an increase in subduction dip during a regional roll-back at 129–123 Ma, which triggered the exhumation along the high-pressure belt. • Eclogite register the subduction and exhumation of an oceanic plateau. • The Northern Andes interacted with another oceanic plateau in the Early Cretaceous. • Fast exhumation rates of 1.25 to 0.5 cm/y after isobaric heating caused by a rollback. Recent advancements in sensor, mobile computing, and wireless communication technologies is creating new opportunities to effectively exploit real-time traffic data. Onboard vehicles collect, process, simulate traffic states in a distributed fashion and a local transportation management center coordinates the overall simulation with an optimistic execution technique. Such a distributed approach can provide more up-to-date and robust estimates with decreased communication bandwidth requirements and increased computing capacity. This paper proposes an online ad hoc distributed simulation. The physical operating platform for the model including operating system, communicational middleware, and traffic simulation model are described. Also, this paper investigates the analytical background of rollback process of the proposed ad hoc distributed simulation model. Flow rate diagram and cumulative number of vehicle diagram show that the overall system simulation speed and estimate accuracy may differ significantly as a function of the selected threshold.

Late Cretaceous Neyriz ophiolite, as a part of the Outer Zagros Ophiolitic Belt, represents a remnant of the southern Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere exposed along the Zagros suture zone in the south of Iran. Neyriz ophiolite is composed of dismembered lithological units including variably depleted mantle peridotites as well as intrusive and extrusive rocks preserving a geochemical evolution from mid-ocean ridge (MORB) to subduction-related (boninitic) signatures. Initially, the southern Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere formed in the mid-ocean ridge spreading centre between the Arabian plate to the south west and the Eurasian plate to the north east. The inception of intra-oceanic subduction in the northern margin of the Arabian plate caused a slightly metasomatised supra-subduction-zone (SSZ) mantle lithosphere, producing MORB-like melts with a high degree of partial melting (~25–30%), and complementary depleted residual clinopyroxene (Cpx)-rich harzburgite. The zircon U-Pb geochronology for plagiogranite and gabbro intrusions reveals formation ages of 100.1 ± 2.3 Ma to 93.4 ± 1.3 Ma, respectively (Cenomanian). At a later stage, the rapid slab rollback and associated fore-arc spreading led to asthenospheric diapirism and arc-wedge mantle corner flow, which produced boninitic-like melts with advanced degrees of shallow partial melting (~35%), and ultra-depleted residual Cpx-poor harzburgites. The pervasive interaction between boninitic-like melts and refractory Cpx-poor harzburgites produced dunites as replacive lenses. Thus, this study postulates that Neyriz ophiolite formed from the Neo-Tethyan intra-oceanic subduction system, and preserves evidence of the evolution from an early-MORB oceanic crust to an extending fore-arc basin during subduction rollback processes. This tectonic environment is common in the Eastern Mediterranean region, where SSZ ophiolites have resulted in extended protoarc-forearc settings above subducted slabs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Component alignment variation following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) does not fully explain the instance of long-term postoperative pain. Joint dynamics following TKA vary with component alignment and patient-specific musculoskeletal anatomy. Computational simulations allow joint dynamics outcomes to be studied across populations. This study aims to determine if simulated postoperative TKA joint dynamics correlate with patient-reported outcomes.Methods: Landmarking and 3D registration of implants was performed on 96 segmented postoperative computed tomography scans of TKAs. A cadaver rig-validated platform for generating patient-specific simulation of deep knee bend kinematics was run for each patient. Resultant dynamic outcomes were correlated with a 12-month postoperative Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS). A Classification and Regression Tree (CART) was used for determining nonlinear relationships.Results: Nonlinear relationships between the KOOS pain score and rollback and dynamic coronal alignment were found to be significant. Combining a dynamic coronal angular change from extension to full flexion between 0° and 4° varus (long leg axis) and measured rollback of no more than 6 mm without rollforward formed a "kinematic safe zone" of outcomes in which the postoperative KOOS score is 10.5 points higher (P = .013).Conclusion: The study showed statistically significant correlations between kinematic factors in a simulation of postoperative TKA and postoperative KOOS scores. The presence of a dynamic safe zone in the data suggests a potential optimal target for any given individual patient's joint dynamics and the opportunity to preoperatively determine a patient-specific alignment target to achieve those joint dynamics. In nanometer technologies, circuits are more and more sensitive to various kinds of perturbations. Alpha particles and atmospheric neutrons induce single-event upsets, affecting memory cells, latches, and flip-flops. They also induce single-event transients, initiated in the combinational logic and captured by the latches and flip-flops associated with the outputs of this logic. In the past, the major efforts were related on memories. However, as the whole situation is getting worse, solutions that protect the entire design are mandatory. Solutions for detecting the error in logic functions already exist, but there are only few solutions allowing the correction, leading to a lot of hardware overhead in nonprocessor design. In this paper, we present a novel technique that includes several hardware architectures and an algorithm for their implementations, which reduces the cost of rollback in any kinds of circuit. Introduction: Lateral retinacular release (LRR) is a common procedure during total knee arthroplasty (TKA), especially if patellar maltracking is observed intraoperatively. The impact of LRR on patellofemoral kinematics is well-examined, but the influence on femorotibial kinematics requires more elucidation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of LRR on femorotibial kinematics in vitro.Materials and Methods: A fixed bearing TKA was implanted in six human knee specimens. Femorotibial kinematics were measured dynamically through the use of a custom-constructed knee rig which flexes the knee from 20° to 120° under weight bearing conditions. Measurements were performed before and after LRR. LRR was performed completely including transection of synovium, retinaculum and tractus fibers. For the registration of tibiofemoral kinematics a 3-dimensional-ultrasound-based motion analysis system was used.Results: LRR revealed a significant reduction of femoral rollback at the lateral compartment (9.4 ± 5.0 vs 7.8 ± 9.4 mm; p < 0.01), whereas the present decrease of femoral rollback at the medial compartment was not significant (3.4 ± 4.7 vs 2.3 ± 5.9 mm; p = 0.34). Accordingly, LRR significantly reduced internal rotation of the tibia (0.8°; p < 0.01).Conclusion: The results suggest that LRR significantly decreases lateral femoral rollback as well as internal rotation of the tibia, probably by changing the tension of the iliotibial band. Abstract: Many continental orogens feature a pattern of SKS shear wave splitting with fast polarization directions parallel to the mountain fabrics and delay times of 1–2 s, implying that the crust and lithosphere deform consistently. In the Taiwan arc‐continent collision zone, similar pattern of SKS splitting exists, and thereby lithospheric scale deformation due to collision has been assumed. However, recent dynamic modeling demonstrated that the SKS splitting in Taiwan can be generated by the toroidal flow in the asthenosphere induced by the subduction of the Philippine Sea plate and the Eurasian plate. To further evaluate this hypothesis, we analyzed a new data set using a quantitative approach. The results show that models with slab geometries constrained by seismicity explain the observed fast splitting direction to within 25°, whereas the misfit grows to ~50–60° if the toroidal flow is disrupted by the presence of a sizable aseismic slab beneath central Taiwan as often suggested by tomographic imaging. However, small sized aseismic slab or detached slab fragment can potentially reconcile the splitting observations. We estimated the scale of vertical coherence to be 10–40 km in the lithosphere and 100–150 km in the asthenosphere, making the former unfavorable for accumulating large delay times. The low coherence is caused by the subduction of the Eurasian plate that creates complex deformation different from what characterizes the compressional tectonics above the plate. Central Anatolia exposes previously buried and metamorphosed, continent-derived rocks – the Kırşehir and Afyon zones – now covering an area of ∼300 × 400 km. So far, the exhumation history of these rocks has been poorly constrained. We show for the first time that the major, >120 km long, top-NE ‘Ivriz’ Detachment controlled the exhumation of the HP/LT metamorphic Afyon Zone in southern Central Anatolia. We date its activity at between the latest Cretaceous and early Eocene times. Combined with previously documented isolated extensional detachments found in the Kırşehir Block, our results suggest that a major province governed by extensional exhumation was active throughout Central Anatolia between ∼80 and ∼48 Ma. Although similar in dimension to the Aegean extensional province to the east, the Central Anatolian extensional province is considerably older and was controlled by a different extension direction. From this, we infer that the African slab(s) that subducted below Anatolia must have rolled back relative to the Aegean slab since at least the latest Cretaceous, suggesting that these regions were underlain by a segmented slab. Whether or not these early segments already corresponded to the modern Aegean, Antalya, and Cyprus slab segments remains open for debate, but slab segmentation must have occurred much earlier than previously thought. Area-wide composite monitor time series of daily PM 2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 μm) that correspond to just meeting U.S. National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) have been used in risk assessments conducted during periodic reviews of PM NAAQS by U.S. EPA. Such time series were developed by adjusting ambient PM 2.5 over an area according to a prescribed spatial pattern. A new technique for this purpose based on photochemical grid modeling for the continental U.S. is demonstrated here. The method uses a spatial prediction model to impute missing data and PM 2.5 relative response factors based on simulations with reductions in anthropogenic emissions of primary PM 2.5 and PM 2.5 precursors (i.e., NOx and SO 2 ). Case study results indicate that relatively urban sites are generally more responsive to primary PM 2.5 reductions, while outlying sites are more responsive to NOx and SO 2 reductions. The method enables the sensitivity of outcomes to be examined by quickly implementing PM 2.5 adjustments based on different combinations of primary PM 2.5 and NOx and SO 2 emission reductions for areas of the U.S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rollback is an effective technique to resume the system execution from a recorded intermediate state upon failures, without having to restart the entire system. However, in virtualized environments, rollback of a virtual machine cluster (VMC) produces high network traffic and long service disruption, particularly for a large cluster used for scientific computing, thereby imposing significant overhead both on network and applications. This paper proposes Piccolo, a fast and efficient rollback system, to restore a VMC from snapshot files over data center network. First, we exploit the similarity among VMC snapshots and leverage multicast to deliver the identical pages across VMs placed on disperse hosts, thereby bypassing unnecessary transmission of a large number of pages. Second, we analyze the impact on network traffic of varying VM placements in data center network, formulate the traffic aware placement as an optimization problem, and design a two-tier approximation algorithm that efficiently solves the problem. In addition to presenting Piccolo, we detail its implementation, and evaluate it by a set of experiments. The results show that Piccolo could achieve a significant reduction in terms of total sent data, network traffic and rollback latency compared to the existing generic techniques. The island of Seram, eastern Indonesia, experienced a complex Neogene history of multiple metamorphic and deformational events driven by Australia–SE Asia collision. Geological mapping, and structural and petrographic analysis has identified two main phases in the island's tectonic, metamorphic, and magmatic evolution: (1) an initial episode of extreme extension that exhumed hot lherzolites from the subcontinental lithospheric mantle and drove ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism and melting of adjacent continental crust; and (2) subsequent episodes of extensional detachment faulting and strike-slip faulting that further exhumed granulites and mantle rocks across Seram and Ambon. Here we present the results of sixteen 40 Ar/ 39 Ar furnace step heating experiments on white mica, biotite, and phlogopite for a suite of twelve rocks that were targeted to further unravel Seram's tectonic and metamorphic history. Despite a wide lithological and structural diversity among the samples, there is a remarkable degree of correlation between the 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages recorded by different rock types situated in different structural settings, recording thermal events at 16 Ma, 5.7 Ma, 4.5 Ma, and 3.4 Ma. These frequently measured ages are defined, in most instances, by two or more 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages that are identical within error. At 16 Ma, a major kyanite-grade metamorphic event affected the Tehoru Formation across western and central Seram, coincident with ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism and melting of granulite-facies rocks comprising the Kobipoto Complex, and the intrusion of lamprophyres. Later, at 5.7 Ma, Kobipoto Complex rocks were exhumed beneath extensional detachment faults on the Kaibobo Peninsula of western Seram, heating and shearing adjacent Tehoru Formation schists to form Taunusa Complex gneisses. Then, at 4.5 Ma, 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages record deformation within the Kawa Shear Zone (central Seram) and overprinting of detachment faults in western Seram. Finally, at 3.4 Ma, Kobipoto Complex migmatites were exhumed on Ambon, at the same time as deformation within the Kawa Shear Zone and further overprinting of detachments in western Seram. These ages support there having been multiple synchronised episodes of high-temperature extension and strike-slip faulting, interpreted to be the result of Western Seram having been ripped off from SE Sulawesi, extended, and dragged east by subduction rollback of the Banda Slab.
