Abstract: Rock glaciers are common in alpine landscapes, but their evolution over time and their significance as agents of debris transport are not well‐understood. Here, we assess the movement of an ice‐cemented rock glacier over a range of timescales using GPS surveying, satellite‐based radar, and cosmogenic 10Be surface‐exposure dating. GPS and InSAR measurements indicate that the rock glacier moved at an average rate of ∼10 cm yr−1 in recent years. Sampled boulders on the rock glacier have cosmogenic surface‐exposure ages from 1.2 to 10 ka, indicating that they have been exposed since the beginning of the Holocene. Exposure ages increase linearly with distance downslope, suggesting a slower long‐term mean surface velocity of 3 ± 0.3 cm yr−1. Our findings suggest that the behavior of this rock glacier may be dominated by episodes of dormancy punctuated by intervals of relatively rapid movement over both short and long timescales. Our findings also show that the volume of the rock glacier corresponds to ∼10 m of material stripped from the headwall during the Holocene. These are the first cosmogenic surface‐exposure ages to constrain movement of a North American rock glacier, and together with the GPS and satellite radar measurements, they reveal that rock glaciers are effective geomorphic agents with dynamic multi‐millennial histories.

Satellite imagery has become a major source for identifying and mapping terrestrial and planetary landforms. However, interpretating landforms and their significance, especially in changing environments, may still be questionable. Consequently, ground truth to check training models, especially in mountainous areas, can be problematic. This paper outlines a decimal format, [dLL], for latitude and longitude geolocation that can be used for model interpretation and validation and in data sets. As data have positions in space and time, [dLL] defined points, as for images, can be associated with metadata as nodes. Together with vertices, metadata nodes help build 'information surfaces' as part of the Digital Earth. This paper examines aspects of the Critical Zone and data integration via the FAIR data principles, data that are; findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable. Mapping and making inventories of rock glacier landforms are examined in the context of their geomorphic and environmental significance and the need for geolocated ground truth. Terrestrial examination of rock glaciers shows them to be predominantly glacier-derived landforms and not indicators of permafrost. Remote-sensing technologies used to track developing rock glacier surface features show them to be climatically melting glaciers beneath rock debris covers. Distinguishing between glaciers, debris-covered glaciers and rock glaciers over time is a challenge for new remote sensing satellites and technologies and shows the necessity for a common geolocation format to report many Earth surface features. Understanding the distribution of rock glaciers provides key information for investigating and recognizing the status and changes of the cryosphere environment. Deep learning algorithms and red–green–blue (RGB) bands from high-resolution satellite images have been extensively employed to map rock glaciers. However, the near-infrared (NIR) band offers rich spectral information and sharp edge features that could significantly contribute to semantic segmentation tasks, but it is rarely utilized in constructing rock glacier identification models due to the limitation of three input bands for classical semantic segmentation networks, like DeeplabV3+. In this study, a dual-encoder DeeplabV3+ network (DEDNet) was designed to overcome the flaws of the classical DeeplabV3+ network (CDNet) when identifying rock glaciers using multispectral remote sensing images by extracting spatial and spectral features from RGB and NIR bands, respectively. This network, trained with manually labeled rock glacier samples from the Qilian Mountains, established a model with accuracy, precision, recall, specificity, and mIoU (mean intersection over union) of 0.9131, 0.9130, 0.9270, 0.9195, and 0.8601, respectively. The well-trained model was applied to identify new rock glaciers in a test region, achieving a producer's accuracy of 93.68% and a user's accuracy of 94.18%. Furthermore, the model was employed in two study areas in northern Tien Shan (Kazakhstan) and Daxue Shan (Hengduan Shan, China) with high accuracy, which proved that the DEDNet offers an innovative solution to more accurately map rock glaciers on a larger scale due to its robustness across diverse geographic regions. Estimating permafrost distribution in high‐mountain areas is challenging. In these situations, rock glaciers, provide valuable insights into permafrost distribution and are often used as proxies for identifying permafrost occurrence. Integrating various climatological and topographical conditioning factors with rock glaciers enables inferring the distribution of permafrost in these environments. This study utilized three machine learning models such as random forest (RF), support vector (SVM), and artificial neural network (ANN), and one statistical model, namely, the frequency ratio (FR), to assess the permafrost probability over the northern Kargil region of Indian Himalayas. Among 198 rock glaciers identified through high‐resolution images from Google Earth, 70% are used as training dataset, rest 30% as testing dataset. The study considered eight factors: slope, aspect, elevation, curvature, mean annual land surface temperature (MA‐LST), mean annual normalized difference snow index (MA‐NDSI), mean annual normalized difference water index (MA‐NDWI), and lithology for mapping. Furthermore, the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) test assessed the variable importance for model performance. The results revealed that the RF model performs best for permafrost probability mapping, followed by the SVM, FR, and ANN models. Over the past decades, the cryosphere has changed significantly in High Mountain Asia (HMA), leading to multiple natural hazards such as rock–ice avalanches, glacier collapse, debris flows, landslides, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). Monitoring cryosphere change and evaluating its hydrological effects are essential for studying climate change, the hydrological cycle, water resource management, and natural disaster mitigation and prevention. However, knowledge gaps, data uncertainties, and other substantial challenges limit comprehensive research in climate–cryosphere–hydrology–hazard systems. To address this, we provide an up-to-date, comprehensive, multidisciplinary review of remote sensing techniques in cryosphere studies, demonstrating primary methodologies for delineating glaciers and measuring geodetic glacier mass balance change, glacier thickness, glacier motion or ice velocity, snow extent and water equivalent, frozen ground or frozen soil, lake ice, and glacier-related hazards. The principal results and data achievements are summarized, including URL links for available products and related data platforms. We then describe the main challenges for cryosphere monitoring using satellite-based datasets. Among these challenges, the most significant limitations in accurate data inversion from remotely sensed data are attributed to the high uncertainties and inconsistent estimations due to rough terrain, the various techniques employed, data variability across the same regions (e.g., glacier mass balance change, snow depth retrieval, and the active layer thickness of frozen ground), and poor-quality optical images due to cloudy weather. The paucity of ground observations and validations with few long-term, continuous datasets also limits the utilization of satellite-based cryosphere studies and large-scale hydrological models. Lastly, we address potential breakthroughs in future studies, i.e., (1) outlining debris-covered glacier margins explicitly involving glacier areas in rough mountain shadows, (2) developing highly accurate snow depth retrieval methods by establishing a microwave emission model of snowpack in mountainous regions, (3) advancing techniques for subsurface complex freeze–thaw process observations from space, (4) filling knowledge gaps on scattering mechanisms varying with surface features (e.g., lake ice thickness and varying snow features on lake ice), and (5) improving and cross-verifying the data retrieval accuracy by combining different remote sensing techniques and physical models using machine learning methods and assimilation of multiple high-temporal-resolution datasets from multiple platforms. This comprehensive, multidisciplinary review highlights cryospheric studies incorporating spaceborne observations and hydrological models from diversified techniques/methodologies (e.g., multi-spectral optical data with thermal bands, SAR, InSAR, passive microwave, and altimetry), providing a valuable reference for what scientists have achieved in cryosphere change research and its hydrological effects on the Third Pole. Vertical deformation associated with the displacement of rock glaciers in the upper Mapocho river basin, in the central Andes of Chile, was monitored using a series of PAZ radar satellite images and the DInSAR technique. Forty-one PAZ images of ascending and descending orbit were processed with the Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) technique. Regarding the obtained results, it was estimated that the vertical displacement velocity of rock glaciers between October 9, 2019 and April 22, 2021 reached up to -22 mm/year and the movement in the W-E direction ranged from -47 to 38 mm/year. This remote sensing technique is a useful tool to measure the surface displacement of rock glaciers, compared to conventional techniques such as GNSS point measurements, especially in the semi-arid Andes, which is one of the most important reservoirs of these geoforms worldwide. This note suggests that decimal latitude/longitude [dLL] locations should be used to identify features of interest, landforms, sample and investigations sites, in an 'information landscape' provided by the geomorphological literature. All the information associated with a labelled, or tagged, geolocation should be available for examination as part of information landscapes that can be explored and represented in books, papers and other publications. This note also outlines the 'open' and FAIR data that are findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable and how the principles can be used to better explain landscapes, especially in the mountain landscape domain. Tors and rock glaciers illustrate [dLL] geolocation to identify sites and inform fieldwork and literature searching. Any [dLL]‐specified location is an identifying label, as are names given to landforms and toponyms. Two letters (digraph) are used as landform labels: TO for tors and RG for rock glaciers. Citations, (author–date–title–source) attributions, are also labels. The note shows how these attributions can be linked to [dLL] geolocations specifying locations in time and space and in the literature. The addition of [dLL] will facilitate future literature searches and modelling to explore 'unknowns' in the landscape, and this paper suggests ways in which this can be achieved, including geoheritage and geotourism. Rock glaciers are common geomorphic features in alpine landscapes and comprise a potentially significant but poorly quantified water resource. This project focused on three complementary questions germane to rock glacier hydrology: 1) Does the composition of rock glacier meltwater vary from year to year? 2) How dependent is the composition of rock glacier meltwater on lithology? And 3) How does the presence of rock glaciers in a catchment change stream water chemistry? To address these questions, we deployed automated samplers to collect water from late June through mid-October 2022 in two rock-glacierized mountain ranges in Utah, United States characterized by different lithologies. In the Uinta Mountains of northern Utah, where bedrock is predominantly quartzite, water was collected at springs discharging from two rock glaciers previously shown to release water in late summer sourced from internal ice. In the La Sal Mountains of southeastern Utah, where trachyte bedrock is widespread, water was collected at a rock glacier spring, along the main stream in a watershed containing multiple rock glaciers, and from a stream in a watershed where rock glaciers are absent. Precipitation was also collected, and data loggers for water temperature and electric conductivity were deployed. Water samples were analyzed for stable isotopes with cavity ring-down spectroscopy and hydrochemistry with ICP-MS. Our data show that water discharging from rock glaciers in the Uinta Mountains exhibits a shift from a snowmelt source to an internal ice source over the course of the melt season that is consistent from year to year. We also found that the chemistry of rock glacier water in the two study areas is notably different in ways that can be linked back to their contrasting bedrock types. Finally, in the La Sal Mountains, the properties of water along the main stream in a rock-glacierized basin resemble the properties of water discharging from rock glaciers, and strongly contrast with the water in a catchment lacking rock glaciers. Collectively these results underscore the role of rock glaciers as an agent influencing the hydrochemistry of water in high-elevation stream systems.

In cold mountain environments, rock glaciers and talus represent common periglacial landforms. Accurate monitoring of their activity is crucial for understanding alpine kinematics. Presently, spaceborne SAR satellites monitor periglacial landform deformations mainly utilizing medium-resolution data. However, capturing surface structure deformations accurately and comprehending the movement mechanisms remain challenging. This study employs high-resolution GF-7 optical stereo images and Radarsat-2 SAR data, introducing a multibaseline persistent scatterer and distributed scatterer combined multitemporal InSAR (MT-InSAR) method to identify rock glaciers and talus landforms, as well as to analyze their deformations. Initially, rock glaciers and talus are outlined using GF-7 optical images, and digital surface models are extracted. The developed MT-InSAR method then detects the line of sight and slope-parallel deformations of these landforms. Radarsat-2 monitoring reveals that 47.5% of identified rock glaciers are classified as active, while talus deformations are less active compared to rock glaciers. By utilizing high-resolution optical and SAR satellite data, we first documented the intricate deformation features within standard rock glaciers, such as the front, lateral margins, and optionally ridge-and-furrow deformations, as well as their interaction with the surrounding terrain topography. This discovery offers evidence of gravity-driven forces impacting rock glacier movement. We have also conducted a deformation analysis of the talus, obtaining spatial deformation characteristics of typical talus. It was observed that the deformation of the talus is jointly influenced by the conditions of surface debris cover and the slope of the terrain. This study highlights the value of high-resolution optical and SAR satellites in studying periglacial geomorphology dynamics.

ABSTRACTOur understanding of permafrost distribution is still limited, particularly in mountainous areas where highly heterogeneous environments and a lack of reliable field data tend to prevail. The extensive distribution of rock glaciers in the Qilian Mountains, located in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, offers the opportunity to develop a novel approach for permafrost mapping in mountainous regions. In this study, a total of 1,530 rock glacier records were combined with in situ data to drive machine learning models for estimating permafrost presence. Three machine learning algorithms were adopted, and their accuracies were assessed in both mountains and plains by comparing the mapped permafrost to reserved field data as well as other published permafrost datasets. Among the algorithms tested, the CatBoost model presented the highest accuracy, with an overall accuracy of 83.3%. The model was thus chosen to produce a 250-m resolution permafrost zonation index (PZI) map, which identified a total area of 73.1 × 103 km2 permafrost in the Qilian Mountains, accounting for 39.1% of the area. The map also presented higher accuracy than other published permafrost maps. This study demonstrated that rock glacier records coupled with gradient-boosting machine-learning algorithms can help improve permafrost mapping, especially in the most challenging mountainous permafrost areas.

Rock glaciers are one of the most representative elements of mountain permafrost. Their study can contribute to modelling climate change and its effect on natural and anthropogenic environments. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the evolution and quantify the changes in these periglacial landforms at a global level. This study aims to present the monitoring work carried out on the Pyrenean rock glacier of La Paúl (42°39′40″N, 0°26′34″E) from 2013 to 2020, employing in situ geomatics techniques to determine the landform surface kinematics accurately. For this purpose, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), terrestrial laser scanners (TLS), and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) photogrammetry techniques were used simultaneously to evaluate their compatibility in quantifying displacements. Based on 2D and 3D analyses, the results demonstrate the high surface activity of the rock glacier, with mean variations reaching 36 cm/year (GNSS) and a distribution of deformations that, although intensified on its western side, are present on the entire surface of La Paúl. This study uses state-of-the-art geomatics techniques to present dependable and updated quantitative data on a periglacial landform's recent development in under-researched areas, such as the Pyrenean temperate high mountain. Global climate changes affect the ecological situation of mountain areas exposed to cryogenic processes. Currently, there are noticeable changes in the cryosphere of the mountains, and the risk of dangerous phenomena associated with the degradation of glaciers and permafrost is growing. One of the forms of mountainous relief is rock glaciers, which are formed in the zone of permafrost development and contain water in the solid phase. In a warming climate, rock glaciers can become sources of mudflow hazard, and the volume of ice contained in rock glaciers is an important resource for water reserves and plays a certain role in regional hydrological processes. According to calculations, there are 504 geomorphological formations in the Ile Alatau mountains. The article presents the results of a preliminary assessment of the structure of the Morenny rock glacier (Ulken Almaty River valley, Northern Tien Shan) using geophysical methods. Based on observational data from Kazhydromet at the Big Almaty Lake meteorological station, the climatic characteristics of the study area are given. It is shown that the average air temperature during the warm period increases at a rate of 0.1°C/10 years, the amount of precipitation for November-March increased slightly (observation period 1932-2022). Using electrical tomography methods (Skala-64 station) and electrical prospecting (Mala ground penetrating radar) it was possible to assess the structure of the frontal part and western lobe of the rock glacier. The results obtained indicate the presence of ice cores, established by high resistivity values. Zones of frozen rockice deposits and melt water-saturated areas were identified. Geoelectric and geological sections were compiled. The results of the studies confirm the earlier assumptions about the presence of large volumes of water accumulated in the body of the rock glacier. Rock glaciers are common landforms in mountainous areas of the western US. The motion of active rock glaciers is a key indicator of ice content, offering connections to climate and hydrologic systems. Here, we quantified the movement of six rock glaciers in the La Sal and Uinta Mountains of Utah through repeat differential GPS surveying. Networks of 10–41 points on each rock glacier were surveyed in September 2021; July 2022; September 2022; and July 2023. We found that all features are moving with average annual rates of motion from 1.5 ± 0.8 to 18.5 ± 7.5 cm/yr. Rock glaciers move up to 3× faster in the summer than in the winter, and rates of motion were greater in 2023 after a winter with above-average snowfall, emphasizing the role of liquid water availability. Velocities of individual points in the winter of 2021–22 are positively correlated with velocities during the winter of 2022–23, suggesting that spatial variability of motion is not stochastic, but rather reflects internal properties of each rock glacier. Bottom temperature of snow measurements during winter, and the temperature of springs discharging water in summer, suggest that these rock glaciers contain modern permafrost. Radiocarbon data document advance of one rock glacier during the Little Ice Age. Our GPS dataset reveals complicated patterns of rock glacier movement, and the network of survey points we established will be a valuable baseline for detecting future cryosphere change in these mountains.

Rock glaciers are typical periglacial landforms with tongue or lobate morphological shapes and characterized by the distinct front, lateral margins, and often by ridge-and-furrow surface topography textures as well as kinematic characteristics, widely distributed in alpine environments. Multitemporal Synthetic aperture radar interferometry (MT-InSAR), is a remote sensing technique with demonstrated effectiveness for detecting landform kinematics. However, its application to rock glaciers is challenged by temporal decorrelation and atmospheric phase noises due to complex topography and snow cover. We designed a quadtree segmentation and parallel computing-based MT-InSAR method to improve the quality and efficiency of deformation measurement of rock glaciers. We applied the method to a rock glacier inventory of the Nyainqêntanglha Range, China, derived from high-resolution Gaofen-2 images, to quantify the activity rate of each rock glacier. Results showed that 32.1% (6,389) of the identified rock glaciers exhibited slope-parallel deformation rates exceeding 100 mm/y. The activities of the rock glaciers exhibited strong correlations with their distance to glaciers, precipitation, freeze–thaw magnitude, and permafrost occurrence probability. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed segmentation-parallel MT-InSAR method for monitoring rock glacier deformation over a large region.

The availability of remote sensing imagery at high spatiotemporal resolutions presents the opportunity to monitor the surface motion of rock glaciers, a key constraint for characterizing the dynamics of their evolution. In this paper, we investigate four North American rock glaciers by automatically measuring their horizontal surface displacement using photogrammetric data acquired with crewed and uncrewed aircraft along with orbital spacecraft over monitoring periods of up to eight years. We estimate vertical surface changes on these rock glaciers with photogrammetrically generated digital elevation models (DEM) and digitized topographic maps. Uncertainty analysis shows that the imagery with the highest resolution and most precise positioning have the best performance when used with the automated change detection algorithm. This investigation produces gridded velocity fields over the entire surface area of each study site, from which we estimate the age of rock glacier formation using along-flow velocity integration. Though the age estimates vary, the ice within the modern extent of these landforms began flowing between 3000 and 7000 years before present, postdating the last glacial maximum. Surface elevation change maps indicate present-day thinning at the lower latitude/higher elevation sites in Wyoming, while the higher latitude/lower elevation sites in Alaska exhibit relatively stable surface elevations. Glacial ice contains information on paleoclimate, but typically is less than 1 Myrs old because glaciers continuously flow and melt. A recently discovered buried ice mass in Antarctica is dated to 3-5 Myrs and highlights the potential for long preservation of ancient ice under a layer of debris. Only two such ice masses are so far known in Antarctica. Given the significant scientific potential and lack of systematic mapping, we set out to locate all buried ice masses in Transantarctic Mountains (TAM). We visually analyzed >8,000 high-resolution satellite images covering much of the TAM. We searched for the polygonal patterned ground that signifies ice in the ground and once detected the corresponding digital elevation model was inspected for presence of a convex landform. When both features coincide, they indicate the presence of a buried ice body. We identified 22 new sites that are likely to conceal massive buried ice masses.

Landsystem relationships between glaciers and rock debris supply in a mountain landscape domain, (), are described. Decimal latitude-longitude [dLL] geolocations are used to identify features and transects in an information landscape. Geo-located features are coded, enabling transects between a 1976 expedition and 2019 Google Earth imagery to be compared. Rock debris is progressively added to 1-3 km long glaciers which become debris-covered. Cirque glaciers eventually assume rock glacier (RG) forms when supraglacial debris loads are high. Some rock glacier snouts reach main valley floors and still advance over meadows. This behaviour is attributed to high geomorphic activity producing rock detritus and transport to glaciers in the early Little Ice Age. The advances of rock glacier snouts are a consequence of thinning; low-angle glaciers still moving beneath debris-covered glaciers (GLd) covers. Persistent melt pools continue to develop within the surface debris cover of glaciers and rock glaciers and expose glacier ice. All the rock glaciers are below the regional snowline and permafrost can be discounted for rock glacier formation. Scree slope (SS) development may ultimately be sufficient to cover bare glacier ice moving from a glacier (GL) to debris-covered glacier (GLd) to rock glacier (RG). Reverse slopes in the debris at the foot of screes mark the mass continuum of glacier flow below the debris cover, not the 'rooting zone' of a permafrost-derived RG. Scree slopes themselves show no evidence of rock glacier-like flow. A simple glacier ice-debris transport continuum model is sufficient and necessary for rock glacier formation and flow. Rock glaciers are an integral part of the periglacial environment. At the regional scale in the Greater Caucasus, there have been no comprehensive systematic efforts to assess the distribution of rock glaciers, although some individual parts of ranges have been mapped before. In this study we produce the first inventory of rock glaciers from the entire Greater Caucasus region—Russia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. A remote sensing survey was conducted using Geo-Information System (GIS) and Google Earth Pro software based on high-resolution satellite imagery—SPOT, Worldview, QuickBird, and IKONOS, based on data obtained during the period 2004–2021. Sentinel-2 imagery from the year 2020 was also used as a supplementary source. The ASTER GDEM (2011) was used to determine location, elevation, and slope for all rock glaciers. Using a manual approach to digitize rock glaciers, we discovered that the mountain range contains 1461 rock glaciers with a total area of 297.8 ± 23.0 km2. Visual inspection of the morphology suggests that 1018 rock glaciers with a total area of 199.6 ± 15.9 km2 (67% of the total rock glacier area) are active, while the remaining rock glaciers appear to be relict. The average maximum altitude of all rock glaciers is found at 3152 ± 96 m above sea level (a.s.l.) while the mean and minimum altitude are 3009 ± 91 m and 2882 ± 87 m a.s.l., respectively. We find that the average minimum altitude of active rock glaciers is higher (2955 ± 98 m a.s.l.) than in relict rock glaciers (2716 ± 83 m a.s.l.). No clear difference is discernible between the surface slope of active (41.4 ± 3°) and relict (38.8 ± 4°) rock glaciers in the entire mountain region. This inventory provides a database for understanding the extent of permafrost in the Greater Caucasus and is an important basis for further research of geomorphology and palaeoglaciology in this region. ABSTRACTRelating physiological stress to habitat quality could refine conservation efforts. Habitat quality, which is often inferred from patch occupancy or demographic rates, might be measured in a more timely and nuanced way using metrics of physiological stress. To understand whether stress-associated hormones vary with metrics of habitat quality, we measured fecal glucocorticoid metabolite (FGM) levels in the American pika (Ochotona princeps), a small mammal with well-defined habitat (talus), which can vary in quality depending on the presence of subsurface ice features. In spring and fall 2018, we collected feces noninvasively from pika territories in taluses “with” or “without” subsurface ice to capture seasonal variation in FGM between habitat types. We used linear mixed effects models to explore the interactions among season, habitat metrics (including subsurface ice status), and subsurface temperature as predictors of FGM. We found support for interacting effects on FGM levels, which covaried with season, elevation, putative ice presence, graminoid to forb ratio, graminoid cover, and measures of acute subsurface heat exposure. However, only one subsurface temperature metric differed according to putative presence of subsurface ice. Our results contribute to the growing evidence that FGMs might be developed as a tool to assess habitat quality.

Differences in the sex-ratio and morphometric parameters in cold-adapted ground beetles were analysed to investigate environmental heterogeneity at small scale in a periglacial contest of the European Alps. Four hundred and thirty specimens of two cold-adapted ground beetles - Nebria germarii (Heer, 1837) and Nebria castanea (Bonelli 1810) - were analysed in order to test the presence of variation in sex-ratio, sexual dimorphism and morphometric parameters in relation to the occurrence of ice, and other environmental variables. Specifically, the populations found on an ice-related landform (active rock glacier) were compared with those on ice-free landforms (a fossil rock glacier and a scree slope). Both species experience sex-dependent morphometric plasticity. In addition, sex-ratio is female-biased, supporting female pioneering tendency in all the studied landforms. Two morphometric parameters resulted indirectly affected by the presence/absence of ice in the terrain: the head width decreases, while elytra width increases passing from ice-free to ice-related landform. Both these morphometric differences may be related to the increase of intra/interspecific competition and to the lower trophic availability. This study highlights that even if these high altitude cold-adapted species are able to survive on ice-free landforms, they probably find more favourable conditions on ice-related landforms. Since the two species show different sensitivity to the ice-presence, it is not always possible to detect this preference through abundances variability (e.g for N. castanea), but it necessary to use more detailed morphometric analysis. Rock glaciers are typical periglacial landforms with tongue or lobate morphological shapes and characterized by the distinct front, lateral margins, and often by ridge-and-furrow surface topography textures as well as kinematic characteristics, widely distributed in alpine environments. Multitemporal Synthetic aperture radar interferometry (MT-InSAR), is a remote sensing technique with demonstrated effectiveness for detecting landform kinematics. However, its application to rock glaciers is challenged by temporal decorrelation and atmospheric phase noises due to complex topography and snow cover. We designed a quadtree segmentation and parallel computing-based MT-InSAR method to improve the quality and efficiency of deformation measurement of rock glaciers. We applied the method to a rock glacier inventory of the Nyainqêntanglha Range, China, derived from high-resolution Gaofen-2 images, to quantify the activity rate of each rock glacier. Results showed that 32.1% (6,389) of the identified rock glaciers exhibited slope-parallel deformation rates exceeding 100 mm/y. The activities of the rock glaciers exhibited strong correlations with their distance to glaciers, precipitation, freeze–thaw magnitude, and permafrost occurrence probability. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed segmentation-parallel MT-InSAR method for monitoring rock glacier deformation over a large region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While rock glaciers (RGs) are widespread in the Zhetysu Alatau mountain range of Tien Shan (Kazakhstan), they have not yet been systematically investigated. In this study, we present the first rock glacier inventory of this region containing 256 rock glaciers with quantitative information about their locations, geomorphic parameters, and downslope velocities, as established using a method that combines SAR interferometry and optical images from Google Earth. Our inventory shows that most of the RGs are talus-derived (61%). The maximum downslope velocity of the active rock glaciers (ARGs) was 252 mm yr−1. The average lower height of rock glaciers in this part of the Zhetysu Alatau was 3036 m above sea level (ASL). The largest area of rock glaciers was located between 2800 and 3400 m ASL and covered almost 86% of the total area. Most rock glaciers had a northern (northern, northeastern, and northwestern) orientation, which indicated the important role of solar insolation in their formation and preservation. Rock glaciers are the most abundant (peri) glacial landform in the semiarid Andes (SA, 29–34°S), covering about three times the area of mountain glaciers. Recent studies suggest they may play an important hydrological role, including generating, storing and routing water. However, processes governing these roles are still poorly known especially for glacier complex units, i.e., where there is a juxtaposition or continuity of different (peri) glacial landforms, which are common in semiarid Andean and Himalayan areas. This study aims to understand how the internal structure of an ice-debris landform assemblage controls hydrological routing. To address this aim, we used a combination of three geophysical techniques to qualitatively determine the internal structure and favourable water routing and storage zones at the Tapado glacier complex (30°S), Chile. The Tapado glacier complex consists of an assemblage of a debris-free glacier, a debris-covered glacier and two rock glaciers. For the purpose of this study, we focused on the debris-covered and active rock glacier connection. At this site, the debris-covered glacier has a relatively thin debris-cover that increases thickness downglacier. This debris cover connects to the active rock glacier and forms the active layer. The rock glacier contains a heterogenous internal structure consisting of debris with water or segregated ice filling the voids, which likely derives from the massive ice of the debris-covered glacier. The superficial debris layer of the ice-debris landforms may act as a transmissive medium by routing water downstream above the massive ice of the debris-covered glacier, but also into deeper areas, as intra-permafrost flow, in the rock glacier. The rock glacier likely has a higher capacity to transmit vertical and horizontal flows, thereby enhancing infiltration processes. This study reinforces the value of geophysical methods to determine the internal structure of ice-debris landforms, particularly in the transition between landforms, and highlights how a warming climate and consequent paraglacial processes will impact the hydrological system not only in terms of water storage, but also water transfer.

Rock glaciers are common geomorphic features in alpine landscapes and comprise a potentially significant but poorly quantified water resource. This project focused on three complementary questions germane to rock glacier hydrology: 1) Does the composition of rock glacier meltwater vary from year to year? 2) How dependent is the composition of rock glacier meltwater on lithology? And 3) How does the presence of rock glaciers in a catchment change stream water chemistry? To address these questions, we deployed automated samplers to collect water from late June through mid-October 2022 in two rock-glacierized mountain ranges in Utah, United States characterized by different lithologies. In the Uinta Mountains of northern Utah, where bedrock is predominantly quartzite, water was collected at springs discharging from two rock glaciers previously shown to release water in late summer sourced from internal ice. In the La Sal Mountains of southeastern Utah, where trachyte bedrock is widespread, water was collected at a rock glacier spring, along the main stream in a watershed containing multiple rock glaciers, and from a stream in a watershed where rock glaciers are absent. Precipitation was also collected, and data loggers for water temperature and electric conductivity were deployed. Water samples were analyzed for stable isotopes with cavity ring-down spectroscopy and hydrochemistry with ICP-MS. Our data show that water discharging from rock glaciers in the Uinta Mountains exhibits a shift from a snowmelt source to an internal ice source over the course of the melt season that is consistent from year to year. We also found that the chemistry of rock glacier water in the two study areas is notably different in ways that can be linked back to their contrasting bedrock types. Finally, in the La Sal Mountains, the properties of water along the main stream in a rock-glacierized basin resemble the properties of water discharging from rock glaciers, and strongly contrast with the water in a catchment lacking rock glaciers. Collectively these results underscore the role of rock glaciers as an agent influencing the hydrochemistry of water in high-elevation stream systems.

Rock glaciers are one of the most representative elements of mountain permafrost. Their study can contribute to modelling climate change and its effect on natural and anthropogenic environments. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the evolution and quantify the changes in these periglacial landforms at a global level. This study aims to present the monitoring work carried out on the Pyrenean rock glacier of La Paúl (42°39′40″N, 0°26′34″E) from 2013 to 2020, employing in situ geomatics techniques to determine the landform surface kinematics accurately. For this purpose, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), terrestrial laser scanners (TLS), and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) photogrammetry techniques were used simultaneously to evaluate their compatibility in quantifying displacements. Based on 2D and 3D analyses, the results demonstrate the high surface activity of the rock glacier, with mean variations reaching 36 cm/year (GNSS) and a distribution of deformations that, although intensified on its western side, are present on the entire surface of La Paúl. This study uses state-of-the-art geomatics techniques to present dependable and updated quantitative data on a periglacial landform’s recent development in under-researched areas, such as the Pyrenean temperate high mountain.

The Indian Himalayan region is experiencing frequent hazards and disasters related to permafrost. However, research on permafrost in this region has received very little or no attention. Therefore, it is important to have knowledge about the spatial distribution and state of permafrost in the Indian Himalayas. Modern remote sensing techniques, with the help of a geographic information system (GIS), can assess permafrost at high altitudes, largely over inaccessible mountainous terrains in the Himalayas. To assess the spatial distribution of permafrost in the Alaknanda Valley of the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state, 198 rock glaciers were mapped (183 active and 15 relict) using high-resolution satellite data available in the Google Earth database. A logistic regression model (LRM) was used to identify a relationship between the presence of permafrost at the rock glacier sites and the predictor variables, i.e., the mean annual air temperature (MAAT), the potential incoming solar radiation (PISR) during the snow-free months, and the aspect near the margins of rock glaciers. Two other LRMs were also developed using moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived land surface temperature (LST) and snow cover products. The MAAT-based model produced the best results, with a classification accuracy of 92.4%, followed by the snow-cover-based model (91.9%), with the LST-based model being the least accurate (82.4%). All three models were developed to compare their accuracy in predicting permafrost distribution. The results from the MAAT-based model were validated with the global permafrost zonation index (PZI) map, which showed no significant differences. However, the predicted model exhibited an underestimation of the area underlain by permafrost in the region compared to the PZI. Identifying the spatial distribution of permafrost will help us to better understand the impact of climate change on permafrost and its related hazards and provide necessary information to decision makers to mitigate permafrost-related disasters in the high mountain regions. The availability of remote sensing imagery at high spatiotemporal resolutions presents the opportunity to monitor the surface motion of rock glaciers, a key constraint for characterizing the dynamics of their evolution. In this paper, we investigate four North American rock glaciers by automatically measuring their horizontal surface displacement using photogrammetric data acquired with crewed and uncrewed aircraft along with orbital spacecraft over monitoring periods of up to eight years. We estimate vertical surface changes on these rock glaciers with photogrammetrically generated digital elevation models (DEM) and digitized topographic maps. Uncertainty analysis shows that the imagery with the highest resolution and most precise positioning have the best performance when used with the automated change detection algorithm. This investigation produces gridded velocity fields over the entire surface area of each study site, from which we estimate the age of rock glacier formation using along-flow velocity integration. Though the age estimates vary, the ice within the modern extent of these landforms began flowing between 3000 and 7000 years before present, postdating the last glacial maximum. Surface elevation change maps indicate present-day thinning at the lower latitude/higher elevation sites in Wyoming, while the higher latitude/lower elevation sites in Alaska exhibit relatively stable surface elevations.

The objective of this work is to conduct a detailed mapping of the Héðinsdalsjökull foreland, northern Iceland (65°39′N, 18°55′W). This cirque currently shows a variety of glacial and periglacial landforms derived from a complex deglaciation. Mapping was performed combining traditional hand-drawn and digital mapping. A hand-drawn sketch was georeferenced in ArcMap 10.7.1, supported on an aerial photograph (year 2000). Its vectorization, symbolization and final design were done in the computer-aided design (CAD) software MicroStation Connect. Complementary high-resolution Digital Surface Models were obtained from historical aerial photographs and ground-view field photographs through the application of Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry. To improve the topographic expression of the geomorphological map, a photorealistic 3D view has been generated. The final map highlights the complexity of the foreland and the coexistence existence of a range of different units and landforms. The map will ease future studies on the transformation of receding glaciers.

Accurately assessing landform evolution and quantifying rapid environmental changes are gaining importance in the context of monitoring techniques in alpine environments. In the European Alps, glaciers and rock glaciers are among the most characteristic cryospheric components bearing long and systematic monitoring periods. The acceleration in rock glacier velocities and the onset of destabilization processes, mainly since 1990, have raised several concerns due to the potential effects on the high alpine natural and anthropic environments. This study presents a combination of uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) surveys for monitoring the current changes on the quickly accelerating, destabilised Tsarmine rock glacier in the Arolla Valley, Western Swiss Alps, delivering a considerable volume of debris to a steep torrential gully. High-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) and orthomosaics are derived from UAV image series combined with structure from motion (SfM) photogrammetry techniques. Multitemporal orthomosaics are employed for measuring spatially continuous rock glacier kinematics using image matching algorithms. Superficial displacements are evaluated with simultaneous in-situ differential global navigation satellite system (GNSS) measurements. Elevation and volume changes are computed from TLS and UAV-derived DEMs at similar periods. Between June 2017 and September 2019, both datasets showed a similar elevation change pattern and surface thinning rates of 0.15 ± 0.04 and 0.16 ± 0.03 m yr−1, respectively. Downward of a rupture zone developing about 150 m above the front, the rock glacier doubled its overall velocity during the study period, from around 5 m yr−1 between October 2016 and June 2017 to more than 10 m yr−1 between June and September 2019. The kinematic information reveals striking differences in the velocity between the lower and upper rock glacier sections. The monitoring approach based on close-sensing techniques provides accurate surface velocity and volume change information, allowing an enhanced description of the current rock glacier dynamics and its surface expression.

Water draining from rock glaciers in the Uinta Mountains of Utah (USA) was analyzed and compared with samples of ground water and water from the master stream in a representative 5000-ha drainage. Rock glacier water resembles snowmelt in the early summer, but transitions to higher values of d-excess and greatly elevated Ca and Mg content as the melt season progresses. This pattern is consistent with models describing a transition from snowmelt, to melting of seasonal ice, to melting of perennial ice in the rock glacier interior in late summer and fall. Water derived from this internal ice appears to have been the source of ~25% of the streamflow in this study area during September of2021. This result emphasizes the significant role that rock glaciers can play in the hydrology of high-elevation watersheds, particularly in summers following a winter with below average snowpack. The Macun lakes form a high-alpine (> 2,600 m asl) cirque landscape (3.6 km²) in the Swiss National Park, comprising 26 small lakes together with a number of temporary ponds. Streams interconnect the four largest lakes, forming the drainage network that flows into the Inn River at the town of Lavin. The drainage network of Macun consists of a north and a south basin that overlie an ortho-gneiss, meta-granitoid bedrock. The south basin is influenced by various rock glaciers. The physico-chemistry of surface waters at 10 sites has been monitored annually in mid-summer since 2001. Further, an YSI EXO2 Multiparameter Sonde (Exosonde) with various water quality sensors has been employed since 2016 at the last lake in the network to examine seasonal and diel patterns in physico-chemistry. Results showed clear physico-chemical differences between the two basins, which mostly reflect rock-glacier inputs in the south basin. Nitrogen values were two-fold higher and particulate phosphorus values two-fold lower in the south basin than in the north basin. Over time, the physico-chemistry in the two basins became more homogeneous, with a reduction in rock-glacial inputs in the south basin and an overall decrease in nitrogen in the catchment. Data from 30 springs and tributaries sampled in 2002 and 2017 reflected the basin differences and temporal changes observed at the primary study sites. Continuous temperature records showed north basin streams to be ca. 3°C warmer than south-basin streams, but with high inter-annual variation that reflected annual differences in weather and no evidence of a general change over time (increase or decrease). Exosonde data revealed strong seasonality in measured parameters as well as seasonality in diel patterns (e. g., dissolved oxygen, temperature, chlorophyll-a); diel fluctuations were most pronounced in summer and least in winter. The results highlight the importance of long-term monitoring for understanding ecosystem state changes in alpine freshwaters, especially during periods of rapid environmental change. This paper presents a detailed rock glacier and protalus rampart inventory from Las Salinas river basin, an arid subtropical mountain hydrological system (between 31°02’ and 31°22’ S latitude) located in the northern sector of the Central Andes of Argentina, where permafrost and cryogenic processes prevail. The inventory is based on a geomorphological characterization by means of optical remote sensing and field description data. The study region covers 630 km2, with 3.25% of the area containing 405±8.2 rock glaciers and protalus ramparts in total, of which 231±2.5 are considered protalus rampart and 49±2 are considered active, 61±1 inactive and 64±3 fossil rock glaciers. Frequency ratio and logistic regression were used as statistical methods to determine the relationship between the distribution of these periglacial landforms and different geological, morphometric and climatic variables as elevation, potential incoming solar radiation, slope, aspect and lithology. Results show that elevation, lithology, and aspect are the most influencing factors for the occurrence of active rock glaciers. According to rock glaciers and protalus ramparts distribution, the permafrost occurrence probability is above 3690 m a.s.l. (current and high periglacial environment). However, some inactive rock glaciers and protalus rampart were found below this elevation, thus between 3300 and 3690 m a.s.l. the landscapes are dominated by an unstable periglacial environment.

During the Little Ice Age (LIA), Corral del Veleta (Sierra Nevada) housed a small glacier of which relict glacial ice and permafrost still remain under packets of ice blocks. Currently, it is considered the southernmost rock glacier in Europe. The analysis and results of monitoring carried out on this rock glacier reveal it to be in an accelerated process of immobilization and that the relict glacial ice blocks and permafrost on which it lies are in a continual process of degradation. The rock glacier was monitored from 2001 to 2019 using diverse geomatic techniques, to which geophysical and thermal techniques were added. The results obtained during the observation period shed light on the dynamic of the rock glacier (morpho-topographic movements and deformations) as well as the physical state of the underlying frozen bodies (volumetric reduction and spatial distribution). The changes observed are related to variations in the dominant high-mountain climate of Sierra Nevada, particularly since the end of the 20th century, the general tendencies of which are increasing temperatures, decreasing annual snowfall, and a shorter duration of snow on the ground. Meltwater from the cryosphere contributes a significant fraction of the freshwater resources in the countries receiving water from the Third Pole. Within the ESA-MOST Dragon 4 project, we addressed in particular changes of glaciers and proglacial lakes and their interaction. In addition, we investigated rock glaciers in permafrost environments. Here, we focus on the detailed investigations which have been performed in the Poiqu River Basin, central Himalaya. We used in particular multi-temporal stereo satellite imagery, including high-resolution 1960/70s Corona and Hexagon spy images and contemporary Pleiades data. Sentinel-2 data was applied to assess the glacier flow. The results reveal that glacier mass loss continuously increased with a mass budget of −0.42 ± 0.11 m w.e.a−1 for the period 2004–2018. The mass loss has been primarily driven by an increase in summer temperature and is further accelerated by proglacial lakes, which have become abundant. The glacial lake area more than doubled between 1964 and 2017. The termini of glaciers that flow into lakes moved on average twice as fast as glaciers terminating on land, indicating that dynamical thinning plays an important role. Rock glaciers are abundant, covering approximately 21 km2, which was more than 10% of the glacier area (approximately 190 km2) in 2015. The presence of buried glacial ice and putative extinct rock glaciers in Mars' equatorial regions has implications for understanding its climate history and sensitivity to changes in insolation and has significant implications for past global redistribution of the water ice cryosphere. We quantify the morphology of rock glacier- "like" features on the northern slopes of Aeolis Mons (known also as Mount Sharp) within Gale crater and use this information to evaluate a possible rock glacier origin for these forms. Detailed morphometric evaluation of cross and long profiles of these lobate features, which exhibit higher slopes at their heads, lower slopes at their distal edge, and a convex upward cross-sectional profile and oversteepened sides, resembles active terrestrial rock glaciers. However, the absence of a chevron wrinkle pattern and sublimation features could indicate extensive aeolian reworking and the lack of deflation could indicate a higher rock to ice mixture. The lack of cratering surfaces relative to the cratered surfaces that they overly could indicate a younger age and are possibly indistinguishable in age from the capping units of Mount Sharp, which may have once been more laterally extensive and may have been the source of these mass wasting forms. Rock glaciers, unique creeping periglacial landforms, have garnered research interest for their valuable insights into hydrological resources and representing potential geological hazards in the context of climate warming. However, owing to the scarcity of high-spatiotemporal-resolution kinematic observations, the mechanisms driving rock glacier movements remain poorly understood. This study introduces a strategy for estimating three-dimensional (3D) velocities of rock glaciers by combining ascending and descending interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) observations with a surface parallel flow model. We mapped the 3D surface creeping velocities of 1084 rock glaciers in Daxueshan, southwest Tibetan Plateau, from January 2019 to December 2020. Subsequently, we employed the generalized boosted model (GBM), a machine learning approach, to link rock glacier creep to environmental factors. The rock glaciers in Daxueshan exhibited spatially heterogeneous creep, with maximum and average annual velocities of 307.86 mm∙a−1 and 40.37 mm∙a−1, respectively. About 92% of rock glaciers crept with a two-peak seasonal rhythm characterized by "spring acceleration, summer deceleration, autumn acceleration, and winter deceleration". GBM modeling suggested that precipitation and snowmelt were the predominant environmental factors controlling the kinematics of rock glaciers, with relative importance of 32.6% and 31.7%, respectively. Land surface temperature (LST) was the third significant driver at 17.1% of the relative importance. Slope angle and topographic wetness index (TWI) had the least impact. The modeling also quantitatively revealed the distinct nonlinear responses of rock glacier creep to environmental changes. Rock glaciers initiate acceleration at precipitation and snowmelt levels of about 2 mm, LST close to −2 °C, slope angle and TWI higher than 12° and 4.6, and stabilize when these factors reach certain thresholds. Furthermore, the seasonal variations in rock glacier creeping velocity can be primarily attributed to hydrological changes. Temperate glaciers are very sensitive to changes in the global climate system and provide an excellent opportunity to obtain information on the timing and magnitude of palaeoclimatic changes. Numerous studies in the Mediterranean mountains indicate alternating glacial advance and retreat episodes during the last glacial cycle (110.8 ka to 11.7 ka ago). However, glacial chronology is often restricted to the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and records covering the remainder of the last glacial cycle are less well-known in the eastern Mediterranean region. Here, we present a continuous chronology of glacial stages in the east Mediterranean based on cosmogenic 36Cl terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides (TCN) in glacial landforms. We present 105 36Cl ages (43 new and 62 recalculated from previously published studies) from the moraine, landslide, glacial outwash boulders, and limestone bedrock from Mt. Aladağlar (37°8′N, 35°2′E) in the central Taurus Mountains of Southern Türkiye. Three local icefields (Yedigöller, Körmenlik, and Akçay icefields, covering 20 km2, 8 km2, and 7 km2, respectively, and >3000 m above sea level (asl)) occupied the summits in the past. The bedrock ages obtained from the uppermost parts of the Yedigöller Plateau indicate that the peaks (>3400 m, asl) have been ice-free since about 67 ka. Several glacier tongues descended from the icefields through eight main glacial valleys (three on the western and five on the eastern side). The outwash fan along the SW front of Mt. Aladağlar represents the oldest (about 136 ka) glacial deposits developed during the previous glacial cycle. Four other outwash fans yielded ages that range from about 97 ka to 65 ka, indicating deposition during the last cycle. On the western side, the oldest moraine ages (about 46 ka and 38 ka) from two valleys show pre-LGM advances that could be considered the maximum extent of local glaciers. Intriguingly, global LGM moraines (about 23-19 ka) are relatively small and preserved only at high elevations (>2450 m asl). Recalculated ages of seven consecutive moraines in the longest (17.2 km) and the deepest valley on the eastern side indicate Late Glacial (about 15 ka) to Early Holocene (about 12 ka) deglaciation. Several small moraines also show deglaciation (about 12-10 ka) corresponding to the Younger Dryas and the onset of the Holocene. The ages obtained from Mt. The Koryak Highlands are a poorly explored area in terms of glaciation and its connection to climate. The purpose of this work is, using Sentinel-2 images (2019), to assess the state of glaciers at present against the background of climatic trends. Spatial patterns of trends of mean summer and annual temperatures, total precipitation and precipitation for the cold period from 1966 to 2019 were compiled: the temperature trends increase towards the Kamchatka Peninsula, and the mean summer temperature trends increase from 2 to 3°C. Precipitation trends increase from the continent to the coastal zone, with cold season trends changing from 0 to minus 50 mm. As a result, 212 glaciers and 279 rock glaciers were discovered in the Highlands, whereas 112 objects that had previously been recognised were not identified: either there is no glacier, or its area is less than 0.001 km². The reduction in glacier areas compared to the USSR Glacier Inventory (1960s) varies widely by river basin, from 35 to 74%. The mean present glacier area varies from basin to basin from 0.4 to 0.11 km2. The glaciers are mainly corrie type of the N, NE and NW aspects. The analysis and interpretation of 3D topographic change requires methods that achieve low uncertainties in change quantification. Many recent geoscientific studies that perform point cloud-based topographic change analysis have used the Multiscale Model to Model Cloud Comparison (M3C2) algorithm to consider the associated uncertainty. Change measured with the M3C2 approach, however, is difficult to interpret where (1) change occurs in directions different to the direction of change computation or (2) the quantified magnitudes of change are exceeded by the associated uncertainty due to a rough surface morphology. We present a correspondence-driven plane-based M3C2 approach that is tailored to quantifying small-magnitude (< 0.1 m) 3D topographic change of rough surfaces by reducing the uncertainty of quantified change. The approach (1) extracts planar surfaces in point clouds of successive epochs, (2) identifies corresponding planar surfaces between two point clouds using a binary random forest classification, and (3) calculates M3C2 distances and the associated uncertainty between the corresponding planar surfaces. This correspondence-driven plane-based M3C2 does not require recognition or reconstruction of geometrically complex objects but instead quantifies change between less complex, homologous planar surfaces. The approach further allows to relate change directly to a moving object. We apply our approach to a bi-weekly time series of terrestrial laser scanning point clouds acquired at a rock glacier in the Austrian Alps. The approach enables a sevenfold reduction in the uncertainty associated with topographic change compared to standard M3C2. Significant change is therefore detected in 72.62% to 76.41% of the area of change analysis, whereas standard M3C2 detects significant change in only 16.21% (2-week timespan) to 59.96% (10-week timespan) of the same area. The correspondence-driven plane-based M3C2 complements 3D change analysis in applications that aim to quantify small-magnitude topographic change in photogrammetric or laser scanning point clouds with low uncertainties in natural scenes which are characterised by overall rough surface morphology and by individual rigid objects with planar surfaces (e.g., rock glaciers, landslides, debris covered glaciers). Rock glaciers are receiving increased attention as a potential source of water and indicator of climate change in periglacial landscapes. They consist of an ice‐debris mixture, which creeps downslope. Although rock glaciers are a wide‐spread feature on the Tibetan Plateau, characteristics such as its ice fraction are unknown as a superficial debris layer inhibits remote assessments. We investigate one rock glacier in the semiarid western Nyainqêntanglha range (WNR) with a multi‐method approach, which combines geophysical, geological and geomorphological field investigations with remote sensing techniques. Long‐term kinematics of the rock glacier are detected by 4‐year InSAR time series analysis. The ice content and the active layer are examined by electrical resistivity tomography, ground penetrating radar, and environmental seismology. Short‐term activity (11‐days) is captured by a seismic network. Clast analysis shows a sorting of the rock glacier's debris. The rock glacier has three zones, which are defined by the following characteristics: (a) Two predominant lithology types are preserved separately in the superficial debris patterns, (b) heterogeneous kinematics and seismic activity, and (c) distinct ice fractions. Conceptually, the studied rock glacier is discussed as an endmember of the glacier—debris‐covered glacier—rock glacier continuum. This, in turn, can be linked to its location on the semiarid lee‐side of the mountain range against the Indian summer monsoon. Geologically preconditioned and glacially overprinted, the studied rock glacier is suggested to be a recurring example for similar rock glaciers in the WNR. This study highlights how geology, topography and climate influence rock glacier characteristics and development. Plain Language Summary: Climate change has begun to impact all regions of our planet. In cold regions, such as high‐mountain areas, rising temperatures lead to massive melting of glaciers. Besides this evident loss of ice, permafrost, a long‐term ice resource hidden in the subsurface, has started to thaw. Rock glaciers as visible permafrost‐related landforms consist of an ice‐debris mixture, which makes them creep downslope. Due to this movement and their recognizable shape, rock glaciers are permafrost indicators in high‐mountain areas. We investigate one rock glacier in the western Nyaingêntanglha Range (Tibetan Plateau) using field and remote sensing methods to understand its development and to know the current state of its ice core. Our main outcome is, that the heterogeneous creeping behavior, the properties of the debris cover as well as the internal distribution of ice are the results of a continuous development from a glacier into today's rock glacier. In particular, the high ice content in particular sections points to such a glacial precondition. The debris layer covering the internal ice attenuates the effect of climate warming. This makes the rock glacier and similar rock glaciers found in the northern part of the mountain range important future water resources for the semiarid region.
