Americans have been intrigued by and called to travel since the country’s earliest days. Manifest Destiny that led Americans west, the Great Migration that ushered Black Americans north, and summer vacation road trips that take families and friends on new and familiar journeys are but a few of the iconic ways Americans have moved across the country with purpose and intentionality. To facilitate the evolving modes and growing demand of road travelers over time, state and federal governments have directed funds to develop and improve the interstate system that crisscrosses the country. An important and yet often taken for granted aspect of highway infrastructure is the safety rest area. These roadside oases were first envisioned and implemented through the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 with the goal of providing travelers a safe and easy opportunity to stop and tend to basic human needs while on America’s highways. However, rest areas do much more than provide a place to rest and fulfill basic functions. They serve as important avenues for American culture, both reflecting national and regional priorities and interests and shaping aspects of American culture. Travelers who pause long enough will notice how architecture and design are used in rest area facilities, the opportunities that exist for civil engagement, how public health needs are addressed with available amenities, and the rules that are meant to keep travelers safe. If one pauses a bit longer, broader implications for American culture can be observed such as who has – and does not have – access to rest area facilities, how states’ rights verses federal rights play out in America’s institutions, and how rest areas are evolving to meet the needs of the country and its travelers.

The article focuses on a cost-effective coffee hack for summer road trips. Topics include using a portable blender to make a "freeway frappuccino" that costs only U.S. Dollars 2, the comparison between expensive Starbucks frappes and cheaper alternatives from gas stations, and the convenience of a blender that fits in a car cup holder.

Η παρούσα εργασία αποσκοπεί στην κατανόηση της ταξιδιωτικής συμπεριφοράς ορισμένων τουριστών οι οποίοι επιλέγουν να μετακινηθούν σε διαφορετικά μέρη σε ένα ταξίδι τους και δεν παραμένουν σε έναν συγκεκριμένο προορισμό. Πιο αναλυτικά, ερευνώνται οι λόγοι για τους οποίους η διαδρομή για κάποιους ταξιδιώτες είναι πιο σημαντική από τον τελικό προορισμό και ποιες είναι οι διαφορές με τους τουρίστες που επιλέγουν να διαμένουν σε ένα μέρος καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια των διακοπών τους. Στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζεται ο εναλλακτικός τουρισμός και οι μορφές του, τα οφέλη του, οι διαφορές των εναλλακτικών και των μαζικών τουριστών καθώς και κάποια παγκόσμια στατιστικά στοιχεία του εναλλακτικού τουρισμού. Στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο αναλύεται ο τουρισμός περιπέτειας. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, οι δραστηριότητες που περιλαμβάνει, τα χαρακτηριστικά των ταξιδιωτών που επιλέγουν το συγκεκριμένο είδος τουρισμού και παρουσιάζονται και κάποια στατιστικά στοιχεία από όλο τον κόσμο. Επιπροσθέτως, γίνεται μια εκτενής αναφορά στο backpacking και το road trip αλλά και στις διαφορές μεταξύ των τουριστών που επιλέγουν έναν προορισμό και σε αυτούς που επισκέπτονται πολλές διαφορετικές περιοχές κατά τη διάρκεια του ταξιδιού τους. Για να μπορέσει να διερευνηθεί ο σκοπός της παρούσας έρευνας πραγματοποιήθηκε ποιοτική έρευνα μέσω ατομικών συνεντεύξεων σε 8 άτομα, εκ των οποίων οι 5 είναι οι περιπετειώδες τουρίστες και οι 3 οι περισσότερο συμβατικοί. Έτσι, στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο επισημαίνεται η ερευνητική μεθοδολογία όσον αφορά το δείγμα, η διάρκεια της έρευνας που ήταν 6 μήνες και οι δυσκολίες που προέκυψαν κατά την εκπόνησή της αλλά και η διαμόρφωση των συνεντεύξεων. Στο τέταρτο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζονται τα αποτελέσματα των συνεντεύξεων και εν τέλει τα συμπεράσματα της έρευνας.

This thesis is an investigation into the problem of marketing for small businesses with little funds and means for advertisement. Past, present and predicted future methods of marketing prove there is room for improvement in affordability through existing advancements. Literature reviews and case studies explore the most lucrative ways forward. Research also indicates that large numbers of potential consumers are missed by small businesses due to their general lack of embracing newer communication technology such as store apps. This extra support measure provides users with notifications that highlight coupons and deals and has a proven record of success for larger companies with the resources to accommodate. Despite the hurdles of implementing the various forms of marketing, this thesis explores a solution by way of a mobile app to alleviate the burden of travelers finding smaller local businesses en route to a destination. This is due to the unrealistic nature of building and maintaining dedicated store apps, which is an undertaking that many small businesses are not built to maintain. To bridge the gap, it was deduced that an app for all businesses would be effective in reaching out to potential customers in an immediate area by way of GPS and geofencing. Additional research investigates driver safety in relation to mobile applications, which considers color, type, shapes and other aesthetics that can distract drivers from the road.
