An ability to describe the quality of lived experience across the course of an animal's life is of increasing interest in studies on wellbeing in farm animals. Integrity of physical functions is an important aspect of the tripartite model of wellbeing: feeling, functioning and interacting well. This review examines measures of functional integrity as potential indicators of functional (eudaimonic) wellbeing. Copious literature shows that coping with day-to-day fluctuations in the environment influences (1) periodicity of biorhythms, (2) allocation of resources to growth, defence and repair, and (3) rate of biological aging. Here we review opportunities for assessing functional integrity through analysis of (1) the dynamic status of physiological and behavioural variables, (2) the accretion of resources in production tissues (milk, eggs, body mass, offspring) and physical structures (fibre, hoof, bone, tooth, placoid scale, otolith, beak), and (3) biological age. A reduction in periodicity of biorhythms, complexity of behaviours, or uniformity of trajectories of growth and production is often associated with poorer current and future health outcomes and shorter functional longevity. These analytical approaches are grounded in statistical measures of stability in complex dynamic systems. Additionally, the cumulative effect of wear and tear on biological age can be assessed via telomere length, DNA methylation, biomarkers of allostatic load, hair cortisol, and physiological functional capacity. Timeseries of behaviour, physiology and accretion provide a richer record of functional integrity than do cumulative indicators of biological age. Indicators of integrity are needed for each phase of the animal's life course including attainment of developmental competencies, stability of mature performance, and rate of decline with advancing age, to provide a comprehensive record across the whole of the animal's life. The utility of measures may differ between real-time and retrospective assessments and between application to every individual versus sentinels. Further validation is required for interpretating measures of functional integrity as indicators of the functional aspect of wellbeing, together with determining their practicality and reliability before translation to commercial settings is feasible. A single type of indicator of functional wellbeing (e.g. DNA methylation) is unlikely to have utility for all life stages, species, production systems, and environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is well documented that size of various body parts tends to correlate within the same individual. In the current study, we explore the relationship between body weight and some area and lineal beak measurements in a sample of 17 corpses of Greater flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber roseus (10 immatures and 7 adults), collected and after obtaining beak radiographic latero-lateral projections. On images, the following traits were obtained: area of rhinotheca --the sheath covering the maxilla- and gnathotheca --the sheath covering the mandibular-, rhamphotheca height, ocular area, ocular height, ocular width, height, width and area of nares. Our results suggest that some beak measurements are positively correlated with body weight, while nostril area is not. Specifically, rhinotheca and gnathotheca areas and rhamphotheca height were strongly coupled and largely correlated to body weight. The observed differences in beak dimensions are merely a consequence of body weight difference. It is suggested, that the cranial skeleton and musculature are closely linked at least developmentally, allowing for efficient functional integration, but genetic and functional tests must have been performed to reveal the exact nature of the flamingo beak change. Esforço de tração foi aplicado perpendicularmente ao eixo do bico e para realização do ensaio foi utilizado um dinamômetro. O bico íntegro fraturou quando submetido a uma tração de 270,40 N, com deslocamento de 22,59mm. Para a fixação dos bicos fraturados foi utilizada resina acrílica e a área compreendeu uma faixa com 2,0 cm de largura. O segundo bico ensaiado apresentou resistência até 69.75 N. O bico submetido a condicionamento ácido resistiu a uma força de 63,29 N. Outros dois novos ensaios foram realizados, preenchendo-se toda a superfície da rinoteca. Aquele não submetido ao condicionamento ácido resistiu até 134,40 N e, aquele submetido ao condicionamento ácido, resistiu até 101,50 N. No presente trabalho não se observou correlação estatística e, conseqüentemente, diferença entre os procedimentos com utilização prévia de condicionamento ácido e aqueles sem a utilização do mesmo.Traction effort was applied perpendicularly to the axis of toucan beaks and for accomplishment of the essay a dynamometer was used. The beak was completely fractured when submitted to traction of 270.40 N. For fixation of the fractured beaks acrylic resin was applied using a strip of 2.0cm of width. The second beak presented resistance up to 69.75 N. The third beak was submitted to acid conditioning and resisted to force of 63.29 N. Other two new tests were accomplished the whole surface of the rhinotheca filled out. The fourth beak was not submitted to the acid attack and it resisted up to 134.40 N, and the fifth was submitted to the acid etch and it resisted up to 101.50 N. The present work did not observe statistical correlation and, consequently, differences among the procedures with previous use of acid attack and those without the use of the same.

We describe the upper portion of the bill sheath (rhinotheca) of the kākāpō (Strigops habroptilus) from three adult female specimens. The external buccal surface of the rhinotheca is deeply concave with a prominent palatal stop and hardened chevrons creating a ‘milling apparatus’ that the kākāpō uses to grind food. The palatal stop presents a working face of 40–50 mm2. The internal surface of the rhinotheca mirrors the overlying premaxilla and provides a distinct thickened abutment consistent with resistance against the increased workload of the mandibles (gnathotheca) due to the kākāpō’s fibrous diet and chewing style. Along the midline, the rhinotheca at the abutment is up to 5.6 mm thick, compared with as thin as 2.1 mm elsewhere on the midline. The closely relatedNestorparrots have less developed palatal stops, chevrons and abutments on their rhinothecas consistent with their lower preference for fibrous plant material. The form of the rhinotheca agrees with the kākāpō’s feeding ecology as a generalist herbivore that grinds locally available fibrous material to assist digestion. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A juvenile mute swan ( Cygnus olor) was presented with right lateral deviation of the mandible. Radiographs demonstrated a healed fracture of the right mandibular ramis, which had compromised osteogenesis. A corrective osteotomy was performed and an osteogenic distractor was inserted over the lateral aspect of the right mandible. Dental acrylic implants were fixed to the rhinotheca to correct rotational alignment. A pharyngostomy tube was placed to facilitate administration of nutrition and medication. Postoperative images confirmed correct alignment of the mandible in relation to the maxilla. Implants were removed and postoperative complications were not reported. This is the first report of an osteogenic distractor used to correct mandibular deviation in an avian species. Distraction osteogenesis should be considered as a valid surgical option in juvenile or adult avian patients with pathologic bone shortening. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to characterize the structure of the beak of Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco) and to investigate means for arresting fractures in the rhinotheca using acrylic resin. The structure of the rhamphastid bill has been described as a sandwich structured composite having a thin exterior comprised of keratin and a thick foam core constructed of mineralized collagenous rods (trabeculae). The keratinous rhamphotheca consists of superposed polygonal scales (approximately 50µm in diameter and 1µm in thickness). In order to simulate the orientation of loading to which the beak is subjected during exertion of bite force, for example, we conducted flexure tests on the dorso-ventral axis of the maxilla. The initially intact (without induced fracture) beak fractured in the central portion when subjected to a force of 270N, at a displacement of 23mm. The location of this fracture served as a reference for the fractures induced in other beaks tested. The second beak was fractured and repaired by applying resin on both lateral surfaces. The repaired maxilla sustained a force of 70N with 6.5mm deflection. The third maxilla was repaired similarly except that it was conditioned in acid for 60s prior to fixation with resin. It resisted a force of up to 63N at 6mm of deflection. The experimental results were compared with finite element calculations for unfractured beak in bending configuration. The repaired specimens were found to have strength equal to only one third of the intact beak. Finite element simulations allow visualization of how the beak system (sandwich shell and cellular core) sustains high flexural strength. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
