- Abstract
The thesis is written in collaboration with Jönköping municipality's city planning office.Cities are according to Jan Gehl (2010) places where people gather to shop, enjoythemselves and exchange ideas. People's well-being is dependent on public spaces suchas streets, squares, and parks. This report observes social and ecological sustainability aspects as well as whatconstitutes Jönköping municipality's urban planning vision. Dalvik is located in thewest of Jönköping and is the area this project will focus on. Today Dalvik lacks someof the conditions for the area to have good social sustainability. The area is in need ofrevitalization to create a livelier, more inclusive, and more environmentally friendlysociety. The study aims to understand the areas current flaws and from them create adesign proposal by analyzing theories, previous studies, and the publics opinions.Together with the city planning office this report aims to work as a basis for a futureproject regarding the development of Dalvik. The study will be carried out in different steps and will start with examining alreadyexisting literature and analyzing the area to identify its strengths and weaknesses. Theinhabitants of Dalvik will be engaged in the project through a survey to gatherinformation about their experience in contrast to what urban planning theories say aboutthe area. By using earlier literature and the survey responses a design proposal is createdthat will encourage social sustainability for Dalviks center. To give a detailed image ofDalvik and the most important aspects of social sustainability in city planning thisreport will be a case study. The study's credibility is ensured by use of a combination of qualitative and quantitativemethods and aims to produce a high degree of reliability and validity in the survey.
