Amidst growing concerns about climate risks to the U.S. housing markets, strategies to physically retrofit homes are gaining attention—including within debates over how to resolve intersecting crises of housing re/insurability and affordability in highly exposed sites like Florida. We consider an important but under-studied example of this "climate-proofing" strategy unfolding today: Residential Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) finance. While PACE has historically financed decarbonization retrofits, it is increasingly being deployed to facilitate hurricane risk reduction in Florida. In this paper, we introduce PACE: its basic characteristics, evolving uses, and controversies. Exploring the Florida case, we examine two deeper but as yet under-examined financial tensions: PACE's intersections with other forms of property-linked finance (and potential systemic breakdowns) and rising affordability breakpoints as homeowners encounter its new debt amidst other growing and intersecting climate/climate response costs. This experimental study investigates the effectiveness of retrofitting fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) beams using nano-graphene oxide (GO) and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. The primary goal is to evaluate the combined effect of GO and CFRP sheets on the mechanical performance of FRC beams. The experimental program involved preparing and testing multiple concrete beam specimens, with some retrofitted using GO and CFRP sheets. The principal results indicate that the integration of GO significantly enhances the compressive and tensile strength of concrete. Additionally, the application of CFRP sheets markedly improves the flexural strength and ductility of the beams. The retrofitted specimens exhibited higher load-bearing capacity and greater deformation before failure compared to control specimens. The significant conclusions drawn from this study are that the combined use of GO and CFRP sheets provides a synergistic effect, improving the overall mechanical performance of FRC beams. However, failure modes such as debonding and delamination of CFRP sheets highlight the need for optimization in bonding techniques and materials. The primary research outcomes demonstrate that retrofitting FRC beams with GO and CFRP sheets is a promising approach for enhancing the structural performance. This study underscores the potential of advanced materials in structural retrofitting and provides insights for future research to address observed failure modes and further improve the retrofitting techniques. Two large‐scale, single‐storey, single‐bay reinforced concrete (RC) moment frames, designed as per an outdated seismic code to represent a typical framing detail of a four‐storey building, have been tested under displacement‐controlled quasi‐static loading protocol as per ACI 374.1‐05. The RC frames include a plinth beam with brick infill underneath, a slab monolithically cast with the top beam and provision for applying axial load to the column to simulate real construction scenario. One of the frames has been tested as a bare frame, and the second one has been retrofitted with conventional steel braces designed to undergo in‐plane buckling. The size of the brace has been selected based on the result of a nonlinear time history analysis of representative low‐ to mid‐rise open‐ground storey RC buildings. Post‐installed chemical anchors have been utilized to connect the steel braces to the narrow RC frame members following the outcomes of an experimental investigation by the same authors. Local‐level retrofitting by steel jacketing using adhesives has been designed and utilized on columns and beams to achieve the desired seismic response. The seismic performance of the retrofitted frame has been compared with the bare frame in terms of strength, stiffness, ductility, energy dissipation and hysteretic damping. The tests provide insight into the role of the plinth beam, effect of RC slab on the strong‐column weak‐beam aspect and the achievement of the desirable hinge mechanism through a precise design and detailing of global and local level retrofitting technique. EU legislation requires introducing a variety of measures to reduce energy consumption. Energy use decrease should be achieved through thermal retrofitting of the least energy-efficient buildings. In the case of cities like Kraków, this means the need to modernize (retrofitting as well as the incorporation of modern HVAC systems) historical buildings. Furthermore, urban morphology is an influencing factor with regards to the energy performance of buildings and therefore of cities (since the influence of shading from nearby buildings cannot be ignored). The paper presents the results of a study on the impact of shading on energy demand for heating and cooling in the historic centre of Krakow. A comparative analysis of the simulation calculation results was performed using the statistical climate as a boundary condition. In the case of a typical five-floor residential tenement house from the turn of the 20th century, an 8% increase in energy demand for heating and a 50% reduction in energy demand for cooling were estimated. As the analysis of the results shows, taking into account the shading from nearby buildings may be crucial for optimizing the volume (power of devices, diameters of ducts and pipes) of the HVAC installation. Many Italian historic buildings are located in earthquake-prone areas and, therefore, need effective seismic evaluations. Most widespread commercial codes are based on the Equivalent Frame Model (EFM). To investigate their reliability, particularly to assess the effect of tie-rod retrofitting interventions, the present research applies an EFM approach via 3Muri software to a detailed 3D digital model of Villa Vannucchi, a heritage building in southern Italy. The combined use of 3Muri for the 3D global behaviour and linear kinematic approaches for the 2D out-of-plane response shows the need for the installation of tie-rods. Looking at the 2D main facade, the effectiveness of 3Muri in capturing the beneficial effect of tie-rods is investigated against parametric analyses carried out with a standard limit analysis block-based method (BBM). Specifically, using the exact EFM's discretization and boundary conditions, the 3Muri results are benchmarked against the BBM adopting two modelling strategies: BBM pushover analysis with the same modelling strategy and loading conditions used by 3Muri, and BBM tilting tests. With the first strategy, it is shown that BBM provides results in good agreement with 3Muri; however, these results are independent of the tie-rod tension and presence because of inappropriate modelling of loading conditions. Conversely, the second strategy overcomes this drawback by better capturing the positive influence of the tie-rods both in terms of collapse mechanisms and an improved base shear capacity. The results of this research suggest that limit analysis represents a key, useful, and viable tool that needs to be integrated with EFM results in order to better capture the real effectiveness of tie-rod strengthening interventions, allowing for more sustainable consolidation strategies. This review looks at the advancements in shipping-related air pollution prevention in the context of ship life cycle assessment and energy efficiency. It discusses which design option is best for implementing various strategies to lower greenhouse gas emissions. It covers logistics, digitization, environmental requirements, and the greenhouse gases produced. Among the issues for enhancing the propulsion system's performance are air lubrication, ship hull optimization, and hull and propeller maintenance and cleaning. Alternative fuels, wind-assisted propulsion, and nuclear energy are given special attention. Energy-efficient design solutions, risk-based environmental ship design, and retrofitting older ships to improve energy efficiency are also covered. A significant portion of energy consumption currently derives from the building stock, which has harms both the environment and the living standard of occupants, while at the European level, the renovation rate of the current building stock remains low. This study presents a methodology for automated retrofitting scenarios in buildings that enhances user awareness through meaningful visualisations and fosters collaboration of renovation professionals with interoperable software solutions. Commercial design software (Autodesk Revit, Graphisoft ArchiCad) generates the Building Information Model (BIM) in the Industry Foundation Class (IFC) format. IFCs are processed by a parsing tool, which translates IFC files into a comprehensible data model. The proposed framework initially examines the asset-based elements and calculates as-designed energy consumption by extracting information from the produced data model. Based on conducted calculations, the proposed schema identifies mandatory renovation actions and generates scenarios for a variety of examined categories. The final output consists of a renovation roadmap that prioritises changes with the greatest impact based on the demand of the building's stakeholders. The proposed methodology provides a promising approach to help building owners and stakeholders with the identification and prioritisation of energy-saving retrofitting actions, thus contributing to the achievement of energy efficiency goals. This paper seeks to assist in the surveying of listed properties and the considerations that may be taken when addressing whether to insulate solid flooring and, if so, how to go about it. The author seeks to address a variety of potential problems and opportunities that may be found when assessing the property and does not consider this paper to cover all eventualities. One of the main things the author is aware of is the merit of each property needing to be assessed as a unique and individual entity. In many cases, it may also be worth looking at areas within the property itself; different rooms will have different needs, uses and potentially differing existing flooring and will therefore need to be addressed on a room-by-room basis. As the author runs a company that specialises in limecrete flooring, she is aware of her own potential bias and the weighted information that she will provide in her own specialist field. Therefore, this paper does not aim to suggest a single answer approach to the question of insulating solid floors in listed buildings; however, more detail will be given with regard to an insulated limecrete flooring approach. The author does not hold any design liability, and any design ideas described in this paper are based upon her knowledge and experience in the field. In particular, when it comes to limecrete floor design, she is drawing on designs that her company has been given by their customers to work on and the opportunities this has given for consideration in this paper. Recent natural or manmade hazards highlighted the pressing need for allocating enough financial resources for the enhancement of the resilience of infrastructure in our society. In this regard, bridges play a pivotal role in transportation networks, where any reduction in their performance can influence the functionality of the whole network. Bridge retrofitting is a common strategy for enhancing transportation network resilience. Composite reinforcement with different thicknesses and concrete seat extenders with different widths have been used to retrofit an existing curved bridge in Iran. A novel hybrid algorithm called NSGAII-SA was proposed and compared against a simple optimisation strategy, a traditional genetic algorithm solver (NSGA-II), and pure simulated annealing (SA). These optimisation strategies identify the optimal retrofit scenarios set in terms of maximum resilience index, minimum recovery time, and minimum retrofitting cost. For this problem, NSGAII-SA outperforms the traditional NSGA-II. The comparison shows that for this particular application, SA has the best overall performance. However, the proposed NSGAII-SA algorithm has satisfactory performance too, it is a clear improvement over NSGAII and it has the potential to be very useful and better suited than SA for problems with large design spaces and many local minima. Deep learning semantic segmentation techniques applied to 2D facade images hold a great promise in several domains that go far beyond model generation, mainly if the data used are front-parallel or orthonormal photographs. However, effective applications in the field of built heritage have not been adequately explored, largely due to the absence of multidisciplinary teams that include architecture professionals as early as the dataset creation stage. The aim of this research is to introduce a holistic view in order to demonstrate the practical usefulness of state-of-the-art segmentation models to automate high-level cost estimates of urban- scale residential building facade rehabilitations when combined with a connected component analysis. To achieve this, a scalable bottom-up approach is formulated in five simple phases, encompassing both data science and architecture expertise. This strategy seeks to improve the accuracy of analyses at early stages when limited information on constructions is available and there is a significant cost uncertainty, and therefore to optimise the strategies used by construction stakeholders involved in economic feasibility studies and decision-making processes. The building stock is responsible for a large share of global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, therefore, it is critical to promote building retrofit to achieve the proposed carbon and energy neutrality goals. One of the policies implemented in recent years was the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) policy, which proposes building stock benchmarking to identify buildings that require rehabilitation. However, research shows that these mechanisms fail to engage stakeholders in the retrofit process because it is widely seen as a mandatory and complex bureaucracy. This study makes use of an EPC database to integrate machine learning techniques with multi-objective optimization and develop an interface capable of (1) predicting a building's, or household's, energy needs; and (2) providing the user with optimum retrofit solutions, costs, and return on investment. The goal is to provide an open-source, easy-to-use interface that guides the user in the building retrofit process. The energy and EPC prediction models show a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.84 and 0.79, and the optimization results for one case study EPC with a 2000 € budget limit in Évora, Portugal, show decreases of up to 60% in energy needs and return on investments of up to 7 in 3 years. Targeting the great demand for adding non‐structural elevators to old residential buildings, this article proposes an updated configuration of tuned mass damper inerter (U‐TMDI) applied in external non‐structural elevators. An analog 2‐DOF system is established to describe the residential building controlled by an inerter elevator. Then, three closed‐form optimal solutions for designing the U‐TMDI are derived via the fixed‐point method, equal modal damping criterion, and the infinity damping assumption. Subsequently, these optimal solutions are compared and discussed involving the expressions of tuning frequency ratio and the optimal damping parameters, root locus diagram and supplemental damping ratios, transfer function, and robustness to frequency variation, respectively. Finally, a residential building example is adopted to validate the feasibility of the proposed retrofitting strategy and the closed‐form optimal design solutions. It is demonstrated that the optimal tuning frequency ratios derived by the fixed‐point method and equal modal damping criterion are different for U‐TMDI due to the influence of elevator stiffness ratio η$\eta $, while its degradation forms for tuned mass damper (TMD) are identical, recognizing the importance of the elevator stiffness. Moreover, the proposed retrofitting strategy of using an inerter elevator can significantly mitigate the main structure displacement by about 18%∼23% for both far‐field and near‐fault earthquakes. Retrofitting existing residential buildings presents a feasible approach to improving energy efficiency. Therefore, recognising the critical success factors (CSFs) for residential building energy retrofitting (BER) has remained a significant topic in this climate change era. However, given the fragmented nature of past findings, this study reviewed past studies on the CSFs for residential BER. Utilising Arksey and O'Malley's framework, 138 studies were initially examined, with 33 meeting the inclusion criteria and synthesised according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The review started with a bibliometric analysis, including publication trends, types, geographical focus, etc., and found growing interest in this topic amongst authors in China, Germany, Saudi Arabia, the UK, and Europe. The scoping review results highlight seven overarching themes of CSFs: project-, contract-, stakeholder-, team-, financial-, regulation-, and material/technology-related. Notably, the most emphasised across the studies were stakeholder-, project-, regulation-, and financial-related CSFs. A further review of the included studies revealed that the dominant methods used in past studies were factor analysis, regression analysis, social network analysis (SNA), and structural equation modelling (SEM). This study provides valuable insights for regulatory bodies, construction professionals, project managers, and homeowners seeking to develop customised retrofitting solutions, advancing residential BER research and practice. Buildings are a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, with a large portion coming from energy use in housing. In the United Kingdom (UK), most of the housing stock was built before the introduction of building regulations that address energy efficiency and, therefore, needs to be retrofitted if net-zero emission targets are to be met. In this paper, the authors present a study of energy-efficient retrofit measures applied to a typical pre-1930s mid-terrace house, based on a home located in Nottingham, UK. Initially, a series of building envelope improvements aimed at reducing the heating demand were evaluated using dynamic building simulations. Subsequently, low-carbon heating systems were introduced, and their impact was assessed in line with the fabric improvements. Then, the annual energy costs of heating were calculated to understand the financial impact of the retrofit strategies and their cost-effectiveness. Lastly, this study also discussed the overall costs of the retrofit interventions, informed by 224 real cases, in terms of their carbon and energy impact. The findings from the simulations suggested a potential 50% reduction in the heating demand through typical fabric optimisation measures. The adoption of low-carbon heating systems resulted in a 50% reduction in carbon emissions compared to those produced by a typical gas boiler. Furthermore, following the adoption of various fabric optimisation measures, the annual running energy costs of heating decreased by 42% compared to their use in non-retrofit scenarios, highlighting the suitability of low-carbon heating such as heat pumps for installation in well-insulated homes with lower heat output demands. The results stressed the importance of coordinating fabric optimisation with the installation of low-carbon heating to maximise carbon savings and suggested that heat pumps can effectively reduce annual energy expenses and lower carbon footprints. The use of Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) for structural retrofitting requires prior assessment of the composite's mechanical properties, particularly its tensile stress–strain response. This paper presents a LASSO regression model applied to 107 uniaxial tensile tests on Carbon FRCM in order to investigate the impact of both the material and testing parameters on FRCM performance. A highly effective LASSO regression model was trained using k-fold validation, resulting in concise and comprehensible models. Within the testing parameters, both the gripping system and load–speed ratio significantly affected the performance. A substantial impact on ultimate values was found for the load–speed ratio. From the material-related parameters, the most influential was the textile coating in terms of strength and the existence of bilinear or trilinear behaviour. It was also concluded that the combination of textile and matrix properties influenced the stress–strain response at all stages, with high-performance mortars resulting in better textile-to-matrix interaction. The advancement of industrial plants driven by the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies necessitates the modernization of operational machinery, even when such equipment remains in functional condition, to ensure seamless communication across the entire manufacturing process. Moreover, it is crucial to connect these control mechanisms to the centralized plant management system to enhance operational efficiency. This article presents a case study focused on the enhancement of a vertical lathe within an automotive component manufacturing environment. The entire modernization process was systematically executed using high-quality tools, with the implementation of the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) methodology, which proved instrumental in providing real-time management throughout the upgrade process. Additionally, the Single-Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) technique was employed to optimize the machine's setup phase, enabling more rapid tool changes. This paper explores the development of positive energy communities using Eordaia, Greece, as a case study. The approach combines building and district-level energy analysis to achieve nearly zero energy performance through retrofitting, district-level storage systems, and renewable energy technologies. A parametric analysis utilizing RETSCREEN Expert and EnergyPlan software determines the optimal mix of technologies based on technical and financial parameters, with Eordaia, a region in energy transition and part of the RESPONSE Horizon project, illustrating the practical benefits. It includes a neighborhood of 105 mixed-use properties and two municipal buildings where a range of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency measures are applied. Insulation, photovoltaic systems, LED lighting, predictive thermostats, and windows coated with nanotechnology are some of the key interventions considered. The findings show considerable reductions in CO2 emissions and energy use, with payback periods ranging from 8.7 to 9.6 years. This study underscores the value of district-level strategies over individual building retrofits, highlighting cost savings and improved energy performance. The building sector contributes significantly to energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, with many buildings being energy inefficient. In response, the European Green Deal promotes improving energy efficiency to support decarbonization goals. However, managing energy consumption and integrating data from multiple sources presents challenges, especially for large building portfolios. This study introduces a novel methodology designed to optimize energy renovation strategies, balancing technical, financial, and maintenance considerations. The methodology is implemented in CERPlan 1.0, a web-based decision-support platform that combines data on building energy performance, renovation costs, and maintenance needs. Through simulations, CERPlan 1.0 helps decision-makers prioritize retrofit interventions based on economic criteria while leveraging synergies between energy improvements and regular maintenance. Application of this methodology to real estate portfolios reveals opportunities to enhance cost-effectiveness and energy savings. The results show that integrating maintenance into renovation planning reduces payback times and allows for more comprehensive renovation strategies. This paper experimentally investigated the in-plane seismic behavior of perforated masonry walls (pier-spandrel substructures) retrofitted using engineered cementitious composites (ECC). One unreinforced masonry (URM) specimen and two ECC-reinforced masonry substructures were prepared and subjected to pseudostatic cyclic lateral loads. The failure mode, hysteretic curves, strength, deformability, stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity of three specimens were compared and discussed. The results revealed that the failure pattern of masonry pier-spandrel substructure was improved by the ECC layer with shear failure of masonry piers changing to bending failure. Multiple thin cracks were observed on the surface of ECC overlay. Moreover, the external ECC layer effectively increased the load-carrying capacity and ultimate deformation of the substructures, with maximum increases of 104% in strength and 72% in ultimate displacement, respectively. Finally, the excellent energy dissipation capacity was obtained by ECC overlay, which can improve the collapse resistance of masonry structures subjected to strong earthquake action. Continuous reinforced concrete (RC) beams cast in place are commonly used in construction; however, there is a notable gap in the literature regarding the performance of continuous RC beams strengthened with fiber‐reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets. Strengthening RC beams with FRP sheets typically leads to reduced ductility and moment redistribution capacity due to the linear stress–strain behavior of FRP materials compared to non‐strengthened RC beams. Addressing this gap, this study explores the feasibility of enhancing the mechanical properties and ductility of strengthened elements through a hybrid approach, combining carbon‐fiber‐reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass‐fiber‐reinforced polymer (GFRP) sheets. An experimental program was conducted, retrofitting two continuous two‐span RC beams (250 × 150 × 6000 mm) with hybrid CFRP‐GFRP (HCG) sheets. Concentrated loads were applied at the center of each span, and comprehensive data on strains in FRP sheets, longitudinal reinforcements, and crack propagation patterns were recorded and meticulously analyzed. The outcomes demonstrated that employing HCG sheets for strengthening RC continuous beams significantly improves ductility, load‐carrying capacity, and moment redistribution, surpassing the performance of beams strengthened with either CFRP or GFRP sheets. To ensure accurate predictions of the flexural response, an analytical model was developed and rigorously verified using the experimental results. The model takes into account the strain compatibility condition and provides insights into the behavior of continuous RC beams strengthened with CFRP, GFRP, and HCG sheets. This research contributes valuable knowledge to the understanding of FRP sheet strengthening techniques, emphasizing the efficacy of HCG sheets for achieving enhanced structural performance in continuous RC beams. This study experimentally assessed the shear performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with U-shaped High-Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete (HPFRC) under static and fatigue loading. Key parameters included HPFRC jacket thickness and beam shear span–depth (a/d) ratio. Five beams were tested under static loads to determine ultimate shear strengths, followed by fatigue tests on identical beams at 30–70% of ultimate shear strengths at 4 Hz. In static loading experiments, all the HPFRC jacketing proved effective, increasing the shear strength of RC beams by 95% to 130%. Although the strengthening system did not change the failure mode of the beams, the strengthened beams exhibited pseudo-ductile behaviour. As the a/d increased, the shear enhancement capability of the HPFRC jackets decreased. In fatigue loading experiments, all the HPFRC systems improved the fatigue life of RC beams. Specifically, in beams with an a/d ratio of 2.0, the fatigue life was extended from 75 cycles to a maximum of 951 cycles, while in beams with an a/d ratio of 3.5, it increased from 12,525 cycles to 48,786 cycles. In addition, a predictive model has been developed for the fatigue life of HPFRC/UHPFRC shear-strengthened beams, utilising the maximum fatigue load and the design's ultimate shear strength under static loading conditions. This paper emerges from a wider doctoral thesis on the influence and relationships between Antoni Gaudí's buildings and current Chinese architecture. In light of understanding the connections between Eastern and Western designerly approaches to built heritage, we studied the specific case of the renovation of Casa Batlló in Barcelona by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Starting from the general framework of built heritage renovation and transformation techniques and styles, we analysed the approach of this case as a replicable mindset and toolkit for addressing urban and architectural renewal. Kengo Kuma's dissolution of materiality is key to his design approach This methodological case study delves into the potential of a complementary vision of the world where Eastern and Western design approaches retrofit each other.
