We measure the impact of two main signals of tertiary-level human capital accumulation, college quality and certification, on hiring in India. Using a correspondence experiment, we send 16,944 resumes to 1412 job postings for recent engineering graduates at small and medium firms. In precisely estimated results, we find that these employers do not respond to signals of tertiary education quality. Specifically, there is no impact on callbacks of having graduated from a mid-tier college ranked in the top 300 relative to an unranked college outside of the top 1000, despite significant government investment in college rankings. There is also no impact of scoring in the highest as opposed to the lowest quartile of a post-tertiary certification test that has been taken by millions of graduating students. There is evidence that women modestly benefit in the first stage of hiring in this market, with this effect concentrated in some regions.

Six databases were searched along with grey literature. Eligible literature had relevance to academic research institutions, addressed research culture, and were published between January 2017 to May 2022. Evidence was mapped and themed to specific categories. The search strategy, screening and analysis took place between April-May 2022. Results 1666 titles and abstracts, and 924 full text articles were assessed for eligibility. Of these, 253 articles met the eligibility criteria for inclusion. A purposive sampling of relevant websites was drawn from to complement the review, resulting in 102 records included in the review. Key areas for consideration were identified across the four themes of job security, wellbeing and equality of opportunity, teamwork and interdisciplinary, and research quality and accountability. Conclusions There are opportunities for research institutions to improve their own practice, however institutional solutions cannot act in isolation. Research institutions and research funders need to work together to build a more sustainable and inclusive research culture that is diverse in nature and supports individuals’ well-being, career progression and performance.

These centers have become essential in modern times due to their contributions to both scientific and social movements and their impact on public policies of states. They function as research laboratories addressing analysis and investigation processes to establish a predictive framework for the future, not only of the social environment but also of the global context in its intellectual and cultural manifestations. Therefore, these emerging institutions are expected to act as safeguards against negative influences on the identity aspects of society by preserving, inspiring, and reviving heritage in ways that allow it to provide qualitative contributions to the present. Today's reality faces challenges of cultural and existential uniformity, driven by globalization, which seeks to standardize the world through a reductive vision imposing its demagoguery worldwide. This article addresses the need to adopt an intersectional perspective when discussing sexual harassment and violence in academia. The introduction of an intersectional perspective is important since sexual harassment and violence in relation to racial and ethnic minorities seldom revolve exclusively around gender. Recognising the intersectional nature of sexual assault and harassment means also recognising the coexistence of racism and nationalism, the perpetuation of ethnic/racial stereotypes, the multifaceted manifestations of discrimination, and a matrix of domination that exists in our society and educational and research institutions as well. In this article, we analysed official documents of Slovenian higher education and research institutions (public and private ones) with an aim to examine whether and how they address intersectionality and racial/ethnic minorities in their policies combating sexual harassment and violence. This study designed a survey questionnaire encompassing three levels: research institutions, research environment, and research talents, with 19 specific measurement indicators. The questionnaire was distributed to research personnel from over 20 research institutes, universities and related enterprises in China. Based on 537 valid responses, a structural equation model (SEM) was constructed to analyze the relational effects of the driving factors. The findings are as follows: (1) The innovative capability of research talents is a composite outcome of the interaction between multiple "external-internal" factors. Effective organizational support from research institutions and a favorable research environment, both soft and hard, are indispensable elements in enhancing this capability. (2) A key factor in enhancing innovation capability is the proper resolution of effective supply and scientific utilization of research resources by research institutions, along with the improvement of research satisfaction. (3) Research institutions should establish an integrated research mechanism that combines "environment-organization-talent" to achieve the generation and effective transformation of high-quality research outputs. Scientific communication holds a pivotal role within research institutions. This study establishes three distinct categories of indicators, tailored to the unique attributes of these institutions, aiming to assess their performance in scientific communication. Employing a rigorous two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach, we meticulously calculate output efficiency, feedback efficiency, and overall efficiency. Subsequently, we cluster the efficiency outcomes and delve into the factors that influence them. Drawing from the clustering insights and identified influencing factors, we formulate targeted scientific communication strategies tailored to the needs of these research institutions. Science and technology-based entrepreneurship education (SBEE) is crucial for the valorisation of newly developed fundamental knowledge and innovative technology in science faculties. This is an important factor in enabling science to respond to societal challenges related to sustainability. However, its didactics are currently underdeveloped. Experiential learning plays an important role in SBEE. Against this background, the current study addresses the following research question: What are the specifications of experiential learning for further developing the didactics of SBEE, as identified through systematic assessment? The study reveals that significant improvement is possible when systematic attention is paid to the implementation of four core activities of experiential learning: bringing real-worldness into the learning setting, recognising the ill-defined nature of management problems and entrepreneurial challenges, encouraging involvement in the execution of management interventions, and highlighting the importance of reflection. Furthermore, we draw upon the literature stating that for a transformative experiential learning effect, the sole focus on a business logic in current SBEE needs to be transcended to enable such entrepreneurship and sustainability education to contribute to the kind of out-of-the-box technological innovation solutions required for the current, pressing sustainability challenges that society faces. This study provides the first evidence that dedicated attention to critical reflection is a crucial component in the design of the experiential learning process for science- and technology-based entrepreneurship and sustainability education.

Background The Africa Capacity Building Initiative (ACBI) programme aimed to ‘strengthen the research and training capacity of higher education institutions and support the development of individual scientists in sub-Saharan Africa through UK-Africa research collaborations’ including by funding PhD studentships. We conducted research to understand students’ experiences and to see how consortia-based programmes such as ACBI and their own institutions can enhance PhD students’ research environment and progress. Methods In-depth interviews with 35 ACBI-funded PhD students explored their perspectives about how their research and personal development benefitted from belonging to a research consortium. Questionnaires were used to corroborate interview findings. Results Students recognised that membership of a research consortium provided many benefits compared to less well-resourced peers. By drawing on the programme and consortiums’ resources, they were often able to overcome some limitations in their own institution’s systems and facilities. Through their consortia they could access a wide range of international expertise and support from mentors and colleagues for their technical and psychosocial needs. Multiple consortia opportunities for engaging with the international scientific community and for networking, gave them confidence and motivation and enhanced their career prospects. Conclusion Our study and its recommendations highlight how the breadth and diversity of resources available to PhD students through research consortia can be harnessed to facilitate students’ progress and to create a supportive and conducive research environment. It also underlines how, through a multi-level approach, consortia can contribute to longer-term improvements in institutional research environments for PhD students.

The dominance of a few staple crops (maize, rice, and wheat) in most agricultural systems hampers the application of interventions to improve food security and nutrition. Research and development attention has focused on improving the production and utilization of these crops, leaving other crops under‐researched and underutilized. Subsequently, there have been high malnutrition rates due to poor diet diversity, yet there are "opportunity crops" that remain under researched. The opportunity crops can unlock solutions to food insecurity, malnutrition, a lack of biodiversity, and indeed poor climate adaptation. The study explored diversification in agricultural systems to analyze whether reorientation of research investment to include under‐researched crops can increase nutrient gain and enhance dietary diversity. Research outputs benchmarked as the number of publications from three leading African universities, Nairobi, Pretoria, and Ghana, were related to crop diversity and nutrition of crops in five clusters: cereals, vegetables, legumes, roots and tubers, and nuts. The findings show that maize was the predominantly researched crop across the three institutions. Low research outputs were observed for pearl millet, finger millet, and yam across the three institutions: amaranth and nightshade (Pretoria), sweet potatoes (Pretoria and Ghana), Marama bean (Nairobi), and soya bean (Nairobi and Ghana). There was nutrient gain across all five clusters, particularly from under‐researched indigenous crops such as finger millet, amaranth, nightshade, yam, sweet potatoes, Marama bean, and soybean. Nutrient gain was contributed more by cereals and root and tuber crops from Pretoria, vegetables and nuts (Ghana), as well as legumes (Nairobi). The findings demonstrate that incorporating research on the least researched crops with successful integration of other research and development initiatives (policy and dissemination) can increase nutrition and improve dietary diversity. The nutrient gain will positively affect food security and nutrition, contributing to the achievement of Africa Agenda 2063, the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals, and reducing food imports. The findings can inform research investment and decision across different institutions within the African continent. Research investment targeting crops such as finger millet, amaranthus, sweet potatoes, soya beans, and cashew nuts is needed considering the nutritional contribution, climate change adaptability, market potential, and biodiversity contribution. Further analysis should explore production, socio‐economic (marketability and income generation), and environmental gains (adaptive ability to climate change) for specific crops. The development of frameworks to guide the analysis of the nature and scope of factors affecting the contribution of these crops to food security and nutrition, as well as research on specific crops considering geographic distribution and institutional involvement, is also needed. Developing agricultural production not only needed to carry out the land revolution to stimulate the enthusiasm of the people, but also to improve agricultural productivity through the research and promotion of agricultural science and technology. In the Central Soviet area, the Communist Party of China and the Soviet Government set up agricultural test farms, agricultural research schools and agricultural products exhibition institutes to study and promote agricultural science and technology. They achieved good results by actively promoting new technologies and experience in breeding excellent varieties, improving soil, preventing diseases and insect pests, repairing water conservancy, enhancing agricultural tools and afforestation. Research and promotion of agricultural science and technology played an important role in solving the food security in the Central Soviet area, and was the beginning of the leadership of the Communist Party of China. Basic research institutions are a crucial component of China's strategic scientific and technological strength. Efficient evaluation of their development status is an important part in improving China's basic research level and achieving sci-tech selfreliance and self-strengthening at higher levels. Therefore, this study takes the top basic research institution the Max Planck Society as an example to explore the evaluation system constructed by it for its affiliated Max Planck Institutes. Firstly, the study summarizes the evaluation content and characteristics of different evaluation stages in the specific evaluation process of the Max Planck Society. Secondly, it compares and analyzes the key evaluation contents of different periods, and explores the changes of the research institute evaluation system. This paper provides a brief account of the creation and evolution of the CITTA R&D Unit, which, in the early 2000s, emerged from the SPTA, the Planning Division of FEUP’s Civil Engineering Department (DEC). Attention is given to the birth of the Centre, marked by the convergence of some favourable external and internal conditions, which also shaped its composition, structure, and scientific scope. The CITTA development phase is then characterised. This phase was influenced by the pluriannual evaluation of the FCT in 2008 and, a few years later, by the integration of a large group of researchers from the University of Coimbra, which justified the profound revision of the CITTA’s internal regulations. Scientific communication holds a pivotal role within research institutions. This study establishes three distinct categories of indicators, tailored to the unique attributes of these institutions, aiming to assess their performance in scientific communication. Employing a rigorous two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach, we meticulously calculate output efficiency, feedback efficiency, and overall efficiency. Subsequently, we cluster the efficiency outcomes and delve into the factors that influence them. Drawing from the clustering insights and identified influencing factors, we formulate targeted scientific communication strategies tailored to the needs of these research institutions.

Introduction: Works produced within universities and research institutes aim to provide high innovative technological or sociocultural solutions to society's challenges. Pharmaceutical industrialization is a socio-health issue in Côte d'Ivoire. Indeed the pharmaceutical production, although essential, is still in its infancy. Our objective is to take stock of the works carried out on this activity within the faculty of Pharmacy in Côte d'Ivoire in order to assess the contribution of this unit of research to its boom. Methodology: We’ve listed the theses and dissertations defended on the pharmaceutical production since the opening of the faculty, have described them and then we’ve analysed the results and recommendations of the authors of works. Results: During this preliminary study, out of the 25 documents available, 18 (72.0%) of the works focused on the development of galenic and cosmetic formulations, including 08 (32.0%) based on natural substances, in terms of development and evaluation of formulation parameters; 04 (16,0%) focused on the difficulties of the industrial process and 03 (12.0%) on the political and regulatory aspects. The works on the regulation of the activity, which was more transversal, presented the legal, institutional and political framework as harmonious, but highlighted other factors that need to be legislated. Conclusion: The preponderance of works on technical aspects that take into account our local realities confirms the expected contribution of universities through basic and applied research. The regulation remains an essential point also to implementate and organize. State support and public-private partnerships are still needed for the pharmaceutical industrialization.

AbstractRecently, there has been an increased interest in the well-being of students in higher education. Despite the widespread consensus on the importance of student well-being, a clear definition continues to be lacking. This study qualitatively examined the student perspective on the topic through semi-structured interviews at a university of applied sciences in the Netherlands (n = 27). A major recurring theme was well-being as a balance in the interplay between efforts directed towards studies and life beyond studies. This method of perceiving well-being deviates from theoretical definitions. Students mentioned various factors that influence their well-being. Responses ranged from personal and university related factors to external factors beyond their educational institution. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on the well-being of students in higher education and provides suggestions for educational institutions, such as incorporating a holistic perspective on students and learning; and focus points for the development of policies and practices.

Each country has its own set of unique elements and institutions to foster innovation within its boundaries. This combination of elements and institutions is known as an innovation system. Innovation has been used to boost countries' growth and competitiveness for decades. However, it is a much questioned strategy because it may compromise the opportunities of future generations and thus sustainable development. Hence, academics and policymakers are now turning to eco‐innovation to create sustainability‐based innovation systems that improve not only a country's economic efficiency but also people's well‐being and quality of life. However, the uncertainty and complexity around eco‐innovation hinder the creation and implementation of eco‐innovation policies because of a failure to identify its drivers. The aim of this paper is to detect the national‐level factors that are necessary or sufficient for eco‐innovation in European countries. Fuzzy‐set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) is used for this purpose. The conditions in this analysis are governance, human capital capacity, research institutions, and public and private research and development (R&D) investment. The use of fsQCA to study eco‐innovation systems is methodologically unique. The findings suggest that research institutions, human capital capacity, and public R&D investment are valuable for eco‐innovation. Therefore, the findings of this study have implications for the design of policies aimed at creating businesses, enriching society, and boosting sustainable development through eco‐innovation. This study examines the impact of the Fraunhofer Society, Europe's largest network of applied research institutes, on patent applications. A difference-in-differences strategy was employed exploiting the establishment of five new Fraunhofer centres in the 2000s. The panel includes 65,963 European applicants (both firms and independent inventors) between 1980 and 2019. The results show that establishing a centre increases patent output by at least 13%, robust to using applicants of cities that established a centre by the end of the 2010s as an alternative control group. The effect is driven by an increase in applicants' productivity and not by agglomeration dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of the brain sciences (Hirnforschung) in the Max Planck Society (MPG) during the early decades of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) was influenced by the legacy of its precursor institution, the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Advancement of Science (KWG). The KWG's brain science institutes, along with their intramural psychiatry and neurology research programs, were of considerable interest to the Western Allies and former administrators of the German science and education systems in their plans to rebuild the extra-university research society—first in the British Occupation Zone and later in the American and French Occupation Zones. This formation process occurred under the physicist Max Planck (1858–1947) as acting president, and the MPG was named in his honor when it was formally established in 1948. In comparison to other international developments in the brain sciences, it was neuropathology as well as neurohistology that initially dominated postwar brain research activities in West Germany. In regard to its KWG past, at least four historical factors can be identified that explain the dislocated structural and social features of the MPG during the postwar period: first, the disruption of previously existing interactions between German brain scientists and international colleagues; second, the German educational structures that countered interdisciplinary developments through their structural focus on medical research disciplines during the postwar period; third, the moral misconduct of earlier KWG scientists and scholars during the National Socialism period; and, fourth, the deep rupture that appeared through the forced migration of many Jewish and oppositional neuroscientists who sought to find exile after 1933 in countries where they had already held active collaborations since the 1910s and 1920s. This article examines several trends in the MPG's disrupted relational processes as it sought to grapple with its broken past, beginning with the period of reinauguration of relevant Max Planck Institutes in brain science and culminating with the establishment of the Presidential Research Program on the History of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society in National Socialism in 1997. This study explains workplace conflicts (interpersonal and task-related) as antecedents of knowledge-hiding behaviors. Moreover, a relational psychological contract breach is a mediator between workplace conflicts and knowledge-hiding behavior. For empirical evidence, data were collected from research and development institutions in Pakistan. The results confirm the significant association between conflicts and knowledge-hiding behaviors and the mediating role of relational psychological contract breach.The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of workplace conflicts (interpersonal conflict and task-related conflict) on knowledge-hiding behaviors (evasive hiding, playing dumb, and rationalized hiding). Besides, a relational psychological contract breach is used as a mediator between workplace conflicts and knowledge-hiding behaviors. By using a simple random sampling technique and time lag strategy, the data were collected from 408 employees working in research and development institutions in Pakistan. For analyses, this study employed partial least squares structural equation modeling statistical technique by using SmartPls-3 software. The results of the study confirm the significant relationship between workplace conflicts and knowledge-hiding behaviors. Relational psychological contract breach also significantly mediates the relationship between conflicts and knowledge-hiding behaviors. However, this study found an insignificant association between interpersonal conflict and evasive knowledge hiding.

Indicators of productivity and impact of research institutions are based on counts of the institution members' publications and the citations those publications attracted. How can scientometricians count publications and citations on the meso-level (here, institution level)? There are three variables: the institution's scientific staff in the observed time frame, their publications in that time, and the publications' citations. Considering co-authorship of the publications, one can count 1 for every author (whole counting) or 1/n for n co-authors (fractional counting). One can apply this procedure to publications as well as citations. New in this article is the consideration of complete lists of scientific staff members, which include the exact extent of employment, to calculate the labor input based on full-time equivalents (FTE) and also of complete lists of publications by those staff members. This approach enables a size-independent calculation of labor productivity (number of publications per FTE) and labor impact (number of citations per FTE) on the meso-level. Additionally, we experiment with the difference and the quotient between summarizing values from the micro-level (person level) and aggregating whole counting values directly on the meso-level as an indicator for the institution's predominant internal or external co-authorship. The main aim of the article is to examine how cooperation with research institutions influences technological maturity of enterprises. It is accompanied with the additional aim, which is to assess the role of innovation policy interventions in this process, as captured by the concept of behavioral additionality, which is one of the externalities of public support for R&D. The focus of this article is put on one of the specific types of behavioral additionality—cooperation additionality—which takes place in the situation where public support influences the collaboration behavior of a firm receiving R&D support. The study was conducted with the use of firm-level data collected in a survey on the sample of 464 enterprises operating within national smart specializations in Poland. The results of the research suggest that public funding fosters the cooperation between scientific institutions and enterprises, thus confirms the cooperation additionality.

Background: The crisis in research culture is well documented, covering issues such as a tendency for quantity over quality, unhealthy competitive environments, and assessment based on publications, journal prestige and funding. In response, research institutions need to assess their own practices to promote and advocate for change in the current research ecosystem., Aims: The purpose of the scoping review was to explore ' What does the evidence say about the 'problem' with 'poor' research culture, what are the benefits of 'good' research culture, and what does 'good' look like?', Methods: A scoping review was undertaken. Six databases were searched along with grey literature. Eligible literature had relevance to academic research institutions, addressed research culture, and were published between January 2017 to May 2022. Evidence was mapped and themed to specific categories. The search strategy, screening and analysis took place between April-May 2022., Results: 1666 titles and abstracts, and 924 full text articles were assessed for eligibility. Of these, 253 articles met the eligibility criteria for inclusion. A purposive sampling of relevant websites was drawn from to complement the review, resulting in 102 records included in the review. Key areas for consideration were identified across the four themes of job security, wellbeing and equality of opportunity, teamwork and interdisciplinary, and research quality and accountability., Conclusions: There are opportunities for research institutions to improve their own practice, however institutional solutions cannot act in isolation.
