Simple Summary: Nutrient manipulation during the peripartum and suckling periods can significantly impact the productivity of Hanwoo cows and their offspring. This study investigated the effects of feeding nutrient-enriched formula feed compared to moderate formula feed on 183 pregnant Hanwoo cows and their 180 offspring. Results indicated that cows receiving the enriched diet had better body weight recovery postpartum, and their offspring showed higher growth performance. Additionally, the interval to first estrus return and days open were reduced in the nutrient-enriched group. Plasma non-esterified fatty acids, albumin, and progesterone concentrations of Hanwoo cows varied between groups at the 3 months before and after calving. Offspring in the treatment group had higher body weight and average daily gain at birth, three and six months of age, with higher dry matter intake. The efficient conversion of tissues into reproductive success is a crucial aspect affecting the evolution of life histories. Masting, the interannually variable and synchronous seed production in perennial plants, is a strategy that can enhance reproductive efficiency by mitigating seed predation and pollen limitation. However, evaluating benefits is insufficient to establish whether efficiency has improved, as such assessments neglect the associated costs of masting, particularly during the critical seed‐to‐seedling stage. We conducted a parentage analysis of seedlings and adults in a population of 209 Sorbus aucuparia trees, monitored over 23 years, providing pioneering documentation of the effects of masting on the fitness of individual trees beyond the seed stage. Our results show high costs of interannual variation that can be mitigated by high synchrony and reveal the existence of phenotypes that appear to reap the benefits of masting while avoiding its costs through regular reproduction. We aimed to evaluate the metabolic and performance differences in primiparous Nellore cows, which became pregnant at 14 or 24-mo old. Thirty-eight cows with 202 ± 5 days of gestation were divided into two treatments according to breeding age: 14 or 24-mo. Cows were evaluated for body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), carcass characteristics, milk yield, calves’s performance, and blood characteristics. The animals were managed in eight paddocks under continuous grazing and evaluated from 90 d before parturition until 240 d after calving. We observed an interaction between breeding age and time (P < 0.01) for cow BW. Both breeding age categories experienced BW loss during parturition, with a concurrent decrease in BCS. However, following their first calving, the BW of 24-mo cows remained stable (P > 0.05), whereas 14-mo cows exhibited a gradual recovery in BW after parturition (P < 0.05). Milk yield was greater in 24-mo animals (P < 0.01), but decreased with increasing milking days (p < 0.05) for both groups. The weight gain calves from the heifers bred at 24-mo was greater (P < 0.01), which reflected in greater BW at weaning. The beta-hydroxybutyrate (β-OHB) concentration was greater before calving and a marked decrease after parturition (P < 0.05). The 24-mo cows had greater blood β-OHB (P < 0.01) at prepartum and 30 days after calving. Blood progesterone was greater in 24-mo cows (P > 0.05). Primiparous beef cows that conceive at either 14 or 24-months of age exhibit distinct nutritional requirements and metabolic profiles. Notably, cows that conceive at 24-months of age have the advantage of weaning heavier calves and displaying a more consistent reproductive cycle following their first calving than cows that conceive at 14-months. In the present study, a comparative global high-throughput proteomic analysis strategy was used to identify proteomic differences between estrus and diestrus stage of estrous cycle in dairy cows. Saliva was collected from cows during estrus and diestrus, and subjected to LC-MS/MS-based proteomic analysis. A total of 2842 proteins were detected in the saliva of cows, out of which, 2437 and 1428 non-redundant proteins were identified in estrous and diestrous saliva, respectively. Further, it was found that 1414 and 405 salivary proteins were specific to estrus and diestrus, respectively while 1023 proteins were common to both groups. Among the significantly dysregulated proteins, the expression of 56 proteins was down-regulated (abundance ratio <0.5) while 40 proteins were up-regulated (abundance ratio > 2) in estrous compared to diestrous saliva. The proteins, such as HSD17B12, INHBA, HSP70, ENO1, SRD5A1, MOS, AMH, ECE2, PDGFA, OPRK1, SYN1, CCNC, PLIN5, CETN1, AKR1C4, NMNAT1, CYP2E1, and CYP19A1 were detected only in the saliva samples derived from estrous cows. Considerable number of proteins detected in the saliva of estrous cows were found to be involved in metabolic pathway, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, toll-like receptor signaling pathway, steroid biosynthesis pathway, insulin signaling pathway, calcium signaling pathway, estrogen signaling pathway, oxytocin signaling pathway, TGF-β signaling pathway and oocyte meiosis. On the other hand, proteins detected in saliva of diestrous cows were involved mainly in metabolic pathway. Scrotal circumference (SC) is the main indicator of sperm production potential, this dimension is used to increase the reproductive capacity of bulls. SC can be used as a criterion for fertility selection in cattle farms. The objective of the research is to review the importance of reproductive evaluation of the bull and the correlation of scrotal circumference with semen quality. A bibliographic review was carried out to demonstrate the main advantages of testicular size and weight in young bulls since it is highly correlated with scrotal circumference, which is the main indicator of sperm production potential. It was concluded that selecting young bulls with a good scrotal circumference has benefits, since they produce more semen of higher quality compared to bulls of the same age, but with smaller testicles. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small highly conserved non-coding RNA molecules that orchestrate a wide range of biological processes through post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. During development, miRNAs play a key role in driving embryo patterning and morphogenesis in a specific and stage-dependent manner. Here, we investigated whether sperm from bulls with different fertilizing ability in vitro influence blastocyst quality and miRNA content. Results demonstrate that blastocysts obtained using sperm from high fertility sires (H group) display significantly greater cleavage and blastocyst development as well as greater transcript abundance in blastocysts for the developmental competence markers CDX2 , KRT8 , NANOG , OCT4 , PLAC8 , PTGS2 , SOX17 , and SOX2 , compared to blastocysts generated using sperm from low fertility sires (L group). In parallel, high throughput deep sequencing and differential expression studies revealed that H blastocysts exhibit a greater miRNA content compared to L blastocysts, with hsa-miR-4755–5p and hsa-miR-548d-3p uniquely detected in the H group, and greater abundance of hsa-miR-1225–3p in the H group. Gene ontology (GO) and KEGG pathway analyses indicated that the 3 differentially expressed miRNAs identified are involved in the regulation of many biological mechanisms with a key role in aspects of early embryo development, including transcriptional regulation, cellular biosynthesis, nucleic acid metabolism, cellular differentiation, apoptosis, cytoskeleton remodeling, cell-to-cell interactions, and endocytosis. Overall, our results indicate that sperm fertilizing ability influences blastocyst developmental ability and miRNA content. The present study evaluated follicular and endocrine dynamics during ReBreed21, a reproductive strategy that allows resynchronization of ovulation every 21 days in Bos indicus (Nelore) heifers. A synchronized estrous cycle was induced using a standard timed ovulation protocol (d −10: P4 implant inserted + 2 mg estradiol benzoate; d −2: P4 removed+ 0.5 mg cloprostenol + 0.6 mg estradiol cypionate + 200 IU equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG); d0: 8.4 μg buserelin) without AI to ensure nonpregnancy in heifers. Day of GnRH was designated d0 of estrous cycle. On d12, heifers (n = 80) were randomized into three experimental groups: (1) ReBreed21 (n = 28) d12 P4 device inserted, d19 P4 device withdrawal plus 200 IU eCG, and d21 8.4 μg buserelin (GnRH); (2) ReBreed21+G (n = 26) same as ReBreed21 plus GnRH (16.8 μg) treatment on d12; and (3) Control (n = 26) no treatment. ReBreed21+G increased two-fold (62.9%; 18/26) percentage of heifers with synchronized follicular wave emergence compared to Control (34.6%; 9/26) whereas ReBreed21 (53.6%; 15/28) was intermediate. The ReBreeed21 groups (eCG on d19) increased (P < 0.01) follicular growth between d19 and d21 in ReBreed21 (2.3 ± 0.2 mm) and ReBreed21+G (3.4 ± 0.2 mm) compared with Control (1.2 ± 0.3 mm), resulting in greater (P < 0.01) follicle diameter on d21 for ReBreed21 (10.7 ± 0.4 mm) and ReBreed21+G (10.8 ± 0.4 mm) compared with Control (9.1 ± 0.5 mm). Structural luteolysis was similar among groups (P = 0.51), although the average day when P4 was <1 ng/mL was later (P < 0.01) for ReBreed21 (20.5 ± 0.2) and ReBreed21+G (20.7 ± 0.2) compared to Control (19.2 ± 0.4). Overall ovulation at the end of the estrous cycle was increased (P = 0.03) for ReBreed21 groups (83.3%; 45/54) compared with Control (57.7%; 15/26). Synchronized ovulation on day 22–23 was greater (P < 0.01) for ReBreed21 (78.6%; 22/28) and ReBreed21+G (76.9%; 20/26) compared with Control (30.8%; 8/26). The Cholistani cow is considered one of the milch breeds of Zebu cattle. Despite being heat and tick-resistant, it has not yet gained much popularity among Pakistan dairy farmers due to its long calving interval. This study aimed to understand the basic reproductive physiology of Cholistani cows using sonography and reproductive biotechnologies such as estrus synchronization and timed artificial insemination to improve reproductive efficiency. In experiment 1, six Cholistani cows with mixed parity 3.20 ± 1.30 and weighing 400 kg were selected to monitor ovarian dynamics on alternate days by the same sonographer from the onset of heat through ovulation until the next ovulation. Experiment 2 measured the effect of estrus synchronization methods, controlled internal drug release-gonadotropin-releasing hormone (CIDR-GnRH, n = 31) and Ovsynch (OVS, n = 32) on various reproductive parameters. The mean estrous cycle length was 19.81 ± 0.56 days with two follicular waves. The mean interovulatory interval was 20.80 ± 0.52 days, with a preovulatory follicular size of 13.83 ± 2.37 mm. Estrus response was higher (p > 0.05) in controlled internal drug release (CIDR)-GnRH (93.54%) than in OVS (84.37%) cows. Similarly, ovulation and conception rates were higher in CIDR-GnRH (91.66% vs. 68.42%) than in OVS cows (41.37% vs. 33.33%), respectively. In conclusion, CIDR-GnRH results in a better estrus response, higher ovulation rate, and subsequently greater conception rate than OVS in Bos indicus dairy cows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Poor semen quality, especially in frozen-thawed semen used in artificial insemination (AI) have been shown to influence conception outcomes, resulting a negative impact on livestock production. Recent advancements in genetic research have identified specific markers linked to semen quality traits in various livestock species, such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, buffalo, and equines. These genetic markers are essential in screening males for breeding suitability, which in turn enhances selective breeding programs. Understanding these markers is crucial for improving reproductive performance and increasing productivity in livestock populations. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the genetic markers associated with semen quality in key livestock. It explores the underlying genetic mechanisms and their practical implications in animal breeding and management. The review underscores the importance of integrating genetic insights into breeding strategies to optimize reproductive efficiency and ensure the sustainable development of livestock industries.

To meet the increasing demand of sustainable dairy and beef products of a more competitive international market, it is key to improve the reproductive efficiency of our local livestock systems. Bovine reproductive failure is usually linked to infectious causes. Nevertheless, they could be related with other non-infectious causes provoking infertility, abortion, and perinatal deaths in cattle. Estrus synchronization is important for improving sheep reproduction. To enhance sheep reproduction efficiency, this study investigated the impact of different durations (7 vs. 14 days) and fluorogestone acetate (FGA) doses in intravaginal sponges on estrus synchronization and early pregnancy detection in Ossimi sheep. Two hundred ewes were evenly divided into two groups, each receiving a full 40 mg or a halved 20 mg FGA sponge for their respective durations. The study aimed to optimize breeding efficiency by examining the effectiveness of these treatments in synchronizing estrous cycles and by evaluating the use of serum levels of pregnancy-associated glycoprotein 1 (PAG1) and progesterone (P4) as markers for early pregnancy identification. Prostaglandin F2α and equine chorionic gonadotropin were administered to enhance the synchronization process. Results highlighted that the 7-day treatment protocol significantly improved estrus, pregnancy, and lambing rates compared to the 14-day protocol. Furthermore, pregnant ewes demonstrated elevated levels of PAG1 and P4, with PAG1 levels particularly higher in ewes with multiple pregnancies. The findings underscore that the shorter duration of FGA treatment is more effective for reproductive management in Ossimi sheep without significantly affecting PAG1 levels based on the dose or duration of FGA. PAG1 also proved to be a reliable marker for early pregnancy detection, offering a promising approach to identifying fetal numbers early in pregnancy. This research suggests optimizing FGA sponge use could be cost-efficient for improving reproductive efficiency and early pregnancy management in sheep.

The present study was aimed at optimizing the selection strategy for enhancing reproductive efficiency and milk productivity of Alpine × Beetal crossbred goats. The data set included 2949 milk trait records across parities and 1389 milk records from first parity and corresponding reproductive traits. The traits included for analysis were 150‐day milk yield (150DMY), days in milk (DIM), peak yield (PY) and total milk yield (TMY). The litter size (LS) and litter weight (LW) were used for specifically formulating selection plan using indirect selection. The least squares mean for lactation traits during the first parity were 150DMY: 195.32 ± 2.09 kg, DIM: 236.42 ± 3.04 days, PY: 1.82 ± 0.02 kg, TMY: 269.62 ± 4.52 kg. Notably, Alpine × Beetal goats demonstrated genetic superiority pan India for milk productivity as compared to other native goat breeds. The least squares mean for 150DMY across all parities was 236 ± 3.13 kg. An animal model employing average information restricted maximum likelihood was used for (co)variance component estimation to get the genetic parameters. The analysis revealed total heritability estimates for 150DMY, DIM, PY and TMY as 0.18 ± 0.06, 0.04 ± 0.04, 0.12 ± 0.06 and 0.08 ± 0.05, respectively. Repeatability estimates for 150DMY, DIM, and TMY were 0.28 ± 0.04, 0.21 ± 0.03 and 0.37 ± 0.03, respectively. Bivariate analysis of 150DMY with reproductive traits revealed heritability for LS and LW as 0.05 ± 0.01 and 0.10 ± 0.01, respectively using Gibbs sampling. Strong and positive genetic correlations of 150DMY with other production and reproduction traits was observed, such as DIM (0.72), PY (0.98), TMY (0.88), LS (0.57) and LW (0.33). Moderate heritability and repeatability estimate of 150DMY, along with its positive correlation with production and reproductive traits suggested it as a suitable selection criterion for early selection and overall genetic progress of lactation traits. The genetic trend analysis showed an overall improvement in all these traits, with observed gain of 98.4 g per year for 150DMY, 0.04 days per year for DIM, 0.5 g per year for PY and 220.5 g per year for TMY. We observed that selecting based on 150DMY would lead to a favourable indirect improvement for LW as 79 g and LS 0.04 units per generation. We, therefore, recommend employing 150DMY as the single trait selection criteria to enhance both milk productivity and reproductive potential of Alpine × Beetal goats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The age at first calving (AFC) is one of the most used indicators to evaluate the efficiency of rearing systems in dairy herds. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the association between AFC and different parameters of productive and reproductive efficiency in dairy cows of Holstein and Jersey breeds and their crosses, reared under pasture-based conditions. A retrospective longitudinal study was carried out with information on the performance of 77,311 cows with birth and culling dates between 1990 and 2016 from 654 specialized dairy herds located in mid and high-altitude regions of Costa Rica. Cows were classified into five classes according to their age in months at first calving (≤24, 25–27, 28–30, 31–33, ≥34). A generalized linear mixed model was used to assess the effect of AFC and breed factors on milk production (first lactation, lifetime total, and per day of life), open period (first calving and lifetime total), and herd life. The mean AFC was 29.5, 29.1, and 28.0 months for Holstein, Holstein × Jersey, and Jersey, respectively. The AFC was significantly associated (p < 0.01) with all the variables evaluated. Cows with AFC ≤ 24 presented a higher (p < 0.01) milk production (total lifetime and per day of life), as well as a longer herd life, compared to cows in classes of AFC > 28 m. The reduction in AFC contributes to a significant increase in the production and reproduction efficiency of pasture-based dairy herds. This effect was consistent across the three breed groups. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of Moringa oleifera leaf meal (MOLM) supplementation on nutrient utilization, milk yield, and reproductive performance of early lactating Sahiwal cows. Control cows (GC) received a basal diet, while the treatment cows (GM) were supplemented with concentrate comprising 12% MOLM. Ovarian activity and uterine involution were monitored by trans-rectal ultrasonography on the 21st, 28th, 35th, and 42nd days postpartum. The result indicated that MOLM-supplemented cows required fewer days (P ≤ 0.05) to complete uterine involution. As lactation progresses, there was a significant reduction (P ≤ 0.05) in the diameter of the cervix and uterine horns in GM than GC. There was a significant increase in the number of follicles on the 21st day and average milk yield in GM than GC. The incidence of endometritis and cystic ovarian disease was less in MOLM supplemented group. The use of MOLM in the diet reduced the total cost per cow per successful service. It is concluded that MOLM can be safely included at 12% in the diet of early lactating cows to modulate the reproductive performances of dairy cows. The optimal environments for ruminants are air temperatures between 13 and 20 °C, winds between 5 and 18 km/h, humidity levels between 55 and 65%, and a moderate amount of sunlight. In tropical and subtropical regions, climate is the top factor restricting animal growth and reproductive efficiency. The digestive system, blood biochemical components, and hormones all go through a range of physiological changes at high temperatures. Ruminant animals respond to heat stress by drinking more water, breathing more quickly, panting, and raising their rectal temperatures while reducing their activity levels, intake of roughage, and rumination. Blood metabolites and biochemical modifications are negatively impacted by the concentration of blood biochemical components and hormonal levels, particularly those of anabolic hormones, which are decreased as a result of the animals’ exposure to high environmental temperatures. Changes in blood metabolite and hormone levels were influenced by the duration of exposure to high temperatures, the level of background heat, and the species, breed, and age of the animals. The major biological changes caused by heat stress have a negative impact on growth, milk production, and reproduction. Animals subjected to high environmental temperatures also undergo reductions in feed intake and feed efficiency. These changes eventually impair ruminant reproduction and production abilities. Simple Summary: The escalating demand for meat, propelled by a worldwide surge in population and economic development, necessitates the implementation of sustainable approaches for animal feed production. This study investigated the impact of incorporating black soldier fly (BSF; scientific name: Hermetia illucens) meal into the diets of sows and piglets as a potential substitute for conventional protein sources on sow fertility, blood parameters, piglet growth, and intestinal tissue structure. Consuming BSF instead of animal or soybean proteins did not deteriorate sow reproductive performance. The feed conversion ratio from 28- to 35-day-old piglets was lower in BSF-fed groups despite no discernible disparities in growth; this indicated that it may be beneficial to optimize the rate of replacing animal proteins with BSF meal, preferably along with chitin removal from BSF meal to improve digestibility. Furthermore, minor variations in blood cell composition and properties were observed in 28-day-old piglets, with elevated high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in the high-BSF group, which may be attributed to the unique fatty acid composition of BSF. This study investigated the effects of substituting conventional protein resources in sow and piglet dietary regimens with black soldier fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens) meal on reproductive efficiency, blood profile, piglet growth, and intestinal tissue morphology. The results indicate that substituting animal-derived and soy proteins with BSF meal does not compromise sow reproductive performance. Although no notable disparities were observed in piglet growth, the feed conversion ratio from the 28- to 35-day age marks were lower in the BSF-fed groups. This suggests that the animal protein-BSF substitution rate may require optimization, potentially involving chitin removal from BSF meal to enhance digestibility. Minor variations in the hematological composition and properties in piglets, with elevated high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in the high BSF group at the 28-day mark, were potentially attributable to the unique fatty acid composition of BSF meal. Moreover, this study potentiates future exploration into the efficacy of complete animal protein substitution with BSF meals on piglet nutrition and physiology, particularly in fattening pigs. ABSTRACT: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the impacts of vitamin A (VA) supplementation in feed at levels of 0 (control), 2,000, 4,000, 6,000, and 8,000 IU VA/kg diet on the reproductive efficiency and antioxidative properties of aged Sinai laying hens at 52 wk of age (n = 300 females and 30 males) in 6 replicates (10 females + 1 male/replicate). As well as blood biochemical indicators, carcass characteristics, growth performance, immunity, and the antioxidative status of their chicks. Results showed that diets supplemented with 2,000 or 6,000 IU/kg of VA increased fertility rate and decreased early embryonic mortality (P < 0.05). Increasing VA from 4,000 to 6,000 IU/kg significantly boosted hatchability rates. All VA levels significantly enhanced glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) and late embryonic mortality. In the shell gland, dietary supplementation of 6,000 or 8,000 IU/kg of VA enhanced actions of GPx actions, catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). In hatched chicks, all VA levels boosted (P < 0.05) hemoglobin, red blood cell count, and serum concentration of total proteins and IgA while decreasing eosinophils percentage and aspartate aminotransferase activity (AST) concentration. Dietary VA supplementations from 4,000 to 8,000 IU/kg improved lymphocytes, serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC), SOD, and IgM, while decreasing heterophils, heterophils/lymphocytes ratio, and creatinine in hatched chicks. Serum triglyceride concentration was reduced by adding 6,000 or 8,000 IU/kg of VA, while globulin and high-density lipoprotein concentrations were heightened only by 8,000 IU/kg of VA. It could be concluded that the dietary supplementation of VA (6,000 IU/kg) improved reproductive efficiency and antioxidative status in the liver and the shell gland of aged laying hens and improved hemato-biochemicals parameters, antioxidative status, and immunity of their offspring.

The age at first calving (AFC) is one of the most used indicators to evaluate the efficiency of rearing systems in dairy herds. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the association between AFC and different parameters of productive and reproductive efficiency in dairy cows of Holstein and Jersey breeds and their crosses, reared under pasture-based conditions. A retrospective longitudinal study was carried out with information on the performance of 77,311 cows with birth and culling dates between 1990 and 2016 from 654 specialized dairy herds located in mid and high-altitude regions of Costa Rica. Cows were classified into five classes according to their age in months at first calving (≤24, 25–27, 28–30, 31–33, ≥34). A generalized linear mixed model was used to assess the effect of AFC and breed factors on milk production (first lactation, lifetime total, and per day of life), open period (first calving and lifetime total), and herd life. The mean AFC was 29.5, 29.1, and 28.0 months for Holstein, Holstein × Jersey, and Jersey, respectively. The AFC was significantly associated (p < 0.01) with all the variables evaluated. Cows with AFC ≤ 24 presented a higher (p < 0.01) milk production (total lifetime and per day of life), as well as a longer herd life, compared to cows in classes of AFC > 28 m. The reduction in AFC contributes to a significant increase in the production and reproduction efficiency of pasture-based dairy herds. This effect was consistent across the three breed groups.

Simple Summary: Compared with multiparous sows, primiparous sows have poor reproductive performance and insufficient nutritional reserves, resulting in a decreased growth performance in their offspring, which affects the efficiency of pig production. Yeast culture (YC) is rich in nutrients, and the supplementation of yeast culture in gestation and lactation diets is beneficial to improving the nutritional level of primiparous sows. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was mainly to investigate the effects of supplementing 0.5% and 0.8% yeast cultures into diets during gestation and lactation on the reproductive performance and intestinal health of primiparous sows, and the nutrient content of their colostrum and milk. The results showed that the dietary yeast cultures improved reproductive performance, improved the intestinal environment and energy metabolism, and increased the nutrient content of colostrum from primiparous sows. This study provides a theoretical basis for improving the performance of primiparous sows, and also provides a reference for the application of yeast cultures in sow production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of yeast culture (YC) on reproductive performance, gut microbiota, and milk composition in primiparous sows. A total of 60 primiparous sows were randomly assigned to the control group (CON) and YC group (0.5% YC during gestation and 0.8% YC during lactation) consisting of 30 replicates, with one sow in each. The results showed that dietary YC supplementation increased the piglet birth weight and backfat thickness at 28 d of lactation (p < 0.05). Dietary YC supplementation increased the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of gross energy and calcium during lactation, the content of acetic acid and propionic acid at 110 d of gestation, and the content of acetic acid and butyric acid at 28 d of lactation in feces (p < 0.05). Furthermore, dietary YC supplementation decreased the abundance of Firmicutes, Lachnospiraceae_XPB1014_group, and Terrisporobacter (p < 0.05), and increased the abundance of Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group (p < 0.05). Compared to the control group, dietary YC supplementation increased the fat and lactose content of the colostrum (p < 0.05). Metabolomics analysis showed that YC increased 26 different metabolites in the colostrum. Among them were mainly pantothenic acid, proline, isoleucine, phenylalanine, acylcarnitine, and other metabolites. In conclusion, these results suggested that dietary YC supplementation improves reproductive performance and gut health and increases the nutrient content in the colostrum of primiparous sows. The reproductive efficiency and productivity in bovines depend to a great extent on the absence of inflammatory processes of the uterus in the postpartum period. Cows with clinical endometritis have lower reproductive efficiency. The negative impact on reproduction is determined by a lower risk of pregnancy, due to an increase in the number of inseminations per pregnant cow, the prolongation of the calving-first insemination interval, and the prolongation of the calving-conception interval. In this first part, a review of the main diagnostic methods of clinical and subclinical endometritis will be carried out. Under field conditions, the diagnosis of clinical endometritis can be made by different methods: endometritis score, vaginal examination, metricheck, speculum, vaginoscope, rectal palpation and ultrasonography. Each with different diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. The diagnosis of subclinical endometritis by ultrasonography can be made in real time in the study of the follicular map and the characteristics of the content and artifacts in the uterus. Another possibility is to make the diagnosis based on the amount of leukocytes present in the uterine lumen, using different methods: cytobrush, cytoflushing, cytotape, Leukocyte Esterase Test and optical density. Simple Summary: Replacement heifer development is a critical component in beef production. The identification of the ideal uterine environment will greatly benefit reproductive efficiency. Additionally, the elucidation of how diet can influence this environment could alter management strategies. Therefore, our hypothesis was that different levels of protein supplementation would affect the uterine environment of beef heifers without inhibiting development or the ability to conceive. Supplemental protein did not greatly affect the uterine environment as it pertained to amino acid concentrations. However, uterine amino acid concentrations did change throughout development, and protein supplementation can influence uterine luminal fluid composition on d 14 post-insemination, which may affect conception rates. Our hypothesis was that protein supplementation would affect the uterine environment of beef heifers without inhibiting development or reproduction. To test the effects of dietary supplementation on these outcomes, a randomized complete block design with repeated measures was implemented. Angus heifers (n = 60) were blocked by body weight (BW) and randomly assigned to one of three supplemental protein treatment groups (10% (CON), 20% (P20), and 40% (P40)). Mixed model ANOVAs were used to determine whether protein supplementation treatments, time, and the interaction or protein supplementation, semen exposure, and the interaction influenced uterine luminal fluid (ULF) and pregnancy outcomes. Amino acids (AAs) were impacted (p < 0.001), specifically, the essential AAs: Arg, Iso, Leu, Val, His, Lys, Met, Phe, Trp. Protein supplementation influenced multiple AAs post-insemination: Arg (p = 0.03), CC (p = 0.05), 1-MH (p = 0.001), and Orn (p = 0.03). In conclusion, protein supplementation did not affect the reproductive development via puberty attainment or the timing of conception even with alterations in growth. We began gathering sources for this article in 2020 and began writing it as an important topic in the poultry field that provides an overview of the benefits of using herbal and bee products as nutraceuticals for improving poultry health and production, as well as encourages breeders and producers to use them instead of antibiotics for more healthy and safe products. The quality and safety attributes of poultry products have been attracting increasing attention and interest from the scientific communities as well as the public worldwide. Recently, nutraceuticals, as natural and safe alternatives to synthetic and artificial chemical drugs such as antibiotics, are used in several poultry farms (˃65%) for producing organic products (0% drugs). Nutraceuticals, such as organic acids (amino acids and fatty acids), herbal products (black cumin and fenugreek), and honeybee products (bee pollen and bee venom), are natural substances. They were added to poultry diets (1–3%) as a source of nutrition and to provide health benefits for birds. In addition, they have several biological functions in the bird's body and may help birds to enhance their well-being. These supplements can increase the body weight of broilers and the egg production of hens by approximately 7% and 10%, respectively, as well as, enhance meat and eggs quality (˃30%). Moreover, they can improve the semen quality of roosters (ejaculate volume, advanced motility, live sperms, concentrate per ejaculate) by an average of 25%. Previous literature on the main biological activities performed by nutraceuticals has shown that most studies have only focused on the concept of using nutraceuticals as growth promoters, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agents. In the current review, critical effects/functions of the use of nutraceuticals, as natural and safe alternative feed additives in poultry farms, such as antioxidants, sexual-stimulants, immuno-stimulants, and for producing healthy products were discussed. Simple Summary: Fertility is one of the most important traits for productivity in extensive beef production systems, since it has a major effect on the number of calves born and, as a result, the quantity of weaned calves produced per year. However, it is difficult to improve this trait under extensive conditions, mainly due to the lack of reliable and easy-to-obtain selection criteria. In this study, fertility was analyzed using reproductive efficiency, which was calculated as the deviation between the optimal and real parity number of females at each age. We demonstrated a high h2 value (0.30) using a classic repeatability model and a random regression model (ranging from 0.24 to 0.51), which suggests that the latter model can be recommended to improve fertility in beef breeds raised under extensive environmental conditions such as the Retinta. In addition, we performed the first GWAS analysis looking for SNP genetic markers associated with this character in cattle, which showed five markers significantly associated with the trait located on BTA4 and BTA28. Finally, the functional analysis revealed the presence of five candidate genes located within these regions, which were previously shown to be related to fertility in cattle and mice models. In this study, we analyzed the variation of reproductive efficiency, estimated as the deviation between the optimal and real parity number of females at each stage of the cow's life, in 12,554 cows belonging to the Retinta Spanish cattle breed, using classical repeatability and random regression models. The results of the analyses using repeatability model and the random regression model suggest that reproductive efficiency is not homogeneous throughout the cow's life. The h2 estimate for this model was 0.30, while for the random regression model it increased across the parities, from 0.24 at the first calving to 0.51 at calving number 9. Additionally, we performed a preliminary genome-wide association study for this trait in a population of 252 Retinta cows genotyped using the Axiom Bovine Genotyping v3 Array. The results showed 5 SNPs significantly associated with reproductive efficiency, located in two genomic regions (BTA4 and BTA28). The functional analysis revealed the presence of 5 candidate genes located within these regions, which were previously involved in different aspects related to fertility in cattle and mice models. This new information could give us a better understanding of the genetic architecture of reproductive traits in this species, as well as allow us to accurately select more fertile cows. The aim of the present study was to determine the impact of different strategies for increasing the level of serum progesterone (P4) on luteal morphology and function in bovine females. The effects of increasing P4 on pregnancy rate and gestational loss (GL) in Nelore cows subjected to timed artificial insemination (TAI) were also evaluated. A total of 939 cows were divided into three groups: P4LA (n = 305), 150 mg of long‐acting injectable P4 7 days after TAI; GnRH (n = 306), 10 μg of buserelin acetate 7 days after TAI; and control (n = 328), no hormone treatment after TAI. Doppler ultrasound assessments and P4 measurements were performed on days 7 and 16 after TAI. The pregnancy rate and GL as a function of treatment were compared using the SAS GLIMMIX procedure. Corpus luteum (CL) vascular perfusion, volume, and plasma P4 concentration were analysed using the SAS PROC MIXED procedure. No significant difference was found among the treatments in terms of volume, number of pixels, and CL intensity or in the serum P4 concentration at 7 days after ovulation. The CL blood flow at 16 days after ovulation was lower in the P4LA and GnRH groups than that in the control group (p <.01). Serum concentrations of P4 at 16 days after ovulation were higher in the P4LA and GnRH groups than those in the control group (p =.04). A difference in the pregnancy rate (p =.003) and a trend in GL (p =.07) as a function of treatment were found. Overall, long‐acting injectable P4 supplementation on day 7 after TAI or GnRH administration affected CL vascularization and increased the serum concentrations of P4 16 days after ovulation, promoting better pregnancy rates than the control. Abstract This study aims to determine the business performance of beef cattle farmers in terms of livestock production and productivity and the income of farmers from beef cattle business. The research was conducted descriptively with survey techniques through interviews and field observations. Primary data was taken by conducting interviews with farmers or those who run beef cattle business, extension workers, and stakeholders in the field of animal husbandry. The observed variables included maintenance, housing, feeding, reproductive system and BCS as well as cattle farming business analysis. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively to determine the important values (means, maximum value, minimum value and standard deviation) and presented in tabular form. The t-test was carried out to determine conclusively the existence of the change phenomenon at the beginning of raising and now (late). The results of the study show that the performance of beef cattle business in Masni District has enormous potential as indicated by an efficient livestock production system, a high reproduction system and a profitable livestock business analysis value. The results of the t test show that there is a significant increase for the population and also the price with a B/C Ratio value was 1.9. Data primer diambil dengan melakukan wawancara terhadap peternak atau yang menjalankan usaha ternak sapi potong, penyuluh, dan stake holder dibidang peternakan. Varibabel yang diamati meliputi pemeliharaan, perkandangan, pemberian pakan, sitem reproduksi, BCS (Body Condition Score) serta analisis usaha peternakan sapi. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara deskriptif untuk mengetahui nilai-nilai penting (means, nilai maksimum, nilai minimum dan standar deviasi) serta disajikan dalam bentuk tabel. Uji t dilakuan untuk mengetahui secara meyakinkan keberadaan fenomena perubahan saat awal beternak dan saat ini (akhir). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa performa usaha ternak sapi potong di Distrik Masni Kab. Manokwari memiliki potensi yang sangat besar. Hal ini ditunjukkan oleh sistem produksi ternak yang efisien, indeks reproduksi yang tinggi dan nilai analisa usaha ternak yang menguntungkan. Hasil Uji t menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan yang signifikan untuk populasi dan harga dengan nilai B/C Ratio adalah 1.9. ABSTRACT: Poor udder health status can have a detrimental effect on milk yield and reproductive performance, leading to reductions in the dairy farm profit. The objective of this retrospective longitudinal study was to assess the associations of somatic cell count (SCC) with daily milk yield and reproductive performance. A database with 1,930,376 lactations from 867 Argentinean grazing dairy herds records collected for 14 years was used. The association of the evolution of SCC (healthy vs. new case vs. cured vs. chronic; with 150,000 SCC/mL as threshold) and of the severity of SCC [mild (150,000­–400,000 SCC/mL) vs. moderate (400,000–1,000,000 SCC/mL) vs. severe (>1,000,000 SCC/mL)] with the odds for conception were estimated. Finally, the associations of the linear score of SCC (LS-SCC) with daily milk yield were estimated depending on parity and milk production quartile. The odds ratios (CI 95%) for conception at first service were 0.921 (0.902–0.941), 0.866 (0.848–0.884), and 0.842 (0.826–0.859) for the new case, cured, and chronic cows compared with healthy cows, respectively. Also, the odds ratios (CI 95%) for conception were 0.902 (0.881–0.925), 0.837 (0.808–0.866) and 0.709 (0.683–0.736) for mild, moderate and severe cases compared with healthy cows, respectively. An increase of one point of LS-SCC was associated with decreases of 0.349, 0.539, and 0.676 kg in daily milk yield for first-, second-, and third-lactation cows, respectively. In conclusion, SCC is negatively associated with the risk for conception and with daily milk yield in grazing dairy cows. This negative relationship with conception is higher when SCC increase occurs after the service date and it is influenced by severity of mastitis, and in the case of milk yield, the negative association is influenced by parity, milk production quartile, and severity of mastitis.

Simple Summary: Artificial Insemination (AI) is mainly used after estrus synchronization in buffalo, and consecutive synchronization protocols are used to enhance reproductive efficiency. In this study, two different synchronization protocols have been used: Ovsynch vs. a P4-administration, and their efficiency in primiparous animals has been evaluated in different seasons for up to four cycles of re-synchronization protocols. Results show that the pregnancy rate upon the initial AI tends to be higher in P4 treated buffaloes, and that AI efficiency after re-synchronization through P4 is higher than the Ovsynch protocol. In conclusion, synchronization treatments must be selected according to the season of the year. The results derived from this study could be useful for buffalo breeders who want to improve the reproductive efficiency in primiparous animals in commercially managed buffalo herds. Primiparous buffaloes were tested in two periods of the year characterized, by either low or high reproductive efficiency. They were subjected to two protocols for synchronization of ovulation: (i) Ovsynch (OV) and (ii) progesterone based (P4) treatment. After calving, the animals underwent a series of four cycles of re-synchronization protocols. The season did not affect pregnancy rates when the results of the two treatments were pooled together with regard to the first synchronization protocol, followed by AI. Pregnancy rates were similar during the low breeding season (50.3% vs. 57.4% in OV and P4, respectively), but different during the high breeding season (50.4% vs. 67.7% in OV and P4, respectively; p = 0.000). Logistic regression confirmed a significant effect of treatment and season interaction on pregnancy (p = 0.003). Following re-synchronization, a treatment by season interaction was detected during the low breeding season (odds ratio = 2.233), in favor of P4. Finally, a survival analysis showed a better response of animals subjected to P4 treatment from the second AI onward. In conclusion, the pooled data of pregnancy rates from both treatments between seasons are not different following AIs. Better results, though, were obtained from the implementation of P4 treatment, and are recorded in a season-fashioned mode when the comparison is made following first or cumulative AIs. There are few studies that effectively quantify the economic losses resulting from problems caused by leptospirosis in naturally infected dairy cattle. Given this gap, the objective of this study was to propose and apply a method to quantify the economic losses resulting from productive and reproductive problems in a commercial dairy herd naturally infected by Leptospira spp. For this study, the zootechnical and economic indicators at a property with Jersey cattle were analyzed during the period from 2014 to 2017. The leptospirosis outbreak occurred in 2014, and the therapeutic approach was carried out between 2015 and 2017, with the latter considered the year of control of the outbreak. The adopted integrated control strategy consisted of dividing the herd according to the serological results obtained through the microscopic agglutination test, the treatment of reagents with streptomycin, and vaccination against leptospirosis of non-reagent heifers and cows. The method used to evaluate the economic indicators of the property was the calculation of the gross margin by taking into account the implicit and explicit cost parameters associated with the manifestation of leptospirosis. The prevalence rate of leptospirosis decreased from 49.4 % in 2015 to 21.6 % in 2017. There was a reduction in the abortion rate (from 40.00 % in 2014 to 9.00 % in 2017), in the stillborn rate (from 2.63 % in 2014 to 1.69 % in 2017) and an increase in the calving rate (from 65.00 % in 2014 to 86.00 % in 2017). In addition, there were increases in the number of lactating cows (from 38 in 2014–57 in 2017) and the mean times of lactation duration, which increased from 275 days in 2014–295 days in 2017. As a result, the average annual production of milk increased from 164,655 liters in 2014–248,521 liters in 2017. In 2014, when treatment hadn't yet started, the gross margin per liter of milk sold, considering implicit and explicit costs, was US$0.00. In 2015 and 2016, US$0.27 and US$0.30 were obtained, respectively, for this variable. In 2017, with the disease under control on the property, the gross margin per liter of milk reached US$0.36. The gross margin per liter of milk sold was higher in the period when the disease was controlled, showing losses of up to 84 % of the gross margin during the outbreak. Immediate treatment of positive cows and preventive measures had a significant impact on improving the productive and economic efficiency of the property. • Leptospirosis reduced animals' performance and increased the occurrence of abortions. • Immediate therapeutic strategy significantly increased the property's gross margin. • Leptospirosis was responsible for a loss of up to 84 % of the annual gross margin. • The control of the leptospirosis outbreak improved economic indicators. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of yeast culture (YC) on reproductive performance, gut microbiota, and milk composition in primiparous sows. A total of 60 primiparous sows were randomly assigned to the control group (CON) and YC group (0.5% YC during gestation and 0.8% YC during lactation) consisting of 30 replicates, with one sow in each. The results showed that dietary YC supplementation increased the piglet birth weight and backfat thickness at 28 d of lactation (p < 0.05). Dietary YC supplementation increased the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of gross energy and calcium during lactation, the content of acetic acid and propionic acid at 110 d of gestation, and the content of acetic acid and butyric acid at 28 d of lactation in feces (p < 0.05). Furthermore, dietary YC supplementation decreased the abundance of Firmicutes, Lachnospiraceae_XPB1014_group, and Terrisporobacter (p < 0.05), and increased the abundance of Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group (p < 0.05). Compared to the control group, dietary YC supplementation increased the fat and lactose content of the colostrum (p < 0.05). Metabolomics analysis showed that YC increased 26 different metabolites in the colostrum. Among them were mainly pantothenic acid, proline, isoleucine, phenylalanine, acylcarnitine, and other metabolites. In conclusion, these results suggested that dietary YC supplementation improves reproductive performance and gut health and increases the nutrient content in the colostrum of primiparous sows.

In vitro embryo production (IVEP) is used to develop high-quality genetics associated with intergenerational genetic gain. It is characterized by acquisition (in vivo or post-mortem) and maturation (MIV) of oocytes from donors, followed by fertilization (FIV) of matured oocytes and culture (IVC) of embryos, which are then sent to transferred or cryopreserved. Even with extensive knowledge on IVEP, some biochemical and hormonal regulations that involve embryonic development are still unknown, leading to a low overall efficiency of the biotechnological process. Although in vitro developed embryos have a lower quality than that produced in vivo, in terms of resistance to challenging events, IVEP presents itself as a potential biotechnology. In cattle breeding, reproductive biotechnologies are key to increase and improve the genetic improvement of the herd, associated with productive and reproductive efficiency. In this article, the steps and strategies of IVEP and its contribution to reproduction in the cattle sector are discussed.

Simple Summary: CircRNA transcriptome sequencing technology is widely used in the study of germ-line stem cell proliferation and differentiation and early embryonic development, but the research on early pregnancy diagnosis in female animals is still in the preliminary stage, and the specific regulatory mechanism has not been reported. Here, we identified numerous differentially expressed circRNAs (DECs) in the venous blood of the distinctive local breed of Chinese Jianghuai buffalo. Analysis of the enrichment showed that DECs were mainly enriched in the epidermal growth factor receptor-signaling pathway that is important for embryonic development and pregnancy maintenance. These findings have provided a better understanding of buffalo pregnancy establishment and a potential basis for improving early pregnancy diagnosis techniques in buffalo. Circular RNA (circRNA) is expressed in cells and tissues of several species. However, the expression of circRNAs in the blood of Jianghuai buffaloes during early pregnancy has not been reported. In this study, we identified the DECs in the blood of Jianghuai buffaloes and annotated the functions of these DECs. The results showed that there were 890 DECs between the pregnant and non-pregnant groups, of which more than 80% were exon-derived circRNAs, including 323 up-regulated circRNAs and 567 down-regulated circRNAs. Enrichment analysis revealed that DECs were mainly enriched in the epidermal growth factor receptor-signaling pathway important for embryonic development and pregnancy maintenance. In addition, most DECs have multiple miRNA targets, suggesting that these DECs have the potential to function as miRNA sponges. In conclusion, several DECs are present between pregnant and non-pregnant Jianghuai buffaloes, and these DECs are associated with embryo implantation and pregnancy establishment. Reproductive efficiency of a heifer is directly dependent on the health of reproductive system especially ovary and uterus. Current experiment was carried out to screen candidate genes related to reproductive traits and detect molecular mechanisms of DEGs by using RNA-sequencing (RNAseq) and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) to understand the environmental adaptability, molecular breeding and analyze the reproductive performance. Furthermore, Illumina II high throughput sequncing technology was utilized in the current experiment to sequence transcriptomes and analysis related to pathway of different genes between uterus and ovary in Xiangxi cattle. The total number of ovary assembled was compared to the reference genome sequence, DEGs analysis, GO and KEGG enrichment analysis and candidate gene screening were performed. Based on the transcriptome data, seven cDNA libraries were constructed by utilizing total RNA. Out of seven contracted cDNA libraries, in every sequencing library, raw reads reached >133 Mb, and >94% clean reads remained. After comparing the Xiangxi cattle ovaries with the uterus, a total of 3635 mRNAs were found, in which 1608 were significantly up-regulated expressed and 2027 were down-regulated expression mRNAs. The mRNA expression of ADCY3, ADCY4, ADCY9, FSHR, BMP15, LHCGR, INSR, CYP11A1, CYP17A1, CYP19A1, STAR and SCARB1 in ovary of Xiangxi Cattle were significant different in ovarian and uterus tissues. Through GSEA and PPI network, we found the ovarian steroidogenesis pathway played significant role in signal regulation during the development of the ovarian tissue of the Xiangxi cattle. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of calving to timed artificial insemination (C‐TAI) interval on fertility of Bos taurus and Bos indicus cows and to determine the best C‐TAI interval to include postpartum cows in TAI programs in each genotype (B. taurus and B. indicus). In experiment 1, a retrospective study was performed, with data from 2,709 TAI in Bos taurus and Bos indicus cows with different C‐TAI intervals. There was a positive linear effect of C‐TAI interval on the pregnancy probability (p <.0001). However, there was no effect or interaction with the genotype. When C‐TAI intervals were grouped in classes, pregnancy rate differed in groups (p <.05). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed, and it was observed that 52 days would be the better C‐TAI interval to maximize fertility in beef cows. According to the previous result, we further stratified into two C‐TAI interval groups (≤ 52 days or > 52 days). Cows with C‐TAI longer than 52 days (C‐TAI > 52) had greater pregnancy rate (56%) than cows with short C‐TAI (46%; p <.01). In experiment 2, 18 postpartum beef cows were subjected to TAI protocol at different C‐TAI intervals (n = 6 cows per group): 40, 60 or 80 days postpartum. Cows with 60 days of C‐TAI had a greater preovulatory follicle diameter than cows with 80 days postpartum (p <.05). The C‐TAI interval did not affect (p >.05) the ovulation rate nor the proportion of endometrial polymorphonuclear leucocytes. We conclude that C‐TAI interval affects pregnancy rate in both Bos taurus and Bos indicus. Maximum plant height (Hmax), stem tissue mass density (SD), leaf mass per area (LMA), and relative growth rate (RGR) have all been linked to flowering phenology. However, it is still unknown whether these functional traits varying with flowering phenology are related to other floral traits associated with pollinator preference and reproductive success. We investigated the relationship between vegetative and floral traits, as well as the rates of insect visitation and seed set of five Gentiana species in eastern Tibetan meadows. Our results showed that flowering onset and flowering offset time were all found to be positively correlated with the Hmax, SD, and LMA, but negatively correlated with the RGR. Flowering onset time was positively correlated with corolla diameter and pollen grain number, whereas was negatively correlated with flower number and flower longevity. The rates of insect visitation were positively related to flowering onset time, pollen grain number, corolla diameter, and seed set, but negatively related to flower number and longevity. Early flowering species have higher RGR but lower SD, LMA and Hmax, as well as smaller flowers, fewer pollen grains, longer flower longevity, and lower insect visitation rates than late-flowering plant species. Our findings indicate that floral traits are related to vegetative traits in Gentiana species. Also these plant trait relationships were associated with pollinator preference, and plant reproductive success of eastern Tibetan meadows. We speculate that these traits relationships are likely adaptive in unpredictable and often pollinator-limited environments in the Tibet alpine meadows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Reproductive biotechnologies are important strategies to enforce the production of genetically superior animals. The fixed-time artificial insemination is widely used in Brazil and it is especially important in farms located in remote areas, contributing to a better management and increase in genetics and productivity in areas such the Lower Amazon. We evaluated two different protocols of fixed-time insemination using two different hormones in the Nellore heifer raised under tropical conditions. The protocol of the fixed-time artificial insemination using equine chorionic gonadotrophin presented a better outcome in the pregnancy rate compared to the protocol using follicle stimulating hormone. Our tested protocol may be the most suitable alternative to increase conception rates in animals that are raised in an extensive system under tropical conditions in the Amazon. This study aimed to evaluate follicular dynamics and pregnancy rates in Nellore heifers submitted to fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) protocols associated with equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) or follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Nellore heifers (n = 259) were used, divided into two studies. Experiment I evaluated the ovarian follicular dynamics in 64 Nellore heifers submitted to different FTAI protocols (n = 32/group) using either FSH or eCG. In Experiment II, the pregnancy rate was evaluated in 195 heifers submitted to FTAI protocols and divided into two groups: FSH (n = 97) and eCG (n = 98). In Experiment I, the ultrasound examination showed that the maximum diameter of the dominant and preovulatory follicles and the ovulation time were similar between the FSH and eCG groups (p > 0.05). However, the ovulation rate was higher in the eCG group when compared to FSH (p = 0.014). In Experiment II, females that received eCG presented a higher pregnancy rate (58.1%) when compared to FSH (40.2%) (p = 0.012). The use of eCG in the FTAI protocol in Nellore heifers promoted a higher ovulation rate and increased pregnancy rate and may be the most suitable alternative to increase conception rates in animals that are raised in an extensive system under tropical conditions in the Amazon. The aim was to evaluate the efficiency of two different ultrasonographic systems, Doppler mode vs. Two-dimensional mode (B mode), to identify the pregnancy status of beef cows and heifers on day 21 (D21) after Timed Artificial Insemination (TAI). The experiment was performed on a commercial beef farm in central-west region of Brazil using 1895 Nelore heifers and cows. All females had ovulation synchronized for a TAI that was performed on D0. Twenty-one days after the TAI, all animals had their ovaries evaluated by ultrasound for pregnancy diagnosis based on the size of the corpus luteum (CL). Using B mode ultrasonography, females without a CL or with a CL ≤ 10 mm in diameter were considered nonpregnant, whereas females with a CL > 10 mm in diameter were considered potentially pregnant. After the B mode examination, the Doppler mode was turned on, and the CL was evaluated by the subjective percentage of blood perfusion in the total area of the CL. Using Doppler mode, females were considered nonpregnant if they had no CL or the CL had ≤25 % of the total area with detectable blood perfusion, whereas animals with >25 % blood perfusion in the CL were considered potentially pregnant. The results for each method (potentially pregnant or nonpregnant) were later compared with the gold standard technique, which was a pregnancy diagnosis on D33 after TAI using ultrasound with visualization of an embryonic heartbeat. The accuracy was determined using the 2 × 2 contingency table approach. The area under the curve using the receiver operating characteristic curve for Doppler mode and B mode were 0.929 and 0.902 (P < 0.01), respectively. There were almost no false negatives (designated non-pregnant but later pregnant at D33) with either technique (0.2 % vs. 0.3 %; P = 0.65 for Doppler mode vs. B mode, respectively). False positives (designated pregnant but non-pregnant on D33) were greater for B mode compared to Doppler (19.1 % vs. 14.0 %; P < 0.01). This resulted in Doppler mode having similar high values as B mode for Negative Predictive Value (99.9 vs. 99.6 %; P = 0.85) and Sensitivity (99.8 vs. 99.7 %; P = 0.86) but there were differences in Specificity (86 vs. 80.9 %; P < 0.01), Positive Predictive Value (88 vs. 84.3 %; P < 0.01), and Accuracy (93.0 vs. 90.4 %; P < 0.01). In conclusion, evaluation of CL blood perfusion by Doppler produced greater accuracy in the early identification of nonpregnant heifers and cows on D21 after TAI than measurement of CL diameter with B mode ultrasound; although both had over 90 % accuracy in identifying pregnant and nonpregnant females., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
