COVID-19 pandemic , *GROSS domestic product , *VENTURE capital - Abstract
In a hyper-competition era with the shadows by COVID-19 pandemic, nations as well as companies are competing for talents, high-technologies and innovations to sustain the economic performance and competitiveness. This study compares the NIC of two small economies, Lithuania and Taiwan, that both perform better than most countries during the pandemic, aiming to understand their next steps to sustain the successfulness after the pandemic. The study utilized the ELSS (Edvinsson, Lin, Stahle and Stahle) model (Stahle et al., 2015) with 48 indicators collected from the World Competitiveness Yearbook to measure the degree of NIC. Based on 20 years (2001-2020) national intellectual capital (NIC) panel data, the descriptive analysis reveals that Lithuania lags behind Taiwan renewal capital. However, Lithuania's market capital and process capital have great improvement over the past 20 years and are catching up with those of Taiwan. The renewal capital mainly consists of R&D spending/GDP, business R&D spending, cooperation between corporations and universities, venture capital, entrepreneurship, development and application of technology and 6 other renewal relevant indicators. From the perspective of NIC, the gap of GDP per capita between Lithuania and Taiwan corresponds to the difference of renewal capital between these two countries. The results show the significance of renewal capital. Those who are unable to attract, retain talents and slow in technology renewal will not be competitive and sustainable. We suggest that Lithuania utilize its short-term NIC to boost up economic development, then invest more in talent development and technology advancement to ensure its sustainability. Organizational ability to create and successfully manage knowledge, in its different forms, has become the basis of superior organizational performance and sustainable competitiveness. Nowadays, especially in developed economies, the importance of knowledge and intangible resources, i.e., intellectual capital, is rapidly increasing. The intangibles have a dominant role and gradually are replacing physical resources as the most important production factors of organizational success. Many studies gave significant findings in the field of intellectual capital measurement and its conceptualization, but there still is not a worldwide consensus on the dimensions of intellectual capital. Previous research focused mainly on traditional intellectual capital dimensions—human, relational, and structural capital—neglecting organizational renewal capability as a dimension of intellectual capital. There are no systematic findings on whether there are interrelationships of traditional intellectual capital dimensions in transition economies. This paper addresses and empirically tests the complementary role of traditional intellectual capital dimensions in organizational renewal, in the context of a transition economy. Primary data were collected using previously psychometrically validated questionnaires from 224 organizations in the Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS‐SEM) was used to test hypothesized relationships. Research findings suggest that renewal capital has a significant role. Furthermore, it demonstrates the intensity of relational and structural capital connection with knowledge renewal, highlighting the significance of different forms of knowledge in organizational renewal. Managers can find some useful directions to efficiently manage intellectual capital and to be aware of the presence of knowledge resource interrelationships and their importance for organizational renewal.

The aim of the work is to analyse the relationship between entrepreneurial capital (EC), renewal capital (RC) and trust capital (TC), considered as standalone components of intellectual capital (IC), and firms’ performances. To this end, an empirical research based on a sample of Italian companies was carried out. The survey’s results show that EC, RC and TC have a positive influence on Italian medium-sized and large companies’ performance. Its findings contribute to understand how EC, RC and TC affect the creation of value in organisations and enable these organisations to improve their performance through a better management of knowledge-based resources.

- Abstract
According to past research, intellectual capital (IC) is a key driver of innovation performance and subsequent competitive advantage. Given the human nature of innovation activities (i.e. human beings produce innovations), human capital (HC) deserves special attention. Although researchers in the past have analysed the HC-innovation linkage, we still do not have a detailed understanding of how specific human capabilities affect innovation. Furthermore, the technology level of the firm could generate major differences in the HC-innovation relationship as it influences both the type of knowledge prevalent within the company and the radicalness of the innovations developed. Nevertheless, former literature has largely omitted technology level when studying the IC-innovation linkage. To fill this research gap, this study examines the role of human attributes, including knowledge, skills and motivation (i.e. traditional HC), learning capability (i.e. renewal capital) and entrepreneurial attitude (i.e. entrepreneurial capital) on innovation in high-tech versus low-tech companies. To that end, survey data from 180 Spanish companies were analysed by means of structural equation modelling based on partial least squares. The results obtained confirm that the influence of HC, renewal capital and entrepreneurial capital on innovation differs depending on the technology level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the paper is to analyse the renewal capital in the EU countries, following the framework proposed by Lin and Edvinsson, and to analyse its relationship with entrepreneurial activity. The EU countries strongly differ in the level of renewal capital. The results of the correlation analysis show that the renewal capital index is positively correlated with perceived opportunities and improvement-driven entrepreneurial activity in the EU countries. However, there was no significant correlation between the renewal capital index and new products that are offered in the market by the early-stage entrepreneurs. The results confirm that the European Union countries have problems in transferring renewal capital into new business activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intellectual capital (IC) is a concept aimed at distinguishing the overall value of intangible resources of the focal firm. From innovation management point of view, the key focus is on how IC relates to firm-level innovation performance. In this study, we examine this issue with a large sample survey data, utilizing a measurement model that tests the impact of different configurations of IC dimensions, i.e. IC profiles, on incremental and radical innovation performance. The results of cluster analysis highlight four different IC profiles. Based on clustering, we find IC superstars profile, which indicates that high overall amount of IC increases the level of incremental and radical innovations. Also, we find that IC profile characterized with high quality employees and an atmosphere of trust is likely to increase incremental and radical innovations, and a profile low in renewal capability and entrepreneurial capital is likely to struggle in terms of incremental innovations. The article comprises analysis of theoretical and practical aspects of measurement of the city's intellectual capital. This article includes analysis of the intellectual capital concept and possibilities of its application at the city level, generalization of the organization intellectual capital models and principles, which, considering the macro-level context and overview of tendencies of economic growth, are applied for measurement of intellectual capital of the city. The newly created city's intellectual capital balance index is presented. The empirical application of the method proved that it is an appropriate tool for the measurement of the city's intellectual capital within a country, which corresponds to the second level NUTS of the European Union. This article is one of the ambitions to promote the methodological background for urban governance and improvement of intellectual capital as well as competitiveness of Lithuanian cities. The city's intellectual capital balance index can be used as the tool for assessment of efficiency and timeliness of the urban and national development strategies, also as the tool for publicity for innovation, creativity and “smartness” of the city or the whole country.

WOS: 000440670700010, The purpose of this study is to design a model about an intellectual capital measurement at district levels. In this study, a comprehensive literature search was conducted to determine the indicators based on the intellectual capital components proposed by Edvinsson and Malone (1997), and 200 indicators were identified under 5 components. The set of indicators prepared has been reduced to the level of the districts based on author evaluations and expert opinions. Eventually the intellectual capital district index model consisting of 41 variable indicator is achieved. The intellectual capital levels of the 37 provinces including Konya and Karaman were determined, including subcomponents and the intellectual capital map of Konya and Karaman illiterates defined as TR52 level II regions is obtained. No research has been found in the literature that focuses on the application of intellectual capital at the district level. In this direction, it is expected that our research will provide important contributions in the literature.

In most studies IC (Intellectual Capital) has been seen to consist of three elements: human capital, structural capital and relational capital. However, emerging studies suggest that that three other elements could also be included in IC visualizing and mapping: renewal capital (RC), trust capital (TC), and entrepreneurial capital (EC). The purpose of this paper is to show preliminary results from the Italian research unit of an international project on IC and value creation. We focused on EC and RC, in order to verify if they affect firm performances. Descriptive analysis techniques were applied. We utilized multi-item scales as the key constructs to operationalise entrepreneurial capital and renewal capital. Statistical analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between EBITDA and EC. Moreover, statistical data also confirm the existence of a positive influence of RC and EC levels on ROI and a positive relationship between ROA and RC.

Traditionally, intellectual capital (IC) is seen as consisting of three components: human, structural and relational capital. Nevertheless, an emerging body of literature has started to suggest that three other components also form part of IC. These are renewal capital (RC), trust capital (TC) and entrepreneurial capital (EC). This paper shows preliminary results from the Italian unit of an international project on intellectual capital and value creation. The article focuses particularly on EC and RC, to ascertain their influence on the performance of firms using descriptive analysis techniques. Multi-item scales are used as key tools to achieve the research goals. Our analysis reveals a markedly positive relationship between EBITDA and EC. RC and EC levels positively influence ROI. Finally, RC is linked to positive effects on ROA.

The aim of the paper is to analyse the trends in the EU-15’s national intellectual capital between 1995 and 2011, following the framework proposed by Lin and Edvinsson. The presented components of national intellectual capital include human capital, process capital, market capital and renewal capital. For this assessment, sigma-convergence was selected. The results show that the EU-15 have high levels of human capital. However, they stagnate when it comes to process capital and market capital. The greatest dispersion among EU-15 countries can be seen with regard to their renewal capital.
