A total of 16, 18-weeks old chickens with mean weight 1.99±0.12 kg (1.85-2.30kg) were used to compare the serum biochemical characteristics of four chicken genotypes (breeds/strains) from south-eastern part of Nigeria. The chickens were grouped based on their genotypes (breeds/strain) in a Completely Randomized Design for the four-week study. The genotypes (breeds) considered were Black Australorp (BA), Isa Brown (IB), Noiler (NOI) and Local chicken (LC) at 4 chickens per genotype. At the end of the experiment, four (4) birds per genotype were drawn and their blood samples analysed for serum biochemical studies. The mean total cholesterol (TC), triaceylglycerol (TAG) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) concentrations of local chicken (LC) were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than the Isa brown (IB) values. Similarly, the mean blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentrations of LC was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than the Noiler value. The mean high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) of black Australorp (BA) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than the value of Noiler but showed no significant (p > 0.05) difference when compared to the values of IB and LC. There were however no significant (p > 0.05) variations in the mean low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin and creatinine concentrations among all the breeds investigated. In conclusion, the results obtained in this study will be helpful in creating a baseline data on biochemical profiles of indigenous and exotic chicken breeds in Nigeria which in turn can be used for assessing the health status of these birds, improving desirable breeds/traits and designing appropriate breeding strategies for indigenous poultry birds in the country. Intermittent fasting (IF) has garnered attention for its potential to promote health and combat chronic diseases. This study focused on the effects of Ramadan fasting, a form of IF observed by Muslims, on renal and liver function markers, anthropometric measurements, and dietary intake in healthy overweight and obese men. The study involved 60 participants from Hargeisa, Somaliland, with an average age of 40.01 ± 7.99 years. Results revealed significant reductions in body weight (P ≤ 0.001), waist circumference (P ≤ 0.001), and body mass index (P ≤ 0.001) after Ramadan fasting. Urea levels decreased significantly (P = 0.003), and though creatinine levels showed a non-significant decrease, uric acid levels increased significantly within the normal range (P ≤ 0.001). Serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) levels decreased significantly (P ≤ 0.001), while glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels remained stable. Dietary analysis indicated a significant decrease in total carbohydrates (P = 0.023), proteins (P = 0.006), and dietary cholesterol intake (P ≤ 0.001). These findings suggest that Ramadan fasting positively impacts anthropometric and renal-liver function markers in healthy overweight and obese men. The study contributes to the expanding understanding of intermittent fasting's potential health benefits, emphasizing the importance of considering Ramadan fasting as a preventive approach for metabolic disorders. Further research should explore long-term effects, mechanistic insights, and personalized clinical applications, while public health initiatives could educate individuals about safe and informed fasting practices.

The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) continues to rise globally, paralleled by an increase in associated morbidity and mortality, as well as significant implications for patient quality of life and national economies. Chronic kidney disease often progresses unrecognized by patients and physicians, despite diagnosis relying on two simple laboratory measures: estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine analysis. GFR measurement has been grounded in renal physiology, specifically the concept of clearance, with creatinine identified as a suitable endogenous marker for estimating creatinine clearance (CrCl). On this foundation, various equations have been developed to calculate CrCl or estimated GFR (eGFR) using four variables that incorporate creatinine and certain demographic information, such as sex and age. However, creatinine measurement requires standardization to minimize assay variability across laboratories. Moreover, the accuracy of these equations remains contentious in certain patient subgroups. For these reasons, additional mathematical models have been devised to enhance CrCl estimation, for example, when urine collection is impractical, in elderly or debilitated patients, and in individuals with trauma, diabetes, or obesity. Presently, eGFR in adults can be immediately measured and reported using creatinine-based equations traceable through isotope dilution mass spectrometry. Background: The present study was performed to investigate and compare renal functions of single-kidney patients after 12 h of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) surgery through assessing major markers of renal function with focus on serum level of cystatin that performs a consistent accuracy in various conditions. Materials and Methods: This pilot quasi-experimental study was done on 92 patients with single kidney having staghorn calculus who had undergone PCNL and were referred to the Al-Zahra Hospital, Isfahan, Iran, during 2019–2021. Serum levels of cystatin C, creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) urine level were evaluated before and 12 h after surgery. Results: The mean cystatin C decreased significantly 1.58 ± 0.55 versus mg/L 1.46 ± 0.52 after 12 h after surgery (P < 0.001). Furthermore, the mean levels of creatinine (2.04 ± 0.71 vs. 1.89 ± 0.60 mg/dL) and NGAL (39.72 ± 12.87 vs. 24.05 ± 10.89 μg/ml) were decreased significantly after 12 h of procedure (P < 0.05) while the mean eGFR (57.62 ± 27.59 vs. 64.68 ± 31.88 ml/min/1.73 m2) was increased significantly after 12 h (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Due to significant improvement in all markers of renal after PCNL, this procedure can be considered a potentially effective and safe approach for treating large stone in single-kidney patients.

Purpose: We have investigated the association between markers of renal function [serum urea nitrogen, creatinine, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)] and age and lipid profile in an Iranian population sample of 4,567 subjects. Materials/methods: Serum creatinine and urea nitrogen, together with anthropometric parameters and lipid profile were determined in all the subjects. eGFR was calculated using the modification of diet in renal disease formula. Results: Serum creatinine and urea nitrogen increased with age (p <.05), and this relationship was also more pronounced in men compared to women. Increased levels of these renal function markers were significantly associated with altered lipid profiles. Antiphospholipid (aPL) antibodies are often detected in systemic autoimmune diseases. The aim of the study was to examine the correlation between the presence of aPL and certain markers of renal function in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Fifty patients (pts) with SSc were examined for the presence of antibodies to cardiolipin (aCL) and to anti-beta 2 glycoprotein I (a-B2GPI) in immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG class. Moreover, serum levels of creatinine, cystatin C, and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were determined in all patients. In all studied pts together, three multiple-regression analyses were performed with one set cystatin C as a dependent variable, in the second GFR according to the Cockcroft–Gault formula and in the third creatinine clearance by Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) formula. As independent variables, aPL of either type were inserted in addition to disease duration and age. IgG aCL was significantly positively associated with serum cystatin C ( p = 0.002), significantly negatively associated with creatinine clearance according to the Cockcroft–Gault and MDRD formula ( p = 0.01 and 0.02, respectively). IgG a-B2GPI was significantly negatively associated with creatinine clearance according to the Cockcroft–Gault ( p = 0.03) and MDRD ( p = 0.01) formula. IgM aCL and IgM a-B2GPI were not associated with any markers of the renal function. Our study suggests the relationship between kidney involvement and the positivity for some aPL in patients with SSc. Positivity for IgG aCL and IgG a-B2GPI in patients with SSc without secondary antiphospholipid syndrome seems to be connected with decrease of glomerular filtration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Various studies have reported cystatin C as an easily and rapidly assessable marker that can be used for accurate information on renal function impairment. Background: Recipient delayed graft function, which is defined as dialysis in the first week after transplantation, is one of the most common early complications after kidney transplantation. This study aimed to evaluate the daily changes in renal function-related biomarkers in the first week post-transplant., Methods: A total of 72 kidney transplant recipients were retrospectively included in this study. Clinical and laboratory data were collected daily during the first week post-transplant, including urinary concentrations of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), serum concentrations of NGAL, creatinine, urea nitrogen, uric acid (UA), β2-microglobulin, cystatin C, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)., Results: There were no significant differences in urea nitrogen (P = .375), UA (P = .090), and cystatin C (P = .691), while urinary NGAL (P < .0001), serum NGAL (P < .0001), creatinine (P < .0001), β2-microglobulin (P < .0001), and eGFR (P < .0001) were statistically significant in the first week post-transplant. In comparison with serum NGAL (P < .0001), creatinine (P < .0001), β2-microglobulin (P = .001), and eGFR (P = .001), the change ratios of urinary NGAL changed the most between day 1 and day 2 after renal transplantation, while the changing degree of urinary NGAL showed no significant difference compared with these indicators between day 1 and day 7 after kidney transplantation., Conclusion: Urinary NGAL is a sensitive marker for indicating renal function. Urinary NGAL combined with other markers can be more helpful for evaluating renal function in the first week following kidney transplantation., (© 2020 The Authors.
