Northern Slopes of Tianshan Mountain (NSTM) in Xinjiang hold significance as a principal agricultural hub within the region's arid zone. Accurate crop mapping across vast agricultural expanses is fundamental for intelligent crop monitoring and devising sustainable agricultural strategies. Previous studies on multi-temporal crop classification have predominantly focused on single-point pixel temporal features, often neglecting spatial data. In large-scale crop classification tasks, by using spatial information around the pixel, the contextual relationships of the crop can be obtained to reduce possible noise interference. This research introduces a multi-scale, multi-temporal classification framework centered on ConvGRU (convolutional gated recurrent unit). By leveraging the attention mechanism of the Strip Pooling Module (SPM), a multi-scale spatial feature extraction module has been designed. This module accentuates vital spatial and spectral features, enhancing the clarity of crop edges and reducing misclassifications. The temporal information fusion module integration features from various periods to bolster classification precision. Using Sentinel-2 imagery spanning May to October 2022, datasets for cotton, corn, and winter wheat of the NSTM were generated for the framework's training and validation. The results demonstrate an impressive 93.03% accuracy for 10 m resolution crop mapping using 15-day interval, 12-band Sentinel-2 data for the three crops. This method outperforms other mainstream methods like Random Forest (RF), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Transformer, and Temporal Convolutional Neural Network (TempCNN), showcasing a kappa coefficient of 0.9062, 7.52% and 2.42% improvement in Overall Accuracy compared to RF and LSTM, respectively, which demonstrate the potential of our model for large-scale crop classification tasks to enable high-resolution crop mapping on the NSTM. The decrease in water resources due to climate change is expected to have a significant impact on agriculture. On the other hand, as the world population increases so does the demand for food. It is necessary to better manage environmental resources and maintain an adequate level of crop production in a world where the population is constantly increasing. Therefore, agricultural activities must be closely monitored, especially in maize fields since maize is of great importance to both humans and animals. Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Sentinel-2 optical satellite images were used to monitor maize growth in this study. Backscatter and interferometric coherence values derived from Sentinel-1 images, as well as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and values related to biophysical variables (such as Leaf Area Index (LAI), Fraction of Vegetation Cover (fCover or FVC), and Canopy Water Content (CW)) derived from Sentinel-2 images were investigated. Sentinel-1 images were also used to calculate plant heights. The Interferometric SAR (InSAR) technique was applied to calculate interferometric coherence values and plant heights. For the plant height calculation, two image pairs with the largest possible perpendicular baseline were selected. Backscatter, NDVI, LAI, fCover, and CW values were low before planting, while the interferometric coherence values were generally high. Backscatter, NDVI, LAI, fCover, and CW values increased as the maize grew, while the interferometric coherence values decreased. Among all Sentinel-derived values, fCover had the best correlation with maize height until maize height exceeded 260 cm (R2 = 0.97). After harvest, a decrease in backscatter, NDVI, LAI, fCover, and CW values and an increase in interferometric coherence values were observed. NDVI, LAI, fCover, and CW values remained insensitive to tillage practices, whereas backscatter and interferometric coherence values were found to be sensitive to planting operations. In addition, backscatter values were also sensitive to irrigation operations, even when the average maize height was about 235 cm. Cloud cover and/or fog near the study area were found to affect NDVI, LAI, fCover, and CW values, while precipitation events had a significant impact on backscatter and interferometric coherence values. Color segmentation is one of the most thoroughly studied problems in agricultural applications of remote image capture systems, since it is the key step in several different tasks, such as crop harvesting, site specific spraying, and targeted disease control under natural light. This paper studies and compares five methods to segment plum fruit images under ambient conditions at 12 different light intensities, and an ensemble method combining them. In these methods, several color features in different color spaces are first extracted for each pixel, and then the most effective features are selected using a hybrid approach of artificial neural networks and the cultural algorithm (ANN-CA). The features selected among the 38 defined channels were the b* channel of L*a*b*, and the color purity index, C*, from L*C*h. Next, fruit/background segmentation is performed using five classifiers: artificial neural network-imperialist competitive algorithm (ANN-ICA); hybrid artificial neural network-harmony search (ANN-HS); support vector machines (SVM); k nearest neighbors (kNN); and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). In the ensemble method, the final class for each pixel is determined using the majority voting method. The experiments showed that the correct classification rate for the majority voting method excluding LDA was 98.59%, outperforming the results of the constituent methods.

Chlorophyll fluorescence is directly linked to the photosynthetic efficiency of plants. As satellite-based remote sensing has been shown to have the potential to derive global information about fluorescence it has become subject of various recently published studies stimulating an upsurge in this research field. This manuscript presents a simple and fast retrieval method for solar induced terrestrial plant fluorescence (SIF) which relies on only a few prerequisites. The spaced based remote sensing spectrometers used in this work typically exhibit an additive spectral feature, which is not fluorescence. This is often accompanying the actual SIF retrieval and can significantly deteriorate the results. To account for this effect a correction method has been developed and is combined with the retrieval. The method has been applied to ten years of SCIAMACHY data with promising results. The retrieved SIF values are lying between 0 and 4 mW [m-²,sr-¹,nm-¹]. However, most of the retrieved values are not exceeding 1.5 [m-²,sr-¹,nm-¹], agreeing with previous studies on the subject. Results have been retrieved for SCIAMACHY spatial resolution of 240 x 30 km² and gridded to 80 arc minutes. A clear seasonal variation could be shown utilizing 10 years of SCIAMACHY data (2002-2012). In absence of large area ground based validation data a final judgment of the results presented is notfeasible. However, a direct comparison to data of others was showing similar results for most areas.
