Abstract The dynamics of adult and regenerative tree species components was assessed in a cloud forest in the South Plateau of Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, seeking a better understanding of the process of vegetation development. To this end, permanent sampling plots were allocated, where the adult and regenerative components were characterized, respectively, in 2011 and 2013. All surveyed species were classified according to regeneration guilds into pioneer, light-demanding climax, and shade-tolerant climax. In 2015, a second tree species component survey was conducted to determine the growth of surviving individuals (adults) and count the recruited and dead individuals. For each population, the net change rates for individuals (adults and regenerative) and basal area (only adults) were determined. Proportion tests were conducted to verify whether representativeness of the regeneration guilds changed over the study period. The results showed that the forest investigated is undergoing a structuring process characterized by gains in number of individuals and basal area. In contrast, stability in species richness and representativeness of regeneration guilds was verified, with highlight for light-demanding climax species. In conclusion, the assessed forest is undergoing a structuring phase that favors the regeneration of light-demanding species.

In an area of tropical seasonal semideciduous forest, the soil characteristics, floristic composition, physiognomic structure, and the distribution of three regeneration and three dispersal guilds were studied for four stands within the forest that had documented histories of varying degrees of human disturbance. The aim was to study forest regeneration in areas of preserved forest and secondary forest, with parts of both types of forest experiencing either ‘intensive’ or ‘occasional’ cattle trampling. The study was carried out in the Sebastião Aleixo da Silva Ecological Station, Bauru, São Paulo State, Brazil. Two stands were called ‘secondary’ because they corresponded to forest tracts that were felled and occupied by crops and pastures in the past and then abandoned to forest regeneration ca. 40 years before this study. The other two stands, called ‘preserved’, corresponded to areas of the fragment where the forest has been maintained with only minor human impacts. The arboreal component of the tree community (diameter at breast height or
dbh≥5 cm) was sampled in 20 plots of40 m×40 m, and the subarboreal component (diameter at the base of the stem ordbs<5 cm andheight≥0.5 m) in subplots of40 m×2 m. Physiognomic features, such as canopy height and density of climbing plants, were registered all over a5 m×5 m gridline laid on the sample plots. Soil bulk samples were collected for chemical and textural analyses. Most detected differences contrasted the secondary to the preserved forest stands. The soils of the secondary stands showed higher proportions of sand and lower levels of mineral nutrients and organic matter than those of the preserved stands, probably due to higher losses by leaching and erosion. Compared to the secondary stands, the preserved ones had higher proportions of tall trees, higher mean canopy height, lower species diversity, higher abundance of autochorous and shade-tolerant climax species, and lower abundance of pioneer and light-demanding climax species. Despite the high proportion of species shared by the preserved and secondary stands (108 out of 139), they differed consistently in terms of density of the most abundant species. On the other hand, the secondary and preserved stands held similar values for tree density and basal area, suggesting that 40 years were enough to restore these features. Effects of cattle trampling on the vegetation were detected for the frequency of trees of anemochorous and zoochorous species, which were higher in the stands under occasional and intensive cattle trampling, respectively. The density of thin climbers was lower in the stands with intensive trampling. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]- Published

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate the tree species population dynamics in a fragment of Montane Araucaria Forest, in the municipality of Lages, Santa Catarina (SC) state, along a period of four years (2008-2012). For this, for all species sampled, in 50 permanent plots of 10x20m, the regeneration guilds [pioneer (P), light-demanding climax (LDC) and shade-tolerant climax (STC)] and dynamics rates were determined (mortality, recruitment, loss and gain in basal area, net change in abundance and basal area). The existence of significant association between regeneration guilds and dynamic rates was verified by chi-square tests, applied to contingency tables. Changes in relative participation of regeneration guilds between years were analyzed using proportion tests. In 2008, 87 species were found (P: 9, LDC: 64, STC: 11, non-classified: 3), 1.841 ind.ha-1 and 36.17 m².ha-1. In 2012, 86 species (P: 9, LDC: 63, STC: 11, non-classified: 3), 1.882 ind.ha-1 and 39.17 m².ha-1 were observed. Most species showed gains in basal area. Among the most abundant, the highest rates of recruitment and basal area gain were observed for Banara tomentosa Clos, with, respectively, 5.43%.year-1 and 6.08%.year-1, and the highest rates of mortality and basal area loss occurred for Zanthoxylum rhoifolium Lam., with, respectively, 7.75%.year-1 and 4.74%.year-1. No significant association between the dynamics patterns and regeneration guilds was observed, whose relative participations in the community, during the evaluated period, were constants. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that the forest fragment is in the process of structural instability, indicated by the increment of the number of individuals and basal area, and floristic-successional stability, due to the low floristic substitution and maintenance of the relative importance of the regeneration guilds, along the evaluated period.
