Aim: We aimed to determine the epidemiology and symptoms of red eyes in patients from Northern Iran. Materials and Methods: A descriptive study was planned involving 840 patients referred to the eye clinic of Bu-Ali Sina hospital in Sari, Iran, with the chief complaint of eye redness. Results: Of 840 patients, 525 were men (62.5%) and 315 were women (37.5%). Most of the patients were over 39 years of age. 55.7 percentage of them lived in cities and 44% were from villages. The most common eye symptoms with eye redness were: Eye abrasion (57%), tears in eyes (49%) and swollen eye lid (30%). Red eyes without any symptoms in eyes were diagnosed as runny nose (4.2%) and headaches (3.4%). 11.9% and 19.6% of the patients had a previous history of red eye and had visited doctors for red eyes respectively. Conclusions: Red eyes are more common in men than women. Introducing dangerous causes of red eyes in the future can help to health care professional to on time diagnosis of red eyes related problems. - Abstract
In a study of 75 workers employed in a tobacco factory producing cheroots we measured cellular contents of tear fluid, redness of eyes, discomfort, total (0-5.7 mg/m) and respirable dust in the breathing zone and total ambient dust by stationary sampling (0.08-1.0 mg/m). A matched group of 50 office workers in a telephone company (total ambient dust concentration between 0.08-0.13 mg/m) was similarly examined as referents. We found a difference between the two companies with regard to cell counts, with tobacco workers having the largest numbers except for lymphocytes. Among tobacco workers we furthermore found that the number of cuboidal and columnar epithelial cells increased during the day. The increase of cuboidal cells, however, occurred mainly in a small group of tobacco workers exposed to the highest concentrations of tobacco dust (mean =1.26 mg/m). No difference in the sensation of eye irritation was found between companies, but increased irritation in the morning was associated with increased exposure to total dust during the work-shift among tobacco workers. A dose-dependent difference in photographically measured eye redness was found among the tobacco workers. It could not be explained by differences in tobacco smoking, sex, age, sleeping habits or use of glasses. Irritation of lips and upper airways as reported by questionnaire were more common in tobacco workers than in referents. In conclusion the tobacco workers, more often than the referents, had complaints and objective changes in the mucous membranes of the eyes. These may be related to tobacco dust exposure. The present paper is a report of a 14-month-old boy who presented with fever, coryzal symptoms and red eyes. The patient developed a generalized tonic clonic convulsion on day 2 of his illness. Ophthalmological assessment demonstrated bilateral hypopyon and vitreous opacity resulting from endophthalmitis. Cerebrospinal fluid was positive for Neisseria meningitidis (A, C, Y, W 135) by latex agglutination. He was treated with high dose intravenous cefotaxime and intravitreal ceftazidime. He made good recovery and his vision was preserved. In view of the potential morbidity and mortality associated with systemic meningococcal infection, the presence of red eye and hypopyon provides important diagnostic clues indicating the need to investigate beyond superficial conjunctivitis. It should prompt the clinician to recognize endopthalmitis early and accurately diagnose this serious disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

9. Designing, producing and evaluating a multimedia computer based education system for teaching red eye diagnosis
- Abstract
The aim of this research thesis was to develop principles for the production of a computer based education (CBE) system designed to teach the diagnosis of 'red eyes' to undergraduate optometry students. The topic of 'red eyes' was chosen as the subject matter for this research because of an increasing movement by Australian optometrists towards using therapeutic agents for the treatment of 'red eyes'. Based upon the results of an extensive literature review on CBE and effective teaching strategies, a series of four separate tutorials on 'red eye' diagnosis was developed. The first tutorial was initially programmed and evaluated in a pilot study. Results from this evaluation were incorporated into the design of a further three tutorials which increased in difficulty and decreased in feedback from tutorial one to four. Assessment of the four tutorials was then conducted using nine final year students and one recent graduate. Qualitative evaluation of the tutorials indicated that the teaching strategies that were applied were successful in teaching most of the concepts considered important in 'red eye diagnosis'. Of note was the feeling of the students that they had increased their understanding of the topic and their enthusiasm for the usefulness of the tutorials and for CBE in general. As a result of this research process, a structure was developed for teaching the topic of 'red eye' diagnosis that breaks the learning process down into four stages: 1. Recognition and Nomenclature 2. Signs & Symptoms/Differential Diagnosis 3. Simulated Controlled Examinations 4. Simulated Uncontrolled Examinations. Each of these four stages needs to be assessed in a similar manner to that used in the research and described in this thesis.

- Abstract
Aim: This study aimed to determine the causes of red eye disease among patients of Mazandaran-Northern Iran., Methods: This cross sectional study included 840 patients who referred to eye clinics with ocular complaints. A detailed history of patients was recorded and their eyes were examined. Then, pre designed checklists were completed by the researcher., Results: The most common cause of red eye was conjunctivitis - 30% (252/ 840), foreign bodies 23.2%, trauma including penetrating or blunt 8.6%, respectively. There was a significant relationship between the red eye trauma, with acute onset and duration of less than a week (P=<0.0001). Diagnoses of red eye were conjunctivitis in 31.3% of the cases separately, viral causes (19.5%), allergic (7%) and bacterial (4%), foreign bodies 22.9%, pterygium 7%, and trauma 6.5%, respectively., Conclusion: In the current study, the most common causes of red eyes were conjunctivitis, foreign bodies, and trauma respectively. Red eye was more common in males than in females. An appropriate and proper training of risky factors of red eyes in the future could reduce the risk of serious visual problems.
