Reciprocal inhibition and coactivation are strategies of the central nervous system used to perform various daily tasks. In automatic postural responses (APR), coactivation is widely investigated in the ankle joint muscles, however reciprocal inhibition, although clear in manipulative motor actions, has not been investigated in the context of APRs. The aim was to identify whether reciprocal inhibition can be observed as a strategy in the recruitment of gastrocnemius Medialis (GM), Soleus (So) and Tibialis Anterior (TA) muscles in low- and high-velocity forward and backward perturbations. We applied two balance perturbations with a low and a high velocity of displacement of the movable platform in forward and backward conditions and we evaluated the magnitude and latency time of TA, GM and So activation latency, measured by electromyography (EMG). In forward perturbations, coactivation of the three muscles was observed, with greater activation amplitude of the GM and lesser amplitude of the So and TA muscles. For backward, the pattern of response observed was activation of the TA muscle, a decrease in the EMG signal, which characterizes reciprocal inhibition of the GM muscle and maintenance of the basal state of the So muscle. BACKGROUND: Lower trapezius (LT) plays an important role in maintaining the stability of the scapula. Sufficient activation of LT can reduce the risk of rotator cuff tear and shoulder impingement syndrome. The Y-raise exercise has been recommended for effective LT activation. However, the upper trapezius (UT) can be co-activated during universal Y-raise exercise. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the activity of the UT, LT, and serratus anterior (SA) during Y-raise exercise with and without isometric adduction (IAD) using Thera-Band. METHODS: 21 healthy males voluntarily participated in the study. The participants were asked to perform Y-raise exercise with and without IAD using Thera-Band. Surface electromyography was used to measure the muscle activity of UT, LT, and SA during Y-raise exercise with and without IAD. Paired t-test was used to analyze the significance of the muscle activity of UT, LT, and SA as well as the activity ratio of LT/UT and LT/SA. The significance level was set at α = 0.05. RESULTS: Compared with Y-raise exercise without IAD, the muscle activity of UT and SA decreased (p = 0.001 and p = 0.003, respectively), whereas that of LT increased (p = 0.038) during Y-raise exercise with IAD. Additionally, the activity ratio of LT/UT and LT/SA was greater during Y-raise exercise with IAD (p = 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Y-raise exercise with IAD using Thera-Band is recommended as an efficient exercise to selectively activate the LT and increase the activity ratio of LT/UT and LT/SA. Repetitive passive movement (RPM) enhances reciprocal inhibition. RPM is more effective when performed rapidly and at wide joint angles. However, patients with limited joint range of motion may not receive the most effective RPM. Therefore, having an alternative method for performing RPM in patients who cannot perform actual exercise due to limited joint motion is necessary. This study investigated the effects of RPM on spinal excitability using a visual kinesthetic illusion. Participants included 17 healthy adults (7 women). Measurements were taken before, during, and immediately after the intervention. We established two intervention conditions: the control condition, in which participants focused their attention forward, and the illusion condition, in which participants watched a video about RPM. F-waves from the tibialis anterior and soleus muscles were measured, and F-wave persistence and F/M amplitude ratios were analyzed. Under the illusion condition, compared with the preintervention condition, the F/M amplitude ratio of the tibialis anterior increased by approximately 44% during the intervention (p < 0.05), whereas the F-wave persistence of the soleus decreased by approximately 23% from the immediate start of the intervention (p < 0.05). This study suggests that a visual kinesthetic illusion can increase the spinal excitability of the tibialis anterior, whereas reciprocal inhibition can decrease the spinal excitability of the soleus. Spinal cord interneurons play critical roles shaping motor output, but their precise identity and connectivity remain unclear. Focusing on the V1 interneuron cardinal class we defined four major V1 subsets in the mouse according to neurogenesis, genetic lineage-tracing, synaptic output to motoneurons, and synaptic inputs from muscle afferents. Sequential neurogenesis delineates different V1 subsets: two early born (Renshaw and Pou6f2) and two late born (Foxp2 and Sp8). Early born Renshaw cells and late born Foxp2-V1 interneurons are tightly coupled to motoneurons, while early born Pou6f2-V1 and late born Sp8-V1 interneurons are not, indicating that timing of neurogenesis does not correlate with motoneuron targeting. V1 clades also differ in cell numbers and diversity. Lineage labeling shows that the Foxp2-V1 clade contains over half of all V1 interneurons, provides the largest inhibitory input to motoneuron cell bodies, and includes subgroups that differ in birthdate, location, and proprioceptive input. Notably, one Foxp2-V1 subgroup, defined by postnatal Otp expression, is positioned near the LMC and receives substantial input from proprioceptors, consistent with an involvement in reciprocal inhibitory pathways. Combined tracing of ankle flexor sensory afferents and interneurons monosynaptically connected to ankle extensors confirmed placement of Foxp2-V1 interneurons in reciprocal inhibitory pathways. Our results validate previously proposed V1 clades as unique functional subtypes that differ in circuit placement, with Foxp2-V1 cells forming the most heterogeneous subgroup. We discuss how V1 organizational diversity enables understanding of their roles in motor control, with implications for their diverse ontogenetic and phylogenetic origins.

Purpose: Isometric training and pre-activation are proven to enhance acceleration performance. However, traditional strength training exercises do not mirror the acceleration-specific activation patterns of the gluteal muscles, characterized by ipsilateral hip extension during contralateral hip flexion. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine gluteal muscle activity of acceleration-specific exercises compared to traditional strength training exercises. Methods: In a cross-sectional study design, the peak electromyographic activity of two acceleration-specific exercises was investigated and compared to two traditional strength training exercises each for the gluteus maximus and medius. Twenty-four participants from various athletic backgrounds (13 males, 11 females, 26 years, 178 cm, 77 kg) performed four gluteus maximus [half-kneeling glute squeeze (HKGS), resisted knee split (RKS), hip thrust (HT), split squat (SS)] and four gluteus medius [resisted prone hip abduction (RPHA), isometric clam (IC), side-plank with leg abduction (SP), resisted side-stepping (RSS)] exercises in a randomized order. Results: The RKS (p = 0.011, d = 0.96) and the HKGS (p = 0.064, d = 0.68) elicited higher peak gluteus maximus activity than the SS with large and moderate effects, respectively. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were found between the HT, RKS and HKGS. The RPHA elicited significantly higher gluteus medius activity with a large effect compared to RSS (p < 0.001, d = 1.41) and a moderate effect relative to the SP (p = 0.002, d = 0.78). Conclusion: The acceleration-specific exercises effectively activate the gluteal muscles for pre-activation and strength training purposes and might help improve horizontal acceleration due to their direct coordinative transfer. Evaluating reciprocal inhibition of the thigh muscles is important to investigate the neural circuits of locomotor behaviors. However, measurements of reciprocal inhibition of thigh muscles using spinal reflex, such as H‐reflex, have never been systematically established owing to methodological limitations. The present study aimed to clarify the existence of reciprocal inhibition in the thigh muscles using transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS). Twenty able‐bodied male individuals were enrolled. We evoked spinal reflex from the biceps femoris muscle (BF) by tSCS on the lumber posterior root. We examined whether the tSCS‐evoked BF reflex was reciprocally inhibited by the following conditionings: (1) single‐pulse electrical stimulation on the femoral nerve innervating the rectus femoris muscle (RF) at various inter‐stimulus intervals in the resting condition; (2) voluntary contraction of the RF; and (3) vibration stimulus on the RF. The BF reflex was significantly inhibited when the conditioning electrical stimulation was delivered at 10 and 20 ms prior to tSCS, during voluntary contraction of the RF, and during vibration on the RF. These data suggested a piece of evidence of the existence of reciprocal inhibition from the RF to the BF muscle in humans and highlighted the utility of methods for evaluating reciprocal inhibition of the thigh muscles using tSCS. Different speeds of locomotion require heterogeneous spinal populations, but a common mode of rhythm generation is presumed to exist. Here, we explore the cellular versus synaptic origins of spinal rhythmicity at different speeds by performing electrophysiological recordings from premotor excitatory interneurons in larval zebrafish. Chx10-labeled V2a neurons are divided into at least two morphological subtypes proposed to play distinct roles in timing and intensity control. Consistent with distinct rhythm generating and output patterning functions within the spinal V2a population, we find that descending subtypes are recruited exclusively at slow or fast speeds and exhibit intrinsic cellular properties suitable for rhythmogenesis at those speeds, while bifurcating subtypes are recruited more reliably at all speeds and lack appropriate rhythmogenic cellular properties. Unexpectedly, however, phasic firing patterns during locomotion in rhythmogenic and non-rhythmogenic V2a neurons alike are best explained by distinct modes of synaptic inhibition linked to cell type and speed. At fast speeds reciprocal inhibition in descending V2a neurons supports phasic firing, while recurrent inhibition in bifurcating V2a neurons helps pattern motor output. In contrast, at slow speeds recurrent inhibition in descending V2a neurons supports phasic firing, while bifurcating V2a neurons rely on reciprocal inhibition alone to pattern output. Our findings suggest cell-type-specific, not common, modes of rhythmogenesis generate and coordinate different speeds of locomotion.

Slow and fast movements are controlled by distinct sets of spinal V2a neurons with matching properties and connections.

It is difficult to perform multiplication with digital devices and required to the more practical implementation methods. Thus, a well-known simpler transfer function adaptation to a swimming pattern generator is suggested for the digital implementation easiness in here. However, the direct adaptation of this function to this neural circuit is insufficient, so a control parameter is included in the laterally inhibitor neurons. Its fittest value is determined by a bifurcation diagram for getting a neural circuit that produces rhythmic patterns. Then, a four-segmented neural swimming pattern generator is constructed by using this simpler function and the anti-phase firings of neuron groups on the opposite sides is observed by the numerical simulations. Additionally, it is aimed to obtain an adjustable time delay between the neural segments, so the ‘reciprocal inhibition’ synaptic connections are adapted to this four-segmented structure. The effect of the reciprocal inhibition on time delays is observed by the standard deviation and numerical simulations. The final aim is to get the electrical signals with the digital device-based implementation for emulating the swimming rhythmic pattern generator of a lamprey and a Field Programmable Gate Array-based realization is carried out by using the simpler transfer function. To see the achievement of this implementation, the anti-phase firings of neuron groups on the opposite sides and getting an adjustable time delay between neural segments are verified by the electrical signals. Moreover, the swimming pattern generator of a lamprey is realized with FPGA without using any multiplier blocks thanks to the simplification process.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the participant’s attention target during repetitive passive movement (RPM) intervention on reciprocal inhibition (RI) and joint movement function. Twenty healthy adults participated in two experiments involving four attention conditions [control (forward attention with no RPM), forward attention (during RPM), monitor attention (monitor counting task during RPM), ankle joint attention (ankle movement counting task during RPM)] during 10-min RPM interventions on the ankle joint. Counting tasks were included to ensure the participant’s attention remained on the target during the intervention. In Experiment 1, RI was measured before, immediately after, and 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 min after the RPM intervention. In Experiment 2, we evaluated ankle joint movement function at the same time points before and after RPM intervention. The maximum ankle dorsiflexion movement (from 30° plantar flexion to 10° dorsiflexion) was measured, reflecting RI. In Experiment 1, the RI function reciprocal Ia inhibition was enhanced for 10 min after RPM under all attention conditions (excluding the control condition. D1 inhibition was enhanced for 20 min after RPM in the forward and monitor attention conditions and 30 min after RPM in the ankle joint attention condition. In Experiment 2, the joint movement function decreased under the forward and monitor attention conditions but improved under the ankle joint attention condition. This study is the first to demonstrate that the participant’s attention target affected the intervention effect of the RI enhancement method, which has implications for improving the intervention effect of rehabilitation.

In early infancy, rats randomly alternate between the sleeping and waking states–from postnatal day 2–10 (P2-P10), sleep and wake bouts are both exponentially distributed with increasing means, while from P10-P21 sleep and wake bout means continue to increase, though there is a striking qualitative shift in the distribution of wake bouts from exponential to power law. The behavioral states of sleep and wakefulness correspond to the activity of sleep-active and wake-active neuronal brainstem populations, with reciprocal inhibition between the two ensuring that only one population is active at a time. The locus coeruleus (LC) forms a third component of this circuit that rises in prominence during the P10-P21 period, as experimental evidence shows that an as-of-yet undeciphered interaction of the LC with sleep-active and wake-active populations is responsible for the transformation of the wake bout distribution from exponential to power law. Interestingly, the LC undergoes remarkable physiological changes during the P10-P21 period–gap junctions within the LC are pruned and network-wide oscillatory synchrony declines and vanishes. In this work, we discuss a series of models of sleep-active, wake-active, and the LC populations, and we use these models to postulate the nature of the interaction between these three populations and how these interactions explain empirical observations of sleep and wake bout dynamics. We hypothesize a circuit in which there is reciprocal excitation between the LC and wake-active population with inhibition from the sleep-active population to the LC that suppresses the LC during sleep bouts. During the P2-P10 period, we argue that a noise-based switching mechanism between the sleep-active and wake-active populations provides a simple and natural way to account for exponential bout distributions, and that the locked oscillatory state of the LC prevents it from impacting bout distributions. From P10-P21, we use our models to postulate that, as the LC gradually shifts from a state of synchronized oscillations to a state of continuous firing, reciprocal excitation between the LC and the wake-active population is able to gradually transform the wake bout distribution from exponential to power law.

Static stretching and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching techniques can modulate specific neural mechanisms to improve the range of motion. However, the effects of modulation of these neural pathways on changes in the range of motion with static stretching remain unclear. Patterned electrical stimulation of the sensory nerve induces plastic changes in reciprocal la inhibition. The present study examined the effects of patterned electrical stimulation and static stretching on a range of motion and passive torque in plantarflexion muscles. The subjects were 14 young men (age 20.8 ± 1.3 years). The effects of patterned electrical stimulation (10 pulses at 100 Hz every 1.5 s) or uniform electrical stimulation (one pulse every 150 ms) to the common peroneal nerve for 20 min on reciprocal la inhibition of the Hoffman reflex (H-reflex) were examined. Reciprocal la inhibition was evaluated as short-latency suppression of the soleus H-reflex by conditioning stimulation of the common peroneal nerve. Then, the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (patterned electrical stimulation or uniform electrical stimulation) or prolonged resting (without electrical stimulation) and static 3-min stretching on the maximal dorsiflexion angle and passive torque were investigated. The passive ankle dorsiflexion test was performed on an isokinetic dynamometer. Stretch tolerance and stiffness of the muscle-tendon unit were evaluated by the peak and slope of passive torques, respectively. Patterned electrical stimulation significantly increased reciprocal la inhibition of soleus H-reflex amplitude (9.7 ± 6.1%), but uniform electrical stimulation decreased it significantly (19.5 ± 8.8%). The maximal dorsiflexion angle was significantly changed by patterned electrical stimulation (4.0 ± 1.4°), uniform electrical stimulation (3.8 ± 2.3°), and stretching without electrical stimulation (2.1 ± 3.3°). The increase in stretch tolerance was significantly greater after patterned electrical stimulation and uniform electrical stimulation than after stretching without electrical stimulation. Stiffness of the muscle-tendon unit was significantly decreased by patterned electrical stimulation, uniform electrical stimulation, and stretching without electrical stimulation. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and static stretching improve stretch tolerance regardless of the degree of reciprocal la inhibition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, a brief biography of Wolpe is followed by a critical review of the book that illustrates his major contributions to the evolution of cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT) as the most empirically supported model of psychotherapy. The importance of hip extensor and abductor muscles for sport performance and injury reduction is well-documented. To target these muscle groups, the barbell hip thrust and barbell glute bridge are used to load the posterior kinetic chain while band-resisted abduction exercises, like band-resisted side stepping, target the lateral kinetic chain. However, combining band-resisted hip abduction with barbell hip-extension dominant exercises has not yet been investigated. In this study, ten male subjects underwent a two-part research protocol with surface electromyography (sEMG) measured during a 5-repetition maximum (5-RM) load performance to determine differences in peak and mean muscular activity between band-resisted barbell hip thrust (BBHT) and barbell hip thrust (BHT), and between band-resisted barbell glute bridge (BBGB) and barbell glute bridge (BGB). The results indicated three significant differences between the pairs, with both banded conditions eliciting greater sEMG activity in the Upper Gluteus Maximus compared to non-banded conditions. However, BGB unexpectedly elicited greater sEMG activity in the Gluteus Medius compared to BBGB. The differences in muscle activity could potentially be explained by reciprocal inhibition and synergistic dominance. Further research is needed to make definitive statements on the superiority of band-resisted barbell exercises over non-banded barbell exercises and transferability to sport performance.

The neural mechanisms of walking impairment after stroke are not well characterized. Specifically, there is a need for understanding the mechanisms of impaired plantarflexor power generation in late stance. Here, we investigated the association between two neurophysiologic markers, the long-latency reflex (LLR) response and dynamic facilitation of antagonist motor-evoked responses, and walking function. Fourteen individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis and thirteen healthy controls performed both isometric and dynamic plantarflexion. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) assessed supraspinal drive to the tibialis anterior. LLR activity was assessed during dynamic voluntary plantarflexion and individuals post-stroke were classified as either LLR present (LLR+) or absent (LLR-). All healthy controls and nine individuals post-stroke exhibited LLRs, while five did not. LLR+ individuals revealed higher clinical scores, walking speeds, and greater ankle plantarflexor power during walking compared to LLR- individuals. LLR- individuals exhibited exaggerated responses to TMS during dynamic plantarflexion relative to healthy controls. The LLR- subset revealed dysfunctional modulation of stretch responses and antagonist supraspinal drive relative to healthy controls and the higher functioning LLR+ individuals post-stroke. These abnormal physiologic responses allow for characterization of individuals post-stroke along a dimension that is clinically relevant and provides additional information beyond standard behavioral assessments. These findings provide an opportunity to distinguish among the heterogeneity of lower extremity motor impairments present following stroke by associating them with responses at the nervous system level.

A well‐coordinated facilitation–inhibition control of motor neuronal persistent inward currents (PICs) via diffuse neuromodulation and local inhibition is essential to ensure motor units discharge at required times and frequencies. Present best estimates indicate that PICs are reduced in older adults; however, it is not yet known whether PIC facilitation–inhibition control is also altered with ageing. We investigated the responses of PICs to (i) a remote handgrip contraction, which is believed to diffusely increase serotonergic input onto motor neurones, and (ii) tendon vibration of the antagonist muscle, which elicits reciprocal inhibition, in young and older adults. High‐density surface electromyograms were collected from soleus and tibialis anterior of 18 young and 26 older adults during triangular‐shaped plantar and dorsiflexion contractions to 20% (handgrip experiments) and 30% (vibration experiments) of maximum torque (rise‐decline rate of 2%/s). A paired‐motor‐unit analysis was used to calculate ∆F, which is assumed to be proportional to PIC strength. ΔF increased in both soleus (0.55 peaks per second (pps), 16.0%) and tibialis anterior (0.42 pps, 11.4%) after the handgrip contraction independent of age. Although antagonist tendon vibration reduced ΔF in soleus (0.28 pps, 12.6%) independent of age, less reduction was observed in older (0.42 pps, 10.7%) than young adults (0.72 pps, 17.8%) in tibialis anterior. Our data indicate a preserved ability of older adults to amplify PICs following a remote handgrip contraction, during which increased serotonergic input onto the motor neurones is expected, in both lower leg muscles. However, PIC deactivation in response to reciprocal inhibition was impaired with ageing in tibialis anterior despite being preserved in soleus. Lineage labeling shows that the Foxp2-V1 clade contains over half of all V1 interneurons, provides the largest inhibitory input to motoneuron cell bodies, and includes subgroups that differ in birthdate, location, and proprioceptive input. Notably, one Foxp2-V1 subgroup, defined by postnatal Otp expression, is positioned near the LMC and receives substantial input from proprioceptors, consistent with an involvement in reciprocal inhibitory pathways. Combined tracing of ankle flexor sensory afferents and interneurons monosynaptically connected to ankle extensors confirmed placement of Foxp2-V1 interneurons in reciprocal inhibitory pathways. Our results validate previously proposed V1 clades as unique functional subtypes that differ in circuit placement, with Foxp2-V1 cells forming the most heterogeneous subgroup. The virtual movement of an augmented body, perceived as part of oneself, forms the basis of kinesthetic perception induced by visual stimulation (KINVIS). KINVIS is a visually induced virtual kinesthetic perception that clinically suppresses spasticity. The present study hypothesized that central neural network activity during KINVIS affects subcortical neural circuits. The present study aimed to elucidate whether reciprocal and presynaptic inhibition occurs during KINVIS. Seventeen healthy participants were recruited (mean age: 27.9 ± 3.6 years), and their soleus Hoffmann-reflexes (H-reflexs) were recorded by peripheral nerve stimulation while perceiving the dorsiflexion kinesthetic illusion in the right-side foot (seated in a comfortable chair). Two control conditions were set to observe the same foot video without the kinesthetic illusion while focusing on the static foot image. Unconditioned H-reflex and two types of conditioned H-reflexes were measured: Ia (reciprocal inhibition) and D1 (presynaptic inhibition). Reciprocal Ia and D1 inhibition of the soleus muscle was significantly enhanced during the kinesthetic illusion compared to the condition without kinesthetic illusion (a post-hoc analysis using the Bonferroni test: Ia inhibition, p = 0.002; D1 inhibition, p = 0.049). This study indicates that kinesthetic illusion elicits an inhibitory effect on the monosynaptic reflex loop of Ia afferents, potentially inhibiting the hyperexcitability of the stretch reflex. These findings demonstrate that brain activity associated with visually induced kinesthetic illusions acts on spinal inhibition circuits. These insights may be valuable in clinical rehabilitation practice, specifically for the treatment of spasticity.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of reciprocal inhibition for posterior shoulder tightness (PST), internal rotation at 90° abduction (ABIR) limitation, and subacromial impingement in elementary and junior high school baseball players. Methods: The present study included 290 elementary school and junior high school baseball players who were members of an organized baseball team and attended a medical checkup in 2014. Seventeen participants were excluded because they were left-handed. We applied a sit-up exercise as a tool of reciprocal inhibition to all participants. Before and after the sit-up exercise, we evaluated the shoulder range of motion (ROM) in external rotation at 90° abduction (ABER), ABIR, and horizontal flexion (HF) in both shoulders and the prevalence of subacromial impingement in the dominant shoulder. We defined PST as a ≧15°decrease in the HF angle of the dominant shoulder in comparison to the nondominant shoulder before the sit-up exercise and divided participants into two groups (the PST group and the non-PST groups). An independent t-test was performed to compare the shoulder ROM, and a chi-squared test was performed to compare the prevalence of subacromial impingement between the two groups. A dependent t-test was performed to compare intragroup changes in the shoulder ROM. The McNemar test was performed to compare intragroup changes in the prevalence of subacromial impingement. Results: Fifty-six of 273 participants had PST in the initial examination. The initial examination revealed that the ROM of ABIR and HF in the dominant shoulder were significantly lower in the PST group than those in the non-PST group, whereas the ROM of ABER and total arc were significantly higher in the PST group. The prevalence of subacromial impingement in the PST group was significantly higher than that in the non-PST group. The sit-up exercise improved ABER, ABIR, total arc, HF, and the prevalence of subacromial impingement in both groups. However, the amount of ROM change did not differ between the two groups for any parameter with the exception of HF. Conclusion: The presence of PST affects the prevalence of subacromial impingement but was not related to the loss of ABIR or the prevalence of pathological glenohumeral internal rotation deficit. The sit-up exercise, as reciprocal inhibition, can transiently improve the prevalence of subacromial impingement via the improvement of PST.

To assess the relationship between spinal reflexes and motor function in sub-acute (SAS) and chronic stroke (CS) patients. Twelve SAS and 16 CS patients underwent electrophysiological assessment of heteronymous facilitation (HF), heteronymous inhibition (HI), disynaptic reciprocal inhibition (DRI), and D1 inhibition (D1). The Fugl-Meyer Assessment Lower Extremity (FMA-LE) and modified Ashworth scale (MAS) were assessed. The relationship between spinal reflexes and motor function was examined in a cross-sectional manner. SAS patients were also longitudinally evaluated before and after intensive rehabilitation for approximately 2 months. SAS patients with triceps surae muscle spasticity (MAS ≥ 1) showed higher HF values (p = 0.03) than those without spasticity. SAS patients with quadriceps muscle spasticity showed higher HF values (p < 0.01); patients with hamstring muscle spasticity showed higher DRI value (disinhibition) (p < 0.01) than those without spasticity. CS patients showed no significant correlation between spinal reflexes and motor function. The longitudinal study revealed a significant correlation between increase in D1 inhibition and FMA-LE improvement in SAS patients (r = 0.69). The association between impaired spinal reflexes varies with the stage of stroke; HF and DRI may be spasticity indicators in SAS patients. Background: To expand the muscular extensibility, alternation of muscle energy techniques have been upheld, yet proof present to help the general value of a specific methodology. Two strategies of muscle energy techniques have been explored in the osteopathic writing that differs principally in the group of muscles focused on. Objective: The objective of our study was to find out the effectiveness of post isometric relaxation and reciprocal inhabitation technique on hamstring muscle flexibility among students of Johar Institute of Professional Studies Lahore. Methods: The Quasi-experimental study was for comparison of two Relaxation Techniques with 50 healthy students of both gender were recruited by non-probability convenient sampling technique from different department of Johar Institute st of Professional Studies Lahore from 1 October to March 2020. For enrolling the subjects in this study we used convenience sampling technique. Furthermore, 50 subjects were selected on the basis of inclusion exclusion criteria and were arbitrarily divided in to two groups with 25 in each group. Hamstring length was assessed using AKE test. For intervention, Group A performed post isometrics relaxation and Group B performed Reciprocal Inhibition Technique. Knee range of motion was assessed pre-intervention and post-intervention. Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and Universal Goniometer were assessment tools accessed for all patients before and after 4 weeks of physical therapy intervention. Data were documented and analysis was done using SPSS version 20. Paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test was applied to find association between the variables of hypothesis. Results: In both groups, the pre-intervention and post-intervention measurements by statistical analysis found that there is significant improvement in hamstring muscle flexibility with P value = 0.05 for both right side and left side. BACKGROUND: Exercise for activating foot valgus muscle is an important intervention approach in the field of foot and ankle rehabilitation. It has been widely used in rehabilitation practice; however, its interactive effect on antagonist muscles is still unclear OBJECTIVE: To explore the reciprocal inhibitory effect of foot varus muscle activation exercise on antagonistic muscle. METHODS: Eighteen college student volunteers were selected. The elastic band was used for the isometric exercises of foot eversion. Muscle elasticity, tension and hardness of the marked area were measured using MyotonPRO before and after the intervention, and pain intensity and ankle dorsiflexion activity were measured. The data were analyzed and processed by t-test. The implementation of the study protocol complied with the relevant ethical requirements of Hebei Normal University, and all subjects signed an informed consent form prior to the participation in the trial. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: After intervention, muscle tension oscillation frequency was significantly decreased (P < 0.05); the hardness score and muscle elasticity score were significantly increased (P < 0.05); the pain score in tenderness area was significantly lower (P < 0.05); and the dorsal malleolus flexion activity was significantly improved (P < 0.05). To conclude, foot varus activation exercises can immediately reduce muscle tension and hardness, enhance muscle elasticity, and improve exercise fatigue and performance. This reciprocal inhibitory intervention have a potential to reduce the pain score, improve ankle dorsiflexion range of motion, relieve pain, and reduce the risk of sports injury. Objective: the purpose of the research was to study of different types of spinal inhibition when performing voluntary movements in persons doing increasing intensity graded physical exercises sports. Materials and methods: 45 male took part in the research. Presynaptic inhibition of Ia afferents of soleus was evaluated using the technique of Y. Mizuno et al., nonreciprocal inhibition of α-motoneurons - by E. Pierrot-Deseilligny et al, and reciprocal inhibition of α-motoneurons - by C. Crone et al., in the state of relative muscular rest and during a 30-second isometric contraction with a force of 25% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) using the multijoint medical-diagnostic complex «Biodex». Results: it was established that weakening of inhibitory processes occurred in comparison with the state of relative muscular rest in the course of a 30-second isometric contraction; this pattern is related to the specificity of supraspinal excitatory and inhibitory effects on Ia and Ib interneurons in the spinal cord when performing a voluntary movement. The voluntary movement performed for 30 seconds was accompanied by an increased activity of the presynaptic inhibition of Ia afferents of foot flexor, unlike reciprocal and nonreciprocal inhibition. Conclusions: the voluntary movement presynaptic inhibition must be actively regulating the excess afferent input to α-motoneurons of agonist and antagonist lower leg muscles, accelerating nonreciprocal and reciprocal inhibitory effects rendered on them, providing normal motor activity in man. New data derived from such research can be a theoretical basis for the study of physiological patterns of involvement of cortical and spinal neuronal inhibition networks underlying motor tasks of different complexity in athletes.

Different speeds of locomotion require heterogeneous spinal populations, but a common mode of rhythm generation is presumed to exist. Here, we explore the cellular versus synaptic origins of spinal rhythmicity at different speeds by performing electrophysiological recordings from premotor excitatory interneurons in larval zebrafish. Chx10-labeled V2a neurons are divided into at least two morphological subtypes proposed to play distinct roles in timing and intensity control. Consistent with distinct rhythm generating and output patterning functions within the spinal V2a population, we find that descending subtypes are recruited exclusively at slow or fast speeds and exhibit intrinsic cellular properties suitable for rhythmogenesis at those speeds, while bifurcating subtypes are recruited more reliably at all speeds and lack appropriate rhythmogenic cellular properties. Unexpectedly, however, phasic firing patterns during locomotion in rhythmogenic and non-rhythmogenic V2a neurons alike are best explained by distinct modes of synaptic inhibition linked to cell type and speed. At fast speeds reciprocal inhibition in descending V2a neurons supports phasic firing, while recurrent inhibition in bifurcating V2a neurons helps pattern motor output. In contrast, at slow speeds recurrent inhibition in descending V2a neurons supports phasic firing, while bifurcating V2a neurons rely on reciprocal inhibition alone to pattern output. Coordination of behavior for cooperative performances often relies on linkages mediated by sensory cues exchanged between participants. How neurophysiological responses to sensory information affect motor programs to coordinate behavior between individuals is not known. We investigated how plain-tailed wrens (Pheugopedius euophrys) use acoustic feedback to coordinate extraordinary duet performances in which females and males rapidly take turns singing. We made simultaneous neurophysiological recordings in a song control area "HVC" in pairs of singing wrens at a field site in Ecuador. HVC is a premotor area that integrates auditory feedback and is necessary for song production. We found that spiking activity of HVC neurons in each sex increased for production of its own syllables. In contrast, hearing sensory feedback produced by the bird's partner decreased HVC activity during duet singing, potentially coordinating HVC premotor activity in each bird through inhibition. When birds sang alone, HVC neurons in females but not males were inhibited by hearing the partner bird. When birds were anesthetized with urethane, which antagonizes GABAergic (γ-aminobutyric acid) transmission, HVC neurons were excited rather than inhibited, suggesting a role for GABA in the coordination of duet singing. We have previously established that PV+ neurons and Npas1+ neurons are distinct neuron classes in the external globus pallidus (GPe): they have different topographical, electrophysiological, circuit, and functional properties. Aside from Foxp2+ neurons, which are a unique subclass within the Npas1+ class, we lack driver lines that effectively capture other GPe neuron subclasses. In this study, we examined the utility of Kcng4-Cre, Npr3-Cre, and Npy2r-Cre mouse lines (both males and females) for the delineation of GPe neuron subtypes. By using these novel driver lines, we have provided the most exhaustive investigation of electrophysiological studies of GPe neuron subtypes to date. Corroborating our prior studies, GPe neurons can be divided into two statistically distinct clusters that map onto PV+ and Npas1+ classes. By combining optogenetics and machine learning-based tracking, we showed that optogenetic perturbation of GPe neuron subtypes generated unique behavioral structures. Our findings further highlighted the dissociable roles of GPe neurons in regulating movement and anxiety-like behavior. We concluded that Npr3+ neurons and Kcng4+ neurons are distinct subclasses of Npas1+ neurons and PV+ neurons, respectively. Finally, by examining local collateral connectivity, we inferred the circuit mechanisms involved in the motor patterns observed with optogenetic perturbations. In summary, by identifying mouse lines that allow for manipulations of GPe neuron subtypes, we created new opportunities for interrogations of cellular and circuit substrates that can be important for motor function and dysfunction. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the effect of the spinal circuit of repetitive magnetic stimulation (rPMS) on the soleus muscle among healthy subjects., Methods: Nineteen healthy adults were included in this study. Intermittent rPMS was applied to the left soleus muscle for 20 minutes. We applied different intensity rPMS (high-intensity, low-intensity, and non-stimulation) in different three days. RI (reciprocal inhibition) from the tibialis anterior to the soleus muscle with an inter-stimulus interval (ISI) of 2ms and 20ms was assessed before, immediately after and 30 minutes at each session., Results: Two factor repeated measure ANOVA test showed a significant interaction (F 2,33  = 9.688, p < 0.001) between tasks and time in the RI ratio 2ms. Post-hoc analysis showed that RI ratio 2ms significantly differed from those immediately after, and 30 min after high-intensity rPMS (p = 0.001 and p = 0.003, respectively). A significant difference was observed between high-intensity rPMS and non-stimulation immediately after the stimulation (p = 0.003). However, no significant difference was found in the RI ratio 20ms between all the intensities (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: This study demonstrates that high-intensity rPMS can effectively modulate spinal circuits, as evidenced by the decreased RI in healthy individuals. This suggests the potential use of rPMS as a therapeutic intervention for patients with muscle weakness. Disinhibition of the RI may lead to a more effective contraction of the target muscle. This effect could be expected to strengthen the muscles and alleviate paralysis, making it a promising avenue for future research and clinical applications in the field of rehabilitation. Both spike rate and timing can transmit information in the brain. Phase response curves (PRCs) quantify how a neuron transforms input to output by spike timing. PRCs exhibit strong firing-rate adaptation, but its mechanism and relevance for network output are poorly understood. Using our Purkinje cell (PC) model, we demonstrate that the rate adaptation is caused by rate-dependent subthreshold membrane potentials efficiently regulating the activation of Na+ channels. Then, we use a realistic PC network model to examine how rate-dependent responses synchronize spikes in the scenario of reciprocal inhibition-caused high-frequency oscillations. The changes in PRC cause oscillations and spike correlations only at high firing rates. The causal role of the PRC is confirmed using a simpler coupled oscillator network model. This mechanism enables transient oscillations between fast-spiking neurons that thereby form PC assemblies. Our work demonstrates that rate adaptation of PRCs can spatio-temporally organize the PC input to cerebellar nuclei.

Aim: There are studies comparing the effects of post isometric relaxation technique & reciprocal inhibition technique on hamstring muscle flexibility but to the best of our knowledge there is hardly any study that has reported comparative immediate effect of these two techniques. Thus the aim of our study was to evaluate the immediate effect of these two techniques on hamstring muscle flexibility. Method: The research design used was Comparative Experimental study design. Total 46 participants were screened and those meeting the inclusion criteria (n=40) were included in the study. The participants were randomly divided into two groups- group A - post isometric relaxation and Group B - reciprocal inhibition of 20 each. Pre and immediate post intervention scores were measured in terms of AKET Findings: Inter group comparison (student's unpaired t test) showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of AKET. The comparison of pre and post intervention values of the outcome measure in both the groups showed a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: It can be concluded from the present study that both post isometric relaxation technique & reciprocal inhibition technique have an immediate effect on reducing hamstring muscle tightness. Spinal reciprocal inhibition (RI) and intracortical inhibition are important physiological mechanisms for voluntary movement control and functional recovery of voluntary movement in patients with stroke. Spasticity, which impairs motor performance, is one of the major manifestations of stroke. RI may be involved in reducing spasticity. This might allow finger extension, and, therefore, better hand function by reducing co-contraction with finger extensors. One potential mechanism of functional reorganization of the motor cortex is that pre-existing masking pathways are unmasked by decreased intracortical inhibition. The inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA plays an important role in this process. Changes in RI might be mediated through unmasking of cortical pathways through decreased inhibition, with the neurotransmitter GABA. These changes can be assessed using short-latency intracortical inhibition (SICI) and RI. Functional recovery in the chronic phase of stroke induced by rehabilitation was accompanied by SICI and spinal RI changes. Cortical reorganization and spinal plasticity might play important roles in functional recovery induced by rehabilitation, even in patients with chronic severe hemiparesis. Hyper-reflexia is occasionally seen in acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN), but its pathophysiology is unclear. We report a patient with AMAN following Campylobacter jejuni enteritis, who showed generalized hyper-reflexia, bilateral Hoffmann sign and right Babinski sign. MRI and transcranial magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex disclosed no corticospinal tract involvement. An extensive electrophysiological investigation documented α-motoneuron hyperexcitability and dysfunction of the interneuronal inhibitory circuits in the spinal anterior horn. • A walking assistive device that targets ankle movements has been utilized. • Short-term intervention of the device decreased spinal cord reciprocal inhibition. • The device might be effective for regulating spinal cord excitability. One of the major problems with walking encountered by patients with spastic hemiplegia is diminished toe clearance due to spasticity of their leg muscles. To improve their walking, a specialized robot assist for ankle movements (RE-Gait) has been utilized. The present study examined the neurophysiological effects whether spinal cord reciprocal Ia inhibition (RI) in the leg was altered by using RE-Gait. Sixteen patients with a clinical diagnosis of stroke were divided into the two groups, RE-Gait walking group (Group R) and normal (controlled) walking group (Group C). In each group, they walked on a flat floor for 15 min with or without RE-Gait. The depression of soleus (Sol) H-reflexes conditioned by common peroneal nerve stimuli with the conditioning-test (C-T) intervals of 1, 2, 3, and 4 ms were assessed before and immediately after each walking session. After the intervention, the LSM (SE) of Sol H-reflex amplitude with 1, 2 and 3 ms C-T interval conditions were significantly decreased in group R (1 ms: 88.15 (4.60), 2 ms: 86.37 (4.60), 3 ms: 89.68 (4.62)) compared to group C (1 ms: 105.57 (4.56), 2 ms: 100.89 (4.58), 3 ms: 107.72 (4.58)) [1 ms: p = 0.012, 2 ms: p = 0.035, 3 ms: p = 0.011]. Introduction Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurodevelopmental condition that results from an injury to a developing brain. Children with CP fail to execute precise, well-coordinated movements, and excessive muscular co-contraction or co-activation is a prominent attribute of CP. The normal reciprocal relationship between agonists and antagonists during voluntary movements is altered in patients with CP. H-reflex, which is often regarded as the electrical equivalent of the spinal stretch reflex, can be used to examine the overall reflex arc, including the Ia sensory afferent strength and the spinal motoneuron excitability state. Furthermore, neuromodulatory influence of vibration on H-reflex has been found, which has been increasingly investigated to ascertain its potential use as an intervention in patients with increased spinal reflex excitability. Our goal was to identify the brain mechanism underlying the motor deficits by studying Soleus H-reflex changes during voluntary movement (dorsiflexion) and also to determine the role of vibration in H-reflex modulation in children with spastic CP. Methods Soleus H-reflex was recorded in 12 children with spastic CP (10-16 years) and 15 age-matched controls. Recordings were obtained at rest, during dorsiflexion, and during vibratory stimulation for each subject. H-responses (Hmax amplitudes and Hmax-to-Mmax ratio) were compared among the controls and the cases (CP), for the experiments performed, by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The recruitment curves depicting the distribution of mean H-response amplitudes with stimulus intensity increment, for dorsiflexion and vibration were compared among controls and cases by the two-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test. p-value <0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results Hmax amplitudes and the Hmax-to-Mmax ratio increased (15 % and 12.2 % increment, respectively) from the resting values in the children with CP (p<0.05), while controls exhibited a decrease (reduction of 62% and 57 %, respectively) during dorsiflexion (p<0.05). Vibratory stimulation produced a decreasing trend in H-response measures in both the groups. There was about 15 % and 16 % reduction respectively among children with CP while that of 24 % and 21 % respectively among the controls. The differences in the recruitment curves (distribution of average H-response amplitudes with stimulation intensity) recorded during dorsiflexion and vibration experiments among controls compared with those with CP were found to be statistically significant by the two-sample KS test (p<0.0001). Conclusion The failure of H-reflex suppression during voluntary antagonist muscle activation suggests the presence of impaired reciprocal inhibition in spastic CP. In early infancy, rats randomly alternate between the sleeping and waking states-from postnatal day 2-10 (P2-P10), sleep and wake bouts are both exponentially distributed with increasing means, while from P10-P21 sleep and wake bout means continue to increase, though there is a striking qualitative shift in the distribution of wake bouts from exponential to power law. The behavioral states of sleep and wakefulness correspond to the activity of sleep-active and wake-active neuronal brainstem populations, with reciprocal inhibition between the two ensuring that only one population is active at a time. The locus coeruleus (LC) forms a third component of this circuit that rises in prominence during the P10-P21 period, as experimental evidence shows that an as-of-yet undeciphered interaction of the LC with sleep-active and wake-active populations is responsible for the transformation of the wake bout distribution from exponential to power law. Interestingly, the LC undergoes remarkable physiological changes during the P10-P21 period-gap junctions within the LC are pruned and network-wide oscillatory synchrony declines and vanishes. In this work, we discuss a series of models of sleep-active, wake-active, and the LC populations, and we use these models to postulate the nature of the interaction between these three populations and how these interactions explain empirical observations of sleep and wake bout dynamics. We hypothesize a circuit in which there is reciprocal excitation between the LC and wake-active population with inhibition from the sleep-active population to the LC that suppresses the LC during sleep bouts. During the P2-P10 period, we argue that a noise-based switching mechanism between the sleep-active and wake-active populations provides a simple and natural way to account for exponential bout distributions, and that the locked oscillatory state of the LC prevents it from impacting bout distributions.
