Being a proficient reader in a digital world requires a strong reading foundation, but also the ability to think critically, which is a challenge for many students in Spain. Computerized adaptive tests and process data (information about students’ actions when responding to the test) are especially important when assessing skills such as reading. This work aims to analyze how the use of technology is changing the concept of reading and the ways to evaluate it. This has implications for Spanish students and any professional in charge of interpreting and designing educational assessments. The researcher must ensure that the use of data and technology is adequate for the purposes of the assessment and that it works in a reliable, valid, and fair way for the people involved, but also the user must know when, how, and for what purposes to use the data

Using the example of “Hajduci” by Branislav Nušić, as school extensive reading for the fifth grade of primary school, this paper analyzes the compliance of ten selected editions of this work with the orthographic norm that was current at the time when these editions were published. Ten editions of this work were selected, starting from the first edition (1933/34), to the most recent one (2018), aiming to cover both periods of Serbian orthographic norm – the first, Belić’s period, with the editions from 1923, 1930, 1934, 1950, and the second period, of Matica Srpska orthographic norm, with the editions from 1960 (together with Matica hrvatska), and in 1993 and 2010 whose authors are M. Pešikan, М. Pižurica and J. Jerković. In order to emphasize the importance of this analysis for teaching practice, it also includes the textbooks (readers) containing the excerpts from the novel “Hajduci”. Bearing in mind that the students’ language competencies in the field of grammar and orthographic norms are also developed by reading the works included in the reading lists, such as Nušić’s “Hajduci”, the aim of this paper is to determine to what extent, and according to which orthographic rules, the publishers of the later editions of this novel harmonised it with the current ortographic norm.

In this investigation, the reading is characterized as a discursive process that considers the individual reader as a producer of meaning. It considering all the socio-historical-ideological situation in which the reader and author are inserted. From this perspective, we intend to discuss some actual concepts in the academic debate on the teaching of reading, the external evaluation and its relation to public policy. Specifically, it discussing the conceptions of reading and analyzing the reading issues in the exam of the last year of High School. The focus is to verify that these issues are in line with current conceptions of reading. Therefore, we conclude that the reading questions of this external evaluation SAEMS – system of external evaluation of Mato Grosso do Sul, seeks an interpretation with a single answer. It leaving no margin for polyphony, assuming that there is always a single response. The meaning is ready and finished, so these issues do not cause the student/reader interacts with the text. Quality incorporation of children’s literature has long been supported to help students learn. The purpose of this study was to examine the 79 fiction selections of our state’s sponsored reading list for grades K-2. The list was examined for original publication date, selections recognized as award winners, sex of authors, sex of protagonist, race of protagonists, and the presence of gender or racial bias. Results indicate the sponsored reading list is out of date, needs to contain more award winning selections, and fails to represent a balance of women authors and selections containing female protagonists. Gender bias was minimal and no presence of racial bias was observed.

The article suggests the need for a shift in the historian's traditional outlook on literature, according to which the latter is a provider of «useful knowledge and information.» This point of view is based on the conception of the literary work—the novel, in particular— as a faithful representación of reality. Nevertheless, a critique of this mimetic ability of the novel is perceived as early as the mid-nineteenth century. The article explores how several canonical nineteenth-century authors began to question the mimetic capacity of the novel. It also discusses later developments in literary theory concomitant with Modernism's break with realism. Beginning with the Avant-garde, the novel demanded a different kind of reader, one able to perceive and interrógate those unresolved textual processes and problems that the novel itself evidences and therefore demand from the historian an opening to new forms of reading.

- Abstract
Biblical literacy is an important value in the life of any person, and especially in the life of a believer in Jesus Christ. However, all too often, believers lack a firm grasp of Scripture knowledge and understanding, and consequently, are unprepared to detect and avoid erroneous teaching and to "contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints" (Jude 3). One of the reasons for this pervasive lack of biblical literacy among many believers is because there is a lack in the development of a habit in personal Bible reading outside of the weekly church services. Therefore, it is the purpose of this thesis project to transition the members of Contending for the Faith Christian Fellowship from only reading the Bible during Sunday and mid-week services to reading it personally and regularly on a weekly basis outside of the scheduled church services. In order to achieve this goal for the members of Contending for the Faith Christian Fellowship, the questionnaire research method was conducted on 12 voluntary members of the church, along with a four week Bible reading exercise. The results were collected confidentially, analyzed, and reported, comparing the pre-four week Bible reading exercise to the post-four week Bible reading exercise

- Abstract
Consistent Bible engagement is an indispensable spiritual discipline in the life of growing Christians. Many who profess they are Christian will also unashamedly state that they are too busy or have no time to read the Bible at all. Pastors who take upon the mantle of leadership within the local church must seek ways to be intentional about mobilizing their congregations to engage with Scripture in order to address this alarming trend. This thesis project desires to offer the local church a practical suggestion for getting their congregation to engage with the Bible in addition to times of corporate gathering. This research project will gauge the effectiveness of bringing Lectio Divina as a daily Bible engagement practice into the lives of the adult congregation and measuring the change in an individual's spiritual growth to address this problem. The desired outcome of this thesis project is to increase the number of adults who have developed a daily habit of engaging with God's Word. The outcome of this project will not be to assess one's overall knowledge of the Bible or to increase biblical literacy. The goal will be to improve the skills needed for adults to confidently engage with God's Words in order to have a daily encounter with the living God. This project includes a daily Bible reading plan, a devotional, and a Bible engagement methodology that will better equip adults for daily Bible reading.

- Abstract
The purpose of this Doctor of Ministry project is to show the impact the public reading of Scripture in worship has on spiritually developing the people of God, and by further showing whether public Scripture reading will enhance biblical literacy, spiritual development and a change of perception relating to Scripture's role in worship. Despite the surge of worship practices in the contemporary evangelical church designed to attract people to the worship service, and practices which seek to develop spiritual growth, the actual biblical mandated practice of the public reading of Scripture as one method for developing individuals is negligible in evangelical churches. This project researched and implemented embraces the premise that a return to the public reading of Scripture in worship is primary to the spiritual development of the people of God. The thesis project investigates this hypothesis and provides the results that a return by pastors and church leaders to the practice of the public reading of Scripture in worship will assist members in developing a walk with God which shows spiritual growth and development.

The role of the reader in constructing the meaning of works acquired importance in literary theory through reception aesthetics. However, the sociology of reading is not used as much in literary research work. We report a detailed and extensive single-case study of an acquired dyslexic patient, L.H.D., who suffered a left-hemisphere lesion as a result of a ruptured aneurysm. We present evidence that L.H.D.’s reading errors stem from a deficit in visual letter identification, and we use her deficit as a basis for exploring a variety of issues concerning prelexical representations and processes in reading. First, building on the work of other researchers, we present evidence that the prelexical reading system includes an allograph level of representation that represents each distinct visual shape of a letter (e.g., a, A, etc., for the letter A). We extend a theory proposed by Caramazza and Hillis [Caramazza, A., & Hillis, A. (1990a). Spatial representation of words in the brain implied by studies of a unilateral neglect patient.Nature,346, 267–269] to include an allograph level, and we probe the nature of the allograph representations in some detail. Next, we explore the implications of visual similarity effects and letter perseverations in L.H.D.’s reading performance, arguing that these effects shed light on activation dynamics in the prelexical reading system and on the genesis of L.H.D.’s errors. We also probe the processing of letter case in the visual letter identification process, proposing that separate abstract letter identity and case representations are computed. Finally, we present evidence that the allograph level as well as the abstract letter identity level implement a word-based frame of reference. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With support, young adolescents crave the challenge of learning about serious ideas through serious literature. Middle-level learners also enjoy opportunities to become immersed in activities that foster a deeper understanding of serious ideas. After discussing the value of using serious narrative literature, a rationale is provided for supporting its relevance to young adolescents. Then, pertinent materials and activities are presented for helping middle school students to be successful with serious narrative literature. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Objective To examine reading and related skills in children with and without orofacial clefts. Methods Forty-two children with orofacial clefts were recruited from an urban craniofacial center. A demographically similar sample of 43 children without clefts was recruited using community advertisements and a research registry. Participants completed assessments of basic reading, phonological awareness, phonological memory, reading fluency, and rapid naming. Parents completed a semi-structured interview regarding educational and medical history. Results Children with clefts scored significantly lower than controls on measures of basic reading, phonological memory, and reading fluency. Conclusions This is one of the first studies of reading in children with orofacial clefts to include a control sample. The findings suggest that children with clefts are less adept readers than demographically matched peers without clefts, supporting the need to monitor academic achievement in this population. To characterize the spatial relationship between activations related to language-induced seizure activity, language processing, and motor control in patients with reading epilepsy. We recorded and simultaneously monitored several physiological parameters [voice-recording, electromyography (EMG), electrocardiography (ECG), electroencephalography (EEG)] during blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in nine patients with reading epilepsy. Individually tailored language paradigms were used to induce and record habitual seizures inside the MRI scanner. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used for structural brain analysis. Reading-induced seizures occurred in six out of nine patients. One patient experienced abundant orofacial reflex myocloni during silent reading in association with bilateral frontal or generalized epileptiform discharges. In a further five patients, symptoms were only elicited while reading aloud with self-indicated events. Consistent activation patterns in response to reading-induced myoclonic seizures were observed within left motor and premotor areas in five of these six patients, in the left striatum (n = 4), in mesiotemporal/limbic areas (n = 4), in Brodmann area 47 (n = 3), and thalamus (n = 2). These BOLD activations were overlapping or adjacent to areas physiologically activated during language and facial motor tasks. No subtle structural abnormalities common to all patients were identified using VBM, but one patient had a left temporal ischemic lesion. Based on the findings, we hypothesize that reflex seizures occur in reading epilepsy when a critical mass of neurons are activated through a provoking stimulus within corticoreticular and corticocortical circuitry subserving normal functions. Clinical neuropsychology relies on the use of appropriate test norms. Normative studies frequently stratify based on age, education, sex, and race. None to date has reported norms based on literacy, despite the substantial evidence that literacy impacts cognitive functioning. Some researchers have suggested that literacy is a more accurate reflection of academic achievement and quality of education than years of education, particularly for African Americans. The current study provides literacy-based normative data for multiple neuropsychological measures based on a sample of predominantly low socioeconomic status African Americans. These normative data should improve the diagnostic accuracy of performances by African-American clients with similar demographic backgrounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the extent to which mora deletion (phonological analysis), nonword repetition (phonological memory), rapid automatized naming (RAN), and visual search abilities predict reading in Japanese kindergartners and first graders. Analogous abilities have been identified as important predictors of reading skills in alphabetic languages like English. In contrast to English, which is based on grapheme-phoneme relationships, the primary components of Japanese orthography are two syllabaries-hiragana and katakana (collectively termed "kana")-and a system of morphosyllabic symbols (kanji). Three RAN tasks (numbers, objects, syllabary symbols [hiragana]) were used with kindergartners, with an additional kanji RAN task included for first graders. Reading measures included accuracy and speed of passage reading for kindergartners and first graders, and reading comprehension for first graders. In kindergartners, hiragana RAN and number RAN were the only significant predictors of reading accuracy and speed. In first graders, kanji RAN and hiragana RAN predicted reading speed, whereas accuracy was predicted by mora deletion. Reading comprehension was predicted by kanji RAN, mora deletion, and nonword repetition. Although number RAN did not contribute unique variance to any reading measure, it correlated highly with kanji RAN. Implications of these findings for research and practice are discussed. This review discusses recent cognitive neuroscience investigations into the biological bases of developmental dyslexia, a common disorder impacting approximately 5 to 17 percent of the population [Stanovich, 1986, Matthew effects in reading: Some consequences of individual differences in the acquisition of literacy. Reading Research Quarterly 21: 360–407]. Our aim is to summarize central findings from several lines of evidence that converge on pivotal aspects of the brain bases of developmental dyslexia. We highlight ways in which the approaches and methodologies of developmental cognitive neuroscience that are addressed in this special issue—including neuroimaging, human genetics, refinement of cognitive and biological phenotypes, neural plasticity and computational models—can be employed in uncovering the biological bases of this disorder. Taking a developmental perspective on the biological bases of dyslexia, we propose a simple cascading model for the developmental progression of this disorder, in which individual differences in brain areas associated with phonological processing influence the specialization of visual areas involved in the rapid processing of written words. We also discuss recent efforts to understand the impact of successful reading interventions in terms of changes within cortical circuits associated with reading ability. The availability of text reading and editing software for Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) makes it timely to consider whether PDAs are useful tools for reading learning materials. This paper describes a study that evaluated the use of PDAs for reading by students on a Masters course run by the UK Open University. The evaluation consisted of pre- and post-questionnaires, and follow-up interviews. In addition, students discussed their experiences in a computer-based conference. Findings show that while the portability of the device was welcomed by students, and the electronic format was advantageous, limitations such as the small screen size, navigation difficulties, and slow and error-prone methods for entering text, made it difficult to read and interact with documents on the PDA. The paper recommends that further research consider the value of PDAs as reading devices in the context of other potential ways that PDAs can be used as learning tools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
"Researchers are increasingly interested in the cognitive behaviors students display during tests. This interest has led researchers to look for innovative ways to collect this type of data. Due to the proliferation of computer-based assessments, process data has become popular for its ability to help show what students know, what students don’t know, and how students interact during assessments. Aim: The aims of the current study are 1) to use process data to identify potential reading strategies and 2) to examine if reading strategy is associated with gender, race/ethnicity, and differences in performance. Methods: Apply latent profile analysis (LPA) to extracted process data variables collected from US examinees who participated in the literacy section of the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). The variables are item response time and number of highlight events per item. Results: A two-class solution provided the best fit for the data in each testlet of the literacy section of the PIAAC. Class one progressed through items in each testlet faster than class two. Class one most closely resembled a skimming strategy while class two most closely resembled a full-reading strategy. However, there was not conclusive evidence to suggest that the classes were reminiscent of skimming and full-reading. Class assignment had no significant relationship with gender nor race/ethnicity, and there was no significant difference in literacy performance between the two classes, except in one case. Even then, both classes performed at a level two on the PIAAC literacy achievement scale. Discussion: Response time was found to be the only discriminating variable in the identification of patterns related to reading strategies. While there was some separation between classes, it was minimal in some cases. Response time was found to be useful but not enough to identify conclusive reading strategies. Further research is needed to identify process data variables with explanatory power other than response time to aid in the identification of reading strategies."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Verbal tasks are typically assumed to be processed by the left cerebral hemisphere, but the right hemisphere may have some role in language. EEG alpha was recorded from homologous central and parietal scalp locations of 12 male subjects reading technical passages and stories. Reading stories engaged the central area of the right hemisphere more than reading technical material. There was no significant difference in reading speed. Thus, some aspects of reading differentially involve the right hemisphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
School libraries are key agents in the educational system in Ghana. Therefore, this study sought to assess the impact of school libraries on students’ academic success in Bunkpurugu- Yunyoo District of Northern Ghana. The descriptive survey design was employed to determine the level of impact on the various variables deplored for the study. The population for this study was made up of Circuit Supervisors, teachers and students within the study area. Purposive sampling technique was employed to select three junior high schools with libraries and another set of three without libraries. Krejcie and Morgan (1970) table was used to select (150) students from a population of (240). Simple random sampling technique was used to proportionally select 25 respondents from each of the six schools. The instruments used for the study includes questionnaire, interviews, observation and existing document analysis. Key informants of 10 were interviewed and a visit to each of the schools included in this study was undertaken to observe how libraries utilisation could enhance students’ academic achievement. Paired t-test calculated at (p≤ 0.05) was used to determine differences in students’ academic achievement. The results indicated a positive significant difference in the academic achievement of students in schools with libraries and those without libraries in all the items that were investigated. The study recommends for a policy of ‘one rural school, one library’ stocked with relevant reading materials and the setting up of ‘Reading Clubs’ in rural schools in order to sustain students’ interest in reading.

- Abstract
This thesis compares two approaches to extensive reading to determine the extent that they facilitate vocabulary development. The first approach is a traditional reading-only approach, and the second approach is a task-based approach which supplements reading with post-reading meaning-focused discussions. These two approaches are compared using a battery of tests, most notably a measure for productive knowledge of word associations. For years, scholars have believed that word associations have potential to reveal important information about a person's language proficiency. One reason word associations are intriguing is that a large amount of a person's lexicon can be assessed (Meara, 2009). This is possible because a large amount of data from the learner can be gathered in a short period of time. Another intriguing aspect of word association data is that it is one aspect of vocabulary knowledge that is not based on correct performance. This raises the question of an appropriate means of assigning value to the associations, a question which still hinders research to this day. Recent research has made progress in this area with a multi-level taxonomy (i.e., Fitzpatrick, 2007), creating a picture of the types of associations which exist in a learner's lexicon. However, this taxonomy does not address the strength of the association. Wilks and Meara (2007) have attempted to tackle association strength through the use of self-report measures, whereby a test-taker reports strength of association on a four-point scale from weak to strong. This has left them with " ... problems which we have not yet solved, notably a tendency for some test takers to claim that most associations are strong, while others appear to be very reluctant to identify strong associations ..." (Meara, 2009, p. 80). In other words, the question of how to appropriately determine association strength is still unanswered. In the current study lexical development, in the form of word association knowledge, was

- Abstract
The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to identify and uncover themes that emerged from special education teachers’ experiences, beliefs, and perceptions of evidence-based reading instruction. The theoretical framework that guided this study consisted of the epistemological theory of knowledge and Bandura’s social cognitive theory. Data collection methods included semistructured in-depth interviews, documentation analysis, and classroom observations. Data analyses involved reflecting on 13 special education teachers’ collective comments, dialogues, written documentation, and interview transcripts. Three themes emerged regarding the phenomenon of teaching reading to children with disabilities (a) Knowledge sources, (b) Environmental diversity, and (c) Organizational constraints. These essential themes reflected special education teachers’ beliefs and perceptions of evidence-based reading instruction for children with disabilities.

- Abstract
Considerable psycho-physiological research on empathy examines biological structures such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA-axis) and oxytocin systems as efficacious methods for strengthening positive emotional responses. This study recruited 76 adult participants (54 female, 23 male) for the purpose of evaluating the effects oxytocin and fiction reading have on empathetic responses. Participants completed a measure of trauma and received either intranasal oxytocin, a story created to induce emotional responses, or a neutral non-fiction story. Stressors were counterbalanced as a family or non-family stimuli to assess changes in stress response measured by salivary cortisol and heart rate variability. Results supported existing research stating that heart rate variability (HRV) is a more sensitive measure of stress. HRV statistically significantly interacted between type of stressor and PTSD symptomology (1, 70) = 5.018, p = .028, η2 =0.06. Scores on the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) indicated there were increases in empathy across time, but were not impacted by exposure to stress or treatment condition. Trauma was identified as a statistically significant factor on heart rate variability F(1, 70) = 8.39, p = .005, η2 = .10. Treatment condition did not impact cortisol levels across time F(2, 71) = .2.532, p = .087, η2 = .11. Taken together, these results suggest support for the use of biomarkers in measuring the rate of stress and recovery for those with and without trauma. These findings suggest potential avenues for translational research and implications for theory and practice.

- Abstract
We studied the initial process of reading, with a focus on typography, whether it is possible to increase childrens lust to read in the age six to seven years old, by adjusting the typography and graphic design. We conduct this study through qualitative and quantitative studies, mainly interviews with a main focus on children in this particular age were used. In addition to the interviews a questioniare were sent out to a selection of students. The study also contained an interview with a pedagogue as well as studies of the current and existing textbooks and teaching aids that is used on the school we are looking into. During the study we consulted educated pedagogues to get an understanding of the children and their learning and to be able to approach them in a suitable way. The theories we have been using were mainly from a typographic point of view. Other areas we explored were theories about reading processes. This study showed that every child needs a method that is suitable for them and that the material provided today is typographically inconsistent. The childrens and teachers needs and wishes in typography did not correspond with the current teaching aids design. From this study the followning points were made about how to design a textbook for children in the first grade: • The typeface should be a sans serif. • The point size should be bigger than 12 points. • Text should be aligned to the left. • Sentences should be short without becoming abstract. • To maintain focus on the text the layout should be simple and unbarked. • The format should be designed after the pourpose of the publication, for example when it is a complement to the textbook, the format should be of such character that it is easy for the children to bring home. • There should be a typographical consistency through all of the materials provided to the children.

- Abstract
Originating in a curiosity of how literature is used in the EFL classroom, the aim for this study has been to examine if four teachers‟ purpose for, and procedure in, using literature in the EFL classroom concur with what is a useful method on the subject as demonstrated by a methodological model constructed from current research. For this study, a model of beneficial methods of using literature in the EFL class was constructed from selected current research. Because there is a lot of research in this area, there is no claim that this study includes all theories regarding the use of literature in the EFL classroom. Still, it was possible to construct a useful model of common and constructive methods of literature use in EFL education. The conclusion of this study is that the teachers‟ purpose when using literature in the EFL class varies with the different teachers. However, they do concur with that of the national syllabi and to some extent also to written research on the subject. Further on, the teachers do work both in accordance with, and opposite to, procedures that the methodological model establishes to be productive.
