Past research has shown that rape myths can have damaging consequences for victims of sexual assault. This study investigated the predictive relationship of grandiose narcissism, psychopathic traits and rape myths acceptance with attitudes towards rape victims in the general population of Pakistan. The research employed a cross-sectional design and utilized a purposive sample of 416 participants with 178 males, 158 females and 80 non-binary individuals in the age range 18–68. It is pertinent to mention that non-binary individuals have only recently been added in research as a separate group especially with regard to the Pakistani culture. Therefore, little is known regarding their perspectives towards rape victims. G Power analysis was used for determining the sufficiency of the sample size. Data analysis was done using Pearson Product Moment Correlation, stepwise regression, MANOVA, and Moderated Mediation Analysis via SPSS 21.0. The findings showed that most positive attitudes towards rape victims were held by non-binary individuals followed by females with the attitudes of males being least favorable. Additionally, the results indicated that acceptance of rape myths, primary psychopathy, and grandiose narcissism had significant effects on attitudes towards rape victims, with the latter also showing a conditional indirect effect through primary psychopathy on the relationship between rape myths acceptance and attitudes towards rape victims. Furthermore, the study discovered that these variables strongly impacted views towards rape victims. Additionally, rape myth acceptance, levels of primary psychopathy, and attitudes towards rape victims all showed significant gender differences. Moreover, grandiose narcissism had a significant conditional effect on the association between rape myth acceptance and attitudes towards rape victims via the mediation of primary psychopathy. Results The results showed that having lower scores on rape myths acceptance (being less likely to endorse rape myths) was significantly associated with positive attitudes towards rape victims. Similarly, being female, having graduate or above level education, not blaming the victim, having prior history of sexual victimization, offering support for friends experiencing sexual assault, and being liberal were significantly associated with positive attitudes towards rape victims. Additionally, confirmatory factor analysis of the Illinois Rape Myths Acceptance Scale showed acceptable model fit indices and relevance to the Pakistani context. Conclusion In conclusion, it has been assessed through the results that showed that having lower scores on rape myths acceptance (being less likely to endorse rape myths) was significantly associated with positive attitudes towards rape victims. With the problem being quite prevalent around the world, research has shown that numerous factors such as rape proclivity and perpetuation of rape myths are critical. The present study assesses the role of rape myths acceptance, rape victim empathy, and causal attributions towards rape victims as significantly predicting attitudes towards rape victims among the general population of Pakistan. Rape myths acceptance and causal attributions would significantly and positively predict negative attitudes towards rape victims. Method A cross-sectional research design was used for the study. The online survey questionnaire was filled by 573 participants including 275 males and 298 females who were selected through purposive sampling from the general population of Pakistan. The sample size was estimated using G*Power analysis with 95% confidence intervals. Data collection was done using Illinois rape myths, attitudes towards rape victim’s scale, rape victim empathy, and causal attributions scale were used. Data analysis was done using Pearson product-moment correlation, hierarchical regression, MANOVA, and mediation analysis via AMOS, all of which were executed using SPSS 21.0. Results The findings showed that higher levels of rape myths acceptance, low empathy towards rape victims, and victim blaming are significantly associated with negative attitudes towards rape victims. There were no gender differences among the participants. However, rape victim empathy significantly mediated the association between rape myths acceptance and rape victim empathy. It was also found that rape myths acceptance, rape victim empathy, and causal attributions significantly predicted attitudes towards rape victims. Another core finding was that there were no gender differences among participants with regard to rape myths acceptance, rape victim empathy, causal attributions, and attitudes towards rape victims. Conclusions Therefore, the findings contribute towards a better understanding of the rape myths in the general population of Pakistan and how the prevalence of such myths may contribute towards social, cultural, and legal problems of rape myths. This study examined the association between victimization and victim blaming using a sample of n = 142 participants in a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) with the influence of subject gender, victim stereotyping level, threat level, and victim gender for victim blaming. Belief in a just world was included in the model as a covariate. Mediation analyses were conducted with the degree of identifiability with the victim and attitudes toward traditional role models as explanatory approaches. In addition, acceptance of rape myths was considered. The GLMM analyses suggest that victim blaming by male subjects was significantly higher on average than by female subjects when all other predictors were held constant. As an explanatory approach for these effects of the subjects’ gender on victim blaming, partial mediation was found with the degree of identification with the victim as a mediator. No main effects were found for the other influencing factors, but only a statistically significant three-way interaction. This indicates a differential effect of the level of stereotyping for male and female victims in conditions that end in high threat. The finding of the main effect of subjects’ gender seems to be particularly important for the legal system, as it appears to make a difference in who is asked in terms of victim blameworthiness. This finding highlights the importance of considering a victim’s personal characteristics and the need for future research with an additional focus on the characteristics of the sentencers to help clarify potential biases. Aggression-related sexual fantasies (ASF) are considered an important risk factor for sexual aggression, but empirical knowledge is limited, in part because previous research has been based on predominantly male, North-American college samples, and limited numbers of questions. The present study aimed to foster the knowledge about the frequency and correlates of ASF, while including a large sample of women and a broad range of ASF. A convenience sample of N = 664 participants from Germany including 508 (77%) women and 156 (23%) men with a median age of 25 (21–27) years answered an online questionnaire. Participants were mainly recruited via social networks (online and in person) and were mainly students. We examined the frequencies of (aggression-related) sexual fantasies and their expected factor structure (factors reflecting affective, experimental, masochistic, and aggression-related contents) via exploratory factor analysis. We investigated potential correlates (eg, psychopathic traits, attitudes towards sexual fantasies) as predictors of ASF using multiple regression analyses. Finally, we examined whether ASF would positively predict sexual aggression beyond other pertinent risk factors using multiple regression analysis. The participants rated the frequency of a broad set of 56 aggression-related and other sexual fantasies, attitudes towards sexual fantasies, the Big Five (ie, broad personality dimensions including neuroticism and extraversion), sexual aggression, and other risk factors for sexual aggression. All participants reported non-aggression-related sexual fantasies and 77% reported at least one ASF in their lives. Being male, frequent sexual fantasies, psychopathic traits, and negative attitudes towards sexual fantasies predicted more frequent ASF. ASF were the strongest predictor of sexual aggression beyond other risk factors, including general aggression, psychopathic traits, rape myth acceptance, and violent pornography consumption. ASF may be an important risk factor for sexual aggression and should be more strongly considered in prevention and intervention efforts. The strengths of the present study include using a large item pool and a large sample with a large proportion of women in order to examine ASF as a predictor of sexual aggression beyond important control variables. Its weaknesses include the reliance on cross-sectional data, that preclude causal inferences, and not continuously distinguishing between consensual and non-consensual acts. ASF are a frequent phenomenon even in in the general population and among women and show strong associations with sexual aggression. The potential negative impact of sexualized video games on attitudes toward women is an important issue. Studies that have examined this issue are rare and contain a number of limitations. Therefore, it largely remains unclear whether sexualized video games can have an impact on attitudes toward women. This study examined the consequences of sexualized video game content and cognitive load (moderator) on rape victim blame and rape perpetrator blame (used as a proxy of rape myth acceptance), and whether the degree of humanness of the victim and of the perpetrator mediated these effects. Participants (N = 142) played a video game using sexualized or non-sexualized female characters. Cognitive load was manipulated by setting the difficulty level of the game to low or high. After gameplay, participants read a rape date story, and were then asked to judge the victim’s and the perpetrator’s degree of responsibility and humanness. Based on the General Aggression Model (GAM), it was hypothesized that playing the video game with a sexualized content would increase the responsibility assigned to the victim and diminish the responsibility assigned to the perpetrator. Further, degree of humanness of the victim and the perpetrator was expected to mediate this relation. The results were partially consistent with these predictions: Playing a video game containing sexualized female characters increased rape victim blame when cognitive load was high, but did not predict degree of humanness accorded to the victim. Concerning the perpetrator, video game sexualization did not influence responsibility, but partly influenced humanness. This study concludes that video games impact on attitudes toward women and this, in part, due to its interactive nature.

The literature reported links between pornography and Rape Myths Acceptance (RMA). The most exposed participants to pornography would be desensitized by its content and minimize rape and violence against women. Studies associating cyberporn use and RMA remain scarce. Few studies have linked compulsive cyberporn use to RMA, or to attraction to particular pornographic images, or to moral incongruence related to cyberporn use. This study aimed to explore links between RMA and compulsive cyberporn including arousing pornographic styles and pornography moral perception (moral incongruence) in a cyberporn users sample. The sample comprised 1584 participants (1000 men; 557 women; 27 non-binary). Participants completed the Compulsive Internet Use Scale adapted to cyberporn use, Acceptance of Modern Myths about Sexual Aggression scale, and answered questions about their amount and frequency of use, preferences, and moral perception of pornography. We conducted Bravais-Pearson and Chi-Square correlations, k-means non-hierarchical clustering, and Student's t-test. We identified two types of cyberporn user, "low-risk" and "high-risk". Compared to the low-risk group, the high-risk group had higher rape myth acceptance scores, were more aroused by scenes depicting domination, humiliation, submission, and young people, had higher compulsive cyberporn use scores, spent more time and had more frequent use of cyberporn. Analysis showed that men in the high-risk group had a stronger negative moral perception of pornography than men in the low-risk group. We also found that some pornographic styles had stronger associations with compulsive cyberporn use and RMA. The present study provides current data on cyberporn use and its association with RMA. Cyberporn seems to be more addictive than other classic porn supports (e.g. magazines). Beyond its addictive risk, it would be linked to the highlighting of sexual performances without consideration of relationships and human encounters. The literature showed associations between cyberporn and the attitudes, beliefs, and sexual preferences of its users. Women most exposed to porn videos appear to be more likely to normalize rapes and violence against women. Research demonstrated that users of pornographic material are more likely to commit sexual assault. These observations invite us to think about Rape Myths Acceptance (RMA), sexual consent, and their place in the practices of compulsive cyberporn users. This study aimed to explore links between compulsive cyberporn use, RMA, and Relationships with Coercive Sexual Manipulation (RCSM), committed and endured, in a cyberporn users sample. The sample was constituted of 1584 participants (1000 men; 557 women; 27 non-binary). Participants were assessed using Compulsive Internet Use Scale adapted to cyberporn use, Acceptance of Modern Myths about Sexual Aggression scale, and Sexual Experiences Survey. We used Student's t-test, Bravais-Pearson simple correlations, Spearman correlations, and Mann-Whitney test. Results showed that compared to men with no committed RCSM, men with committed RCSM presented more compulsive cyberporn use and greater RMA. Women with committed RCSM presented more RMA and no difference in cyberporn use compared to women with no committed RCSM. Participants with endured RCSM did not present any difference compared to those with no endured RCSM.
