Vibration monitoring is a critical aspect of assessing the health and performance of machinery and industrial processes. This study explores the application of machine learning techniques, specifically the Random Forest (RF) classification model, to predict and classify chatter—a detrimental self-excited vibration phenomenon—during machining operations. While sophisticated methods have been employed to address chatter, this research investigates the efficacy of a novel approach to an RF model. The study leverages simulated vibration data, bypassing resource-intensive real-world data collection, to develop a versatile chatter detection model applicable across diverse machining configurations. The feature extraction process combines time-series features and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) data features, streamlining the model while addressing challenges posed by feature selection. The escalating consumption of fossil fuels has given rise to a substantial upsurge in greenhouse gas concentrations and global temperatures, which, in turn, has triggered severe climate-related consequences. The critical imperative to reduce CO 2 emissions and combat global warming has spurred extensive investigations into clean energy alternatives, with hydrogen emerging as a compelling zero-emission energy source. As a pivotal component of clean energy strategies, hydrogen requires designing compact, lightweight, and efficient storage systems. This study focuses on the development and evaluation of machine learning models for predicting the efficiency of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) in hydrogen storage, a key aspect of advancing clean energy technologies. MOFs, a class of nanoporous materials, show remarkable potential for hydrogen storage due to their high surface area and porosity. However, selecting the most suitable MOF for this application from a vast array of possible structures is a daunting task. In this context, machine learning algorithms offer an efficient alternative for predicting MOF suitability by considering their structural and chemical properties. We used ensemble learning methods, specifically Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) and Random Forest (RF), to predict hydrogen uptake of MOFs based on a dataset of 219 experimentally tested samples. Two modeling scenarios were considered: one using the entire dataset, and the other involving strategic data pre-processing, including outlier removal and feature engineering. The results demonstrate that the measures taken to refine the dataset significantly enhance the predictive performance of the developed models, reducing prediction errors and improving overall goodness of fit. Specifically, the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) values for both the LightGBM and random forest models were reduced from 0.48 and 0.94, respectively, to 0.16 for both models, and the coefficients of determination (R2) increased substantially from 0.84 and 0.72 to 0.95, in both cases. Moreover, feature importance analysis unveiled that pressure-related features make the most significant contributions to the formation of tree ensembles during the model training process. A parametric sensitivity analysis was conducted revealing that H 2 uptake in MOFs is most sensitive to changes in adsorption enthalpy, followed by surface area and temperature, while showing lower sensitivity to variations in pressure, consistent with established literature. These results underscore the pivotal role of data enhancement methods in refining machine learning models and can be instrumental in accelerating the development and optimization of MOF materials for clean energy applications. The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) is a high-resolution lidar instrument, facilitating landscape monitoring through forest structure and biomass assessments. Previous research has mainly focused on estimating forest attributes such as height and biomass from GEDI data. In this comprehensive study, we empirically investigate how Eucalyptus plantation characteristics and environmental factors collectively influence GEDI waveform metrics. Using a diverse dataset that includes measurements of canopy height, planting density, foliage characteristics, species composition, understorey presence and environmental conditions such as climate and soil properties, we explore the complex relationships between these attributes and GEDI waveform metrics using a two-step approach that includes assessing the linear relationship between each in-situ parameter and GEDI metrics, and also random forest modelling. Key findings include: 1) While canopy height (Ht) plays a significant role in shaping the GEDI waveform, forest wood volume (Volume), which incorporates height and diameter at breast height (DBH) of the trees and also tree stem density (Ntree/ha), exerts an even greater influence on GEDI metrics, in particular on the waveform extent (WE) and relative heights (RH); 2) The influence of factors such as foliage biomass and wood volume on GEDI waveform varies vertically from the forest floor up to forest top, and the model was more precise to predict the top part of the waveform; 3) No single attribute can solely account for the observed variations in the waveform characteristics, but multiple interactions between different forest and environmental features contribute to the complex patterns in the received waveforms. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between forest plantation characteristics and GEDI waveform metrics and highlights the need to consider a wide range of forest attributes in the analyse of GEDI waveform to produce more accurate canopy height or volume estimates. Hyperspectral data has a significant count of spectral channels with an enhanced spectral resolution, which provides detailed information at each pixel. This data can be used in numerous remote sensing (RS) applications, along with mineral mapping. Mineral mapping is an important component of geological mapping, which helps in investigating the mineralization potential of an area. This work can be completed effectively by applying machine learning (ML) techniques to RS data. This paper proposes a stacked ensemble-based framework for mineral mapping using the dataset obtained by the Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer-Next Generation (AVIRIS-NG). The study area is situated in Jahazpur, Rajasthan, India. The purpose of this stacked ensemble-based model is to enhance the performance of ML-based mineral mapping. The proposed stacked ensemble model consists of two major elements: a base learner (Naïve Bayes, KNN, artificial neural network, decision tree, and support vector machine) and a stacked learner (random forest). The results of the experiments show that the stacked ensemble-based model has a lot of potential for accurately mapping the minerals talc, montmorillonite, kaolionite, and kaosmec. The proposed model has obtained an overall accuracy of 98.96%, an average accuracy of 98.21%, and a Kappa coefficient of 0.9628. Precisely forecasting the levels of PM2.5 is crucial for environmental conservation and human health. Thus, it serves as an essential indicator of atmospheric purity. In this paper, a PM2.5 concentration prediction model based on random forest and SHAP is proposed using air pollutants and meteorological conditions as the characterizing factors. Initially, pertinent information is gathered and subsequently manipulated, educated, and forecasted through the application of the random forest technique. Then, SHAP is used to explain the degree of influence of each feature in the model and the prediction results. Results of the experiment demonstrate that the random forest-based PM2.5 concentration prediction model for the three cities surpass the comparison model in the RMSE, MAE, and R2 indicators. [Objective] The aims of this study are to quantitatively analyze the response of runoff and sediment yields to land use change in Fu River Watershed, and to provide scientific evidences for the planning and management of water and soil resources and ecological construction in the river basins. [Methods] The SWAT distributed hydrological model was applied. Three natural scenarios and three extreme scenarios were set up to qualify the variation of land use change during 1990 and 2010 and corresponding contribution rates to watershed runoff and sediment discharge. [Results] (1) From 1999 to 2010, the upper reaches of the watershed was dominated by woodland and grassland, comprising approximately 46% of the total watershed area. The middle and lower reaches of the watershed were primarily composed of agricultural and urban areas, with cultivated land accounting for approximately 51% of the total area. As a result of rapid urbanization, urban land and bare land expanded significantly at rates of 95.86% and 434.43%, respectively. Under the natural scenarios, the change rate of water yield was less than 5%, and the change rate of sediment yield is less than 15%. (2) SWAT model had strong applicability in Fu River Watershed, the R² and NSE values for runoff at calibration and verification periods were 0.86, 0.85 and 0.80, 0.78, respectively, and for sediment discharge were 0.68, 0.67 and 0.68, 0.43, respectively. Scenario simulation analyses illustrated the effects of specific land use types on runoff decreased in the order: woodland＞grassland＞bare land. Compared with the base period, the woodland cover scenario reduced runoff by 35.66%. Impact of different land use types on sediment yields decreased in the order: bare land＞woodland＞grassland. Compared with the base period, the bare land scenario increased the sediment yield by 56.74%, and the woodland and grassland decreased sediment yield by 43.57% and 30.04%, respectively. (3) The importance ranking results of independent variables based on random forest algorithm showed that the first three land use types affecting runoff were farmland, woodland and grassland, and the random forest weights were 2.057, 2.030 and 1.148, respectively, while grassland, farmland and woodland affected sediment yield most significantly and the random forest weights were 1.753, 1.208 and 1.003, respectively. [Conclusion] In addition to farmland, the response of runoff to forestland change is the most significant, and the response of erosion and sediment yield to grassland change is the most significant. The conversion of land use type to grassland and woodland significantly reduces water and sediment yields in the basin, while the bare land has a significant impact on sediment yield in the watershed. Terahertz waves hold significant potential for applications in wood identification, owing to their good penetration and distinctive fingerprints in wood. This study focuses on wood samples from five different Guibourtia species as the research objects. The terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is employed to acquire the spectroscopic signals of the wood samples and to extract their optical parameter data. The THz refractive indices are dimensionally reduced through principal component analysis (PCA), and three machine learning models, namely partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM), are employed to classify the wood of five different Guibourtia species. Time delays of the wood samples from five different Guibourtia species are concentrated in the range of 60–62 ps and exhibit different amplitudes in the frequency domain. Refractive indices showed significant variations within the THz band. PCA for dimensionality reduction of terahertz time-domain spectral data significantly improves the recognition rate of machine learning models. Applying PCA to the refractive index data, the RF model achieves a highest recognition rate of 96.9 % and an overall classification accuracy of 98 %. The early diagnosis of NASH disease can decrease the risk of proceeding elements and treatment costs for patients. This study aims to present an optimal combination of intelligent algorithms using advanced machine learning methods, including different feature selections and classifications based on clinical data and blood factors. In this work, collected data were from 176 patients to investigate NASH disease, and 19 features were extracted. We then sought to find the best combination of features based on different feature selection algorithms such as Feature Forward Selection (FFS), Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (MRMR), and Mutual Information (MI). Finally, we used nine classifier frameworks with different mathematical mechanisms, including random forest (RF), logistic regression (LR), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), AdaBoost, K nearest neighbors (KNN), multilayer perceptron model (MLP), support vector machine (SVM), and decision tree (DT) to estimate NASH disease. Our investigation revealed that the combination of dominant features, namely body mass index (BMI), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), Ezetimibe, lipoprotein level Lp(a), Loge(Lp(a)), total triglyceride (TG), Creatinine (Cre), HbA1c, Fibrate, and Sex, selected by the MRMR algorithm and classified by the RF method can provide the most appropriate performance based on less computation effort and maximum performance with accuracy, AUC, precision, and recall indices, which are 81.51 ± 9.35 , 82.53 ± 11.24 , 85.28 ± 9.68 , and 89.49 ± 7.92 , respectively. This study investigated the configuration of feature selection and classifier that is most suitable for classifying NASH disease based on clinical data and blood factors. The proposed intelligent algorithm based on MRMR and RF classifier can automatically diagnose NASH disease with appropriate performance and present an initial report without any further invasive methods. This paper discusses the impact of the feature input vector on the performance of dissolved gas analysis-based intelligent power transformer fault diagnosis methods. For this purpose, 22 feature vectors from traditional diagnostic methods were used as feature input vectors for four tree-based ensemble algorithms, namely random forest, tree ensemble, gradient boosted tree, and extreme gradient tree. To build the proposed diagnostics models, 407 samples were used for training and testing. For validation and comparison with the existing methods of literature, 89 samples were used. Based on the results obtained on the training and testing datasets, the best performance was achieved with feature vector 16, which consists of the gas ratios of Rogers' four ratios method and the three ratios technique. The test accuracies based on these vectors are 98.37, 96.75, 95.93, and 97.56% for the namely random forest, tree ensemble, gradient boosted tree, and extreme gradient tree algorithms, respectively. Furthermore, the performance of the methods based on best input feature was evaluated and compared with other methods of literature such as Duval triangle, modified Rogers' four ratios method, combined technique, three ratios technique, Gouda triangle, IEC 60599, NBR 7274, the clustering method, and key gases with gas ratio methods. These methods suffer from unreliability, and this is the motivation behind the current work to develop a new technique that enhances the diagnostic accuracy of transformer faults to avoid unwanted faults and outages from the network. On validating dataset, diagnostic accuracies of 92.13, 91.01, 89.89, and 91.01% were achieved by the namely random forest, tree ensemble, gradient boosted tree, and extreme gradient tree models, respectively. These diagnostic accuracies are higher than 83.15% for the clustering method, 82.02% for the combined technique, 80.90% for the modified IEC 60599, and 79.78% for key gases with gas ratios, which are the best existing methods. Even if the performance of dissolved gas analysis-based intelligent methods depends strongly on the shape of the feature vector used, this study provides scholars with a tool for choosing the feature vector to use when implementing these methods. The development of the smart grid (SG) offers a way to improve the generation of electrical energy as well as the corresponding transmission and distribution. Due to the versatile nature, the installing of SG consumes less area and time when compared to traditional grids. The major aim of SG is to provide controllability of assets and grid observability and enhance the security and performance of power system. An integration of internet of things (IoT) in smart grid ensures intelligent features with reduced human intervention, cost-effectiveness, and reliability. In order to communicate the useful information with the internet and other web applications, IoT-enabled sensors are widely utilized in the power grid system, which enables better grid management. A photovoltaic (PV) system and a high-gain integrated Luo converter are included in the IoT-based power monitoring system for the smart grid that is recommended as a result of these variables. The maximum solar power is tracked with a help of grey wolf optimized artificial neural network (GWO-ANN) which aids in enhanced operation of converter. The obtained converter output is applied to 3 ϕ grid through a 3 ϕ voltage source inverter (VSI). The parameters like temperature, intensity, converter voltage and current, and grid voltage and current are monitored by sensors and further stored in IoT webpage. The random forest (RF) classifier is used for the prediction of shortest path through which the monitored data are transmitted. In recent years, machine learning (ML) has become increasingly popular in various fields of activity. Cloud platforms have also grown in popularity, as they offer services that are more secure and accessible worldwide. In this context, cloud-based technologies emerged to support ML, giving rise to the machine learning as a service (MLaaS) concept. However, the clients accessing ML services in order to obtain classification results on private data may be reluctant to upload sensitive information to cloud. The model owners may also prefer not to outsource their models in order to prevent model inversion attacks and to protect intellectual property. The privacy-preserving evaluation of ML models is possible through multi-key homomorphic encryption (MKHE), that allows both the client data and the model to be encrypted under different keys. In this paper, we propose an MKHE evaluation method for decision trees and we extend the proposed method for random forests. Each decision tree is evaluated as a single lookup table, and voting is performed at the level of groups of decision trees in the random forest. We provide both theoretical and experimental evaluations for the proposed method. The aim is to minimize the performance degradation introduced by the encrypted model compared to a plaintext model while also obtaining practical classification times. In our experiments with the proposed MKHE random forest evaluation method, we obtained minimal (less than 0.6%) impact on the main ML performance metrics considered for each scenario, while also achieving reasonable classification times (of the order of seconds). The Internet of Things (IoT) has garnered considerable attention from academic and industrial circles as a pivotal technology in recent years. The escalation of security risks is observed to be associated with the growing interest in IoT applications. Intrusion detection systems (IDS) have been devised as viable instruments for identifying and averting malicious actions in this context. Several techniques described in academic papers are thought to be very accurate, but they cannot be used in the real world because the datasets used to build and test the models do not accurately reflect and simulate the IoT network. Existing methods, on the other hand, deal with these issues, but they are not good enough for commercial use because of their lack of precision, low detection rate, receiver operating characteristic (ROC), and false acceptance rate (FAR). The effectiveness of these solutions is predominantly dependent on individual learners and is consequently influenced by the inherent limitations of each learning algorithm. This study introduces a new approach for detecting intrusion attacks in an IoT network, which involves the use of an ensemble learning technique based on gray wolf optimizer (GWO). The novelty of this study lies in the proposed voting gray wolf optimizer (GWO) ensemble model, which incorporates two crucial components: a traffic analyzer and a classification phase engine. The model employs a voting technique to combine the probability averages of the base learners. Secondly, the combination of feature selection and feature extraction techniques is to reduce dimensionality. Thirdly, the utilization of GWO is employed to optimize the parameters of ensemble models. Similarly, the approach employs the most authentic intrusion detection datasets that are accessible and amalgamates multiple learners to generate ensemble learners. The hybridization of information gain (IG) and principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to reduce dimensionality. The study utilized a novel GWO ensemble learning approach that incorporated a decision tree, random forest, K-nearest neighbor, and multilayer perceptron for classification. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed model, two authentic datasets, namely, BoT-IoT and UNSW-NB15, were scrutinized. The GWO-optimized ensemble model demonstrates superior accuracy when compared to other machine learning-based and deep learning models. Specifically, the model achieves an accuracy rate of 99.98%, a DR of 99.97%, a precision rate of 99.94%, an ROC rate of 99.99%, and an FAR rate of 1.30 on the BoT-IoT dataset. According to the experimental results, the proposed ensemble model optimized by GWO achieved an accuracy of 100%, a DR of 99.9%, a precision of 99.59%, an ROC of 99.40%, and an FAR of 1.5 when tested on the UNSW-NB15 dataset. Background: Despite the clear clinical diagnostic criteria for necrozoospermia in andrology, the fundamental mechanisms underlying it remain elusive. This study aims to profile the lipid composition in seminal plasma systematically and to ascertain the potential of lipid biomarkers in the accurate diagnosis of necrozoospermia. It also evaluates the efficacy of a lipidomics-based random forest algorithm model in identifying necrozoospermia. Methods: Seminal plasma samples were collected from patients diagnosed with necrozoospermia (n = 28) and normozoospermia (n = 28). Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) was used to perform lipidomic analysis and identify the underlying biomarkers. A lipid functional enrichment analysis was conducted using the LION lipid ontology database. The top 100 differentially significant lipids were subjected to lipid biomarker examination through random forest machine learning model. Results: Lipidomic analysis identified 46 lipid classes comprising 1267 lipid metabolites in seminal plasma. The top five enriched lipid functions as follows: fatty acid (FA) with ≤ 18 carbons, FA with 16–18 carbons, monounsaturated FA, FA with 18 carbons, and FA with 16 carbons. The top 100 differentially significant lipids were subjected to machine learning analysis and identified 20 feature lipids. The random forest model identified lipids with an area under the curve > 0.8, including LPE(20:4) and TG(4:0_14:1_16:0). Conclusions: LPE(20:4) and TG(4:0_14:1_16:0), were identified as differential lipids for necrozoospermia. Seminal plasma lipidomic analysis could provide valuable biochemical information for the diagnosis of necrozoospermia, and its combination with conventional sperm analysis may improve the accuracy and reliability of the diagnosis. At present, the majority of techniques for assessing image quality are limited to extracting features from an image in a single space. This paper proposes a new dual-space multi-feature fusion based method for full-reference image quality assessment. This method involves simultaneously extracting features from both the YIQ and L*a*b* color spaces. First, we extract the luminance, slope, chroma, and gradient features in the spatial domain of the image to describe the salient differences in the image. Second, based on contrast sensitivity characteristics, we extract spatial frequency features in the spatial domain of the image to represent frequency differences in the image. Next, merge the features extracted in the dual space to construct a quality perception feature vector. Finally, the feature vector is input into the Random Forest model for regression prediction to obtain the predicted score of the image. Many experiments have been carried out on the four public datasets, and contrasted with other methods. The experimental confirm that the proposed method predicts image quality more accurately. We propose a random forest based estimation procedure for Quantile-Oriented Sensitivity Analysis—QOSA. In order to be efficient, a cross-validation step on the leaf size of trees is required. Our full estimation procedure is tested on both simulated data and a real dataset. Our estimators use either the bootstrap samples or the original sample in the estimation. Also, they are either based on a quantile plug-in procedure (the R-estimators) or on a direct minimization (the Q-estimators). This leads to 8 different estimators which are compared on simulations. From these simulations, it seems that the estimation method based on a direct minimization is better than the one plugging the quantile. This paper introduces an assumption-lean method that constructs valid and efficient lower predictive bounds for survival times with censored data. We build on recent work by Candès et al. (2023) , whose approach first subsets the data to discard any data points with early censoring times and then uses a reweighting technique, namely, weighted conformal inference (Tibshirani et al. 2019), to correct for the distribution shift introduced by this subsetting procedure. For our new method, instead of constraining to a fixed threshold for the censoring time when subsetting the data, we allow for a covariate-dependent and data-adaptive subsetting step, which is better able to capture the heterogeneity of the censoring mechanism. As a result, our method can lead to lower predictive bounds that are less conservative and give more accurate information. We show that in the Type-I right-censoring setting, if either the censoring mechanism or the conditional quantile of the survival time is well estimated, our proposed procedure achieves nearly exact marginal coverage, where in the latter case we additionally have approximate conditional coverage. We evaluate the validity and efficiency of our proposed algorithm in numerical experiments, illustrating its advantage when compared with other competing methods. Large-scale digital soil maps are essential for rational and sustainable land management as well as accurate fertilizer application. This study focuses on digital mapping of soil properties, namely soil organic carbon (SOC), pH, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) in Chernozem topsoil and subsoil. The study was conducted on two arable fields in the Cis-Ural forest-steppe zone of the Republic of Bashkortostan (Russia). The random forest algorithm in combination with terrain attributes and Sentinel-2A satellite data was applied for spatial prediction of soil properties. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2) were used to determine the model performance. According to the Pearson correlation, a significant positive relationship between SOC and N content was found at all sites and depths (R = 0.76–0.92). A cross-validation revealed that SOC (R2 = 0.22–0.62, RMSE = 0.35–0.89%) and N (R2 = 0.16–0.60, RMSE = 21.11–36.6 mg kg−1) were best predicted among other properties at all depths using remote sensing data, whereas the performance of predictive models decreased with depth. However, a relationship between the content of some soil properties and their spatial distribution at study depths was observed, which can be used as an additional explanatory variable. We suppose that digital mapping of soil properties at the arable field scale should not be limited to topographic and remote sensing variables. Based on this information, the use of auxiliary variables, such as collocated soil information in combination with relief and remote sensing data can be effective in more accurately estimating the spatial distribution of properties across arable fields at different depths. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into spatial modelling of the vertical distribution of soil properties, highlighting the significance of remote sensing data at the arable field scale. The findings can be valuable for land managers, agronomists, and policymakers seeking sustainable land management practices and efficient fertilizer application, as well as for developing further mapping procedures for arable fields. Early monitoring of within-field yield variability and forecasting yield potential is critical for farmers and other key stakeholders such as policymakers. Remote sensing techniques are progressively being used in yield prediction studies due to easy access and affordability. Despite the increasing use of remote sensing techniques for yield prediction in agriculture, there is still a need for medium-resolution satellite imagery when predicting canola yield using a combination of crop and soil information. In this study, we investigated the utility of remotely sensed flowering information from PlanetScope (at 4 m) satellite imagery combined with derived soil and topography parameters to predict canola yield. Our yield prediction model was trained and validated using data from 21 fields managed under variable rate seed and fertilizer application, including cleaned harvester yield maps, soil, and topography maps. To quantify the flowering intensity of canola, 9 vegetation indices (VIs) were calculated using spectral bands from PlanetScope imagery acquired for the reproductive stages of canola. We created five random forest regression models using different subsets of covariates, including VIs, soil, and topography features, to predict canola yield within the season. Using a random forest regression algorithm, we recorded accuracies ranging from poor to best performing using coefficient of determination and root mean squared error (R2: 0.47 to 0.66, RMSE: 325 to 399 kg ha−1). The optimal subset of covariates identified electrical conductivity (EC), Normalized Difference Yellowness Index, and Canola Index as the key variables explaining within-spatial variability in canola yield. Our final model exhibited a validation R2 of 0.46 (RMSE = 730 kg ha−1), demonstrating the potential of medium-resolution satellite imagery during the flowering stage to detect and quantify sub-field spatial and temporal floral phenology changes when predicting canola yield. In order to estimate the likelihood of 1, 3, 6 and 12 month mortality in patients with hip fractures, we applied a variety of machine learning methods using readily available, preoperative data. We used prospectively collected data from a single university hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark for consecutive patients with hip fractures, aged 60 years and older, treated between September 2008 to September 2010 (n = 1186). Preoperative biochemical and anamnestic data were used as predictors and outcome was survival at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after the fracture. After feature selection for each timepoint a stratified split was done (70/30) before training and validating Random Forest models, extreme gradient boosting (XGB) and Generalized Linear Models. We evaluated and compared each model using receiver operator characteristic (ROC), calibration slope and intercept, Spiegelhalter's z- test and Decision Curve Analysis. Using combinations of between 10 and 13 anamnestic and biochemical parameters we were able to successfully estimate the likelihood of mortality with an area under the curve on ROC curves of 0.79, 0.80, 0.79 and 0.81 for 1, 3, 6 and 12 month, respectively. The XGB was the overall best calibrated and most promising model. The XGB model most successfully estimated the likelihood of mortality postoperatively. An easy-to-use model could be helpful in perioperative decisions concerning level of care, focused research and information to patients. Execution of a marine operation (MO) requires coordinated actions of several vessels conducting simultaneous and sequential offshore activities. These activities have their operational limits given in terms of environmental parameters. Wave parameters are important because of their high energetic level. During the execution of a MO, forecast wave spectral parameters, i.e., significant wave height (Hs), peak period (Tp), and peak direction, are used to make an on-board decision. For critical operations, the use of forecasts can be complemented with buoy measurements. This paper proposes to use synthetic statistics of vessel dynamic responses to predict "real-time" wave spectral parameters using multi-output machine learning (ML) regression algorithms. For a case study of a vessel with no forward speed, it is observed that the random forest model predicts accurate Hs and Tp parameters. The prediction of wave direction is not very accurate but it can be corrected with on-board observations. The random forest model has good performance; it is efficient, useful for practical purposes, and comparable with other deep learning models reported in the scientific literature. With the escalating demand for underground mining and infrastructure construction, the optimization of tunnel construction has emerged as a primary concern for researchers. The geological conditions encountered during the excavation of hard rock tunnels using tunnel boring machines (TBM) significantly impact construction efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The existing lithology testing methods need to be more efficient in aligning with TBM operational efficiency. In recent years, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has paved the way for its integration into numerous domains, including tunnel engineering. To address this issue, this study proposes three innovative hybrid RF-based intelligent models, namely PSO-RF, ALO-RF, and GWO-RF, for the precise prediction of lithology in hard rock tunnels using TBM working parameters. The TBM operating parameters of the Jilin Yinsong Water Supply Project serve as the basis for this investigation. Twelve distinct characteristic parameters relevant to the lithology of the tunnel working face were carefully selected as input parameters for lithology prediction. Comparative analysis of the three hybrid models reveals that GWO-RF demonstrates exceptional lithology prediction performance (ACC = 0.999924; PREA = 0.0.9999976; RECA = 0.999775; F1A = 0.999876; Kappa = 0.999911), whereas PSO-RF and ALO-RF exhibit slightly inferior performance. Nonetheless, all three hybrid models exhibit a significant improvement in prediction accuracy compared to the unoptimized RF model. The research findings presented herein facilitate the swift determination of TBM working surface lithology, enabling timely adjustment of TBM working parameters, reducing equipment wear and tear, and enhancing construction efficiency. This paper tackles the problem of constructing a nonparametric predictor when the latent variables are given with incomplete information. The convenient predictor for this task is the random forest algorithm in conjunction to the so-called CART criterion. The proposed technique enables a partial imputation of the missing values in the data set in a way that suits both a consistent estimator of the regression function as well as a partial recovery of the missing values. The imputation is done through iterative assignation of the missing values to the tree's cells, maximising the CART criterion. Background: Life satisfaction is a key component of students' subjective well‐being due to its impact on academic achievement and lifelong health. Although previous studies have investigated life satisfaction through different lenses, few of them employed machine learning (ML) approaches. Objective: Using ML algorithms, the current study predicts secondary students' life satisfaction from individual‐level variables. Method: Two supervised ML models, random forest (RF) and k‐nearest neighbours (KNN), were developed based on the UK data and the Japan data in PISA 2018. Results: Findings show that (1) both models yielded better performance on the UK data than on the Japanese data; (2) the RF model outperformed the KNN model in predicting students' life satisfaction; (3) meaning in life, student competition, teacher support, exposure to bullying and ICT resources at home and at school played important roles in predicting students' life satisfaction. Conclusions: Theoretically, this study highlights the multi‐dimensional nature of life satisfaction and identifies several key predictors. Methodologically, this study is the first to use ML to explore the predictors of life satisfaction. Practically, it serves as a reference for improving secondary students' life satisfaction. Pavement markings are essential traffic control devices that enhance safety for motorists during nighttime. Numerous statistical learning models have been developed in prior studies to predict the retroreflectivity of the markings, but the applicability of these models is questionable in terms of accuracy. The key objective of this study was to develop a machine learning–based framework that can be used by US transportation agencies to reliably predict the retroreflectivity of their pavement markings over a period of 3 years utilizing the initially measured retroreflectivity and other key project conditions. The random forest (RF) algorithm was used in this study to develop the proposed framework considering seven types of marking materials in three different US climate zones. A total of 49,632 transverse skip retroreflectivity measurements were retrieved from the National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (NTPEP) and 11 RF models were developed to sequentially predict retroreflectivity at different prediction horizons. The models were trained with randomly selected 80% of the total data points, and the remaining 20% data points were utilized for testing the predictive performance of the developed models. The RF models predicted the retroreflectivity with a superior level of accuracy (R2 ranging between 0.88 and 0.99) than the models proposed in prior studies. Optimizing production–living–ecological space (PLES) can benefit territorial space planning and sustainable development in China. Thus, spatiotemporal evolution characteristics and influence factor analyses are vital. Laiwu, China, was selected as the study area due to its complex terrain and development history. A multitemporal land-use and land-cover classification extracted from Landsat remote-sensing images for 2001–2018 and the self-organizing map method were combined to identify the area's multitemporal PLES. The PLES evolution trajectories were extracted based on the multitemporal PLES. The main factors influencing the PLES spatiotemporal evolution differences were revealed using the random-forest-based factor importance evaluation method. The results showed that changes in the PLES trajectories occupied ∼ 18% of the study area. The ecological space recovery type was mainly observed in previously stable ecological space areas. Changes in the production space expansion (PSE) and living space expansion were mainly agglomerated in the fringe areas of previously stable production–ecological and living space lands. Distance from early built-up areas was the main factor influencing PLES expansion. Ecological space was mainly distributed far away from built-up areas, and living and production spaces were mainly distributed near the built-up areas. Additionally, the slope of the terrain affected the spatial distribution of PLES expansion to a certain extent, and the gross domestic product clearly affected the distribution of PSE. Background: Early prediction of delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) is critical to improving the prognosis of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Machine learning (ML) algorithms can learn from intricate information unbiasedly and facilitate the early identification of clinical outcomes. This study aimed to construct and compare the ability of different ML models to predict DCI after aSAH. Then, we identified and analyzed the essential risk of DCI occurrence by preoperative clinical scores and postoperative laboratory test results. Methods: This was a multicenter, retrospective cohort study. A total of 1039 post-operation patients with aSAH were finally included from three hospitals in China. The training group contained 919 patients, and the test group comprised 120 patients. We used five popular machine-learning algorithms to construct the models. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and f1 score were used to evaluate and compare the five models. Finally, we performed a Shapley Additive exPlanations analysis for the model with the best performance and significance analysis for each feature. Results: A total of 239 patients with aSAH (23.003%) developed DCI after the operation. Our results showed that in the test cohort, Random Forest (RF) had an AUC of 0.79, which was better than other models. The five most important features for predicting DCI in the RF model were the admitted modified Rankin Scale, D-Dimer, intracranial parenchymal hematoma, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, and Fisher score. Interestingly, clamping or embolization for the aneurysm treatment was the fourth button-down risk factor in the ML model. Conclusions: In this multicenter study, we compared five ML methods, among which RF performed the best in DCI prediction. Aim Materials and Methods Results Conclusions To validate the Klinrisk machine learning model for prediction of chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression in patients with type 2 diabetes in the pooled CANVAS/CREDENCE trials.We externally validated the Klinrisk model for prediction of CKD progression, defined as 40% or higher decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) or kidney failure. Model performance was assessed for prediction up to 3 years with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), Brier scores and calibration plots of observed and predicted risks. We compared performance of the model with standard of care using eGFR (G1‐G4) and urine albumin‐creatinine ratio (A1‐A3) Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) heatmap categories.The Klinrisk model achieved an AUC of 0.81 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.78‐0.83) at 1 year, and 0.88 (95% CI 0.86‐0.89) at 3 years. The Brier scores were 0.020 (0.018‐0.022) and 0.056 (0.052‐0.059) at 1 and 3 years, respectively. Compared with the KDIGO heatmap, the Klinrisk model had improved performance at every interval (P < .01).The Klinrisk machine learning model, using routinely collected laboratory data, was highly accurate in its prediction of CKD progression in the CANVAS/CREDENCE trials. In the era of Climate Change and Climate Variability (CC and CV), renewable energy sources such as Hydropower (HP) have a significant role to play in mitigation. However, inflow to reservoir which is the key fuel for HP generation is vulnerable to CC and CV. Thus, there is a need to investigate the potential impacts of CC and CV on HP systems in the future. This study attempts to assess the potential impacts of CC and CV on the Faye reservoir inflow using the Random Forest (RF) algorithm. For this purpose, bias-adjusted precipitation and temperature data of thirteen climate model outputs and their ensemble mean from Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) under three Shared Socioeconomic Pathways scenarios (SSP1-2.6; SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5) were used as predictors. The potential changes in reservoir inflows were evaluated in the near (2025–2049), mid (2050–2074) and far (2075–2099) futures relative to the reference period (1990–2014). The results show the good performance of the RF algorithm in simulating reservoir inflows with Cor > 0.6 for all models. The annual inflows to the Faye reservoir are noted to increase in the future compared to the reference period despite the potential decrease in future precipitation probably due to land use/cover change. For the ensemble mean of models, this projected increase is estimated to around 16%, 23% and 10%, respectively under the SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios for all projection periods. The largest annual increase is noted under the SSP2-4.5 scenario while the lowest increase is noted under the SSP5-8.5 scenario for all projection periods. Interspecific interactions, including predator–prey, intraguild predation (IGP) and competition, may drive distribution and habitat use of predator communities. However, elucidating the relative importance of these interactions in shaping predator distributions is challenging, especially in marine communities comprising highly mobile species. We used individual‐based models (IBMs) to predict the habitat distributions of apex predators, intraguild (IG) prey and prey. We then used passive acoustic telemetry to test these predictions in a subtropical marine predator community consisting of eight elasmobranch (i.e. shark and ray) species in Bimini, The Bahamas. IBMs predicted that prey and IG prey will preferentially select habitats based on safety over resources (food), with stronger selection for safe habitat by smaller prey. Elasmobranch space‐use patterns matched these predictions. Species with predator–prey and asymmetrical IGP (between apex and small mesopredators) interactions showed the clearest spatial separation, followed by asymmetrical IGP among apex and large mesopredators. Competitors showed greater spatial overlap although with finer‐scale differences in microhabitat use. Our study suggests space‐use patterns in elasmobranchs are at least partially driven by interspecific interactions, with stronger spatial separation occurring where interactions include predator–prey relationships or IGP. Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder that poses a substantial economic burden. The Random forest algorithm is effective in predicting AD; however, the key factors influencing AD onset remain unclear. This study aimed to analyze the key lipoprotein and metabolite factors influencing AD onset using machine-learning methods. It provides new insights for researchers and medical personnel to understand AD and provides a reference for the early diagnosis, treatment, and early prevention of AD. Methods: A total of 603 participants, including controls and patients with AD with complete lipoprotein and metabolite data from the Alzheimer's disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database between 2005 and 2016, were enrolled. Random forest, Lasso regression, and CatBoost algorithms were employed to rank and filter 213 lipoprotein and metabolite variables. Variables with consistently high importance rankings from any two methods were incorporated into the models. Finally, the variables selected from the three methods, with the participants' age, sex, and marital status, were used to construct a random forest predictive model. Results: Fourteen lipoprotein and metabolite variables were screened using the three methods, and 17 variables were included in the AD prediction model based on age, sex, and marital status of the participants. The optimal random forest modeling was constructed with "mtry" set to 3 and "ntree" set to 300. The model exhibited an accuracy of 71.01%, a sensitivity of 79.59%, a specificity of 65.28%, and an AUC (95%CI) of 0.724 (0.645–0.804). When Mean Decrease Accuracy and Gini were used to rank the proteins, age, phospholipids to total lipids ratio in intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL_PL_PCT), and creatinine were among the top five variables. Conclusions: Age, IDL_PL_PCT, and creatinine levels play crucial roles in AD onset. Machine learning approaches are increasingly being adopted as data analysis tools in scientific behavioral predictions. This paper utilizes a machine learning approach, Random Forest Model, to determine the top prediction variables of food safety behavioral changes during the pandemic. Data was collected among U.S. consumers on risk perception of COVID-19 and foodborne illness (FBI), food safety practice behaviors and demographics through online surveys at ten different time points from April 2020 through to May 2021; and post pandemic in May 2022. Random forest model was used to predict 14 food safety-related behaviors. The models for predicting Handwashing before cooking and Handwashing after eating had a good performance, with F-1 score of 0.93 and 0.88, respectively. Attitudes- related variables were determined to be important in predicting food safety behaviors. The importance ranking of the predicting variables were found to be changing over time. Breast cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer in women. Risk factor assessment can aid in directing counseling regarding risk reduction and breast cancer surveillance. This research aims to (1) investigate the relationship between various risk factors and breast cancer incidence using the BCSC (Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium) Risk Factor Dataset and create a prediction model for assessing the risk of developing breast cancer; (2) diagnose breast cancer using the Breast Cancer Wisconsin diagnostic dataset; and (3) analyze breast cancer survivability using the SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) Breast Cancer Dataset. Applying resampling techniques on the training dataset before using various machine learning techniques can affect the performance of the classifiers. The three breast cancer datasets were examined using a variety of pre-processing approaches and classification models to assess their performance in terms of accuracy, precision, F-1 scores, etc. The PCA (principal component analysis) and resampling strategies produced remarkable results. For the BCSC Dataset, the Random Forest algorithm exhibited the best performance out of the applied classifiers, with an accuracy of 87.53%. Out of the different resampling techniques applied to the training dataset for training the Random Forest classifier, the Tomek Link exhibited the best test accuracy, at 87.47%. We compared all the models used with previously used techniques. After applying the resampling techniques, the accuracy scores of the test data decreased even if the training data accuracy increased. For the Breast Cancer Wisconsin diagnostic dataset, the K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm had the best accuracy with the original dataset test set, at 94.71%, and the PCA dataset test set exhibited 95.29% accuracy for detecting breast cancer. Using the SEER Dataset, this study also explores survival analysis, employing supervised and unsupervised learning approaches to offer insights into the variables affecting breast cancer survivability. This study emphasizes the significance of individualized approaches in the management and treatment of breast cancer by incorporating phenotypic variations and recognizing the heterogeneity of the disease. Energy consumption plays an important role in contemporary economies. Its significance extends beyond utilitarian value, impacting economic robustness, environmental protection, and residents' well-being. The escalating global energy requisites necessitate efficient energy utilization and a shift towards renewable sources to address climate change and strengthen energy independence. Developing accurate predictive models to forecast long-term energy costs and savings remains a complex problem. This paper aims to provide a methodology to identify the influence of building energy performance on real estate market efficiency, focusing on property maintenance costs. Real estate plays a crucial role in human life, serving both as a fundamental need and as a vehicle for achieving personal aspirations and secure financial investments, particularly during times of economic and social instability. Through interdisciplinary methodological architecture, this study addresses three key issues: the impact of rising energy costs on market efficiency, the responsiveness of the real estate market to energy price fluctuations, and the significance of property maintenance costs on market value. The research approach includes creating and applying AI algorithms capable of evaluating extensive datasets pertaining to real estate features. Utilizing machine learning methods, the algorithm determines the importance of energy efficiency measures as well as various other inherent and external attributes of properties. Wetlands are integral components of agricultural landscapes, providing a wide range of ecological, economic, and social benefits essential for sustainable development and rural livelihoods. Globally, they are vulnerable ecological assets facing several significant threats including water extraction and regulation, land clearing and reclamation, and climate change. Classification and mapping of wetlands in agricultural landscapes is crucial for conserving these ecosystems to maintain their ecological integrity amidst ongoing land-use changes and environmental pressures. This study aims to establish a robust framework for wetland classification and mapping in intensive agricultural landscapes using time series of Sentinel-2 imagery, with a focus on the Gwydir Wetland Complex situated in the northern Murray–Darling Basin—Australia's largest river system. Using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, we extracted two groups of predictors based on six vegetation indices time series calculated from multi-temporal Sentinel-2 surface reflectance (SR) imagery: the first is statistical features summarizing the time series and the second is phenological features based on harmonic analysis of time series data (HANTS). We developed and evaluated random forest (RF) models for each level of classification with combination of different groups of predictors. Our results show that RF models involving both HANTS and statistical features perform strongly with significantly high overall accuracy and class-weighted F1 scores (p < 0.05) when comparing with models with either statistical or HANTS variables. While the models have excellent performance (F-score greater than 0.9) in distinguishing wetlands from other landcovers (croplands, terrestrial uplands, and open waters), the inter-class discriminating power among wetlands is class-specific: wetlands that are frequently inundated (including river red gum forests and wetlands dominated by common reed, water couch, and marsh club-rush) are generally better identified than the ones that are flooded less frequently, such as sedgelands and woodlands dominated by black box and coolabah. This study demonstrates that HANTS features extracted from time series Sentinel data can significantly improve the accuracy of wetland mapping in highly fragmentated agricultural landscapes. Thus, this framework enables wetland classification and mapping to be updated on a regular basis to better understand the dynamic nature of these complex ecosystems and improve long-term wetland monitoring. The West Sahel is facing significant threats to its vegetation and wildlife due to the land degradation and habitat fragmentation. It is crucial to assess the regional vegetation greenness dynamics in order to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of protection in the natural reserves. This study analyzes the vegetation greenness trends and the driving factors in the Dosso Partial Faunal Reserve in Niger and nearby unprotected regions—one of the most important habitats for endemic African fauna—using satellite time series data from 2001 to 2020. An overall vegetation browning trend was observed throughout the entire region with significant spatial variability. Vegetation browning dominated in the Dosso Reserve with 17.7% of the area showing a significant trend, while the area with significant greening was 6.8%. In a comparison, the nearby unprotected regions to the north and the east were found to be dominated by vegetation browning and greening, respectively. These results suggest that the vegetation protection practice was not fully effective throughout the Dosso Reserve. The dominant drivers were also diagnosed using the Random Forest model-based method and the Partial Dependence Plot tool, showing that water availability (expressed as soil moisture) and land use/land cover change were the most critical factors affecting vegetation greenness in the study region. Specifically, soil moisture stress and specific land management practices associated with logging, grazing, and land clearing appeared to dominate vegetation browning in the Dosso Reserve. In contrast, the vegetation greening in the central Dosso Reserve and the nearby unprotected region to the east was probably caused by the increase in shrubland/forest, which was related to the effective implementation of protection. These findings improve our understanding of how regional vegetation greenness dynamics respond to environmental changes in the Dosso Reserve and also highlight the need for more effective conservation planning and implementation to ensure sustainable socio-ecological development in the West Sahel. The transboundary region along the Heilongjiang River, encompassing the Russian Far East and Northeast China, possesses abundant agricultural natural resources crucial for global food security. In the face of the challenge of disruptions in the global food supply chain, the precise monitoring and exploitation of agricultural resources in the Heilongjiang Basin becomes imperative. This study employed deep learning to classify crop status in 2023 in the Heilongjiang Basin using Sentinel-2 satellite remote sensing images at a 10 m resolution. Various vegetation indices, including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), the Modified Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (MSAVI), and others, were computed and analyzed for different crops. The Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform was utilized for validation point sampling based on plot objects. The random forest (RF) classification method was successfully employed to classify and identify major crops in the study area (wheat, maize, rice, and soybean), as well as wetlands, tree cover, grassland, water, and constructed land, with an overall classification accuracy of 86%. Tree cover dominated the land cover, constituting 62%, while wheat, maize, rice, and soybeans accounted for 7% of the total area. Of these, soybeans occupied the largest area (57,646.60 hectares), followed by rice (53,209.53 hectares), maize (39,998.37 hectares), and wheat (8782.31 hectares). This study demonstrated that sample selection based on plot objects facilitates efficient sample labeling, providing insights into crop classification in other, potentially larger, areas. Background Objectives Methods Results and Conclusions This study aims to assess how well several machine learning (ML) algorithms predict the physical, social, and mental health condition of university students.The physical health measurements used in the study include BMI (Body Mass Index), %BF (percentage of Body Fat), BSC (Blood Serum Cholesterol), SBP (Systolic Blood Pressure), and DBP (Diastolic Blood Pressure).The mental health evaluation relied on the following methods: PHQ‐9 (Patient Health Questionnaire‐9), ISI (Insomnia Severity Index), GAD‐7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale), and SBQ‐R (Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire‐Revised). The study assessed KEYES, the comprehensive social health indicator. The study uses a famous methodology for training and testing four well‐known ML algorithms, namely the K‐nearest neighbors algorithm, decision trees, Naïve Bayes, and the random forest algorithm.The recall value of the RF algorithm is higher by 2.0%, 4.15%, and 11.25%, respectively. The F‐score value of the RF algorithm is also the highest. The differences amount to 4.56% (Naïve Bayes), 2.50% (DT), and 11.20% (K‐NN). Accuracy, Precision, Recall, and F‐score were used to assess the researched ML algorithms' prediction ability. With a 99.40% prediction accuracy, a 97.60% precision, a 99.30% recall, and an F‐score value of 98.70%, the Random Forest method performed the best. ML algorithms can serve as tools for the prediction of physical, mental, and social health state of patients, including students, but they have a rather narrow scope of application and do not cover all aspects of health. Tropospheric delay constitutes a primary source of error in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) navigation positioning. Existing machine learning zenith wet delay (ZWD) models have limitations in their feature extraction capabilities. To address these limitations, we propose a ZWD (CNN_ZWD) model which is built upon observation data collected from 88 radiosonde (RS) stations in China from 2015 to 2017, employing the one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) deep learning method. The accuracy of the CNN_ZWD model is validated using the 2018 RS data and is compared with other models. The results reveal that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the 1D-CNN-based empirical model CNN_ZWD-A is 4.29 cm. This marks a 0.17 cm (3.81 %) improvement over the machine learning empirical models based on the random forest (RF) and back propagation neural network (BPNN) and a 0.70 cm (14.03 %) enhancement over the GPT3 empirical model. Moreover, when meteorological data is available at the station, the meteorological parameterized CNN_ZWD-B model has an RMSE of 2.69 cm. Its precision closely matches that of the RF_ZWD-D model and slightly exceeds the BP_ZWD-F model (RMSE: 2.85 cm). Remarkably, compared to the conventional Saastamoinen (Saa_ZWD) model, our proposed model demonstrates a 32.24 % increase in accuracy. This underscores that incorporating surface meteorological parameters into the functional formulation can significantly enhance the accuracy of regional ZWD prediction in China. Furthermore, compared with the empirical model, the predictive accuracy of the meteorological parameterized ZWD model based on the 1D-CNN exhibits significant improvement, particularly in China's monsoon climate region. Summary Ensuring the freshness of fish is essential to guaranteeing safer products for consumers. A classification model was developed using the PEN3 electronic nose to predict fish freshness with its storage day. Frigate tuna (Auxis thazard) was used for odour sampling along with the total volatile base nitrogen (TVB‐N), at 4 °C for 14 days every other day. Random forest and support vector machine (SVM) were performed to develop freshness classification models based on PEN3 data and 100% and 99.8% accuracies were obtained, respectively, in distinguishing the eight storage day classes. The PEN3 sensors including W2S, W1S, W1W, W3S, and W6S were identified as key sensors for fish freshness. TVB‐N analysis advances the freshness prediction of e‐nose and three freshness levels were identified as ‘Fresh’, applicable from the 0th to the 6th day; ‘Moderately fresh’, lasting from the 7th to the 9th day; and ‘Unsuitable for consumption’, applicable from the 10th day onwards. Efficient discrimination of diverse kharif crops, remains crucial for crop monitoring and production forecasting, and plays a pivotal role in decision-making for food security in India. This study aims to harness temporal backscatter data from EOS-04 C-band synthetic aperture data (SAR) payload to achieve precise discrimination among six short-duration (cereal, oilseeds, fibre) and long-duration (fibre, pulses) kharif crops. The study integrates limited ground-truth polygons and a Random Forest machine learning approach for analysing EOS-04 time-series data. The classification accuracies were found to be higher than 75% across all kharif crops, with cereals exhibiting the highest accuracy, succeeded by fibre, oilseed and pulse crops. A key focus lies in identifying optimal polarization combinations for effective discrimination among diverse kharif crop types. The study reveals that the synergistic utilization of dual polarizations outperforms individual co- or cross-polarizations, notably benefiting discrimination of cotton, soybean and groundnut crops. Horizontal–vertical polarizations are found to be most effective for achieving peak accuracies in rice and red gram crops. Furthermore, the analysis indicates a promising potential for early crop assessment, presenting an opportunity to furnish precise crop estimates at least one and a half months before the harvest. The goal is to enhance an automated sleep staging system's performance by leveraging the diverse signals captured through multi-modal polysomnography recordings. Three modalities of PSG signals, namely electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram (EOG), and electromyogram (EMG), were considered to obtain the optimal fusions of the PSG signals, where 63 features were extracted. These include frequency-based, time-based, statistical-based, entropy-based, and non-linear-based features. We adopted the ReliefF (ReF) feature selection algorithms to find the suitable parts for each signal and superposition of PSG signals. Twelve top features were selected while correlated with the extracted feature sets' sleep stages. The selected features were fed into the AdaBoost with Random Forest (ADB + RF) classifier to validate the chosen segments and classify the sleep stages. This study's experiments were investigated by obtaining two testing schemes: epoch-wise testing and subject-wise testing. The suggested research was conducted using three publicly available datasets: ISRUC-Sleep subgroup1 (ISRUC-SG1), sleep-EDF(S-EDF), Physio bank CAP sleep database (PB-CAPSDB), and S-EDF-78 respectively. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have garnered significant attention from both the academic and industrial communities. However, the limited battery capacity of WSN nodes imposes a set of restrictions on energy dissipations, which has compelled researchers to seek ways to save and minimize energy consumption. This paper presents a hybrid optimization model to minimize energy dissipation in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Employing linear programming and a combination of XGBoost and Random Forest algorithms, it effectively predicts internode distances and network lifetime. The results demonstrate significant energy savings in WSN deployments, outperforming traditional methods. This approach contributes to the field by offering a practical, energy-efficient strategy for WSN configuration planning, highlighting the model’s applicability in real-world scenarios, where energy conservation is critical. In this study, an early warning system predicting first‐year undergraduate student academic performance is developed for higher education institutions. The significant factors that affect first‐year student success are derived and discussed such that they can be used for policy developments by related bodies. The dataset used in experimental analyses includes 11,698 freshman students' data. The problem is constructed as classification models predicting whether a student will be successful or unsuccessful at the end of the first year. A total of 69 input variables are utilized in the models. Naive Bayes, decision tree and random forest algorithms are compared over model prediction performances. Random forest models outperformed others and reached 90.2% accuracy. Findings show that the models including the fall semester CGPA variable performed dramatically better. Moreover, the student's programme name and university placement exam score are identified as the other most significant variables. A critical discussion based on the findings is provided. The developed model may be used as an early warning system, such that necessary actions can be taken after the second week of the spring semester for students predicted to be unsuccessful to increase their success and prevent attrition. Tiroit kanseri, 2020'deki sonuçlara göre, tüm kanserlerin küresel insidansının %3'üne karşılık gelirken bazı ülkelerde son 30 yılda önemli ölçüde artmıştır. Tiroit nodülü, tiroit bezinin içinde bulunan bir lezyondur. Bu lezyonların kanserli olma olasılığı önemli bir endişe kaynağıdır. USG ile saptanan nodüller 1 cm'den büyük ve kötü huylu olma (Malignant) açısından kuşkuluysa, ince iğne aspirasyon (İİA) biyopsisi kullanılır ve değerlendirmeler yapılır. İyi huylu İİA sonuçları, gereksiz tiroit ameliyatlarının önlenmesine yardımcı olur. Kötü huylu (Malign) hücreler tespit edilirse, İİA sonucu cerrahi stratejinin belirlenmesinde etkin bir faktör olur. Buna rağmen, cerrahlar kötü huylu hücre potansiyeline ilişkin belirsizlik nedeniyle, çok yüksek oranda iyi huylu (Benign) tiroit dokusu rezeke etmektedirler. Bu nedenle, daha doğru sonuçlar veren ve cerrahi işlem gerektirmeyen (non-invasive) tekniklere ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, tiroit dokusu çok fazla rezeke edilmeden, hastanın verileri üzerinden makine öğrenmesi metotlarından biri olan Lojistik regresyon kullanarak, kesine yakın tanının elde edilmesidir. Bu çalışma ile hastaların test sonuçlarını kullanarak, nodülün kötü huylu (kanserli) olup olmadığını tahmin eden bir model üzerinde denemeler yaptık. Gerçekte kanserli olmadığı halde operasyon geçiren hasta sayısı üzerinde spesifik olarak yoğunlaşarak özgüllük (specificity) analizi yaptık. While thyroid cancer accounts for 3% of the global incidence of all cancers, according to results in 2020, it has increased significantly in some countries over the last 30 years. The possibility that the thyroid nodule is cancerous is a significant concern. If nodules detected by USG are larger than 1 cm and are suspicious for malignancy, they are evaluated with fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy. Benign FNA results help prevent thyroid surgeries. If malignant cells are detected, it becomes an effective factor in the surgical decision. Surgeons resect a very high percentage of benign thyroid tissue due to uncertainty regarding the potential for malignant cells. Therefore, techniques that provide more accurate results and do not require surgical procedures are needed. The aim of this study is to obtain a near-definitive diagnosis by using Logistic regression, one of the machine learning methods, on the patient's data, without resecting the thyroid tissue too much. In this study, we experimented with a model that predicts whether the nodule is malignant (cancerous) or not, using the test results of the patients. We conducted a specificity analysis by focusing specifically on the number of patients who underwent surgery even though they did not have cancer. Traditional rainfall-runoff modeling techniques require large datasets and often an exhaustive calibration process, which is challenging, especially in poorly-gauged basins and resource-limited settings. Therefore, it is necessary to examine new ways of constructing predictive models for runoff that can achieve satisfactory results, while also minimizing the data requirement and model construction time. In this study, the effectiveness of integrating the Random Forest (RF) as an important feature identifier with novel gradient boosted trees to achieve satisfactory results was examined for two adjacent catchments in Vietnam. Antecedent daily runoff in combination with daily and one-day antecedent rainfall was found to significantly influence the runoff at the outlet of the catchments. Categorical Boosting (CatBoost) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) were effective in predicting day-ahead runoff. For instance, CatBoost with NSE, d, r, and R2 values of 0.92, 0.98, 0.96, and 0.92, respectively, and XGBoost with NSE, d, r, and R2 values of 0.91, 0.98, 0.96, and 0.92, respectively, are well suited for predicting runoff. A comparative analysis of their results with previous studies revealed that the models were very effective since they were able to better reduce generalization errors at different calibration and validation phases. This study presents the integration of RF and gradient boosted trees as a simplified alternative to computationally expensive and data-intensive physically-based rainfall-runoff models. The practitioners can build upon the experimentation presented in this study to minimize the computational time requirement, construction process complexity, and data requirement, which are often serious constraints in physically-based rainfall-runoff modeling. This study estimates both hourly and daily Downward Surface Solar Radiation (SSR) in Istanbul while determining the importance of variables on SSR using tree-based machine learning methods, namely Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), and Gradient Boosted Regression Tree (GBRT). The hourly and daily data of climatic factors for the period between January 2016 and December 2020 are gathered from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts' (ECMWF) ERA5 reanalysis data sets. In addition to the meteorology data, hourly data of selected aerosols are obtained from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. Temperature, cloud coverage, ozone level, precipitation, pressure, and two components of wind speeds, PM10, PM2.5, and SO2 are utilized to train and test the established models. The model performances are determined with the out-of-bag errors by calculating R-squared, MSE, RMSE, and MBE. The GBRT model is found to be the most accurate model with the lowest error rates. Furthermore, this study provides the variable importance in determining the SSR. Although all models provide different values for the variable importance; temperature, ozone level, cloud coverage, and precipitation are found to be the most important variables in estimating daily SSR. For the hourly estimation, the time of day (hour) becomes the most important factor in addition to temperature, ozone level, and cloud coverage. Finally, this study shows that the tree-based machine learning methods used with these variables to estimate hourly and daily SSR results are very accurate when it is not possible to measure the SSR values directly. Predicting whether a compound can cause drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is difficult due to the complexity of drug mechanism. The cysteine trapping assay is a method for detecting reactive metabolites that bind to microsomes covalently. However, it is cumbersome to use 35S isotope-labeled cysteine for this assay. Therefore, we constructed an in silico classification model for predicting a positive/negative outcome in the cysteine trapping assay. We collected 475 compounds (436 in-house compounds and 39 publicly available drugs) based on experimental data performed in this study, and the composition of the results showed 248 positives and 227 negatives. Using a Message Passing Neural Network (MPNN) and Random Forest (RF) with extended connectivity fingerprint (ECFP) 4, we built machine learning models to predict the covalent binding risk of compounds. In the time-split dataset, AUC-ROC of MPNN and RF were 0.625 and 0.559 in the hold-out test, restrictively. This result suggests that the MPNN model has a higher predictivity than RF in the time-split dataset. Hence, we conclude that the in silico MPNN classification model for the cysteine trapping assay has a better predictive power. This study examines urban fire incidents in Austin, Texas using machine learning (Random Forest) and time series (Autoregressive integrated moving average, ARIMA) methods for predictive modeling. Based on a dataset from the City of Austin Fire Department, it addresses the effectiveness of these models in predicting fire occurrences and the influence of fire types and urban district characteristics on predictions. The findings indicate that ARIMA models generally excel in predicting most fire types, except for auto fires. Additionally, the results highlight the significant differences in model performance across urban districts, indicating an impact of local features on fire incidence prediction. The research offers insights into temporal patterns of specific fire types, which can provide useful input to urban planning and public safety strategies in rapidly developing cities. Objective To establish a screening model for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods By using the method of multi-stage stratified random sampling, 4 587 permanent residents 3 40 years old in Guizhou Province were investigated by questionnaire, physical examination, and pulmonary function examination. Variables to be included into the model were screened by univariate analysis and then further screened by multivariate Logistic regression. Logistic regression (LR), random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) were used to construct the screening model of COPD patients, and the area under the curve (AUC) was used to evaluate the effect of the modeL Delong method was used to test the difference of AUC between models. Results According to the results of multivariate Logistic regression analysis, age, frequent cough before 14 years old, asthma, daily smoking, cooking fuel and exhaust, and harmful gas exposure were included in LR, RF and SVM models. The AUC of the three model training sets were 73.64%, 87.14%, and 73.30%, respectively, and the AUC of the test set were 76,10%, 70.96%, and 76.08%, respectively, all of which had good screening results. The results of Delong method showed that the screening effects of the three models were different between the training set and the test set. With the continuous improvement of shale oil and gas recovery technologies and achievements, a large amount of geological information and data have been accumulated for the description of shale reservoirs, and it has become possible to use machine learning methods for "sweet spots" prediction in shale oil and gas areas. Taking the Duvernay shale oil and gas field in Canada as an example, this paper attempts to build recoverable shale oil and gas reserve prediction models using machine learning methods and geological and development big data, to predict the distribution of recoverable shale oil and gas reserves and provide a basis for well location deployment and engineering modifications. The research results of the machine learning model in this study are as follows: ① Three machine learning methods were applied to build a prediction model and random forest showed the best performance. The R2 values of the built recoverable shale oil and gas reserves prediction models are 0.7894 and 0.8210, respectively, with an accuracy that meets the requirements of production applications; ② The geological main controlling factors for recoverable shale oil and gas reserves in this area are organic matter maturity and total organic carbon (TOC), followed by porosity and effective thickness; the main controlling factor for engineering modifications is the total proppant volume, followed by total stages and horizontal lateral length; ③ The abundance of recoverable shale oil and gas reserves in the central part of the study area is predicted to be relatively high, which makes it a favorable area for future well location deployment.
