Abstract

Based on a bibliographic review combined with the consultation of colonial resources, this article presents a state of play regarding the ranchera society. Starting from the analysis of the historical, sociological and anthropological approaches to this sector of the Mexican community, the question arises as to whether the ranchera society has a specific worldview. The basis of the said system of thought is explored through the theological principles that guided the evangelization, by the Augustinians and Franciscans, in the 16th Century. The proposal is that the ranchero ethos was founded on the notions of property/domestication, which were inherited from colonial thought. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Despite recording over one hundred songs and earning the moniker "la reina de los mariachis" (the queen of mariachis), very little is known about the life and career of the Mexican ranchera singer Lucha Reyes (1906-1944). In this article, we examine why her achievements are overlooked and often excluded in accounts that celebrate Mexico's most prized entertainers. Drawing on analyses of her musical performances in film and audio recordings, in combination with newspaper articles, magazine stories, and biographic accounts, we contend that Reyes was marginalized because she visually and vocally violated the gender norms of the period, queered the ranchera genre, and challenged the heteronormative contours of mexicanidad (Mexicanness). For these reasons, Reyes's influence in music culture has not been adequately valorized and has regularly been positioned in the margins of Mexican historiography. Instead, it was her male contemporaries, including Jorge Negrete, José Alfredo Jiménez, and Pedro Infante, who were credited with shaping and popularizing the canción ranchera. We analyze these exclusionary dynamics, consider Reyes's contributions to Mexican music, and highlight her continuing significance on Mexicana and Chicana entertainers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Theodor Adorno, and Edward Said after him, theorized late style as a discrepant musical orientation at odds with what is expected, desired, or current. Late work is musical work formulated by an older subject that refuses to retire quietly and with docility. While Adorno and Said discuss Classical-period music, the author is interested in engaging this concept in thinking about the recalcitrant rancheras and boleros of a lesbian, migrant, and aged musical performer of the early twenty-first century, Chavela Vargas (1919–2012). She examines a couple of Vargas' last works, Cupaima (2006) and ¡Por mi |Culpa! (2010), paying particular attention to how her aesthetic choices continue to de-form the classic repertoire of rancheras and boleros. The entwining of beloved, familiar lyrics and melodies with details that recall invisible and hyper-visible subjects, namely migrants and indigenous communities, result in unexpected, repellent musicality. Inspired by feminist and queer theory, the author examines how her later body of work conveys an unbearable sonic assessment of contemporary struggles of those unwelcome, despised, and outside neo-liberal chronology. Abstract

An essay is presented on the gendered rhetorics and conflicting cultural narratives imbedded in the ranchera song. It analyzes the aural, visual, and written rhetoric as well as the patriarchal and nationalistic nature of the ranchera music which encourage students to examine their relationship to a social text. The author states that music provide students a deeper understanding of the complex world which can lead to critical subjectivity and the negotiation of conflicting cultural rhetorics.

Utah's Spanish-speaking population is as diverse in history, heritage, and traditions as the nations which comprise the Western Hemisphere. This diversity is reflected in the Hecho en Utah series of three compact discs featuring music of Utah residents, including those from 1) the Latin American countries of the Caribbean and South America, 2) Mexico, and 3) Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado-regions where Spanish was spoken before they became part of the United States. Although much of this music originated in foreign countries, it has crossed national boundaries to become a part of Utah's heritage. Likewise musical boundaries between pure folk, ethnic, and popular music have become less distinct. as the influences of modern American lifestyles blend the old with the new. Consequently this music is in as much transition as the cultural communities that produce it. and these recordings are dramatic proof that Utah is a vibrant part of Spanish-speaking America. The Hecho en Utah series of recordings includes three volumes originally produced on cassette in 1992. This groundbreaking project showed in depth the diversity of Utah's Spanish-speaking communities and the talent of local musicians who play traditional musical styles of their heritage. Those timeless recordings are now available on compact disc.
