X-rays have a wide range of applications due to their ability to visualise the internal structure of bodies and objects. As well as diagnosing many medical conditions such as bones, internal organs and teeth, it is used in industry for quality control and materials testing, and for security checks in places such as airports and shopping centres. In addition, in the field of art, some artists offer innovative approaches with technological preferences such as X-rays for aesthetic expression. The use of X-rays in art is realised in two ways. Firstly, it is used for purposes such as dating by penetrating to the lower layers of artworks, determining the origin, originality and possible damage in the work, and determining the materials used. Secondly, X-rays are used directly for visual expression, allowing the final image to emerge. This research focuses on the use of Xrays in the field of art and is based on literature review on the subject. The aim of the research is to examine the role and impact of X-rays in the field of art and to analyse innovations in this field in the context of the relationship between art and technology. X-rays, and with them the curiosity about what lies behind the visible, allow for interaction between radiologists and artists working in different disciplines. The research findings indicate that among radiologists, there are those who use X-rays not only for medical diagnosis and treatment but also for various purposes such as taking artistic photographs. On the other hand, some artists use the technical characteristics of X-rays to focus on the aesthetic qualities, composition and tonal values of radiological images, as well as their symbolic, conceptual or emotional meaning. Aim: The late elderly, are the leading group of non-survivors infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Computed tomography (CT) imaging has been recognized as an important diagnostic method for COVID-19. This study aimed to determine the prognostic performance of CT imaging in patients above 75 years old. Material and Methods: After meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria 56 elderly patients, 28 male, and 28 female were included in the study. Two radiologists interpreted CT imaging and a third experienced radiologist was in charge of reviewing the data and imaging findings in the controversial and disagreement cases. The lung score was determined for each patient, and radiologic signs were also examined. Results: The mean age of the patients was 81.4±5.0 years. Thirty-six patients survived, and 20 did not. 28 (50.0%) patients had central involvement, while 25 (44.6%) patients had diffuse involvement. Radiologic signs such as consolidation and air bronchogram were more common among non-survivors than survivors (both p=0.001). The mean lung score for the survivors was 8.75±6.21 and 13.45±6.41 for non-survivors, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (p=0.010). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for a cut-off score of 12 was 0.714 (95% CI, 0.577 to 0.827, p=0.003). Conclusion: It seems that using lung scores can play a very important role in predicting the condition of hospitalized patients over 75 years old.

AIM Fungal sinusitis is a disease that was previously considered a rare disease, but has recently been reported with increasing frequency in warm climates. Fungal sinusitis classification has evolved over the past two decades and is said to include five subtypes. Discrimination of different subtypes and knowing their radiological features are important for accurate and rapid diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment. In our study, we aimed to investigate whether there is a difference between the radiological findings of AFS with a newly defined finding that may help the diagnosis of AFS; serrated turbinate and those reported in the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS Our study included 120 patients who underwent paranasal sinus computed tomography examination in our center between January 2019 and September 2021. Patients diagnosed with AFS as a result of allergic tests and/or fungal culture examinations were included in the first group, and patients diagnosed with non-AFS rhinosinusitis were included in the second group. Presence of serrated turbinate appearence, polyps, bone erosion, CT hyperdensity were evaluated in the images. RESULTS The radiological features of AFS and non-AFS were compaired and serrated turbinate appearence was found to be statistically signifant in AFS (p0.05). CONCLUSION Our findings showed that serrated turbinate appearence may be a useful radiological marker in the diagnosis of AFS. Bone erosion should be evaluated seperately from other morphological and structural changes in the bone structure, and the bone density measurements should be specified for sinus opacification.

BONE regeneration , *STEM cells , *BONE cells , *STEM cell culture , *MESENCHYMAL stem cells , *RATS - Abstract
Stem cell approaches has been increasing in the conventional medicine. This study was planned to determinate the efficacy of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) on the bone fracture's regeneration by histologically, morphologically and radiologically. Primarily isolated cells were cultivated and identified for the obtaining of the third passage mesenchymal stem cells in the cell culture laboratory. The right tibias (applicated ADSCs) were planned as experimental group and the left tibias were studied as control on the clinically healthy 10 rats. The middle diaphysis of the right and left tibias was transversally cut by a thin saw and then fixed by intramedullary pin. Before surgical closure of the incised area, 106 ADSCs were injected on an absorbent material, which covered the cut site of the right tibia, in experimental group. At postoperative 45th day, cranio-caudal and lateral radiographs of the tibias pointed out that there was callus formation in the caudal and lateral parts of the right tibia. After sacrification of the animals, preparations were made for histological examinations. The results indicate that there were clear differences in the mitotic activity; and also, the experimental tibias were found to be rich in blood vessel network. As a conclusion, it was found that ADSCs can have a positive potential effect on osteogenesis in bone tissue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POLYCYSTIC kidney disease , *CYSTIC kidney disease , *MAGNETIC resonance imaging , *BILE ducts , *GLOMERULAR filtration rate , *KIDNEY diseases - Abstract
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common hereditary kidney disease, characterized by progressive cystic growth of the kidneys and impaired kidney function. ADPKD is a multisystemic disease and as the disease progresses, its effects are seen in other organs. Radiological imaging is critical for ADPKD diagnosis and the follow-up of treatment efficacy. Our aim in this study is to evaluate renal and extrarenal abdominal findings in ADPKD with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In addition, the relationship between MRI findings and clinical and laboratory data has been investigated. In the study, 36 patients over the age of 18 who underwent abdominal MRI between January 2020 and November 2021 have been examined. The mean total kidney volume (TBV) was 113.8±842.2 mL (range, 326.5 - 4498.6 mL). Hemorrhagic cysts were detected in the kidney in 22 patients (61%). There was at least one cyst in the liver of 31 patients (86.1%). Common bile duct dilatation was detected in 11 patients (30.6%). We found a statistically significant correlation between TBV and glomerular filtration rate, creatinine levels, common bile duct dilatation and abdominal/flank pain. In conclusion, MRI provides useful information in the evaluation of renal and extrarenal findings related to ADPKD and can be used effectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CORONAVIRUS diseases , *COVID-19 , *SARS-CoV-2 , *PATHOGENESIS , *EARLY diagnosis , *MEDICAL personnel - Abstract
The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which was accepted as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020, has affected millions of people all over the world and caused deaths. Examining the pathophysiology of radiological lesions is perhaps the key in understanding this endless disease for which early diagnosis is crucial due to its high contagiousness. Considering that individuals with mild or even asymptomatic COVID-19 can significantly increase the transmission in the society, early diagnosis is crucial in the fight against the pandemic. Although RT-PCR is the first method of choice for diagnosis, when the studies are reviewed, imaging methods that provide faster results in diagnosis come to the fore, especially in clinically severe cases, since RT-PCR and lung imaging do not have a clear advantage over each other and even they help in diagnosis. At this point, understanding the pathogenesis of these pathological formations detected on imaging may play a key role in this broad disease. In this article, the background pathophysiology of radiological imaging, which is important to us, clinicians, has been discussed in the light of the current Iiterature review. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OSTEONECROSIS , *DIVING instruction , *BODY mass index , *COMPRESSED air - Abstract
Introduction: It is important for professional divers and candidates to be medically and physically fit to undertake their underwater work safely. This study aimed to review the screening of dysbaric osteonecrosis (DON) using conventional radiography, which has been stated in the legislation as part of fitness-to-dive examinations, in terms of international standards and scientific facts. Methods: Data on clinical, demographic, laboratory, and radiological evaluations were retrospectively collected for 46 professional divers or candidates who were referred for fitness- to-dive examinations between 2018 and 2020. The approach of the Professional Divers Regulation to DON was compared with that of the Military Health Regulation for the Turkish Armed Forces and the Turkish Underwater Sports Federation Equipped Diving Instruction, as well as that of the legislation of United Kingdom and European Diving Technology Committee standards. Results: Forty-six divers (males: n=45; female: n=1) were enrolled in the study. Their median age was 34 (range: 18-63) years, and the mean body mass index was 25.42 kg/m2 . The prevalence of DON was 2.17% in the study group. Compared with the national and international legislations, Professional Diver Regulation was the only regulation that mandated radiological evaluation for DON in both the initial and periodic fitness-to-dive examinations. Conclusion: One of the aims of regulations is that medical fitness-to-dive standards should be evidence-based and compatible with contemporaneous clinical practice. By the 2000s, attitudes toward DON, fitness to continue diving, and compressed air work have changed in Europe. In light of the findings of the present study, we believe that it is time for a critical reappraisal of the Professional Divers Regulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a viral infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, it behaves like diffuse microthromboembolism and immune complex vasculitis and affects all systems. It usually presents with acute respiratory tract infection symptoms such as fever, weakness, fatigue, cough and myalgia, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, anorexia and diarrhea. Although the disease is mostly seen in adults, pediatric forms defined as multisystemic inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) have also been described. Radiological findings of abdominal involvement are less known due to the clinical predominance of lung involvement. Although the clinical course is more serious in cases with abdominal involvement, successful results are obtained with effective treatment. Therefore, knowing the radiological aspects of abdominal involvement in COVID-19 is extremely important in terms of early diagnosis and correct treatment approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spleen is an important organ of reticuloendothelial system, but it is a less well-known organ in terms of its pathologies. Therefore, the spleen is considered a 'forgotten or neglected organ' by radiologists and clinicians. Spleen pathologies show a wide spectrum ranging from congenital anomalies to malignant lesions. Radiological imaging methods play an important role in detecting these pathologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Forearm fractures account for approximately 40% of child fractures. The elbow is treated conservatively with a 90° flexion cast. The aim of this study was to determine whether patients with forearm fractures who underwent open or closed reduction and fixation after loss of reduction in plaster follow-up is to make interobserver, and intraobserver comparisons of the radiological measurements of fracture angulations and to investigate the effect of these measurements on surgical decision. Method: In the medical records of our clinic between 2013 and 2014, 36 forearm fractures were detected in 35 patients aged 10-15 years who had undergone open reduction, and fixation because of loss of reduction. Patients who had a 1/3 mid-diaphyseal fracture of the radia and ulna and whose radiological controls on days 5, 10, 15 and 31 revealed displacement fractures were retrospectively included in the study. Results: Twenty-two patients who underwent open reduction and fixation were evaluated in terms of concordance between preoperative radiological measurements. ICC (Intraclass correlation coefficient) coefficients were 0.84 (0.69-0.92) for AP radius, 0.95 (0.91-0.97) for AP ulna, and 0.89 (0.80-0.95) for lateral radius, and 0.79 (0.60-0.90) for lateral ulna. According to this, there was a high level of concordance between these four parameters. Conclusion: The decision for surgical treatment of the patients made by different surgeons who are responsible for the treatment is based on the evaluation of the patients as a whole, but not based on measurement of radiological parameters. Although it is considered that the measurement technique may change by experience, there is no statistical difference between the measurements performed by the same person at different times.

Objective: Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus sensu latu, is one of the neglected zoonotic infectious diseases and Türkiye is among the endemic countries. This study was designed to analyze serology results for patients who were diagnosed as CE by clinical symptoms and radiological methods over a three-year period. Methods: Sera were analyzed for Anti-E. granulosus IgG by a chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) (HYDATIDOSIS VIRCLIA® IgG MONOTEST, Vircell) using the VIRCLIA® (CLIA; Vircell, Granada, Spain) and results processed by the dedicated software. Cutoff for a positive test was ≥1.1 index value. Echinococcal cysts were detected based on ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Results: A total of 244 sera were analyzed from 109 patients, during three-year-period from January 2018 to December 2020. Anti-E. granulosus IgG was ordered twice in 89 patients, three times in 15 patients, four times in four patients, and five times in one patient. CLIA test was positive among 41 of 109 (37.6%) patients in whom 32 (76%) had only hepatic involvement, whereas in 5 (12%) hepatic and pulmonary involvement were coexisted. The mean age of seropositive patients was 39.8 (6-75±2.72) and 61.9% of them (n=26) were female. Time intervals between sequential test orders varied from 1 day to 33 months. Eight seropositive patients turned out to be negative, and one of 66 seronegative patients became seropositive. Positive test results were converted to negative in the case of therapy or cyst inactivit Amaç: Echinococcus granulosus sensu latu’nun larval evresinin neden olduğu kistik ekinokokkoz (CE), ihmal edilen zoonotik enfeksiyon hastalıklarından biridir.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of percutaneous drainage of intraabdominal abscess, paying attention to success, recurrence and failure rates. Methods: A retrospective evaluation of percutaneous treatment of 58 intraabdominal abscesses in 50 patients (26 male, 24 female; between the ages of 23 to 88 years old; average age: 53 years) was performed. Abscesses were drained with the guidance of sonography and fluoroscopy. 12 abscesses (<5 cm) drained by simple needle (18 G, Chiba) aspiration; catheter (6 F to 14 F) drainage by Seldinger technique was used in the remaining 46 abscesses. Results: About 49% (23/46) of percutaneous catheterizations are terminated in the first week. The success rate in the first intervention was 63.7% (37/58). The recurrence rate was 19% (11/58) and all of them treated by second attempts. Cumulative success and failure rates were 82.8% (48/58) and 5.2% (3/58), respectively. 7 abscesses (12%) were either temporized or palliated. The overall success (with abscesses, which were temporize-palliated and required re-intervention) and failure rates were 94.8% (55/58) and 5.2% (3/58), respectively. Within a one month period, the mortality rate was 3.4% (2/58). Conclusions: Reasons for preference the percutaneous drainage procedure as a first choice in the treatment of intraabdominal abscess are general anesthesia avoidance, having lower complication rates than surgery and also being minimally invasive, easy, safe and effective. Image-guided percutaneous drainage should be performed in every intraabdominal abscess with a reliable access route in order to obtain high rates of therapy success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radiology reports play a vital role in the disease diagnosis and management process, and on certain occasions, they may contain critical findings that require immediate action by the treating physician. Automating the process of detecting such cases using Artificial Intelligence, specifically Natural Language Processing models, can significantly improve the speed of decision-making and potentially save lives. This thesis presents a novel study on detecting critical findings related to brain hemorrhage in Turkish radiology reports. We used approximately 30,000 labeled Brain Hemorrhage Computed Tomography (CT) reports to train supervised models and around 190,000 reports for pre-training and fine-tuning word embeddings and language models in mono-lingual and cross-lingual settings. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to utilize a large scale of Turkish radiology reports. Additionally, we demonstrate the impact of adapting pre-trained language models and static embeddings to the domain on the performance, finding that fine-tuning using domain-specific data improves classification accuracy.

- Abstract
Intestinal obstructions constitute a significant proportion of all emergency department admissions for abdominal pain and may lead to significant mortality and morbidity rates when left untreated. Small and large bowel obstructions may possess different etiologies and different clinical manifestations; yet, computed tomography (CT) is the imaging method of choice for both. Images need to be meticulously interpreted; in that, CT findings may be critical in deciding about a surgical intervention. CT examinations should be conducted using an intravenous contrast material, and axial images and reformatted sagittal and coronal plane images should be evaluated simultaneously. Presence of the obstruction, location of the transition point, etiology, and possible secondary complications should be looked for. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The diagnosis of periodontal diseases in dentistry is based primarily on conventional two-dimensional imaging methods. However, conventional imaging methods have disadvantages such as geometric distortion and anatomic masking resulting from the reduction of three-dimensional structures to two dimensions. These disadvantages have been eliminated by cone beam computed tomography, which are frequently used in current dentistry, allowing to obtain three-dimensional images. Cone beam computed tomography is a valuable imaging technique, particularly for the detection of intrabony defects, furcation involvement and buccal/lingual bone destruction. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of cone beam computed tomography compared to conventional methods in periodontal diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
