Abstract Introduction Panoramic radiography quality can be impaired by some errors such as positioning errors. Palatoglossal air space shadow error is one of the most common positioning errors and it is due to the tongue not sticking to the roof of the palate. Techniques used to deal with this error might help prevent unnecessary radiation to patients and save them time and money. The study aimed to investigate the effects of using celluloid matrix and edible tapes (fruit leather and chewing gum) on reducing the palatoglossal air space shadow error in panoramic imaging. Methods In our study, 270 patients referred to the Department of Radiology were randomised into three groups: a control group, a celluloid matrix group and an edible tapes group. Before panoramic imaging, all patients were instructed to adhere their tongues to the roof of their mouths, with the distinction that for the celluloid matrix and edible tapes groups, patients were asked to place celluloid tapes, fruit leathers, or chewing gums on their tongues before doing so. The routine imaging process was then performed, and the results were compared across groups to evaluate the incidence of palatoglossal air space shadow error. Background: Anteroposterior (AP) pelvic radiographs are subject to errors that may cause measurement inaccuracy in total hip arthroplasty (THA). Such errors may be detected by measuring pre- to postoperative leg-length changes in the nonoperative leg, which experiences no physical changes during THA. Methods: From AP pelvic radiographs, we measured pre- to postoperative leg-length changes (LLC) in the nonoperative legs of 67 patients who underwent primary THA using the trans-ischial line method. Results: An LLC of 0 mm was observed in the nonoperative leg in only 14 cases (21%). A LLC ⩾ 2 mm was observed in 27% (18/67) of cases, including 13% (9/67) with LLC ⩾ 3 mm and 6% (4/67) with LLC ⩾ 4 mm. A post-hoc analysis used a validated method to measure change in pelvic tilt between pre- and postoperative images and found that changes in pelvic tilt ⩾ 4° in the anterior and posterior directions created apparent lengthening (2.0 ± 1.4 mm, p < 0.001 vs. 0–3° of tilt) and shortening (−2.1 ± 1.6 mm, p < 0.001 vs. 0–3° of tilt) of the nonoperative leg, respectively. Conclusions: The current study provides evidence of measurement errors in leg length using AP pelvic radiographs following THA. Changes in pelvic tilt may be in part responsible for these errors, with the direction of change in pelvic tilt influencing the apparent lengthening or shortening of the lower limb. Introduction: Reduction the error intraoral radiographic image is very important for accurate diagnosis of dental diseases and reduces the patient and clinician dose. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of intraoral radiographic errors made by students of Shahid Sadoughi Faculty of Dentistry in Yazd City. Methods: In this descriptive-cross-sectional study, 1900 samples of periapical radiographs were taken using digital periapical bisect angle method and bite-wing radiographs were evaluated. Patients referred to Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Department of Yazd Dental School in 2018-2019 were evaluated by simple sampling method. During 4 months, the researcher examined 25 radiographic images for cone cut errors, horizontal and vertical angles, and incorrect film placement. Also, if the radiography was repeated, the number and reason were also recorded. The recorded data were entered into SPSS version 16 software and the prevalence of each error was reported. Results: The errors in this study included incorrect film placement (32.4%), incorrect horizontal angle (28.2%), incorrect vertical angle (24.6%), cone cut (23.9%) and radiographic repetition rate (33%). In periapical radiograph, the frequency of errors was observed in maxilla (54.6%), mandible (45.4%), anterior (22.5%) and posterior (77.5%). The frequency of errors in bite-wing radiograph was estimated to be lower than periapical. Conclusion: Based on the results obtained in the study population, the most common error included incorrect placement and wrong horizontal angle, which were led to the most repeated radiographs and observed mostly posterior of maxilla, which emphasizes the need for further training to correct the errors.

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the effects of working days and hours on panoramic and periapical radiographic errors and investigate the association between patient-induced cephalometric radiographic errors and skeletal malocclusions. Methodology: Obtained from archives of Manisa Dental Health Center, 1402 periapical, 1329 panoramic, and 309 cephalometric radiographs were investigated retrospectively between January-June 2018, and the radiographic errors were determined. Periapical, panoramic, and total errors were grouped according to the number of radiographs, day intensity, and acquisition date and time for each day. Cephalometric radiographs were not included to determine the effects of working hours and days on radiographic errors since the radiographs were taken over the weekend. Patient-induced cephalometric radiographic errors were investigated under the classification of skeletal malocclusions. The independent sample t-test was used to investigate the average range difference between two independent groups for normally distributed variables. However, in situations where the assumption of normality was not met, the Mann-Whitney U test was performed. Results: Total errors were mostly detected on Tuesday (p=0.035). Errors of panoramic and periapical radiographs acquired in the afternoon were higher than those of the radiographs acquired before noon only on Monday (p=0.024, p=0.035). The most common errors observed in periapical radiographs were the positioning errors (23.9%) and cone cut (17.3%), respectively. The most common errors observed in panoramic radiographs were chin tipped high (17.00%), and head turned to one side (9.9%), respectively. Among Class I, II, and III malocclusions, open lips were observed as the most frequent cephalometric radiographic errors (28.6, 15.4, and 16.1%, respectively). Conclusion: The percentage of radiographic errors increases with the intense workload. An anatomical structure may lead to patient-induced cephalometric radiographic errors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency and severity of positioning errors in panoramic radiography in general dentistry. A total of 1904 digital panoramic radiographs, taken by the Public Dental Service in the county of Sörmland, Sweden, were analysed retrospectively. The study population consisted of all patients who underwent a panoramic examination during the year 2011. One experienced oral radiologist evaluated all radiographs for 10 common errors. Of the 1904 radiographs examined, 79 per cent had errors. The number of errors varied between 1-4 errors per image. No errors were found in 404 images (21%). Fifty-five images (3%) had severe errors, which made it impossible to make correct diagnostics. The most common error was the tongue not being in contact with the hard palate during exposure. However, this did not greatly affect the diagnostic usefulness of the image due to the ability to enhance the image.The patient's head was tilted too far upwards in 23 per cent of the images and the patient's head was rotated during exposure in 15 per cent. The least common error was due to patient movement during exposure (1%). Panoramic radiographs taken in general dental clinics in a Swedish county show several errors. Proper positioning of the patient is necessary to achieve panoramic images with good image quality. Introduction: Intraoral periapical radiographic film is essential and aids in diagnosis, treatment planning, monitoring treatment and monitoring lesion development. A poor image quality of radiographic film and poor record keeping of these radiographs can affect the clinician's decision making. This first audit was to evaluate the quality of radiographic images and the compliance in following the standard of recording and labeling of radiographic films. The objectives of this audit were; firstly to highlight any potential problems involving quality of radiographic films within the department. Second, to assess the compliance of record keeping and labeling of intraoral radiographs. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in a retrospective manner in the year 2017 with a sample of 100 intraoral periapical radiographic films from the year 2015 to 2016 in Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah. Results: This first audit cycle demonstrated: Good quality of radiographic films: 13% (n= 13/100), Good compliance of record keeping and labeling of radiograph: 32% (n= 32/100). Recommendation and Action Plan: Improve the quality of radiographic films: * To standardize the method of taking and processing radiographic films * Continuous training sessions for staff in usage of the film holder Improve the compliance of record keeping and labeling of radiographic film * To develop the standard protocol of recording and labeling of radiographic films * To have monthly radiograph monitoring and record keeping Conclusion(s): A good quality of intraoral radiographic film and good record keeping are essential to avoid unnecessary retake and repeated radiation exposure as well as keeping patient's record confidentially.
