1. A Study on The Suitability of Pumice Stone Powder As A Cementitious Material in Sustainable Green Concrete Production

Abstract

This experimental considered involves on the performance properties of pumice powder as a supplementary cementitious material for ordinary Portland cement materials. The results showed that the pumice powder can be categorized as a pozzolanic constituents according to the ASTM C 618 standard, its main chemical composition SiO2 + Al2O3 + Fe2O3 must be higher than 70% and it was confirmed as suitable for its potential use as a supplemental cementitious resources in the production of concrete materials. As the amount of replacement of cement by the pumice powder increases its workability and density become decreases, it’s delayed in setting time observed, and it requires more water to achieve standard consistency. At 25%, it was a weight reduction of up to 3.83% was observed, as a weight of cement substituted with powdered pumice, and the compressive strength of the powdered pumice specimens was replaced with a cement at different levels of 5wt%, 10wt%, 15wt%, 20wt%, and 25wt% cement resulted in a decrease after 7, 28, 56 and 90 days. In addition, it was observed in this study that its strength decreased with increasing curing age; however; replacing ordinary Portland cement with 5wt% to 10wt% pumice powder achieved the specified minimum compressive strength after a curing time of 28 days. But, a concrete sample prepared with 15% partial replacement achieved the specified minimum compressive strength after 56 days. From 15% replacement, there is then a gradual drop in its compressive strength, and the specified minimum strength was not achieved even after a curing time of 56 days it was found that the maximum strain of the concrete was replaced with a powder pumice stone is lower than conventional concrete. Based on the above property, it indicates the suitable pumice powder as a cementitious supplementary material in various concrete construction.

Abstract

Pumice stone (P), which is as a cheap material, can be a good candidate for filling material for polymers because of its high thermal resistance. Its effect on properties of polypropylene (PP) has not been studied in detail up to now. The mechanical, viscoelastic, thermal, morphological, crystallographic, and thermomechanical behaviors of PP filled with P powder were studied. The composites were produced by adding different weight fractions of P powder (0–40 wt%) into PP using a high-speed thermo kinetic mixer and compression molding. The highest tensile and flexural strength values, 26.5 and 46.4 MPa, respectively, were obtained when 10 wt% of P powder was filled into PP. Besides, the storage and loss modulus of PP was increased with the addition of P powder. The onset decomposition temperature of PP increased by 39°C with P powder loading into PP. The addition of P powder into PP led to a significant increase on the crystallinity of PP. Abstract

Adsorption processes of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions onto pumice stone powder (PSP) were investigated in batch mode. The in uences of solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial metal (M) concentration, and temperature on adsorption process were investigated. The kinetic and isotherm data were analysed using different model equations. The adsorption process was consistent with the Langmuir model for both metal ions with high R² and low χ ² values for both Pb(II) and Cd(II). The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities were 28.09 and 27.17 mg g-1 for Pb(II) and for Cd(II), respectively. The pseudo-second order kinetic model explained the kinetic data as evidenced by the calculated qe (cal) values (10.42 mg g-1 for Pb(II) and 2.62 mg g-1 for Cd(II)) agreeing with the experimental values (9.24 mg g-1 for Pb(II) and 2.49 mg g-1 for Cd(II)). Consequently, the present study demonstrated that PSP could be utilised in adsorptive removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
