This quasi-experimental study examines the effectiveness of a psychoeducational group intervention program consisting of psychoeducation sessions and group exercises based on psychodrama warm-up activities resulting from the needs of public sector call center agents in the workplace. Forty municipality call center employees from two municipalities (intervention and control groups) completed pre- and post-test measures before and after the intervention program. Within the scope of the study in sociodemographic form, the Brief Psychological Resilience Scale (BPRS), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS), Organization-Based Self-Esteem Scale (OBSES), Group Cohesion Scale (GCS), and Group Atmosphere Scale (GAS) were used. A follow-up session and follow-up test for the intervention group took place one month after the completion of the intervention sessions. The intervention group showed significant pre-to-post-test short-term effects on psychological resilience and pre-to-follow-up long-term effects on group atmosphere scores. However, there was no significant change in burnout, well-being, or organization-based self-esteem scores. Moreover, no significant difference was noted in the control group from pre- to post-test, except for the decrease in the group atmosphere scores.

Objective: This study focused on purpose as a key mechanism of posttraumatic growth for university student survivors of sexual assault. Participants: An online survey was completed by 278 participants of various ethnic, racial and gender backgrounds, recruited through email, social media, department subject pools, and Amazon Mechanical Turk. Methods: Researchers used mixed methods, concurrent triangulation approach in which quantitative and qualitative data were collected simultaneously with closed and open-ended questions. Results: Hierarchical multiple regression demonstrated that age, purpose in life, high magnitude stressors, and trauma history were significantly related to posttraumatic growth. Emergent themes described the impacts of sexual assault, how sexual assault impacts purpose, and ways in which purpose impacted posttraumatic growth. Conclusion: Results confirmed the association of purpose with posttraumatic growth as well as other key impacts of trauma that should be investigated further. Next steps include evaluating therapeutic interventions focused on purpose.

Introduction: The current study obtained perspectives on psychotherapy practices from adults with intellectual disability receiving psychotherapy and mental health clinicians serving adults with intellectual disability. The goal was to identify opportunities, successes, and challenges through the perspective of adults with intellectual disability who have received mental health treatment (i.e. clients) and clinicians providing psychotherapy. Method: A total of six virtual focus groups, three with clinicians and three with clients with intellectual disability who had experience with psychotherapy, were conducted. Transcripts were coded by two independent reviewers guided by grounded theory. Results: Broadly, analyses indicated overlapping themes with rich perspectives from both groups. Both clinicians and clients with intellectual disability identified a number of key aspects that were perceived as foundational to therapy and to improving the therapeutic relationship and comfort of the client with intellectual disability. Themes related to rapport building and self-determination emerged, despite not being directly asked of either group. Both clinicians and clients with intellectual disability discussed the therapeutic process at length, related to general types of treatment modality as well as the importance of individualizing treatment strategies. Clinicians spoke of regularly making accommodations to increase treatment accessibility. Conclusion: The focus group results align with and supplement treatment outcome research and have implications for training, practice, and future research.

Measurement-based care (MBC) research and practice, including clinical workflows and systems to support MBC, are grounded in adult-serving mental health systems. MBC research evidence is building in child and adolescent services, but MBC practice is inherently more complex due to identified client age, the family system and the need to involve multiple reporters. This paper seeks to address a gap in the literature by providing practical guidance for youth-serving clinicians implementing MBC with children and their families. We focus on MBC as a data-informed, client-centered communication process, and present three key strategies to enhance usual care child and adolescent psychotherapy via developmentally-appropriate MBC. These strategies include (1) go beyond standardized measures; (2) lean into discrepancies; and (3) get curious together. Case-based examples drawn from various child-serving settings illustrate these key strategies of MBC in child psychotherapy.

This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficacy of psychological therapies for anxiety for people with autism and co-occurring intellectual developmental disorder (AUT + IDD). A systematic search identified 13 studies comprising 49 participants with AUT + IDD, aged between 5 and 41 years. Most studies were single-case experimental designs (n = 7) or case studies or case series (n = 4). Studies implemented cognitive behavioural therapy (n = 4) or exposure therapy techniques (n = 9). All studies reported a reduction in anxiety symptoms, as measured by either quantitative measures or defined as participants meeting end of treatment criterion. However, the conclusions are preliminary due to the methodological limitations of the current literature. The implications of these findings, as well as recommendations for future direction in the field, are discussed.

This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of psychological behavioral therapies to improve behaviors of autistic children during dental visits. Screening, data extraction, risk-of-bias assessment, and evaluation of certainty of evidence were performed by two independent reviewers. Eighteen studies were ultimately included. On average 56% (95% confidence interval, 33.95-78.29) and 64% (95% confidence interval 47.24-81.80) of autistic children can cooperate with dental examination with an oral mirror in the first and second visits, respectively. Visual pedagogy did not improve the proportion of autistic children who can accept dental examinations. Inconsistent results were also identified for Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped CHildren, Picture Exchange Communication System, Applied Behavior Analysis, video modeling, distractions, and other conventional behavioral management techniques. Many studies were of small sample size, lacked a control group, did not account for autism spectrum disorder severity, comorbidities, previous dental experience or other confounders, and had a high risk of bias. The evidence supporting the use of psychoeducation techniques to improve the dental experience of autistic children is limited and of very low certainty. Further research with larger scale studies and appropriate control groups is needed to enhance the certainty of evidence in this field.

The application of an integrative approach in fairy tale therapy is a cutting-edge method for safeguarding the mental well-being of the younger generation in the era of digital education. The unique aspect of integrative fairy tale therapy is the integration of various methodologies, pedagogical approaches, linguistic techniques, art history, and psychotherapeutic methods within a single fairy tale framework. These are then tailored to the individual psyches of children, with the aim of fostering a well-rounded and healthy personality. Utilising fairy tale therapy techniques in the spiritual and moral growth of students can provide valuable insights into the effective implementation of fairy tale therapy programmes for preschoolers and schoolchildren. These programmes are rooted in the rich oral folk art of the Kazakh people and encompass a harmonious blend of spiritual, national, and universal values. The article reveals theoretical and methodological, general cultural and educational, psychological aspects of the study of fairy tale therapy as an integrative technology. The literature review of the main types of fairy tale therapy is also carried out, the functions of fairy tales are reveale. The educational, developmental, and cognitive possibilities of fairy tales are extensively utilised in academic and correctional-developmental activities with students. The importance of preparing future philologists, art historians, social teachers, psychologists, and kindergarten teachers in utilising fairy tale therapy techniques as an integrative technology is emphasised. The article discusses the theoretical, methodological, cultural, educational, and psychological aspects of fairy tale therapy as an integrative technology. This research is funded by the State Institution "Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan" under the project IRN AP19679368, which aims to preserve the psychological health of the younger generation in the context of digitalization of education.

Group sandplay therapy is a useful instrument for healing family rifts. This article is a case study where the group sandplay therapy method was used to address the client's conflicts with his family members. The therapy outcomes show that group sandplay therapy is efficacious in enhancing communication and interaction between family members, improving interpersonal relationships within a family, particularly the parent-child relationship, and alleviating parent-child tensions as barriers to effective home education.

This article describes the author's experience as a specialist working at a nature-based sleepaway camp for children and their families in Antalya Geyikbayiri. The camp was organized by a psychotherapist and three expert instructors to enhance the connections between parents and children, other children and parents present, and with the natural world, enabling everyone to gain different perspectives. The workshops are diverse and include activities such as nature discovery walks, awareness activities in nature, music sessions, philosophy workshops, movement exercises, circus arts, creative arts, storytelling, and rock climbing. With the support of natural settings throughout the different philosophy workshops, the participants gain insights into their perspectives on specific subjects, recognize beliefs accepted without much contemplation, understand their thought patterns, identify contradictions, and explore the possibilities of thinking differently. Their opinions may evolve, becoming clearer, more uncertain, or even changing altogether through interacting with other participants, the examples and counterexamples they provide, and the questions posed by the instructors and participants.

Little is known about the nature of social anxiety in autistic people: What is similar and different about factors contributing to social anxiety in autistic and non-autistic people? There is also very limited research about autistic people's experiences of therapy for social anxiety in current routine clinical practice. This study investigated these issues by analysing responses to an online questionnaire for 308 adults with elevated social anxiety (232 autistic people and 76 non-autistic people) using mixed-methods approaches. Distinct factors influenced social anxiety in autistic participants, including individual and environmental factors relating to autistic experiences in the social world. We propose a 'distinct' model of social anxiety in autism. In addition, many participants had not had helpful experiences in therapy, especially cognitive behaviour therapy, for social anxiety: They thought therapists did not always acknowledge the basis of their social fears, did not adapt the therapy process in an individualised way and did not understand neurodiversity or recognise neurodivergence. Our results suggest that social anxiety needs to be understood specifically in the context of autism, and if this is neglected, therapy is unlikely to be helpful. Based on participants' comments, this article makes some practical recommendations for therapists supporting autistic adults with social anxiety.

Background: Talking therapy for people with intellectual disabilities is often specifically adapted. One adaptation is the involvement of significant others in therapy, however, there is no systematic description of the use of this adaptation in routine clinical practice. Method: An online survey of UK psychologists regarding the inclusion of significant others in individual therapy with people with intellectual disabilities. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Ninety-five psychologists who work with people with intellectual disabilities provided responses to questions regarding the decision to include significant others in therapy, factors that make including significant others more or less likely and how the role of significant others is explained to them. Conclusions: Psychologists consider a range of factors in deciding the involvement of significant others. We discuss implications for training of therapists working with people with intellectual disabilities, issues of consent and how the roles of significant others are understood.

Autistic adults experience disproportionate rates of co-occurring mental health problems. Psychotherapy has been recognized as an appropriate treatment approach, but evidence is limited. Researchers used a qualitative research paradigm to explore the experiences of mental health providers who provide psychotherapy to autistic adults. The Enhanced Critical Incident Technique was used to interview 13 mental health providers regarding perceptions of facilitating therapy with autistic adults. This research highlights challenges to providing psychotherapy to autistic adults while also illuminating ways that mental health providers have worked to ameliorate such challenges and create positive experiences in therapy. This research also contrasts therapy for autistic adults relative to the general population. Practice recommendations and suggestions for future research are offered.

When studies use different scales to measure continuous outcomes, standardised mean differences (SMD) are required to meta-analyse the data. However, outcomes are often reported as endpoint or change from baseline scores. Combining corresponding SMDs can be problematic and available guidance advises against this practice. We aimed to examine the impact of combining the two types of SMD in meta-analyses of depression severity. We used individual participant data on pharmacological interventions (89 studies, 27,409 participants) and internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT; 61 studies, 13,687 participants) for depression to compare endpoint and change from baseline SMDs at the study level. Next, we performed pairwise (PWMA) and network meta-analyses (NMA) using endpoint SMDs, change from baseline SMDs, or a mixture of the two. Study-specific SMDs calculated from endpoint and change from baseline data were largely similar, although for iCBT interventions 25% of the studies at 3 months were associated with important differences between study-specific SMDs (median 0.01, IQR -0.10, 0.13) especially in smaller trials with baseline imbalances. However, when pooled, the differences between endpoint and change SMDs were negligible. Pooling only the more favourable of the two SMDs did not materially affect meta-analyses, resulting in differences of pooled SMDs up to 0.05 and 0.13 in the pharmacological and iCBT datasets, respectively. Our findings have implications for meta-analyses in depression, where we showed that the choice between endpoint and change scores for estimating SMDs had immaterial impact on summary meta-analytic estimates. Future studies should replicate and extend our analyses to fields other than depression.

Background: Originally designed for use with adolescents in group-based settings, there has been limited evaluation of Trauma and Grief Component Therapy (TGCT) with respect to its use with individual patients across a wide age range of children and adolescents. Objectives: This study describes a pilot open trial of individually administered TGCT, an assessment-driven, modularized treatment for traumatized and/or bereaved children and adolescents. Key outcomes measures include posttraumatic stress, depressive symptoms, and maladaptive grief reactions. Method: The sample consisted of 58 treatment-seeking children and adolescents who experienced trauma and/or bereavement (ages 7-17 years, M = 12.78, SD = 2.93; 68.4% female; 45.6% Hispanic, 14.0% Black, 22.8% White, 14.0% Multiracial). The study used a single-group open trial design. Youth referred to the study due to experiencing a potentially traumatic event or death of a loved one completed self-report measures of posttraumatic stress, depressive symptoms, and maladaptive grief reactions (when applicable). Measures were also completed following Module 1 of the treatment. Results: Bayesian regression models revealed youth who completed TGCT Module 1 reported substantial reductions from baseline, with large effect sizes for posttraumatic stress, depressive symptoms, and maladaptive grief reactions. Rates of reliable improvement ranged from 42 to 65% across treatment outcomes with 69% of youth demonstrating reliable improvement in at least one outcome. Conclusions: The present study provides preliminary evidence supporting TGCT as an individual treatment for traumatized and/or bereaved children and adolescents experiencing posttraumatic stress, depressive symptoms, and/or maladaptive grief reactions.

The aim of this research is to explore emotional processes occurring during educational dialogues on civic and social issues (EDCSI) by asking what factors arouse emotions in EDCSI, how do these factors interact, how do they affect the participants, and how this effect can be explained from the perspective of group therapy. EDCSI involves a complex set of emotions at the individual, inter-personal, and group levels that cannot only be explained by already existing frameworks used in educational research. Thirty-three students discussed civic and social issues using digital media in two different settings: a three-day learning seminar for secondary school students and an undergraduate university course. Using a cued retrospective reporting protocol, the students were interviewed and asked to refer to their overall experience in the discussions and to emotional moments they experienced. The analysis of the interviews shows that factors that arouse emotions pertain to the personal, interpersonal, and group dimensions, and often interact with each other. The emotional processes described by the participants were consistent with factors identified in the field of group psychotherapy such as instillation of hope, universality, imitative behaviors, and interpersonal learning. We therefore claim that research about emotional processes in group therapy may contribute to understanding the multi-level emotional processes occurring in EDCSI and that psychotherapy practices may inspire educators in designing and facilitating EDCSI.

Background: Telehealth utilization exploded during the COVID-19 pandemic, including within school-based health programs. School-based tele-behavioral health can help programs overcome barriers of access to care, but the current state and effectiveness of such programs are unknown. Methods: A scoping literature review was conducted. Studies were included if they described in-school behavioral health services delivered via telehealth for children ages 5 to 18. From the included studies, population, location, setting, intervention, telehealth modality, clinician type, and outcomes assessed were extracted. Findings: Eighteen studies met inclusion criteria. All described psychotherapy or medication management delivered by psychologists (n = 7) and/or psychiatrists (n = 11). Treatment included psychotherapy (N = 8), psychiatric consultation (N = 7), medication management (N = 4), crisis stabilization (N = 1), and caregiver education (N = 1). Eight studies provide qualitative or quantitative outcomes, with 4 examining clinical effectiveness. Conclusions: Despite limited findings in the literature, school-based tele-behavioral health is feasible, effective, and acceptable for delivery of behavioral health care to children and adolescents.

This article analyzes how schools in the U.S respond to trauma in children and teens after the homicide of a peer and provides suggestions for best practices. The focus is not on in-school mass shootings but on homicide of young people outside of schools, in neighborhoods, which is the leading cause of death for African Americans between ages 15 to 24 years old, the second leading cause of death for Hispanic youth, and the third leading cause of death among White Youth (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2020). Typically, these deaths are not a national focus and schools have little resources to guide them in how to respond in the aftermath. Utilizing theoretical background on disenfranchised grief and trauma based practice, current school based response, and examples from the author's own experience in a large, urban school district in NJ, this article seeks to dissect this difficult topic.

The online environment spreads a strong culture of self-disclosure by providing individuals with countless opportunities for social interaction. This spread has accelerated with the COVID-19 pandemic. As the culture of self-disclosure in the online environment increases, it is curious how families, students, and educators are affected by the situation. It is important for psychological counselors who are engaged in adaptive, preventive, and remedial work in schools to investigate the opportunities and risky aspects of online self-disclosure. It should be carefully examined to see how it will add innovations to counselors' practices. This study aims to present a publication profile on online self-disclosure through bibliometric analysis. In this context, only 256 articles published in English and Turkish related to education, psychology, and family were analyzed. According to the findings, the country with the highest number of publications on online self-disclosure was the USA. The most publishing institutions are universities in the USA. The most productive year on the subject was 2021. It was determined that more and more effective publications were made with adolescents. The most frequently repeated keyword is self-disclosure, while social disruption is the most frequently repeated keyword in terms of psychological factors. It can be said that online self-disclosure is in its infancy in both educational and psychological counseling literature.

The authors present a case report for an adolescent student with a learning disability who has academic, behavioral, and intensive mental health needs. A therapeutic package to support and maintain student progress is discussed. The case report outlines specifically how the student's mental health needs were supported through the implementation of Acceptance Commitment Therapy and a Check-In, Check-Out procedure. The authors discuss how the interventions are applied to the student's academic engagement, emotional stability, and improved quality of life. Major takeaways and implications for school teams are discussed.

Transactional Analysis has long been used in therapy settings and by coaching institutions to improve personal outcomes. It is best described as a practical application of tools to guide interpersonal interactions. Born out of Transactional Analysis is the Drama Triangle created by Stephen Karpman (1968), OK Corral created by Frank H. Ernst Jr. (1971), and the Winner's Triangle by Acey Choy (1990). These simple concepts have the potential to transform academic institutions and prevent dysfunctional relationships between faculty, staff, and/or students, which stem from the heightened academic environment and ineffective coping skills.

The aim of this article is to review the importance of the question of life's meaning, mainly for intellectually gifted, as well as suggesting possibilities for educational and therapeutic approaches with an integration between Dabrowski's proposals and Frankl's and Yalom's existential psychotherapies for enhancing meaning. In particular, we suggest that "a successful transition between childhood and adult giftedness depends upon the gifted individual's finding meaning in their life and a sense of purpose through which to try to achieve it." The article is based on an integration of theory-based propositions, a review of existing research, and clinical observations. We conclude that it is important to integrate ideas about existential problems into education and psychotherapy for the gifted, increasing gifted individuals' sense of meaning through development of human values, a eudaimonic life orientation, full expression of potential, generativity, harmony, self-compassion, and spirituality.

Purpose: Developmental stuttering is a complex and multifaceted neurodevelopmental disorder that may cause pervasive negative consequences for adults who stutter (AWS). Historically, intervention for AWS has primarily addressed speech fluency, with less focus on the covert psychosocial aspects of the disorder. The purpose of this article is to report on a feasibility trial evaluating a novel integrated intervention that combines traditional stuttering management techniques with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for AWS. Method: Twenty-nine AWS participated in the feasibility trial. All participants successfully completed a combined fluency and ACT intervention, titled the fluency and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Stuttering (fACTS) Program. As this was a feasibility study, no control group was included. Intervention was administered by two certified practicing speech-language pathologists, over eight 60- to 90-min sessions. Results: Generalized linear mixed modeling was used to determine change from pre- to post-intervention and follow-up. Significant pre- and post-intervention improvements in self-efficacy, psychosocial functioning, and psychological flexibility were observed, along with significant reductions in observable stuttering behaviors (i.e., stuttered speech frequency). Intervention gains for all variables of interest were maintained 3 and 6 months post-intervention. Conclusions: The fACTS Program was created to be a holistic and flexible intervention to promote self-efficacy beliefs and address stuttering-related psychosocial impacts and speech fluency goals of AWS. Preliminary results indicated positive improvement in all psychosocial outcomes (i.e., self-efficacy, psychosocial impact, and psychological flexibility) and observable speech fluency following completion of the program. Future clinical trials of the fACTS Program with an included control group will further investigate the mechanisms of change for the positive effects observed.

Introduction: Executive function (EF) deficits are common in youth with ADHD and pose significant functional impairments. The extent and effect of interventions addressing EF in youth with ADHD remain unclear. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review using PRISMA guidelines. Included studies were randomized controlled trials of interventions to treat EF in youth with ADHD. Results: Our search returned 136 studies representing 11,443 study participants. We identified six intervention categories: nonstimulant pharmacological (N = 3,576 participants), neurological (N = 1,935), psychological (N = 2,387), digital (N = 2,416), physiological (N = 680), and combination (N = 366). The bulk of the evidence supported pharmacological interventions as most effective in mitigating EF, followed by psychological and digital interventions. Conclusion: A breadth of treatments exists for EF in youth with ADHD. Pharmacological, psychotherapeutic, and digital interventions had the most favorable, replicable outcomes. A lack of outcome standardization across studies limited treatment comparison. More data on the persistence of intervention effects are necessary.

Objective: The aim of this study was to identify patterns of ADHD care, including factors that guide selection and sequencing of treatments in a large nationwide sample of preschool-aged youth over the past 6 years. Method: A retrospective cohort study utilizing a large electronic health record (TriNetX) of nearly 24,000 children ages 3 to 6 diagnosed with ADHD. Results: One in three preschoolers with ADHD were prescribed psychotropic medication, most commonly methylphenidate and guanfacine. One in 10 had at least one psychotherapy billing code during the entire assessment with most youth starting medication before psychotherapy. Rates of most treatments, including polypharmacy, increased with comorbid psychiatric disorders or sleep problems and over the course of the coronavirus pandemic. Conclusion: Rates of treatment have increased over time but are still largely inconsistent with published care guidelines that advise therapy before medication. Clinicians appear to prioritize psychiatric comorbidity and sleep problems when selecting treatments.

Processes of identity formation have long been a consideration for the field of counselling. Undertaking counselling education can be a fraught time for student counsellors, with increased anxiety and stress, and educators and researchers need to better grasp the complexities inherent in the development of new counsellors. This paper reviews research drawing on humanistic understandings of identity for counsellors-in-training before engaging with the recent ontological turn to a posthuman framework, emergent across the social sciences. Through attention to the emergence of the tears of counsellors-in-training in counselling encounters, a posthuman reconceptualising of "becoming-counsellor" is put forward. Such an orientation produces a shift to entangled, dynamic, iterative processes of becoming, with attention to myriad forces shaping counsellor identities.

Introduction: For in-person psychotherapy, psychotherapists make individual adaptions to meet clients' disability-related needs, for example, by providing plain or sign language. Such adaptations apply to different types of psychotherapy (e.g. psychodynamic, systemic, or cognitive-behavioral). Digital interventions, such as video psychotherapy or internet interventions, allow more flexibility in terms of design, individual preferences, and integration of text, video, or audio. Methods: This clinical perspective explores issues associated with the delivery of psychotherapy using traditional in-person sessions vs digital interventions utilizing literature related to the topic. The evidence is synthesized to build an argument of the relative merits and challenges of either approach to the psychotherapeutic encounter of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Results: For cognitive disabilities, the needs for in-person and digital psychotherapy interventions were comparable and focused on simple/plain language, reducing session complexity, and linear therapy structure. For motor, hearing, and visual impairments, the needs differed between the two forms of psychotherapy. Conclusion: Involving the target group in design and testing of digital interventions was considered critical.

Transdiagnostic interventions are efficient treatments for common youth mental health concerns and may be particularly well suited for school-based practice. Implementing them can potentially strengthen school psychologists' identity as mental health practitioners. Some student problems may benefit more from direct school psychological services than consultation. School psychologists may wonder if it is possible to incorporate direct mental health intervention into their practice. Even when time allows, other questions arise such as upkeep of competency in mental health interventions and how provision of mental health supports fits within a school's existing system. The purpose of this article is to define and propose transdiagnostic intervention as a fit for contemporary school-based mental health practice. It also share practical resources that practitioners can access for training and implementation support.

This study investigated the influence of language - first language (L1) versus second language (L2) -- on the experience and the expression of the emotion of guilt. Fifty-two Greek - Spanish bilinguals read two moral scenarios that induced guilt in their L2 (Spanish) and rated the intensity with which they felt a series of emotions (moral scenario task). Then they were asked to recall and write about a real-life event that made them feel guilty in their L2 (autobiographical memory task). A month later they performed the same tasks in their L1. Content analysis and emotional vocabulary analysis were conducted to examine cross-linguistic differences in the expression of guilt. Overall, these bilinguals experienced higher levels of guilt and regret when they read the moral scenarios in their L1 Greek. They also used a greater number of emotion words in their autobiographical memories in L1. However, they appeared to be more willing to talk about sensitive topics (e.g. infidelity, homosexuality, and death) in their L2. These findings have implications for both psychotherapy and L2 instruction.

Despite the many counselling theories that have been developed thus far, none sufficiently capture and facilitate a complex understanding of existence and the purpose of human life with respect to humans and their relationship with the creator. Thus, religious counselling theory offers a solution to overcome these shortcomings. This research was conducted in Indonesia with the aim of producing a comprehensive religious counselling theory. The theory resulting from this study includes the basic assumptions of religious counselling, its key concepts and, objectives, the process or relationship of religious counselling, its approaches, techniques, and procedures, as well as its main applications. This study also addresses the limitations and contributions of religious counselling theory, and the attitudes and personality of counsellors from the perspective of religious counselling.

Although the use of telesupervision (technology-assisted supervision) is increasing in line with trends in digital health, this remains to be an under-researched area. This systematic review sought to evaluate the current state of knowledge about counsellors', psychotherapists' and psychologists' perspectives and experiences of receiving clinical supervision online, and to determine specific gaps in the literature. Five themes emerged within the literature review: comparison of telesupervision with in-person supervision; challenges of telesupervision; benefits of telesupervision; components of effective telesupervision and supervisor characteristics. Overall, evidence suggests that supervisory relationship is the key factor in quality and efficacy of supervision, regardless of delivery modality. Recommendations are made for practice, including training both supervisors and supervisees in telesupervision, and future research directions are discussed.

Beryl Gilroy (1924-2001) is often referred to as one of the first Black primary school headteachers in London, England. Her refusal to continue teaching in schools once she reached her fifties has not been explored in recent publications. Her interest in sound, pedagogy and therapeutic recovery can be revisited retrospectively. She strove to counter racism through the power of communication as a teacher, radio broadcaster, headteacher, therapist and published writer of memoir, novels and children's reading books. The unifying thread in this article interweaves different perspectives on why Beryl Gilroy tried to create colloquial and phonetic speech in her published writings. It is argued that perhaps this was devised to help the reader share in her own reimagining of "poignant veridicality" -- an appreciation of truth as something reached through sonic immersion in valuable and contrasting interpretations and feelings that do not always have to have rational explanations.

Introduction: Autistic people with co-occurring intellectual disability have a high risk of mental disorders. This study aimed to investigate specialized mental health services for this group, emphasizing inpatient/outpatient treatment, patient characteristics, interventions, and outcomes. Methods: The current study used data from a Norwegian multicenter study (the AUP study), 151 participants were included. Statistical analyses included comparisons of the two treatment groups and multiple analyses of variance on outcome measures of behavioral and mental health symptoms for all patients. Results: Seventy-four patients received outpatient treatment and 77 received inpatient treatment. The inpatients had significantly more "severe" mental disorders and received a higher number of interventions. Both groups improved significantly during treatment, inpatients slightly more. Psychotherapy was associated with positive outcomes. Psychopharmacological treatment or duration were not associated with outcomes. Conclusion: Treatment of mental disorders is effective in autistic people with co-occurring intellectual disability. Psychotherapy may be beneficial for these patients.

Using Chinese language teaching in an engineering department as an example, this paper explores how language teaching can meet the challenges of globalisation and the advancement of technology by fulfilling its educational function as described in Byram's model of intercultural communicative competence. By adapting theories and practices from counselling psychology, the proposed curriculum focuses on emotions to help learners uncover emotional barriers that arise when confronted with differences. It will support learners in raising awareness and developing their capacity to negotiate differences, leading to more effective cooperation with others. The paper discusses the use of experiential exercises in the classroom. They include those developed in Chinese language pedagogy, namely the performed culture approach and those developed in humanistic psychotherapy, such as body psychotherapy. The aim is to help learners notice their own feelings, attitudes, and behaviour as well as the otherness of the other in the classroom. This approach is powerful because it is in the here and now. It utilises movements and different senses as well as cognition. It helps uncover barriers to intercultural communication hidden under the surface by making the unconscious conscious. Reflection is a key part of this process. Learners are expected to reflect on their own thinking and feelings and to make sense of the dynamics in the classroom. Learners are expected to develop reflexivity, subjectivity and intersubjective awareness while acquiring linguistic competency and social cultural rules of use.

Even when raters demonstrate agreement in the use of a measure, limited score variability or violation of often-ignored statistical assumptions can result in lower reliability estimates than intuitively expected. This article uses data drawn from two randomized controlled trials of schema therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of major depression and binge eating disorder or bulimia nervosa (N = 212) to illustrate the limits of the intraclass coefficient. Randomly selected therapy sessions were rated for therapeutic alliance quality by independent observers using the well-validated Vanderbilt Psychotherapy Process Scale and Vanderbilt Therapeutic Alliance Scale. Scores on subscales related to therapist behavior were restricted, indicating consistent alliance-supportive actions. Inter-rater reliability estimates were low despite high agreement between raters, however. The use of Bland-Altman plots to visualize agreement and data spread is suggested as a useful tool for researchers, consistent with the ideal of exploring reliability from a number of perspectives.

Creativity has been conceptualized not just as a measure of artistic ability, but also as an adaptive trait of everyday innovation. We posit the relevance of "everyday creativity" to the field of psychotherapy. Although creativity has been theorized in psychotherapy models of change and the therapy process, little empirical research has examined patients' and therapists' creativity in psychotherapy treatments. Moreover, creativity research has been hampered by the vast array of definitions and operationalizations of the construct. Despite a lack of direct evidence, there appears to be substantial overlap between the empirically observed characteristics of creativity and the aims of psychotherapy treatments. First, research on characteristics of creative individuals, by way of personality, cognition, emotion, and psychopathology might overlap with what we know about individuals who benefit from psychotherapy. Second, the therapeutic process might resemble a creative process, suggesting that creativity could be a mediator of treatment outcomes. Third, creativity may be seen as a treatment outcome in that it reflects the achievement of more open-minded thinking, cognitive and emotional flexibility, as well as diminished psychopathology. We take a hypothesis-generating stance, suggesting future research that could test a potential mediating/moderating role of creativity in psychotherapy.

Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened college students' mental health while simultaneously creating new barriers to traditional in-person care. Teletherapy and online self-guided mental health supports are two potential avenues for addressing unmet mental health needs when face-to-face services are less accessible, but little is known about factors that shape interest in these supports. Participants: 1,224 U.S. undergraduate students (mean age = 20.7; 73% female; 40% White) participated. Methods: Students completed an online questionnaire assessing interest in teletherapy and self-guided supports. Predictors included age, sex, race/ethnicity, sexual minority status, and anxiety and depression symptomatology. Results: Interest rates were 20% and 25% for at-cost supports (teletherapy and online self-help, respectively) and 70% and 72% for free supports (teletherapy and online self-help, respectively). Patterns emerged by age, anxiety symptom severity, and race/ethnicity. Conclusions: Results may inform universities' efforts to optimize students' engagement with nontraditional, digital mental health supports, including teletherapy and self-guided programs. The SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19) pandemic has taken a severe toll on public health, with effects reaching far beyond unprecedented illness and mortality. Levels of mental health difficulties appear to be rising broadly as the pandemic has progressed, both in the general U.S. population and among college students specifically. The COVID-19 pandemic and its repercussions may undermine college student mental health in myriad ways. Concurrently, students now face the potential for serious illness, loss of loved ones, financial strain, social isolation, loss of on-campus resources, and sudden disruption of routines--creating a "perfect storm" for the emergence or exacerbation of psychological distress.

Individuals from Asian American (AA) and international Asian (IA) backgrounds are often lumped together in mental health research, which may obscure important differences in mental health presentation and need. While previous research has examined differences amongst AA and IA students seeking therapy at a single university counseling center, our study sought to better generalize these findings by utilizing a national data set to examine differences in treatment utilization, presenting concerns, overall distress, and improvement in treatment. Our results showed that IA students utilize therapy at lower rates than AA students. However, both groups attended appointments at roughly the same rate. Distress at intake was significantly higher for IA students across most domains measured. Finally, both groups improved in treatment at similar rates, with some differences observed between IA undergraduate and graduate students. We discuss implications for college counseling professionals and urge further research in this domain.

There is currently limited research related to mental health supports for individuals who use AAC, particularly about the actual lived experiences of AAC users who receive mental health services. There may be alterations to mental health services for individuals who use AAC. The aim of this study was to gain the perspectives of AAC users on accessing and receiving mental health services. Three participants who used AAC and received mental health services shared their experiences related to receiving mental health services. Data were analyzed using an inductive approach in which themes were based on participants' experiences. Five major themes were generated: (a) Time, (b) Communication Partner Skills, (c) Advocacy, (d) Means of Expression, and (e) Diagnosis. Participants described factors that positively or negatively impacted their experiences. Participant experiences were examined in light of Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems model. The findings of this study provide insights into the perspectives of individuals who use AAC in accessing mental health services, uncovering various barriers and facilitators within the patient--psychotherapist microsystem. Factors such as time constraints, communication partner skills, advocacy, means of expression, and diagnosis-related challenges significantly influenced the quality of interaction between patients using AAC and their mental health provider. The study also reveals the broader impacts of AAC on interactions within the meso-, exo-, and macro-systems, suggesting the need for improved involvement of speech-language pathologists and policy changes to support effective communication and accessibility for individuals using AAC in mental health settings. Ultimately, future research should involve participants of varying ages, diagnoses, and backgrounds and should include a variety of stakeholders.

There has been a heightened awareness of an increased risk of suicidality among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) due to high rates of suicidal ideation (SI) in this population (11-66%). The current study investigated the rate of parent-endorsed SI and associated clinical features in 48 youths with ASD (Age; M: 12.97 years, SD: 2.33). SI was endorsed in 18.75% of participants. Youth with SI exhibited significantly higher levels of affective problems, externalizing problems, feelings of humiliation and rejection, and symptoms related to perfectionism. Results indicate that co-occurring mental health problems are associated with suicidal ideation and provide relevant targets for psychotherapeutic intervention. This preliminary study in a modest sample suggests the value of further research in larger samples to replicate and generalize these findings.

Aim: This project sought to ascertain views and experiences of people with intellectual disabilities, their carers', and specialist intellectual disability psychiatrists as to use of telepsychiatry consultations. Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic specialist psychiatrists in intellectual disability services in the United Kingdom (UK) have explored and adopted use of telepsychiatry for psychiatric consultations. Method: An easy-read co-designed questionnaire was sent to potential respondents N = 590 potential respondents (N = 280 patients, N = 280 carers), and a separate questionnaire was sent electronically to N = 30 specialist intellectual disability psychiatrists. Findings: Responses were received from N = 192 respondents (N = 68 (24%) patients, N = 98 (35%) carers, and N = 26 (90%)) psychiatrists. Advantages of telepsychiatry cited were flexibility, and it being less disruptive to patients' routines, offering convenient practice and saving travel time and cost. Disadvantages reported included loss of rapport and relationship with patients, and an inability to conduct an effective mental state examination. Conclusion: This survey has produced equivocal evidence as to acceptability of telepsychiatry for all people with intellectual disabilities, carers and psychiatrists cannot be assumed. Some patients may need significant support to enable them to engage with such an approach.
