The biotransformation of poultry (PSW) and swine (SSW) slaughterhouse waste might provide protein feedstuffs, ensuring efficient ruminant systems while safeguarding the environment. The present study aimed to evaluate the potential of PSW and SSW as alternative protein feed for ruminant animals. A total of 24 lambs [25.4 ± 3.13 kg of body weight (BW), mean ± SD] were randomly allocated to one of three groups (n = 8): a control diet formulated with typical protein ingredients (CTRL) and two diets formulated with PSW or SSW meal as a protein source. Dietary inclusion of PSW or SSW did not alter (p = 0.05) dry matter intake or final BW. However, animals fed SSW showed the highest average daily gain (ADG, p = 0.04). In addition, substituting PSW and SSW improved the feed conversation ratio (FCR, p = 0.05). There were no diet effects (p = 0.05) on N intake, while fecal N excretion increased (p = 0.03) with SSW feeding. Compared to CTRL and PSW, ingestion of SSW decreased (p = 0.001) and retained N. The digestibility of crude protein and organic matter remained unchanged (p = 0.05). Additionally, there were no differences (p = 0.05) in potential microbial protein synthesis based on either protein content (SPMp) or energy content (SPMe). Similarly, potential metabolizable protein by protein (PMp) and potential metabolizable energy by protein (PMe) were not affected (p = 0.05). Overall, both PSW and SSW positively influenced the growth performance of ewe lambs. However, further studies are warranted to explore the impact of PWS or SSW feeding on rumen function, nitrogen pollution, and protein escaping the rumen into the intestine in ruminants.

Objective: Two separate trials were conducted to evaluate the digestibility of a novel alternative ingredient, enhanced torula yeast (TY) Cyberlindnera jadinii, in diets for hybrid Striped Bass (HSB; White Bass Morone chrysops × Striped Bass M. saxatilis) and to evaluate graded inclusion levels of this product when replacing soybean products. Methods: In trial 1, the digestibility of TY was determined by testing a reference diet and a TY diet (reference and TY ingredient at an 80:20 ratio). A total of 90 fish were fed the experimental digestibility diets for 21 days, and fecal samples were collected using the stripping technique. In trial 2, a comparative feeding trial evaluated the replacement of soybean meal by TY on a crude protein basis at 50, 100, 200, and 300 g of TY/kg of experimental diet. A total of 150 HSB (18.6 ± 0.21 g/fish [mean + SE]) were distributed among fifteen 110‐L glass aquaria. Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish for 9 weeks. Result: In trial 1, apparent digestibility coefficients for protein, lipid, organic matter, and energy of TY were 0.97, 0.98, 0.75, and 0.75, respectively. The availability of essential amino acids also was generally high, ranging from 0.74 to 0.99. For trial 2, a second‐order polynomial regression indicated that the optimal inclusion levels of TY in diets were 102, 112, and 109 g/kg for weight gain, feed efficiency, and protein conversion efficiency, respectively. However, the muscle yield linearly decreased with the graded inclusion levels of TY. Linear increases in intraperitoneal fat, hepatosomatic index, and whole‐body lipid were observed as the inclusion of TY increased in the diet. Conclusion: In conclusion, nutrients from TY were well utilized by HSB, and it can replace soybean products without affecting growth performance, with the optimal TY inclusion level being 102–112 g/kg of diet. Impact statementThere is an increasing demand for environmentally friendly and cost‐effective alternative feed ingredients because of many fish species produced in intensive aquaculture requiring high‐quality protein ingredients. Simple Summary: Scientists constantly seek techniques that may improve animal-feed usage, because they can reduce environmental impact and increase the profitability of feedlot systems. In beef-cattle production systems, high-performance animals need a greater protein supply that escapes rumen fermentation to be digested in the intestine compared to low-performance animals. This fraction is called rumen undegradable protein (RUP). Cottonseed meal is a possible protein source with an excellent amino-acid profile; however, cottonseed meal has low RUP content, which can be increased by applying heat and xylose. Thus, we submitted this feed to different heat techniques (autoclave, conventional, and microwave ovens), with and without xylose treatment, to increase its RUP content. Our results suggest that the evaluated processing methods may increase cottonseed meal RUP. The best treatments under the experimental conditions were: for the autoclave, xylose-treated cottonseed meal with 8 and 16 min heating; for conventional oven, 90 min heating for xylose-treated cottonseed meal; and for the microwave oven, xylose-treated cottonseed meals with 2, 4, and 6 min heating. Further studies are necessary to confirm the results found here and evaluate the effects of these processed ingredients on ruminal fermentation parameters, animal performance, and economic viability. Simple Summary: Protein is a nutrient with a high cost in beef production. Thus, it is crucial to study techniques that improve animal protein utilization. Furthermore, the more productive the animal, the higher its rumen undegradable protein (RUP) requirements. This protein escapes ruminal fermentation to be digested in the intestine. Peanut meal is a feasible byproduct with excellent protein content but low RUP. This problem is commonly solved by submitting the feed to heat processing methods (such as autoclaves or conventional and microwave ovens) with or without treatment with sugars (such as xylose). Thus, here, we submit peanut meal to these different heat techniques, with and without xylose treatment, aiming to increase its RUP content. Overall, our results suggest that the tested methods effectively increased the RUP content of the peanut meal. The best treatments were as follows: for an autoclave, xylose-treated peanut meal with 24 min of heating; for a conventional oven, 60 min of heating for both xylose-treated and -untreated peanut meals; and for a microwave oven, xylose-treated peanut meals with 4 and 6 min of heating. Nevertheless, further research is recommended to evaluate the effects of these ingredients on the parameters of ruminal fermentation and animal performance. The increased consumption of livestock, poultry, and fish products in people's diet threatens to drive production toward the use of more and more conventional crops in animal feeds. In this context, alleviating the tightening grain crop supply and ensuring the healthy development of animal husbandry through innovations in protein feedstuff production remain considerable challenges. Moringa oleifera is a miracle tree species with abundant nutrients, high protein biological value, and good feeding effect. As a new protein feedstuff, M. oleifera has great potential in alleviating the feeding crisis. Here, we review available literature regarding the characterization of M. oleifera in the field of animal husbandry in terms of nutrient content, digestion, and absorption characteristics, and feeding effects and present current challenges in using M. oleifera as animal feed.

Avaliou-se o desempenho de 240 codornas européias para corte mediante diferentes níveis de inclusão de farinha de penas na dieta. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com 4 tratamentos (0, 3, 6 e 9% de farinha de penas), 5 repetições e 12 animais por unidade experimental. De acordo com os resultados, a farinha de penas pode ser utilizada na dieta de codornas para corte, exceto no período de 1 a 7 dias, em até 9%, sem alterações negativassobre o desempenho dos animais. Entretanto, foi observado que na medida em que houve aumento da inclusão de farinha de penas na dieta, houve redução do consumo de ração e no rendimento de coxa mais sobrecoxa, assim como aumento do rendimento de dorso mais asas.The performance of 240 European quail for meat was evaluated using different levels of feather meal in the diet. The experiment was conducted with a totally randomized design, consisting of four treatments (0, 3, 6, and 9% of feather meal), five repetitions andtwelve animals per experimental unit. Results show that, feather meal can be utilized in the quail for meat diet, except in a period of 1 to 7 days, up to 9%, without significant negative effects on theperformance of the animals. However, as the inclusion of feather flour in the diet increased, a reduction in the consumption of feed and in the thigh yield were observed, as well as an increase in back + wing yield.

It was concluded that protein feedstuff affects ileal AA digestibility and is closely related to dietary fiber characteristics, and a 4-percentage unit reduction in dietary CP had no effect on ileal AA digestibility in growing pigs. Two experiments were conducted to investigate the feasibility of using corn starch as the basal diet to determine the ME of protein feedstuffs using the TME assay in Chinese Yellow chickens. In the first experiment, the TME of corn starch were determined by force-feeding 25 or 40 g of feed. To test the repeatability of the bioassay, the same experiment was repeated 4 times. In the second experiment, the TME of soybean meal and cottonseed meal was determined by considering corn starch as the basal diet, while corn was fed alone to the chickens. To test the accuracy of the TME assay for individual ingredients, the additivity was evaluated by determining the TME of 3 mixed diets: corn-soybean meal diet, corn-cottonseed meal diet, and corn-soybean meal-cottonseed meal diet. In experiment 1, the value of endogenous energy loss was 16.76 to 18.46 kcal/48 h, and no significant differences between the 4 assays were noted. The TME and energy metabolizability of the 25-g corn starch treatment (4.06 kcal/g and 98.06%) were higher than those of the 40-g treatment (3.79 kcal/g and 91.45%; P < 0.01); whereas the CV were less than that of the 40-g treatment, indicating that it is reasonable to use the TME value of the 25-g treatment in feed formulation. In experiment 2, the T1\4E values for corn, soybean meal, and cottonseed meal were 4.02, 3.39, and 2.92 kcal/g, respectively. The observed and predicted TME values of the corn-soybean meal, corn-cottonseed meal, and corn-soybean meal-cottonseed meal diets were in high agreement with differences ranging from -0.02 to 0.01 kcal/g. None of the differences was significant, indicating an accurate measure of the TME of the individual ingredients.
