To ensure a stable and reliable power supply, the valid and timely response of protective relays are indispensable. Through the prevention of fault expansions, potential equipment damage or system collapse can be averted, where their setting is one vital prerequisite for such effective implementations. However, the increasing complexity of distribution power systems results in more challenges for protection tuning strategies. Ergo, this paper presents an ensemble that combines the independent factor evaluation (IFE) and quantum genetic optimization (QGO) models to further optimize the performance of relays according to their distributed tuning environment. In this ensemble, both near and far-end fault characteristics can be incorporated. In the first stage, the IFE dimensional reduction model is deployed for massive heterogeneous input data, where the statistical independence of input signals is calculated, the linear transformation matrix to decouple mixed signals is found, the linear combination of such signals is formed, and the non-Gaussian property to sort them is established. This can ameliorate the following calculation efficiency under those high-dimensional data scenarios. Subsequently, the QGO model is designed to further improve relay settings, where qubit representation is built to reduce required chromosomes, the linear superposition of the optimal solution probability in different states is implemented for a better diversity and convergence performance, and a self-adaption quantum gate is established to dynamically update the qubit chromosome groups and two-state solution combinations. Lastly, an empirical case study is presented, which validates the enhanced convergence, accuracy, and rapidity of the proposed ensemble. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The electrical energy supply of industrial equipment is provided by electrical power stations with high- (HT), medium- (MV) and low-voltage (LV) busbars. Consumers are connected to either MV or LV busbars. In this paper, a real power station was considered, through which the gasoline extraction from the well gas installation is powered. Electric consumers (electric motors) supplied by a MV busbar have active power of 13.54 MW, and those fed by a LV busbar have active power of 6.4 MW. Since electrical consumers operate in explosive environments, the design and operating conditions are more severe than in the case of electrical installations operating in non-explosive environments. The case of a single phase-to-ground fault occurring on the HV transmission lines feeding the power station has been analysed. First, the mathematical models for the calculation of the phase voltages, the dissymmetry and asymmetry coefficients, the reduction coefficient of the plus sequence component, and the effective values of the phase voltages were established. The influence of the source impedance (the equivalent impedance of the HV transmission lines) and of the neutral point configuration of the HV/MV medium-voltage transformer on the calculated quantities was analysed. Then, the results obtained using the established mathematical models were compared with those obtained experimentally by provoking a single-phase-to-ground fault near the HV busbars of the real power station. This study has shown that the de-symmetrisation of the phase voltages of the MV and LV busbars is lower when using the Y/Δ connection for the HV/MV transformer. As a result, it is recommended the Y/Δ connection be used for this transformer, instead of the Y0/Δ connection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• This paper presents a novel power transformer protection algorithm. • Dynamic state estimation was used to detect transformer internal faults. • Comparison was conducted between the new approach and legacy methods. • Proposed scheme improved the protection reliability and sensitivity. This paper presents a comparison of the legacy protective functions of commercial power transformer relays with a proposed dynamic state estimation (DSE) based approach. This DSE-based approach continuously monitors the health status of transformer by checking if all measurements match the dynamic model of the transformer. Any inconsistency between the measurement and model indicates a chance of internal fault. Unlike the traditional relays that require many complex settings and coordination, the DSE-based approach only needs to know minimal simple settings and the protection logic is purely based on the transformer health status. Therefore, it avoids many unnecessary failures caused by wrong settings or improper functions coordination. The proposed DSE-based protection approach has been tested on a 40 MVA, 115/35 kV three-phase transformer, along with a set of legacy protection functions. Laboratory implementation of the hardware-in-the-loop simulation is also presented in the paper. Extensive results validate the better performance of the DSE-based approach over the legacy functions.
