The study objective is to test general- and sport-specific adaption during a single training on the Flexibility Trainer. The device is designed to trigger residual muscle tone decreases of the hip-joint muscles by providing (nearly) isokinetic resistance during a full range of motion strength training in adduction/abduction and flexion/extension direction. Static hip flexion and abduction as well as kinematics of double side kicks were analysed on 15 participants before and after training (or rest for controls) to assess general flexibility and sport-specific movement range. Tests were recorded by a Vicon® motion capturing system. Static hip flexion and abduction as well as leg vector spreading angles (VSA) at different nodes of the kick were selected to determine adaptions of active and passive flexibility. Normalised hip joint moments, movement velocities and VSA were calculated to evaluate the training with the device. ANOVAs with 4-repeated measures and Friedman tests were performed to identify time differences and Bonferroni post-hoc test to identify between-subject effects. Significant differences were found for both static flexibility tests (Flexion = 13.65%; Abduction = 9.94%) and the VSA at specific action phases (≤15.15%). Results indicate that short-term adaptions when training with the Flexibility Trainer are exceeding comparable literature showing improved flexibility and sport-specific performance. This study aims to assess the effect of different instructions on learning proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) skills among physiotherapy students. Twenty-five (n=25) first-year undergraduate physiotherapy students were randomly assigned into two groups. The first group (n=12) was a live demonstration group watching the instructor performing the technique, while the second group (n=13) was a video demonstration group watching a pre-recorded video by the same instructor. Both groups were shown identical eight (8) patterns of PNF skills. After watching the skill, the students in both groups were asked to perform in an isolation room using all the techniques shown to measure their psychomotor skills using the standard Objective Structured Clinical Examination form. The test revealed an insignificant difference in the total performance score between live and video demonstrations of PNF skills among physiotherapy students. Live demonstration group (Mean=59.50±25.69) and video demonstration group (Mean=75.00±13.71), U=48.5, z=-1.605, p>0.05, r=0.321. The finding of this study indicates that live and video demonstration groups are on par in performing the PNF skills. Although video demonstration may reduce time teaching and at the same time ensure the students learn motor skills accordingly. The current study suggests that video demonstration should be employed as an adjunct to pre-, during, and post-live demonstration to augment knowledge retention. This finding can also be a reference for policymakers or higher institutions to decide to change the existing policy for new norms after the breakout of COVID-19 as there is no difference in students' performance between these two groups. BACKGROUND: Maintaining gait stability is an important factor for preventing falls of normal adults. Thus, it is necessary to conduct research on gait variables in normal adults. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we conducted research on the effect of rhythmic exercise using proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) patterns on gait variables in normal adults. METHODS: Thirty-two subjects were divided into two groups, the training and control groups, with 16 subjects in each group. We measured various gait variables step time difference (STD), step length difference (SLD), single support difference (SSD), stance phase difference (STPD) and swing phase difference (SWPD) for the pre-test and post-test in each group. RESULTS: As a result of paired t-tests on various gait variables (STD, SLD, SSD, STPD, SWPD) of the training and control group, the training group showed significance in SLD, STPD and STD and the control group had no significance in all items. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, which verified the effect of rhythmic exercise using the PNF patterns on the gait variables of normal adults, there was statistical significance in SLD, STPD, and STD showing that dynamic exercise using the PNF pattern is helpful in improving the walking ability of normal adults. BACKGROUND: Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic progressive disease that impresses a noticeable burden to society and healthcare systems. Physical exercise constitutes the first-line hip OA treatment approach, nevertheless, there is currently no gold standard method to treat this disease. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) on functioning in patients with hip OA. METHOD: A pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) was carried out on patients with painful bilateral hip OA with a body mass index (BMI) < 30 kg/m2. After the randomization, the experimental group was treated with PNF protocol and the control group with conventional physical therapy (10 sessions of manual therapy, 5 sessions/week for 2 weeks). The Harris Hip Score (HHS) was the primary outcome, whereas we assessed as secondary outcomes: pain, range of motion, and muscle strength of hip, physical performance, and quality of life. RESULTS: Twenty patients (40 hips) were enrolled and randomized into two groups: PNF group (mean age: 70.7 ± 8.07; BMI: 25.1 ± 3.07; 7 females and 3 males) and control group (mean age: 74.9 ± 10.72; BMI: 26.8 ± 3.78; 6 females and 4 males). The results showed a statistically significant improvement of HHS in the study group (T1: 90.6 ± 5.63) than in the control group (T1: 77.3 ± 10.9) (between-group p value < 0.001). Three months after the treatment we have statistically significant maintenance in the PNF group (T2:89.6 ± 6.32, within-group Δ T0-T2 p < 0.01) while the control group did not maintain the improvements recorded at T1 (T2: 71.4 ± 15.8). CONCLUSION: The results of this pilot RCT showed that incorporating PNF exercises into the rehabilitation program yielded notable enhancements in improving lower limb function, strength and ROM in hip OA patients. Nonetheless, further prospective studies including wider sample size are needed to implement scientific knowledge on this physical therapy approach, in patients with hip osteoarthritis. BACKGROUND: To measure hamstring flexibility, the active knee extension (AKE) test is preferred over the straight leg raise (SLR) test as it can be used to measure hamstring flexibility more selectively. However, hamstring stretching is primarily conducted in the SLR position (maximal hip flexion in the supine position) as it allows for maximal hip flexion in the supine position. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching in the AKE position (maximal knee extension with 90∘ flexion of the hip in the supine position) on hip, knee, and ankle flexibility. METHODS: SLR, AKE, and active dorsiflexion (ADF) tests were used to determine the range of motion (ROM) before (pre-ROM) and after (post-ROM) stretching. PNF stretching consisted of maximal isometric knee flexion at the end range with external resistance to prevent knee flexion. One set of PNF stretches (five trials of six seconds each) was conducted. RESULTS: The post-ROMs of hip, knee, and ankle measured via the SLR, AKE, and ADF tests, respectively, were significantly higher than the pre-ROMs. CONCLUSIONS: The improvement in knee flexibility was greater than the improvement in hip and ankle flexibility. The AKE position is recommended in clinical settings during PNF stretching for individuals with hamstring tightness. Furthermore, PNF stretching in the AKE position increases the ADF ROM. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an active recovery technique based on proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) on parameters indicating fatigue among male and female karate athletes. This research was a 2 × 2 factorial design in 60 karate athletes (50% male), assigned into four groups (i.e., male active recovery [AR], female AR, male passive recovery [PR], and female PR groups). Pre-test HR (heart rate), RPE (rating of perceived exertion), and TQR (total quality recovery) were assessed after a 60-minute submaximal karate-specific exercise. It was followed by a 15-minute recovery, in which the AR groups conducted a 2.5-minute light-intensity PNF and post-test. Paired t -tests were used to compare the pre- and post-test data in each group. Two-way ANOVA was used to assess the post-test data using recovery types and sex as fixed factors and pre-test as the covariate. Significant reductions in HR from pre- to post-test were found in all groups (P < 0.01). No main and interaction effect, however, was found for post-test HR. Improvements in RPE from pre-test to post-test were also found in all groups (P < 0.01). Post-test RPE, however, was significantly lower in the AR (P = 0.002) and in males (P = 0.005). Significant improvements in the post- from pre-test in TQR were also found in all groups (P < 0.01). Post-test QTR is significantly better in the AR (P < 0.001) and in both sexes (P = 0.368). Both PNF-based recovery and passive recovery improve HR, RPE, and TQR. Although PNF-based recovery does not improve the post-test HR compared to PR, it improves RPE and TQR compared to PR. (1) Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping on arm swing, balance, and gait parameters among chronic stroke patients. (2) Methods: Twenty-eight participants were randomized into proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping during gait training (n = 14) and gait training (n = 14) groups. The proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping during gait training group employed proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping during 15 min treadmill-based gait training five times a week for four weeks, while the gait training group underwent the same gait training without proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping. Arm swing angle was measured using the Image J program, static balance was assessed with an AMTI force plate, dynamic balance was evaluated through the Timed Up and Go test, and gait parameters were recorded using the GAITRite system and the Dynamic Gait Index. (3) Results: After 4 weeks of training, the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping during gait training group exhibited significant improvements in all variables compared to the baseline (p < 0.05), whereas the gait training group did not show statistically significant differences in any variables (p > 0.05). Background: Chronic neck pain is known to be caused by the weakness of the deep neck flexors and disturbances in the mechanoreceptors and the proprioceptors of the cervical spine. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) is hypothesized to balance the relative stiffness and weakness of the muscles and activate the mechanoreceptors and proprioceptors. Objective: To investigate PNF techniques and the craniocervical flexor training (CCFT) techniques for pain and function in chronic neck pain. Methods: A randomized clinical trial was conducted on 66 chronic mechanical neck pain patients randomly assigned to either the PNF or CCFT groups using block randomization for a duration of 4 weeks. Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), Neck disability Index (NDI) and Active cervical range of motion (ACROM) were measured at baseline and after 4 weeks of intervention. Data were analysed using independent t test and MANOVA. Results: The mean difference scores for NPRS and NDI were 2.18 and 15.72 in PNF group and 2.26 and 15.76 in the CCFT groups, respectively. Both the groups showed a change that was statistically significant. Also, the mean differences for the ACROM in all the planes in both the groups were statistically significant. However, the between group changes did not reveal any statistical significance in this study except for the right rotation in the CCFT group (p = 0.01). Conclusions: This study concluded that the PNF treatment is also beneficial to pain and function in treating chronic mechanical neck pain patients as its results stand similar to the CCFT treatment, which is already established to be a reliable tool to treat this condition. Background: Stroke is the quickly developing clinical indication of a focal disruption of brain function that lasts more than 24 hours or results in death, with no discernible cause other than vascular origin. Despite the fact that the majority of patients are able to walk again, 30% to 60% of survivors are no longer able to use the arm that was injured. CIMT aims at improves both the motor and functional capacities of a paretic arm. PNF exercises alter the order in which muscles are stimulated, increases the efficiency of joint movement. Purpose: To compare the effectiveness of Constraint Induced Movement Therapy and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation for treating upper extremity functions in stroke. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 participants were selected from Sree Annai Physiotherapy Clinic Chennai. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subjects willing to participate were allocated into two groups Constraint Induced Movement Therapy group and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation group. The participants underwent Pre-test measurement with Fugl-Meyer Assessment Upper Extremity FMA-UE and were repeated for Post-test measurement. Study period: November 2022 to April 2023. Results: When comparing the mean differences of the two groups, Constraint Induced Movement Therapy group displays a greater difference than Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation group. Therefore, it can be said that Constraint Induced Movement Therapy is more advantageous for the upper extremity functions than Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation. Background Today, stroke is the principal cause of demise in both developed and developing countries. There are different techniques used to treat patients with sub-acute stroke. Trunk muscles play a key role, i.e. in keeping the spine and trunk in place. This stabilization requires moving the head and extremities freely and selectively. The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of dynamic neuromuscular stabilization (DNS), neurodevelopmental techniques (NDT) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) on trunk and gait parameters in the subacute phase of stroke. This study is intended to ascertain the efficacy of all three approaches individually and to compare the effectiveness of DNS, NDT and PNF on trunk and gait parameters. Furthermore, the findings of this study could be used to assist post-stroke survivors in their early recovery and improve their level of independence. Methods In this interventional study, participants will be divided into three groups, and in each group, 20 patients will be assigned randomly to each group using the sequentially numbered opaque sealed envelope method. Group A patients will be given DNS, Group B will be given NDT, and Group C will be given PNF. The patients will be given treatment for five days for four consecutive weeks. Outcome measures that will be used are trunk impairment scale (TIS), dynamic gait index (DGI) and gait parameters. Data will be collected before and after the 4-week treatment period. Conclusions After the study, a conclusion will be drawn regarding which treatment technique is most suitable among all the three strategies for treating stroke patients if the hypothesis of the study is found valid. Objective：To investigate the characteristics and differences in clinical efficacy of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation(PNF) and lower limb robotics in improving lower limb motor function, walking speed, and automatic balance function in stroke patients. Method：Seventy-two stroke patients with hemiplegia who met the criteria were randomly assigned to the conventional group(n=25), PNF group(n=24), and lower limb robotics group(n=23). The treatment lasted for 4 weeks. Before and after treatment, the Fugl-Meyer assessment lower extremity scale(FMA-LE), 10m maximum walking speed test(MWS), and neuro com balance manager system were used to evaluate lower limb movement function, walking speed and automatic balance function. Result：After 4 weeks of treatment, the FMA-LE score of PNF group was significantly better than that of conventional group(P<0.05) and lower limb robotics group(P=0.001), the MWS score in the lower limb robotics group was significantly better than that in the conventional group(P<0.05) and the PNF group(P= 0.001), and the MWS score in the PNF group was significantly better than that in the conventional group（P<0.05). The lower limb robotics group showed significantly better scores in the reaction time, movement velocity, endpoint travel distance, maximum excursions and directional control index score than the conventional group(P<0.05) and the PNF group(P<0.05), while the directional control index score in the PNF group was significantly better than that in the conventional group（P=0.049). Conclusion：Manual PNF therapy and lower limb robotics training have their own clinical efficacy in stroke patients, with PNF technique being more effective in improving lower limb motor function, while lower limb robotics have an advantage in automatic balance function and walking speed. Aims Stroke is a localized and sudden neurological disorder in the brain that can decrease muscle strength. This study aimed to determine the effect of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation exercises on the muscle strength of stroke patients. Materials & Methods This pre-post clinical trial with a randomized control group was conducted in 2017-2018. Patients with stroke were referred to the Neurology Department of Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Yasuj City, Iran. Sixty eligible stroke patients were selected through convenience sampling and assigned to intervention and control groups using random block allocation. Data were collected through a muscle strength questionnaire at baseline, immediately post-intervention, and four weeks after the last intervention. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 21 software, employing Wilcoxson and Mann-Whitney U. Findings There was no statistically significant difference in muscle strength between the research samples before and immediately after the intervention. However, one month after the intervention, a statistically significant difference was reported between the two groups (p<0.05). The difference in the mean muscle strength was significant in the test group (p=0.001). Background: Stroke is a neurological disability produced by vascular-related acute focal injury to the central nervous system and is one of the leading causes of disability in adults, and it is frequently accompanied by motor skill loss. Patients suffering from hemiplegia after a stroke are more prone to have fall and are more likely to experience further injury due to irregular gait, diminished muscular strength, and functional impairment. In the affected upper limb of the hemiplegic stroke, spasticity in the shoulder girdle causes scapular malalignment, which reduces the functional mobility and stability of the upper limb. This is reflected as the reduced reciprocal arm swing during walking, which is further reinforced by an abnormal synergy pattern on the affected side. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) is a treatment strategy that stimulates motor activity and enhances control and function of the neuromuscular system. This research protocol is intended to assess and evaluate the effects of applying scapular and upper limb PNF along with conventional physiotherapy treatment to subacute-stroke patients on their scapular alignment, upper limb function, and gait. Methods: A total of 40 individuals in total will be allocated equally into two groups, group-A (experimental) and group-B (control). Both groups will be receiving treatment for six weeks with five sessions per week. Each patient will be examined both before and after therapy using the Palpation Meter (PALM), the Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Upper Extremity (FMA-UE), 10-Meter Walk Test, Handheld dynamometer (10MWT), and Dynamic gait index (DGI). After six weeks of therapy, the results will be assessed and the data will be analyzed before and after the intervention using a paired t-test to discover within-group differences in measurements. Lower back pain that has lasted longer than 12 weeks is referred to as chronic lower back pain (CLBP). Lumbar extensor deterioration is a typical characteristic of CLBP. Muscular degeneration could impact proprioception along with reducing strength and endurance, which would further exacerbate concerns about balance. Along with force-matching ability, lower back muscles working together is frequently compromised in CLBP patients. The prime goals of bodily workout in administration of long-lasting lower back ache are advance muscular strength and flexibility, to re-establish injured tissues and to contribute easy engaging in daily tasks. Proprioceptive sense is reduced in CLBP patients due to mechanical alterations in their musculature. Hence, in order to develop an efficient management plan, it is crucial for patients and physiotherapists to understand the alterations that result from the shift in trunk muscular endurance in people with CLBP and how they impact the functional level. Outlined here is a proposed study aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of consecutive loop TheraBand (CLX) adjunct to proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and conventional physiotherapy exercises on subjects with CLBP in a two-arm parallel superiority randomized clinical trial in reducing pain and enhancing balance. The participants will be split into two groups for equal allocation, after which the intervention CLX adjunct to PNF will be provided to one group and conventional physiotherapy exercises will be provided for another group for six weeks, a total of six days a week, for 50 minutes per day. After six weeks of intervention, the results will be assessed for pain and balance. The implementation of this physiotherapy technique in treatment could occur if the study’s hypothesis is successful in CLBP. Static stretching and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching techniques can modulate specific neural mechanisms to improve the range of motion. However, the effects of modulation of these neural pathways on changes in the range of motion with static stretching remain unclear. Patterned electrical stimulation of the sensory nerve induces plastic changes in reciprocal la inhibition. The present study examined the effects of patterned electrical stimulation and static stretching on a range of motion and passive torque in plantarflexion muscles. The subjects were 14 young men (age 20.8 ± 1.3 years). The effects of patterned electrical stimulation (10 pulses at 100 Hz every 1.5 s) or uniform electrical stimulation (one pulse every 150 ms) to the common peroneal nerve for 20 min on reciprocal la inhibition of the Hoffman reflex (H-reflex) were examined. Reciprocal la inhibition was evaluated as short-latency suppression of the soleus H-reflex by conditioning stimulation of the common peroneal nerve. Then, the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (patterned electrical stimulation or uniform electrical stimulation) or prolonged resting (without electrical stimulation) and static 3-min stretching on the maximal dorsiflexion angle and passive torque were investigated. The passive ankle dorsiflexion test was performed on an isokinetic dynamometer. Stretch tolerance and stiffness of the muscle-tendon unit were evaluated by the peak and slope of passive torques, respectively. Patterned electrical stimulation significantly increased reciprocal la inhibition of soleus H-reflex amplitude (9.7 ± 6.1%), but uniform electrical stimulation decreased it significantly (19.5 ± 8.8%). The maximal dorsiflexion angle was significantly changed by patterned electrical stimulation (4.0 ± 1.4°), uniform electrical stimulation (3.8 ± 2.3°), and stretching without electrical stimulation (2.1 ± 3.3°). The increase in stretch tolerance was significantly greater after patterned electrical stimulation and uniform electrical stimulation than after stretching without electrical stimulation. Stiffness of the muscle-tendon unit was significantly decreased by patterned electrical stimulation, uniform electrical stimulation, and stretching without electrical stimulation. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbandingan efektivitas proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) dan Animal Pose Stetching terhadap fleksibilitas otot hamstring pada atlet Klub olahraga prestasi Futsal Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ). Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh atlet Klub olahraga prestasi futsal UNJ yang berjumlah 130 atlet, setelah itu dilakukan pengambilan sampel menggunakan teknik purposive sampling, dan didapatkan sampel sebanyak 20 atlet. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimen dan desain penelitian yang di gunakan adalah Two Groups Pretest-Posttest Design, yaitu mencari perbandingan efektifitas dengan metode penelitian pretest dan posttest. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan peningkatan pada grup PNF sebesar 2,9 cm dan grup animal pose stretching sebesar 2,4 cm terdapat perbedaan 0,5 cm. Didapatkan hasil uji thitung sebesar 0,569 dengan nilai sig. sebesar 0,577, karena nilai t hitung < ttabel atau 0,569 > 2,101 dan nilai sig. (0,569) > 0,05 (α = 5%), sehingga disimpulkan bahwan ada perbedaan yang tidak signifikan antara grup PNF dan animal pose stretching untuk peningkatan fleksibilitas otot hamstring pada anggota klub futsal UNJ. Cerebellar ataxia is caused by several hereditary or acquired aetiologies that eventually lead to abnormalities in the cerebellum. Patients with cerebellar ataxia may experience balance issues, eye movement abnormalities, limb incoordination, gait instability, and speech impairment as a result. The available treatment options for cerebellar ataxia are rather limited, causing many patients to struggle with daily activities. Although the success rate of a range of therapeutic interventions has been determined, evidence-based exercise guidelines for the treatment of balance disorders and associated problems in people with cerebellar ataxia are currently unavailable. Thus, physiotherapists must explore novel approaches to successfully manage the symptoms of ataxia and further improve the quality of life of patients. The current study protocol will provide new insight as no article available to date has looked at trunk and pelvis stabilization exercise programme as an intervention for treating cerebellar ataxia. We hereby propose a study, which aims to investigate the impact of conventional exercises and trunk and pelvis stabilization exercises along with conventional exercises on subjects with Cerebellar ataxia in a two-arm randomized controlled trial on improving SARA, TIS, BBS, Barthel Index, WHOQOL The total participants will be divided into two-arm parallel groups and the intervention will be given for complete 6 weeks, 5 days in a week. The outcome measure will be evaluated at baseline and the end of 6 weeks. The results will be evaluated after 6 weeks. If the hypothesis of our study proves to be effective, then this physiotherapy intervention could be included in the management of cerebellar ataxia

(1) Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping on arm swing, balance, and gait parameters among chronic stroke patients. (2) Methods: Twenty-eight participants were randomized into proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping during gait training (n = 14) and gait training (n = 14) groups. The proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping during gait training group employed proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping during 15 min treadmill-based gait training five times a week for four weeks, while the gait training group underwent the same gait training without proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping. Arm swing angle was measured using the Image J program, static balance was assessed with an AMTI force plate, dynamic balance was evaluated through the Timed Up and Go test, and gait parameters were recorded using the GAITRite system and the Dynamic Gait Index. (3) Results: After 4 weeks of training, the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping during gait training group exhibited significant improvements in all variables compared to the baseline (p < 0.05), whereas the gait training group did not show statistically significant differences in any variables (p > 0.05). (4) Conclusions: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern kinesio taping during gait training in enhancing arm swing angle, balance, and gait parameters.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) has deleterious effects on quality of life and vocation. A partial or complete loss of sensory and motor functions below the site of injury is a potential clinical sign of SCI. Trunk and pelvic control are crucial for balance and gait to perform vocational tasks of daily living. In this case report, a 40-year-old male with traumatic incomplete paraplegia (AIS Grade C, neurological level T6) received 45 min of intervention per session, which included pelvic proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation combined with core strengthening exercises 5 times a week for 4 weeks. Baseline and postassessments were done for trunk control with the trunk control test for SCI, balance with the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and the SCI-functional ambulation inventory (SCI-FAI), and gait with the walking index for SCI II (WISCI). After 4 weeks of intervention, there were significant differences between baseline and postintervention scores on the trunk control test for SCI (16–18), WISCI (Level 1–2), SCI-FAI (03–06), and BBS (04–08). This is the first case report that enabled and promoted potentiate intervention to improve trunk control, balance, and gait in paraplegics. Elevated levels of lactic acid in the blood and muscles following intense training or competition can have detrimental effects on physical performance and increase the likelihood of injury. Therefore, it is crucial to identify effective recovery techniques to mitigate fatigue promptly. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of sports massage and the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) method on the recovery of lactic acid in athletes. This study employed a true-experimental design using a pretest-posttest without a control group. A sample of 20 female futsal athletes was divided into two groups: the sports massage group (SM) consisting of 10 participants, and the PNF method group also comprising 10 participants. Lactic acid levels were assessed before exercise, immediately after completing the anaerobic exercise, and immediately after the recovery intervention based on the respective group allocation. The results showed an increase in lactic acid after anaerobic exercise in both groups. The SM group experienced a significant decrease compared to the PNF group which did not experience a significant decrease. A significant disparity was observed in the mean lactic acid levels between the two groups in the post-test data. In conclusion, the application of sports massage following anaerobic exercise proves to be effective in reducing lactic acid concentrations in futsal athletes compared to the PNF method. The findings of this study are anticipated to yield advantages for coaches, sports medical teams, and athletes by lowering lactic acid levels, enhancing sports performance, and mitigating injury risks. Practically, the findings underscore the potential benefits of incorporating a 15-minute sports massage into the recovery routine of female futsal players.

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of core strengthening exercises and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques on functional performance and balance among patients with haemiplegic stroke. Method: The quasi-experimental study was conducted from March to August 2021 at Imran Idrees Hospital, Sialkot, Pakistan, and comprised stroke patients of either gender who were divided into proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation group A and core strengthening group B. In both groups, the treatment was given for 6 weeks with 5 30-minute sessions per week. Functional performance and balance were measured using Barthel Index and Berg Balance Scale. Data were collected at baseline, 3 weeks and 6 weeks. Data was analysed using SPSS 22. Results: Of the 48 patients, 24(50%) were in each of the 2 groups. There were 39(81.25%) male and 9(18.75%) female subjects with an overall mean age of 45±4.919 years. Mean Barthel Index score in group A was 62.50±7.22 at baseline and 74.79±7.14 after 6 weeks. Introduction. To compare the effects of gait training with and without proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) on balance and gait in chronic stroke individuals. Methods. It was a double-blind randomized control trial conducted at University Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation clinic, Lahore, Pakistan from March 2020 to November 2020 using non-probability convenient sampling. Sixty patients in the chronic phase of a stroke, aged between 35 and 85 years, were randomly allocated into two groups. Group A received proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation-based gait training along with routine physical therapy, while group B received only gait training and routine physical therapy. Berg balance scale (BBS) and GAITRite platinum were used as measuring equipment. The rules and regulations set by the ethical committee of the university of Lahore were followed. Data was analysed by a statistical package for social sciences, version 24. Results. Balance improved more significantly in group A than in group B (p < 0.05). Participants improved significantly in terms of stride length (p < 0.001), step length (p < 0.001), % swing phase (p < 0.001), BBS (p < 0.001), cadence (p < 0.001) and velocity (p < 0.001), and decreased significantly for ambulation time (p < 0.001), and % stance phase of gait cycle (p < 0.001), over the treatment period within both groups. The results of stride length, step length, ambulation time, cadence, velocity, % of swing and stance phase were insignificant for between-group comparisons. Conclusions. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation-based gait training along with routine physical therapy is more effective in improving balance as compared to routine physical therapy alone. BACKGROUND: Mechanical neck pain is most prevalent in this era, fascia is the soft tissue component of the connective tissue network that pervades the human body and creates a continuous, three-dimensional structural support matrix throughout the entire body .stretching the fascia with the principles of fascial stretch therapy enables us to treat those patients. Methodology: 15 Subjects were assigned in single group and underwent fascial stretch therapy -Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern technique for a period of 1 weeks and this study used a purposeful sampling technique to assign patients. CONCLUSION: The data were analysed using paired T test at 5% level of significance. There was a significant improvement on pain and range of motion in the group. Abstract Background and objectives Frozen shoulder is a common painful disease of the shoulder joint characterized by structural changes in the shoulder joint, restricting both active and passive shoulder joint activities. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) effectively improved and maintained the range of motion; however, it is not clear whether it can improve the shoulder joint structure in patients with frozen shoulder. This pilot study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) observation to assess the improvement of the local structure of the shoulder joint upon PNF treatment to elucidate a target based on structure for the treatment of frozen shoulder. Materials and methods Forty-eight patients with frozen shoulder were randomly divided into the traditional manual therapy group and the PNF technique group. Changes in the thicknesses of the coracohumeral ligament (CHL) and capsule in axillary recess (CAR) of the shoulder joint were observed via MRI upon admission and at 4 weeks after treatment. A visual analog scale (VAS) and passive shoulder range of motion (ROM) at abduction, anteflexion and external rotation position were used to evaluate the improvement of shoulder joint pain and function in the initial, mid-term, and discharge of the two groups of patients. Results The primary outcome results shown that the PNF joint mobilization significantly reduced the thickness of the CHL (p = 0.0217) and CAR (p = 0.0133). Compared with simple joint mobilization, The mid-term and discharge rehabilitation assessment results showed that PNF has a better effect on shoulder pain. Stroke is a serious cause of premature death among adults and the reason for much long-term disability. Understanding the mechanisms of disability and the potential for recovery of stroke patients should be one of the highest priorities of the health care system. Neurorehabilitation of post-stroke patients focuses on functional recovery by activating mechanisms of natural reorganization. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and mirror therapy (MT) are neurorehabilitation methods activating brain plasticity, and their clinical utility for stroke survivors is still under studied. This study compared two neurorehabilitation methods using PNF or MT on functional recovery in patients after a first-ever ischemic stroke. This prospective and interventional randomized clinical study involved a group of 50 patients (34 males and 16 females) with first-ever ischemic stroke, aged 48–82 years being in the recovery-compensation stage and admitted to the unit for early post-stroke rehabilitation. Patients were randomly enrolled into two groups in terms of rehabilitation method used: PNF (n = 26) or MT (n = 24). Barthel Index (BI) was used for assessing functional status at baseline (M0), and 3 (M1) and 6 weeks (M2) after intervention), and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) was used for assessing a disability level at baseline (M0), and 6 weeks (M2) after the intervention. Statistically significant differences were noted in the two study groups in BI (main effect: <0.05). There was an improvement in the MT group between M1 and M2 by 3.6 points, M1 and M3 by 6.9 points, and M2 and M3 by 6.9 points. For the PNF group, there were differences between M1 and M2 by 4.1 points, M1 and M3 by 7.2 points, and M2 and M3 by 3.1 points. Moreover, statistically significant differences were noted in both groups in mRS (main effect: p < 0.05). There was a decrease of 2.2 points in the MT group between M1 and M2 measurements. For the PNF group, there were differences between M1 and M2 by 2.3 points. There were no statistically significant differences between the MT and PNF groups in both BI and mRS scores (p < 0.05). Manual stretching procedures have the potential to improve pulmonary function, reduce fatigue, and improve chest mobility. However, evidence regarding their effectiveness in post-COVID-19 population remains unknown. This study explores the effectiveness of two different types of stretching techniques on pulmonary function, fatigue, and chest expansion in post-COVID-19 population. Materials and Methodology: Forty post-COVID-19 patients with mild and moderate impairment were divided into two groups (20 each). Group A received hold relax proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) pectoral stretching while Group B received chest mobility exercises for 20 min each for 7 sessions. The outcomes measures were pulmonary function test, fatigue, and chest expansion. Results: Significant within-group differences for all outcome measures were seen at the end of intervention. Between-group analysis showed a significant statistical difference in few parameters of pulmonary function testing and chest expansion in Group A than Group B. However, no statistical significance on Fatigue after the 7 sessions of intervention. Conclusions: In COVID-19 survivors with mild and moderate impairment, hold relax PNF stretching than chest mobility exercises has a significant effect on improving pulmonary function, reducing fatigue, and improving chest expansion.

Clinical Scenario: Stretching is applied for the purposes of injury prevention, increasing joint range of motion (ROM), and increasing muscle extensibility. Many researchers have investigated various methods and techniques to determine the most effective way to increase joint ROM and muscle extensibility. Despite the numerous studies conducted, controversy still remains within clinical practice and the literature regarding the best methods and techniques for stretching. Focused Clinical Question: Is proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching more effective than static stretching for increasing hamstring muscle extensibility through increased hip ROM or increased knee extension angle (KEA) in a physically active population? Summary of Key Findings: Five studies met the inclusion criteria and were included. All 5 studies were randomized control trials examining mobility of the hamstring group. The studies measured hamstring ROM in a variety of ways. Three studies measured active KEA, 1 study measured passive KEA, and 1 study measured hip ROM via the single-leg raise test. Of the 5 studies, 1 study found greater improvements using PNF over static stretching for increasing hip flexion, and the remaining 4 studies found no significant difference between PNF stretching and static stretching in increasing muscle extensibility, active KEA, or hip ROM. Clinical Bottom Line: PNF stretching was not demonstrated to be more effective at increasing hamstring extensibility compared to static stretching. The literature reviewed suggests both are effective methods for increasing hip-flexion ROM. Objective: To assess the effect of pelvic patterns of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF‐concept) on pelvic floor muscles (PFM) recruitment, as well as the electromyographic activity of muscles synergic to the pelvic floor in healthy women. Methods: Observational study conducted with 31 women aged between 18 and 35 years, with mean age of 23.3 ± 3.2 (22.1–24.4). PFM activity was monitored by surface electromyography during the combination of isotonics technique of four pelvic patterns of PNF‐concept (i.e., anterior elevation, posterior depression, anterior depression, and posterior elevation). The electromyographic signal was analyzed using root mean square amplitude. Two‐way repeated measures analysis of variance was performed to analyze differences in PFM activity between types of contraction (i.e., concentric, isometric, and eccentric) and the four pelvic patterns. Results: PFM activity did not differ among the four pelvic pattens. However, PFM activity was significantly different between the combination of isotonics technique and baseline, F(1.6, 48.2) = 71.5; p < 0.000, with a large effect size (partial ƞ² = 0.705). Concentric (22.4 µV ± 1.1), isometric (17.3 µV ± 0.6), and eccentric (15 µV ± 0.5) contractions of combination of isotonics technique increased PFM activity compared with baseline (10.8 µV ± 0.4) in all pelvic patterns. By analyzing the electromyographic activity of the muscles synergistic to the pelvic floor, there is effect of the interaction of the type of contraction, the pelvic pattern of the PNF concept, and the synergistic muscles on the myoelectric activity of the external anal sphincter, F(3.2, 96.5) = 5.6; p < 0.000, with a large magnitude of effect (partial ƞ² = 0.15). In the anterior elevation pattern, the muscles synergistic to the pelvic floor present synergy in phase with the PFM, and in the posterior patterns there was a decrease in the activity level of all synergistic muscles, without changing the activity level of the PFM. Conclusion: PFM activity did not differ among the four pelvic patterns of PNF‐concept. Nonetheless, the combination of isotonics technique showed a significant effect on PFM compared with baseline, with greater PFM activity during concentric contraction. BACKGROUND: Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) is one of the neurophysiological techniques aimed at reducing pain and disability. This systematic review objective addresses the current evidence on PNF techniques' effectiveness in chronic low back and neck pain. METHODS: Literature search in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Wiley and Ovid databases were searched until 2021. The content of the titles and the abstracts were analysed to gather information about the effects of PNF in chronic back and neck pain with outcomes of pain and disability. The quality of the studies was analysed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal score. Meta-analysis was performed on Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for chronic low back pain and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) for disability. RESULTS: Nine studies addressed the different PNF based interventions on chronic low back pain, with a total of 416 participants. The intervention period ranged 3–6 weeks, and two studies conducted 12-weeks follow-up. Many studies measured pain using a VAS and NRS, whereas the disability through ODI and RMDQ. The JBI score ranged from 6/13 to 11/13. None of the PNF studies treated chronic neck pain. CONCLUSION: PNF might be beneficial for reducing low back pain and related disability. The long term effects of PNF on chronic low back pain, and also to determine its benefits on chronic neck pain are warranted in future studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation for chronic low back pain. Materials and methods: Eleven databases were searched from their inception through January 2021. The primary outcomes were pain intensity, individual activities, quality of life, and adverse events. Results: Four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with 184 patients (mean age: 37.8±3.1 years; range, 35 to 50 years) met the inclusion criteria. The pooled effect size showed proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, relieved pain (standard means difference [SMD]: -0.835, 95% CI: -1.139 to -0.531, p<0.001, n=4), and improved individual activity (Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire, SMD: -1.765, 95% CI: -2.642 to -0.888, p<0.001, n=2; Oswestry Disability Index, SMD: -0.893, 95% CI: -1.434 to -0.352, p=0.001, n=1) for chronic low back pain (CLBP). Conclusion: This study verified that proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation could relieve pain and improve individual activities without serious adverse events in patients with CLBP; however, it should be cautiously recommended due to the small number of included RCTs. The present study aims to determine the potential benefits of PNF on balance and gait function in patients with chronic stroke by using a systematic review and meta-analysis. Systematic review in the following databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), Cochrane Library and Google Scholar. Studies up to September 2020 are included. A systematic database search was conducted for randomized control trials (RCTs) that investigated the effects of PNF intervention in patients with chronic stroke using balance and gait parameters as outcome measures. The primary outcomes of interest were Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Functional Reach Test (FRT), Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) and 10-Meter Walking Test (10MWT). Nineteen studies with 532 participants were included, of which twelve studies with 327 participants were included for meta-analysis. When the data were pooled, PNF made statistically significant improvements in balance with BBS, FRT and TUG (p < 0.05) or gait velocity with 10MWT (p < 0.001) when compared to the control. This review indicates that PNF is a potential treatment strategy in chronic stroke rehabilitation on balance and gait speed. To compare the effectiveness of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and myofascial release technique in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome on pain, range of motion, muscle strength, quality of life, functionality and disability. Thirty patients were randomly divided into two groups: proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation group (n = 15) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation combined with myofascial release technique group (n = 15). Both treatment methods were performed 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Pain severity was assessed by Visuel Analog Scale, range of motion by a goniometer, muscle strength by digital hand dynamometer, quality of life by Nottingham health profile, functionality by arm, shoulder and hand problems questionnaire, disability by shoulder pain and disability index. All measurements were used before and after treatments. Pain severity, range of motion and muscle strength were also evaluated after the first session. After the treatment, shoulder pain, range of motion, muscle strength, functionality and disability were improved in two groups (p < 0.05). Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation showed improvement in pain, whereas myofascial release technique improved pain, physical activity, emotional state, sleep and total dimensions of life quality (p < 0.05). Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation was more effective in reducing activity pain, whereas myofascial release technique was more effective in increasing flexion, external and internal rotation range of motion, flexion and abduction muscle strength after the first session (p < 0.05). The combined application of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and myofascial release technique has a more acute and cumulative positive effect on pain, range of motion, muscle strength, functionality, disability and quality of life in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome. This study aimed at identifying the values of some kinematic variables in the shuttle run test (4 × 10 m) in different ways to warm up, as well as to identify the differences in those values depending on the warm-up method used. To achieve this, the researchers used the descriptive approach on a sample of female students (n = 10) participating in the King Abdullah II Fitness Award for the year 2017/2018 in the age group (11) years. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) effectively improved and maintained the range of motion; however, it is not clear whether it can improve the shoulder joint structure in patients with frozen shoulder. This pilot study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) observation to assess the improvement of the local structure of the shoulder joint upon PNF treatment to elucidate a target based on structure for the treatment of frozen shoulder.Materials and Methods: Forty-eight patients with frozen shoulder were randomly divided into the traditional manual therapy group and the PNF technique group. Changes in the thicknesses of the coracohumeral ligament (CHL) and capsule in axillary recess (CAR) of the shoulder joint were observed via MRI upon admission and at 4 weeks after treatment. A visual analog scale (VAS) and passive shoulder range of motion (ROM) at abduction, anteflexion and external rotation position were used to evaluate the improvement of shoulder joint pain and function in the initial, mid-term, and discharge of the two groups of patients.Results: The primary outcome results shown that the PNF joint mobilization significantly reduced the thickness of the CHL (p = 0.0217) and CAR (p = 0.0133). Compared with simple joint mobilization, The mid-term and discharge rehabilitation assessment results showed that PNF has a better effect on shoulder pain. At the mid-term evaluation, the ROM of the PNF group was significantly better than that of the Control group in the three directions (p < 0.05).Conclusion: As an adjunctive therapy, PNF can improve the shoulder joint structure of patients with frozen shoulder and is an effective treatment strategy for frozen shoulder. To overcome a possible drop in performance following longer stretch durations (>60 s), post-stretching dynamic activities (PSA) can be applied. However, it is not clear if this is true for isolated proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching of different muscle groups (e.g., triceps surae and quadriceps). Thus, 16 participants performed both interventions (triceps surae PNF + PSA; quadriceps PNF + PSA) in random order, separated by 48 h. Jump performance was assessed with a force plate, and tissue stiffness was assessed with a MyotonPro device. While no changes were detected in the countermovement jump performance, the PNF + PSA interventions resulted in a decrease in drop jump performance which led to a large magnitude of change following the triceps surae PNF + PSA and a small-to-medium magnitude of change following the quadriceps PNF + PSA. Moreover, in the triceps surae PNF + PSA intervention, a decrease in Achilles tendon stiffness was seen, while in the quadriceps PNF + PSA intervention, a decrease in the overall quadriceps muscle stiffness was seen. According to our results, we recommend that especially triceps surae stretching is avoided during warm-up (also when PSA is included) when the goal is to optimise explosive or reactive muscle contractions.      [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Stroke is the foremost cause of death and disability worldwide. Improving upper extremity function and quality of life are two paramount therapeutic targets during rehabilitation. Aim of the study: To investigate the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with trunk-targeted proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) on impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions of subjects with subacute stroke. Methodology: Fifty-four subjects with subacute stroke were divided into three groups using block randomization. All three groups received rehabilitation sessions lasting 90 min in duration, four times per week, for 6 weeks. Group 1 (n = 18) received conventional physical therapy (CPT); group 2 (n = 18) received CPT, trunk-targeted PNF, and sham tDCS; and group 3 (n = 18) received CPT, trunk-targeted PNF, and bihemispheric motor cortex stimulation with tDCS. Changes in motor impairment, motor activity, and health-related quality of life assessments were outcome measures. Results: A two-way linear mixed model analysis revealed interaction effects (group × time) for all outcome measurements (Trunk Impairment Scale, Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Motor Recovery after stroke upper extremity subsection, Wolf Motor Function Test, 10-Meter Walk Test, and the Stroke-Specific Quality of Life scale; all p < 0.01 or lower). Overall, post–pre mean differences demonstrate more substantial improvement in the active tDCS group, followed by sham stimulation associated with the PNF group and the group that received CPT alone. Conclusion: Trunk-targeted PNF combined with bihemispheric tDCS along with CPT engender larger improvements in upper extremity and trunk impairment, upper limb function, gait speed, and quality of life in the subacute stroke population. Abstract Background CAPOS syndrome (cerebellar ataxia, areflexia, pescavus, optic atrophy, and sensorineural hearing loss) is a rare congenital autosomal dominant disorder. The resulting neurological sequelae of impairments are progressive in nature and may interfere with functional independence, performing activities of daily living (ADL’s), and subsequently, affecting the quality of life (QOL). Since it is an extremely rare disorder, there is a severe dearth in the literature about how specific physiotherapy interventions may affect their functional status. Therefore, our objective was to investigate the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and Frenkel’s coordination exercises on functional recovery in a patient with CAPOS syndrome. Case presentation We herein present a case of a 25-year-old Indian male with complaints of generalized body weakness, difficulty visualizing distant objects, nystagmus, progressive sensorineural deafness, and ataxia. He was rehabilitated with a structured/customized physiotherapy protocol consisting of PNF approach and coordination exercises for 4 weeks, 6 days/week, 60 min daily. An improvement in overall functional performance of patient as per post-intervention scores of manual muscle testing, trunk control measurement scale, functional independence measure (components of self-care, transfers, and locomotion), and decline in severity of ataxia on scale for assessment and rating of ataxia scale was observed. Conclusion PNF and Frenkel’s exercises resulted in an improvement in overall functional performance of the patient. Improvement was observed in post-test scores of Manual Muscle Testing (MMT), Trunk Control Measurement Scale (TCMS), and Functional Independence Measure (FIM) for the components of self-care, transfers, and locomotion. Additionally, results also showed a decline in severity of ataxia on post-test scores of scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia (SARA) scale (i.e., from severe to moderate).

Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) is generally used for the lower limbs in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). This study aimed to determine the effect of PNF and Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT) on functional abilities, muscle strength, and trunk control in children with CP. Thirty spastic CP children classified as either level I–II in the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) or level I–II in the Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) were included. The PNF (n = 15) and the NDT group (n = 15) had physiotherapy for six weeks. The ABILHAND-Kids scale, the Purdue Pegboard Test (PBPT), the Nine-Hole Peg Test (9-HPT), and the Jebson-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT) were employed. Pinch meters, Jamar handheld dynamometers, and digital muscular strength assessments were used. The PNF group increased shoulder flexion (p < 0.05), adduction (p < 0.05), elevation (p < 0.05), scapular abduction (p < 0.05), elbow extension (right) (p < 0.05), grip (p < 0.05), and pinch strengths (left p < 0.05, right p < 0.05). The PNF group had significantly lower 9-HPT (p < 0.05), JTHFT (card turning), JTHFT (simulated feeding), JTHFT (lifting light cans), and JTHFT (lifting weight cans) durations (p < 0.05), and significantly higher PBPT (right-left) PBPT (bimanual), PBPT (assembly). (p < 0.05), ABILHAND (p < 0.05), and TCMS total scores (p < 0.001). While JTHFT (simulated feeding-left), JTHFT (stacking checkers-left), JTHFT (lifting light cans-left), and JTHFT (lifting weight cans-right/left) (p < 0.05) durations decreased in the NDT group, PBPT (right) (p < 0.05) had an increase in duration. This study aims to investigate the effects of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) techniques on respiratory parameters, swallowing, functional capacity, fatigue, and quality of life in people with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS). Thirty-four PwMS were included and randomized into the PNF Group (mean age: 43.23±10.55/years) or Control Group (mean age:38.47±8.18/years). In the PNF group, head-neck, upper extremity, trunk, and breathing techniques were applied three days/eight weeks. The control group continued home-based breathing exercises. Forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV1/FVC, peak expiratory flow (PEF), forced expiratory flow 25–75 % (%FEF 25–75), peak cough flow (PCF), maximal inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory pressures (MEP) were and two minutes walking test (2MWT) were measured. Dysphagia in Multiple Sclerosis (DYMUS), Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life (MusiQoL) were questioned. After treatment, MIP, MEP,%FEV1/FVC pred, %PEF pred ,%FEF 25–75 pred , PCF, DYMUS, EAT-10, FSS, and MUSIQoL were improved in the PNF group while MIP, MEP, PCF, DYMUS, EAT-10, MUSIQoL, and 2 MWT were improved in the control group (p < 0.05 for all). In the between-group analysis of the mean differences, the%FEV1 pred was significantly different in favor of the PNF Group (p = 0.011), and MIP was significantly different in favor of the Control Group (p = 0.013). The PNF techniques can improve respiratory muscle strength, respiratory functions, cough efficiency, swallowing functions, and quality of life in mild to moderate PwMS.
