The sustainable use of natural resources is becoming an increasingly important issue today. Stone paper, produced as an alternative to cellulose-based paper from the forest, is rich in minerals and produced without cellulose and water. This study focuses on the behavior of screen-printing ink on two different papers, stone paper and coated sticker paper. Properties such as ink adhesion, rubbing resistance, optical printing ink density, ink consumption, and lightfastness were measured on these surfaces. Solvent- and UV-based inks were used, and printing was carried out on cellulose-based (coated sticker paper) and mineral-based (stone paper) paper layers using three different mesh counts (90, 120, and 140 tpc). The rubbing resistance and lightfastness of the papers were also measured. The present findings revealed that stone paper had the same printability properties as cellulose-based paper. The study concluded that using a 140 tpc mesh with both types of ink results in a high-lightfastness ink layer and lower ink consumption. UV-based inks exhibited high rub resistance across all mesh counts. Additionally, when printing with stone paper, there will be a reduction in ink consumption, thereby achieving cost savings. Based on the present findings, it was concluded that water- and oil-resistant stone paper can be considered an essential alternative in many fields, including the printing industry. Researchers have been investigating all the possible ways that they can be used effectively for other purposes. Since IAPS are capable of forming cellulose fibre nets, in this research, papers were made from three different types of IAPS (Japanese knotweed, giant goldenrod, and black locust). This research examined these IAPS papers and their effectiveness when used as printing substrates. In comparison to commercial office paper, the differences in basic, surface, optical, and microscopic properties were measured. As a widely used technology, inkjet printing was applied. We tested a commonly used sans-serif typeface (which has been established as being more legible than other typefaces in previous research) in three different type sizes (i.e., 8, 10, and 12 pt). According to the results, paper made from IAPS could offer some usable properties and acceptable legibility, especially when printing typefaces with specific attributes, such as moderate counter size, higher x-height, and minimal differences in the letter stroke width, are used. An appropriate typographic tonal density should be achieved in combination with an adequate letter size, e.g., 10 pt type size when a sans-serif typeface is used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study characterizes and compares the parameters of the quality reproduction of fine elements in flexography on coated and uncoated paper as well as on OPP film (oriented polypropylene). A monochrome test form was created and printed using cyan UV ink. The analysis of results confirms the importance of interaction between the printing substrate and ink; it also indicates identical line and text deformations on the print. Quality reproduction on coated paper is higher in relation to OPP film for all the research parameters. The ink penetrates significantly more and with more irregularity into the pores and throats of the uncoated paper, which results in less homogeneous elements, and in such way that it loses its original shape. In coated paper and OPP film, the ink spreads more on the substrate area which gives it a significantly more homogeneous shape. However, due to the surface spread of the ink, the biggest changes in the size of fine elements are noticeable in the OPP film. The scientific contribution of this paper is based on the comparison of print quality parameters of fine elements, which can contribute to the optimization of the production process and quality of the final graphical product. This study characterizes and compares the dot properties in flexography on coated and uncoated paper and on OPP film, with the use of conventional AM screening technology and photopolymer plate with flat top dots. A monochrome test form was created and printed with cyan ink on three different printing substrates. For the study of the dot deformation, microscopic images were taken from the prints and analyzed using ImageJ software. The primary area of the study are highlight tones since the reproduction of small dots is synonymous with high quality reproduction. All significant parameters of the dot deformation were evaluated, including the dot geometry, dot sharpness and uniformity of density. The image analysis showed that dot deformation is the result of spreading and penetration of the ink. The microscopic snapshots of the test areas on the prints show that ink penetrates significantly into the pores and holes of the uncoated paper, resulting in a non-homogeneous dot, thus losing its original shape. On coated paper and OPP film, the ink spreads more on the surface of the printing substrate and in such way gives a more homogeneous dot shape.

Accordingly, this research comprises the comparison of the most important quality parameters of graphic reproduction in accordance with the ISO 12647-6 standard for three types of printing substrates: uncoated and coated paper and OPP film. The main goal is to examine the effect of the printing process in combination with various printing substrates on the color characteristics on the print. After the printing of a color-test form, the characterization of prints was carried out. The obtained results serve as the guidelines and recommendations for an easier and simpler control of reproduction. It has been concluded that the existing standard provides only basic recommendations. Accordingly, the characterization of the process should be adjusted to the customers' expectations.

This paper investigates the colorimetric properties of reversible thermochromic offset printing ink on different paper substrates. Reversible thermochromic (TC) printing ink is printed by offset printing on four different printing substrates. Colorimetric measurements are performed by measuring diffuse reflection by determining uniform measurable physical size in the CIELAB colour space of the examined sample at temperatures ranging from 35°C to 75°C during heating and at the same temperatures up to 20°C. As the colour of the TC prints depends on the temperature, which results in colour hysteresis, it is noted that the colour hysteresis is affected by the printing substrate. The activation temperature given by the producer (63°C), is above the obtained temperatures, for print on filter paper 61,3°C, for print on synthetic paper 61,5°C, for print on bulky paper 60,9°C, with the highest deviation in the case of print on recycled paper (59,4°C). The results of total colour difference of samples measured between heating and cooling at the temperature well below the final chromic temperature and the CIEDE2000 total colour difference between the samples in the heated and cooled state as a function of temperature showed that the highest colour difference was obtained in TC print on the filter paper. As a result of availability of new technologies, functional printing as a segment has become one of the most interesting directions of research and development in graphic technology. Conductive inks are not a novelty and they already have broad possibilities in production of everyday products. There is still a big market for the broadening of their use, as well as a possibility of further enhancing their properties. This paper analyzes the influence of printing substrate, age of ink and the number of IR drying on the electrical resistance of the conductive inks. In the paper, subject of analysis was the change of electrical resistance in the line that was 9 cm long and 10 typographic points wide. The semi-automated screen-printing machine was used for printing. Three types of printing substrates were used; uncoated, coated and recycled paper. Two types of inks were used; newly opened ink and ink that was out of date for half year. After the printing, prints were dried using the IR dryer. Prints were dried once, and then additional three times. After the first and last drying, multimeter was used to measure electrical resistance of the lines. Analysis of the data shows that the older ink produces prints with higher electrical resistance. There are also notable differences in the electrical resistance based on the printing substrate. Abstract: Introduction of an enzyme and a colour-forming reagent into paper enables the development of an authenticity indicator. The purpose of this work was to study the performance of Trametes versicolor laccase, TvL, and ABTS, 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt, in various printing substrates when printed with inkjet. The printing substrates included pre-coated mechanical paper additionally coated with PVA, silica and latex. The focus was on the bioanalytical performance and ink penetration. The setting of the printed TvL and ABTS ink was studied visually, with optical and confocal microscopy and with a so-called tape laminating technique. Technical properties of the printing substrates and effect of the surface chemistry were discussed and related to the bioanalytical properties. TvL activity persisted well during the printing. The best colour response was attained using the PVA-coated base paper. The film-forming ability of the PVA was found to be the main contributor to the colour reaction. The uniform, dense and non-porous PVA layer retains the ABTS and TVL molecules on top of the printing substrate. The high local ink concentration on the PVA coating layer combined with the absorptive paper substrate suggests that the PVA film acts as a filtering layer which retains TvL and ABTS molecules in the coating layer but allows most of the ink solvents to penetrate into the paper structure. TvL and ABTS molecules are also trapped in the PVA polymer network due to swelling effect of water. Electrostatic attractions between the PVA and ABTS and TvL molecules do not contribute to the colour reaction. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
