Research pertaining to the emergence and presence of trans and gender nonconforming identities in press materials has been lacking, particularly within the queer Irish context. This article fills this gap by presenting the findings of a study exploring the emergence of gender nonconformity through the alternative queer media outlet, Gay Community News (GCN). Using the first decade of the GCN’s reportage (1988 to 1998), this article explores 113 issues of GCN, including supplements, deploying textual analysis to uncover how GCN negotiated and represented trans and gender diverse identities. Through this analysis, three key themes relating to trans visibility emerge across this decade: 1. Negotiating the inclusion and exclusion of trans femme identities; 2. Transvestite identity and its normal attachments and 3. Information provision and consciousness-raising. In exploring these themes, this article argues that alternative media have been crucial for the emergence of trans and gender diverse visibility in the Irish queer press. Additionally, it contends that this community is very much minoritised regarding the kinds of inclusions offered to them. While highlighting the activist potential of alternative media like GCN, the article demonstrates that trans visibility was often complex, marred by exclusions and expectations around conformity. Neoliberalism has been described as the most successful ideology in world history (Anders-son 2000). This has, in turn, impacted the modern media by dumbing down its public interest role, through cultivating concentrated media ownership patterns, which has produced hyper-commercial and elitist-driven content. This paper has the broad aim of provoking discussions and debates both for the Global South and Global North geospatial locations grappling with these neoliberal consequences, by considering what systemic alternative(s) to capitalist me-dia can be considered. It specifically explores the return of the anti-capitalist alternative media to South Africa’s print media terrain to function in a developmental role. With the aim to dilute the neoliberal capitalist nature of its media that has effectively perpetuated the dominance of the elite class at the expense of citizen-oriented and public interest imperatives (Govenden 2022). It furthers this argument by also comparatively drawing on two BRICS country case studies from Asia i.e. China and India.

The aim of the paper is to investigate the presence of agribusiness topics in the daily press in Serbia. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of headlines in ten daily newspapers in the period from 1 November 2021 to 31 October 2022 was conducted. The results were analysed globally (as total number of headlines) and according to the following criteria: month of publishing, daily newspaper, and tonality of the headlines. During the study period, 352 titles were published on agribusiness. The results show that this important topic is insufficiently present in the daily press and that a negative tone prevails in the coverage of agriculture and food. Part of these findings can be attributed to current political events during the study period. However, more objectivity, more responsible media policies and neutrality in reporting are needed to ensure that readers are adequately informed about the importance and perspectives of agribusiness.

Pakistani is a diverse society, and media are vital in highlighting their identity, presence, and contributions. Newspapers play a pivotal role in shaping perceptions of ethnic minorities, highlighting the need for impartial and responsible journalism. This study examines the role of newspapers in this context, focusing on the portrayal of ethnic minorities through a content analysis of 84 news articles from leading Pakistani Urdu‐language newspapers (Daily Jang, Daily Express and Daily Khabrain) to scrutinise the portrayal of ethnic minorities. The study aims to uncover the patterns and themes in the portrayal of these communities. Findings reveal that patterns in coverage allocation, with Christians dominating news coverage compared to other religious groups. The portrayal of non‐Muslim groups is predominantly positive, yet the articles featured anti‐Ahmadi content, reflecting complexity. The findings emphasise the well‐being of minorities, showcasing a positive trend. The news articles accentuated the positive contributions of non‐Muslims, and a significant majority (85.7%) covered religious events of minority groups. Positive representation aligns with societal discourse acknowledging diverse contributions and cultural expressions. Islamophobia has historically been used to refer to racism, prejudice, and securitization, indicating that these are structural, cognitive, or cultural aspects of the issue. The term now refers to an Islamophobic social structure in the West, where people tend to act in a way that is hostile against Islam and everything that it represents, according to the current study. The prefix neo has thus been introduced by the researchers to this phrase to account for the psychological aspect of Islamophobia, which shows itself in behaviors and discourses. In order to comprehend the nature of Islamophobia in the UK and the USA, this research aims to investigate Islamophobic discourses in the media of these two Western cultures. Using the DHA analytical methodology, it examines 446 top stories from The Washington Post (The Post editorial board has supported Democratic candidates for federal, state, and municipal offices in the great majority of U.S. elections. Decisions on endorsements and the editorial board of the newspaper are made independently of journalistic activities. It wasn't until 1976 that the Post consistently endorsed candidates for president. The Post has never backed a Republican for president in the general election since it endorsed Jimmy Carter in 1976. Instead, it has consistently supported Democrats in presidential contests. Despite this, the Post declined to either Republican nominee Vice President George H. W. Bush or Democratic candidate Governor Michael Dukakis in the 1988 presidential contest. Obama in 2008 and 2012, Clinton in 2016, and Biden in 2020 were all backed by the Post editorial board (The Washington Post, 2020).) and The Independent (The Independent is typically characterized as liberal, liberal-left, and center to center. The paper's founders believed that readers from The Times and The Daily Telegraph would be its primary audience when it was first founded in 1986 and aimed for its political stance to match the middle of the British political spectrum. It is more of a rival to The Guardian because of perceptions that it leans left on the political spectrum. On economic matters, The Independent, however, leans liberal and pro-market. The Independent described itself as a proudly liberal publication on Sunday (Luce, 2019).) between November 2016 and December 2017. This study finds that although Neo-Islamophobia is more prevalent in the US, where it is considered as a challenge to the socio-political order, classic Islamophobia is more prevalent in the UK, where Islam is seen as a threat to Europe's symbolic identity. This article discusses a little-known Tibetan bound-book format, using examples from a unique collection of manuscripts, named Drangsong, belonging to the Bon religion of Tibet. Despite the fact that Tibetan sewn books are rare compared to other formats, they are common in Mustang. This study of sixteen sewn Drangsong manuscripts explores the technical details of their binding, the interdependence of the format and function of these manuscripts, as well as their manufacturing materials in the context of the provenance of these books and the social history of the region. A comparison will then be made between the books’ individual vs. collective features.

ABSTRACT This article discusses da'wah through print media (Bi Al-Kitabah). This paper aims to determine the effectiveness of spreading da'wah through print media, namely newspapers. In Islamic boarding schools, newspapers become an alternative medium for students to channel their thoughts and share knowledge. Being in the Pesantren environment does not close the boundaries for students in developing their insights. The development of technology today requires the younger generation to become an innovative and highly intellectual generation. Print media must now follow the flow of the times to maintain the existence of the media, one of which is by maintaining the actuality of writing. In the Nurul Jadid Paiton Islamic boarding school in Probolinggo – especially in the Qur'an Education Center of Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School, print media is the main media that is efficient and effective in disseminating information and knowledge for readers. In this descriptive qualitative research, researchers use data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and documentation from both offline and online sources. Based on the analysis of the collected data, it can be concluded that the use of print media in the form of newspapers in Islamic boarding schools can have a good impact on the development of knowledge, productivity of written works, and the effectiveness of spreading da'wah. Berada di lingkungan Pesantren tidak menutup batasan bagi mahasiswa dalam mengembangkan wawasannya. Perkembangan teknologi saat ini menuntut generasi muda untuk menjadi generasi yang inovatif dan intelektual tinggi. Media cetak kini harus mengikuti arus zaman untuk mempertahankan eksistensi media tersebut, salah satunya dengan menjaga aktualitas tulisan. Di pondok pesantren Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo – khususnya di Pusat Pendidikan Al-Qur'an Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid, media cetak merupakan media utama yang efisien dan efektif dalam menyebarluaskan informasi dan pengetahuan bagi pembaca. Dalam penelitian kualitatif deskriptif ini, peneliti menggunakan teknik pengumpulan data melalui wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi baik dari sumber offline maupun online. Berdasarkan analisis data yang terkumpul, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan media cetak berupa surat kabar di pondok pesantren dapat berdampak baik bagi pengembangan pengetahuan, produktivitas karya tulis, dan efektivitas penyebaran dakwah. Issues related to maternal mental health, such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis both during and after pregnancy, have attracted international attention. The World Health Organization has documented a notable occurrence, particularly in developing nations. The function of print media in raising awareness about these concerns is vital. This study investigates the extent to which Jaipur's daily newspapers in 2022 address the topic of maternal mental health. The objective is to evaluate how often this issue is covered and the influence it has on women's knowledge and understanding. A descriptive survey study methodology was employed to collect data from 250 women. The data collection process involved purposive sampling and the use of questionnaires. An examination of the content of Rajasthan Patrika and Dainik Bhaskar in July 2022 found that there was no reporting or discussion on maternal mental health. According to surveys, 35% of the participants reported experiencing mental difficulties when they were pregnant, although a majority of 84% did not actively seek medical assistance. Many respondents (90%) expressed the opinion that newspapers should publish articles on this subject. The study finds that there is a notable disparity in media coverage of maternal mental health in Jaipur, indicating a requirement for heightened awareness and focused health communication initiatives. Aims: Because media portrayal reflects and shapes public opinion and health policy, investigating news coverage of public health issues is highly relevant for public health research and practice. Addressing a topical issue, this study investigated how newspaper coverage framed COVID-19 vaccines in Austria and German-speaking Switzerland and how it developed over time. Methods: A quantitative newspaper content analysis of six newspapers from Austria and German-speaking Switzerland published between January 1 and 31, 2022 was conducted. Frames were identified for each country separately through hierarchical cluster analysis (Ward's method) based on frame elements. Results: Four frames were identified in both countries: (1) Evaluating new vaccines, (2) Discussing mandates, (3) Promoting vaccination, (4) Mentioning vaccines. In Frames 1 (Switzerland 86.4%, Austria 93.3%) and 3 (Switzerland 92.7%, Austria 98.9%), most articles included vaccine-endorsing statements, with Swiss coverage including additional negative statements more often than Austrian coverage (43.2%/44.6% vs 4.0%/3.3%). Frame 2 was closely linked to vaccine skepticism only in Austria and contained more evaluative statements in Austrian newspapers (25.4% endorsing, 35.4% rejecting; in Switzerland 14.5%/18.1%). The Austrian tabloid Kronen Zeitung published most articles (497/1091, 45.6%). Conclusions: The commercialized and comparatively high share of tabloid news coverage in Austria may have contributed to oversimplified and polarizing COVID-19 vaccine debates in this context. Insufficiently balanced and adequate information may contribute to a loss of public trust in vaccination and may therefore affect vaccination uptake. Стаття присвячена аналізу особливостей виникнення миттєвих контактних температур при тонкому ельборовому шліфуванні нових антифрикційних самозмащувальних композитів, синтезованих на основі регенерованих шліфувальних відходів високолегованих сталей з домішками твердого мастила фториду кальцію — Р6АМ5+(4‒8)%CaF2 та 8Х4В2МФС2+(4‒8)%CaF2. Показано, що фінішна обробка розроблених високолегованих композитів шліфувальними кругами з ельбору BN на еластичній Бр1 бакелітно-гумовій зв’язці за технологічних режимів: швидкість руху кругу 22 м/с і глибина різання в діапазоні 0,03–0,005 мм викликає появу найнижчих температурних величин (113‒300° С) в поверхневих локальних областях деталі. Це обумовлює формування найменших спотворень структури і фізичних властивостей поверхневого шару деталі, з якого відбувається зрізання надтонких мікростружок. Виявлено, що величини температур на оброблюваних поверхнях значно нижчі із застосуванням ельборових кругів на еластичній Бр1 зв’язці, ніж на керамічній К1 зв’язці. Це пояснюється тим, що бакелітно-гумова зв’язка більш еластична, ніж керамічна. Тому при застосуванні ельборових кругів на бакелітно-гумовій зв’язці Бр1 сили різання, які утворюються при зрізанні шліфувальним кругом тонких мікростружок, забезпечують меншу глибину проникнення інструменту у поверхню обробки композиту. Через це змінюються умови різання — суттєво зменшується переріз мікростружки, що призводить до зниження контактних температур та сприяє перерозподілу напружень у поверхневому шарі, при цьому поліпшуються умови формування геометрії поверхні з мінімальними величинами параметру шорсткості Ra. Дослідження впливу зернистості ельборового кругу на виникнення миттєвих контактних температур у зоні різання показали, що застосування дрібнозернистого ріжучого інструменту істотно, майже у 1,5–1,6 рази, знижує величини контактних температур у зоні різання. Дослідження показали, що у випадку обробки композитів з використанням кругів з ельбору підвищеної міцності ЛП спостерігається поява вищих температур у зоні різання на противагу використанню кругів звичайної міцності ЛО. Це пояснюється тим, що ельборові круги з більш міцними зернами поступово викришуються і частково руйнуються під дією сил різання через схильність ельбору ЛП до крихкості. Такі явища викликають збільшення миттєвих контактних температур через участь сколотих фрагментів ельборових зерен у процесі різання. Для мінімізації температурного впливу на структуру і властивості робочих поверхонь композитних деталей доцільно виконувати фінішне шліфування кругами з ельбору звичайної міцності ЛО на еластичній зв’язці Бр1, зернистістю від 14 до 20 мкм, за 100 % концентрації ельбору, що є передумовою забезпечення високих параметрів якості поверхонь. Результати досліджень показали, що мінімізація температури в зоні оброблення, яка не спричиняє зміни структури і зниження вихідних властивостей робочих поверхонь деталей, може бути забезпечена дотриманням наступних технологічних параметрів фінішного ельборового шліфування: швидкість руху кругу Vкр — 22,0 м/с, швидкість обертання композитної деталі Vв — 2,0 м/хв, глибина різання t = 2,0‒5,0 мкм, з безперервним охолодженням 3 % водяним розчином емульсії соди з мінеральним мастилом, які можуть бути рекомендовані для тонкої фінішної обробки деталей друкарського обладнання.

Об’єктом дослідження є процеси формування геометрії профілю та мікрорельєфного зміцнення, що впливають на зносостійкість пластин для фальцювання інтегральних обкладинок. Аналітичні та експериментальні дослідження базуються на розробці імітаційної моделі процесу зношування фальцювальних пластин. Основне припущення полягає в тому, що мікрорельєфне зміцнення підвищить зносостійкість фальцювальних пластин, покращуючи якість і довговічність процесу фальцювання. Дослідження показало значні відмінності в зносостійкості фальцювальних пластин з різними геометріями профілю. Профілі, утворені за допомогою евольвентної кривої, забезпечують більш рівномірний розподіл напружень, що зменшує концентрацію напружень та підвищує довговічність пластин. З іншого боку, профілі з осьовим вигином на 90⁰ мають вищу концентрацію напружень, що призводить до швидшого зношування та утворення мікротріщин. Запропонована методика оцінки мікроструктурних змін дозволяє визначити оптимальні геометричні параметри профілю, які підвищують зносостійкість фальцювальних пластин. Зокрема, рівномірний тензор напружень у евольвентних профілях сприяє кращій розподільній здатності механічних навантажень, що знижує ризик локальних перегрівів і покращує загальну якість фальцювання. Такі профілі є більш придатними для використання у високоточних і складних фальцювальних завданнях, забезпечуючи довготривалу і надійну експлуатацію.

Стаття присвячена розробленню математичної моделі, яка описує процес передачі та руху фарби від фарбоживильного пристрою до накочувальних валиків, передачу розчину від зволожувального апарата до форми, взаємодію фарби і розчину в зонах контакту валиків з друкарською формою, накочування фарби на друкувальні елементи та розчину на пробільні, та їх передачу поверхнею офсетного циліндра до відбитків та у зворотному напрямі. На основі математичної моделі з використанням програмного пакета Matlab Simulink побудовано симулятор, який відтворює процеси, що відбуваються у фарбодрукарській системі, і враховує режими роботи усіх її компонентів. Шляхом імітаційного моделювання виявлено зворотний рух емульгованої фарби до дукторного циліндра та її передачу на поверхню валиків зволожувального апарата. Підтверджено потребу у збільшенні кількості зволожувального розчину із зростанням площі заповнення форми друкувальними елементами. Встановлено, що із зменшенням площі заповнення форми товщина фарби на поверхнях валиків зволожувального апарата зростає, що зменшує товщину шару розчину, який подається у фарбодрукарську систему.

Схарактеризовано інструментально ефективні технічні засоби, які використовують для створення візуальних елементів. Зазначено, що візуалізація дає змогу систематизувати інформацію, перетворити складні для розуміння дані на більш прості й привабливі та завдяки цьому істотно покращує сприйняття інформації авдиторією, адже і зменшує її когнітивне перевантаження. За цих умов актуалізується потреба в ефективних інструментах для створення якісного візуального контенту, з-поміж яких важливо обрати саме той, який матиме всі необхідні для виконання тих чи інших завдань функції. На основі аналізу сервісів Inkscape, Canva, Piktochart, Venngage та Visme, призначених для візуалізації інформаційного контенту, зроблено висновок, що вони схожі між собою як за функціями, так і за пропонованими користувачам можливостями. Їхня популярність зумовлена передусім чималим добором шаблонів та інструментів для створення живописної змістовної інфографіки, які можна відредагувати на свій смак і побудувати на їх основі щось цілком оригінальне. Якщо є потреба працювати в команді та ділитися своєю роботою з іншими її членами, то можна скористатися будь-яким аналізованим тут сервісом, окрім Inkscape, адже в ньому немає функціоналу для співпраці над проєктом у реальному часі. Проте тільки Inkscape є повністю безкоштовною програмою, решта застосунків мають платні тарифи та безкоштовний план з обмеженими можливостями, у якому не можна скористатися шаблонами й елементами з позначкою «Pro», а деякі ілюстрації позначені водяними знаками. Хоча платні програми й забезпечують значно ширший функціонал для роботи, та, щоб оцінити їх зручність і можливості, варто все-таки розпочати з безкоштовної версії, функціоналу, якої зазвичай буває достатньо для виконання повсякденних завдань.

Проаналізовано актуальні дослідження в галузі електрофлокування, які торкаються різних сфер використання. Досліджено ринок флокованої пакувальної продукції і виділено її актуальні типи і види. Виявлено чинники впливу на максимальну щільність волокон в процесі електрофлокування (кінетична енергія поступального руху волокон, їх орієнтація, в’язкість клею, час флокування). Описано залежності щільності флокованого покриття від часу флокування та орієнтації флоку. На підставі аналізу результатів виявлено особливості поведінки волокон в процесі електрофлокування, доцільність додаткового контактного зарядження флоку та наявність високої концентрації орієнтованих волокон.

У статті досліджено способи використання ChatGPT як асистента у творчому письмі. Штучний інтелект (ШІ) може допомогти письменникові знайти ідеї та альтернативні напрями розвитку сюжетів, розгортати різні сценарії, стилізувати тексти, створювати описи й діалоги, отримати зворотний зв’язок для попереднього оцінювання тексту. Чат-бот дозволяє скорочувати або розширювати текст, добирати влучні метафори, порівняння, синоніми, продовжувати речення тощо. Досліджено можливості та виклики у використанні чат-бота для вирішення письменницьких завдань, виокремлено різні підходи взаємодії людини та ШІ, порушено питання щодо авторства тексту, згенерованого за допомогою ШІ, акцентовано на обмеженнях мовної моделі: брак прозорості й генерування неправдивої інформації, нерозуміння семантики тексту, психологічних особливостей і комунікаційних практик, плутанина в поняттях, створення невідповідних зв’язків. Методика дослідження охоплює загальнонаукові методи та метод експерименту. Під час взаємодії із чат-ботом згенеровано три концепції видань: дитячого пізнавального видання про вивчення порід собак з допомогою магічного часового порталу, фантастичного роману на тему колонізації Марса та історичного роману про часи правління князя Володимира Великого. Виявлено генеративні можливості ChatGPT за шістьома функціями: формування ідей, розроблення сюжету, персонажів, створення описів, діалогів і художніх засобів. З’ясовано способи використання ChatGPT для генерації цілісної концепції твору в межах одного чата та його здатність виконувати завдання різної складності: від розроблення ідеї до стилістичного поліпшення уривка тексту. Наголошено на важливості виваженого підходу до використання мовної моделі та врахуванні особливостей функціонування системи під час виконання письменницьких завдань. Запропоновано методи використання ChatGPT авторами та редакторами, окреслено межі застосування технології у створенні проєктів з креативним складником, зазначено про можливість використання ШІ як допоміжного інструменту, що може надихнути людину на створення оригінального видавничого продукту та розкрити творчий потенціал особистості. Підкреслено, що ШІ теж навчається під час взаємодії з людиною.

У статті розглянуто юридичні та виробничі проблеми, можливості та перспективи застосування ШІ-систем у книжковому дизайні. У серпні–грудні 2023 р. проведено якісні та кількісні дослідження американського та українського книжкових ринків (моніторинг за ключовими словами на Amazon.com, нестандартизовані експертні інтерв’ю, дискурс-аналіз інтернет-ресурсів). Згідно із зібраними на сайті Amazon.com даними, у підготовці 261 видання, де для ілюстрування використано ШІ, найчастіше застосовано Midjourney AI, DALL-E 2 та DALL-E. Наразі ШІ-системи (Midjourney, DALL-E, Leonardo A.I., Adobe Firefly та ін.) не здатні створювати бездоганний та унікальний дизайн «під ключ». Серед виробничих проблем: функціональна обмеженість ШІ-систем, фактична недостовірність, брак індивідуального стилю, емоційної виразності в згенерованих зображеннях, несталість образів (проблема «катастрофічного забування») та ін. Крім того, ШІ-системи схильні до плагіату. Виявлено основні юридичні ризики застосування ШІ: навчання ШІ на чужому контенті без дозволів, використання неперевірених стокових фото, невизначена ситуація з авторством тощо, що призводить до звинувачень у плагіаті та репутаційних втрат. Однак мультимодальні ШІ-системи невпинно вдосконалюються, пропонуючи дизайнерам усе більші інструментальні можливості. Використання ШІ-систем у книжковому дизайні дає змогу: аналізувати тренди, знаходити ідеї та образи, які резонують з аудиторією; масштабувати робочі навантаження; заощаджувати час та кошти. Зроблено висновок про переважання можливостей над ризиками технології, тому колаборація дизайнерів та ШІ-систем ставатиме все тіснішою задля досягнення найкращих результатів. З огляду на відворотність подальшої інтеграції ШІ в редакційні процеси, артикульовано потребу масштабної фахової перепідготовки книжкових дизайнерів.

The modern world is undergoing rapid changes in various fields of activity, and development of board game design is no exception. One of the most exciting and promising directions in this field has become the use of neural networks for image generation, which has already received its own name — Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI). This opens up new horizons for board game designers, allowing them to quickly and with minimal expenditure of money to create attractive design elements. GAI stands out as a tool capable of generating images based on text queries. The paper examines the decision-making process, that the designer and GAI specialist make during development of illustrations for a board game. In this process, the designer formulates a request and a technical task, based on which the GAI specialist creates a number of images, from which, under designer guidance, the most acceptable in terms of content, style and other special conditions of the image are selected, remaining for further refinement. After finishing with the help of a neural network the most acceptable images, the illustrations are refined by the designer himself to bring these images to look necessary for the task, but with those aspects, that the neural network is not able to solve due to technical limitations. So, thanks to the neural network, it is possible to quickly obtain unique images for a technical task; the chain of specialists needed to work on this task is reduced, thereby reducing financial and time costs for product production.

Науково-технічна бібліотека КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського має понад сторічну історію і зберігає в своїх фондах унікальні зразки науково-технічної літератури XVIII–початку ХХ ст. Дослідження рідкісних і цінних видань фахівцями бібліотеки триває постійно і стосуються окремих видань і цілих колекцій, а результати публікуються у фахових історичних і бібліотечних виданнях. Поступово формується каталог книжкових знаків, що збереглися на сторінках видань. Але до сьогодні дослідження не торкались книжкових оправ. Запропонована стаття є першою спробою показати найцінніші зразки вітчизняного і світового поліграфічного мистецтва, на прикладі яких можна прослідкувати розвиток палітурної справи протягом попередніх двох століть. В статті представлені численні зразки книжкових оправ, виготовлених з природніх матеріалів, різні варіанти оздоблення обох частин палітурки і корінців, деякі провенієнції, що збереглися на форзацах видань і корінцях. Опис палітурок подається за видами використаних матеріалів — пергамент, шкіра, папір, коленкор та їх поєднання. Окремі видання є унікальними пам’ятками мистецтва і дають уяву про рівень поліграфічного виробництва ХІХ–початку ХХ ст. в європейських країнах, переважно Німеччини, Франції, Великої Британії тощо. Також, предметом дослідження стали власницькі знаки палітурних закладів Києва початку ХХ ст., які зустрічаємо на сторінках багатьох книжкових видань. В результаті складено список київських майстерень, що мали ділові відношення з Київським політехнічним інститутом. За кількістю печаток палітурників, виявлено хто отримував найбільші замовлення від навчального закладу. Оскільки переважна більшість літератури з-за кордону надходила без палітурки, об’єм співпраці був досить великим. Запропонована робота має на меті дати уявлення потенціальним дослідникам історії книги і поліграфічної справи.

This article examines changes in Polish local press at the turn of the second and the third decade of the 21st Century, directly or indirectly related to the coronavirus pandemic. For years, statistics have been showing declining sales of printed press. This is mainly the case of the general-interest newspapers – national, regional, and local alike. Internet media platforms are increasingly important and often take over the role of the leading local media. Due to their limited reach, local publishers felt the losses from reduced advertising revenue and copy sales even more acutely than national publishers. Local press and small publishing teams struggled to cope with the impact of the pandemic and demand for digitization. So, what will the local press look like in the following years? How will the pandemic change the face of the local press? This study addresses these issues based on findings from desk research, case studies, and content analysis of relevant media. The result of the research is the confirmation of changes in the field of local communication, especially in its channels. The printed press arouses less and less interest among recipients and ceases to function as the fourth estate.

The article investigates the transformation of Bulgaria’s print media culture in the 1990s, a period of profound political, economic, social, and cultural change in Eastern Europe. The paper’s contribution is two-fold. Firstly, it focuses on the convergence of selected Bulgarian newspapers with established and emerging media formats alongside Bulgaria’s position between the East and the West. Secondly, the representations of and discourses about technology during the transition period are analysed and their link with identity formation is explored. I compare two tabloids (Trud and 24 Chassa) with two business-focused broadsheets (Cash and Capital) issued in 1997. Adopting a non-Western perspective by focusing on a case of transitional Eastern Europe, the article offers a snapshot and a reflection on the cultural representations of technologies, discursive identity construction, and media practices of the 1990s. The emergence of the free market and the influx of electronics in Bulgaria affected identity formation as technologies related to notions of modernity, Europeanness, globalisation, entertainment, power, gender, and social status.

Acquiring current sociological information on the features of representing the image of the future in print media is a task that has been highlighted in the context of the integration and consolidation of Russian society in a hybrid reality. Drawing upon theories of the information society and communicative action, the authors examine the information and communicative sphere as determinants in constructing trends in social and political processes, with the media serving as a crucial institution for shaping public opinion. Methods and Empirical Basis: The empirical study was conducted using quantitative and qualitative content analysis and critical discourse analysis of publications in three leading print media outlets during the years 2013-2014 and 20222023. The total sample consisted of 521 articles, with a selected sample of 174 articles published in periodicals such as “Moskovsky Komsomolets”, “Rossiyskaya Gazeta”, “Komsomolskaya Pravda,” and “Novaya Gazeta”. Results and Discussion: It was found that the construction of the image of future Russia is based on two groups of factors – internal (social policy, human capital, traditions, economic development, environmental preservation) and external (Russia’s confrontation, multipolar world). The emotional tone of articles from 2013 to 2023 has acquired more negative connotation; the number of articles containing long-term forecasts has decreased due to the implementation of Special Military Operations (SMO). Dominant discourses that construct the image of future Russia and are most actively propagated in the media were described: the “Russia - Eurasian Colossus” discourse, the breakthrough and overcoming discourse, the “besieged fortress” discourse, the discourse of justice, and the discourse of cancellation. In the future, the Russian Federation is presented as a Eurasian integrator based on cultural traditions, historical heritage, and ideological imperatives of a highly consolidated society. It is portrayed as a future leader in technological development, an economy based on import substitution and breakthrough production capacities, the advancement of science and innovation, effective educational and youth policies. Positive representations of the future create images of Russia as a saviour, a leader of a just world order, which is reflected in articles dedicated to the new multipolar world order. The “besieged fortress” and the discourse of cancellation construct both negative images of the country, incapable of responding to contemporary challenges and overcoming socio-economic development risks, as well as positive images where society and authority establish effective strategies to resist threats and external circumstances.

В роботі наведено результати дослідження сучасного стану технології зі створення кросмедійної рекламної продукції та чинників, що впливають на впізнаваність бренду. Виконано патентний пошук за чотирма тематичними напрямами та визначено тенденції розвитку кросмедійних технологій у галузі креативної реклами. Проаналізовано наповнення та цільову аудиторію кросмедійної рекламної продукції. На основі проведеного аналізу та патентного пошуку визначено тенденції розвитку технологій, програмного і апаратного забезпечення та дизайну кросмедійних рекламних продуктів. За результатами аналізу можна сказати, що кросмедійна рекламна продукція активно розвивається і впізнаваність бренду для цієї продукції є актуальною та перспективною тематикою. Патентний аналіз за останні десять років виявив сталий розвиток сучасних технологій, методів та апаратно-програмних засобів для створення кросмедійної рекламної продукції. У динаміці патентування стрімке зростання відзначено у 2018 р., що підтверджується великою кількістю виданих патентів в США, Японії, Польщі, Україні та Німеччині. Найбільш поширеними напрямами патентування є створення кросмедійної продукції, креативної реклами, загалом рекламної продукції та програних продуктів для розробки рекламної продукції. В роботі представлено авторську класифікацію рекламної продукції за методами розміщеннями і каналами розповсюдження, а також кросмедійних рекламних продуктів за цільовою аудиторією, циклічністю, часом сприйняття інформації та каналами розповсюдження. Проаналізовано процес створення дизайну для кросмедійної рекламної продукції та розроблено причинно-наслідкову діаграму, що систематизує та виокремлює фактори, які впливають на ефективність кросмедійної рекламної продукції. Серед факторів відібрано основні, що впливають на ефективність впізнаваності продукції та при створенні продукту.

The article analyzes the influence of foreign information, especially French, in the press of Santa Cruz de Tenerife between 1874 and 1914. It highlights that some newspapers had their own networks of collaborators and circulation of international information. These newspapers not only reported on the political, cultural, or scientific life of France, but also contributed to the formation of public opinion in the provincial capital of the Canary Islands. The importance of the Tenerife press in those years is mentioned, and keywords such as written press, networks, foreign correspondents, republicanism, and France are used. The Czech quality (non-tabloid) nationwide daily newspapers never published fewer sports pages during the two first decades of twenty-first century than they did during the COVID-19 pandemic. A reduction in the number of pages devoted to sports and other topics was a logical reaction to the paralysis of professional sports and many other domains of human life. But a comparison of data from the first wave of the pandemic, from March to May of 2020 with the same period in the following years proves that the trend to downsize sports sections continued in many cases. This study applied quantitative content analysis to the Monday editions of the Czech daily newspapers Hospodárské noviny, Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta Dnes, and Právo. It confirmed that the position of sport in the daily newspapers has weakened in the long term, and the pandemic accelerated the tendency, especially in the case of more specialised daily newspapers. This study aimed to examine whether there are differences in reading performance between digital and print media by measuring reading speed of paragraphs on print materials and tablet PC. To investigate whether the physical characteristics of the media influence reading performance, the format of text was kept as similar as possible between print and digital media. We also compared conditions in which paragraphs consisted of either long or short sentences to explore if there were differential effects on reading performance based on sentence length across different media. Additionally, reading speed was analyzed based on reading span to investigate whether there were differences in reading performance according to participants' working memory capacity. As a result, reading speed was faster when reading print media compared to digital media. However, there was no difference in reading speed based on the length of sentences composing the paragraphs. Participants with a higher reading span exhibited faster reading speed compared to participants with a lower reading span. Moreover, participants with a higher reading span read paragraphs composed of long sentences faster on print media than on digital media. The findings of this study suggest that visual fatigue induced by tablet PCs and participants' working memory capacity may impact reading speed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The media is an important source of information due to its informative function, but it is also important to convey the news in an accurate and objective manner as well as to deliver the news quickly and understandably. Media platforms can present social events to the masses differently in line with their own ideologies. From this point of view, it is important to look at the way media platforms present news from various sources representing different ideologies in order to see the events from a wide perspective The aim of this study is to obtain findings on the ways in which disaster news is presented in the media and to determine what kind of discourse the media develops on issues that concern the whole country. In this study, the discourse analysis method, which serves to ideologically analyze how language is used in social contexts, written or oral texts and the social and cultural contexts in which these texts are produced and interpreted, was used. In this study, the earthquake news in Yeni Şafak, Yeni Çağ and Evrensel newspapers after the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake were discussed and it was revealed that there were differences in the discourses they used in their news in line with the different political ideologies they had in the newspapers examined. This paper analyses how Pakistani print news media framed two armed conflict that occurred between India and Pakistan post-Pulwama attack in 2019 using five framing categories; conflict, morality, responsibility human interest, and solution. Using census approach subset of data; 282 opinions and editorials were collected from a population of 1,321 published number of items. Results from content analysis showed that media published a significant amount of content in editorials and opinions regarding armed conflicts. Content analysis disclosed that Pakistani print media placed emphasis on the use of conflict frame, and the use of human-interest frame was seen slightly low in numbers across all the newspapers during framing of Balakot airstrike and Pakistani retaliation after the Pulwama attack. However, there was no significant difference found between framing categories used by print news media. Findings are discussed in the context of journalistic priorities in selecting specific frames during framing of armed conflicts that holds national and international prominence. The fortune of the print media world over has been declining in the last decade for several reasons. Presumably, chief among these reasons is the emergence and popularity of digital media. The Nigerian press is not in any way insulated from the problem facing the print media worldwide. This paper examines the Nigerian press current state of affairs. Employing primarily qualitative research method, both primary and secondary data were interrogated to determine the influence of digital news media on the circulation of printed newspapers in Nigeria and proffer solutions to the problem. The two theories considered relevant to this study are the Creative Destruction and the Destructive Innovation. Based on the data available for the study, it is sufficiently clear that the Nigerian press has been consistently in decline even before the emergence of the new media technology. The new media has, therefore, complicated matters for the newspaper industry. Comprehensive efforts should thus be geared toward arresting the declining trend. The government and the media operators have roles to play in this matter. The government needs to formulate a deliberate policy that would resuscitate the moribund newsprint and other newspaper auxiliary industries. За останній час інтенсивно створюються нові аналітичні алгоритми для систем цифрової обробки графічних зображень — від схем, креслень, текстів, документації, рекламної продукції. Одним з важливих напрямів є створення теоретичної алгоритмічної бази для покращення якості оптичних зображень графічної інформації, що міститься на полімерних носіях. Актуальність цього обумовлена тим, що такі зображення містять декілька складових. Перша — інформаційна (у нашому випадку крупномасштабна модельна структура, яка сформована впорядкованими за напрямами двопроменезаломлюючими циліндрами — аналог графічної інформації). Друга — фонова (у нашому випадку дрібномасштабна модельна структура, яка сформована шаром двопроменезаломлюючих сферичних кульок — аналог розсіюючої полімерної підкладки). Для розвитку методів покращення якості графічних зображень актуальне завдання розроблення алгоритмічної бази для інструментально-оптичної диференціації таких складових. Зокрема, масштабно-селективного Фур’є аналізу для алгоритмічної диференціації різномасштабніх складових оптичного поля. Ідея такого, нового для графічної інформації, аналітичного підходу базується на просторово-частотній фільтрації різноманітних зображень топографічної інформації на різноманітних носіях. Алгоритмічна реалізація даного методу включає такі узгоджені аналітичні або інструментальні етапи: «пряме Фур’є-перетворення»; «просторово-частотна фільтрація»; «зворотне Фур’є-перетворення» лазерних зображень. Таким чином, актуальним є алгоритмічна розробка нових оптичних і поляризаційних методів обробки графічних зображень з використанням узгодженої просторово-частотної фільтрації для селекції інформаційної та фонової компонент. Наша стаття являє собою один з початкових (у рамках модельного аналізу) кроків у даному напрямі.

This study systematically delves into the intricacies of crime reporting by mass media in postcovid Nigeria, shedding light on its profound impact and intensity. Through meticulous archival methods, historical editions of The Guardian and Punch newspapers were analyzed over three years. The findings highlight a notable emphasis on crimes against individuals, such as murder and assault, compared to other categories like financial and drug-related crimes. Over 4,093 crime incidents were reported, with crimes against persons dominating in 2021 and 2022. The study underscores the need for nuanced crime reporting and advocates for substantive engagement through editorials and analyses. By fostering awareness and discourse, print media can play a pivotal role in shaping public understanding of crime dynamics and promoting societal well-being.

Manuscript and Text Cultures is published in collaboration with the Digital Clay Sanskrit Library (eCSL). The Clay Sanskrit Library is a book series initiated by John P. Clay covering a wide spectrum of Classical Sanskrit literature spanning two millennia. Today, the list of published volumes encompasses fifty-six works. Bound in the convenient pocket size (4.5″×6.5″) in an elegant design, each work features the original Sanskrit text in transliterated Roman letters on the left-hand page with its English translation on the facing page. John P. Clay’s vision came to life in the late 1990s, when he began to put the people and resources together for what would become the Clay Sanskrit Library. Since the publication of the first volume in 2005, fifty-six volumes have been published. The selection represents the richness and wide variety of Sanskrit literature, covering works of drama, poetry, satire, and novels, as well as the two famous epics, the Mahābhārata and the Rāmāyaṇa. The Clay Sanskrit Library titles are in the process of conversion to digital format at the Digital Clay Sanskrit Library (eCSL). In eCSL, the editions retain the facing page translations and they provide additional search and navigation features, thus making it an immediate and practical platform especially to students of Sanskrit. This is an investigation of character-naming expressions in early Greek (ca. eighth–sixth c. BC) and Old Babylonian Akkadian narrative poetry (ca. nineteenth–seventeenth c. BC). It compares the mentions of Zeus and Enlil (the Babylonian chief god) in Iliad Book 8 and OB Atra-hasis, and proposes a three-layered classification system based on degrees of traditionality. The system involves metre and repetition parameters, and accounts for the techniques through which poets in both traditions made the mention sound venerable and ancient. Control cases include other characters in the Iliad (Diomedes, Hector) and OB Akkadian poetry (Isthar, Ea). The resulting figures are commensurate for the two traditions, supporting the hypothesis of a similar degree of orality-literacy interaction. The article seeks to offer a model for fine-grained cross-cultural literary criticism and verse study.

Since the invention of the Indian writing system around the third century BC, Sanskrit literature was no longer exclusively oral. However, not all genres immediately adopted the new possibilities. In order to fully understand the orality and writing of Sanskrit literature, I will first define a threefold division of what I call ‘the compositional complex’, the totality of processes involved in the creation of texts and their subsequent usages. The first stage is the composition of the text, the second is its preservation for the sake of future generations, and the third is its transmission to the audience. Each stage can be oral or written. After a brief discussion of secondary literature on the compositional complex of the Vedas, the Mahābhārata and the Purāṇas, I look for text-internal evidence for the compositional complex of Purāṇas in the Bhaviṣyapurāṇa, ‘the Purāṇa of the future’. On the basis of this single Purāṇa, it is possible to make a reconstruction of the composition, preservation, and transmission of Purāṇas, where orality and writing intertwine.

This paper investigates how Konan Bunzan 湖南文山 confronted the issue of oral effects in the 17 th-century translation Tsūzoku sangokushi 通俗三國志 , a widely-read Japanese serialization of Luo Guanzhong’s 羅貫中 14 th-century Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Despite being a famed written work, belonging to the ‘Four classic Chinese novels’ (si da qishu 四大奇書 ), Luo’s novel contains numerous oral elements which emulate domestic storytelling culture. The fecundity of the text for orality studies is thus apparent. In examining how the oral effects in Luo’s text were changed in translation into Japanese, I first use Idema’s model of the six markers of ‘the storyteller’s manner’ to evaluate how oral effects are mostly lost in translation, paying attention to certain aspects which are omitted over others. Second, I prove that certain oral elements, such as the inclusion of poems in parallel prose into the narrative, undergo less significant changes. Finally, I assess the usefulness of Idema’s framework beyond its original Sinological context, evaluating its applicability to Tsūzoku sangokushi.

Geoffrey Chaucer’s (1343–1400) repeated phrases are a conundrum. Nancy Mason Bradbury has referred to them as ‘formulas’; Derek Brewer has described Chaucer’s poems as having a ‘traditional formulaic style’. But why would a literate poet make use of a device that tends to be associated with orality? This paper offers an alternative comparandum for Chaucer’s repeated phrases: the refrain. As well as writing narrative poetry, Chaucer acknowledges at the end of The Canterbury tales that during his career he has written ‘many a song and many a leccherous lay’ (‘many a song and many a lascivious ditty’). Few of these songs survive, but one in particular—a ballade known as ‘To Rosemounde’—shows Chaucer to have a keen facility with the paradoxical potential of the refrain. ‘To Rosemounde’ survives in only one manuscript copy, paired with Chaucer’s narrative poem Troilus and Criseyde. This manuscript pairing, and Chaucer’s frequent presentation of Troilus and Criseyde itself as a ‘song’, invites a comparison of the poem’s repeated phrases to the refrains of a song lyric. In Troilus, phrases that are repeated at crucial moments—such as ‘I can no more’ and ‘without more’—emulate refrains by holding repetition and closure in an unstable synthesis.

Sermons are a type of text ideally suited for analyzing historical methods of writing orality as a rhetorical technique, illustrating the rhetorical techniques employed to invoke the spoken word on the written page and the responses that the impression of orality was intended to elicit from a sermon’s envisioned audiences. Artes praedicandi, guides to composing and performing sermons, flourished during the High Middle Ages; reading them alongside contemporary sermons allows us to explore how the advice that they gave was carried out in practice. By combining this theoretical approach with the study of the material text—looking at cues particular to the manuscripts in which these works were found, such as punctuation—we can consider how, why, and for whom these texts set out to construct themselves as oral, and perhaps learn something about the methods and intentions of writing (or, perhaps, ‘feigning’) orality in the process.

Poetry in early Germanic vernaculars exhibits variations on a metrical form predicated on a pattern of alliterating stressed syllables linking two halves of a line (in contrast to syllabic metres in which scansion requires a fixed number of syllables per line). This gave rise to the phenomenon of recurring alliterative collocations: the repeated combination of alliterating words or word-roots within a given poetic corpus. It is likely that such collocations originated, like formulae in oral-formulaic theory developed by Milman Parry and A.B. Lord, as building blocks for extempore composition during performance. However, there is strong evidence that Old Norse poetry was composed deliberatively and memorized for performance. Recurring collocations in Old Norse verse therefore reflect conscious artistic design rather than compositional expediency. This article focuses on one such collocation—the adjective vreiðr (angry) and the verb vega (to fight, to strike)—as a case study of the way in which composers of Old Norse eddic verse exploited the traditional resonances of certain collocations to shape audience understanding of character and plot.

This paper aims at broadening the scope of what the term ‘formula’ encompasses by studying a written context of formulaic applications and their complex connections to ritual performance. More specifically, it examines the interplay between the oral and the written in the language of the late Shang 商 (ca. 1230–1046 BC) oracle bone inscriptions (OBI). Drawing on the study on ‘formulaicity’ by Wray and Perkins, I propose a definition of formulae based on the OBI evidence and identify the structure-based formulaic types as found in the divinatory records. I then discuss the functions that formulae perform in the divinatory record. I suggest that formulae should be considered a scribal device, a set of stock phrases and technical words used by the scribes to record divination results. They formed a toolkit which was meant to facilitate the composition of written records on hard media. The writing act occurred after (and separately from) the oral divinatory act. Therefore, the oral and written coexisted but were independent from each other within the context of divinatory performance.

Substantial textual variation found across manuscripts of a Demotic Egyptian novella, The prebend of Amun, bears upon closer examination the features of mouvance, a kind of textual impermanence found in written versions of literature for which performance contexts are not only ongoing but are constitutive of their very textual shape. Alongside this mouvance, manuscripts of this work also maintain a high level of similarity and coherence down to the phrasal and word level. I argue that this unique combination of sameness and mouvance points to the desire of performers who possessed libretto-like copies of The prebend of Amun to tweak their texts in order to match their understanding of this work of prose fiction.

The purpose of this desktop study was to establish the financial performance of print media in advent of social media. We have located the research of this paper within a qualitative approach. This decision was informed by the fact that this paper is not interested in the quantification of data. But its main interest lies in the painting of qualitatively rich picture of the phenomena being studied within the context of limited respondents. To this end, the problem of this study is explained descriptively and theoretically for the purpose of generating a crispy understanding of the financial performance of Print Media in Advent of Social Media. In terms of data collection, the authors sourced and reviewed literature on the topic. Among others, this sources included journal articles, books, magazines and newspapers. The results indicated that social media cause the print media, particularly the newspaper division a huge loss in revenue and advertisement and it also indicated that there is a negative relationship between financial performance and social media.

The exponential growth in digital media has recently challenged the value of print media in the overall marketing mix. Across three studies, the authors evaluate the relative effectiveness of print ads versus digital ads. In Study 1, using eye tracking and biometric measures during exposure, the authors find stronger encoding and engagement for print ads over digital ads. A week later, participants showed no significant difference in recognizing ads across format, though they better remembered the encoding context of print ads. Notably, using functional magnetic resonance imaging, the authors find greater activation in hippocampus and parahippocampal regions for print ads relative to digital ads. Extending these insights, Study 2 demonstrates that participants better remember print ads across contents, context, and brand associations when using snippets as retrieval cues. In addition to establishing the robustness of previous findings, Study 3 provides further evidence that the observed memory advantage for print ads is primarily due to superior encoding during initial exposure. From a practical perspective, these findings suggest that marketers should not discount the value of print media in advertising, despite the rapid growth of digital media and communications.
