Despite some progress, universal access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) by 2030-a remit of Sustainable Development Goal 6-remains a distant prospect in many countries. Policy-makers and implementers of the WASH sector are challenged to track a new path. This research aimed to identify core orienting themes of the sector, as legacies of past processes, which can provide insights for its future. We reviewed global policy, science and programmatic documents and carried out 19 expert interviews to track the evolution of the global WASH sector over seven decades. We situated this evolution in relation to wider trends in global health and development over the same time period.With transnational flows of concern, expertise and resources from high-income to lower-income countries, the WASH sector evolved over decades of international institutionalisation of health and development with (1) a focus on technologies (technicalisation), (2) a search for generalised solutions (universalisation), (3) attempts to make recipients responsible for environmental health (responsibilisation) and (4) the shaping of programmes around quantifiable outcomes (metricisation). The emergent commitment of the WASH sector to these core themes reflects a pragmatic response in health and development to depoliticise poverty and social inequalities in order to enable action. This leads to questions about what potential solutions have been obscured, a recognition which might be understood as 'uncomfortable knowledge'-the knowns that have had to be unknown, which resonate with concerns about deep inequalities, shrinking budgets and the gap between what could and has been achieved.

INTRODUCTION: As timeliness metrics gain traction to assess and optimise outbreak detection and response performance, implementation and scale-up require insight into the perspectives of stakeholders adopting these tools. This study sought to characterise the feasibility and utility of tracking One Health outbreak milestones across relevant human, animal, plant, and environmental sectors to systematically quantify timeliness metrics in Uganda, a country prone to outbreaks of WHO priority diseases. METHODS: A database of outbreak events occurring in Uganda between 2018 and 2022 was compiled. Outbreak reports meeting our inclusion criteria were reviewed to quantify the frequency of milestone reporting. Key informant interviews were conducted with expert stakeholders to explore the feasibility and utility of tracking metrics using a framework analysis. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analysed concurrently. RESULTS: Of the 282 public health emergencies occurring between 2018 and 2022, 129 events met our inclusion criteria, and complete data were available for 82 outbreaks. For our qualitative portion, 10 informants were interviewed from 7 institutions, representing the human, animal and environmental sectors. Informants agreed most One Health milestones are feasible to track, which was supported by the frequency of milestone reporting; however, there was a demonstrated need for increased reporting of after-action reviews, as well as outbreak start and end dates. Predictive alerts signalling potential outbreaks and preventive responses to alerts are seen as challenging to routinely capture, reflecting the lack of public health action for these domains. CONCLUSION: Despite consensus among stakeholders that timeliness metrics are a beneficial tool to assess outbreak performance, not all One Health metrics are being tracked consistently, thereby missing opportunities to optimise epidemic intelligence, preparedness and prevention. The feasibility of tracking these metrics depends on the integration of reporting channels, enhanced documentation of milestones and development of guidance for early adopters, recognising country-specific on-the-ground realities and challenges to national scaling efforts.

The increasing threat of antibiotic resistance and shrinking treatment options for infections have pushed mankind into a difficult position. The looming threat of the return of the pre-antibiotic era has caused a sense of urgency to protect and conserve the potency of antibiotic therapy. One of the perverse effects of antibiotic resistance is the dissemination of its causative agents from non-clinically important strains to clinically important strains and vice versa. The popular saying "Prevention is better than cure" is appropriate for tackling antibiotic resistance. On the one hand, new and effective antibiotics are required; on the other hand, better measures for the use of antibiotics, along with increased awareness in the general public related to antibiotic use, are essential. Awareness, especially of appropriate antibiotic use, antibiotic resistance, its dissemination, and potential threats, can help greatly in controlling the use and abuse of antibiotics, and the containment of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic drugs' effectiveness can be enhanced by producing novel antibiotic analogs or adding adjuvants to current antibiotics. Combinatorial therapy of antibiotics has proven successful in treating multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. This review aims to highlight the current global situation of antibiotic resistance and discuss the methods used to monitor, prevent, inhibit, or reverse bacterial resistance mechanisms in the fight against antibiotic resistance. Background At present, the relationship between the Triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index) and Acute kidney injury (AKI) in traumatic brain injury patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is still unclear. Currently, the relationship between TyG index and AKI occurred within 7 days in the ICU is a highly researched and trending topic. Objective In this study, we conducted in-depth exploration of the relationship between the development of AKI in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients in the ICU and changes in TyG index, as well as its relevance. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 492 individuals enrolled in the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV(MIMIC-IV) database. Multivariate model logistic regression, smoothed curve fitting and forest plots were utilized to confirm the study objectives. The predictive power of the TyG index for outcome indicators was assessed using subject work characteristics (ROC) curves. As well as comparing the Integrated Discriminant Improvement Index and the Net Reclassification Index of the traditional forecasting model with the addition of the TyG index. Results Of all eligible subjects, 55.9% were male and the incidence of AKI was 59.3%. There was a statistically significant difference in the incidence of AKI within 7 days in the ICU between the different TyG index groups. The difference between TyG index and the risk of AKI within 7 days in the ICU remained significant after adjustment for logistic multifactorial modeling (OR = 2.07, 95% CI = 1.41–3.05, P < 0.001). A similar pattern of associations was observed in subgroup analyses (P values for all interactions were greater than 0.05). The addition of TyG index to the traditional risk factor model improved the predictive power of the risk of AKI within 7 days in ICU (P < 0.05). Conclusion The findings of this study demonstrate a strong association between the TyG index and the occurrence of AKI within 7 days in ICU patients. The TyG index can potentially be used as a risk stratification tool for early identification and prevention of AKI. Implementing preventive strategies targeting patients with a high TyG index may help reduce the burden of AKI in the ICU. Background: The relationship between physical activity and low back pain (LBP) in adolescents is complex, with conflicting evidence on whether activity is protective or a risk factor. The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced new challenges, increasing sedentary behaviors among adolescents. This systematic review updates the evidence on the association between physical activity and LBP in this population, focusing on the impact of the pandemic. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Medline, and SCOPUS identified observational studies published between January 2011 and December 2023. This review focused on adolescents aged 10 to 19 years, examining the effects of various physical activity levels and types on LBP incidence. Quality assessment was conducted using the ROBINS-I tool. Results: Twelve studies were included, with a total of 78,850 adolescents. The findings suggest a U-shaped relationship between physical activity and LBP, where low and high activity levels increase LBP risk, while moderate activity appears protective. The pandemic exacerbated LBP prevalence, likely due to increased sedentary behavior. Gender differences were noted, with females more likely to report LBP, particularly related to sports participation. Conclusions: Moderate physical activity may protect against LBP in adolescents, whereas both inactivity and excessive activity heighten risk. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges globally, with a notable surge in gender-based violence (GBV) incidents. This descriptive, exploratory study conducted in the Golden Valley mining community in Kadoma, Mashonaland West Province, Zimbabwe, delves into the challenges faced by GBV survivors during and after the pandemic, alongside community perceptions of GBV in the post-COVID-19 era. Guided by Bronfenbrenner's Social-Ecological Model which offers insights into the various levels of influence on GBV behavior and experiences,aiding in the development of contextually relevant prevention strategies. The study used qualitative methods such as interviews and focus group discussions, there were 24 study participant classified by random and convenient sampling techniques including traditional and community leaders, gbv surviours medical personnel and male and female, community members. The research followed the COREQ guidelines to transparently document the research process and findings. The research sheds light on the multifaceted nature of GBV exacerbated by societal norms and economic instability in a low-income, masculine-dominated work culture experience in the COVID-19 period. Findings underscore the urgent need for comprehensive prevention programs, effective legislation, and community engagement to address GBV in post-pandemic communities. Nosocomial infection has significant consequences in health care, both at the individual level due to increased morbidity and mortality, and at the organizational level due to increased costs. Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) is the most common nosocomial infection, and is associated with high excess mortality, frequent use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials and increased length of stay. This review explores the preventative strategies that have been examined in non-ventilator HAP (NV-HAP). The management of aspiration risk, interventions for oral hygiene, role of mobilization and physiotherapy, modification of environmental factors, and vaccination are discussed. Many of these interventions are low risk, acceptable to patients and have good cost–benefit ratios. However, the evidence base for prevention of NV-HAP is weak. This review identifies the lack of a unified research definition, under-recruitment to studies, and variation in intervention and outcome measures as limitations in the existing literature. Given that the core risk factors for acquisition of NV-HAP are increasing, there is an urgent need for research to address the prevention of NV-HAP. This review calls for a unified definition of NV-HAP, and identification of a core outcome set for studies in NV-HAP, and suggests future directions for research in NV-HAP. Purpose: Leg length discrepancy (LLD) is a common complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA). The direct anterior approach (DAA) for THA is gaining popularity due to its advantages, but there is limited research on the incidence and size of LLD. This systematic review aims to explore the differences in LLD between DAA and other approaches, as well as the techniques to control LLD in DAA. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify relevant studies comparing THA by DAA with other surgical approaches and investigating methods to control LLD in DAA, following PRISMA guidelines and a priori registration on PROSPERO (CRD42023412644). The quality of the included studies was assessed. Data on preoperative and postoperative LLD and other relevant outcomes were extracted and analyzed descriptively. Results: In total, 29 studies were included in this systematic review. The majority (86%) were classified as level IV evidence. Comparisons between DAA and posterior approach (PA) or anterolateral approach (ALA) showed DAA had lower rates of LLD >10 mm compared to PA and ALA. Different pre- and intra-operative techniques were evaluated, but no consensus on the best method for preventing LLD in DAA was reached. Conclusion: DAA shows comparable or superior results in the prevention of LLD compared to other surgical approaches. Supine patient placement, direct leg measurement, and the use of IF contribute to these outcomes. Intraoperative fluoroscopy with a grid and preoperative planning offers a good option, especially for training purposes, but its role in preventing LLD by experienced DAA surgeons needs further investigation.

Wildfires represent a critical environmental and social challenge, with long-term implications for human health, ecosystems, and infrastructure. This complex issue is exacerbated by various factors, including socioeconomic changes, unsustainable practices in agro-forestry land management, and the intensification of extreme weather events. The complexity of fire management in Italy necessitates effective governance mechanisms and planning tools at both regional and national levels. This study looks at successful prevention strategies, such as prescribed burning and proactive land management, while also addressing existing governance challenges, such as coordination among relevant institutions and the need for stronger regulatory frameworks. In addition to providing insights into the current state of fire governance and proposing practical solutions, we suggest that more resilient and sustainable fire management practices, already successfully implemented in some regions, should be adopted nationwide in Italy.

Background/Objectives: Given the complex nature of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury, it is important to analyze its etiology with suitable approaches in order to formulate intervention strategies for effective prevention. The present study employs system thinking techniques to develop a Causal Loop Diagram (CLD) Model for investigating the risk factors for ACL Injury (CLD-ACLI), through a Group Model Building approach. Methods: A two-stage procedure was applied involving a comprehensive literature review followed by several systems thinking group-modeling co-creation workshops with stakeholders. Results: Based on input from experts and stakeholders, combined with the latest scientific findings, the derived CLD-ACLI model revealed a series of interesting complex nonlinear interrelationships causal loops between the likelihood of ACL injury and the number of risk factors. Particularly, the interaction among institutional, psychological, neurocognitive, neuromuscular, malalignment factors, and trauma history seem to affect neuromuscular control, which subsequently may alter the biomechanics of landing, predisposing the ACL to injury. Further, according to the proposed CLD-ACLI model, the risk for injury may increase further if specific environmental and anatomical factors affect the shear forces imposed on the ACL. Conclusions: The proposed CLD-ACLI model constitutes a rigorous useful conceptual presentation agreed upon among experts on the dynamic interactions among potential intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors for ACL injury. The presented causal loop model constitutes a vital step for developing a validated quantitative system dynamics simulation model for evaluating ACL injury-prevention strategies prior to implementation. (1) Background: Burn injuries in children present a significant public health concern due to their potential for severe physical and psychological impact. (2) Methods: This study investigates the determinants of pediatric burn severity by analyzing the interplay of demographic and environmental factors. Through a retrospective analysis of pediatric burn cases over five years, encompassing patient demographics, burn causative agents, and clinical outcomes, this research aims to identify significant predictors of burn severity. (3) Results: This study presents a comprehensive analysis of pediatric burn injuries, focusing on the severity, clinical outcomes, and multifactorial aspects influencing recovery. We reviewed 1498 pediatric burn cases from January 2015 to December 2020. The mean age of patients was 5.8 years, with a slight male predominance (54%). Scalds (45%), flame burns (30%), and contact burns (15%) were the most common burn types. Our findings indicate significant differences in burn severity based on TBSA, with 32.5% of cases having TBSA greater than 20%. Multivariate logistic regression identified rural residence, male gender, flame burns, and lower socioeconomic status as significant predictors of severe burn outcomes. The overall mortality rate was 2.5%, with higher rates among patients with TBSA greater than 40%. These results highlight the need for targeted prevention strategies and improved access to specialized burn care. Introduction: The emergence of novel infectious diseases has amplified the urgent need for effective prevention strategies, especially ones targeting vulnerable populations such as children. Factors such as the high incidence of both emerging and existing infectious diseases, delays in vaccinations, and routine exposure in communal settings heighten children's susceptibility to infections. Despite this pressing need, a comprehensive exploration of research trends in this domain remains lacking. This study aims to address this gap by employing text mining and modeling techniques to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the existing literature, thereby identifying emerging research trends in infectious disease prevention among children. Methods: A cross‐sectional text mining approach was adopted, focusing on journal articles published between January 1, 2003, and August 31, 2022. These articles, related to infectious disease prevention in children, were sourced from databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE (Ovid), Scopus, and Korean RISS. The data underwent preprocessing using the Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK) in Python, with a semantic network analysis and topic modeling conducted using R software. Results: The final dataset comprised 509 journal articles extracted from multiple databases. The study began with a word frequency analysis to pinpoint relevant themes, subsequently visualized through a word cloud. Dominant terms encompassed "vaccination," "adolescent," "infant," "parent," "family," "school," "country," "household," "community," "HIV," "HPV," "COVID‐19," "influenza," and "diarrhea." The semantic analysis identified "age" as a key term across infection, control, and intervention discussions. Notably, the relationship between "hand" and "handwashing" was prominent, especially in educational contexts linked with "school" and "absence." Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling further delineated seven topics related to infectious disease prevention for children, encompassing (1) educational programs, (2) vaccination efforts, (3) family‐level responses, (4) care for immunocompromised individuals, (5) country‐specific responses, (6) school‐based strategies, and (7) persistent threats from established infectious diseases. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the indispensable role of personalized interventions tailored for various child demographics, highlighting the pivotal contributions of both parental guidance and school participation. Clinical Relevance: The study provides insights into the complex public health challenges associated with preventing and managing infectious diseases in children. The insights derived could inform the formulation of evidence‐based public health policies, steering practical interventions and fostering interdisciplinary synergy for holistic prevention strategies. Changing eating habits and an increase in consumption of thermally processed products have increased the risk of the harmful impact of chemical substances in food on consumer health. A 2002 report by the Swedish National Food Administration and scientists at Stockholm University on the formation of acrylamide in food products during frying, baking and grilling contributed to an increase in scientific interest in the subject. Acrylamide is a product of Maillard’s reaction, which is a non-enzymatic chemical reaction between reducing sugars and amino acids that takes place during thermal processing. The research conducted over the past 20 years has shown that consumption of acrylamide-containing products leads to disorders in human and animal organisms. The gastrointestinal tract is a complex regulatory system that determines the transport, grinding, and mixing of food, secretion of digestive juices, blood flow, growth and differentiation of tissues, and their protection. As the main route of acrylamide absorption from food, it is directly exposed to the harmful effects of acrylamide and its metabolite—glycidamide. Despite numerous studies on the effect of acrylamide on the digestive tract, no comprehensive analysis of the impact of this compound on the morphology, innervation, and secretory functions of the digestive system has been made so far. Acrylamide present in food products modifies the intestine morphology and the activity of intestinal enzymes, disrupts enteric nervous system function, affects the gut microbiome, and increases apoptosis, leading to gastrointestinal tract dysfunction. It has also been demonstrated that it interacts with other substances in food in the intestines, which increases its toxicity. This paper summarises the current knowledge of the impact of acrylamide on the gastrointestinal tract, including the enteric nervous system, and refers to strategies aimed at reducing its toxic effect. The gut microbiota influences many aspects of the host, including immune system maturation, nutrient absorption and metabolism, and protection from pathogens. Increasing evidences from cohort and animal studies indicate that changes in the gut microbiota early in life increases the risk of developing specific diseases early and later in life. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly important to identify specific disease prevention or therapeutic solutions targeting the gut microbiota, especially during infancy, which is the window of the human gut microbiota establishment process. In this review, we provide an overview of current knowledge concerning the relationship between disturbances in the gut microbiota early in life and health consequences later in life (e.g., necrotizing enterocolitis, celiac disease, asthma, allergies, autism spectrum disorders, overweight/obesity, diabetes and growth retardation), with a focus on changes in the gut microbiota prior to disease onset. In addition, we summarize and discuss potential microbiota-based interventions early in life (e.g., diet adjustments, probiotics, prebiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, environmental changes) to promote health or prevent the development of specific diseases. This knowledge should aid the understanding of early life microbiology and inform the development of prediction and prevention measures for short- and long-term health disorders based on the gut microbiota. The escalating prevalence of diabetes mellitus presents concern due to its widespread organ damage, including the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves, leading to severe complications such as heart attacks, strokes, blindness, and diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFUs). Management in the community setting should be focused on prevention, assessment and patient-centred care. By understanding the complex aetiology, risk factors, and classification of DFUs, along with utilising evidence-based interventions like the Wound, Infection and Ischemia (WIfI) system, we can streamline care. Neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease and infection are major contributors to DFU development, highlighting the importance of early detection and intervention. Comprehensive care addressing vascular health, infection control, pressure offloading, wound management, metabolic control, and patient education is essential for successful DFU management. Ultimately, proactive prevention strategies and interdisciplinary collaboration are necessary in the management of DFUs and improving patient outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The looming threat of the return of the pre-antibiotic era has caused a sense of urgency to protect and conserve the potency of antibiotic therapy. One of the perverse effects of antibiotic resistance is the dissemination of its causative agents from non-clinically important strains to clinically important strains and vice versa. The popular saying “Prevention is better than cure” is appropriate for tackling antibiotic resistance. On the one hand, new and effective antibiotics are required; on the other hand, better measures for the use of antibiotics, along with increased awareness in the general public related to antibiotic use, are essential. Awareness, especially of appropriate antibiotic use, antibiotic resistance, its dissemination, and potential threats, can help greatly in controlling the use and abuse of antibiotics, and the containment of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic drugs’ effectiveness can be enhanced by producing novel antibiotic analogs or adding adjuvants to current antibiotics. Combinatorial therapy of antibiotics has proven successful in treating multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. This review aims to highlight the current global situation of antibiotic resistance and discuss the methods used to monitor, prevent, inhibit, or reverse bacterial resistance mechanisms in the fight against antibiotic resistance.

Health care-associated infections (HCAIs) pose a substantial threat to immunocompromised individuals and represent a frequent adverse event in health care delivery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the global research landscape of HCAIs among immunocompromised populations before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. A systematic search of articles published between 2013 and 2022 in the Web of Science Core Collection database was conducted, and content analytics and integrated science mapping were used for data analysis and interpretation. The review identified 1,473 articles. Only 633 articles authored by 4,151 individuals and published in 366 journals were included. The average citation rate was 14.27 per document, and research production grew annually by 9.07% peaking in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic but declining in 2022. The United States emerged as the most productive country, with 743 publication appearances and 2,485 citations. Keywords such as “epidemiology,” “infection,” “mortality,” and “risk factors” were frequently encountered in the analyzed literature. The main research themes, including “mortality,” “sepsis,” “immunosuppression,” “expression,” and “pneumonia,” underscored the focal points of importance within this domain. This study highlighted the growing interest regarding HCAIs in immunocompromised populations, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study findings underscore the need to advance research efforts to understand different immunocompromised states, develop tailored infection prevention measures, and address health care disparities to mitigate the burden of HCAIs among immunocompromised individuals.

Inhalation nebulization therapy is important for administering medications to patients in aerosolized form. However, there are persistent apprehensions in healthcare settings regarding aerosol contamination because of the significant infection risk. Despite rigorous adherence to established hospital protocols, concerns about potential contamination and transmission persist, raising considerable apprehension about nosocomial pneumonia. This condition shows the urgent need for implementing highly effective strategies to ensure patient safety during nebulization therapy. Therefore, this study aimed to review current investigations, focusing on interventions to mitigate aerosol contamination and minimize the transmission of contaminated aerosols. Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, this systematic review included an exhaustive analysis of randomized and non-randomized clinical trials as well as, simulated experimental and in vitro studies published in English in the past decade. A meticulous search was conducted across four major databases, namely ScienceDirect, Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health (CINAHL), PubMed, and Scopus. A total of 37 pertinent studies were identified and subjected to rigorous analysis. The preventive measures include a range of strategies, such as the use of masks by therapists, thorough disinfection of nebulizers, integration of filters, and regular environmental cleaning in the vicinity of the patient. In conclusion, these multifaceted interventions are significant in preventing the administration of contaminated aerosols and curbing the proliferation of infectious agents in the hospital environment.

Adultery is a serious offense which is prohibited in Islam. Adultery may cause a lot of repercussions, among them sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also referred to as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). These infections are sexually transmitted through vaginal, anal, and oral. The significance of the research emerged due to a large number of deaths emanating from HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases caused by adultery; for example, statistically, about 374 million people living with STIs and more than 1 million sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are acquired every day worldwide. A qualitative data analysis has been deployed in this study that has been gathered from a variety of sources, they include books, journal articles, reports, conference papers, and websites. The information has been analyzed through an explanatory research approach by providing scholars’ opinions and their arguments on the subject matter. Most importantly, this research has established that Islam indeed has put in place some preventive measures to reduce the risk of multi-crimes occurring and their potential harmful effects on individuals and the society at large, and more so, in reference to our study including: self-accountability, lowering the gaze (by shifting away on what is illegal to look at), meet with a non-mahram woman in privacy, shaking hands with a non-mahram woman, tabarruj (make-up grooming), command women to stay at home, wear Hijab for modesty and chastity, indulge in marriage and accept polygamy, impose penalty for adulterous disobedient, among others. In this regard, it is therefore, recommended to implement the preventive strategies set by Islam for the crime of adultery to uphold societal mortality and preserve the wellbeing of the society at a broader spectrum.

Alterations in a mother’s metabolism and endocrine system, due to unbalanced nutrition, may increase the risk of both metabolic and non-metabolic disorders in the offspring’s childhood and adulthood. The risk of obesity in the offspring can be determined by the interplay between maternal nutrition and lifestyle, intrauterine environment, epigenetic modifications, and early postnatal factors. Several studies have indicated that the fetal bowel begins to colonize before birth and that, during birth and nursing, the gut microbiota continues to change. The mother’s gut microbiota is primarily transferred to the fetus through maternal nutrition and the environment. In this way, it is able to impact the establishment of the early fetal and neonatal microbiome, resulting in epigenetic signatures that can possibly predispose the offspring to the development of obesity in later life. However, antioxidants and exercise in the mother have been shown to improve the offspring’s metabolism, with improvements in leptin, triglycerides, adiponectin, and insulin resistance, as well as in the fetal birth weight through epigenetic mechanisms. Therefore, in this extensive literature review, we aimed to investigate the relationship between maternal diet, epigenetics, and gut microbiota in order to expand on current knowledge and identify novel potential preventative strategies for lowering the risk of obesity in children and adults.

Summary: Introduction: This study investigates the impact of invasive procedures on healthcare-associated infections (HAI) at Policlinico Universitario Tor Vergata in Rome, Italy, aiming to understand their role in device-associated HAI and to inform prevention strategies. Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted, examining mandatory discharge records and microbiology data from 2018 across all departments. The study focused on adult patients, analysing the correlation between invasive procedures and HAI through univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results: Of the 12,066 patients reviewed, 1,214 (10.1%) experienced HAI. Univariate analysis indicated an association between invasive procedures and HAI (OR = 1.81, P < 0.001), which was not observed in multivariable analysis. Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a highly infectious and economically devastating viral disease of cattle. It is caused by Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (LSDV) belonging to the genus Capripoxvirus and family Poxviridae. The origin of lumpy skin disease has been traced to Zambia, (an African nation) in Southern part during the year 1929. The first reported case of LSD besides Africa was from Israel, a Middle Eastern nation, thus proving inter-continental spread. Subsequently, the disease entered Middle East, Eastern Europe and Asia with numerous outbreaks in the recent years. LSD has emerged as a significant concern in the Indian sub-continent, due to outbreaks reported in countries such as Bangladesh, India, China in 2019. In the following years, other South and East Asian countries like Taipei, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bhutan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Pakistan, Indonesia and Singapore also faced severe outbreaks. At present, LSD is considered to be an emerging disease in the Indian sub-continent due to the recent status of disease. Considering the global scenario, LSDV is changing its transmission dynamics as evidenced by a shift in its epidemiology. As a result of high morbidity and mortality rate among cattle, the current outbreaks have been a major cause of socio-economic catastrophe. This contagious viral disease has eminent repercussions as the estimated monetary damage incurred is quite high. Despite having networked surveillance and comprehensive databases, the recurring outbreaks have raised major concern among researchers. Therefore, this review offers brief insights into the emergence of LSDV by amalgamating the newest literature related to its biology, transmission, clinico-pathology, epidemiology, prevention strategies, and economic consequences. Childhood obesity has become a global epidemic, with significant increases in prevalence over recent decades. While excessive calorie consumption and physical inactivity are known factors, emerging research highlights the role of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), particularly obesogens, in obesity's pathogenesis. This review explores the historical context of the environmental obesogens hypothesis, their sources, mechanism of action, impact on prenatal and postnatal development, and epigenetics. Additionally, it discusses the long-term consequences of childhood obesity and proposes prevention strategies that will mitigate negative health effects. Obesogens were found to disrupt hormonal balance and metabolic processes through various mechanisms such as altering gene expression, hormonal interference, and inflammation. Especially significant was exposure during critical windows of development, which correlates with an increased risk of obesity in childhood or adolescence. Long-term effects of childhood obesity include chronic health conditions and psychosocial issues. A comprehensive approach is necessary to address childhood obesity encompassing genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Prevention strategies should focus on reducing obesogen exposure, promoting healthy lifestyles, and implementing regulatory policies. Future research should investigate obesogens–diet interactions, microbiome impacts, and combined obesogens effects. AbstractObjectiveMethodsResultsConclusionTo analyze the risk factors associated with postoperative stroke complications in cardiac surgery.A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 549 patients who underwent cardiac surgery. Among these patients, 501 did not experience a stroke postoperatively (non-stroke group), while 48 developed a postoperative stroke (stroke group). Patients who experienced a stroke postoperatively were divided into two groups based on the type of surgery: those who underwent surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (18 patients) and those without cardiopulmonary bypass (30 patients). The clinical characteristics of the two groups of patients with postoperative strokes were compared, and the risk factors influencing the occurrence of postoperative stroke complications in cardiac surgery were analyzed.① Clinical findings: Cardiopulmonary bypass group had lower cortical infarction rates but higher large-area and bilateral infarction rates compared to the non-cardiopulmonary bypass group (p < 0.05). No significant gender, age, or infarction type differences were observed (p > 0.05). ② Univariate analysis: No significant differences were found in gender, smoking, alcohol, lipids, or glucose levels (p > 0.05). However, age, education, hypertension, diabetes, hypotension, and atrial fibrillation showed significant differences (p < 0.05). ③ Multivariate Logistic regression: Age, education, hypertension, diabetes, hypotension, and atrial fibrillation were independent risk factors for postoperative stroke complications (p < 0.05).Cardiopulmonary bypass increases risk of large-area and bilateral strokes; non-bypass surgery associates with cortical strokes. This complex issue is exacerbated by various factors, including socioeconomic changes, unsustainable practices in agro-forestry land management, and the intensification of extreme weather events. The complexity of fire management in Italy necessitates effective governance mechanisms and planning tools at both regional and national levels. This study looks at successful prevention strategies, such as prescribed burning and proactive land management, while also addressing existing governance challenges, such as coordination among relevant institutions and the need for stronger regulatory frameworks. In addition to providing insights into the current state of fire governance and proposing practical solutions, we suggest that more resilient and sustainable fire management practices, already successfully implemented in some regions, should be adopted nationwide in Italy. Cyberbullying has emerged as a pervasive issue in today's digitally connected society, with detrimental effects on individuals' mental health and well-being. Despite increasing awareness and efforts to address cyberbullying, there remains a significant gap in utilizing wireless network security measures as a means of mitigation. The existing literature predominantly focuses on social and psychological aspects of cyberbullying, overlooking the potential role of wireless network security in prevention and intervention strategies. This research seeks to fill this gap by exploring the effectiveness of leveraging wireless network security to secure cyberspace against cyberbullying incidents. The research employs a multifaceted methodology, beginning with the estimation of expected rates and derivative risks of cyberbullying within wireless networks. These metrics are combined into a risk index value, which serves as a basis for prioritizing mitigation efforts. Additionally, the study explores the application of cyberspace modeling techniques, specifically Support Vector Machines (SVM), to enhance screening processes and identify potential cyberbullying incidents on Wireless Network Security (WNS). Fungal infections caused by Aspergillus fumigatus, Trichophyton verrucosum, and Candida albicans can cause respiratory diseases, dermatophytosis, and diarrhea, respectively. Protozoan parasites, including Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia duodenalis, and Eimeria spp., are also common in dairy calves. C. parvum is highly contagious and can cause severe diarrhea and dehydration, while Giardia duodenalis can lead to poor growth and is transmissible to humans through contaminated food or water. Eimeria spp. can cause coccidiosis and lead to reduced growth rates, poor feed conversion, and death. The common helminthic infections in dairy calves include Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia spp., Fasciola hepatica, and Strongyloides papillosus. These parasitic infections significantly impact calf health, growth, and dairy industry productivity. Diagnosis of these infections can be made through fecal samples using microscopy or molecular methods. However, diagnosis of the infections can be challenging and requires a combination of clinical signs and laboratory tests such as culture and PCR. Preventing and controlling eukaryotic infections in dairy calves requires several measures. Good hygiene and sanitation practices, proper management strategies, and timely treatment of affected animals are important. It is also necessary to avoid overcrowding and consider vaccination against ringworm. Further research is needed to better understand the epidemiology and characterization of eukaryotic infections in dairy calves, which will help in the development of more effective prevention and control strategies. Abstract Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) were responsible for 20.5 million annual deaths globally in 2021, with a disproportionally high burden in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). There is growing evidence of the use of citizen science and co-design approaches in developing interventions in different fields, but less so in the context of CVD prevention interventions in SSA. This paper reports on the collaborative multi-country project that employed citizen science and a co-design approach to (i) explore CVD risk perceptions, (ii) develop tailored prevention strategies, and (iii) support advocacy in different low-income settings in SSA. Methods This is a participatory citizen science study with a co-design component. Data was collected from 205 participants aged 18 to 75 years in rural and urban communities in Malawi, Ethiopia and Rwanda, and urban South Africa. Fifty-one trained citizen scientists used a mobile app-based (EpiCollect) semi-structured survey questionnaire to collect data on CVD risk perceptions from participants purposively selected from two communities per country. Data collected per community included 100–150 photographs and 150–240 voice recordings on CVD risk perceptions, communication and health-seeking intentions. Thematic and comparative analysis were undertaken with the citizen scientists and the results were used to support citizen scientists-led stakeholder advocacy workshops. Findings are presented using bubble graphs based on weighted proportions of key risk factors indicated. Results Nearly three in every five of the participants interviewed reported having a relative with CVD. The main perceived causes of CVD in all communities were substance use, food-related factors, and litter, followed by physical inactivity, emotional factors, poverty, crime, and violence. The perceived positive factors for cardiovascular health were nutrition, physical activity, green space, and clean/peaceful communities. Multi-level stakeholders (45–84 persons/country) including key decision makers participated in advocacy workshops and supported the identification and prioritization of community-specific CVD prevention strategies and implementation actions. Citizen science-informed CVD risk screening and referral to care interventions were piloted in six communities in three countries with about 4795 adults screened and those at risk referred for care. Health sector stakeholders indicated their support for utilising a citizen-engaged approach in national NCDs prevention programmes. The citizen scientists were excited by the opportunity to lead research and advocacy. Conclusion The collaborative engagement, participatory learning, and co-designing activities enhanced active engagement between citizen scientists, researchers, and stakeholders. This, in turn, provided context-specific insights on CVD prevention in the different SSA settings.

This study aimed to explore the current evidence on preventing blood-borne virus infections among people who inject drugs (PWID). We conducted a comprehensive search across three databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library) for relevant articles published in English between 2014 and 2023. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, assessed the quality of the paper using the revised Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool (ROB 2), and conducted a meta-analysis using RevMan 5.3. Completing the harm reduction program (HRP) participation and receiving all three vaccine doses resulted in a 28% reduction in the risk of HBV infection (OR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.37–1.42). Various interventions increased the willingness of PWIDs to undergo HCV treatment (OR: 5.91, 95% CI: 2.46–14.24) and promoted treatment adherence (OR: 15.04, 95% CI: 2.80–80.61). Taking PrEP, participating in HRP, and modifying risky behaviors were associated with a 33% reduction in the risk of HIV infection (OR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.61–0.74). Conducting referrals, providing counseling, and implementing antiretroviral therapy resulted in a 44% reduction in the risk of viral transmission (OR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.47–0.66). The perinatal period is crucial in women's lives in their way toward motherhood. Pregnant women and new mothers are at higher risk for experiencing mental health issues due to a variety of physiological, psychological, cognitive, and social changes. According to current studies among pregnant women and new mothers, anxiety and depression are on the rise, especially in resource-constrained countries. Poor mental well-being during pregnancy is a significant public health issue and the greatest unaddressed health problem in the reproductive health arena. It leads to a range of adverse outcomes for both mothers and children. Apart from short-term morbidity, maternal mental illness has a negative effect on family functioning as well as on infants' cognitive, physical, social, and behavioral growth. However, maternal mental health problems can be prevented to a large extent, and well-being can be promoted. But in resource-constrained countries, research on preventive and promotion intervention specific to the perinatal period is minimal. The present narrative review poses an agenda to strengthen mental health promotion in pregnant women in resource-constrained nations. The review explores the relevant literature about the significance of maternal mental health promotion, the effectiveness of promotion and prevention strategies, barriers to sustainable mental health, and the way forward. Purpose Smoking cessation intervention is one of the key components of successful lung cancer screening program. We investigated the effectiveness and related factors of smoking cessation services provided to the participants in a population-based lung cancer screening trial. Materials and Methods The Korean Lung Cancer Screening Project (K-LUCAS) is a nationwide, multi-center lung cancer screening trial that evaluates the feasibility of implementing population-based lung cancer screening. All 5,144 current smokers who participated in the K-LUCAS received a mandatory smoking cessation counseling. Changes in smoking status were followed up using a telephone survey in 6 months after lung cancer screening participation. The lung cancer screening's impact on smoking cessation is analyzed by variations in the smoking cessation interventions provided in screening units. Results Among 4,136 survey responders, participant's motivation to quit smoking increased by 9.4% on average after lung cancer screening. After 6 months from the initial screening, 24.3% of participants stopped smoking, and 10.6% of participants had not smoked continuously for at least 6 months after screening. Over 80% of quitters stated that participation in lung cancer screening motivated them to quit smoking. Low-cost public smoking cessation program combined with lung cancer screening increased the abstinence rates. The smokers were three times more likely to quit smoking when the smoking cessation counseling was provided simultaneously with low-dose computed tomography screening results than when provided separately. Conclusion A mandatory smoking cessation intervention integrated with screening result counselling by a physician after participation in lung cancer screening could be effective for increasing smoking cessation attempts. They provide guidance and support, cultivating within us the capacity to withstand adversity, maintain strong mental health, and flourish. By fostering resilience and protective factors, they empower us to overcome challenges and avoid harmful influences that could impede our development and negatively impact the child's growth. These wrong ways manifest as behaviors (such as aggression, reticence, etc.) that express that something is wrong and that we need help. The role of adults and the community is to recognize these calls for help and intervene so that these pathways do not develop into bigger problems and prevent us from fully realizing ourselves as healthy and happy individuals. There are numerous reasons why children begin to adopt risky behavior patterns. The need for early detection of risk factors from the child's immediate environment, which may be the cause of risky behavior, becomes increasingly important, especially because children in whom risky behaviors are detected early are exposed to a risk that-will later be recognized as social incompetence. In order to prevent the occurrence of risky behaviors in children, it is necessary to act preventively. In this paper, the risky behaviors of children are defined, some of the risk factors that encourage risky behaviors are presented, and the importance of quality prevention is emphasized. Sexual assault and sexual harassment (SASH) remain pressing issues on university campuses, making it imperative for higher education institutions to develop prevention strategies. Within this context, education plays a pivotal role in addressing the underlying factors contributing to SASH, while also providing crucial information about care and support pathways for survivors. This paper, authored by practitioners from the Australian National University’s (ANU) Respectful Relationships Unit (RRU), reflects on the conceptualisation, implementation, and evaluation of a large-scale respect and consent education program. Tailored to ANU's context, the program utilised a multi-modal approach including an online module, face-to-face workshops, and residential hall pilots. Challenges, such as engagement and sustainability, were addressed through collaborative partnerships and continuous improvement efforts. Evaluation, conducted in collaboration with social scientists from the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods (CSRM), provided insights for refinement and future directions. ANU's ongoing commitment to community engagement, innovation, equity, and evaluation underscores its dedication to fostering safer and more inclusive campus environments. Purpose of review: Cardio-oncology is a subspecialty of medicine focused on minimizing the risk of cardiovascular (CV) toxicity in patients receiving potentially cardiotoxic cancer therapy. While the literature has previously focused on detection of CV toxicity, there has been growing interest in primary prevention strategies for cancer therapy-related cardiovascular toxicity (CTR-CVT). Recent findings: Several trials have investigated the role of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), and/or beta-blockers with mixed results, prompting researchers to assess alternatives, e.g., statins and sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i). In this review, we discuss the positive and negative clinical trial results relating to these two drug classes. Ongoing prevention-focused clinical trials include ARBs in combination with neprilysin inhibitors (ARNis), azeliragon, and ivabradine. Further research is needed to discern the true benefit of novel agents and, importantly, the specific populations that would derive the most benefit. Summary: In this review, we focus on results from recently reported studies exploring the potential benefit of pharmacologic approaches in primary prevention. There are currently no definitive signals strongly recommending a specific class of drugs for primary prevention in patients with cancer. Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) were responsible for 20.5 million annual deaths globally in 2021, with a disproportionally high burden in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). There is growing evidence of the use of citizen science and co-design approaches in developing interventions in different fields, but less so in the context of CVD prevention interventions in SSA. This paper reports on the collaborative multi-country project that employed citizen science and a co-design approach to (i) explore CVD risk perceptions, (ii) develop tailored prevention strategies, and (iii) support advocacy in different low-income settings in SSA. Methods: This is a participatory citizen science study with a co-design component. Data was collected from 205 participants aged 18 to 75 years in rural and urban communities in Malawi, Ethiopia and Rwanda, and urban South Africa. Fifty-one trained citizen scientists used a mobile app-based (EpiCollect) semi-structured survey questionnaire to collect data on CVD risk perceptions from participants purposively selected from two communities per country. Data collected per community included 100–150 photographs and 150–240 voice recordings on CVD risk perceptions, communication and health-seeking intentions. Thematic and comparative analysis were undertaken with the citizen scientists and the results were used to support citizen scientists-led stakeholder advocacy workshops. Findings are presented using bubble graphs based on weighted proportions of key risk factors indicated. Results: Nearly three in every five of the participants interviewed reported having a relative with CVD. The main perceived causes of CVD in all communities were substance use, food-related factors, and litter, followed by physical inactivity, emotional factors, poverty, crime, and violence. The perceived positive factors for cardiovascular health were nutrition, physical activity, green space, and clean/peaceful communities. Multi-level stakeholders (45–84 persons/country) including key decision makers participated in advocacy workshops and supported the identification and prioritization of community-specific CVD prevention strategies and implementation actions. Citizen science-informed CVD risk screening and referral to care interventions were piloted in six communities in three countries with about 4795 adults screened and those at risk referred for care. Health sector stakeholders indicated their support for utilising a citizen-engaged approach in national NCDs prevention programmes. The citizen scientists were excited by the opportunity to lead research and advocacy. Conclusion: The collaborative engagement, participatory learning, and co-designing activities enhanced active engagement between citizen scientists, researchers, and stakeholders. Background: In individuals with migraine, attacks may increase in frequency, severity, or both. Preventing migraine progression has emerged as a treatment goal in headache subspecialty practice, but there may be less awareness in general neurology or primary care settings where most people with migraine who seek treatment consult. Herein, we review the definition of and risk factors for migraine progression and consider strategies that could reduce its risk. Methods: A group of headache expert healthcare professionals, clinicians, and researchers reviewed published evidence documenting factors associated with increased or decreased rates of migraine progression and established expert opinions for disease management recommendations. Strength of evidence was rated as good, moderate, or based solely on expert opinion, using modified criteria for causation developed by AB Hill. Results: Migraine progression is commonly operationally defined as the transition from ≤ 15 to ≥ 15 monthly headache days among people with migraine; however, this does not necessarily constitute a fundamental change in migraine biology and other definitions should be considered. Established and theoretical key risk factors for migraine progression were categorized into five domains: migraine disease characteristics, treatment-related factors, comorbidities, lifestyle/exogenous factors, and demographic factors. Within these domains, good evidence supports the following risk factors: poorly optimized acute headache treatment, cutaneous allodynia, acute medication overuse, selected psychiatric symptoms, extra-cephalic chronic pain conditions, metabolism-related comorbidities, sleep disturbances, respiratory conditions, former/current high caffeine intake, physical inactivity, financial constraints, tobacco use, and personal triggers as risk factors. Protective actions that may mitigate migraine progression are sparsely investigated in published literature; our discussion of these factors is primarily based on expert opinion. Conclusions: Recognizing risk factors for migraine progression will allow healthcare providers to suggest protective actions against migraine progression (Supplementary Fig. 1). This article explores the multifaceted issues of occupational hazards in agriculture, focusing on common causes, circumstances of accidents, and preventive measures. Agriculture is recognized as one of the most hazardous industries, second only to construction. The study delves into the reasons for the high incidence of accidents, which include a tolerance for risky behaviors, poor engagement, lack of proper risk assessment, and inadequate safety regulations. By analyzing data from the International Labour Organization and other relevant sources, the research identifies the primary risks faced by agricultural workers, such as mechanical, chemical, biological hazards, and accidents involving animals and machinery. The findings highlight the necessity of comprehensive safety education, technological improvements, and legal regulations to mitigate these risks. Changes of intestinal microbiota have been shown to be involved in the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). We performed a meta-analysis to systematically evaluate the potential role of probiotics for the prevention of GDM. Systematic literature search was performed in electronic databases including PubMed, Cochrane library, Embase, Web of Science, Wanfang, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) to obtain relevant randomized controlled studies. A random-effects model was used to pool the results by incorporating the impact of the potential heterogeneity. Meta-regression and subgroup analyses were conducted to evaluate the source of heterogeneity. Fourteen studies involving 3527 pregnant women were included. Results showed that probiotics significantly reduced the incidence of GDM as compared to control (risk ratio [RR]: 0.71, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.52–0.96, P = 0.03) with significant heterogeneity (I2 = 73%). The meta-regression showed that body mass index (BMI) of females was positively associated with the RR for the effect of probiotics on GDM (coefficient = 0.084, P = 0.01). The results of subgroup analyses also suggested that probiotics significantly reduced the risk of GDM in women with BMI < 26 kg/m2, but not in those with BMI ≥ 26 kg/m2 (P for subgroup difference = 0.001). In addition, the preventative efficacy of probiotics on GDM was remarkable in women < 30 years, but not in those ≥ 30 years (P for subgroup difference < 0.001). In conclusion, probiotics may be effective in reducing the risk of GDM, particularly for females with lower BMI and younger age.

This mini-review analyzed two approaches to screening bacterial contamination and utilizing pathogen reduction technology (PRT) for Platelet concentrates (PCs). While the culture-based method is still considered the gold standard for detecting bacterial contamination in PCs, efforts in the past two decades to minimize transfusion-transmitted bacterial infections (TTBIs) have been insufficient to eliminate this infectious threat. PRTs have emerged as a crucial tool to enhance safety and mitigate these risks. The evidence suggests that the screening strategy for bacterial contamination is more successful in ensuring PC quality, decreasing the necessity for frequent transfusions, and improving resistance to platelet transfusion. Alternatively, the PRT approach is superior regarding PC safety. However, both methods are equally effective in managing bleeding. In conclusion, PRT can become a more prevalent means of safety for PCs compared to culture-based approaches and will soon comprehensively surpass culture-based bacterial contamination detection methods.
