Chemical pesticide delivery is a fundamental aspect of agriculture. However, the extensive use of pesticides severely endangers the ecosystem because they accumulate on crops, in soil, as well as in drinking and groundwater. New frontiers in nano-engineering have opened the door for precision agriculture. We introduced Tobacco mild green mosaic virus (TMGMV) as a viable delivery platform with a high aspect ratio and favorable soil mobility. In this work, we assess the use of TMGMV as a chemical nanocarrier for agriculturally relevant cargo. While plant viruses are usually portrayed as rigid/solid structures, these are "dynamic materials," and they "breathe" in solution in response to careful adjustment of pH or bathing media [e.g., addition of solvent such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)]. Through this process, coat proteins (CPs) partially dissociate leading to swelling of the nucleoprotein complexes-allowing for the infusion of active ingredients (AI), such as pesticides [e.g., fluopyram (FLP), clothianidin (CTD), rifampicin (RIF), and ivermectin (IVM)] into the macromolecular structure. We developed a "breathing" method that facilitates inter-coat protein cargo loading, resulting in up to  ~ 1000 AIs per virion. This is of significance since in the agricultural setting, there is a need to develop nanoparticle delivery strategies where the AI is not chemically altered, consequently avoiding the need for regulatory and registration processes of new compounds. This work highlights the potential of TMGMV as a pesticide nanocarrier in precision farming applications; the developed methods likely would be applicable to other protein-based nanoparticle systems.

Sustainable farming practices aim to produce agricultural products at a low environmental cost, ensuring food availability for future generations. These approaches combine the production of agricultural crops and livestock for site-specific uses, with an emphasis on long-term objectives including satisfying the food supply worldwide, improving the environment, making the most efficient use of resources and boosting the welfare of farmers and society as a whole. Sustainability in farming is mostly dependent on soil health, which is the soil's capacity to function within ecological and land-use boundaries. It enhances general wellness, maintains the purity of the air and water, and supports biological productivity. The depletion of soil functions brought about by modern agricultural intensification has an impact on ecosystem services and long-term productivity. The goal of sustainable farming is to raise fertility and organic matter in the soil. Key practices include carbon farming, conservation agriculture, integrated pest management (IPM), and precision farming. In order to support sustainable crop production, these techniques improve soil fertility, structure, and biodiversity. Precision weed management (PWM), driven by machine vision and deep learning (DL) advancements, not only enhances agricultural product quality and optimizes crop yield but also provides a sustainable alternative to herbicide use. However, existing DL-based algorithms on weed detection are mainly developed based on supervised learning approaches, typically demanding large-scale datasets with manual-labeled annotations, which can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. As such, label-efficient learning methods, especially semi-supervised learning, have gained increased attention in the broader domain of computer vision and have demonstrated promising performance. These methods aim to utilize a small number of labeled data samples along with a great number of unlabeled samples to develop high-performing models comparable to the supervised learning counterpart trained on a large amount of labeled data samples. In this study, we assess the effectiveness of a semi-supervised learning framework for multiclass weed detection, employing two well-known object detection frameworks, namely FCOS (Fully Convolutional One-Stage Object Detection) and FasterRCNN (Faster Region-based Convolutional Networks). Specifically, we evaluate a generalized student-teacher framework with an improved pseudo-label generation module to produce reliable pseudo-labels for the unlabeled data. To enhance generalization, an ensemble student network is employed to facilitate the training process. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is able to achieve approximately 76% and 96% detection accuracy as the supervised methods with only 10% of labeled data in CottonWeedDet3 and CottonWeedDet12, respectively. The present study focuses on the effects of vermicomposting on various soil properties, particularly emphasizing the dielectric characteristics of soil. Vermicomposting is known to significantly enhance soil fertility and improve its physical aspects such as aeration, porosity and water retention. In this analysis, a modified probe arrangement has been employed to determine how varying levels of vermicompost influence the soil's dielectric properties within the radio and microwave spectrum (10 MHz-14 GHz). A modified Dak-12 open-ended coaxial probe, paired with a vector network analyzer, was utilized for this purpose to overcome the drawbacks of standard arrangement. The results show that vermicompost strongly affects the soil's physical attributes (pH, bulk density, porosity) and also its chemical properties, along with its dielectric behavior. The study further explored the role of different factors such as the concentration of vermicompost, frequency and temperature on soil's dielectric response. To accurately and swiftly gauge these effects, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) has been employed to predict the dielectric properties (ε' and ε") of the soil. The high precision of these models, with R2 values of 0.9729 for ε' and 0.9487 for ε", underscores their effectiveness in evaluating the impact of vermicompost on various soil properties. Although there are acceptable infrastructures for precision agriculture in Iran, its adoption always has faced challenges and obstacles. A review of previous literature showed the issue of acceptance of these technologies not only in Iran but also in other overseas research has been studied in a one-dimensional and superficial manner. Therefore, the current study aims to analyze the issue of attitude to use one of the most important and practical technologies of precision agriculture, i.e. UAV, from a new perspective and using the PNTC-AUTAUT model. For this purpose, descriptive cross-sectional survey method was used. The statistical population was the potato farmers of Kermanshah city (N=596), according to Morgan's table, 234 of them were studied using systematic random sampling. The data was collected using a researcher-made questionnaire. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were confirmed by a panel of experts and Cronbach's alpha test, AVE, and CR, respectively. The results of structural equation modeling showed that except for the factors: of community influence and perceived need, all the items raised in the model have a significant effect on the intention to use UAV technology. In this regard, the variables of perceived risks and perceived benefits of using technology with values of 0.248 and 0.244 have the greatest effect on the intention to use drone technology. Also, the mediating variable of required technical specifications has the greatest effect on the attitude to use drone technology. Based on the extracted results, it is suggested that by providing a suitable platform such as favorable investment, training of farmers, and promoting experts in the field of agriculture, the path forward to the use of new technologies, especially drone technology, can be shortened. Precision agriculture uses data gathered from various sources to improve agricultural yields and the effectiveness of crop management techniques like fertiliser application, irrigation management, and pesticide application. Reduced usage of agrochemicals is a key step towards more sustainable agriculture. Weed management robots which can perform tasks like selective sprinkling or mechanical weed elimination, contribute to this objective. A trustworthy crop/weed classification system that can accurately recognise and classify crops and weeds is required for these robots to function. In this paper, we explore various deep learning models for achieving reliable segmentation results in less training time. We classify every pixel of the images into different categories using semantic segmentation models. The models are based on an encoder-decoder architecture, where feature maps are extracted during encoding and spatial information is recovered during decoding. We examine the segmentation output on a beans dataset containing different weeds, which were collected under highly distinct environmental conditions, including cloudy, rainy, dawn, evening, full sun, and shadow. Precision agriculture involves extensive agricultural landscapes with varying terrains and crop types. An energy-efficient routing protocol ensures that data is efficiently transmitted across the entire agricultural area. However, the ability of clustering routing protocol is based on the cluster formation as well as cluster head selection processes. Traditional methods are impractical for such large-scale deployments. In order to conquer the above-mentioned challenges, this paper proposed a novel Ensemble Fuzzy Crossover based Golden Jackal (EFC-GJ) method for enhancing the formation of cluster and cluster heads selection. In the proposed method, the crossover-based Golden Jackal Optimization, Fuzzy c-means Clustering Method, and Ensemble Q-learning are utilized for cluster center initialization, cluster formation, and cluster head selection respectively. The performance evaluation measures such as throughput, jitter, latency, energy consumption, and network lifetime are utilized for the evaluation of the proposed EFC-GJ method and these results are compared with existing methods. The EFC-GJ method attained a PDR of 0.98, throughput of 0.97 Mbps, end-to-end delay of 1.3 s, network lifetime of 5620 rounds, energy consumption of 0.2 mJ, jitter of 0.36 ms, and latency of 1.7 s. To meet the grand challenges of agricultural production including climate change impacts on crop production, a tight integration of social science, technology and agriculture experts including farmers are needed. Rapid advances in information and communication technology, precision agriculture and data analytics, are creating a perfect opportunity for the creation of smart connected farms (SCFs) and networked farmers. A network and coordinated farmer network provides unique advantages to farmers to enhance farm production and profitability, while tackling adverse climate events. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in SCF including the advances in engineering, computer sciences, data sciences, social sciences and economics including data privacy, sharing and technology adoption. More specifically, we provide a comprehensive review of key components of SCFs and crucial elements necessary for its success. It includes, high-speed connections, sensors for data collection, and edge, fog and cloud computing along with innovative wireless technologies to enable cyber agricultural system. We also cover the topic of adoption of these technologies that involves important considerations around data analysis, privacy, and the sharing of data on platforms. From a social science and economics perspective, we examine the net-benefits and potential barriers to data-sharing within agricultural communities, and the behavioral factors influencing the adoption of SCF technologies. The focus of this review is to cover the state-of-the-art in smart connected farms with sufficient technological infrastructure; however, the information included herein can be utilized in geographies and farming systems that are witnessing digital technologies and want to develop SCF. Precision agriculture has revolutionized crop management and agricultural production, with LiDAR technology attracting significant interest among various technological advancements. This extensive review examines the various applications of LiDAR in precision agriculture, with a particular emphasis on its function in crop cultivation and harvests. The introduction provides an overview of precision agriculture, highlighting the need for effective agricultural management and the growing significance of LiDAR technology. The prospective advantages of LiDAR for increasing productivity, optimizing resource utilization, managing crop diseases and pesticides, and reducing environmental impact are discussed. The introduction comprehensively covers LiDAR technology in precision agriculture, detailing airborne, terrestrial, and mobile systems along with their specialized applications in the field. After that, the paper reviews the several uses of LiDAR in agricultural cultivation, including crop growth and yield estimate, disease detection, weed control, and plant health evaluation. The use of LiDAR for soil analysis and management, including soil mapping and categorization and the measurement of moisture content and nutrient levels, is reviewed. Additionally, the article examines how LiDAR is used for harvesting crops, including its use in autonomous harvesting systems, post-harvest quality evaluation, and the prediction of crop maturity and yield. Future perspectives, emergent trends, and innovative developments in LiDAR technology for precision agriculture are discussed, along with the critical challenges and research gaps that must be filled. The review concludes by emphasizing potential solutions and future directions for maximizing LiDAR's potential in precision agriculture. This in-depth review of the uses of LiDAR gives helpful insights for academics, practitioners, and stakeholders interested in using this technology for effective and environmentally friendly crop management, which will eventually contribute to the development of precision agricultural methods. (1) Background: Yield-monitoring systems are widely used in grain crops but are less advanced for hay and forage. Current commercial systems are generally limited to weighing individual bales, limiting the spatial resolution of maps of hay yield. This study evaluated an Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based imaging system to estimate hay yield. (2) Methods: Data were collected from three 0.4 ha plots and a 35 ha hay field of red clover and timothy grass in September 2020. A multispectral camera on the UAV captured images at 30 m (20 mm pixel−1) and 50 m (35 mm pixel−1) heights. Eleven Vegetation Indices (VIs) and five texture features were calculated from the images to estimate biomass yield. Multivariate regression models (VIs and texture features vs. biomass) were evaluated. (3) Results: Model R2 values ranged from 0.31 to 0.68. (4) Conclusions: Despite strong correlations between standard VIs and biomass, challenges such as variable image resolution and clarity affected accuracy. Winter is the season of main concern for beekeepers since the temperature, humidity, and potential infection from mites and other diseases may lead the colony to death. As a consequence, beekeepers perform invasive checks on the colonies, exposing them to further harm. This paper proposes a novel design of an instrumented beehive involving color cameras placed inside the beehive and at the bottom of it, paving the way for new frontiers in beehive monitoring. The overall acquisition system is described focusing on design choices towards an effective solution for internal, contactless, and stress-free beehive monitoring. To validate our approach, we conducted an experimental campaign in 2023 and analyzed the collected images with YOLOv8 to understand if the proposed solution can be useful for beekeepers and what kind of information can be derived from this kind of monitoring, including the presence of Varroa destructor mites inside the beehive. We experimentally found that the observation point inside the beehive is the most challenging due to the frequent movements of the bees and the difficulties related to obtaining in-focus images. However, from these images, it is possible to find Varroa destructor mites. On the other hand, the observation point at the bottom of the beehive showed great potential for understanding the overall activity of the colony. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent advancements in high-throughput phenotyping have led to the use of drones with RGB sensors for evaluating plant traits. This study explored the relationships between vegetation indices (VIs) with grain yield and morphoagronomic and physiological traits in maize genotypes. Eight maize hybrids, including those from the UENF breeding program and commercial varieties, were evaluated using a randomized block design with four replications. VIs were obtained at various stages using drones and Pix4D Mapper 4.7.5 software. Analysis revealed significant differences in morphoagronomic traits and photosynthetic capacity. At 119 days after planting (DAP), the RGB vegetation index VARI showed a significant correlation (r = 0.99) with grain yield. VARI also correlated with female flowering (r = −0.87), plant height (r = −0.79), 100-grain weight (r = −0.77), and anthocyanin concentration (r = −0.86). PCA showed a clear separation between local and commercial hybrids, explaining 46.7% of variance at 91 DAP, 52.3% at 98 DAP, 64.2% at 112 DAP, and 66.1% at 119 DAP. Chlorophyll (Chl) concentration is one of the factors that affects crop productivity. This study investigated the prediction of chlorophyll concentrations in Mombaça grass' leaves using hyperspectral data and machine learning techniques. Chlorophyll variations were induced by different levels of nitrogen fertilization (104, 208, 312, and 416 kg ha−1). Spectral signatures (400–2500 nm) and chlorophyll contents of the leaves were obtained in October, November, and December 2017, and January 2018. Models were generated using Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR), Random Forest (RF), and Support Vector Regression (SVR). Two validation techniques were employed: holdout, dividing the data into training (75%) and testing (25%) sets; and leave‐one‐date‐out cross‐validation (LOOCV), in which one date was omitted during model training and used to predict the omitted date's value. Chlorophyll concentrations varied according to N doses, with the highest concentrations observed in October and December. In these months, there were greater variations in spectral reflectance in the green and red bands (530–680 nm). December was identified as the ideal period for chlorophyll quantification, for both holdout and LOOCV validation techniques. The SVR technique performed best (R2 = 0.71, RMSE = 0.23 mg g−1, dr = 0.72) compared to RF (R2 = 0.63, RMSE = 0.27 mg g−1, dr = 0.66) and PLSR (R2 = 0.60, RMSE = 0.27 mg g−1, dr = 0.67). Therefore, the prediction of chlorophyll in Mombaça grass using spectroradiometry is promising and applicable across different cultivation periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Indoor hydroponic farming is an advanced cultivation technique with diverse sustainability benefits, such as facilitating local produce, minimizing transportation costs and emissions, and enabling year-round crop cultivation. To optimize crop growth for enhanced yield, improved crop quality, and reduced environmental footprint, precise monitoring and replenishment of essential nutrients within hydroponic systems is crucial. Current methods employed in most commercial farms for online nutrient supply monitoring is limited to pH and conductivity measurements. These techniques can only offer an indication of the overall change in the complex nutrient mixture and lack the capability to precisely identify the specific nutrient or quantify the nutrient content. Most of the existing techniques for measuring individual nutrient levels are expensive and invasive, necessitating sample preparation, frequent recalibration, and skilled personnel for operation. In this context, we propose and demonstrate a real-time, on-site monitoring system for the precise analysis of hydroponic nutrient supply based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). We also discuss the system design considerations, parametric optimizations, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of key nutrient components such as potassium (K), sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg), using the proposed approach. The detection range of the developed LIBS-based monitoring system can encompass the typical concentration range observed in hydroponic nutrient solutions used at agricultural farms. This technique offers rapid online monitoring of individual nutrient components, providing precise, real-time analysis and the potential to enable comprehensive automation capabilities for current and future hydroponic farms. In both plant breeding and crop management, interpretability plays a crucial role in instilling trust in AI-driven approaches and enabling the provision of actionable insights. The primary objective of this research is to explore and evaluate the potential contributions of deep learning network architectures that employ stacked LSTM for end-of-season maize grain yield prediction. A secondary aim is to expand the capabilities of these networks by adapting them to better accommodate and leverage the multi-modality properties of remote sensing data. In this study, a multi-modal deep learning architecture that assimilates inputs from heterogeneous data streams, including high-resolution hyperspectral imagery, LiDAR point clouds, and environmental data, is proposed to forecast maize crop yields. The architecture includes attention mechanisms that assign varying levels of importance to different modalities and temporal features that, reflect the dynamics of plant growth and environmental interactions. The interpretability of the attention weights is investigated in multi-modal networks that seek to both improve predictions and attribute crop yield outcomes to genetic and environmental variables. This approach also contributes to increased interpretability of the model's predictions. The temporal attention weight distributions highlighted relevant factors and critical growth stages that contribute to the predictions. The results of this study affirm that the attention weights are consistent with recognized biological growth stages, thereby substantiating the network's capability to learn biologically interpretable features. Accuracies of the model's predictions of yield ranged from 0.82-0.93 R2 ref in this genetics-focused study, further highlighting the potential of attention-based models. Further, this research facilitates understanding of how multi-modality remote sensing aligns with the physiological stages of maize. The proposed architecture shows promise in improving predictions and offering interpretable insights into the factors affecting maize crop yields, while demonstrating the impact of data collection by different modalities through the growing season. By identifying relevant factors and critical growth stages, the model's attention weights provide valuable information that can be used in both plant breeding and crop management. The consistency of attention weights with biological growth stages reinforces the potential of deep learning networks in agricultural applications, particularly in leveraging remote sensing data for yield prediction. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that investigates the use of hyperspectral and LiDAR UAV time series data for explaining/interpreting plant growth stages within deep learning networks and forecasting plot-level maize grain yield using late fusion modalities with attention mechanisms. Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) by symbiotic bacteria plays a vital role in sustainable agriculture. However, current quantification methods are often expensive and impractical. This study explores the potential of Raman spectroscopy, a non-invasive technique, for rapid assessment of BNF activity in soybeans. Raman spectra were obtained from soybean plants grown with and without rhizobia bacteria to identify spectral signatures associated with BNF. δN15 isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) was used to determine actual BNF percentages. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was employed to develop a model for BNF quantification based on Raman spectra. The model explained 80% of the variation in BNF activity. To enhance the model's specificity for BNF detection regardless of nitrogen availability, a subsequent elastic net (Enet) regularisation strategy was implemented. In strawberry cultivation, precise disease management is crucial for maximizing yields and reducing unnecessary fungicide use. Traditional methods for measuring leaf wetness duration (LWD), a critical factor in assessing the risk of fungal diseases such as botrytis fruit rot and anthracnose, have been reliant on sensors with known limitations in accuracy and reliability and difficulties with calibrating. To overcome these limitations, this study introduced an innovative algorithm for leaf wetness detection systems employing high-resolution imaging and deep learning technologies, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Implemented at the University of Florida's Plant Science Research and Education Unit (PSREU) in Citra, FL, USA, and expanded to three additional locations across Florida, USA, the system captured and analyzed images of a reference plate to accurately determine the wetness and, consequently, the LWD. The comparison of system outputs with manual observations across diverse environmental conditions demonstrated the enhanced accuracy and reliability of the artificial intelligence-driven approach. By integrating this system into the Strawberry Advisory System (SAS), this study provided an efficient solution to improve disease risk assessment and fungicide application strategies, promising significant economic benefits and sustainability advances in strawberry production. To optimize growth and management, precision agriculture relies on a deep understanding of agricultural dynamics, particularly crop water status analysis. Leveraging unmanned aerial vehicles, we can efficiently acquire high-resolution spatiotemporal samples by utilizing remote sensors. However, non-linear relationships among data features, localized within specific subgroups, frequently emerge in agricultural data. Interpreting these complex patterns requires sophisticated analysis due to the presence of noise, high variability, and non-stationarity behavior in the collected samples. Here, we introduce Local Biplot, a methodological framework tailored for discerning meaningful data patterns in non-stationary contexts for precision agriculture. Local Biplot relies on the well-known uniform manifold approximation and projection method, such as UMAP, and local affine transformations to codify non-stationary and non-linear data patterns while maintaining interpretability. This lets us find important clusters for transformation and projection within a single global axis pair. Hence, our framework encompasses variable and observational contributions within individual clusters. At the same time, we provide a relevance analysis strategy to help explain why those clusters exist, facilitating the understanding of data dynamics while favoring interpretability. We demonstrated our method's capabilities through experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets, covering scenarios involving grass and rice crops. Moreover, we use random forest and linear regression models to predict water status variables from our Local Biplot-based feature ranking and clusters. Our findings revealed enhanced clustering and prediction capability while emphasizing the importance of input features in precision agriculture. As a result, Local Biplot is a useful tool to visualize, analyze, and compare the intricate underlying patterns and internal structures of complex agricultural datasets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water stress on crops can severely disrupt crop growth and reduce yields, requiring the accurate and prompt diagnosis of crop water stress, especially in semiarid regions. Infrared thermal imaging cameras are effective tools to monitor the spatial distribution of canopy temperature (Tc), which is the basis of the daily water stress index (DWSI) calculation. This research aimed to evaluate the variability of plant water stress under different soil cover conditions through geostatistical techniques, using detailed thermographic images of Neem canopies in the Brazilian northeastern semiarid region. Two experimental plots were established with Neem cropped under mulch and bare soil conditions. Thermal images of the leaves were taken with a portable thermographic camera and processed using Python language and the OpenCV database. The application of the geostatistical technique enabled stress indicator mapping at the leaf scale, with the spherical and exponential models providing the best fit for both soil cover conditions. The results showed that the highest levels of water stress were observed during the months with the highest air temperatures and no rainfall, especially at the apex of the leaf and close to the central veins, due to a negative water balance. Even under extreme drought conditions, mulching reduced Neem physiological water stress, leading to lower plant water stress, associated with a higher soil moisture content and a negative skewness of temperature distribution. Regarding the mapping of the stress index, the sequential Gaussian simulation method reduced the temperature uncertainty and the variation on the leaf surface. Our findings highlight that mapping the Water Stress Index offers a robust framework to precisely detect stress for agricultural management, as well as soil cover management in semiarid regions. These findings underscore the impact of meteorological and planting conditions on leaf temperature and baseline water stress, which can be valuable for regional water resource managers in diagnosing crop water status more accurately. A precision agriculture approach that uses drones for crop protection and variable rate application has become the main method of rice weed control, but it suffers from excessive spraying issues, which can pollute soil and water environments and harm ecosystems. This study proposes a method to generate variable spray prescription maps based on the actual distribution of weeds in rice fields and utilize DJI plant protection UAVs to perform automatic variable spraying operations according to the prescription maps, achieving precise pesticide application. We first construct the YOLOv8n DT model by transferring the "knowledge features" learned by the larger YOLOv8l model with strong feature extraction capabilities to the smaller YOLOv8n model through knowledge distillation. We use this model to identify weeds in the field and generate an actual distribution map of rice field weeds based on the recognition results. The number of weeds in each experimental plot is counted, and the specific amount of pesticide for each plot is determined based on the amount of weeds and the spraying strategy proposed in this study. Variable spray prescription maps are then generated accordingly. DJI plant protection UAVs are used to perform automatic variable spraying operations based on prescription maps. Water-sensitive papers are used to collect droplets during the automatic variable operation process of UAVs, and the variable spraying effect is evaluated through droplet analysis. YOLOv8n-DT improved the accuracy of the model by 3.1% while keeping the model parameters constant, and the accuracy of identifying weeds in rice fields reached 0.82, which is close to the accuracy of the teacher network. Compared to the traditional extensive spraying method, the approach in this study saves approximately 15.28% of herbicides. Beans are the main direct source of protein consumed by humans in the world and their productivity is directly linked to nitrogen. The short crop cycle imposes the need for fast methodologies for N quantification. In this work, we evaluated the performance of four machine learning algorithms in nitrogen estimation using NIR spectroscopy, comparing predictions between complete spectral data and only intervals obtained with the variable importance in projection (VIP). Doses of 0, 50, 100, and 150 kg ha−1 of N were applied and leaf reflectance was collected. Weka software was used to test the algorithms. The selection of the most effective spectral zones was made with the variable importance in projection (VIP). The intervals of 700–740 nm and 983–995 nm were considered the most important for the study of nitrogen. More efficient predictions were verified for RF and KNN models (R2 = 0.89, RMSE = 2.23 g kg−1; and R2 = 0.80, RMSE = 2.89 g kg−1, respectively) when only the most important spectral regions were included. Precision agriculture technologies (PATs) are believed to be able to ensure the sustainability of rice production. However, the adoption of PATs in developing countries is much lower than in developed countries. The basic question of our research is how Indonesian rice farmers are ready to adopt precision agriculture since they are smallholder farmers. Data was collected from 521 rice farmers in five Indonesian provinces, i.e. North Sumatra, West Java, Yogyakarta, South Sulawesi, and East Nusa Tenggara, in 2023. Farmers were interviewed face to face using structured questionnaires. The data were analysed using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) through the Python software. The results showed that Indonesian rice farmers have a moderate level of readiness. The mean value of the capabilities and opportunities indicators were 2.54 to 3.8, while the range for the opportunity's indicator is 3.23 to 4.11, larger than the capabilities indicators. The level of precision agriculture implementation on Indonesian rice farmers was significant influenced by management (β = 0.42, t = 7.11, p < 0.05), environment (β = 0.17, t = 3.63, p < 0.05), readiness (β = 0.14, t = 2.51, p < 0.05), and technology (β = 0.10, t = 2.12, p < 0.05), economy (β = 0.09, t = 3.63, p < 0.05), and technology2 (β = -0.072, t = 3.5, p < 0.05). Meanwhile, farmer readiness was significantly influenced by opportunity (β = 0.39, t = 6.64, p < 0.05) and capabilities (β = 0.43, t = 6.82, p < 0.05). This research provides information on the status of human resource capacity in exploiting opportunities for implementing precision agriculture and technical policy advice. The Indonesian government should improve farmers' skills in information technology, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and sensor technology in agricultural sectors, and facilitate access to technology and resources in order to increase rice farmers' readiness to adopt PATs. Purpose: Understanding spatial and temporal variability of absolute and relative profit within fields provides a basis for site-specific management of limited agricultural inputs such as water. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the pattern of spatial and temporal variation of cotton profitability and to assess the stability of profit in management zones (MZs) created based on soil properties and topography. Methods: This study analyzed profitability patterns in eight commercially managed fields in the Southern High Plains from 2000 to 2003. Each field was divided into 30 m grids and soil physical properties, topography, and lint yield were collected for each grid. Based on the input cost and output prices, profit was also calculated for each grid. Clusters or MZs based on soil and topographic properties were created for each field using the partitioning around medoids (PAM) clustering algorithm. ANOVA and Least Significant Difference tests were conducted to determine the difference in profit among the clusters over multiple years. Results: In four of the eight fields, the spatial pattern of profit was consistent across multiple years, indicating the potential of using MZs for site-specific input management. For the rest of the fields, the profit pattern in clusters was inconsistent across multiple years, indicating the need for within-season dynamic MZs. Conclusion: The variability in soil and topographic properties influenced the profitability of management zones within a field across multiple years. Hence, this study indicates that understanding the variability in profit patterns in management zones can help to determine the best strategy for field-specific and year-specific precision input management. The success of weed control is critical for our food security. Non-chemical weed control is a promising technique in sustainable agriculture to ensure the food security. In this review, multiple directed energy weed control methods are reviewed with a specific focus on laser and optical radiation weed control. The mechanisms of the weed control in terms of adverse ablation, radiation thermal effects, and molecular-level damages are systematically reviewed. In particular, the underlying mathematical models determining the dose and response relationship of the weed control are also analyzed for a rigorous study of the physical law of the control process. Recognition of the importance of soil moisture information to the optimisation of water-limited dryland cereal production has led to Australian growers being encouraged to make use of soil moisture sensors. However, irrespective of the merits of different sensing technologies, only a small soil volume is sensed, raising questions as to the utility of such sensors in broadacre cropping, especially given spatial variability in soil water holding capacity. Here, using data collected from contrasting sites in South Australia and Western Australia over two seasons, during which either wheat or barley were grown, we describe a method for extrapolating soil moisture information away from the location of a probe using freely-available NDVI time series and weather data as covariates. Relationships between soil moisture probe data, cumulative NDVI (ΣNDVI), cumulative net precipitation (ΣNP) and seasonal growing degree days (GDD) were significant (P < 0.0001). In turn, these could be used to predict soil moisture status for any location within a field on any date following crop emergence. However, differences in ΣNDVI between different within-field zones did not fully explain differences in the soil moisture from multiple sensors located in these zones, resulting in different calibrations being required for each sensor or zone and a relatively low accuracy of prediction of measured soil moisture (R2adj ~ 0.4–0.7) which may not be sufficient to support targeted agronomic decision-making. The results also suggest that at any location within a field, the range of variation in soil moisture status down the soil profile on any given date will present as greater than the spatial variation in soil moisture across the field on that date. Accordingly, we conclude that, in dryland cereal cropping, the major value in soil moisture sensors arises from an enhanced ability to compare seasons and to relate similarities and differences between seasons as a guide to decision-making. Leaf area index (LAI) is a vital input variable for crop growth and yield prediction models. Therefore, rapid and accurate crop LAI estimates can offer important information for monitoring and managing the quantity and quality of food production. Here, LAI values of maize and soybean were predicted applying height metrics and intensity metrics calculated through unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) LiDAR data. Moreover, we compared the prediction performance of physical model with that of empirical model for estimating crop LAI. The physical model based on Beer–Lambert law yielded reliable estimation results using LiDAR height data (maize: R2 = 0.815, RMSE = 0.385; soybean: R2 = 0.627, RMSE = 0.515) and LiDAR intensity data (maize: R2 = 0.719, RMSE = 0.474; soybean: R2 = 0.548, RMSE = 0.567). However, the linear regression model obtained a higher estimation accuracy. The single linear regression model derived from LiDAR height data had an R2 value of 0.837 (RMSE = 0.361) for maize and 0.658 (RMSE = 0.493) for soybean, and derived from LiDAR intensity data had an R2 value of 0.749 (RMSE = 0.448) for maize and 0.460 (RMSE = 0.619) for soybean, respectively. We found that the random forest (RF) regression model yielded the lowest estimation accuracy in this study. Moreover, the RF regression model in our study was not able to reliably estimate soybean LAI whether using LiDAR height metrics (R2 = 0.294) or intensity metrics (R2 = 0.180). Our results show that both LiDAR intensity and height metrics are capable of reliably predicting maize and soybean LAIs, although LiDAR intensity data yielded lower estimation accuracy than LiDAR height data. Disease and nutrient deficiency disorders significantly impact the productivity of rice crops. Timely identification of these conditions is essential for effective mitigation of potential crop damage. To address this challenge, considerable research is happening in the field of rice crop monitoring and maintenance, using cutting-edge techniques like Machine learning (ML)/Deep learning (DL). This study aims to address critical aspects of the research landscape, including publication trends, data modalities, ML/DL models, pre-processing methods, segmentation techniques, and feature selection approaches in the context of rice crop's health. By presenting both research findings and existing gaps, this systematic literature review (SLR) offers valuable insights to direct future research endeavours in this domain. Our investigation involves a comprehensive review of articles sourced from Scopus, IEEE Xplore, Science Direct and Google Scholar resulting in a dataset of 91 unique articles spanning from the year 2013–2023. Following rigorous selection criteria, these 91 articles have been considered for in-depth analysis. Through an extensive examination of this corpus, our study seeks to provide answers to seven key questions pertaining to the past, present, and future directions of research of ML/DL application in rice crop health monitoring and disease/disorder diagnosis. Sustainable agriculture is crucial for achieving SDG2 and building a resilient climate-food system. This study provides a nuanced understanding of factors that influence the adoption of precision agriculture technology by Vietnamese smallholder rice farmers as a sustainable agricultural solution. The study's objectives are: (1) to provide a nuanced understanding of factors that influence adoption of precision agriculture technology by Vietnamese smallholder rice farmers; and (2) to identify factors associated with agricultural practice in Vietnam that may impact the adoption of precision agriculture technology. The study conducted 35 semi-structured interviews with smallholder rice farmers and agriculture experts. Data were analyzed using iterative thematic analysis. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model was used for empirical analysis. The UTAUT constructs of Performance expectancy, Effort expectancy, Government support, and Social influence were found to be determinants of adoption. Trialability and Observability impact Effort expectancy and Performance expectancy. We also discovered that the performance of agricultural cooperatives and support of lead firms play a crucial role in facilitating agricultural technology adoption by Vietnamese smallholder rice farmers. The results confirm the applicability of UTAUT in defining smallholders' behavioural intention and predicting agricultural technology adoption. This study focuses on semantic segmentation in crop Opuntia spp. orthomosaics; this is a significant challenge due to the inherent variability in the captured images. Manual measurement of Opuntia spp. vegetation areas can be slow and inefficient, highlighting the need for more advanced and accurate methods. For this reason, we propose to use deep learning techniques to provide a more precise and efficient measurement of the vegetation area. Our research focuses on the unique difficulties posed by segmenting high-resolution images exceeding 2000 pixels, a common problem in generating orthomosaics for agricultural monitoring. The research was carried out on a Opuntia spp. cultivation located in the agricultural region of Tulancingo, Hidalgo, Mexico. The images used in this study were obtained by drones and processed using advanced semantic segmentation architectures, including DeepLabV3+, UNet, and UNet Style Xception. The results offer a comparative analysis of the performance of these architectures in the semantic segmentation of Opuntia spp., thus contributing to the development and improvement of crop analysis techniques based on deep learning. The health monitoring of vegetable and fruit plants, especially during the critical seedling growth stage, is essential to protect them from various environmental stresses and prevent yield loss. Different environmental stresses may cause similar symptoms, making visual inspection alone unreliable and potentially leading to an incorrect diagnosis and delayed corrective actions. This study aimed to address these challenges by proposing a segmented regression model and a Mask R-CNN model for detecting the initiation time and symptoms of nutrient stress in cucumber seedlings within a controlled environment. Nutrient stress was induced by applying two different treatments: an indicative nutrient deficiency with an electrical conductivity (EC) of 0 dSm−1, and excess nutrients with a high-concentration nutrient solution and an EC of 6 dSm−1. Images of the seedlings were collected using an automatic image acquisition system two weeks after germination. The early initiation of nutrient stress was detected using a segmented regression analysis, which analyzed morphological and textural features extracted from the images. For the Mask R-CNN model, 800 seedling images were annotated based on the segmented regression analysis results. Nutrient-stressed seedlings were identified from the initiation day to 4.2 days after treatment application. The Mask R-CNN model, implemented using ResNet-101 for feature extraction, leveraged transfer learning to train the network with a smaller dataset, thereby reducing the processing time. This study identifies the top projected canopy area (TPCA), energy, entropy, and homogeneity as prospective indicators of nutritional deficits in cucumber seedlings. The results from the Mask R-CNN model are promising, with the best-fit image achieving an F1 score of 93.4%, a precision of 93%, and a recall of 94%. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the integrated statistical and machine learning (ML) methods for the early and accurate diagnosis of nutrient stress. The use of segmented regression for initial detection, followed by the Mask R-CNN for precise identification, emphasizes the potential of this approach to enhance agricultural practices. By facilitating the early detection and accurate diagnosis of nutrient stress, this approach allows for quicker and more precise treatments, which improve crop health and productivity. With the global population growth and increasing food demand, the development of precision agriculture has become particularly critical. In precision agriculture, accurately identifying areas of nitrogen stress in crops and planning precise fertilization paths are crucial. However, traditional coverage path-planning (CPP) typically considers only single-area tasks and overlooks the multi-area tasks CPP. To address this problem, this study proposed a Regional Framework for Coverage Path-Planning for Precision Fertilization (RFCPPF) for crop protection UAVs in multi-area tasks. This framework includes three modules: nitrogen stress spatial distribution extraction, multi-area tasks environmental map construction, and coverage path-planning. Firstly, Sentinel-2 remote-sensing images are processed using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, and the Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI) is calculated to extract the spatial distribution of nitrogen stress. A multi-area tasks environmental map is constructed to guide multiple UAV agents. Subsequently, improvements based on the Double Deep Q Network (DDQN) are introduced, incorporating Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and dueling network structures. Additionally, a multi-objective reward function and a state and action selection strategy suitable for stress area plant protection operations are designed. Simulation experiments verify the superiority of the proposed method in reducing redundant paths and improving coverage efficiency. The proposed improved DDQN achieved an overall step count that is 60.71% of MLP-DDQN and 90.55% of Breadth-First Search–Boustrophedon Algorithm (BFS-BA). Today, crop suggestions and necessary guidance have become a regular need for a farmer. Farmers generally depend on their local agriculture officers regarding this, and it may be difficult to obtain the right guidance at the right time. Nowadays, crop datasets are available on different websites in the agriculture sector, and they play a crucial role in suggesting suitable crops. So, a decision support system that analyzes the crop dataset using machine learning techniques can assist farmers in making better choices regarding crop selections. The main objective of this research is to provide quick guidance to farmers with more accurate and effective crop recommendations by utilizing machine learning methods, global positioning system coordinates, and crop cloud data. Here, the recommendation can be more personalized, which enables the farmers to predict crops in their specific geographical context, taking into account factors like climate, soil composition, water availability, and local conditions. In this regard, an existing historical crop dataset that contains the state, district, year, area-wise production rate, crop name, and season was collected for 246,091 sample records from the Dataworld website, which holds data on 37 different crops from different areas of India. Also, for better analysis, a dataset was collected from the agriculture offices of the Rayagada, Koraput, and Gajapati districts in Odisha state, India. Both of these datasets were combined and stored using a Firebase cloud service. Thirteen different machine learning algorithms have been applied to the dataset to identify dependencies within the data. To facilitate this process, an Android application was developed using Android Studio (Electric Eel | 2023.1.1) Emulator (Version 32.1.14), Software Development Kit (SDK, Android SDK 33), and Tools. A model has been proposed that implements the SMOTE (Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique) to balance the dataset, and then it allows for the implementation of 13 different classifiers, such as logistic regression, decision tree (DT), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), SVC (Support Vector Classifier), random forest (RF), Gradient Boost (GB), Bagged Tree, extreme gradient boosting (XGB classifier), Ada Boost Classifier, Cat Boost, HGB (Histogram-based Gradient Boosting), SGDC (Stochastic Gradient Descent), and MNB (Multinomial Naive Bayes) on the cloud dataset. It is observed that the performance of the SGDC method is 1.00 in accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and ROC AUC (Receiver Operating Characteristics–Area Under the Curve) and is 0.91 in sensitivity and 0.54 in specificity after applying the SMOTE. This study provides a comprehensive review and analysis of the current status of AM technology applied in the five main agricultural manufacturing aspects such as the application of AM technology in the manufacturing of agricultural equipment parts, its use in agricultural sensors, its role in the utilization of agricultural waste, its application in the field of plant growth mechanisms and in phytoremediation tissues. The current existing problems of AM technology and future development trends are also included to provide the implications for researchers. The adoption of AM technology in agriculture offers significant advantages, including enhanced production efficiency, cost reduction, innovation facilitation, and environmental protection. From initial prototyping to custom production today, AM technology provides more flexible, efficient and sustainable solutions for agricultural manufacturing. This study aims to enhance the detection accuracy and efficiency of cotton bolls in complex natural environments. Addressing the limitations of traditional methods, we developed an automated detection system based on computer vision, designed to optimize performance under variable lighting and weather conditions. We introduced COTTON-YOLO, an improved model based on YOLOv8n, incorporating specific algorithmic optimizations and data augmentation techniques. Key innovations include the C2F-CBAM module to boost feature recognition capabilities, the Gold-YOLO neck structure for enhanced information flow and feature integration, and the WIoU loss function to improve bounding box precision. These advancements significantly enhance the model's environmental adaptability and detection precision. Comparative experiments with the baseline YOLOv8 model demonstrated substantial performance improvements with COTTON-YOLO, particularly a 10.3% increase in the AP50 metric, validating its superiority in accuracy. Additionally, COTTON-YOLO showed efficient real-time processing capabilities and a low false detection rate in field tests. The model's performance in static and dynamic counting scenarios was assessed, showing high accuracy in static cotton boll counting and effective tracking of cotton bolls in video sequences using the ByteTrack algorithm, maintaining low false detections and ID switch rates even in complex backgrounds. Pitaya fruit is a significant agricultural commodity in southern China. The traditional method of determining the ripeness of pitaya by humans is inefficient, it is therefore of the utmost importance to utilize precision agriculture and smart farming technologies in order to accurately identify the ripeness of pitaya fruit. In order to achieve rapid recognition of pitaya targets in natural environments, we focus on pitaya maturity as the research object. During the growth process, pitaya undergoes changes in its shape and color, with each stage exhibiting significant characteristics. Therefore, we divided the pitaya into four stages according to different maturity levels, namely Bud, Immature, Semi-mature and Mature, and we have designed a lightweight detection and classification network for recognizing the maturity of pitaya fruit based on the YOLOv8n algorithm, namely GSE-YOLO (GhostConv SPPELAN-EMA-YOLO). The specific methods include replacing the convolutional layer of the backbone network in the YOLOv8n model, incorporating attention mechanisms, modifying the loss function, and implementing data augmentation. Our improved YOLOv8n model achieved a detection and recognition accuracy of 85.2%, a recall rate of 87.3%, an F1 score of 86.23, and an mAP50 of 90.9%, addressing the issue of false or missed detection of pitaya ripeness in intricate environments. The experimental results demonstrate that our enhanced YOLOv8n model has attained a commendable level of accuracy in discerning pitaya ripeness, which has a positive impact on the advancement of precision agriculture and smart farming technologies. Despite the known benefits of precision agriculture, the adoption is challenging due to the cost of investment and the farm sizes. Therefore, profitability is an important aspect to consider. This study aimed to evaluate the net returns, profitability, and investment efficiencies of PA by different economic farm sizes. The study was based on data retrieved from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) and Eurostat (year 2021). The study examined four countries (Poland, Germany, France, and Romania) under field crop farming using an investment cost of EUR 35,941–EUR 71,883 and a 20% and 15% reduction in the cost of crop protection and fertilizer usage, respectively, without compromising productivity. There is a positive relationship between the adoption of PA and farm returns for larger-scale farms. The result of the profitability and analysis of investment efficiency using Net Present Value (NPV) showed a positive value for economic farm sizes of EUR 100,000 and above. Hence, it is not economically advisable that all farmers use PA technologies with the hope that they will be profitable but with public support (subsidies) more farms will be able to use PA and be profitable. Diagnosing plant diseases is a vital issue in maintaining and developing of agricultural products. These diseases occur with changes in the tissue of different parts of plants. While the previous researches have only been conducted on certain species of plants and specific parts, we propose a comprehensive approach that has reached a high accuracy in diagnosing and classifying the disease of offending plant species by examining their different parts, including leaves, fruits, tree trunks, and seeds. We extract features from different layers of pre-trained AlexNet, ResNet50, VGG16, EfficientNetB0, EfficientNetB3 and EfficientNetB7 deep models with a spatial attention module to classify samples with an SVM classifier with RBF kernel. In order to automate the detection of plant diseases by manned or unmanned agricultural machines, our proposed Agry requires only 0.04089 seconds for image processing and decision making in real time. Also, due to the use of transfer learning, the cost of building the proposed model, including time and resources, is minimized. Vineyards hold considerable soil variability between regions and plots, and there is frequently large soil heterogeneity within plots. Clay content in vineyard soils is of interest with respect to soil management, environmental monitoring, and wine quality. However, spatially resolved clay mapping is laborious and expensive. Gamma-ray spectrometry (GS) is a suitable tool for predicting clay content in precision agriculture when locally calibrated, but it has scarcely been tested site-independently and in vineyards. This study evaluated GS to predict clay content with a site-independent calibration and four machine learning algorithms (Support Vector Machines, Random Forest, k-Nearest Neighbors, and Bayesian regulated neuronal networks) in eight vineyards from four German vine-growing regions. Clay content in the studied soils ranged from 62 to 647 g kg−1. The Random Forest calibration was most suitable. Test set evaluation revealed good model performance for the entire dataset with RPIQ = 4.64, RMSEP = 56.7 g kg−1, and R2 = 0.87; however, prediction quality varied between the sites. Overall, GS with the Random Forest model calibration was appropriate to predict the clay content and its spatial distribution, even for heterogeneous geopedological settings and in individual plots. Precise monitoring of individual crop growth and health status is crucial for precision agriculture practices. However, traditional inspection methods are time-consuming, labor-intensive, prone to human error, and may not provide the comprehensive coverage required for the detailed analysis of crop variability across an entire field. This research addresses the need for efficient and high-resolution crop monitoring by leveraging Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imagery and advanced computational techniques. The primary goal was to develop a methodology for the precise identification, extraction, and monitoring of individual corn crops throughout their growth cycle. This involved integrating UAV-derived data with image processing, computational geometry, and machine learning techniques. Bi-weekly UAV imagery was captured at altitudes of 40 m and 70 m from 30 April to 11 August, covering the entire growth cycle of the corn crop from planting to harvest. A time-series Canopy Height Model (CHM) was generated by analyzing the differences between the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and the Digital Surface Model (DSM) derived from the UAV data. To ensure the accuracy of the elevation data, the DSM was validated against Ground Control Points (GCPs), adhering to standard practices in remote sensing data verification. Local spatial analysis and image processing techniques were employed to determine the local maximum height of each crop. Subsequently, a Voronoi data model was developed to delineate individual crop canopies, successfully identifying 13,000 out of 13,050 corn crops in the study area. To enhance accuracy in canopy size delineation, vegetation indices were incorporated into the Voronoi model segmentation, refining the initial canopy area estimates by eliminating interference from soil and shadows. The proposed methodology enables the precise estimation and monitoring of crop canopy size, height, biomass reduction, lodging, and stunted growth over time by incorporating advanced image processing techniques and integrating metrics for quantitative assessment of fields. Additionally, machine learning models were employed to determine relationships between the canopy sizes, crop height, and normalized difference vegetation index, with Polynomial Regression recording an R-squared of 11% compared to other models. Wood distillate (WD) has recently emerged as a promising bio-stimulant for sustainable legume crop production, owing to its ability to enhance seed yield and quality. However, no studies exist on the effects of WD on chickpea plants at pre-harvesting stages, hindering the farmers' ability to acquire valuable knowledge on the early action of WD on the plants' status and preventing the establishment of proactive measures to optimize WD use in agriculture. In this study, two multispectral, thermographic and spectroradiometric surveys, along with in-situ measurements of specific plant biometric traits, were conducted across the reproductive stage of field-grown chickpea in order to evaluate the early involvement of WD on plant health. The acquired multispectral images were used to calculate the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), revealing a notable ~35% increase in NDVI scores of WD-treated plants at the onset of physiological maturity, and indicating an improved plant status compared to the control (water-treated) plants. Moreover, control and WD-treated plants exhibited distinct spectral signatures across the visible, near-infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectra, suggesting potential changes in their photosynthetic capacity, structural properties and water content both at the leaf and at the pod level. Furthermore, WD-treated plants showed a 25% increase in pod production, particularly at the beginning of seed maturity, suggesting that enhancements in plant status were also reflected in higher pod yields. These results point to a beneficial effect of WD on plant health during the preliminary stages of seed formation and indicate that a combination of both multispectral and spectroradiometric analyses can provide critical insights on the status of chickpea crops at pre-harvesting stages. In addition, these findings emphasize the importance of analyzing pre-harvesting stages to gain insights into the early involvement of WD in promoting plant health and, ultimately, in predicting final crop yields. Indoor production of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is influenced by light spectrum, photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), and the photoperiod. To investigate the effects of different lighting on growth, chlorophyll content, and secondary metabolism, basil plants were grown from seedlings to fully expanded plants in microcosm devices under different light conditions: (a) white light at 250 and 380 μmol·m−2·s−1 under 16/8 h light/dark and (b) white light at 380 μmol·m−2·s−1 under 16/8 and 24/0 h light/dark. A higher yield was recorded under 380 μmol·m−2·s−1 compared to 250 μmol·m−2·s−1 (fresh and dry biomasses 260.6 ± 11.3 g vs. 144.9 ± 14.6 g and 34.1 ± 2.6 g vs. 13.2 ± 1.4 g, respectively), but not under longer photoperiods. No differences in plant height and chlorophyll content index were recorded, regardless of the PPFD level and photoperiod length. Almost the same volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected under the different lighting treatments, belonging to terpenes, aldehydes, alcohols, esters, and ketones. Linalool, eucalyptol, and eugenol were the main VOCs regardless of the lighting conditions. The multivariate data analysis showed a sharp separation of non-volatile metabolites in apical and middle leaves, but this was not related to different PPFD levels. Higher levels of sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes were detected in plants grown under 250 μmol·m−2·s−1 and 380 μmol·m−2·s−1, respectively. In this paper, a flexible graphene oxide-based antenna sensor is designed on the biodegradable substrate. It resonates at a frequency of 3.92 GHz. The flexible sensor is used in assessing water content in sandy loam subsoil near the Arabian Sea from the Western Ghats in India. The volumetric water content (VWC) of dry soil varies between approximately 0.06 VWC m3 m–3 to 0.7 VWC m3 m–3. The antenna sensor exhibits a linearity of 92.02% and a sensitivity of 402.6 MHz/VWC-(m3 m–3). The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of the antenna sensor are 0.75 VWC and 2.5 VWC m3 m–3. Soybean is an essential crop to fight global food insecurity and is of great economic importance around the world. Along with genetic improvements aimed at boosting yield, soybean seed composition also changed. Since conditions during crop growth and development influences nutrient accumulation in soybean seeds, remote sensing offers a unique opportunity to estimate seed traits from the standing crops. Capturing phenological developments that influence seed composition requires frequent satellite observations at higher spatial and spectral resolutions. This study introduces a novel spectral fusion technique called multiheaded kernel-based spectral fusion (MKSF) that combines the higher spatial resolution of PlanetScope (PS) and spectral bands from Sentinel 2 (S2) satellites. The study also focuses on using the additional spectral bands and different statistical machine learning models to estimate seed traits, e.g., protein, oil, sucrose, starch, ash, fiber, and yield. The MKSF was trained using PS and S2 image pairs from different growth stages and predicted the potential VNIR1 (705 nm), VNIR2 (740 nm), VNIR3 (783 nm), SWIR1 (1610 nm), and SWIR2 (2190 nm) bands from the PS images. Our results indicate that VNIR3 prediction performance was the highest followed by VNIR2, VNIR1, SWIR1, and SWIR2. Among the seed traits, sucrose yielded the highest predictive performance with RFR model. Understanding and accurately predicting stomatal conductance in almond orchards is critical for effective water-management strategies, especially under challenging climatic conditions. In this study, machine-learning (ML) regression models trained on multispectral (MSP) and thermal infrared (TIR) data acquired from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are used to address this challenge. Through an analysis of spectral indices calculated from UAV-based data and feature-selection methods, this study investigates the predictive performance of three ML models (extra trees, ET; stochastic gradient descent, SGD; and extreme gradient boosting, XGBoost) in predicting stomatal conductance. The results show that the XGBoost model trained with both MSP and TIR data had the best performance (R2 = 0.87) and highlight the importance of integrating surface-temperature information in addition to other spectral indices to improve prediction accuracy, up to 11% more when compared to the use of only MSP data. Key features, such as the green–red vegetation index, chlorophyll red-edge index, and the ratio between canopy temperature and air temperature (Tc-Ta), prove to be relevant features for model performance and highlight their importance for the assessment of water stress dynamics. Furthermore, the implementation of Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) values facilitates the interpretation of model decisions and provides valuable insights into the contributions of the features. Crop diseases significantly impact crop yields, and promoting specialized control of crop diseases is crucial for ensuring agricultural production stability. Disease identification primarily relies on human visual inspection, which is inefficient, inaccurate, and subjective. This study focused on the plum red spot (Polystigma rubrum), proposing a two-stage detection algorithm based on deep learning and assessing the severity of the disease through lesion coverage rate. The specific contributions are as follows: We utilized the object detection model YOLOv8 to strip leaves to eliminate the influence of complex backgrounds. We used an improved U-Net network to segment leaves and lesions. We combined Dice Loss with Focal Loss to address the poor training performance due to the pixel ratio imbalance between leaves and disease spots. For inconsistencies in the size and shape of leaves and lesions, we utilized ODConv and MSCA so that the model could focus on features at different scales. After verification, the accuracy rate of leaf recognition is 95.3%, and the mIoU, mPA, mPrecision, and mRecall of the leaf disease segmentation model are 90.93%, 95.21%, 95.17%, and 95.21%, respectively. Due to its rich nutritional composition, biogas slurry can serve as a special liquid fertilizer. However, the application of slurry in agricultural fields currently faces challenges such as reliance on skilled famers' experience, low precision, and difficulty in accurately controlling the irrigation dosage. To address these issues, an agricultural biogas slurry mixing agricultural machinery and its system has been designed and developed with the aim of enhancing the precision and safety of slurry application. The structure of the device has been designed, filter components have been selected, and improvements have been made to the structure of traditional connectors. Taking into account factors such as soil and humidity, an algorithm based on biogas slurry conductivity for slurry mixing decisions and the feedback control mechanism has been designed. After assembling the prototype, experiments were conducted, and the results showed that after processing by the system, compared to the calculated theoretical optimum, the concentration error of each component in the mixed fertilizer was controlled within 10%, and the conductivity fluctuation range was within 5%. This indicates that the overall ratio accuracy and stability of the biogas slurry mixing system are high. The biogas slurry mixing agricultural machinery and its system provide a novel intelligent equipment solution for the precise application of slurry, effectively enhancing the accuracy and safety of slurry application, reducing the use of chemical fertilizers during agricultural irrigation, and minimizing pollution to the environment and soil.
