Abstract

This paper presents an inquiry into the cognitive-pragmatic specifics of To Room Nineteen by Doris Lessing. Its major goal is to investigate the cognitive means that enable the fulfilment of the writer’s pragmatic aims in the process of literary communication. The research reveals the writer’s aims of raising the problem of women in a patriarchal society and of intensifying manipulative influence upon the reader, which were achieved via the implicit concept of NEUROSIS and the CONTAINER concept used to metaphorically interpret the described events. The investigation proved that the concept of NEUROSIS intensifies psychological manipulation of the reader, ensuring the reader’s engagement in message creation, preserving the reader’s trust regardless of the transference of inaccurate information, etc. It participates in the reader’s neural simulation through nomination of somatisms, retrieval of memories from previous painful experiences, the activation of the “mirroring” phenomenon, etc. Metaphoric modelling provides a psychological manipulation of the reader’s perception through shading and highlighting of the appropriate facets, creating proper associations and establishing specific images. It implements activation of the neural activity, creating imaginative simulation of the reader’s body in action and involving personal cognitive experiences.

2. PROSODIC EXPRESSION OF EMOTIONAL-AND-PRAGMATIC POTENTIAL OF A SPOKEN ENGLISH PROVERB

Abstract

The paper is a study of the prosodic features involved in the oral actualisation of English proverbs as influenced by structural, emotional and pragmatic factors, which are defined within the framework of a new energetic approach to the research of phonetic phenomena. On the basis of auditory and acoustic analyses of English proverbs, the authors describe the energetic specificity of their prosodic organisation. This description introduces energy-grams formed with the use of a quantitative K-criterion of the texts’ emotional and pragmatic potentials, as well as their typical intonation patterns. Using the traditional method of linguistic interpretation of the results obtained, the authors substantiate invariant and variant intonation patterns of English proverbs, whose parameters are described both within the text’s structural elements and at their junctures. The authors come to the conclusion that an energetic approach to the study of a complex interaction of emotional, pragmatic, semantic and structural factors makes it possible to present a comprehensive description of invariant and variant prosodic patterns for any type of texts on the basis of such fundamental linguistic categories as emotion, pragmatics, structure, and meaning.

3. CORRELATION OF THE ENGLISH FAIRY TALE’S PLOT STRUCTURE AND ITS PROSODIC ORGANISATION

Abstract

In the paper on the basis of a systemic analysis of the English fairy tales’ semantic, functional and structural characteristics the author updates its definition of a small form folk text, outlines typical genre characteristics and substantiates a hierarchical subordination of its functional features. The paper also advances the algorithmic model, representing the steps of unfolding the English fairy tales’ plot elements, which serves as a theoretical and methodological ground for the experimental phonetic study of prosodic means that organise the text of a fairy tale. Within the process of model formation, the author performs a matrix analysis of the fairy tale’s content and compositional structure, presented as a systemic algorithmic scheme. The evaluation of emotional and pragmatic potentials of the spoken fairy tale made it possible to describe the peculiarities of prosodic features functioning within its structural elements (exposition → development of the events → climax → denouement) and at their junctures as well as substantiate its invariant and variant intonation patterns. The carried out auditory analysis proves that there is a direct correlation between the fairy tale’s plot structure and its prosodic means, whose specific interaction triggers creative and cognitive processes in the recipient’s mind aimed at conveying the text pragmatic aim.

Abstract

В настоящей работе выявлены дискурсообразующие характеристики научно-популярного интернет-издания ‘The Verge’, отражающие глобальные интенции издания, и мотивирующие реализацию ключевых принципов его композиционного структурирования. Установлено, что дискурсивная специфика рассматриваемого интернетиздания детерминирована особенностями читательской аудитории и необходимостью оптимизировать применение лингвопрагматических средств и мультимедийных приемов с целью осуществления основной прагматической установки научно-популярного медиатекста - популяризации научного знания. = The paper discusses discourse characteristics of a popular science online edition ‘The Verge’, which reflect global intentions of the edition and motivate the implementation of its key principles of composition structuring. It has been found that the discursive specificity of the considered online edition is determined by the specifics of the readership and the need to optimize the use of linguopragmatic means and multimedia techniques in order to implement the main pragmatic aim of a popular science media text - popularization of scientific knowledge.

The paper focuses on the analysis of the communicative situation’s role in the prosodic organization of English utterances of sympathy. The analysis included several steps which presupposed the subdivision of all the utterances into four groups according to their pragmatic aim. The utterances were further analyzed according to the type of communicative situation they were actualized in: formal and informal. The results of the research showed the correlation between the prosodic organization and the type of a communicative situation.

9. Communicative Strategy vs. Manipulative Strategy

Abstract

Аналізується комунікативна стратегія як засіб маніпулятивної комунікації. Остання представлена як особливий вид когнітивно-прагматичної діяльності. Охарактеризовано різноманітні підходи до вивчення комунікативних стратегій і тактик, здійснено порівняльний аналіз комунікативної та маніпулятивної стратегій. Досліджуючи феномен комунікативної стратегії, доходимо висновку, що, з одного боку, стратегію розуміють як ланцюг рішень мовця, комунікативний вибір тих чи інших мовленнєвих дій і мовних засобів. Ключовим у встановленні відмінностей між комунікативною і маніпулятивною стратегіями стало розрізнення двох видів цілей – прагматичних та конструктивних (за О. М. Мороховським). Аналіз поняття «стратегії» доводить, що маніпулятивна комунікативна стратегія визначається наявністю двох прагматичних цілей, одна з яких лише функціонально виконує роль такої, тобто є проміжною, інша – справжньою метою маніпулятора. Маніпулятивна стратегія в цій роботі розглядається як інтегративне поняття, що поєднує два аспекти стратегічної дії – когнітивний та мовленнєвий. The article deals with the analysis of a communicative strategy as a device for manipulative communication. The latter is represented in the article as a special type of cognitive and pragmatic activity. The characteristics of various approaches to the study of comm unicative strategies and tactics is given. The comparative analysis of communicative and manipulative strategies is performed. The differentiation of two types of goals: pragmatic and constructive (defined by O. M. Morohovskyi) has become the key element in the determination of distinction between communicative and manipulative strategies. The analysis of a notion of strategy proves that manipulative communicative strategy is determined by the existence of two pragmatic aims – one of which fulfils the role only functionally, i.e. is a transitionary aim, the second one is regarded as a the real aim of a manipulator. In the study manipulative strategy is regarded as an integrative notion that combines two aspects of strategic action – cognitive and verbal.

Проаналізовано прирощення смислу тексту художнього твору завдяки трансформаціям, які прецедент ний текст набуває після входження в текстовий простір епіграми. The article deals with cognitive aspect of inclusion of precedent text in the structure of the English epigram and their functions. The article analyzes an increase of text meaning due to the transformations of precedent text included into textual space of an epigram.
