Abstract

We revisit the idea that the inflaton may have dissipated part of its energy into a thermal bath during inflation, considering monomial inflationary potentials and three different forms of dissipation rate. Using a numerical Fokker-Planck approach to describe the stochastic dynamics of inflationary fluctuations, we confront this scenario with current bounds on the spectrum of curvature fluctuations and primordial gravitational waves. We also obtain analytical approximations that outperform those frequently used in previous analyses. We show that only our numerical Fokker-Planck method is accurate, fast and precise enough to test these models against current data. We advocate its use in future studies of warm inflation. We also apply the stochastic inflation formalism to this scenario, finding that a commonly implemented large thermal correction to the primordial spectrum--that had been argued to become apparent with it--is actually not required. Improved bounds on the scalar spectral index will further constrain warm inflation in the near future.

Abstract

Most of the phenomenology of loop quantum gravity in the cosmological sector is based on the so-called holonomy correction to the Hamiltonian constraint. It straightforwardly modifies the Friedmann equations. In this work, we investigate the influence of corrections generalizing the one usually used in loop quantum cosmology. We find that a long enough inflation phase can be generated by purely quantum geometrical effects but we also underline the limitations of this scenario. In addition, we study the effects of generalized holonomy corrections on an inflationary phase generated by a massive scalar field. At the level of perturbations, we investigate in details the consequences on the primordial scalar power spectrum.

Abstract

Oscillations in the frequency profile of the scalar-induced contribution to the stochastic gravitational wave background are a characteristic signal for small-scale features during inflation. We investigate how this oscillatory frequency profile is affected by the expansion history of the post-inflationary universe. Our results are applicable as long as the equation of state of the universe can be taken as constant during the period in which the gravitational waves are produced, and we compute the spectrum of gravitational waves induced by both sharp and resonant features, associated with oscillations in $k$ and $\log(k)$, respectively. For resonant features, the frequencies of the oscillatory contributions to the gravitational wave spectrum are unaffected by the equation of state, but not their relative amplitudes, allowing one to extract information about both inflationary physics and the post-inflationary expansion history from the oscillatory pattern. For sharp features we find that the gravitational wave spectrum only exhibits prominent modulations as long as the propagation speed of density fluctuations is $c_s, 35 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

We analyse the post-inflationary contribution to the stochastic gravitational wave background due to a resonant feature in the scalar power spectrum, which is characterised by an oscillation in $\log(k)$, complementing our previous work arXiv:2012.02761 on sharp features. Primordial features signal departures of inflation from the single-field slow-roll paradigm and are motivated by embeddings of inflation in high energy physics. We find that the oscillation in the scalar power spectrum leads to a corresponding modulation in the gravitational wave spectrum that can be understood as a superposition of two oscillatory pieces, one with the original frequency of the scalar oscillations, and one with double frequency. For oscillations with slowly-varying amplitude this oscillatory part can be computed semi-analytically. Our results can be used as templates for the reconstruction of the signal from future data and permit extracting information about the small scale scalar power spectrum from measurements of the stochastic gravitational wave background., 46 pages, 21 figures

Abstract

We present constraints on inflationary dynamics and features in the primordial power spectrum of scalar perturbations using the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature, polarization data from Planck 2018 data release and updated likelihoods. We constrain the slow-roll dynamics using Hilltop Quartic Potential and Starobinsky $R+R^2$ model in the Einstein frame using the Planck 2018 binned Plik likelihood. Using the Hilltop as base potential we construct Whipped Inflation potential to introduce suppression in the scalar power spectrum at large angular scales. We notice marginal (68% C.L.) preference of suppression from the large scale temperature angular power spectrum. However, large-scale E-mode likelihood, based on high frequency instrument cross spectrum, does not support this suppression and in the combined data the preference towards the suppression becomes negligible. Based on the Hilltop and Starobinsky model we construct the Wiggly Whipped Inflation potentials to introduce oscillatory features along with the suppression. We use unbinned data from the recently released CamSpec v12.5 likelihood which updates Planck 2018 results. We compare the Bayesian evidences of the feature models with their baseline slow-roll potentials. We find that the complete slow-roll baseline potential is moderately preferred against potentials which generate features. Compared to Planck 2015 PlikHM bin1 likelihood, we find that the significance of sharp features has decreased owing to the updates in the data analysis pipeline. Abstract

International audience; The primordial scalar power spectrum is well constrained by the cosmological data on large scales, primarily from the observations of the anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background. Over the last few years, it has been recognized that a sharp rise in power on small scales will lead to the enhanced formation of primordial black holes (PBHs) and also generate secondary gravitational waves (GWs) of higher and, possibly, detectable amplitudes. It is well understood that scalar power spectra with COBE normalized amplitude on the cosmic microwave background scales and enhanced amplitudes on smaller scales can be generated due to deviations from slow roll in single, canonical scalar field models of inflation. In fact, an epoch of so-called ultraslow roll inflation can lead to the desired amplification. We find that scenarios that lead to ultraslow roll can be broadly classified into two types, one wherein there is a brief departure from inflation (a scenario referred to as punctuated inflation) and another wherein such a departure does not arise. In this work, we consider a set of single field inflationary models involving the canonical scalar field that lead to ultraslow roll and punctuated inflation and examine the formation of PBHs as well as the generation of secondary GWs in these models. Apart from considering specific models, we reconstruct potentials from certain functional choices of the first slow roll parameter leading to ultraslow roll and punctuated inflation and investigate their observational signatures. In addition to the secondary tensor power spectrum, we calculate the secondary tensor bispectrum in the equilateral limit in these scenarios. Moreover, we calculate the inflationary scalar bispectrum that arises in all the cases and discuss the imprints of the scalar non-Gaussianities on the extent of PBHs formed and the amplitude of the secondary GWs generated. We conclude with a discussion on the wider implications of our results.

Abstract

The present epoch of accelerated cosmic expansion is supposed to be driven by an unknown constituent called dark energy, which in the standard model takes the form of a cosmological constant, characterized by a constant equation of state w=-1. An interesting perspective over the role and nature of dark energy can be achieved by drawing a parallel with a previous epoch of accelerated expansion, inflation, which we assume to be driven by a single scalar field, the inflaton. Since the Planck satellite has constrained the value of $n_s$ away from 1, the inflaton cannot be identified with a pure cosmological constant, as is also suggested by the fact that inflation ended. Thus, it is interesting to verify whether a hypothetical observer would have been able to measure the deviation of the w of the inflaton from -1. To do so, we consider a class of single-field slow-roll inflationary models dubbed HSR{i}, where the hierarchy of Hubble slow-roll parameters is truncated at the i-th order. The models are tested through a MCMC analysis based on combinations of the latest Planck and BICEP2/Keck data sets, and the resulting chains are converted into sets of allowed evolution histories of w. HSR{1} is excluded observationally since it would predict that $n_s=1$, in contrast with the recent Planck constraints, while we find that HSR{2} would prefer w>-1, but is disfavoured by the addition of the BICEP2/Keck data. Abstract

Measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectral distortions (SDs) will open a new window on the very early universe, providing new information complementary to that gathered from CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies. In this paper, we study their synergy as a function of the characteristics of the considered experiments. In particular, we examine a wide range of sensitivities for possible SD measurements, spanning from FIRAS up to noise levels 1000 times better than PIXIE, and study their constraining power when combined with current or future CMB anisotropy experiments such as Planck or LiteBIRD plus CMB-S4. We consider a number of different cosmological models such as the $\Lambda$CDM, as well as its extensions with the running of the scalar spectral index, the decay or the annihilation of dark matter (DM) particles. While upcoming CMB anisotropy experiments will be able to decrease the uncertainties on inflationary parameters such as $A_s$ and $n_s$ by about a factor 2 in the $\Lambda$CDM case, we find that an SD experiment 100 times more sensitive than PIXIE (comparable to the proposed Super-PIXIE satellite) could potentially further contribute to constrain these parameters. This is even more significant in the case of the running of the scalar spectral index. Furthermore, as expected, constraints on DM particles decaying at redshifts probed by SDs will improve by orders of magnitude even with an experiment 10 times worse than PIXIE as compared to CMB anisotropies or Big Bang Nucleosynthesis bounds. On the contrary, DM annihilation constraints will not significantly improve over CMB anisotropy measurements. Abstract

Accurate cosmological parameter estimates using polarization data of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) put stringent requirements on map calibration, as highlighted in the recent results from the Planck satellite. In this paper, we point out that a model-dependent determination of polarization calibration can be achieved by the joint fit of the TE and EE CMB power spectra. This provides a valuable cross-check to band-averaged polarization efficiency measurements determined using other approaches. We demonstrate that, in $\Lambda$CDM, the combination of the TE and EE constrain polarization calibration with sub-percent uncertainty with Planck data and 2% uncertainty with SPTpol data. We arrive at similar conclusions when extending $\Lambda$CDM to include the amplitude of lensing $A_{\rm L}$, the number of relativistic species $N_{\rm eff}$, or the sum of the neutrino masses $\sum m_{\nu}$. The uncertainties on cosmological parameters are minimally impacted when marginalizing over polarization calibration, except, as can be expected, for the uncertainty on the amplitude of the primordial scalar power spectrum $\ln(10^{10} A_{\rm s})$, which increases by $20-50$%. However, this information can be fully recovered by adding TT data. For current and future ground-based experiments, SPT-3G and CMB-S4, we forecast the cosmological parameter uncertainties to be minimally degraded when marginalizing over polarization calibration parameters. In addition, CMB-S4 could constrain its polarization calibration at the level of $\sim$0.2% by combining TE and EE, and reach $\sim$0.06% by also including TT. We therefore conclude that relying on calibrating against Planck polarization maps, whose statistical uncertainty is limited to $\sim$0.5%, would be insufficient for upcoming experiments., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

We identify a characteristic pattern in the scalar-induced stochastic gravitational wave background from particle production during inflation. If particle production is sufficiently efficient, the scalar power spectrum exhibits $\mathcal{O}(1)$ oscillations periodic in $k$, characteristic of a sharp feature, with an exponentially enhanced envelope. We systematically study the properties of the induced spectrum of gravitational waves sourced after inflation and find that this inherits the periodic structure in $k$, resulting in a peak in the gravitational wave energy density spectrum with $\mathcal{O}(10 \%)$ modulations. The frequency of the oscillation in the scalar power spectrum is determined by the scale of the feature during inflation and in turn sets the frequency of modulations in the gravitational wave signal. We present an explicit realisation of this phenomenon in the framework of multifield inflation, in the form of a strong sharp turn in the inflationary trajectory. The resulting stochastic background is potentially detectable in future gravitational wave observatories, and considerations of backreaction and perturbativity can be used to constrain the parameter space from the theoretical side. Abstract

Planck Collaboration: et al., arXiv:1807.06209v3, We present cosmological parameter results from the final full-mission Planck measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, combining information from the temperature and polarization maps and the lensing reconstruction. Compared to the 2015 results, improved measurements of large-scale polarization allow the reionization optical depth to be measured with higher precision, leading to significant gains in the precision of other correlated parameters. Improved modelling of the small-scale polarization leads to more robust constraints on many parameters, with residual modelling uncertainties estimated to affect them only at the 0.5σ level. We find good consistency with the standard spatially-flat 6-parameter ΛCDM cosmology having a power-law spectrum of adiabatic scalar perturbations (denoted “base ΛCDM” in this paper), from polarization, temperature, and lensing, separately and in combination. A combined analysis gives dark matter density Ωch2 = 0.120 ± 0.001, baryon density Ωbh2 = 0.0224 ± 0.0001, scalar spectral index ns = 0.965 ± 0.004, and optical depth τ = 0.054 ± 0.007 (in this abstract we quote 68% confidence regions on measured parameters and 95% on upper limits). The angular acoustic scale is measured to 0.03% precision, with 100θ* = 1.0411 ± 0.0003. These results are only weakly dependent on the cosmological model and remain stable, with somewhat increased errors, in many commonly considered extensions. Assuming the base-ΛCDM cosmology, the inferred (model-dependent) late-Universe parameters are: Hubble constant H0 = (67.4 ± 0.5) km s−1 Mpc−1; matter density parameter Ωm = 0.315 ± 0.007; and matter fluctuation amplitude σ8 = 0.811 ± 0.006. We find no compelling evidence for extensions to the base-ΛCDM model. Combining with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements (and considering single-parameter extensions) we constrain the effective extra relativistic degrees of freedom to be Neff = 2.99 ± 0.17, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction Neff = 3.046, and find that the neutrino mass is tightly constrained to ∑mν < 0.12 eV. The CMB spectra continue to prefer higher lensing amplitudes than predicted in base ΛCDM at over 2σ, which pulls some parameters that affect the lensing amplitude away from the ΛCDM model; however, this is not supported by the lensing reconstruction or (in models that also change the background geometry) BAO data. The joint constraint with BAO measurements on spatial curvature is consistent with a flat universe, ΩK = 0.001 ± 0.002. Also combining with Type Ia supernovae (SNe), the dark-energy equation of state parameter is measured to be w0 = −1.03 ± 0.03, consistent with a cosmological constant. We find no evidence for deviations from a purely power-law primordial spectrum, and combining with data from BAO, BICEP2, and Keck Array data, we place a limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio r0.002 < 0.06. Standard big-bang nucleosynthesis predictions for the helium and deuterium abundances for the base-ΛCDM cosmology are in excellent agreement with observations. The Planck base-ΛCDM results are in good agreement with BAO, SNe, and some galaxy lensing observations, but in slight tension with the Dark Energy Survey’s combined-probe results including galaxy clustering (which prefers lower fluctuation amplitudes or matter density parameters), and in significant, 3.6σ, tension with local measurements of the Hubble constant (which prefer a higher value). Abstract

[Abridged] Recently, the production of primordial black holes (PBHs) and secondary gravitational waves (GWs) due to enhanced scalar power on small scales have garnered considerable attention in the literature. Often, the mechanism considered to arrive at such enhanced power involves a modification of the standard slow roll inflationary dynamics, achieved with the aid of fine-tuned potentials. In this work, we investigate another well known method to generate features in the power spectrum wherein the initial state of the perturbations is assumed to be squeezed states. This approach is technically straightforward to implement since the Bogoliubov coefficients characterizing the squeezed initial states, can be immediately determined from the desired form of the power spectrum. It is known that, for squeezed initial states, the scalar bispectrum is strongly scale dependent and the consistency condition governing the scalar bispectrum in the squeezed limit is violated. In fact, the non-Gaussianity parameter $f_{_{\rm NL}}$ characterizing the scalar bispectrum proves to be inversely proportional to the squeezed mode and this dependence enhances its amplitude at large wave numbers making it highly sensitive to even a small deviation from the standard Bunch-Davies vacuum. These aspects can possibly aid in leading to enhanced formation of PBHs and generation of secondary GWs. However, we find that: (i) the desired form of the squeezed initial states may be challenging to achieve from a dynamical mechanism, and (ii) the backreaction due to the excited states severely limits the extent of deviation from the Bunch-Davies vacuum at large wave numbers. Abstract

How much more will we learn about single-field inflationary models in the future? We address this question in the context of Bayesian design and information theory. We develop a novel method to compute the expected utility of deciding between models and apply it to a set of futuristic measurements. This necessarily requires one to evaluate the Bayesian evidence many thousands of times over, which is numerically challenging. We show how this can be done using a number of simplifying assumptions and discuss their validity. We also modify the form of the expected utility, as previously introduced in the literature in different contexts, in order to partition each possible future into either the rejection of models at the level of the maximum likelihood or the decision between models using Bayesian model comparison. We then quantify the ability of future experiments to constrain the reheating temperature and the scalar running. Our approach allows us to discuss possible strategies for maximising information from future cosmological surveys. In particular, our conclusions suggest that, in the context of inflationary model selection, a decrease in the measurement uncertainty of the scalar spectral index would be more decisive than a decrease in the uncertainty in the tensor-to-scalar ratio. Abstract

Planck Collaboration: et al., We report on the implications for cosmic inflation of the 2018 release of the Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy measurements. The results are fully consistent with those reported using the data from the two previous Planck cosmological releases, but have smaller uncertainties thanks to improvements in the characterization of polarization at low and high multipoles. Planck temperature, polarization, and lensing data determine the spectral index of scalar perturbations to be ns = 0.9649 ± 0.0042 at 68% CL. We find no evidence for a scale dependence of ns, either as a running or as a running of the running. The Universe is found to be consistent with spatial flatness with a precision of 0.4% at 95% CL by combining Planck with a compilation of baryon acoustic oscillation data. The Planck 95% CL upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, r0.002 < 0.10, is further tightened by combining with the BICEP2/Keck Array BK15 data to obtain r0.002 < 0.056. In the framework of standard single-field inflationary models with Einstein gravity, these results imply that: (a) the predictions of slow-roll models with a concave potential, V″(ϕ) < 0, are increasingly favoured by the data; and (b) based on two different methods for reconstructing the inflaton potential, we find no evidence for dynamics beyond slow roll. Three different methods for the non-parametric reconstruction of the primordial power spectrum consistently confirm a pure power law in the range of comoving scales 0.005 Mpc−1 ≲ k ≲ 0.2 Mpc−1. A complementary analysis also finds no evidence for theoretically motivated parameterized features in the Planck power spectra. For the case of oscillatory features that are logarithmic or linear in k, this result is further strengthened by a new combined analysis including the Planck bispectrum data. The new Planck polarization data provide a stringent test of the adiabaticity of the initial conditions for the cosmological fluctuations. In correlated, mixed adiabatic and isocurvature models, the non-adiabatic contribution to the observed CMB temperature variance is constrained to 1.3%, 1.7%, and 1.7% at 95% CL for cold dark matter, neutrino density, and neutrino velocity, respectively. Planck power spectra plus lensing set constraints on the amplitude of compensated cold dark matter-baryon isocurvature perturbations that are consistent with current complementary measurements. The polarization data also provide improved constraints on inflationary models that predict a small statistically anisotropic quadupolar modulation of the primordial fluctuations. However, the polarization data do not support physical models for a scale-dependent dipolar modulation. Abstract

This letter discusses phenomenological aspects of dimensional reduction predicted by the Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) approach to quantum gravity. The deformed form of the dispersion relation for the fields defined on the CDT space-time is reconstructed. Using the Fermi satellite observations of the GRB 090510 source we find that the energy scale of the dimensional reduction is $E_* > 0.7 \sqrt{4-d_{\rm UV}} \cdot 10^{10}$ GeV at (95 $\%$ CL), where $d_{\rm UV}$ is the value of the spectral dimension in the UV limit. By applying the deformed dispersion relation to the cosmological perturbations it is shown that, for a scenario when the primordial perturbations are formed in the UV region, the scalar power spectrum $\mathcal{P}_S \propto k^{n_S-1}$ where $n_S-1\approx \frac{3 r (d_{\rm UV}-2)}{(d_{\rm UV}-1)r-48}$. Here, $r$ is the tensor-to-scalar ratio. We find that within the considered model, the predicted from CDT deviation from the scale-invariance ($n_S=1$) is in contradiction with the up to date Planck and BICEP2 data., 6 pages, 2 figures, matches version published in EPL

Abstract

Loop quantum cosmology is a tentative approach to model the universe down to the Planck era where quantum gravity settings are needed. The quantization of the universe as a dynamical space-time is inspired by Loop Quantum Gravity ideas. In addition, loop quantum cosmology could bridge contact with astronomical observations, and thus potentially investigate quantum cosmology modellings in the light of observations. To do so however, modelling both the background evolution and its perturbations is needed. The latter describe cosmic inhomogeneities that are the main cosmological observables. In this context, we present the so-called deformed algebra approach implementing the quantum corrections to the perturbed universe at an effective level by taking great care of gauge issues. We particularly highlight that in this framework, the algebra of hypersurface deformation receives quantum corrections, and we discuss their meaning. The primordial power spectra of scalar and tensor inhomogeneities are then presented, assuming initial conditions are set in the contracting phase preceding the quantum bounce and the well-known expanding phase of the cosmic history. These spectra are subsequently propagated to angular power spectra of the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background. It is then shown that regardless of the choice for the initial conditions inside the effective approach for the background evolution (except that they are set in the contracting phase), the predicted angular power spectra of the polarized B-modes exceed the upper bound currently set by observations. The exclusion of this specific version of loop quantum cosmology establishes the falsifiability of the approach, though one shall not conclude here that either loop quantum cosmology or loop quantum gravity is excluded., Comment: Invited paper for a special issue of IJMPD on Loop Quantum Cosmology

Physical review / D 94(10), 103508(2016). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.94.103508, When modeling inflaton fluctuations as a free quantum scalar field, the initial vacuum is conventionally imposed at the infinite past. This is called the Bunch-Davies (BD) vacuum. If however an asymptotically Minkowskian past does not exist, this requires modifications. We derive corrections to the scalar spectral index $n_s$ and the tensor tilt $n_t$ descending from arbitrary mixed states or from explicit non-BD initial conditions. The former may stem from some preinflationary background and can redshift away whereas the latter are induced by a timelike hypersurface parametrizing a physical cutoff. In both cases, we find that corrections scale in parts or fully as O(ε) where ε is the first slow-roll parameter. The precise observational footprint is hence dependent on the model driving inflation. Further, we show how the inflationary consistency relation is altered. Abstract

International audience; In this work we present cosmological bounds on three active neutrino masses and on steriles neutrino species in an extended cosmological scenario in which the primordial power spectrum of scalar perturbations differs from the usual power-law shape predicted by the simplest inflationary models. The power spectrum is instead modeled by means of a piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating polynomial (PCHIP). Our analyses consider different cosmological data sets combined with the new full Planck mission data, which include polarization measurements. When using Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements the constraints on massive neutrinos are degrades, while the addition of a prior on the Hubble constant and of the Barion Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data displace the bound to lower values in agreement with the standard power-law PPS case. Moreover there is no preference fore a non-zero active and sterile neutrino masses if a scenario with ΔNeff massive steriles neutrino species is also considered.
