Different forearm postures can modulate corticospinal excitability. However, there is no consensus on whether handedness plays a role in such a mechanism. This study investigated the effects of 3 forearm postures (pronation, neutral, and supination) on the corticospinal excitability of muscles from the dominant and nondominant upper limbs. Surface electromyography was recorded from the abductor digiti minimi, flexor pollicis brevis, and flexor carpi radialis from both sides of 12 right-handed volunteers. Transcranial magnetic stimulation pulses were applied to each muscle's hotspot in both cerebral hemispheres. Motor-evoked potential peak-to-peak amplitude and latency and resting motor threshold were measured. The data were evaluated by analysis of variance. The level of significance was set at 5%. The resting motor threshold was similar for the 3 muscles and both sides. Motor-evoked potential peak-to-peak amplitude from flexor pollicis brevis was lower during supination, and the dominant upper limb latency was longer. The flexor carpi radialis presented lower motor-evoked potential peak-to-peak amplitudes for neutral and shorter latencies during supination. Abductor digiti minimi seemed not to be affected by posture or side. Musculoskeletal modeling, typically implemented using marker-based systems in laboratory environments, is commonly used for noninvasive estimations of loads. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) have become an alternative for the evaluation of kinematics. However, estimates of spine joint contact forces using IMUs have yet to be thoroughly evaluated. Dynamics tasks and static postures from activities of daily living were captured on 11 healthy subjects using both systems simultaneously. Spine kinematics obtained from IMU- and marker-based systems and L4–L5 joint contact forces were compared. Lateral bending resulted in a weak agreement with significant differences between the 2 systems (P =.02, average root mean-squared error = 4.81), whereas flexion–extension and axial rotation exhibited the highest agreement with no significant differences (P <.05, average root mean-squared error = 5.51 and P <.31, average root mean-squared error = 5.08, respectively). All tasks showed excellent correlations (R2 =.76–.99) in estimated loads between systems. Differences in predicted loads at the L4–L5 were only observed during flexion–extension (1041 N vs 947 N, P =.0004) and walking with weights (814 N vs 727 N, P =.004). Different joint reaction force outcomes were obtained in 2 of the 8 tasks between systems, suggesting that IMUs can be robust tools allowing for convenient and less expensive evaluations and for longitudinal assessments inside and outside the laboratory setting. The purpose of this phenomenological, qualitative, temporal study was to examine the effects of a semester-long physical theater class on body schema (body posture, awareness, confidence, expression) among eight college students. Individual, semi-structured interviews were conducted twice to qualitatively collect the study's data. Two themes emerged from the qualitative/phenomenological data analysis, showcasing how the participants' body schema improved. Based on the first theme, the students emphasized the importance of physical theater in improving body posture, awareness, confidence and comfort during physical theater and their daily functions. Practically learning the body schema of their character was key to excellence in performance. According to the second theme, the participants learned how to express emotions using their whole body and not only their face. They also managed to switch emotions naturally and corporeally. Postural assessments of the lumbar spine lack valuable information about its properties. The purpose of this study was to assess neutral zone (NZ) characteristics via in vivo lumbar spine passive stiffness and relate NZ characteristics to standing lumbar lordosis. A comparison was made between those that develop low back pain during prolonged standing (pain developers) and those that do not (nonpain developers). Twenty-two participants with known pain status stood on level ground, and median lumbar lordosis angle was calculated. Participants were then placed in a near-frictionless jig to characterize their passive stiffness curve and location of their NZ. Overall, both pain developers and nonpain developers stood with a lumbar lordosis angle that was more extended than their NZ boundary. Pain developers stood slightly more extended (in comparison to nonpain developers) and had a lower moment corresponding to the location of their extension NZ boundary. Overall, in comparison to nonpain developers, pain developers displayed a lower moment corresponding to the location of their extension NZ boundary which could correspond to greater laxity in the lumbar spine. This study estimated the contribution of the midfoot joint complex (MJC) kinematics to the pelvis anterior–posterior positions during the stance phase of walking and investigated whether the MJC is functionally coordinated with the lower limb joints to maintain similar pelvic positions across steps. Hip, knee, ankle, and MJC sagittal angles were measured in 11 nondisabled participants during walking. The joints' contributions to pelvic positions were computed through equations derived from a link-segment model. Functional coordination across steps was identified when the MJC contribution to pelvic position varied and the summed contributions of other joints varied in the opposite direction (strong negative covariations [r ≤ −.7] in stance phase instants). We observed that the MJC plantarflexion (arch raising) during the midstance and late stance leads the pelvis backward, avoiding excessive forward displacement. The MJC was the second joint that contributed most to the pelvis positions (around 18% of all joints' contributions), after the ankle joint. The MJC and ankle were the joints that were most frequently coordinated with the other joints (≅70% of the stance phase duration). The findings suggest that the MJC is part of the kinematic chain that determines pelvis positions during walking and is functionally coordinated with the lower limb joints. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wearable activity sensors typically count movement quantity, such as the number of steps taken or the number of upper extremity (UE) counts achieved. However, for some applications, such as neurologic rehabilitation, it may be of interest to quantify the quality of the movement experience (QOME), defined, for example, as how diverse or how complex movement epochs are. We previously found that individuals with UE impairment after stroke exhibited differences in their distributions of forearm postures across the day and that these differences could be quantified with kurtosis-an established statistical measure of the peakedness of distributions. In this paper, we describe further progress toward the goal of providing real-time feedback to try to help people learn to modulate their movement diversity. We first asked the following: to what extent do different movement activities induce different values of kurtosis? We recruited seven unimpaired individuals and evaluated a set of 12 therapeutic activities for their forearm postural diversity using kurtosis. We found that the different activities produced a wide range of kurtosis values, with conventional rehabilitation therapy exercises creating the most spread-out distribution and cup stacking the most peaked. Thus, asking people to attempt different activities can vary movement diversity, as measured with kurtosis. Next, since kurtosis is a computationally expensive calculation, we derived a novel recursive algorithm that enables the real-time calculation of kurtosis. We show that the algorithm reduces computation time by a factor of 200 compared to an optimized kurtosis calculation available in SciPy, across window sizes. Finally, we embedded the kurtosis algorithm on a commercial smartwatch and validated its accuracy using a robotic simulator that wore the smartwatch, emulating movement activities with known kurtosis. This work verifies that different movement tasks produce different values of kurtosis and provides a validated algorithm for the real-time calculation of kurtosis on a smartwatch. These are needed steps toward testing QOME-focused, wearable rehabilitation.

Context: Decreased trunk neuromuscular control is a risk factor for both upper- and lower-extremity injuries, yet there are few reliable and valid clinical tests to identify deficits. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability and known-groups validity of a novel clinical test, the seated trunk control test (STCT). Design: Cross-sectional reliability and known-groups validity study. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: 89 unique participants: 34 were 3 months postoperative anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and 55 healthy controls. Methods: For the STCT, participants sat on a balance board with their eyes closed for three 30-second trials while investigators counted balance errors. Intraclass correlations (ICCs) were used to assess interrater reliability (N = 20) and test–retest reliability (N = 40). To assess known-groups validity, independent t tests were used to compare STCT errors at 3 months post-ACLR with healthy matched controls (N = 34/group). Area under a receiver operating characteristic curve identified an optimal cutoff for distinguishing between groups. Results: The STCT had perfect interrater reliability (ICC2,3 = 1.00) and good test–retest reliability (ICC3,3 =.79; 95% confidence interval =.61–.89). The ACLR group made significantly more errors on the STCT (mean [SD] = 15.5 [5.4]) than controls (mean [SD] = 8.2 [4.1]; P <.001, Cohen d = 1.52). The STCT's ability to distinguish between groups was excellent (area under a ROC curve = 0.86). A cutoff of 12 errors maximized sensitivity (76%) and specificity (85%). Conclusions: The STCT is reliable between raters and across days. It also has excellent ability to distinguish between individuals with a recent ACLR and healthy matched controls, which provides initial evidence to suggest that the STCT may be clinically useful for identifying deficits in trunk neuromuscular control. Adaptations to resistance training and subsequent performance can be undermined by inadequate interset recovery. Methods typically used to monitor recovery were developed for longitudinal use, making them time-inefficient within singular exercise bouts. If valid, perceptual recovery status (PRS) may be used as an efficient and inexpensive assessment tool to monitor individual recovery. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the validity of PRS on monitoring recovery during a high-intensity back-squat session. Methods: Ten healthy men participated in the 2-session study (separated by at least 48 h). Session 1 included anthropometrics, PRS familiarization, and a 1-repetition-maximum back squat. Session 2 included a high-intensity protocol (5 sets of 5 repetitions; 5-min interset recovery; 85% of 1-repetition maximum). PRS was obtained before the first set and during the last 30 seconds of each 5-minute recovery; rating of perceived exertion (RPE) was also collected. A linear position transducer collected mean barbell velocity (MBV). Repeated-measures correlations assessed the common intraindividual relationships of PRS scores to intraset MBV and RPE, respectively. Results: A very large, positive correlation appeared between PRS and MBV (r [95% CI] =.778 [.613 to.878]; P <.0001). A large, negative correlation emerged between PRS and RPE (r [95% CI] = −.549 [−.737 to −.282]; P <.001). Conclusions: Results indicate that PRS can be a means for practitioners to monitor individualized recovery. PRS tracked well with RPE, strengthening its utility in a practitioner-based setting. Findings provide insight into the practicality of PRS for recovery monitoring. Driving posture can lead to musculoskeletal pain. Most work focuses on the lower back; therefore, we know little about automobile seat design and neck posture. This study evaluated an automobile driver seat that individualized upper back support to improve head and neck posture. Specifically, we examined the system's impact on anterior head translation with secondary outcomes of spine posture and perceptions of comfort/well-being compared with a control. Forty participants were block randomized to experience either the activated or deactivated version of the same seating system first. Participants completed two 30-minute simulated driving trials, separated by washout, with continuous measures of anterior head translation, spine posture, and pelvis orientation. Perceptions of comfort/well-being were assessed by survey and open-ended questions immediately following each condition. Small, but statistically significant decreases in anterior head translation and posterior pelvic tilt occurred with the activated seat system. Participants reported lower satisfaction with the activated seat system. Order of the 2 seat conditions affected differences in pelvis orientation and participant perceptions of comfort/well-being. An anthropometric-based seat system targeting upper back support can significantly affect head and pelvic posture but not satisfaction during simulated driving. Previous work assessing the effect of additive noise on the postural control system has found a positive effect of additive white noise on postural dynamics. This study covers two separate experiments that were run sequentially to better understand how the structure of the additive noise signal affects postural dynamics, while also furthering our knowledge of how the intensity of auditory stimulation of noise may elicit this phenomenon. Across the two experiments, we introduced three auditory noise stimulations of varying structure (white, pink, and brown noise). Experiment 1 presented the stimuli at 35 dB while Experiment 2 was presented at 75 dB. Our findings demonstrate a decrease in variability of the postural control system regardless of the structure of the noise signal presented, but only for high intensity auditory stimulation.

Postural instability is a detrimental and often treatment-refractory symptom of Parkinsons disease. While many existing studies quantify the biomechanical deficits among various postural domains (static, anticipatory, and reactive) in this population, less is known regarding the neural network dysfunctions underlying these phenomena. This review will summarize current studies on the cortical and subcortical neural activities during postural responses in healthy subjects and those with Parkinsons disease. We will also review the effects of current therapies, including neuromodulation and feedback-based wearable devices, on postural instability symptoms. With recent advances in implantable devices that allow chronic, ambulatory neural data collection from patients with Parkinsons disease, combined with sensors that can quantify biomechanical measurements of postural responses, future work using these devices will enable better understanding of the neural mechanisms of postural control. Bridging this knowledge gap will be the critical first step towards developing novel neuromodulatory interventions to enhance the treatment of postural instability in Parkinsons disease.

Foot stance and club type's relationship with lead knee joint biomechanics and possible involvement with injury incidences in amateur golfers have not been evaluated. This study included 16 male right-handed amateur golfers who performed golf swings with 2 different foot stances (straight and open) using 4 different club types (driver, 3 iron, 6 iron, and 9 iron) while standing on 2 force plates in a motion capture laboratory. A custom program calculated the kinematics and kinetics of the lead knee. Overall, the open stance reduced most translations, rotations, forces, and torques of the lead knee in all 4 club types when compared with the straight stance. The open stance reduced the rotation motion (−28%), compressive force (−5%), and rotation torque (−9%) when compared with the straight stance, which are the highest contributors to grinding of cartilage. The driver club had significantly larger values in most translations, rotations, forces, and torques when compared among the 4 club types. The open stance reduced the rotation motion, compressive force, and rotation torque in the lead knee joint compared with the straight stance. Introduction: Proprioception is significantly affected by dysfunction of the basal ganglia, which play an important role in sensorimotor integration. Parkinson's disease (PD), which is characterized by progressive loss of the dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra, leads to a variety of motor and nonmotor symptoms throughout the course of the disease. The aim of this study was to determine trunk position sense and to investigate its relationship with spinal posture and spinal mobility in patients with PD. Methods: The study included 35 patients with PD and 35 age-matched control subjects. Trunk position sense was determined with "trunk reposition errors." A spinal mouse was used to assess spinal posture and spinal mobility. Results: According to the Hoehn–Yahr rating scale, the majority of the patients were in Stage 1 (68.6%). Trunk position sense was found to be significantly decreased in patients with PD compared with the control group (p <.001) but was not correlated with spinal posture and spinal mobility in patients with PD (p >.05). Conclusions: This study revealed that trunk position sense was impaired in PD from the early stages of the disease. However, neither spinal posture nor spinal mobility was associated with decreased trunk proprioception. Further research into these relationships in the late stages of PD is needed. Drumming is a non-vocal auditory display producing airborne as well as seismic vibrations by tapping body extremities on a surface. It is mostly described as an alarm signal but is also discussed to signal dominance or mating quality. To clarify the function of drumming in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus), we compared the occurrence of drumming during predator, opposite-sex and same-sex encounters. We tested 48 captive Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) in three experiments. In predator experiments, subjects were exposed alone or with their cagemate to aerial and terrestrial predator dummies. In social encounter experiments, familiar and unfamiliar male–female dyads and same-sex dyads were confronted. For the same-sex encounters, a dominance index was calculated for each subject based on the number of won and lost conflicts. Drumming and drumming-call combinations were counted, and a multi-parametric sound analysis was performed. In all experiments drumming and drumming-call combinations occurred. In predator experiments, more subjects drummed when confronted with the predator stimulus than in the habituation phase. In social encounter experiments, more subjects drummed when facing an unfamiliar than a familiar conspecific. In addition, the accompanying call type and body posture of the sender differed between experiments. Thus, we suggest that whereas drumming signals an increased arousal state of the sender, the accompanying call type and the body posture signal context specific information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soft multimodal sensors represent a promising approach for applications in wearable systems and skin‐adhesive devices, benefiting from their flexibility and body compatibility. However, the complexity of sensor wiring design poses challenges while employing multimodal decoupling. Although recent studies have applied various methods, such as adjusting the electrical properties of materials, these methods encounter limitations in signal decoupling when multichannel measurements are implemented. In this study, a signal measurement method utilizing frequency response analysis is developed using a multi‐band band‐stop filter (MBBSF) for multiple multimodal sensors. This approach enables the decoupling of different types of sensors and allows for the simultaneous collection of sensor data through a two‐wire connection. Consequently, it facilitates the concurrent and independent real‐time assessment of strain and force in each sensor. A sensor glove is developed incorporating multiple multimodal sensors with a two‐wire connection to measure grip posture and force. This glove is used effectively to classify unknown objects, thereby demonstrating its practical utility. This practical application provides a promising solution to the complex wiring challenges commonly encountered in multi‐modal sensor wearable systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: This work proposes a smooth time‐varying controller for trajectory tracking and posture regulation problems of car‐like mobile robots (CLMR). Currently, few studies focus on the control problems of CLMR's kinematic model. Global trajectory tracking or global posture stabilization controller for CLMR has not yet been proposed. In this study, we propose a global trajectory tracking controller for CLMR for the first time. By setting a specific reference trajectory, the controller is generalized to the posture stabilization task. Obstacle avoidance is also taken into consideration in posture stabilization task. Unlike the prototypical method of transforming the model into a nonholonomic chained‐form system, the proposed method is designed based on the original tracking error equation. Therefore our approach does not have singularities and has a global attraction region. Furthermore, the global convergence of the proposed controllers is strictly proved using the proof by contradiction and Barbalat's lemma. Background: Studies have found that in healthy individuals without nasal disease, changes in posture cause an increase in nasal resistance, especially in the prone posture. Many patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) sleep in a prone posture, but no studies have examined the effect of this change in posture on nasal resistance in patients with OSAS. Therefore, we conducted this study to investigate this posture-related physical phenomenon in individuals with OSAS. Methods: We evaluated the nasal patency of 29 patients diagnosed with OSAS using the visual analog scale (VAS), acoustic rhinometry, and video-endoscopy in the sitting, supine, and prone postures. Results: In the OSAS group, both supine and prone postures significantly influenced subjective nasal blockage and led to a notable reduction in the minimal cross-sectional area (mCSA) as determined by acoustic rhinometry, compared to the sitting posture. The prone posture exhibited a more pronounced effect than the supine posture. Endoscopic evaluations further revealed increased hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate in the supine posture for the right nasal passage and the prone posture for the left. However, no significant differences were observed between the prone and supine postures. Conclusion: In OSAS patients, nasal resistance significantly increased in supine and prone postures compared to sitting, with the prone posture showing a greater effect. Clinicians should consider a patient's habitual sleep posture and the effects of postural changes when assessing OSAS severity and devising treatment plans. Level of Evidence: 4. Purpose: A growing body of research indicates a correlation between occupational exposure, particularly among individuals in driving-related occupations, and the incidence of low back pain (LBP). Methods: Databases were systematically searched, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and SinoMed, from their inception through December 2023 for relevant studies of the prevalence and risk factors of LBP among professional drivers. Subsequent meta-analyses were performed utilizing Stata 17.0 and RevMan 5.4 software, while risk factor indicators were assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation evidence quality grading system. Results: A systematic review and meta-analysis comprising 19 studies involving 7,723 patients indicated that the incidence of LBP among drivers was 39% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.20–0.57) in the past 7 days and 53% (95% CI 0.43–0.63) in the past 12 months. A subgroup analysis revealed a prevalence of 48% (95% CI 0.33–0.64) in 2005–2015 and 56% (95% CI 0.42–0.70) in 2016–2023. Among the identified factors, robust evidence highlighted age ≥ 41 years (odds ratio [OR] = 2.10; 95% CI 1.36–3.24; P = 0.0008), alcohol consumption (OR = 1.75; 95% CI 1.31–2.34; P = 0.0001), sleeping < 6 h/night (OR = 1.60; 95% CI 1.13–2.24; P = 0.007), uncomfortable seating (OR = 1.71; 95% CI 1.23–2.36; P = 0.001), improper driving posture (OR = 2.37; 95% CI 1.91–2.94; P < 0.00001), and manual handling (OR = 2.23; 95% CI 1.72–2.88; P < 0.00001) as significant risk factors for LBP. There was moderate evidence of a lack of exercise (OR = 1.78; 95% CI 1.37–2.31; P < 0.0001), working > 10 h/day (OR = 2.49; 95% CI 1.89–3.28; P < 0.00001), > 5 years' driving experience (OR = 2.12; 95% CI 1.66–2.69; P < 0.00001), a lack of back support (OR = 1.81; 95% CI 1.25–2.62; P = 0.002), high work-related pressure (OR = 2.04; 95% CI 1.59–2.61; P < 0.00001), and job dissatisfaction (OR = 1.57; 95% CI 1.23–2.01; P = 0.0003) as moderate risk factors. There was no evidence of body mass index or smoking as risk factors for LBP among professional drivers. Conclusion: The current evidence indicates an increasing annual trend in the prevalence of LBP among professional drivers. Factors including age ≥ 41 years, alcohol consumption, and sleeping < 6 h/night were among the 12 influential factors contributing to LBP in professional drivers. Since the early 1900s, the terms body schema and body image denoted the internal representations of the body. Bonnier's (1905, Revue Neurologique, 13, 605) schema is a conscious spatial representation of the size, shape, and position of the body, and of body parts, whose dysfunction brings about aschématia, and hypo‐, hyper‐, and paraschématia. The two schemata of Head and Holmes (1911, Brain, 34, 102) are an unconscious plastic postural schema, for the maintenance of posture and balance and for the coding of the position of body parts, and a conscious superficial schema, for the localisation of somatosensory stimuli. Pick's (1922, Psychologische Forschung, 1, 303) body schema refers to a structural description of the body, including the position of body parts and their spatial relationships, defective in autotopagnosia. Schilder's (1935, The image and appearance of the human body) body image is a comprehensive construct, covering physiological, evolutional, neurological and neuropsychological, psychiatric and sociological aspects. Lhermitte's (1939, L'image de notre corps) image, based on the views of the abovementioned authors, is defective in bodily neuropsychological disorders. The two terms have been used interchangeably, to denote (hemi‐)asomatognosia, anosognosia, autotopagnosia, depersonalisation, personal neglect, phantom and supernumerary limbs, somatoparaphrenia. Their properties have been summarized with general dichotomies: schema for action in space (“where” system), image for perception (“what” system), after primary sensory processing. While schema and image fractionated into multiple representations of aspects of the body, the two terms are still used to refer to some of these representations, and to their disorders. Astronauts experience combined exposure to a cephalad fluid shift and mild hypercapnia during space missions, potentially contributing to health problems. Such combined exposure may weaken dynamic cerebral autoregulation. The magnitude of cephalad fluid shift varies between individuals, and dynamic cerebral autoregulation may be affected more by greater cephalad fluid shift during combined exposure. We evaluated the dose‐dependent effects of head‐down tilt (HDT) on dynamic cerebral autoregulation during acute combined exposure to HDT and 3% CO2 inhalation. Twenty healthy participants were randomly exposed to three angles of HDT (−5°HDT+CO2, −15°HDT+CO2 and −30°HDT+CO2). After 15 min of rest, participants inhaled room air for 10 min in a horizontal body position, then inhaled 3% CO2 for 10 min under HDT. The last 6 min of data were used for analysis in each stage. Arterial pressure waveforms were obtained using finger blood pressure, and blood velocity waveforms in the middle cerebral artery were obtained using transcranial Doppler ultrasonography. Dynamic cerebral autoregulation was evaluated by transfer function analysis between waveforms. Statistical analysis was performed by two‐way repeated‐measures analysis of variance. The index of transfer function gain in the low‐frequency range increased significantly with −15°HDT+CO2 and −30°HDT+CO2, but no changes were seen with −5°HDT+CO2. Phase in the low‐frequency range decreased significantly with all three protocols. These results of significant changes in indexes of both gain and phase during combined exposure to steep HDT (−15° to −30°) and 3% CO2 inhalation suggest weakened dynamic cerebral autoregulation with the combination of moderate cephalad fluid shift and mild hypercapnia. An intriguing anepigraphic panel, carved in a quarry a few kilometers north of Aswan during the Greco-Roman period, features two registers depicting nine deities and a man of Nubian origin. The latter is portrayed in an unusual defensive posture, with his back turned to the Elephantine triad. While certain gods (Khnum, Satet, Anuket, and Min) are easily recognizable, others pose more challenges in terms of identification. By reconstructing the regional religious context of this period, it becomes possible to suggest identifications for the deities in the lower register, following Min. It seems that these deities are visibly connected to Elephantine theology and, in some instances, may belong to the category of deified humans. The Nubian individual could potentially be the dedicant of this enigmatic scene, with his martial character conveyed not only through his representation but also by the selection of specific gods in the lower register. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is associated with white matter damage and neurodegeneration. Gait is impaired in CAA; however, the neural basis of this impairment is unclear. Are gait impairments in patients with CAA associated with altered cerebral white matter diffusivity and/or atrophy of cortical and subcortical grey matter. Participants with CAA (n=29), Alzheimer's disease (AD; n=16), and normal controls (n=47) were included. Gait was assessed using a 6 m walkway with parameters categorized into rhythm, pace, postural control, and variability domains. The dual-task cost (DTC) of gait speed was calculated for counting backwards, animal fluency, and serial sevens tasks. Whole-brain white matter disruption was quantified using the peak width of skeletonized mean diffusivity (PSMD), and thickness and volume of select cortical, subcortical, and cerebellar regions were quantified using FreeSurfer. In CAA participants, associations were found between PSMD and pace (standardized parameter estimate (β), 95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.17, 0.03–0.32), and medial orbital frontal cortical thickness and counting backwards DTC (parameter estimate (PE), 95 % CI: −5.7 %/SD, −0.24 to −11.23). Across all groups, including CAA, associations were found between PSMD and pace, variability, counting backwards DTC, and animal fluency DTC; between frontal cortical thickness and pace, counting backwards DTC, and animal fluency DTC; between cortical regions affected by AD (inferior parietal cortex, inferior and middle temporal gyrus) and counting backwards DTC; and between thalamus volume and postural control. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries may correlate with lower limb angles and biomechanical factors in both dominant and non-dominant legs at initial contact (IC) post-landing. This study aims to investigate the correlation between ankle angles in three axes at IC and knee and hip joint angles during post-spike landings in professional volleyball players, both pre- and post-fatigue induction. To what extent does fatigue influence lower limb joint angles, and what is the relationship between ankle joint angles and hip and knee angles at IC during the landing phase following a volleyball spike? Under conditions involving the peripheral fatiguing protocol, the lower limb joint angles at IC following post-spike landings were measured in 28 professional male volleyball players aged between 19 and 28 years, who executed the Bosco fatigue protocol both before and after inducing fatigue. A paired t-test was utilized to compare the joint angles pre- and post-fatigue in both dominant and non-dominant legs. Furthermore, Pearson's correlation test was conducted to explore the relationship between ankle angles at IC and the corresponding knee and hip joint angles. The findings of the study revealed that fatigue significantly increased hip external rotation and decreased knee joint flexion and external rotation in both the dominant and non-dominant legs (p < 0.05). Additionally, correlation analysis demonstrated that the ankle joint's positioning in the frontal and horizontal planes was significantly associated with hip flexion and external rotation at the IC, as well as with knee flexion and rotation (0.40 < r < 0.80). Fatigue increased hip external rotation and ankle internal rotation, weakening the correlation between these joints while strengthening the ankle-knee relationship, indicating a reduced hip control in jumps. Deficient postural adaptation and freezing lead to gait initiation abnormalities in Parkinson's disease. Gait initiation is characterized by longer motor preparation, which is a marker of increased risk of falling, and by abnormal postural adjustments. Better understanding the nature of these motor preparation disturbances will enable us to adapt rehabilitation and reduce falls. Our objective was to describe the different components (in the motor, cognitive and limbic domains) of gait initiation parameters in Parkinson's disease. Forty-four patients with Parkinson's disease performed repeated step initiations under high attentional load with decision-making. The proportions of multiple anticipatory postural adjustments and anticipatory postural adjustment errors, markers of abnormal motor preparation, were measured. A logistic regression analysis studied the relationships between step initiation perturbations and the demographic, motor, cognitive, and neuropsychiatric characteristics of the patients. Multiple anticipatory postural adjustments and anticipatory postural adjustments errors lengthened step execution time. Motor severity explained the multiple anticipatory postural adjustments, suggesting a pathological role. Attentional performance explained anticipatory postural adjustments errors. Demographic and neuropsychiatric characteristics didn't contribute significantly to the abnormal anticipatory postural adjustments. Although several factors, such as sex and body schema, contribute to gait function, factors for gait dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) have not been elucidated. Postural verticality, a higher-order neural mechanism of gait, is involved in generation of a gait program in healthy individuals; however, its role in patients with PD is unclear. Although subjective postural vertical (SPV), which denotes cognitive information about posture with verticality as the reference axis, is anteriorly and laterally shifted in patients with PD, the presence of sex-related differences in SPV and effect of SPV on gait function remain unclear. Since SPV affects the degree of flexion and lateral bending posture and long-term prognosis of PD, factors affecting SPV in patients with PD should be clarified to improve gait function. Is vertical perception of posture (i.e., SPV) related to gait function in patients with PD? Are there any sex-related differences? The gait and SPV were evaluated in 59 adult outpatients with PD (31 men and 28 women) using five gait (step length, walking speed, coefficient of variation of step time [step CV], cadence, and mean gait acceleration [acceleration]) and two SPV (SPV in the sagittal and coronal planes) assessments and compared between the sexes. No sex-related differences were observed in the SPV in patients with PD. The SPV and gait assessments demonstrated no association in men. Walking speed and SPV in the sagittal plane (p = 0.029), and step CV and SPV in the coronal (p = 0.018) and sagittal planes (p = 0.032) were correlated in women. Postural control can be challenged by breathing. What is the effect of an acute increase in respiratory demand on postural control compared to quiet breathing? A systematic review was conducted. Electronic databases were systematically searched until October 18, 2022 on studies reporting changes in center of pressure (CoP) motion related to an acute manipulation of respiratory demand compared to quiet breathing during upright standing in healthy participants and/or participants with a clinical condition. Twenty-one studies in healthy participants showed that voluntary (not metabolic-induced) hyperventilation or inspiratory resistive loading significantly increased CoP motion, while breath-holding decreased CoP motion, compared to quiet breathing (p< 0.05). Manipulating respiratory rate or breathing patterns did not reveal consistent results. Four studies showed that people with low back pain showed similar CoP responses to increasing respiratory demand (p> 0.05), except for breathing at different rates, whereas they showed greater CoP motion during quiet breathing. The extent of postural disturbance depended on the breathing mode and how it was quantified (i.e., CoP coupled with breathing movement or overall CoP measures). Voluntary hyperventilation and inspiratory resistive loading increased postural sway. For voluntary hyperventilation, this could be explained by CoP motion being directly coupled to chest wall movements whereas metabolic-induced hyperventilation did not increase CoP motion or CoP coupling with breathing. Many children with cerebral palsy (CP) show impairments in trunk posture control, one crucial factor contributing to impairments in gait and arm manipulation. The goal of this study was to test the feasibility of the cable-driven hippotherapy system on improving trunk posture control and walking function in children with CP. Ten children were recruited in this study with average age 6.4 ± 3.0 years old, and were randomly assigned to the robotic group and the conventional balance training group. A custom designed cable-driven robotic hippotherapy system was used to deliver controlled pelvis perturbations while children were sitting astride. Participants from both groups underwent intensive robotic hippotherapy training or conventional balance training, depending on their group assignment, for 6 weeks (3 time/week). Outcome measures were assessed pre and post 6 weeks of robotic or conventional balance training, and 8 weeks after the end of training (follow-up test). The primary outcome measure was trunk control, which was measured using the Trunk Control Measurement Scale (TCMS). In addition, the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-66), self-selected overground walking speed, and 6-minute walking distance were also assessed. The change in TCMS score from baseline to the post intervention was significantly greater for the robotic group than that for the conventional group (i.e., 6 ± 3 vs. −1 ± 5, p = 0.048, Mann-Whitney test). GMFM scores, self-selected overground walking speed, and 6-minute walking distance showed no significant improvement after robotic hippotherapy and after conventional balance training (p > 0.05). Results from this study indicated that it was feasible to improve trunk posture control in children with CP using a cable-driven robotic hippotherapy system. The functional role of intrinsic foot muscles in the control of standing balance is often overlooked in rehabilitation, partly because the interactions with ankle muscles are poorly understood. How does coactivation of Flexor Digitorum Brevis (FDB) and soleus (SOL) vary across standing tasks of increasing difficulty. Postural sway (Centre of Pressure, CoP) and the electromyographic (EMG) activity of FDB, SOL, Medial Gastrocnemius (MG) and Tibialis Anterior (TA) were measured during bipedal standing, tandem stance, one-legged balance, and standing on toes. Coherence of the rectified EMG signals for SOL and FDB in two bandwidths (0–5 and 10–20 Hz) was calculated as a coactivation index. The CoP sway and the EMG activity of all muscles was greater (P<0.05) for the three difficult tasks. Significant coherence between the SOL and FDB EMG activity was found in both frequency regions: 0–5 and 10–20 Hz. The coherence integral increased with the difficulty of the postural task, especially in the 10–20 Hz band. The findings underscore the important role of FDB in the control of standing balance across tasks and its coactivation with SOL. In a more clinical setting, abrupt posture change may be used to determine the presence of orthostatic hypotension, a hemodynamic response with relationships to physical function. Certain gait features and physical function performance are also associated with risk of falling in older adults. However, the extent to which posture change is associated with subsequent gait and physical function has received little attention in the literature. This study aims to determine the effects of posture change on spatiotemporal parameters of gait and Timed Up-and-Go (TUG) performance. Methods. Forty-two volunteers (age 73.21 ± 6.22 years) participated in the study. A custom Tekscan Strideway (Tekscan, Boston, MA.) gait system was used to measure gait velocity (VEL), cadence (CAD), stride length (SL), and percent of time spent in active propulsion (AP). Dependent t-tests were used to compare TUG time, VEL, CAD, SL and AP after at least 10 mins of seated rest and supine rest. Results. Time to complete the TUG was significantly slower after supine rest compared to seated (11.47 ± 0.51 and 10.01 ± 0.33 s, respectively, p<0.001); VEL was significantly slower after supine rest compared to seated (0.888 ± 0.042 and 1.049 ± 0.033 m/s, respectively, p=0.003); CAD was significantly slower after supine rest compared to seated (111.21 ± 2.87 and 120.97 ± 2.56spm, respectively, p=0.001); and AP was significantly lower after supine rest compared to seated (56.87 ± 4.76 and 70.79 ± 4.05 %, respectively, p<0.001). No significant differences were detected in stride length between conditions. Conclusions. Among this sample of older adults, standing from a supine posture is associated with spatiotemporal gait parameters consistent with a risk for falling and aging. Additionally, TUG performance worsens significantly after supine rest. Exercises strengthening foot muscles and customized arch support insoles are recommended for improving foot posture in flexible flatfoot. However, it is not known what the effects of exercises and insoles on plantar force distribution obtained during walking at different speeds. Also, randomized controlled trials comparing the effects of exercises and insoles are limited. What are the effects of foot exercises, customized arch support insoles, and exercises plus insoles on foot posture, plantar force distribution, and balance in people with flexible flatfoot? Do exercises, insoles, and exercises plus insoles affect outcome measures differently? Forty-five people with flexible flatfoot were randomly divided into three groups and 40 of those completed the study. The exercise group performed tibialis posterior strengthening and short foot exercises three days a week for six weeks. The insole group used their customized arch support insoles for six weeks. The exercise plus insole group received both interventions for six weeks. The assessments were performed three times: before the interventions and at the 6th and 12th weeks. Outcome measures were (1) foot posture, (2) plantar force distribution in the following conditions: static standing, barefoot walking at different speeds, and walking immediately after the heel-rise test, and (3) balance. Foot posture improved in all groups, but insole was less effective than exercise and exercise plus insole (p<0.05). Plantar force variables obtained during standing and walking changed in all groups (p<0.05). The superiority of the interventions differed according to the plantar regions and walking speed conditions (p<0.05). Static balance improved in all groups, but limits of stability improved in the exercise plus insole and exercise groups (p<0.05). In daily life tasks of the upper limb, we must make quick corrections with our hands in unstable postural situations. Postural and reaching control mechanisms are involved in the accurate execution of upper-limb tasks. This research aimed to determine the effect of different postural stability conditions on the motor performance of the upper limb in a reaching task with non-static targets. 19 young participants performed a reaching task toward targets that exhibited a change in position (at 200 or 600 ms) in different postural conditions (bipedal-firm, bipedal-foam, and unipedal-foam surface). Performance on the screen (motion time and spatial error), balance (center of pressure displacements, CoP), and index finger movements were recorded during the reaching task. The instability affects the finger kinematic (displacements) and CoP kinematic (displacements, speed, and smoothness) without affecting the performance on the screen (precision and duration). The timing of target change affects the performance on the screen, finger kinematic (speed and smoothness), and CoP kinematic (displacements, speed, and smoothness). Postural and reaching control systems enable accurate hand motions in less stable situations, even in reaching tasks with non-static targets. Background: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) patients may experience balance problems in various environmental conditions other than positional dizziness. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the postural control abilities and the ability to use sensory inputs in BPPV patients in different conditions. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the postural control performance of middle-aged adult BPPV patients in easy and difficult balance tasks, the effect of vestibular stimulation on the maintenance of balance, and the risk of falling, by posturographic evaluation in various conditions. Method: A total of 26 patients diagnosed with posterior canal BPPV and 26 controls were included in the study. Sensory Organization Test (SOT), Vestibular Stimulation Test (VST), and fall risk assessment (FRA) were applied to the participants, respectively. Results: Significant difference was observed in SOT medio-lateral (ML) plane in Conditions 2 and 5 (p < .05). A significant difference was observed in the vestibular score in the SOT ML plane. No significant difference was observed in VST test scores (p > .05). In the FRA test, a significant difference was observed in the energy and gain parameters in the anterio-posterior plane (p < .05). Conclusions: The current study examined postural control abilities of patients with BPPV in extensive external conditions and in both planes, using various sensory perturbations and stimulation. Japan's security policy is changing rapidly, with drastic increases to its defense budget and the acquisition of counterstrike capabilities. While the deteriorating security environment undeniably motivates Japan's defense posture, the speed and extent of these recent changes still present a puzzle. Why was it under Kishida Fumio--a former leader of Kōchikai, the liberal and oft-considered pacifist faction within the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)--that Japan achieved its watershed moment on defense? This article explains this change through the exigencies of Kishida's domestic political survival. It was through his leadership of a minority faction within the LDP, his image as a dove, and support for fiscal discipline, that Kishida managed to find the largest common denominator among competing domestic political forces. Had it not been for Kishida, the speed and degree of Japan's recent transformation in security policies would have been unlikely. Standard plain film medical radiographs often form a valuable line of evidence to identify individuals in large‐scale fatality events. While commonly available, chest radiographs present a challenge that their analysis is somewhat more involved and complex than radiographic records of other body regions. For example, chest radiographs concern subtler morphological varieties of smaller anatomical features across a larger number of skeletal elements in contrast to frontal sinus comparisons that concern a large, (often) single, highly variable void within one bone. This does not detract from or discount chest radiographs as useful identification aids, but it does demand additional prerequisite skills in radiographic interpretation to ensure valid conclusions are attained. When subjects deviate from standardized antemortem (AM) radiographic positions and/or the image quality decreases, the complexity of a chest radiograph comparison is elevated. Generally, the current body of forensic radiographic comparison literature infrequently addresses these more complex circumstances. In this paper, we use real‐world radiographic comparison reference images from a military DVI repatriation context to illustrate these factors and outline some procedures that enable these complexities to be easily recognized and appropriately addressed at case examination. A report for an exemplar case that concurrently highlights multiple factors is presented. For novices learning radiographic comparison methods, this case review saliently demonstrates: (1) why the AM reference radiograph(s) drive(s) the radiographic comparison procedure; (2) why care should be taken for correct positioning of the cervicothoracic junction in postmortem radiography of chest elements. Objective: To assess intrarater reliability of ultrasound‐determined measurements of skeletal muscle characteristics across different measurement outcomes, imaging techniques, and age groups. Methods: 2D ultrasound images (B‐mode) of the quadriceps were obtained from young (26 ± 4 year, n = 8 M, 8 F) and older (70 ± 7 year, n = 7 M, 5 F) adults on two occasions, separated by 6 ± 3 days. With participants in both standing and supine postures, images were collected from five anatomical sites along the anterior (two sites) and lateral (three sites) compartments of the thigh corresponding to 56%, 39%, and 22% (lateral only) of femur length. Images were analysed for muscle thickness, pennation angle, and echogenicity. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were used to assess reliability. Results: Muscle thickness values were higher (p < 0.05) on images collected in the stand versus supine posture only for muscles of the anterior compartment, independent of age. Echogenicity values were higher (p < 0.05) in the vastus intermedius on images collected in the supine versus stand posture only in older adults. Pennation angle values were not impacted by imaging posture (p > 0.05). ICC values for thickness, echogenicity, and pennation angle were generally higher for analyses conducted on images collected in the supine versus stand posture. Imaging posture generated a greater difference in ICC values in the lateral versus anterior muscles and in older versus younger participants. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that participant posture during imaging impacts the absolute values and intrarater reliability of ultrasound‐determined muscle characteristics in a muscle‐specific fashion, and this effect is greater in older compared to younger individuals. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of posture changes on vascular compliance in intracranial (brain) versus extracranial vascular beds (forearm). Eighteen young adults (nine females) performed a supine-to-seated-to-standing protocol involving 5 min of rest in each position. Continuous blood pressure, middle cerebral artery (MCA) blood velocity, and brachial artery blood velocity were recorded at each posture. Three to five consecutive steady-state cardiac cycles at each posture were analyzed by a four-element lumped parameter modified Windkessel model to calculate vascular compliance. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) increased from supine to seated (76(9) vs. 81(12) mmHg; P = 0.006) and from supine to standing (76(9) vs. 82(13) mmHg; P = 0.034). Mean blood flow was greater in the MCA relative to the forearm (forearm: 40(5) mL·min−1, MCA: 224(17) mL·min−1; main effect P < 0.001). Conversely, vascular resistance (forearm: 3.25(0.50) mmHg−1·mL·min−1, brain: 0.36(0.04) mmHg−1·mL·min−1; main effect P < 0.001) and compliance (forearm: 0.010(0.001) mL·min−1·mmHg−1, brain: 0.005(0.001) mL·min−1·mmHg−1; main effect P = 0.001) were greater in the forearm compared to the brain. Significant main effects of posture were observed with decreasing values in upright positions for mean blood flow (P = 0.001) in both vascular beds, but not for resistance (P = 0.163) or compliance (P = 0.385). There were no significant interaction effects between vascular bed and posture for mean flow (P = 0.057), resistance (P = 0.258), or compliance (P = 0.329). Instinctive response was produced for protecting drivers from injury when facing incoming collisions. This study investigated the influence of instinctive response on lower extremity and knee airbag parameters. The change of posture, musculoskeletal characteristic and vehicle control parameters resulting from instinctive response were introduced in injury analysis. The key parameters of knee airbag were optimized based on a multi-object optimization algorithm of response surface method and NSGA-II. Results showed that the increased influence of musculoskeletal characteristic happened when the emergency level varied little. Injury in some cases might increase resulting from the early contact between airbag and lower extremity. It decreased in different levels after the optimization of parameters, with maximum 20%. Aims: To investigate how a change in body position with light‐intensity physical activity (PA) 'snacks' (LIPAS, alternate sitting and standing, walking or standing continuously) compared with uninterrupted prolonged sitting affects glucose metabolism and heart rate variability (HRV) parameters in young adults with overweight and obesity. Materials and Methods: We conducted a four‐arm randomized controlled crossover trial. The following conditions were tested during an 8‐h simulated workday: uninterrupted prolonged sitting (SIT), alternate sitting and standing (SIT‐STAND; 2.5 h total), continuous standing (STAND), and continuous walking (1.0 mph; WALK). The primary outcome was to investigate how a change in body position (alternate sitting and standing, walking or standing continuously) compared with uninterrupted sitting affects mean 8‐h glucose metabolism. Secondary outcomes included the effects on 2‐h postprandial glucose concentrations, as well as on 8‐h/24‐h heart rate and HRV parameters, in the respective study arms. Capillary blood samples were drawn from an hyperemised earlobe in the fasted state and once every hour during each trial intervention by puncturing the earlobe with a lancet and collecting 20 μL of blood (Biosen S‐Line Lab+; EKF diagnostics, Barleben, Germany). HRV was assessed for 24 h including the 8‐h intervention phase, and a home phase by means of a Holter electrocardiogram. All participants received the same standardized non‐relativised breakfast and lunch during the four trial visits. Results: Seventeen individuals (eight women, mean age 23.4 ± 3.3 years, body mass index 29.7 ± 3.8 kg/m2, glycated haemoglobin level 34.8 ± 3.1 mmol/mol [5.4 ± 0.3%], body fat 31.8 ± 8.2%) completed all four trial arms. Compared with SIT (89.4 ± 6.8 mg/dL), 8‐h mean glucose was lower in all other conditions (p < 0.05) and this was statistically significant compared with WALK (86.3 ± 5.2 mg/dL; p = 0.034). Two‐hour postprandial glucose after breakfast was approximately 7% lower for WALK compared with SIT (p = 0.002). Furthermore, significant time × condition effects on HRV parameters favouring light‐intensity walking were observed (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Replacement and interruption of prolonged sitting with light‐intensity walking showed a significant blood glucose‐lowering effect and improved HRV during an 8‐h work environment in young adults with overweight and obesity. This article scrutinizes how speakers in multi-party conversations on visual art use the Swedish connective för att 'because' in conjunction with their embodied behavior to elaborate on their prior contributions that have not received sufficient uptake by their recipients. The present multimodal interactional analysis demonstrates that the general interactional motivations for the use of turn-expanding practices with för att are to manage not fully affiliating responses or a complete lack of uptake. The connective för att operates discursively and marks the upcoming talk as an explanation of some sort. The för att -prefaced contribution serves as a justification and a warrant for a first action, as well as elaborating on or merely reformulating it. The speakers also signal with embodied cues that they are prepared to elaborate on their first contribution. After having deployed depicting or pointing gestures during their first contribution, the speakers do not retract to a full embodied rest position, but halt in an intermediate body position alongside or directly after the syntactic completion of the first contribution. Background: The offender-victim spatial relationship is crucial in reconstructing a crime scene. The study aims to evaluate the spatial relationship of performing slashing attacks on a dummy using a Chinese kitchen knife, and thus to establish a scientific basis for crime scene reconstruction. Methods: Twenty-four participants (12 males and 12 females) slashed a dummy's neck or chest using a kitchen knife, and the kinematic data were obtained using a three-dimensional motion capture system. The spatial relationships among offender, knife, and victim during slashing attacks were analyzed. Results: Slashing distance and occupancy area are significantly influenced by gender (all P < 0.05), with males having higher values than females. Body parts significantly influence bevel angle, offender and victim azimuth angles, slashing distance, relative slashing distance, and occupancy area (all P < 0.01), with slashing the chest resulting in larger values than slashing the neck. Conclusion: Gender and body position significantly influence the spatial relationships of slashing action. Our data indicate that males stand farther away and occupy a larger area during slashing attacks. When the chest is slashed, the wound orientation is more diagonal, the offender's standing position and slashing distance are farther, and the occupancy area is larger compared to the neck. This study aimed to examine physical therapists' perspectives in conservative treatments of pediatric patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). A cross-sectional survey design was used. A validated questionnaire was distributed to physical therapists, and the responses were analyzed. Preferred treatment frequency was 60 minutes (53.8%), twice weekly (41.5%), over 3 to 5 months (44.6%). Top 3 clinical interventions were core and trunk stability enhancement (90.8%), abdominal strengthening (83.1%), and postural correction (80.0%). Top 3 therapeutic goal-setting parameters were activity-based (78.5%), quality-of-life measure-based (56.9%), and participation-based (50.8%). The most common quality-of-life survey used was Oswestry low back pain disability questionnaire (15.6%) followed by Scoliosis Research Society-22 instrument (12.5%). According to our data, physical therapists believe that pediatric patients with AIS can benefit with addressing core and trunk stability, a 60-minute per session, twice weekly, over 3 to 5 months based on activity-based goal-setting and quality-of-life measures using Oswestry questionnaire. Background: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is an adverse effect of frequently used chemotherapy agents in cancer treatment. It is a painful and dose-limiting condition of the peripheral nerves. Exercise is known to limit the progression of CIPN and reduce sensory and motor symptoms. CIPN can be disabling as it leads to loss of balance control, gait disturbances and frequent falls. The study aims to review the effectiveness of different exercise interventions in improving gait speed and postural control in individuals who underwent chemotherapy. Method: Randomized controlled trials assessing the effect of exercise on postural control and gait are selected. A search strategy was performed in PubMed, PEDro, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Data were extracted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Result: A total of 1450 search results were found, and 4 studies were selected. Exercises like endurance training, balance exercises and sensorimotor training are beneficial in CIPN for reducing postural sway and increasing gait speed. Twice weekly sessions for 30 min each for 4–18 weeks are common exercise regime given to the participants. A combination of more than one type of exercise was shown to be effective in reducing CIPN symptoms. Conclusion: Exercise is beneficial in improving the postural control and gait parameters in individuals with CIPN. To compare the changes in outcomes of balance and postural control after balance training exercise and gaze stability exercise in the elderly population with fall risk. After the screening process, 44 subjects were randomized into three groups: Experimental Group A (Balance training exercises, BTE); Experimental Group B (Gaze stability exercises, GSE), and Control Group C (Fall prevention education only). The outcome measures were center of pressure (COP) range, COP sway, reaction time, proprioception, static balance, Clinical Test for Sensory Interaction in Balance (CTSIB), and Short Falls Efficacy Scale (SFES). The pre and post-data were recorded at baseline and after 8 weeks. The normality of the distribution was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Demographic data and baseline measures were compared using one-way ANOVA considering group as between factor and mixed model ANOVA was used to find out the group effect and time effect and time × group interaction effect. Statistical significance was indicated if p ≤ 0.05. GSE had significant changes only in CTSIB 4 whereas BTE had significant changes in CTSIB 4, 5, and 6. COP range showed a significant time effect in the front direction (p = 0.02). For proprioception, there was a significant time effect in the left (p = 0.018) and right direction (p = 0.005), whereas changes in front and back directions were found to be insignificant. SFES showed a significant time effect (p < 0.001), group effect (p = 0.21), and time × group interaction effect (p < 0.001). Development of a technique for measuring the mechanical properties of zygomaticus major (ZM) may aid advances in clinical treatments for correcting abnormal oral posture. The objective of this work was to demonstrate the feasibility of measuring the stiffness of ZM using an MR elastography technique that incorporates a custom local driver and a phase-gradient (PG) inversion. 2D MRE investigations were performed for 3 healthy subjects using a vibration frequency of 90 Hz to test the prediction that the stiffness of ZM would be greater in the mouth-open compared to the mouth-closed position. MRE wave images were acquired along the long axis of ZM and processed using a 2D spatial-temporal directional filter applied in the direction of wave propagation along the long axis of the muscle. Stiffness measurements were obtained by applying the PG technique to a 1D-profile drawn in the phase image of the first harmonic of the wave images and a one-tailed paired t -test was used to compare the ZM stiffness between the two mouth postures (p < 0.05). The mean stiffness and standard deviation (SD) of ZM across the three participants in the mouth-closed and mouth-open postures was 6.75 kPa (SD 3.36 kPa) and 15.5 kPa (SD 5.15 kPa), respectively. Changes of ZM stiffness were significantly greater in the mouth-open than the mouth-closed posture (p = 0.038). The feasibility of using the PG MRE technique to measure stiffness changes in a small muscle such as ZM for different mouth postures has been demonstrated. Further investigations are required in a larger cohort of participants to investigate the sensitivity and reproducibility of the technique for potential clinical application as well as in health and beauty related studies. • Measurement of the change in stiffness of ZM related to oral posture has been demonstrated using the MR elastography (MRE) phase-gradient (PG) technique. BACKGROUND: People with forward head posture (FHP) and rounded shoulder posture (RSP) may experience shifts in scapular position and alterations in the strength of the muscles surrounding the scapula. Therefore, a reliable scapula position and scapula muscle strength test are required to identified scapula problem and provided appropriate intervention programs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the reliability of scapular position measurements obtained using a modified digital inclinometer and palpation meter, as well as muscle strength using a hand-held dynamometer (HHD) in individuals with FHP and RSP. METHODS: Thirty healthy subjects underwent scapular position tests (upward rotation, anterior tilt, depression, and protraction) and strength tests of periscapular muscles (serratus anterior, upper trapezius, middle trapezius, and lower trapezius) on both the dominant and non-dominant sides. The reliability of the measurements was confirmed by computing the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), and minimal clinically important difference (MCID). Test and re-tests were conducted over a period of one week and actual values for each measurement were also obtained and assessed. RESULTS: The ICC ranged from 0.802 to 0.935 for the scapular position tests and from 0.808 to 0.949 for muscle strength tests on the dominant and non-dominant sides. For scapular position tests, SEM values ranged from 0.3 cm to 0.6 cm (protraction and depression), from 1.0∘ to 1.7∘ (upward rotation and anterior tilt) and MCID values ranged from 0.7 cm to 1.6 cm (protraction and depression), from 2.8∘ to 4.7∘ (upward rotation and anterior tilt). Regarding muscle strength tests, SEM and MCID values were in the range 14.4N–27.3N and 39.9N–75.7N, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Scapular position and periscapular muscle strength can be reproducibly measured in healthy subjects individuals with FHP and RSP. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of ultrasound guided attenuation parameter (UGAP) for evaluating liver fat content with different probe forces and body positions, in relation to sex, and compared with proton density fat fraction (PDFF). Methods: We prospectively enrolled a metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) cohort that underwent UGAP and PDFF in the autumn of 2022. Mean UGAP values were obtained in supine and 30° left decubitus body position with normal 4 N and increased 30 N probe force. The diagnostic performance was evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: Among 60 individuals (mean age 52.9 years, SD 12.9; 30 men), we found the best diagnostic performance with increased probe force in 30° left decubitus position (AUC 0.90; 95% CI 0.82–0.98) with a cut-off of 0.58 dB/cm/MHz. For men, the best performance was in supine (AUC 0.91; 95% CI 0.81–1.00) with a cut-off of 0.60 dB/cm/MHz, and for women, 30° left decubitus position (AUC 0.93; 95% CI 0.83–1.00), with a cut-off 0.56 dB/cm/MHz, and increased 30 N probe force for both genders. No difference was in the mean UGAP value when altering body position. UGAP showed good to excellent intra-reproducibility (Intra-class correlation 0.872; 95% CI 0.794–0.921). Conclusion: UGAP provides excellent diagnostic performance to detect liver fat content in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver diseases, with good to excellent intra-reproducibility. Regardless of sex, the highest diagnostic accuracy is achieved with increased probe force with men in supine and women in 30° left decubitus position, yielding different cut-offs. Clinical relevance statement: The ultrasound method ultrasound-guided attenuation parameter shows excellent diagnostic accuracy and performs with good to excellent reproducibility. There is a possibility to alter body position and increase probe pressure, and different performances for men and women should be considered for the highest accuracy.
