This article documents and analyses a phenomenon of collectivisation involving approximately forty artist collectives that emerged in Porto, Portugal between the late 1990s and 2013, with a particular focus on how horizontal collectivism led in turn to new models of citizenship and participatory democracy. I present an overview of historical precedents concerning certain aspects of this phenomenon, especially in relation to Portugal's relatively recent (1974) end to forty-eight years of dictatorial rule. Artists came to play an important role in developing and spreading the democratic values that were subsequently enshrined in the Portuguese constitution of 1976. Recently, the Covid-19 pandemic came to prove that the revolution's legacy is still alive, and the constitutional principles are still orienting the Portuguese artists. Today's growing neoliberalisation of democracy raises the question of how the Portuguese constitution remains the main guarantor of the citizen's most fundamental right to participatory democracy and to be more active citizens. This study draws upon cognitive maps and in-depth interviews with 15 unemployed women residing in a Portuguese social housing neighborhood (Bairro de Contumil) to explore how affects influence subjective neighborhood constructions. Despite Bairro de Contumil's visible disconnection from its surroundings, its residents perceive its boundaries differently. The mental maps varied substantially, and none of the participants limited their neighborhood definition to the social housing area. In spite of this diversity, all participants used their habitual use of space and relationships as the main criteria for defining the neighborhood's boundaries, both of which are strongly connected to their affects. In the postwar, Portugal, entering its second decade under dictatorship and although not being directly involved in the war, witnessed the promotion of mass “social” housing. Portuguese architects were allowed a creative platform for the reinvention of housing typologies, urban forms and ideas in dialogue with central Europe. Fernando Távora was one of the architects engaged in this process early in his career as council architect at Porto, and designing one of very few examples of modernist housing in Ramalde. This article examines this early work by Távora as a grounding moment in Portuguese modern architecture after the war, situating Ramalde in the geography of Porto’s postwar urban changes. Using the method of derive as a form of critical geographical analysis, the article combines archival research with formal and environmental analysis of the built environment of Ramalde. Although Távora’s eminent career is more commonly referred to later works, this article argues that Ramalde’s housing plan, entangled in the dictatorship’s working of welfare with control, opens the discussion to alternative readings of postwar modern architecture in Portugal, while contributing to debates about the parallel development of modernism and European political identity in the postwar.

This article examines how the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach (Unesco, 2011) focusing on heritage values contributes to the heritagization of “invisible” categories (Barthelemy and Istasse, 2022; Zamant, 2019) of which only “traces” remain (Veschambre, 2008). The aim is to understand the transition towards a heritage that integrates alterity in Porto, Portugal, through the example of Calçada das Carquejeiras, a place situated on the edge of the Unesco World Heritage site. Based on the historic urban landscape approach, the analysis focuses on three key concepts: narrative, co-presence and personal experience. This methodology contributes to a critical analysis of the process of the enhancement of a landscape heritage by a qualitative study combining semi-structured interviews, photographic analysis, press reviews, guided tours and institutional information in Porto. This article highlights the fact that in the heritagization of the ‘invisible’ categories of the urban landscape the feedback of the local population requires taking into account what the population says, the engagement of associations and institutional perspectives. It also highlights the fact that the multiplication of categories does not systematically lead to a greater inclusion of heritage. For this to happen, there is a need to promote mediation and varied and innovative methods for collecting data on the values of heritage landscapes. Approaches aimed at highlighting these heritages could then influence the evolution of normative frameworks at local and/or national level. There has been a notable shift towards more holistic approaches to the landscape, as in the case of the recognition of the history of the Carquejeiras and the adoption of the PUH approach in Porto.

Il presente lavoro propone lo studio analitico della cosiddetta Porta o Arco di Santa Maria, ovvero uno degli antichi accessi al Porto di Roma. La Porta, avente pianta quadrata, nasce in concomitanza con la costruzione delle “Contromura interne” dello scalo portuale, nell’ultimo quarto del V secolo per consentirne l’accesso lungo il settore S-E. Oltre ad essere l’unico ingresso monumentale tuttora conservato lungo il circuito murario, è probabile che la porta di Santa Maria possa essere stata una delle porte principali, consentendo l’accesso alla città a chi giungeva da Roma tramite la via Portuense. La struttura mostra una straordinaria testimonianza di continuità della vita all’interno della città di Porto che va ben oltre il VI secolo d.C., attestato anche dalla rilevazione di una serie di restauri che, in periodi naturalmente differenti, coprono un arco temporale che va praticamente dalla sua realizzazione nel V secolo d.C. fino agli interventi del XV secolo d.C.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo estudar a demografia da cidade do Porto na década de 1520. A fonte utilizada é primordialmente “O Livro da Abertura da Rua das Flores” (de 1521-1527), que divide os habitantes em diversas categorias fiscais e por circunscrições; iremos assim quantificar os habitantes de acordo com essas categorizações, detetando disparidades de riqueza nas diferentes partes da cidade, o peso da finta para o orçamento doméstico e finalmente calcular o crescimento da população desde 1438. The central objective of this article is to recognize and limit some generalities regarding port operations along the brazilian coast during the 19th century. Keeping the local, regional and natural/ historical specificities of each port, we weave some points of contact between the big national ports beyond the commercial and cultural exchange networks. In post-pandemic, climate-changing societies, the presence of urban greenspace assumes paramount functions, at the same time that socio-economic crises and shocks augment vulnerabilities and insecurities. The recent literature on environmental criminology argues that the geography of crime is not random, and that the presence of greenery, due to its impact on well-being and the environment, can have positive associations with feeling safe; although the opposite effect can occur if spaces are not properly designed or maintained. In this paper, the case study of Porto, Portugal, is presented; one of the municipalities with higher crime rates, that also pledged to double the available greenspace in the near future. As a way to support decision-making, the aim of this study was to present an overall exploratory diagnosis of how street crime patterns, of different typologies, spatially co-exist with greenspaces. Using a 10-year street crime dataset at the segment level, descriptive quantitative methods with the support of GIS have been applied to plot crime's spatial distribution over time, as well as the walking accessibility to greenspaces. The results confirm crime's geographical non-randomness, with distinct categories occupying specific locations, even though there was a consistently proportional distribution in the different distance bands. On the contrary, the cumulative effect of the proximity to greenspaces was variable. Almost half of the city's street crimes (46%) were within a 5 min walking distance of greenspaces, but they were much closer to smaller inner-city urban gardens, with higher densities of street crimes (hot spots), than to larger municipal parks, where lower densities (cold spots) were seen. O Brasil tem segunda maior produção mundial de celulose e responde por 15,6% das exportações mundiais, porém o processo de exportação está sujeito a vários riscos nas operações que podem causar acidentes aos trabalhadores. O objetivo desse estudo é identificar os riscos nas operações logísticas de exportação de celulose que podem contribuir para a ocorrência de acidentes entre os colaboradores. Através de um estudo de campo em um terminal de celulose no Porto de Santos, que é o maior porto exportador de celulose do Brasil, observou-se as funções, atividades e os pontos críticos que contribuem para a ocorrência de acidentes durante as operações de descarregamento e armazenamento de celulose.

The transformations that took place in the historic centres of Lisbon and Porto due to the tourist boom could not have failed to fascinate the Portuguese media, becoming a fertile ground for the debate of ideas that, between 2014 and the end of 2019, followed all the incidents of two cities that, from peaceful urban centres, became cities heading towards tourist overcrowding. In order to approach the documentary corpus consisting of 120 texts published in the Portuguese media in the period above, our study took content analysis as theoretical-methodological support. Seeking to frame some theories that intend to explain the intolerance towards the predominant tourist model in many urban destinations and taking into account the opinions expressed in the texts under analysis regarding the perceptions of the residents of these cities in a context of overtourism, this paper demonstrates the existence of antagonistic positions between a certain intelligentsia linked to urbanism, ecology and sustainable tourism that actively opine in the media discourse and a set of institutional actors with high responsibilities in the areas of tourism and municipal management.

The goal of this article is to analyse the relationship between rental income and capitalisation rates when real estate value is assessed in parishes of the Lisbon and Porto municipalities. Based on housing market values in euros per square metre during the 2006-2009 period, the income approach was used to compare the two main types of apartments (i.e. B2, or two-bedroom, and B1, or one-bedroom) in Lisbon and Porto. We used the capital asset pricing model to calculate the risk measure. The cluster analysis was used to group the Lisbon and Porto parishes according to their rental income and capitalisation rates. Regressions were used to model both geographical markets. Clear differences were found between Porto and Lisbon, the results being more robust for the Porto municipality in regard to B2 apartments. Moreover, rental income is inversely proportional to capitalisation rates for B1 apartments for Porto parishes, which means that there is an initial overinvestment.

Cities experience rapid growth and transformation. Over the past decades, change has been particularly intense and complex, associated to globalization, spatial compression and temporal acceleration. Within this context, the EU funds introduced new urban rehabilitation dynamics that made a city center more and more attractive. This, alongside the growth of international tourism, has increased the number of city users, which has furthered the discussion on the relation between the physical, economic, social and environmental intervention of the city, as well as the debates on the positive and negative impacts of tourism in cities. With that in mind, we look at the intense change that occurred in the city of Porto, Portugal, in the period from an intense economic crisis to the COVID-19 confinement. We consider changes in buildings, retail and policies to conclude that a neoliberal attitude favoured a tourism-led and sustainability blind gentrification. Based on a survey and analysis of 50 urban rehabilitation initiatives in downtown Porto and on the analysis of recent public policies, we discuss the relation between urban rehabilitation and tourism in Porto, and therefore the effectiveness of public policies and its contribution to sustainable urban development.
