Investigated as a non conventional source of historical infomation, popular music tells the sense of place, exploring the identity as a representation. Often songs show more than their authors or interpreters meant to transmit, and that's how they become archives of memory. In Turin, an emblematic example of place told by songs is the area of Porta Palazzo, the biggest open air market in Europe, a true melting pot of cultures and identities. During the last 40 years, that complex and multifaceted ecosystem turning around Porta Pila market has been the subject of many a song, such as those of Roberto Balocco and Gipo Farassino, Federico Sirianni, Gianmaria Testa, the Mau Mau band.
