Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are a group of compounds formed during the Maillard reaction, which can have adverse effects. This study aims to investigate the formation of fluorescent AGEs using the response surface method (RSM). Factors such as protein type ((whey protein, 2.0, 3.5, and 5.0% w/v) and casein (1.0, 2.0, and 3.0% w/v)), sugar type ((glucose and fructose (0.2, 0.6, and 1.0 M) and lactose (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 M)), and pomegranate peel extract (PPE, 250.0, 500.0, and 750.0 ppm) along with their interactions are analyzed. The results of this study showed that, the type of protein, type of sugar, and concentration of phenolic extract from pomegranate peel were effective in preventing the formation of AGEs, and the pomegranate peel extract was able to effectively prevent glycation reaction (specially at 750.0 ppm). According to the results, protein type and concentration significantly influence AGEs formation. The inhibitory activity of the extract in the model system containing casein was lower than system containing whey protein, and overall, the inhibitory power decreased with an increase in protein concentration. By changing the type of sugar present in the model system, the inhibitory behavior of the pomegranate peel extract became complex, showing increased, decreased, or no effect in some cases. In the last two decades, nanomaterials have received much attention for the treatment of multidrug-resistant microbes that threaten human health. In the current study, the novelty and scientific significance concentrated on the biogenic synthesis of bimetallic silver-zinc oxide nanoparticles (Ag-ZnO NPs) using pomegranate peel extract (PPE) for the first time. The new constructed bimetallic Ag-ZnO NPs possessed the synergistic activity at a low concentration to avoid toxicity and elevate the superior potential. UV-Vis. characterization illustrated that Ag-ZnO NPs were small in size (15.8 nm), which was observed at 395.0 nm. The SEM image of Ag-ZnO NPs, incorporated with PPE, exhibited uniform Ag-ZnO NP surfaces with a clear surface appearance. It can be detected that Ag-ZnO NPs were isolated typically as a rounded particle across the PPE, which showed as brilliant NPs combined and stabilized with the prepared PPE. Results also revealed that Ag-ZnO NPs exhibited potential antibacterial activity toward Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis where minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were 62.5, 125, 15.62, 62.5, and 250 µg/ml. Likewise, Ag-ZnO NPs appeared antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Aspergillus brasiliensis, where MICs were 7.81, 31.25, 125, and 62.5 µg/ml, respectively. Moreover, Ag-ZnO NPs exhibited anticancer activities against MCF7 and Caco2, where IC50 was 104.9 and 52.4 µg/ml, respectively. Additionally, these concentrations are safe in use where results of cytotoxicity on Vero normal cell line confirmed that IC50 was 155.1 µg/ml. Overall, bimetallic Ag-ZnO NPs were for the first time, successfully biosynthesized using PPE; also, they had a promising antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPMNPs) have attracted considerable attention in biomedicine, particularly magnetic hyperthermia for cancer treatment. However, the development of efficient and eco-friendly methods for synthesizing SPMNPs remains a challenge. This study reports on a green synthesis approach for SPMNPs using pomegranate peel extract as a stabilizing agent. The effects of various synthesis parameters, including the type of precipitating agent (NH3 and NaOH), N2 gas, extract volume, and pH, were systematically investigated with regard to the size, morphology, and magnetic properties of the nanoparticles. The results showed that reducing the volume of the extract increased the saturation magnetization of the nanoparticles. N2 gas was found to be essential in preventing the oxidation of the nanoparticles. The type of precipitating agent also affected the size and magnetization of the nanoparticles, with NaOH leading to the synthesis of SPMNPs with higher magnetization (~4 times) compared to NH3. Additionally, nanoparticles synthesized at pH 10 exhibited higher magnetization than those synthesized at pH 8 and 12. In conclusion, the optimized synthesis conditions significantly affected the magnetization and stability of SPMNPs. As an innovative bio‐dairy product, yoghurt was enriched with Spirulina‐encapsulated aqueous/hydroalcoholic extracts of pomegranate peel (PP). Some metabolomics, antioxidative, textural and colour properties of bio‐yoghurt samples were investigated. The samples with Spirulina (YM) and PP (YPA) had the highest lactic, citric and uric acid. The aroma profile of the samples was affected encapsulation process and storage time. The values on day 1 and day 21 were 17.84–17.04 mg/kg for acetaldehyde, 0.98–0.90 mg/kg for diacetyl and 54.42–46.65 mg/kg for acetoin. The sample with encapsulated PP aqueous extract (YEPA) had the highest TPC (2.97 mg GAE/g), and the sample with PP aqueous extract (YPA) had the highest antioxidant capacity (0.36 mg TE/g). The present study describes that bio‐yoghurt enriched with Spirulina‐encapsulated PP could be considered a good alternative for consumers demanding functional dairy products and a holistic approach to a circular bioeconomy. In this study, three different groups of sausages were produced from thornback ray (Raja clavata) without additives (control group), waste pomegranate peel extract (natural group), and ascorbic acid (synthetic group). Biochemical, physicochemical, and microbiological changes of sausages were examined under refrigerator conditions (+4°C), and the shelf life was determined. The best results in terms of nutritional and physicochemical values were obtained in sausages treated with pomegranate peel extract. All sausage groups were spoiled on the 15th day in terms of the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB‐N); however, the pomegranate peel extract group showed a more positive effect compared to the other sausage groups. However, this value was not considered because cartilaginous fish such as stingrays contain higher levels of nonprotein nitrogenous compounds. It was observed that microbial growth was less in the natural group and the antimicrobial effect of pomegranate peel extract was higher than that of ascorbic acid. In addition, it was determined that the pomegranate peel extract group extended the shelf life up to 6 days in terms of total viable count (TVC) and yeast/mold compared to the control and synthetic groups, respectively. This study showed that pomegranate peel extract has a better protective effect than ascorbic acid and it can be used as a natural additive in preserving the quality of seafood products. An environmentally sustainable method was used to synthesize a novel class of biopolymer‐based PVP/ZnO nanocomposites (NCs) with pomegranate peel residue extract as a biosurfactant, zinc acetate as the primary material, PVP as the stabilizing substance and sodium hydroxide as the resolving product. Significant global concerns for human health and the environment are caused by the presence of disease‐causing microbes and toxic dyes in water supplies. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) exhibit exceptional photocatalytic and antibacterial efficacy toward reactive dye and bacterial strains. The microstructure of the NPs was analyzed by employing X‐ray diffraction (XRD), with a size of 20.24 nm. Investigation using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) revealed the appearance of nanoflakes‐shaped PVP‐ZnO nanoparticles with a size ranging from 20 to 30 nm. The mixed composition of the nanoparticles was demonstrated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT‐IR), and an intensity of absorption at 346 nm was seen using UV–Vis spectroscopy. The PVP‐ZnO nanoparticles demonstrated exceptional photocatalytic efficacy, destroying about 90% of the reactive MB dye. The NPs exhibited antibacterial activity against E. aerogenes, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and K. pneumonia, with boundaries of inhibition of 21, 19, 18, and 16 mm, correspondingly. The results indicate that PVP‐ZnO nanoparticles may be efficiently employed for water purification, successfully removing both dye and pathogenic pollutants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Hepatic cancer endures a major health scourge as the consequence of a high incidence of > 1 million cases by 2025. Plant-based products are typically effective in ameliorating health conditions. Pomegranate peel extract (PE) with its high polyphenolic content has anticancer effects against different types of cancer. Herein, we aimed to maximize the PE chemotherapeutic efficacy by loading it in a suitable delivery system to overcome the limitations of PE, to control its release and to achieve liver targeting. Method A nanoprecipitation procedure was adopted to incorporate PE into biodegradable and biocompatible natural polymeric zein (ZN)-based nanoparticles (NPs) (PE-ZN NPs). A full factorial design (22 × 31) was developed to study the effects of the formulation variables, namely pH of dispersion, PE-to-ZN ratio and surfactant concentration. Results The optimization revealed a surfactant-free stable PE-ZN NPs formula with a small particle size of 99.5 ± 6.43 nm, high PE encapsulation efficiency % of 99.31% ± 3.64 (w/w) and controlled release of PE over 24 h. Conclusion Moreover, the cytotoxicity of the optimum formula against hepatic cancer HepG2 cell lines was assessed and attained about a 2.5-fold reduction in the inhibitory concentration (IC50) values compared to the free PE affording a promising green platform to combat hepatic cancer. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of pomegranate peel (PoP) extract on the gill, liver, and kidney tissues of common carp exposed to cadmium (Cd). For this purpose, 150 common carp weighing 65 ± 0.85 g were randomly divided into five groups with three triplicates for each group (30 fish per group). The control group received a standard diet without cadmium chloride (CdCl2), the Cd group was exposed to 0.5 mg/L CdCl2, and the extract groups received PoP extract with concentrations of 1%, 2%, and 4% (percentage of food weight) along with 0.5 mg/L CdCl2 in the water. After four weeks, tissue samples were collected from the gill, liver, and kidney and stained with hematoxylin and eosin for histopathological examination. In the gills of the Cd group, lesions included congestion, hemorrhage, clubbing or fusion of the secondary lamellae, and telangiectasia of the lamellae. The liver tissue of the Cd group exhibited severe degeneration and necrosis of hepatocytes, while hemorrhage, congestion, cellular degeneration or necrosis, and hyaline cast were visible in the kidney tissue of this group. The severity of the mentioned lesions was significantly reduced in the PoP extract groups, particularly at concentrations of 2% and 4% (p < 0.05). Based on the results, it can be concluded that PoP extract has significant protective effects on the gill, liver, and kidney tissues of common carp exposed to CdCl2.

Objective: Osteoarthritis (OA) as a common musculoskeletal disorder is the main cause of disability in the world. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of pomegranate peel extract (PPE) on some inflammatory markers and matrix maloproteinase1 (MMP1) in women with knee OA. Methods: Sixty obese women with knee OA aged 38 to 60 years were included in this clinical trial. The women were allocated into intervention (n = 30) and placebo (n = 30) groups along with standard drug therapy receiving 500 mg PPE or placebo twice daily for 8 weeks, respectively. Three-day food records, anthropometric measurements, fasting blood samples, and physical activity questionnaires were gathered at the baseline and the end of the study. Results: The supplementation of PPE significantly reduced the serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-ĸB), MMP1, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) levels of the patients within the intervened group (all, P <.05) and compared with the placebo (P =.002,.045,.040, and.003, respectively) at the end of the study. The serum NF-ĸB levels significantly increased within the placebo group at the end of the trial (P =.002). Changes in other variables in the placebo group were not significant (P >.05). Conclusions: The findings of this clinical trial indicated that PPE supplementation decreased serum inflammatory markers including hs-CRP, NF-ĸB, and MCP-1 and MMP1 levels in women with knee OA. The improper use and abuse of antibiotics have led to an increase in multidrugresistant (MDR) bacteria resulting in a failure of standard antibiotic therapies. To date, this phenomenon represents a leading public health threat of the 21st century which requires alternative strategies to fight infections such as the identification of new molecules active against MDR strains. In the last 20 years, natural extracts with biological activities attracted scientific interest. Following the One Health Approach, natural by-products represent a sustainable and promising alternative solution. Consistently, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of hydro-alcoholic pomegranate peel extract (PPE) against MDR microorganisms belonging to Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp. "ESKAPE" group pathogens. Through semiquantitative and quantitative methods, the PPE showed effective antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative MDR bacteria. The kinetics of bactericidal action of PPE highlighted that microbial death was achieved in a time- and dose-dependent manner. High concentrations of PPE exhibited antioxidant activity, providing a protective effect on cellular systems and red blood cell membranes. Finally, we report, for the first time, a significant intracellular antibacterial property of PPE as highlighted by its bactericidal action against the staphylococcal reference strain and its bacteriostatic effect against clinical resistant strain in the HeLa cell line. In conclusion, due to its characterized content of polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant activity strength, the PPE could be considered as a therapeutic agent alone or in conjunction with standard antibiotics against challenging infections caused by ESKAPE pathogens. Pomegranate fruit and its components have been used in Ayurveda for a long time in India in the treatment of osteoporosis. A combination of calcium sulphate, titanium dioxide and pomegranate fruit peel extract has not been tried in the treatment bony defects. Objectives of the study was to compare the bone augmentation potential of two bone substitute materials viz. calcium sulphate - titanium dioxide nano composite and pomegranate peel extract mediated calcium sulphate - titanium dioxide nano composite. Twelve rabbits were selected of which six served as controls and the other six as experimental. Calcium sulphate - titanium dioxide nano composite was implanted in the control group and pomegranate peel extract mediated calcium sulphate - titanium dioxide - nano composite was implanted in the experimental group. Hematologic and alkaline phosphatase evaluation was done at 0, 2, 4 and 12th week. At the end of 4th week three control and three experimental group of animals were euthanised and bone specimens were collected for histologic observations. At the 12th week the remaining rabbits were euthanised and specimens were obtained. Osteoblasts and osteocytes were counted at 4th and 12th week. The results were statistically analysed. Blood cells counts and haemoglobin level showed changes at the selected time intervals. Alkaline phosphatase level responded significantly in the experimental group which can be attributed to the bone augmentation potential of pomegranate peel extract. The mean osteoblast cell count in the 4th week of observation was 55 ± 10.49 % for the control group and 89.50 ± 8.29 % for the experimental group. In the 12th week, the osteoblast cell count was 6.67 ± 2.58 % for the control group and 11.67 ± 2.58 % for the experimental group. The study concluded that pomegranate peel extract has definite stimulatory effect on osteoblasts and enhances bone formation when implanted along with calcium sulphate - titanium dioxide nano composite. Assessment of serum alkaline phosphatase can be used as a bone turn over marker and can be used to evaluate the bone stimulatory and formation potential of implanted materials when they are newly introduced. Various techniques, such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, linear polarization resistance, and scanning electron microscopy, were used to investigate the inhibitory effect of pomegranate peel extract (PGPE) on the corrosion of carbon steel in a simulated concrete pore solution containing 0.5 M NaCl and in mortar exposed to chlorides. The results obtained revealed that the corrosion resistance of steel, in the presence of the PGPE, was greater than that of the inhibitor-free system, validating the ability of the pomegranate peel extract to produce a protective layer on the steel surface.The optimal concentration of pomegranate peel extract found is around 500 mg/L, with an inhibition efficiency estimated at 97.39%. It is worth indicating that the adsorption of PGPE was found to follow the Langmuir isotherm model. Furthermore, using the principles of quantum chemistry, the adsorption of PGPE constituents on the surface of carbon steel was shown to occur via donor-acceptor interactions. A plant extract-based inhibitor was developed to prevent steel corrosion in alkaline media. The pomegranate peel extract shows a high inhibition efficiency of about 97.39%. Passive films on the surface of carbon steel with/without pomegranate peel extract were analyzed by SEM. DFT analysis was used to simulate the adsorption processes of the main constituents of pomegranate peel extract. Two possible adsorption mechanisms for pomegranate peel extract were proposed. Pomegranate peel is considered to be a reservoir of biologically active compounds, the presence of which provides anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to the peel extract. Titanium is a wonder metal with broad range of application in all aspects of life. Titanium dioxide is the most common compound of titanium. The nano particles of titanium dioxide have low toxicity, which forms the basis for its broad range of applications including cancer therapy, targeted drug delivery, photodynamic therapy, antibacterial effect, role in bone formation. In the present study green synthesis of pomegranate peel extract mediated titanium dioxide (PPETiO2) was carried out and it's anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant properties were evaluated. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the biological activity (anti-inflammatory, antioxidant) of green synthesized pomegranate peel extract mediated titanium dioxide (PPETiO2). The main objective of this research was to prepare green synthesized pomegranate peel extract mediated titanium dioxide and to analyse the biological activity namely anti-oxidant activity, and anti-inflammatory activity. The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using the bovine serum albumin denaturation assay (BSA), the egg albumin denaturation assay (EA) and was compared with diclofenac as standard. Antioxidant activity was measured using the 2,2 Diphenyl-1-Picryl hydraxylhydrate (DPPH) assay, the H2O2 assay, the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Comparison made with ascorbic acid as standard. The green synthesized pomegranate peel extract mediated titanium dioxide showed antioxidant and antiinflammatory activity. It was directly proportional to the concentration of the extract. Protein denaturation causes inflammation. The green synthesized PPETiO2 composite inhibited the protein denaturation and it was concentration dependent. Contamination of animal feeds with mycotoxins is one of the most serious issues in the world of animal nutrition. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of pomegranate peel extract (PPE) versus oxytetracycline (OXY) in reducing aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) toxicity in rabbits fed contaminated diets. This experiment was done on 48 weaned NZW, four groups (n = 12). The first (AF) served as the control group feed on an infected diet by AFB1 between 0.02 and 0.03 mg/kg BW; second (AF + OXY) received an infected diet by AFB1 and was treated with OXY 200 mg/kg BW/day; third (AF + PPE) received an infected diet by AFB1 and treated with PPE 130 mg/kg BW/day; fourth (AF + OXY + PPE) received an infected diet by AFB1 and treated with a daily oral dose of 100 mg/kg BW/day of OXY + PPE (65 mg/kg BW/day), the experiment lasted for 8 weeks experiment. The treated group with PPE and its combination with OXY concurrent with AF showed amelioration markedly for liver and kidney function. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the potential of Punica granatum L peel in mice as an antidiarrheal and antidiabetic agent. In an antidiarrheal study, different doses (50, 100, 150, and 200 mg/kg) of methanolic pomegranate peel extract (PPE) were administrated to castor oil-induced (1 mL/kg) diarrheal mice. Mice administered loperamide hydrochloride (3 mg/kg) were treated as a baseline group. During the experiment, electrolyte and hematological levels were analyzed, and at the end, histopathology of the intestine was performed. For antidiabetic activity, PPE doses (50, 100, 150, and 200 mg/kg) and metformin hydrochloride were administered to alloxan-induced (150 mg/kg) diabetic mice groups, and biochemical and hematological parameters were analyzed. Liver histopathology was done at the end of the experiment. The study found that castor oil caused diarrhea and had a significant (p < 0.05) impact on hematological parameters and electrolyte levels, compared with negative control group. PPE helped to restore altered parameters to normal levels. Histopathology of positive control group revealed abnormal cell structures, with irregularly arranged villi, unclear mucosal architecture of the ileal section, and nuclei cells were damaged and prone to collapsing. Significant dose-dependent recovery was observed in PPE-fed mice groups. After inducing and confirmation of diabetes with alloxan, all groups, except the negative control group, had significantly high glucose levels (p < 0.05). Levels of C-reactive protein and bilirubin were significantly altered, but PPE and metformin hydrochloride showed potential to improve these parameters. In positive control group mice, liver histology showed microvesicular fatty changes throughout the acinus, reactive Kupffer cells, mid-portal inflammation, reduced portal triad, centrilobular visibility, and well-differentiated central vein with well-formed nuclei. Similarly, significant dose-dependent recovery was observed in PPE-administrated mice groups. These results demonstrated that PPE had promising antidiarrheal and antidiabetic potential. The improper use and abuse of antibiotics have led to an increase in multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria resulting in a failure of standard antibiotic therapies. To date, this phenomenon represents a leading public health threat of the 21st century which requires alternative strategies to fight infections such as the identification of new molecules active against MDR strains. In the last 20 years, natural extracts with biological activities attracted scientific interest. Following the One Health Approach, natural by-products represent a sustainable and promising alternative solution. Consistently, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of hydro-alcoholic pomegranate peel extract (PPE) against MDR microorganisms belonging to Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp. “ESKAPE” group pathogens. Through semiquantitative and quantitative methods, the PPE showed effective antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative MDR bacteria. The kinetics of bactericidal action of PPE highlighted that microbial death was achieved in a time- and dose-dependent manner. High concentrations of PPE exhibited antioxidant activity, providing a protective effect on cellular systems and red blood cell membranes. Finally, we report, for the first time, a significant intracellular antibacterial property of PPE as highlighted by its bactericidal action against the staphylococcal reference strain and its bacteriostatic effect against clinical resistant strain in the HeLa cell line. In conclusion, due to its characterized content of polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant activity strength, the PPE could be considered as a therapeutic agent alone or in conjunction with standard antibiotics against challenging infections caused by ESKAPE pathogens.

Cricket flour was evaluated as an encapsulation material for protecting phenolic-rich fruit extracts (cranberry fruit and pomegranate peel extracts) and compared to pullulan. Electro-blow spinning (EBS) was used as a high throughput technique for encapsulation and compared to freeze-drying. The particles’ morphology was analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fourier transform infrared and UV-vis spectroscopy were used for chemical characterization and encapsulation efficiency determination, respectively. The extract stability and antioxidant activity of the microparticles were studied by exposing samples to UV light irradiation for 30 h. Both extracts were successfully encapsulated in all encapsulating materials. SEM analysis showed that the obtained materials were micro-sized with a shape of capsule. Encapsulation efficiency was between 58.5 and 88.1% for the samples made via EBS and 51.2 to 79.3% for those made via freeze-drying. Encapsulation brought a significant improvement of extract stability and antioxidant activity. The non-protected extracts lost 50% of their antioxidant activity after 30 h of UV light radiation, while those protected with pullulan and cricket flour filtrate mixture experienced a 20% activity reduction. These findings indicate EBS to be a successful technique for the encapsulation of bioactive molecules, and cricket flour to be a new potential encapsulating material candidate that proves best when using a copolymer, such as pullulan.

Abstract Background Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are acknowledged as one of the main factors contributing to chronic illnesses and fatalities globally. Numerous diseases, including bloodstream infections, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and surgical site infections, can be brought on by MDR bacteria. Therefore, a crucial topic of continuing research is the development of a novel and different treatment for MDR microbial pathogens. This work is introduce an alternative method for elimination of MDR bacterial isolates which are causative agents of urinary tract infection among people in Egypt. In our study, we need a novel strategy to combat MDR bacteria by green-synthesized metal nanoparticles (MNPs). That is due to the ability of MNPs to penetrate the cell wall and the cell membrane of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Methods Clinical isolates of MDR bacteria had their antibiotic susceptibility assessed before being molecularly identified using 16 s rRNA, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. Also, genetic profiles of isolated strains were performed using ISSR and SDS-PAGE. Finally, characterized plant-mediated silver nanoparticles derived from lemon and pomegranate peel extracts were evaluated against isolated multidrug-resistant bacterial stains. Results In our present trial, one-hundred urine samples were collected from 71 females and 29 males complaining of UTI (urinary tract infection) symptoms. One-hundred microbial isolates were isolated, including 88-g negative and only 8-g positive bacteria in addition to four yeast isolates (Candida species). A total of 72% of the isolated bacteria showed MDR activity. The most prevalent MDR bacterial isolates (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterococcus faecalis, and Klebsiella pneumoniae) were identified through 16S rDNA PCR sequencing as with accession numbers OP741103, OP741104, OP741105, OP741106, and OP741107, respectively. Lemon and pomegranate-mediated silver nanoparticles [Ag-NPs] were characterized by UV spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, and TEM with average size 32 and 28 nm, respectively. Lemon and pomegranate-mediated silver nanoparticles [Ag-NPs] showed an inhibitory effect on the selected five MDR isolates at MIC 50 and 30 µg/mL, respectively. These common bacterial isolates were also genetically examined using ISSR PCR, and their total protein level was evaluated using SDS-PAGE, showing the presence of distinct genetic and protein bands for each bacterial species and emphasizing their general and protein composition as a crucial and essential tool in understanding and overcoming MDR behavior in UTI patients. Conclusions Lemon and pomegranate-mediated silver nanoparticles [Ag-NPs] were found to have an inhibitory effect on MDR isolates. Therefore, the study suggests that [Ag-NPs] could be a potential treatment for MDR UTI infections caused by the identified bacterial species.

This study was conducted to evaluate the anti-diabetic and antioxidant effects of hydroalcoholic pomegranate peel extract (APE) in alloxan-induced diabetes rat models. We divided 60 rats into the following six equal groups (n = 10): Healthy control; diabetic control (100 mg/kg alloxan); sham + glibenclamide (10 mg/kg); diabetic + glibenclamide (10 mg/kg); sham + APE (200 mg/kg) and diabetic + APE (200 mg/kg). After 8 weeks, kidneys were taken out for biochemical and molecular studies. Following APE treatment, biochemical parameters including malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) significantly induced in the treated group as compared with the control group (p < 0.05). Also, gene expression of GPx (3-fold), CAT (2.6-fold), and SOD (1.5-fold) were increased as compared to controls (p < 0.05). The objective of this work is to evaluate the influence of pomegranate peel extract (PPE) in the behavior of breast cell lines (epithelial and tumor type) and related oxidative metabolism. Fruit-based functional foods have been the target of increasing scientific research for their physiological and pathophysiological properties. Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a suitable example with both prophylactic and medicinal effects. MCF-7 cell line from tumor breast carcinoma, and MCF-10A cell line from normal epithelial mammary gland were used and subjected to different concentrations of PPE, ranging from 1 to 5 mM of gallic acid equivalents (GAE). Viability, proliferation, mobility, and cytotoxicity assays were performed along with the quantification of antioxidant enzymes, namely, catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione. We observed a decrease in viability and proliferation of MCF-7 cells, at higher concentrations of PPE, with no influence in epithelial cells. Interestingly, in a concentration-dependent manner, PPE triggered a significant decrease in migration on both cell lines, with a more pronounced effect in breast cancer cell line. Regarding antioxidant enzyme activity, on tumor cells higher concentrations of PPE decreased catalase activity and significantly increased SOD activity. Regarding GSH and GSSG, we observed different expression levels between MCF-7 and MCF-10A, with MCF-7 presenting lower levels compared to MCF-10A. GSH/GSSG ratio was notably higher in MCF-7 at 5 mM GAE. PPE exhibits anti-tumor effects without significantly affecting normal epithelial cells. The green synthesis of selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) had been synthesized by pomegranate peel extract (PPE). The antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer activities of the synthesized Se NPs, as well as their hemocompatibility, were investigated. Se NPs were characterized by UV–Vis., SEM, XRD, HR-TEM, DLS, EDX, FTIR, and mapping techniques. HR-TEM image represented the spheroidal forms with moderately monodispersed NPs with a mean diameter 14.5 nm. The SEM image of Se NPs, incorporated with PPE, exhibits uniform NP surfaces, and the appearance was clear. The antimicrobial results confirmed the potential of Se NPs to hinder the growth of some tested pathogenic microbes. Results revealed that Se NPs exhibited promising antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus mutans where inhibition zones were 29, 16, 41, 22, and 54 mm, respectively. Likewise, it exhibited antifungal activity where the values of inhibition zones were 41, 40, 38, and 36 mm against Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus fumigatus, and A. niger, respectively. The antioxidant activities of Se NPs at concentrations 250–4000 µg/mL were greater than 90% in all cases. Se NP concentrations of 500 µg/mL or less are safe in usage according to hemocompatibility study. Se NPs had an IC50 of 113.73 µg/mL in a cytotoxicity experiment. Results revealed that Se NPs have promising anticancer activities against MCF7 and Mg63 cancerous cell line, where IC50 was 69.8 and 47.9 μg/mL, respectively. In this work, we have reported the biogenic supported silver nanoparticles over surface of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles by using Pomegranate peel extract. The extract was used as a green reducing agent and an excellent stabilizer of the synthesized Ag NPs. Physicochemical characterization of the as-synthesized Fe3O4/Ag NPs was carried out through electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), elemental mapping (WDX), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The anti-ovarian cancer effects of biologically synthesized Fe3O4/Ag NPs against ovarian cancer cell lines were assessed. The anti-ovarian cancer properties of the Fe3O4/Ag NPs could significantly remove NIH: OVCAR-3‎, ES-2‎, TOV-21G cancer cell lines in a time and concentration-dependent manner by MTT assay. The antioxidant activity of Fe3O4/Ag NPs was determined by DPPH method. The Fe3O4/Ag NPs showed the high antioxidant activity according to the IC50 value. It seems that the anti-human ovarian cancer effect of recent nanoparticles is due to their antioxidant effects. After clinical study, Fe3O4/Ag NPs bio-composite can be utilized as an efficient drug in the treatment of human ovarian cancer in humans.

Abstract In this study, the effects of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel extract (PPE) on the oxidative stability of soybean oil and ghee were investigated under heat conditions. Three extraction methods (immersion, ultrasound, and combined immersion‐ultrasound) with eight solvents (hot water, cold water, absolute methanol, methanol 50%, absolute ethanol, ethanol 50%, absolute acetone, and acetone 50%) were used for the evaluation of the extracts. Ethanolic extract in maceration method significantly (p ≤ .05) showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (95.018%), reducing power (3.981), and total phenolic content (520 mg GAE/g) compared to the other samples. Then, the effects of PPE in various concentrations (200, 400, 600, and 800 ppm) were compared to the synthetic antioxidant (Butylated hydroxytoluene 200 ppm) in the oxidative stability of soybean oil under 65°C and ghee under 55°C for 24 days with 6‐day intervals, respectively. During storage period, all treatments showed a significant decrease (p ≤ .05) in peroxide value, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, conjugated dienes value, polar compounds value, and acid value compared to the control. Except for the PPE 200 treatment, the other treatments exhibited superior efficiency to the synthetic antioxidant in a dose‐dependent manner in accelerated stored edible oils. Based on the sensory analyses (flavor, odor, color, and overall acceptability), PPE significantly (p ≤ .05) preserved the sensory features compared to the control group during the entire storage time. PPE 800 ppm was the most efficient treatment in all analyses, followed by PPE 600, 400, and 200 ppm, respectively. Finally, it was concluded that PPE can be introduced as a unique alternative to synthetic antioxidants in edible oils under heating conditions.

Abstract Climate changes and the related rise in the frequency of excessive weather proceedings have a strong influence on the physical, chemical, and hydrological processes in soils. Recently the investigators confirmed that the use of biological treatments and resources to overcome abiotic stress is fruitful. Thus, pomegranate peel extract (PPE) because of its high efficacy and/or compost application could improve soil characteristics, soil organic matter and nutrient status. This effect may be referred back to the enhancement in the plant antioxidative defense system against stress conditions. This experiment was done to study the influence of spraying wheat plants with pomegranate peel extract (PPE) with and/or without soil compost added under salt stress on some growth parameters and physiological aspects. Wheat plants were grown in the presence or absence of compost in the soil and foliar sprayed with PPE (600 and 1200 mg L-1) under salt irrigation (3000 and 6000 mg L-1). Growth and yield traits were decreased with salinity stress. High levels of PPE (1200 mg L-1) induced the highest values of osmoprotectants (Total soluble sugars, total soluble protein, proline and free amino acids) in both unstressed or salinity-stressed plants presence or absence compost. Using compost in soil for cultivating wheat plants and PPE spraying treatments increased growth traits photosynthetic pigments and yield components. Moreover, these treatments increased the accumulation of minerals content (N, P, K and Ca) in plants. In general, the results of correlation coefficients showed a significant strong positive relationship among measured yield traits and other tested parameters. The correlation between 1000-grain Wt. and grain Wt./spike (r = 0.94**) was the highest. Meanwhile, a strong negative correlation coefficient between Na% and all yield parameters was recorded. Compost adding to soil and spraying pomegranate peel extract is a successful method for increasing wheat growth, yield and improving the nutritional value of the produced grains under salt stress.

Introduction: Present study was designed to understand the role of inflammatory markers and growth factors in later stage of wound healing after treatment with SPPE on wound in alloxan induced diabetic rats. Methodology: The study was performed by inducing diabetes in wistar rats using alloxan at 150 mg/kg, subcutaneously. Pomegranate peel could have medicinal or industrial applications, however, is consideredan agro-industrial residue.The present study aimed to investigate the replacement effect of pomegranate peel extract (PPE) with water (0-12%) and tomato pomace powder (TPP) with cake flour (0-10%) on the physicochemical (moisture content, dough density, acidity, and color), phytochemical (total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity), textural, and sensory properties of sponge cake based on combined (mixture-mixture) design. The obtained results showed that replacing TPP with cake flour increased dough density. Replacing TPP with cake flour and PPE with water darkened the color of the crumb. The moisture content of the samples decreased with the replacement of TPP and PPE. Increasing the level of TPP and PPE resulted in increased total phenol and antioxidant capacity. Substitution of PPE and TPP increased the acidity of samples on 1st day of baking. However, PPE decreased the acidity of samples compared to the control ones during storage time (7th day). The energy and hardness of samples with the incorporation of TPP up to 6% increased but at high levels (>6%) decreased. The results of the sensory evaluation showed that incorporation of TPP and PPE decreased the overall acceptability score of samples (p<0.05). However, the overall acceptance of all samples was higher than the acceptable limit (>3.7). According to the sensory evaluation results, replacing 6% TPP with cake flour and 7% PPE instead of water in sponge cake formulation produced a high nutritional value product with the same sensory characteristics as the control ones. In this study, the experimental material was winter jujube in Dali county, Shaanxi province. Three different biological preservatives-persimmon peel extract at 3% concentration, pomegranate peel extract at 1.5% concentration, and pepper extract at 50 mg/mL-were selected to soak, winter jujube was coated with 1% of chitosan composite solution, with 1% chitosan composite solution as the reference control, water was used as the control and stored at low temperature. The physiological, biochemical, and nutritional indexes were compared and analyzed to provide theoretical basis for the further development and utilization of three natural biological preservatives. The results showed that compared with the control group, all three biological preservatives were able to slower the degradation of jujube quality during storage to different degrees but the effects were different. In terms of the decay index, compared with the control group, all treatment groups significantly reduced the decay rate of winter jujube after 20 days, and the pepper extract had the best treatment effect. Throughout the storage period, the differences in weight loss, hardness, total sugar, and ethanol content among the three treatment groups were minimal and there were not significant differences for each other. The three biological preservatives were effective in maintaining the Vc content of winter jujube but the Vc content in the pepper extract treatment was slightly less than that in the pomegranate peel and persimmon peel treatments. The variation trend of malonaldehyde content in winter jujube treated by the three biological preservatives was basically the same, and malonaldehyde content in the pepper extract treatment was higher than that in the pomegranate peel and persimmon peel treantments showing significant differences in the late storage period. In this study, the efficacy of sodium alginate (SA), pomegranate peel extract (PPE), and SA + PPE were evaluated on fruit quality and regulation of softening related enzymes in 'Punjab Beauty' pear during cold storage (0–1 ºC with 90–95% RH) for 67 days. Results showed that the combined coatings of SA + PPE reduced the respiration rate, mass loss and maintained the firmness and internal quality during storage as compared to untreated fruit. Furthermore, these coatings conserved the membrane integrity as manifested by the accumulation of lower malondialdehyde (MDA) and electrolyte leakage than the sole SA or PPE treatments. Moreover, the SA 2% + PPE coatings delayed the activities of cell wall degrading enzymes including polygalacturonase (PG), pectin methylesterase (PME) and cellulase in stored 'Punjab Beauty' pear fruit. Background: Durable tooth bonding is the hallmark of successful minimally invasive all-ceramic restorations. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the shear bond of ceramics to pretreated dentin with chlorhexidine (CHX) or pomegranate peel extract (PPE), compared to no pretreatment (control), after thermocycling. Materials and Methods: Thirty extracted sound human premolars were enrolled and mounted in autopolymerized acrylic blocks. Occlusal 3 mms were removed to obtain the flat dentin surfaces. Teeth were randomly distributed among three equal groups (n = 10) according to dentin pretreatment; (group I: No pretreatment (control), group II: 2% CHX, and group III: PPE pretreatments). Ceramic discs (4 mm × 4 mm × 1.5 mm) were milled from zirconia‑reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) blocks (Celtra Duo, Dentsply), and cemented to prepared teeth with self-adhesive cement (RelyX Unicem, 3M). All samples were thermocycled for 2500 cycles at 5°C–55°C. Shear bond strengths (SBSs) were assessed followed by statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey’s post hoc test. The significance level was set at P ≤ 0.05 in all tests. Results: CHX-pretreated group showed the best SBS (18.40 ± 1.27 MPa) after thermocycling, compared to control (12.24 ± 1.20 MPa) and PPE‑pretreated groups(5.89 ± 0.24 MPa) with a statistically significant difference among all groups (P ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: In contrary to PPE, CHX-dentin pretreatment kept better SBS to ceramics after thermocycling, providing an access to minimally invasive, yet durable esthetic restoration. Background/Aim: Due to the numerous beneficial effects of pomegranate that can be explained through its antioxidative effects, the aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant potential of pomegranate peel extract (PoPEx) prepared from pomegranate that was harvested in the southeast region of Herze-govina (Bosnia and Herzegovina), through in vitro and in vivo studies. Methods: In PoPEx total phenols, flavonoids, flavonols, flavan-3-ols and antho-cyanins content was determined, as well as several antioxidative assays, including 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay (DPPH), 2,2'-azino bis(3-ethylbenzothi-azoline-6-sulphonic acid) assay (ABTS), iron (III)-2,4,6-tripyridyl-S-triazine complex assay (FRAP), reduction of copper(II) ions (CUPRAC) assay, Briggs-Rauscher oscillatory reactions, neutralisation of OH radicals and lipid peroxidation assay. In vivo studies were performed by administrating 100 mg/ kg of body weight of PoPEx to the rats by gavage for 7 days, after which the rats were euthanised and prooxidative parameters (thiobabrituric acid reactive substances-TBARS as an index of lipid peroxidation, nitrites-NO 2 , hydrogen peroxide-H 2 O 2 and superoxide anion radical O 2-) were determined in plasma, as well as antioxidative parameters (superoxide dismutase-SOD, reduced gluta-thione-GSH and catalase-CAT) in erythrocyte lysates. Results: High content of phenolic compounds was found in PoPEx, which resulted in high antioxidative potential in all in vitro tests performed. In vivo study showed that PoPEx administration caused a significant decrease in TBARS, NO 2-, as well as an increase in reduced glutathione (p < 0.05) in comparison to the control group, while H 2 O 2 and O 2 * showed a lowering trend and SOD and CAT showed an increasing trend in PoPEx group, but without statistical significance. Conclusion: PoPEx demonstrated high antioxidative capacity measured in vitro and in vivo and can be potentially used as a supplement treatment in the prevention of various inflammatory conditions.

Summary: Pomegranate peel is a by‐product rich in phytochemicals with proven therapeutic effects. On the other side, Spirulina microalgae contains high protein, vitamins, minerals and various carotenoids in its structure. This is a study in which extracts of hydroalcoholic/aqueous pomegranate peel and Spirulina are combined in yoghurt medium. Six different yoghurts were produced in which microencapsules containing these two products of natural origin, extracts and microalgae itself were added. During storage at +4°C for 21 days, its physicochemical, microbiological and sensory properties were regularly monitored. Microalgae content and controlled release of phenolic compounds have been an excellent nutrient medium for yoghurt bacteria. According to the control yoghurt (YC), the number of viable bacteria was higher in all yoghurts. Microalgae increased the nutritional value of yoghurts, especially protein. While the protein level was 4.82% in control yoghurt, it increased to 5.48% in YM‐coded yoghurt. YPH and YC‐coded yoghurts have the highest general acceptability with 4.21 points, while YM‐coded yoghurt is in the last place with 2.79 points. Fenpropathrin (FNP) is one of the commonly used insecticides in agriculture and domestically, leading to environmental and health problems. The goal of the current investigation was to determine how well pomegranate peel extract (PGPE) could prevent the testicular toxicity and oxidative stress induced by FNP. Four groups of male Wistar rats were randomly assigned: negative control (corn oil), PGPE (500 mg/kg BW), positive control (FNP; 15 mg/kg BW, 1/15 LD50), and PGPE + FNP. For four weeks, the rats received their doses daily and orally via gavage. The major phytochemical components (total phenolic, flavonoids, and tannins contents) detected in PGPE by GC-MS included ellagic acid, hydroxymethylfurfurole, guanosine, and pyrogallol with high total phenolic, flavonoids, and tannin contents. FNP-treated rats showed a marked elevation in testicular levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, hydrogen peroxide, and protein carbonyl content, as well as the activity of aminotransferases and phosphatases. Meanwhile. a significant decline in body weight, gonadosomatic index, glutathione, protein contents, enzymatic antioxidants, and hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β HSD, and 17β HSD) activity was observed. In addition, significant alterations in testicular P53, Cas-3, Bcl-2, IL-β, IL-10, testosterone, follicle-stimulating and luteinizing hormones, and sperm quality were detected. Furthermore, biochemical and molecular changes were corroborated testicular histological abnormalities. Moreover, PGPE-pretreated FNP-intoxicated rats demonstrated considerable improvement in the majority of the studied parameters, when compared to FNP-treated groups. In this study, the effects of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel extract (PPE) on the oxidative stability of soybean oil and ghee were investigated under heat conditions. Three extraction methods (immersion, ultrasound, and combined immersion‐ultrasound) with eight solvents (hot water, cold water, absolute methanol, methanol 50%, absolute ethanol, ethanol 50%, absolute acetone, and acetone 50%) were used for the evaluation of the extracts. Ethanolic extract in maceration method significantly (p ≤.05) showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (95.018%), reducing power (3.981), and total phenolic content (520 mg GAE/g) compared to the other samples. Then, the effects of PPE in various concentrations (200, 400, 600, and 800 ppm) were compared to the synthetic antioxidant (Butylated hydroxytoluene 200 ppm) in the oxidative stability of soybean oil under 65°C and ghee under 55°C for 24 days with 6‐day intervals, respectively. During storage period, all treatments showed a significant decrease (p ≤.05) in peroxide value, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, conjugated dienes value, polar compounds value, and acid value compared to the control. Except for the PPE 200 treatment, the other treatments exhibited superior efficiency to the synthetic antioxidant in a dose‐dependent manner in accelerated stored edible oils. Based on the sensory analyses (flavor, odor, color, and overall acceptability), PPE significantly (p ≤.05) preserved the sensory features compared to the control group during the entire storage time. PPE 800 ppm was the most efficient treatment in all analyses, followed by PPE 600, 400, and 200 ppm, respectively. Pseudomonas is a food-poisoning microorganism that poses a threat to people's health. This study's goal was to assess the variety and occurrence of Pseudomonas species, with a focus on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which was found to be contaminating frozen poultry products during storage in some markets. 200 frozen chicken product samples, including 40 of each type (breast, thigh, burger, pane, and kofta), were gathered from various stores in the Faiyoum government, Egypt, throughout 2022. Pseudomonas species were isolated from a total of 39.5% of all samples tested, according to the findings. Bacteriological and biochemical analyses revealed the main isolated Pseudomonas spp. to be P. aeruginosa (36.7%), followed by P. fluorescens (30.4%), P. putida (15.2%), and P. diminuta (6.3%). Antibiotic sensitivity affirmed the higher sensitivity of the isolates to various antibacterial drugs utilized in Egypt, comprising Tetracycline, Ampicillin, and Penicillin (100%) and being followed by Sulfamethoxazole (86.2%), Chloramphenicol (62%), and Streptomycin (51.15%). On the other hand, Amikacin (86.2%) and Norfloxacin (74.9%) were found to have the highest sensitivity. P. aeruginosa strains that were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were positive for the 16S rDNA unique to P. aeruginosa and carried the toxR (50%) and exoS (30%) virulence genes. Chicken fillets dipped in lemon juice and pomegranate peel extract (PPE) at 5% for 36 hours decreased the P. aeruginosa count by 62.4% and 56.4%, respectively. In conclusion, the current research confirms the contamination of frozen chicken products by Pseudomonas species. Immersion of chicken fillet in lemon juice (5% w/v) and PPE (5% w/v) can increase its quality and lengthen its shelf life by improving its sensual characteristics and implementing a successful approach for reducing P. aeruginosa in chicken products. In order to develop a wound dressing loaded with pomegranate peel extract (PPE), the hydrogel was prepared by cyclic freeze-thaw method using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC) as raw materials, glycerol (GL) aqueous solution was used as the solvent. Subsequently, the chemical structure of hydrogels was analyzed by FT-IR. In addition, the transmittance, anti-drying, swelling, tensile properties, in vitro drug release, anti-oxidation and antibacterial properties of hydrogels were also studied. Results showed that the prepared hydrogels had good drying resistance and could remain intact at room temperature for 72 h. The addition of PPE reduced the light transmittance of the hydrogel, improved the swelling and tensile property of the hydrogel, and made the hydrogel have good antibacterial and antioxidant properties. The cumulative release of PPE in the hydrogel was (67.47 ± 3.75)%, which showed good antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The inhibition zones were (18.78 ± 0.26) mm and (15.11 ± 0.23) mm, respectively. The highest scavenging rate to 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was (93.65 ± 2.27)%. The present study involved characterizing the physicochemical, dyeing, UV-protective, and antibacterial properties of pomegranate peels extract on woven cotton fabric. As a point of departure, the extract itself was characterized using methods such as SEM, TG, DSC, ATR-FTIR, and UV–Vis analyses. ATR-FTIR and UV–Vis spectra were consistent with the presence of polyphenolic compounds that provide a basis for defining the observed coloristic properties of the extract. Coloristic measurements on cotton indicated that mostly yellow to brown colors with good to excellent wash, light, rubbing, and perspiration fastness were obtained. The best results were obtained when the peel extract was used to dye cotton in the presence of Fe (II) and without the need to adjust its pH of 4.06. This dyeing also gave a K/S value (color strength) upwards of 10.3, which is significantly more than values previously reported for peel extracts. In view of continuing interest in identifying natural colorants having dual properties on textiles, fabric samples dyed with the extract were also evaluated for their UV protection and antibacterial properties. UV protection testing indicated that most of the samples gave a UPF value of 15–24, which is equivalent to the category of good photoprotection. However, the dyed fabric did not exhibit antibacterial activity when tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, probably due to deep dye penetration into cotton fibers. Abstract In this study, the potentiality of front face fluorescence spectroscopy (FFFS) for the evaluation of the quality of biscuits manufactured with butylated hydroxytoluene and pomegranate peel extract during aging was investigated. By using the principal component analysis, vitamin A and tryptophan spectra allowed a clear discrimination between biscuit samples according to the nature of antioxidants, while fluorescent Maillard reaction products spectra showed clear differentiation between samples according to the storage time. Clear differentiation between biscuits according to the used antioxidants and storage time was achieved by using common components and specific weights analysis. In this work, we have described the biogenic synthesized gold nanoparticles being supported over Kaolin mediated by Pomegranate peel extract as natural reducing and stabilizing agent under mild conditions without any toxic reagents. Pomegranate peel extract was used as a green reducing agent and an excellent stabilizer of the synthesized Au NPs. Physicochemical characterization of the as-synthesized Kaolin@extract/Au NPs nanocomposite was carried out through electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), elemental mapping, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). In the cellular and molecular part of the recent study, the treated cells with Au NPs-Kaolin nanocomposite were assessed by MTT assay for 48 h about the cytotoxicity and anti-human oral squamous cell carcinoma properties on normal (HUVEC) and oral squamous cell carcinoma cell lines i.e. HSC-2, HSC-3, HSC-4 and Ca9-22. It has been observed that the Au NPs with spherical shape and size were dispersed homogeneously on the modified-Kaolin surface. The significance of this study is the novel initiative to combine the gold nanoparticle with inexpensive Kaolin clay and utilization of them as anticancer agent. The IC50 of Kaolin@extract/Au nanocomposite were 277, 367, 250 and 545 µg/mL against HSC-2, HSC-3, HSC-4 and Ca9–22 cell lines, respectively. The viability of malignant human oral cell lines reduced dose-dependently in the presence of Kaolin@extract/Au NPs nanocomposite.

Background: Pyroptosis is an inflammatory programmed cell death accompanied by activation of inflammasomes and maturation of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-18. Pyroptosis is closely linked to the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DC). Pomegranate peel extract (PPE) exhibits a cardioprotective effect due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of the protective effect of PPE on the myocardium in a rat model of DC and determine the underlying molecular mechanism. Methods: Type 1 diabetes (T1DM) was induced in rats by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. The rats in the treated groups received (150 mg/kg) PPE orally and daily for 8 weeks. The effects on the survival rate, lipid profile, serum cardiac troponin-1, lipid peroxidation, and tissue fibrosis were assessed. Additionally, the expression of pyroptosis-related genes (NLRP3 and caspase-1) and lncRNAMALAT1 in the heart tissue was determined. The PPE was analyzed using UPLC-MS/MS and NMR for characterizing the phytochemical content. Results: Prophylactic treatment with PPE significantly ameliorated cardiac hypertrophy in the diabetic rats and increased the survival rate. Moreover, prophylactic treatment with PPE in the diabetic rats significantly improved the lipid profile, decreased serum cardiac troponin-1, and decreased lipid peroxidation in the myocardial tissue. Histopathological examination of the cardiac tissues showed a marked reduction in fibrosis (decrease in collagen volume and number of TGF-β-positive cells) and preservation of normal myocardial structures in the diabetic rats treated with PPE. There was a significant decrease in the expression of pyroptosis-related genes (NLRP3 and caspase-1) and lncRNA-MALAT1 in the heart tissue of the diabetic rats treated with PPE. In addition, the concentration of IL-1β and caspase-1 significantly decreased in the heart tissue of the same group. The protective effect of PPE on diabetic cardiomyopathy could be due to the inhibition of pyroptosis and downregulation of lncRNA-MALAT1. The phytochemical analysis of the PPE indicated that the major compounds were hexahydroxydiphenic acid glucoside, caffeoylquinic acid, gluconic acid, citric acid, gallic acid, and punicalagin. Conclusion: PPE exhibited a cardioprotective potential in diabetic rats due to its unique antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic properties and its ability to improve the lipid profile. The protective effect of PPE on DC could be due to the inhibition of the NLRP3/caspase-1/IL-1β signaling pathway and downregulation of lncRNA-MALAT1. The use of natural preservatives in the storage of fresh fruits is a promising approach to healthier and more sustainable food processing. The current study was conducted to evaluate the effect of pomegranate peel extract (PPE) and lactic acid (LA) as natural preservatives on the shelf life of Khalal Barhi date fruits. Physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity, color parameters, texture profile, sensory characteristics, and microbiological quality of date fruits were evaluated during six weeks of cold storage (4 ± 1 °C). The bioactive compounds in PPE were determined by HPLC analysis, which showed that PPE is a rich source of bioactive compounds, particularly phenolics and flavonoids. The results exhibited decreased moisture content (from 68.36–68.43 to 62.13–63.11%) and an increased soluble solids content (from 27.16–27.24 to 31.45–33.91%) in all samples with prolonged storage. Likewise, a slight decrease in the pH (from 6.00–6.28 to 4.89–5.29) with an increase in acidity (from 0.12–0.14 to 0.23–0.27%) during storage was observed. Generally, treated samples showed lower changes in moisture content, soluble solids content, pH, and acidity than the control. A decrease in total phenolic content (TPC) (from 8.22–12.36 to 3.19–5.17 mg GAE/g) and antioxidant activity (from 44.11–68.26 to 23.84–38.52%) of all samples was observed with progressed storage, meanwhile, the treatment with PPE significantly (p < 0.05) increased TPC with a concomitant increase in antioxidant activity and maintained higher values of both throughout storage. The results exhibited a decrease in L* (from 54.87–55.92 to 41.68–45.68) and b* (from 36.25–37.09 to 23.59–25.42) values of all samples, while the a* value of all samples increased (from 1.29–1.40 to 2.22–2.43) with storage. Dipping treatment in PPE solution improved the color, exhibited the lowest change in color parameters, and maintained better texture properties during storage. Similarly, sensory properties decreased (from 8.21–8.66 to 6.71–7.21) during storage with insignificant (p > 0.05) differences among samples. Dipping treatments inhibited the growth of yeasts and molds over time, with the lowest microbial count recorded in the PPE-treated samples.
