Nicht nur wegen des russischen Angriffskrieges gegen die Ukraine lohnt sich die Beschäftigung mit den baltischen Staaten, insbesondere mit Estland. Brennglasartig verdichtet lässt sich hier der Aufstieg des Rechtsextremismus beobachten: Mit der EKRE-Partei reüssiert ein Familienunternehmen, das erfolgreich einen nach der 1991 erfolgten Unabhängigkeit des Landes existenten Patriotismus in die Richtung eines xenophoben, revisionistischen Nationalismus gelenkt hat. Der Beitrag analysiert aus estnischen Primärquellen, wie in den letzten Jahren der Rechtsextremismus salonfähig werden konnte. Dafür sorgten etwa öffentlich geschürte Phantomdebatten um eine angebliche Massenimmigration 2015/16. EKRE dockt dabei an ungelöste und unaufgearbeitete Fragen der Vergangenheit an. Das schließt Reminiszenzen an den Faschismus ein. Erstaunlich ist, dass EKRE als Teil der Regierung ebenso akzeptiert wurde wie die Partei auch generell als wichtiger politischer Faktor im Land gilt. Der offenbar in Politik und Gesellschaft anschlussfähige Traum einer Ethnokratie wird in einem Land kultiviert, das vor allem durch die Konfliktline zwischen ethnisch estnischen und russischstämmigen Menschen geprägt ist. Not solely because of the Russian war against Ukraine, a closer look to the Baltic states, especially Estonia, matters. Here, the current rise of right-wing extremism via EKRE can be observed in compacted form: being a family business, the party turned the existent patriotism after the country gained reindependence in 1991 into the direction of xenophobic nationalism. The following contribution uses Estonian primary sources from recent years to analyse how right-wing extremism could become socially acceptable in the country. Virtual debates around the migration debate 2015/16 gave EKRE a lot of ground for mobilisation. More importantly, the party is dealing with unsolved taboos in the society such as the fascist past of Estonia. The embracement strategy for bringing EKRE into power and accepting the party as new influential political power factor indicates a certain acceptance. The dream of an ethnocracy is revitalized in a country which has been shaped by the cleavage between ethnic Estonians and Russians.

Mit dem Begriff wissenschaftsbezogener Rechtspopulismus/-extremismus fokussiert der Beitrag solche (extrem) rechten Organisationen, Praktiken und Diskursstrategien, die sich auf das Feld der Wissenschaft beziehen. Dabei rückt in einer qualitativen Interview-Studie die Betroffenenperspektive in den Mittelpunkt, die ein blinder Fleck der Forschung ist: Wie nehmen Betroffene wissenschaftsbezogenen Rechtspopulismus/-extremismus wahr und welche Umgangsweisen finden sie? Präsentiert werden Ergebnisse zur widersprüchlichen Erscheinungsform von wissenschaftsbezogenem Rechtspopulismus/-extremismus. Neben erwartbaren Phänomenen (zum Beispiel (kultur-)rassistischen, misogynen, antidemokratischen und verschwörungstheoretischen Positionierungen) zeigt sich dieser insofern widersprüchlich, als dass er zwischen Inanspruchnahme von Wissenschaftlichkeit sowie Wissenschaftsfreiheit auf der einen Seite und Wissenschaftsfeindlichkeit auf der anderen Seite oszilliert. Er trifft mit Hochschulen auf Institutionen, deren Strukturen einen kritischen Umgang erschweren, und er wirkt weit über die jeweils konkreten Situationen seines Erscheinens hinaus. Unsere Analysen untermauern die Notwendigkeit, die Bedeutung von wissenschaftsbezogenem Rechtspopulismus/-extremismus in seiner Widersprüchlichkeit über die jeweiligen Situationen hinaus zu erkennen und wissenschaftsspezifische Antworten zu finden, die dieser Widersprüchlichkeit Rechnung tragen - und sind damit eine Aufforderung an Hochschulen und alle dort tätigen Personen. With the term science-related right-wing populism/extremism, this article focuses on far right organisations, practices and discourse strategies that relate to the field of science. The focus of the presented qualitative interview study is on the perspective of those affected by science-related right-wing populism/extremism, which is a blind spot in research: How do affected people perceive science-related right-wing populism/extremism and in what ways are they dealing with it? The article presents findings on the contradictory manifestation of science-related right-wing populism/extremism. In addition to expected research results, for example findings of (cultural) racism, misogynism, anti-democratic and conspiracy-theoretical positions, it is contradictory that science-related right-wing populism/extremism is claiming scientificity and academic freedom and is hostile towards science at once. Sciencerelated right-wing populism/extremism takes place in academia. These institutions have structures that are making a critical approach difficult, whilst science-related right-wing populism/extremism has an effect far beyond the respective concrete situations of its appearance. Our analyses highlights the need to recognise the significance of science-related right-wing populism/extremism in its contradictoriness, to find science-specific responses.

Kurzfassung Eine Reihe parawissenschaftlicher Tendenzen in der russischen Sozialwissenschaft hat zur Vorbereitung des Ukraine-Krieges beigetragen. Neben den Propaganda- und Desinformationskampagnen des Kremls ist eine intellektuelle Deformation der russischen Elite durch manichäische Ideen von Theoretikern wie Lew Gumiljow und Alexander Dugin mitverantwortlich für die zunehmende Abspaltung Russlands von Europa. Spekulative, oft verschwörerische, teils okkultistische und rassistische Theorien haben den öffentlichen Diskurs im postsowjetischen Raum infiziert und ihre Verfechter haben anerkannte Sozialwissenschaftler und Historiker aus intellektuellen und medialen Debatten verdrängt. Dieser öffentliche Diskurs ist seit Beginn von Glasnost vor 35 Jahren zu beobachten und ein Bestimmungsfaktor für den russischen Angriff auf die Ukraine im Jahr 2014 geworden.

Der Beitrag untersucht auf der Basis einer qualitativen Feldforschung die Auswirkungen rechter Orientierungen und von damit verbundenen Kampagnenstrategien, Einflussnahmen und Angriffen auf unterschiedliche Beratungsfelder. Es handelt sich um eine erste Analyse von Expert:inneninterviews, die mit der Grounded Theory ausgewertet wurden. Die sich fortsetzenden Aktivitäten und die Etablierung rechter Orientierungen im Sinne einzelner Phänomene gruppenbezogener Menschenfeindlichkeit verändern die Beratungsarbeit, fordern sie zu mehrdimensionalen Vernetzungsaktivitäten auf und stellen Fragen an die zukünftige Ausgestaltung von Beratung. Based on qualitative field research, this paper examines the impact of right-wing orientations and related campaign strategies, influence and attacks on different fields of counseling. It is a first analysis of expert interviews, which were analyzed with Grounded Theory. The continuing activities and the establishment of right-wing orientations in terms of individual phenomena of group-related misanthropy change the work of counseling and challenge it to multidimensional networking activities and pose questions for the future design of counseling.

Im Artikel wird das sozialpädagogische Handeln mit rechten Jugendlichen in den 1990er-Jahren unter einer genderreflektierenden Perspektive rekonstruiert, wobei der Begriff Männlichkeit und dessen theoretische Konzeptionierung als Analyseinstrument dient. Unter dem Einbezug männlichkeitstheoretischer Überlegungen wird exemplarisch ein genauerer Blick auf eine Interviewsequenz mit einer ehemaligen Fachkraft geworfen, die in den frühen 1990er-Jahren in der Jugendarbeit mit rechten Jugendlichen tätig war. Der Artikel beschäftigt sichmit der Frage, welche Auswirkungen aufgrund des fehlenden Einbezugs von genderreflektierender Perspektiven in die Ausgestaltung der Jugendarbeit mit rechten Jugendlichen Anfang der 1990er-Jahre auszumachen sind. Diskutiert wird, welche Folgen die fehlende Markierung, Auseinandersetzung und (kritische) Bearbeitung von männlichen Inszenierungspraxen hatte, inwiefern der fehlende Einbezug von genderreflektierenden Perspektiven zu einer Entpolitisierung von Männlichkeiten führte und welche Auswirkungen dabei im Umkehrschluss auf die Tradierung von Ideologien der Ungleichwertigkeit sowie auf rechtsextreme Szenebildungsprozesse auszumachen sind. n the 1990 s, the former GDR faced increasing juvenile violence by right-wing youth in many major cities and the landscape. This article reconstructs social pedagogy's approach from a gender-informed point of view while using theoretical concepts of masculinity as an analysis tool. Based on an interview sequence with a professional who worked with right-wing youth and research on masculinities, the social-pedagogical conduct and policies pursued at the time are considered. The article addresses the risk of not defining or examining masculinity based on the studies above. The article demonstrates how the lack of gender-reflective perspectives has led to a depoliticization of masculinities and how this affected the prevalence of ideologies of inequality within this right-wing scene.

Dieser Artikel analysiert und erklärt die Autokratisierungsprozesse in Polen und Ungarn zwischen den Jahren 2010 und 2020 als Verschiebung auf einem Demokratie- Autokratie Kontinuum. Die zentrale These lautet, dass der Wahlerfolg rechtspopulistischer Parteien der Grund für die Autokratisierung ist, sodass die Ursachen des Rechtspopulismus letztlich die Ursachen der Autokratisierungsprozesse sein müssen. Eine Analyse bereits existierender Erklärungsmuster des (Rechts-)Populismus und deren Anwendung auf die Fallbeispiele Polen und Ungarn zeigt, dass sozioökonomische, soziokulturelle und politisch-institutionelle Erklärungsansätze einen Geltungsanspruch für die Fallbeispiele haben und somit auch als Erklärungsansätze für Autokratisierungsprozesse dienen können.

Der politische Diskurs verroht, in den sozialen Medien toben Trolle und grenzüberschreitende Witze haben Hochkonjunktur. Rechtspopulist*innen und fragwürdige Influencer*innen nutzen bewusst sprachliche Unschärfen und ironische Zwischentöne, um das Gesagte im Nachhinein relativieren zu können. Fabian Schäfer untersucht die besondere Aufmerksamkeitsökonomie und die Konnektivität des Likens und Teilens der sozialen Medien, die die Ausbreitung von politischem und kulturellem Zynismus anfachen. Mit dem Konzept des konnektiven Zynismus zeigt er auf, wie aus randständigem Humor Profit geschlagen und mit antidemokratischen Diskursstrategien Politik gemacht wird.

Dieser Beitrag untersucht normalisierende Strategien extrem rechter Influencer*innen in der Corona-Pandemie auf Telegram. Anlass hierfür ist die sogenannte Querdenken-Bewegung, die Milieus von Impfgegner*innen über Esoteriker*innen bis hin zur extremen Rechten vereint und sich maßgeblich auf Telegram informiert und organisiert. Im Digitalen und auf der Straße wird deutlich, dass sich in den Diskursen der Bewegung extrem rechtes Gedankengut etabliert und somit normalisiert. Stark rezipiert werden die Telegram- Kanäle Eva Herman Offiziell und Oliver Janich öffentlich. Aus Perspektive der Critical Discourse Studies untersuche ich, ob und inwiefern die beiden Akteur*innen Strategien zur Normalisierung extrem rechter Ideologien anwenden. Für den Zeitraum 01. 02. 2020-31. 01.2021 analysiere ich die thematische Schwerpunktsetzung mit einem Structured-Topic-Modeling-Verfahren und die assoziierten Posts im close reading. Mit "alternativer" Informationsinterpretation knüpfen die Akteur*innen an gesamtgesellschaftliche Diskurse an. Verschwörungserzählungen und emotionalisierende Inhalte einen die Kanäle und ihre Follower*innen. This article examines normalizing strategies of far-right influencers on Telegram in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The reason for this is the so-called "Querdenken" movement, which unites milieus ranging from anti-vaccinationist to esotericism to the farright and which informs and organizes itself primarily on Telegram. Be it digitally or in physical protest, far-right ideas and messages have manifested themselves as normalcy within the discourses of the movement. Popular are the Telegram channels Eva Herman Offiziell and Oliver Janich öffentlich. From a Critical Discourse Studies perspective, I investigate whether and to what extent the two actors use strategies to normalize their ideologies for a broad range of audience. Over the period of research from 1st February 2020 to 31st January 2021, I use a structured topic modeling procedure to analyze the channels' thematic focus and associated posts in close reading. With an "alternative" interpretation of information and news, these channels tie in with discourses in society as a whole. Conspiracy narratives and emotionally charged content are key elements of the channels and unite their followers.

Livestreams von politischen Ereignissen, wie die Proteste gegen die Covid-19-Schutzverordnungen, etablierten sich als fester Bestandteil der rechtsextremen Protest- und Kommunikationskultur. Sie haben einen wesentlichen Anteil an der Normalisierung extrem rechter Akteure und Positionen. Ziel ist es, durch erste theoretische Überlegungen und darauf aufbauende interdisziplinäre Analysen die Funktion des Livestreams zu untersuchen. Dieser Untersuchungsgegenstand stellt bisher eine Leerstelle in der Rechtsextremismusforschung dar. Es werden folgend Schnittstellen zur Medienwissenschaft aufgezeigt und der Livestream dort eingeordnet. Methodisch erfolgt zunächst eine theaterwissenschaftliche Beschreibung als theatrales Ereignis, gefolgt von einer korpuslinguistischen Analyse zur Funktion des dazugehörigen Chats. Diese ersten Analysen belegen, dass der Livestream eine eigenständige Protestform darstellt, die auf die Beziehungsebene abzielt. Der Artikel umreißt diese neuartige Protestform und bietet Anstöße zur weiteren interdisziplinären Diskussion. Livestreams of political events such as the protests against the Covid-19 protection regulations, established themselves as an integral part of the far-right protest and communication culture. They play a significant role in the normalization of extreme rightwing actors and positions. The aim of this study was to investigate the function of livestreams through initial theoretical considerations and interdisciplinary analyses based on these. So far, there has been no research on this topic in the field of right-wing extremism. In the following, intersections to media studies will be indicated and the livestream will be integrated there. Methodologically, a theatrical description as a theatrical event was conducted first, followed by a corpus linguistic analysis of the function of the accompanying chat. These initial analyses reveal that the livestream is a form of protest in its own right, aiming at the relational level. The article outlines this novel form of protest and provides an opening for further interdisciplinary discussion.

Gesellschaftskritik von rechts hat Konjunktur: Rechtspopulistische Parteien und Bewegungen erklären sich derzeit in vielen Staaten zum Sprachrohr (angeblich) unterdrückter Meinungen. Nicht erst seit der Covid-19-Pandemie ist das Internet dabei zentraler Schauplatz der Auseinandersetzungen. Der These folgend, dass rechtsextreme Narrative inzwischen auch in gesamtgesellschaftlichen Debatten ausgemacht werden können, haben wir Videos der Social-Media-Plattform YouTube auf diese Narrative analysiert. Gemeinsamen Bezug bilden die jüngsten Ereignisse um die Regulierung von Abtreibung in Polen, wo im Oktober 2020 das geltende Abtreibungsrecht für verfassungswidrig erklärt wurde, und Argentinien, dessen Regierung Abtreibung am 30. Dezember 2020 legalisierte. Während im analysierten Diskursausschnitt Frauenrechte und eine liberale Abtreibungspolitik oft positive Bewertung finden, bieten diese Themen auch Anlass hitziger Debatten, die häufig in Beleidigung, Herabwürdigung oder Hass umschlagen. Sexismus, Misogynie und vor allem Antifeminismus können dabei als besonders geeignete Anknüpfungspunkte für rechtsextreme Inhalte identifiziert werden. Social criticism from the right is flourishing: right-wing populist parties and movements are currently declaring themselves the conduits of (allegedly) suppressed opinions in many countries. Not only since the Covid-19 pandemic has the internet been a central arena for these confrontations. Following the thesis that right-wing extremist narratives can now also be identified in debates in society as a whole, we analysed videos from the social media platform YouTube to identify these narratives. Common references are the recent events surrounding the regulation of abortion in Poland, where the current abortion law was declared unconstitutional in October 2020, and Argentina, whose government legalised abortion on 30 December 2020. While in the analysed section of the discourse women’s rights and a liberal abortion policy often find positive evaluation, these topics also motivate heated debates that often turn into insults, disparagement or hatred. Sexism, misogyny and especially anti-feminism can be identified as particularly suitable points of contact for right-wing extremist content.

Der Beitrag untersucht mittels kritischer Diskursanalyse die mediale Bearbeitung des rechtsterroristischen Anschlags von Halle (Saale) im Oktober 2019 in den drei größten Qualitätstageszeitungen Deutschlands. Ausgehend von Theorien der Zivilreligion und des kollektiven Gedächtnisses argumentieren wir, dass Journalist*innen als memory agents angesichts von Rechtsterrorismus im Sinn der deutschen Basiserzählung handeln. Dazu zeigen wir anhand identifizierter Diskursstränge, wie Schuldabwehr, positive Wir-Konstruktion und securitisation von Rechtsextremismus zusammenhängen. Wir argumentieren folglich, dass die mediale Bearbeitung dieses Anschlags gerade nicht dazu dient, politische Antworten auf Rechtsextremismus zu finden, sondern Diskurse (re-)produziert, die eine gesamtgesellschaftliche Auseinandersetzung damit behindern. Employing critical discourse analysis, this contribution examines media coverage of the Halle (Saale) terrorist attack of October 2019 in the three most important daily broadsheets in Germany. Utilising theories of civil religion and collective memory, we argue that facing far-right terrorism, journalists act as memory agents in accordance with the German basis narrative. Examining the lines of discourse, we show how deflection of guilt, a positive we-construction and the securitisation of far-right extremism are interlinked. Thus, we argue that media coverage of this attack (re)produces discourses, which are not suitable to further political answers to right-wing extremism but rather hinder a public debate.

Der Beitrag untersucht im Zuge der Covid-19-Pandemie aufgekommene Verschwörungsmythen auf Verschränkungen von Antisemitismus und Antifeminismus. Antisemitismus und Antifeminismus werden dabei als Weltanschauungen begriffen, welche u.a. in Verschwörungsmythen zu ihrem Ausdruck gelangen. Sowohl Antisemitismus als auch Antifeminismus sind in allen Bereichen der Gesellschaft verbreitet. Die Basis dieses Beitrags bildet eine Untersuchung der Telegramkanäle der Verschwörungsideolog:innen Attila Hildmann, Eva Herman und Oliver Janich im Zeitraum vom 20. Juli 2020 bis 07. August 2020. Die Telegramkanäle wurden frame-analytisch untersucht und gängige Verschwörungsmythen dadurch rekonstruiert. Diese wurden auf ihren antisemitischen und antifeministischen Gehalt und deren spezifische Verschränkung untersucht. Antifeminismus, der im vorliegenden Fall deutlich auf die Diskurse um Abtreibung und Prostitution zurückgreift, wirkt dabei in einer verstärkenden Funktion auf die antisemitische Projektionsfläche in den Verschwörungsmythen. This article examines conspiracy myths that emerged in the course of the Covid-19 pandemic to find out whether antisemitism and antifeminism are intertwined. Antisemitism and antifeminism are understood as worldviews that find expression in conspiracy myths among other things. Both antisemitism and antifeminism are widespread in all areas of society. This article is based on an investigation of the telegram channels of the conspiracy ideologues Attila Hildmann, Eva Herman and Oliver Janich in the period from 20th July 2020 to 7th August 2020. The telegram channels were examined frame-analytically and common conspiracy myths were reconstructed. These were examined for their antisemitic and antifeminist content and their specific entanglement. Antifeminism, which in this case clearly draws on the discourses around abortion and prostitution, thereby acts in a reinforcing function on the antisemitic projection surface in the conspiracy myths.

Die Parlamentswahlen im Herbst in Polen werden nach Meinung unabhängiger Beobachter und Kommentatoren eine besondere, wenn nicht gar bahnbrechende Bedeutung haben, denn sie werden nicht nur darüber entscheiden, wer in den kommenden vier Jahren die Regierungsverantwortung übernehmen wird, sondern auch darüber, ob das seit zwei Legislaturperioden von der rechtspopulistischen Regierung aufgebaute autoritäre System zur Vollendung kommt. Sollte es dazu kommen, könnten dies die letzten Wahlen sein, welche die demokratische Opposition gewinnen könnte.

Hate is being reinvented. Over the last two decades, online platforms have been used to repackage racist, sexist and xenophobic ideologies into new sociotechnical forms. Digital hate is ancient but novel, deploying the Internet to boost its allure and broaden its appeal. To understand the logic of hate, Luke Munn investigates four objects: 8chan, the cesspool of the Internet, QAnon, the popular meta-conspiracy, Parler, a social media site, and Gab, the »platform for the people.« Drawing together powerful human stories with insights from media studies, psychology, political science, and race and cultural studies, he portrays how digital hate infiltrates hearts and minds.

Die neue Regierung in Israel steht politisch so weit rechts wie keine andere vor ihr. Der Erfolg der rechtsradikalen Parteien und ihre Beteiligung an der Regierung sind Ergebnisse einer länger anhaltenden Transformation der politischen Landschaft Israels. Kennzeichnend für diese Entwicklung ist die Genese einer rechten Mehrheit, die mit einer Rechtsverschiebung des Mainstreams und der politischen Legitimierung des radikalsten Segments der israelischen Gesellschaft einhergeht. Der gemeinsame Nenner dieser Regierung ist ein antiliberaler Impetus, der auf eine Neuordnung des Staates hinausläuft. Die Regierung beabsichtigt, demokratische Mechanismen, ins­besondere das System von Checks and Balances, den Status des Obersten Gerichtshofs und den der Grundrechte, zu schwächen. Stattdessen sollen majoritäre Prinzipien gestärkt werden, die den Regierungsmehrheiten kaum mehr Schranken auferlegen. Dieser disruptive Ansatz bezieht sich auch auf den Konflikt mit den Palästinensern: Hier wird ein Sieg angestrebt. Die Integration des Westjordanlands in das Rechts­gebiet des Staates Israel soll unumkehrbar gemacht werden. (Autorenreferat)

The new government in Israel is politically further to the right than any other before it. The success of the radical right parties and their inclusion in the government are the results of a long-term transformation of Israel’s political landscape. One characteristic of this development is the genesis of a right-wing majority, accompanied by a shift to the right of the mainstream, and the political legitimisation of the most radical segment of Israeli society. The common denominator of this government is its anti-liberal impetus, which amounts to a reorganisation of the state. The government intends to weaken democratic mechanisms, especially the system of checks and balances, the status of the Supreme Court, and that of fundamental rights. Instead, majoritarian principles are to be strengthened, placing few limits on government majorities. This disruptive approach also applies to the conflict with the Palestinians. Here, victory is sought: The integration of the West Bank into the legal territory of the state of Israel is to be made irreversible. (author's abstract)

Zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts ist der Aufstieg der Rechtsextremen in Europa nicht mehr nur als Randerscheinung zu betrachten, sondern als ein ernstes Zeichen der Krise der liberalen Ordnung. Die Zunahme rechtsextremer Wähler:innen und die Verbreitung rechtsextremer Parteien, Bewegungen und subkultureller Gruppen steht für eine veränderte politische und ideologische Landschaft, in der die liberale Demokratie zunehmend und offen herausgefordert wird "Rechte Bedrohungsallianzen" als direkte Opposition zur offenen Gesellschaft sind damit ein nicht zu vernachlässigendes Phänomen geworden. Dieses Papier befasst sich am Beispiel Serbiens näher mit den wichtigsten rechtsextremen Gruppierungen und Organisationen während der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte. Auch wenn die extreme Rechte in den meisten Westbalkanländern noch keinen entscheidenden politischen Faktor darstellt, wird die Grenze zwischen ihrer politischen Agenda und den etablierten politischen Parteien immer dünner. Die Internationalisierung des Rechtsextremismus hat die strategischen Möglichkeiten rechtsextremen Handelns über nationale politische Strukturen hinaus erweitert und diesem damit eine internationale Perspektive und globale Bedeutung verliehen. Diese neuen internationalen "Rechten Bedrohungsallianzen" stellen somit vermehrt eine Bedrohung für die Demokratie sowohl im nationalen als auch im regionalen Kontext auf dem Westbalkan sowie über die Region hinaus dar. At the beginning of the 21st century, the rise of the far-right in Europe should no longer be considered as a peripheral phenomenon but rather as a serious sign of the crisis of the liberal post-Cold War order. The growth of far-right voters and the proliferation of far-right parties, movements, and subcultural groups stands for a changed political and ideological landscape, one where the notion of democracy is increasingly and openly contested. "Rechte Bedrohungsallianzen" - "Right-wing threat alliances" as a direct opposition to open society constitute a phenomenon that must not be ignored. This paper looks closer into the most representative far-right groups and organisations in Serbia during the last two decades. Even though the far-right in most Western Balkan countries is not a decisive political factor yet, the boundary separating its political agenda from mainstream political parties is becoming thinner. The internationalization of right-wing extremism has expanded the strategic possibilities of far-right action beyond national political structures thus giving it an international perspective and global meaning. These new international "signatures of the far-right" continue to be a threat to democracy both in the national and regional context in the Western Balkans as well as beyond the region.

Under the motto “God, homeland, and family”—but also by stressing one further important marker of social identity, i.e., gender—Italian radical right party leader Giorgia Meloni multiplied her party seats in parliament from 2013 onwards. After the 2022 elections, she became the first woman prime minister in Italy. Starting from an overview of the figure of Giorgia Meloni as a radical right woman leader, we explore her and her party’s position on women-related issues and their relevance while exploring, in opposition, two different contexts: representative institutions and social media. To do that, we draw on parliamentary data—bills and parliamentary questions introduced in parliament by Fratelli d’Italia—and on Meloni’s public discourse—examined in an analysis of all the tweets posted by her official Twitter account, between 2013 and 2021. As expected, a low saliency of women’s issues appears in all the types of data examined, although some of them are more exposed to the shift in attention caused by the rise of related trend topics. Both Meloni and her party are strong supporters of the “natural family” and make use of women’s issues in claiming femonationalist arguments, especially on social media. However, Meloni and her party cannot be considered as fully “neo-traditional,” as are other similar parties in Europe, but rather as a combination of “neo-traditional” and “modern-traditional.”

The prospect of a new party can significantly change political landscapes. In Germany, a potential new party is currently being widely discussed - Sahra Wagenknecht may splinter off from her party, The Left, to form a new radical party in Germany. Above all, Wagenknecht is known for her anti-immigration stance and could potentially bridge the gap between the right and left by forming a left-authoritarian party. What does the demand for such a left-authoritarian party look like in Germany? To explore this, we examined individual-level data to understand the structural factors that cause people to rate Wagenknecht higher than her current party, The Left. The results indicate that Wagenknecht is preferred over The Left by individuals who are more socioculturally right-wing, critical of migration, and dissatisfied with democracy. These findings provide valuable insights into the electoral potential of a potential left-authoritarian party led by Wagenknecht. In dieser Research Note gehen wir dieser Fragestellung auf Basis von Individualdaten nach. Dabei identifizieren wir strukturelle Faktoren, die dazu beitragen, dass Wagenknecht höhere Zustimmung genießt als ihre derzeitige Partei, Die Linke. Unsere Befunde deuten darauf hin, dass Wagenknecht von soziokulturell rechten, migrationskritischen und mit der Demokratie unzufriedenen Wählern gegenüber ihrer jetzigen Partei vorgezogen wird. Ausgehend von der Annahme, dass in Regionen mit hohem Zuspruch zu Parteien der radikalen Rechten eine hohere Skepsis bzw. Distanz zu demokratischen Institutionen und damit einhergehend eine geringere Akzeptanz der Schutzmasnahmen vorherrscht, prufen wir, inwiefern sich diese Unterschiede in der politischen Raumkultur auf die Inzidenzentwicklungen auswirken. Wir nutzen neben Daten zum Infektionsgeschehen die Wahlergebnisse und Nichtwahlendenanteile vergangener Bundestagswahlen und zahlreiche soziostrukturelle Variablen fur die 401 Kreise und kreisfreien Stadte. Zur Modellierung der dynamischen An- und Abstiegsphasen greifen wir auf latente Wachstumsmodelle zuruck. Die Ergebnisse zeigen hohe signifikante Effekte der AfD Zweitstimmenanteile auf die Anstiege der Infektionszahlen in beiden Wellen – sowohl in Ost- als auch in Westdeutschland. Fur andere im Bundestag vertretene Parteien lassen sich keine systematischen Effekte auf die Anstiegsphase beider Wellen finden. Dazu kann gezeigt werden, dass auch die Zweitstimmenanteile rechtsextremer Kleinparteien und die Nichtwahlendenanteile zu den Bundestagswahlen 2005 und 2013 positive Effekte auf die Inzidenzentwicklungen haben; das weist auf eine hohe Persistenz politischer und demokratischer Distanz in Teilen dieser Regionen hin. The impact of spatial political factors on the incidence rates in Germany Summary In this article we examine the impact of spatial political culture on regional differences in the Corona-incidences in both pandemic expansion phases in spring 2020 as well as autumn/winter 2020. Based on the assumption that regions with high support for parties of the radical right are also dominated by higher levels of scepticism towards democratic institutions, accompanied by lower acceptance of protective measures, we analyse this impact on the progression of the incidence rates. We use election results and the quota of non-voters of past federal elections as well as numerous socio-structural variables for 401 districts and independent cities in Germany. To model the dynamic of increasing and decreasing phases we use latent growth models. The results indicate high significant positive effects of the election result for the far right AfD on the increase in infection rates in both phases – and in East Germany as well as in West Germany. There are no systematic effects on the increase in infections rates in both phases for other parties that are part of the German parliament. Furthermore, it can be shown that quotas for small parties of the radical right as well as quotas of non-voters in the federal elections of 2005 and 2013 have positive effects on the progression of incidence, indicating a high persistence of political and democratic distance in parts of these regions. Ausgehend von der sekundären Viktimisierung der NSU-Opfer, die im Zuge der polizeilichen Ermittlungen als Täter identifiziert wurden, beschäftigt sich der Artikel mit den affektiven Dimensionen struktureller Rassismuserfahrung. Durch die Täter-Opfer-Umkehrungen und die fehlende Bereitschaft zu umfassender Aufarbeitung des NSU-Komplexes schalteten sich rassistische Mechanismen in den Prozess der Trauer ein, sodass diese selbst enteignet wurde. Entlang des Verhältnisses von rassistischer Gewalt und migrantisch situiertem Wissen im Kontext des NSU-Komplexes werden die Begriffe des "Außer-Sich"- Seins (Butler), der wake work (Sharpe) sowie der undercommons (Harney/Moten) herangezogen, um nach Konzepten für eine Politik der Trauer zu suchen. This article deals with the affective dimension of the experiences of structural racism based on the secondary victimisation of the NSU victims who were identified as perpetrators in the course of the police investigations. Through the perpetrator-victim reversals, and the lack of willingness to engage in a comprehensive clearance of the NSU complex, the mourning process itself was dispossessed by racist mechanisms. Refering to the relationship between racist violence and migrant-situated knowledge in the context of the NSU complex, the concepts of being-beside-of-oneself (Butler), wake work (Sharpe), and undercommons (Harney/Moten) are used as tools to explore a politics of mourning and dispossession.

In den letzten Jahren ist eine Zunahme der Nachfrage nach Darbietungen von Ausgestiegenen aus der extremen Rechten in der schulischen und außerschulischen Bildungsarbeit zu verzeichnen. Diese Anfragen werden auch an professionelle Ausstiegshilfen im Bereich Rechtsextremismus herangetragen (Lehmeier 2020: 67). Im Kontext dieser Anfragen hat sich mittlerweile ein Diskurs zur Sinnhaftigkeit sowie Professionalität in diesem unübersichtlichen Feld von Angeboten ergeben. Der Diskurs soll an dieser Stelle in einigen Punkten nachvollzogen werden und umfasst verschiedene Aspekte, wie die unterschiedliche Verwendung des Ausstiegsbegriffs sowie die Heterogenität von Angeboten mit Ausgestiegenen in der Bildungsarbeit. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Vergleich von Qualitätsstandards und Darstellungen zur Bildungsarbeit verschiedener Angebote sowie kritischen Positionen aus Wissenschaft und Praxis. Berücksichtigung findet dabei u.a. der Aspekt der Authentizität, welcher häufig als Argument für die Durchführung derartiger Veranstaltung angeführt wird. Im Anschluss werden kritische Hinweise und Alternativen zur Umsetzung von Bildungsveranstaltungen mit Ausgestiegenen im Kontext von Bildungsveranstaltungen vorgestellt. The current standards concerning the engagement of formers in the field of education are differing in terms of extent, possible aims and basic conditions. Due to the large interest in those formats there is a necessity to add more precision to the standards and to attend to the differences. Criticized can be assumptions of authentity and expertise in respect of the topic. For the formers giving a lecture the publication of their own biography offers an opportunity of redemption. The own history constantly to be told as well as the source of income connected to this narration is inhibiting a reconstruction of individual identity far away from far-right scene coherences and harbor security risks. The long-term preoccupation with existing thematic literature including pedagocial supplementary material together with approaches of experiential education oriented towards experiences and attitudes of students can act as an alternative to lectures and workshops given by formers.

This thematic issue assesses the organisational forms of a broad range of right-wing populist parties (RWPPs) across Europe (12 in total). It interrogates received wisdom about the supposed leader-centeredness of such parties and investigates, in particular, the extent to which the mass party, as an organisational model, remains popular among RWPPs. This introduction presents the aims, research questions, and analytical framework of the issue and justifies its selection of cases. The resilience of the mass party model highlighted in many articles challenges the dominant trend that party organisation literature has identified: a unidirectional shift towards “catch-all,” “electoral-professional,” or “cartel” organisations.

This article examines the organisation of VOX, a new radical right party in Spain. It shows that the party has taken early and uneven steps to build a mass organisation and initially opted for open membership recruitment with participatory organisational elements. Also, the party’s rapid growth and quick entrance into political institutions at different state levels led the party leadership to establish more centralised control and limit members’ prerogatives, though recruitment continued. Centralisation in part responds to organisational needs given the party’s quickly acquired political relevance, but also to the desire of the central party leadership to forestall the articulation of territorial interests, or prevent them from escaping their control. Today, VOX exhibits elements of mass party organisation and highly centralised decision-making in the hands of national party leaders.

This article analyses the formal and lived organisation of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD, Alternative for Germany). We show that the party is exceptional among what is usually understood as the populist radical right (PRR) party family, at least from an organisational perspective: The AfD sharply contradicts the “standard model” of PRR party organisation, which emphasises “charismatic” leadership and the centralisation of power as key features. Instead, studying the AfD’s efforts to adopt some elements of a mass-party organisation and its relatively decentralised decision-making underlines the importance of “movement-party” strategy, collective leadership, and internal democracy—concepts that are usually associated with Green and left-wing parties. Our analysis shows how the party’s organisation is essential for understanding its development more broadly as it reflects and reinforces sharp intra-party conflict. From this perspective, the case of the AfD sheds new light on the relationship between PRR party organisation and electoral success, indicating the importance of strong ties to parts of society over effective internal management as long as demand for anti-immigration parties is high. We conclude that even though AfD quickly built up a relatively inclusive organisational structure, the role of both its leadership and its rank-and-file is still a matter of controversy.

Over the past decades, the Netherlands has witnessed the rise of several influential populist radical right parties, including the Pim Fortuyn List (Lijst Pim Fortuyn), Geert Wilders’s Party for Freedom (Partij voor de Vrijheid) and, more recently, the Forum for Democracy (Forum voor Democratie [FvD]). By analyzing the party’s organizational structures, this article seeks to determine whether the FvD may be considered a new “mass party” and to what extent ordinary members can exert influence over the party’s internal procedures. The party’s efforts to establish a large membership base suggest that the FvD set out to build a relatively complex mass organization. Through targeted advertising campaigns, the party made strategic use of social media platforms to rally support. Thus, while the means may have changed with the advent of the internet, the FvD invested in creating some organizational features that are commonly associated with the “mass party” model. At the same time, however, the party did not really seek to foster a community of loyal partisan activists among its membership base but instead treated its members as donors. The party is clearly characterized by centralized leadership in the sense that the party’s spearhead, Thierry Baudet, maintains full control over key decision-making areas such as ideological direction, campaigning, and internal procedures. At first sight, the party appears to have departed from Wilders’s leader-centered party model. However, a closer look at the party apparatus demonstrates that the FvD is, in fact, very hierarchical, suggesting that the party’s internal democracy is much weaker than the party’s name might suggest.

This article provides a comparative conclusion to the thematic issue on the organisational characteristics of 12 right-wing populist parties (RWPPs) across Europe. We observe that many RWPPs—at least partially—adopt features of the mass party model. This finding illustrates the ideological aspects behind organisational choices: For populist parties, in particular, it is important to signal societal rootedness and “closeness to the people.” It furthermore challenges the idea that there is a one-way teleological movement towards more lean, electoral-professional kinds of party organisation. At the same time, the case studies clearly illustrate that RWPP leaders and executives continue to exercise great power over their members, who are essentially offered “participation without power.”

Scholars have explored the rise of far-right reactionary political parties in Europe over the last decade. However, social movements reflecting similar political orientations have rarely been conceptualized as “reactionary.” To better understand the political orientations of reactionary transnational social movements such as the Identitarians and the Defence Leagues, we explore how and why ethnonational symbols derived from the medieval period are utilized by adherents. This interdisciplinary investigation argues that, through processes of mediated political medievalism, ethnonational symbols are used as strategic framing devices to reimagine an idealized “golden age” of distinct European nations, to assign blame for the erosion of ethnonational identity through multiculturalism, immigration and “Islamization,” to establish an intergenerational struggle against the supposed incursion of Islam in Europe, and to proscribe and justify the use of violence as a means of re-establishing the primacy of European nations.

As they become more successful, populist radical right parties face a tension between keeping their nativist credentials and moderating their appeal to gain new voters. We argue that differentiating party messages to core supporters and the wider electorate allows parties to pursue both goals. We outline and empirically illustrate the previously underexplored phenomenon of selective messaging based on the communication strategy of the Hungarian Jobbik party throughout its lifespan (2006–19) in partisan outlets, press releases and Facebook. Using a dictionary approach, we map the co-evolution of populist and nativist mobilization under conditions of supply- and demand-side changes. Our results show the decline and transformation of Jobbik's nativist appeal, and an increasing reliance on populism. The trend is not uniform; Jobbik relies on nativism as a function of targeting party identifiers or the general electorate in specific media outlets. Our findings show the importance of mapping parties’ programmatic appeal across platforms and over time.

This article presents an analysis of the use of populist framing mechanisms by grassroots right-wing organizations. It brings together the social movement literature on framing and the populist literature to understand how actors build an emergent field of activism in a highly contentious context. Based on the analysis of a sample of 4,574 Facebook posts published by 5 civil society organizations during the campaign to oust Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff, it argues that two mechanisms, reductionism and antagonism, enabled actors to focus on similar targets and diagnostics while maintaining relevant differences when seeking to motivate followers and present prognostic frames. These were key mechanisms used by all the actors, albeit with different contents, depending on the frame task. This article contributes to filling gaps in the framing and populist literatures and sheds light on the relevance of populist communication in the rise of right-wing activism.

In Central and Eastern Europe populist regimes are attracting attention as a result of the traumatic legacy of communism, the subsequent overburdening reforms and exhausting systemic transformation, resurgence of ever-lurking nationalism, regional conservatism, parochialism and cultural chauvinism, and/or as an example of the structural shortcomings of young democracies at the borders of civilization. The subject literature also indicates numerous and universal elements of populist governments, present as well in this part of Europe. Without prejudging the aptness and strength of these various concepts and arguments, this article is an attempt to include in these wideranging themes a particular issue that absorbs conservative populists, namely “childhood” and “children”. While the problem of children in politics has already received numerous interpretations, the importance of childhood in the right-wing populist discourse and politics has so far remained an issue discussed only occasionally. We put forward the thesis that children play an important and specifi c role in the right-wing populist superstructure – they constitute an illusory picture of the nation, an allegory of its renewal, as well as a convenient, though inconsistently used, instrument for achieving political, ideological and propaganda goals. Attitudes towards children can be an important characteristic of populism as such, and should be taken into account in research on the subject. We will illustrate these problems using the example of Poland and the populist Law and Justice (PiS) Party that is in power there now.

Zusammenfassung In dem Aufsatz wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche charakteristischen Merkmale rechtsterroristische Gruppen nach dem NSU in Deutschland zwischen 2011 und 2020 aufweisen. Hierzu wurden als Fallbeispiele die rechtsterroristischen Vereinigungen Old School Society, Gruppe Freital, Revolution Chemnitz und die mutmaslich rechtsterroristische Gruppe S. anhand der Kriterien Entstehung und Entwicklung, Gruppenstruktur, Tater*innenprofil, Auswahl der Ziele/Opfer, Gewaltintensitat, Kommunikationsstrategie und Ideologie untersucht. Der empirische Vergleich zeigt, dass die meist hierarchisch aufgebauten Gruppen mehrheitlich eine rechtsextreme Ideologie, Gewaltbereitschaft, Waffenaffinitat und Menschenfeindlichkeit aufweisen. Sie bestanden fast ausschlieslich aus Mannern und entstanden haufig in Chatgruppen. Dort radikalisierten sich die (mutmaslichen) Mitglieder schnell und entschlossen sich zu teilweise schwersten Straftaten, deren Kommunikationswirkung sich fast immer durch die Zielauswahl (v. a. Migrant*innen und politische Gegner*innen) ergeben sollte. Die realisierten und geplanten Taten belegen, dass die rechtsterroristische Gefahr in Deutschland auch nach dem NSU hoch ist. For this purpose, the right-wing terrorist groups Old School Society, Gruppe Freital, Revolution Chemnitz and the presumed right-wing terrorist group Gruppe S. were examined as case studies using the criteria of emergence and development, group structure, perpetrator profile, selection of targets / victims, intensity of violence, communication strategy and ideology. The empirical comparison has shown that the often hierarchically structured groups have a right-wing extremist ideology, a willingness to use violence, an affinity for weapons and misanthropy. They consisted almost entirely of men and were often created in chat groups. There, the (presumed) members quickly radicalized and decided to commit partially serious crimes, the communication effect of which should almost always result from the target selection (especially migrants and political opponents). The implemented and planned terror acts showed that the right-wing terrorist danger of such organizations in Germany is high even after the NSU. Trump. In einer akteurszentrierten Perspektive, die indes die politische Nachfrageseite und gesellschaftliche Bedingungen einbezieht, werden Transformations- und Interaktionsprozesse der radikalen und populistischen Rechten seit dem Aufstieg des Trumpismus rekonstruiert. Es zeigt sich erstens ein Prozess der Neuformierung der radikalen Rechten, die sich sowohl auf vorgelagerte Netzwerke und neue Bewegungen als auch eine lange schwelende illiberale, „autoritar-nationalistische Revolte“ stutzt, welche durch den Trumpismus und Trumps Prasidentschaft politisch mobilisiert worden ist. Zu beobachten sind dabei eine spezifische Interaktionsdynamik und eine partielle Verschmelzung der radikalen und der neuen populistischen Rechten, wobei sich einige rechtsextreme Krafte von Trump abgrenzen. Zweitens ist ein machtgestutzter Prozess der Radikalisierung gegen das demokratische System der USA zu konstatieren, der im Kontext des regierenden Trumpismus auch signifikante Teile der Republikanischen Partei ergriffen hat. Drittens hat der Trumpsche autoritare Regierungspopulismus Ausbreitungen, Mainstreaming und Legitimierungen rechtsradikaler Akteure, Ideologien, „alternativer Fakten“ und Verschworungsmythen ermoglicht. Trump’s presidency. The transformation and interaction processes of the radical and populist right since the rise of Trumpism are reconstructed from an actor-centered perspective, which, however, also takes the political demand side and societal conditions into account. Three findings stand out: First, there is a new formation and realignment process of the radical right that is anchored in evolving new networks and movements as well as a long simmering illiberal, „authoritarian-nationalist revolt“ politically mobilized by Trumpism and the Trump presidency. Hereby a specific dynamic of interaction and partial amalgamation of the extreme and the new populist right can be observed, although some extreme right forces distance themselves from Trump. Second, there is a power-based process of radicalization against American democracy, which in the context of governing Trumpism has also come to include significant parts of the Republican Party. Third, Trump’s authoritarian populism in government has enabled the expansion, mainstreaming and significant legitimization of far-right actors, ideologies, „alternative facts,“ and conspiracy myths in society. Against the background of these findings, the perspectives of the radical right in the USA after the end of the Trump presidency will be briefly discussed. Zusammenfassung Ausgangspunkt des Beitrages ist die Frage, was die Motive der „besorgten Burger*innen“, die sich in den neuen rechtspopulistischen Bewegungen sammeln, tatsachlich sind. Besonderes Augenmerk wird dabei auf die Situation in Sachsen gelegt – ein Bundesland, das immer wieder im Fokus rechtspopulistischer Aktivitaten steht. Bezogen auf die Selbstbeschreibung „Ich bin doch kein Nazi“, werden drei Hypothesen hinsichtlich der Motivation der besorgten Burger*innen gepruft. Zum einen die „Defizithypothese“, die die Unzufriedenheit mit wirtschaftlichen und politischen Entwicklungen als Hauptursache der Mobilisierung benennt, zum anderen die „Ideologiehypothese“, hier werden verfestigte autoritare, rechtsextreme Weltbilder als Hauptmotiv lokalisiert. Im Kontext der dritten Hypothese wird versucht, den Einfluss ostdeutscher „Besonderheiten“, der sich in den empirisch immer wieder aufgefundenen Ost/West-Unterschieden manifestiert, zu „dekonstruieren“. Es wird vermutet, dass neben Protestmotiven, die sich auf wahrgenommene wirtschaftliche und politische Defizite beziehen, insbesondere autoritare Reaktionen eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Die Hypothesen werden mit Daten des Sachsen-Monitors von 2017 uberpruft. Schlusselbegriffe: Rechtspopulismus, Rechtsextremismus, Autoritarismus, Deutschland, Sachsen, besorgte Burger ----- East Germans between protest and authoritarian reactions: the case Saxonia Summary The article investigates the motivation of the so-called „worried citizens“, who follow the new right populist movement in Germany. The article focuses the situation in Saxonia. Refering to the self-description of the „worried citizens“„I am not a Nazi“ we investigate three hypotheses. The „deficit hypothesis“, which concentrates on the economic and political inconfidence as main reason for the mobilization. The „ideology hypothesis“ focuses on stable authoritarian, rightwing worldviews as central motivation. In the context of the third hypothesis the text tries to „de-contruct“ the influence of East German deprivation experiences – it is assumed that protest against economic and political deficits and authoritarian worldviews are important predictors and trigger authoritarian reactions. We test these hypotheses using data from a survey in Saxonia 2017 (called Sachsen-Monitor). We find evidences for all three hypotheses. It becomes clear, that not only worries are relevant for the rightwing mobilization but that authoritarian world views have a decisive function.
