U radu se analizira i kritički razmatra politička kampanja korisnika internetskog foruma 4chan – specifičnije, s podforuma /pol/ (Politically Incorrect), u svrhu utvrđivanja predstavlja li ona novi oblik političke participacije.

Na samom kraju iznosimo zaključke o odlikama i širem društvenom značaju fenomena političke participacije dobijene primenom različitih metoda u multidisciplinarnom pristupu.

LEGISLATIVE bodies , *REPRESENTATIVE government , *POLITICAL participation , *LEGAL status of minorities , *STANDARDS , *PARTICIPATION - Abstract
In this article we assess existing international standards for effective participation of persons belonging to national minorities in public life, more precisely the right to participation of national minorities in the decision-making process through the work of legislative central bodies (parliaments). At the outset we provide a comprehensive overview of political theories that justify political representation of marginalized groups. Subsequently, we analyze all regional and international legal sources relevant to the effective participation of national minorities in electoral process adopted by the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, and the Council of Europe to date. Finally, we explore how the right to political participation of national minorities is regulated by the Croatian legislation. The methods used in this article lead to the conclusion that the right to political participation of national minorities exists as a right recognized in the international community, but there is no unified way of its application, but different international standards governing this particular right leave it to signatory states to implement it in accordance with their social and political circumstances.

Political participation is necessary for maintaining a democratic political system. The youth population is a part of that system that does not participate in it as much as either institutions or researchers consider adequate. Focus of EU institutions, as well as national and local governments is placed more and more on methods of increasing the low levels of youth political participation. An examination is done of both theory and practice of youth political participation as a part of this thesis. High school debate is also examined as a potential mechanism for increasing youth political participation. Research was done in which high school students participating in debate (N=125) completed a questionnaire about their political participation. The hypotheses about a positive connection between debate and political participation are partially confirmed.

- Abstract
The paper examines distinctiveness of war veterans compared to general population in Croatia according to three important political phenomena: political participation, party preferences and ideological self-identification. Analysis of sociological survey conducted in 2015 shows that there is no difference in the level of political participation measured by voting turnout in 2011 and 2015 parliamentary and 2015 presidential level between Croatian war veterans and the rest of the public. On the other side, war veterans differ from the rest of the electorate, with other variables held constant, in terms of party preferences and ideological self-identification. Compared to non-veterans, war veterans are more inclined to vote for the right and center-right parties and position themselves to the right side of the political spectrum. The paper discusses these differences, as well as its roots and consequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Time, bi se spriječilo narušavanje temeljnih ljudskih prava pojedinca kao i demokratskog sustava., Surveillance capitalism as a new way of functioning of the market economy has in the last decade began to predominantly use social media to achieve its goals. Foremost, social media and its platforms have become people's first choice when it comes to communication, information consumption and shopping. With this, surveillance capitalists managed to control the flow of information and data that users leave on social media while using their platforms. In this way, surveillance capitalists have the power to personalise the data a user sees on social media and control what an individual thinks and does. Therefore, the question arises as to whether such an approach poses a risk to human rights and democracy. This dissertation will analyse - "What are the potential risks of using social media for human rights and democracy?" ". In order to answer the given question, the dissertation, apart from the introductory and concluding chapters, is divided into four main chapters that analyse the set issue. As potential risks, the dissertation identifies the risk of violating an individual's privacy when using social media and the risks of violating autonomy and freedom of expression. Also, when it comes to political participation, some of the risks that the dissertation observes are the risks of individuals encountering echo chambers, cascades and polarisation. Likewise, the dissertation uses a case study of the 2016 US presidential election to analyse the risks that have emerged in the use of social media as a strategy for the presidential campaign. In conclusion, the dissertation suggests that as a recommendation for further monitoring and eliminating risks during the use of social media, one should focus on increasing the transparency and responsibility of companies and other actors who use social media. This would prevent the violation of fundamental human rights of the individual as well as the democratic system.

Young people are often a researched group due to their importance in different areas of society and are often the bearers of change in society. Change requires certain actions which in turn imply participation in decision-making, involvement in various social events, associations and organisations, which offer young people the opportunity to think critically about the society in which they live. It is participation in society, politics, but also culture that is the core of this research paper on young people. The aim of the research was to investigate social, cultural and political participation of young people in the town of Kaštela, by measuring the frequency of participation in various areas of social, political and cultural life. The research was conducted on a convenience sample of 382 respondents, aged 18 to 30 years, with residence in Kaštela. The online survey questionnaire was conducted in July and August 2020. the results of the research indicate a lower political participation of the younger group of respondents, as well as a higher degree of social participation of older group of respondents. Sociodemografske varijable, prijašnja politička participacija i psihosocijalne varijable korištene u ovome istraživanju objašnjavaju ukupno 34.2 % varijance spremnosti na političku participaciju u slučaju društvenoga pitanja zaposlenosti mladih, odnosno 30.2 % varijance u slučaju zagađenja okoliša. The goal of this research was to explore the dimensionality of the political participation construct within youth, and to investigate the role of certain psychosocial variables in the prediction of readiness for political participation of youth. Said problems are examined in the case of two societal issues – youth employment and environmental pollution. The research was conducted via online questionnaire, which was completed in its entirety by 370 participants from 18 to 30 years of age. The participants filled out the following scales: Readiness for Political Participation, Political Interest, Political Self-Efficacy, Political Helplessness, Trust in Political Institutions, and Attitude towards Democracy. The results indicate that one dimension underlies the political participation of youth. Furthermore, in the case of both societal issues examined, statistically significant predictors of readiness for political participation were gender, political interest, political helplessness, and personal importance of a given societal issue. Additionally, in the case of youth employment, education level of the father turned out to be a significant predictor. Sociodemographic variables, previous political participation and psychosocial variables explain in total 34.2 % of variance of readiness for political participation in the case of youth employment, and 30.2 % of variance in the case of environmental pollution, respectively. Moreover, psychosocial variables independently explain 25.6 % of variance of readiness for political participation in the case of youth employment, and 23.4 % of variance in the case of environmental pollution, respectively.

U ovom preglednom radu prikazat će se istraživanja koja se bave odnosom medija i političke participacije u njezinoj minimalističkoj dimenziji i odnosom digitalnih medija i participacije u maksimalističkoj dimenziji., The goal of this article is to provide a review of studies of media effects and other links with political participation in the political communication discipline. It also aims to present what are the challenges posed for the discipline by emerging social, technological and political changes. The focus on the dominant paradigm by the discipline mainstream makes theoretical and methodological approaches harder to adapt to networked, high-choice media environment (Castells 2009, Chadwick 2013, Prior 2007, Van Aelst et al. 2017), but also to changes in social structure and the crisis of political representation. Besides this, it focuses mostly on minimalist dimension of participation, and far less includes its maximalist dimension with broader understanding of political which is becoming common form of citizen engagement. This article reviews research of political communication effects on the minimalist dimension of participation and relationship between digital media and participation in its maximalist dimension.

The main topic of the paper is the analysis of the link between the consumption of politically satirical content and the political behavior of students at the University of Zagreb. The theoretical overview of the paper includes the concept of satire and political satire, as well as forms of political satirical texts. In addition, the connection between political satire and political information and political participation is presented. In the second part of the paper, a study was conducted on students at the University of Zagreb (N = 156) where it examined a link between consuming political satire with the level of political information, political participation, support for democracy and cynical attitudes. The research measured the consumption of politically satirical content, interest in political events, interest in political events through the media, political participation, support for democracy and the level of cynicism. The results showed that there is a statistically significant positive correlation of consumption of political satire with the level of political awareness of information of citizens and the political participation of citizens. The study also found a statistically significant negative correlation between political satire with and the level of cynicism. The link between political satire and the level of support for democracy has only been partially confirmed.

Istraživanja u svijetu i u Hrvatskoj ukazuju na sve nižu političku participaciju mladih, dok mladi istovremeno iskazuju nezadovoljstvo životom i političkom situacijom. Research shows a decline in youth political participation both in Croatia and the world. At the same time, young people express dissatisfaction with their lives and politics. For this reason, it is important to find activities that could incentivize them to be more engaged. It has been shown that debating develops many key competencies in students. Some research suggests that there is a greater intention to participate in politics amongst them. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to investigate the relationship between debating, political knowledge, identification with the group of debaters and political participation. The participants in the survey were members of high school debate clubs from Croatia (N = 175). The study has found that there is a positive association between longevity of debating in high school and the intention to participate in politics. This relationship is completely mediated by political knowledge and identification with debaters. The longevity of debating is associated with bigger political knowledge and identification with debaters, meaning with a politically active group, which is then linked to the greater intention to politically engage. The identification with the group of debaters has a stronger association with political participation than political knowledge, although longevity of debating explains a larger part variance of political knowledge than variance of identification with debaters. In practice, these findings suggest young people, especially ones that have less political knowledge and are not inclined to participate in politics, should be incentivized to join debate clubs or similar activities.

The article is an effort to analyse one particular policy-making process. The case deals with the policy of strengthening political participation in Finland. The data is based on two recent policy programs on developing democracy, the first between the years 1997-2002 and the second between 2003 and 2007. The data consists of policy documents, reports, and the parliamentary documents connected to these policies. In the first part of the article the author discusses alternative delineation of the policy-making, in other words, how policy processes usually look like. The second part is devoted to the question of policy-making and information. Policy-makers use different types of knowledge, political, economical, research and so forth when designing the policies. The third part is a study of the policy-making concerning political participation in Finland between the years 1998- 2007. During this time period there have been three different policies and a number of measures. However, the concrete steps seem modest. The fourth part sums up the findings and connects the case study to the conceptual debate on policy-making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DEMOCRACY , *HUMAN rights , *POLITICAL participation , *LIBERALS , *NATURAL law , *CIVIL rights - Abstract
The relationship between democracy and human rights is twofold: on the one hand, the demand for democracy historically emerged as a result of increased individual rights -- and the democratic regime was instituted as a guarantor of the protection of human rights. On the other hand, there is a tension between them, since within the democratic state human rights must be protected from the will of the majority. The author examines the complex relationship between democracy and human rights from three perspectives. First, he examines the connection between the right to political participation and the idea of human rights. This connection was unequivocally established only in the 20th century in the way that the right to the freedom of conscience was interpreted as the right to taking part in the political communication process that shapes a community's self-definition. However, whereas the right to democratic participation is morally undeniably founded, its concrete institutionalization is faced with numerous dilemmas and challenges. The author further analyzes the controversy between the liberal and the republican understanding of democracy and human rights. Liberals claim that the foundation of human rights in the law of nature requires universal respect, and that democracy is a rather challenging political regime that may be established in some societies only if some preconditions are already in place. Contrary to this, the republican view, as championed by Habermas, claims that there is an inherent link between human rights and democracy and thus both principles must be universally implemented. In the end, the author examines the tension between the universalism of human rights and the inherent particularism of democracy. This tension cannot be overcome by creating a global state, but may be alleviated by formulating a definition of internal state-guaranteed fundamental rights applicable to non-citizens as well, for example by the right to seek asylum, as well as by the requirement that all democratic communities globally promote respect for human rights and for the establishment of democratic institutions worldwide. POLITICAL participation , *YOUTH in politics , *DEMOCRACY , *SOCIAL integration - Abstract
The article analyses and compares political participation of young people in Europe and Croatia, and the basic components of the existing youth-related policies. The data show that young Europeans, as well as young Croats, are underrepresented in the traditional political institutions and processes. Since the developed European states find such a state of affairs detrimental for the future of representative democracy, one of the priorities of national youth-related policies is to enhance their political commitment and social integration. In Croatia, the national youth policy has only recently been adopted by the highest governing bodies and its effects will be noticeable in several years. Croatia belongs to the majority of European countries in which young people are viewed as a resource, but at the same time to the minority of the countries with a recently established institutional infrastructure with a view to systematically deal with the problems of young people and to coordinate activities in the implementation of the youth policy. The author also discusses the problem of the differences among the definitions of the age bracket for the population of young people in official statistics, research and European youth-oriented policies. Based on research findings, the author proposes raising the upper age limit in the definition of young people as a social group from today's standard 25 to 30 years of age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the research was to create a theoretical and conceptual framework and construct a scale of political cynicism that would fit the circumstances in Croatian society. For the purpose of the research, four instruments were created to measure political cynicism, personal cynicism, political participation and personal political efficiency, with voting characteristics and trust in the media in presenting political information and confidence in the democratic system of the Republic of Croatia, as well as the socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics of respondents. The survey was conducted through an online survey form on a convenient sample of 168 subjects. The results show that there is an association between political cynicism and personal cynicism, while political cynicism is negatively associated with political participation and personal political efficiency, although all coefficients are of a relatively small order of magnitude. Political cynicism has a more significant negative relationship with distrust in the democratic political system of the Republic of Croatia, while, contrary to expectations, the media trust variable is not statistically significantly negatively associated with political cynicism. Compared to the voting characteristics, which we studied in the run-up to the 2015 and 2016 parliamentary elections, the group that did not vote at all has a higher average score on the scale of political cynicism. Contrary to expectations about the connection between political cynicism and extreme political orientation, it turns out that the political center has a statistically significantly higher score on the scale of political cynicism.

Studies in Croatia confirm that political engagement of the youth is changing. Although the youth’s interest in politics and political affairs in Croatia saw an increase between 1999 and 2004, it was still weaker than it was in the period of socialism (Ilišin, 2011), while at the same time their political engagement is on decline. Research has found that young people are more skeptical of the forms of traditional politics and are more open to expressing their political engagement through new media. This research addresses the very foundation of the opposing diagnoses as well as the thesis on the pluralization of the youth’s political engagement, based on a study conducted among the students enrolled in eight components of the University of Rijeka in 2015 (N = 635). The paper analyzes traditional forms (political party membership, elections,) and new political forms (forms of political engagement on social networks) of the students. The results are compared with the political engagement of the youth/students in European and Croatian research. The results point to the existence of hybrid politics, which includes a high readiness to vote in elections, signing paper petitions, and “liking” political initiatives on the Internet, but at the same time reveals the students’ very modest engagement in either traditional or new forms of political action., Istraživanja u Hrvatskoj potvrđuju da se političnost mladih mijenja.

The series of ethnic conflicts in the Western Balkans over the 1990s in- volved primarily the constituent nations of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia: Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks, and later, Albanians and Macedonians. Ethnic violence has equally affected other numerically smaller groups residing in the geo- graphic areas affected by conflict between the dominant, de facto state-founding ethnic groups. The paper investigates the continuous importance of ethnic identity for political participation of non-dominant groups affected by the ethno-political dynamics of dominant groups in post-conflict Croatia. Analyses of the political mobilisation of non-dominant groups in regions previously affected by conflict offer evidence that their ethno-political mobilisation reflects the continuous importance of identity-politics in the context of highly ethnicised institutions ensuring political representation at national and municipal levels., Niz etničkih sukoba na zapadnom Balkanu devedesetih godina primarno je uključivao konstitutivne narode federativne jugoslavenske države: Srbe, Hrvate, Bošnjake te, kasnije, Albance i Makedonce.

This paper addresses the importance of “knowledge” and “access to information” in the formation of young citizens’ opinion through deliberative procedures. The research presented in this paper is grounded in the theoretical framework of deliberative democracy as a democratic model and procedure that allows participants to be engaged in a rational and open dialogue before deciding on a particular issue. Our research draws empirically upon a deliberative event that took place in October 2014 at the Western Macedonia University of Applied Sciences in Greece. The topic of deliberation was “Political Public Opinion Polls.” The results of this study are commensurate with the dominant thesis in the relevant literature, which underlines that the deliberative procedure enriches the knowledge of citizens and thus enables them to participate effectively in the decision making process., Ovaj rad bavi se važnošću „znanja“ i „pristupa informacijama“ u formiranju mišljenja mladih građana o pojedinim temama kroz deliberativne procedure.

Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju kako mladi ljudi u Hrvatskoj potvrđuju veliku količinu negativnog sadržaja u medijima, kojemu uz to daju i visoku ocjenu pristranosti i senzacionalizma. Thesis Negative News and Informing Habits of Young People in Croatia is written for the purpose of researching the informing habits of young people in Croatia and discovering their daily experiences with media, which are more diverse today than ever before. Paper should also link media content, specifically negative news, with the impact it has on the consumers in terms of their attitudes, habits and behaviors. The research intended to examine how young people in Croatia perceive the media themselves and contents they provide, creating thus a media reality for consumers, and besides informing habits, it intended to examine how perception and constant surroundings with negative news affect political activity and youth involvement. Applying the qualitative method of the focus group, three group discussions were held among students from various faculties of the University of Zagreb, and such a conversational nature of the method enabled a rich discussion and encouraged the respondents to present their own experiences and reflection on media, politics and the overall situation in society. With a help of the questionnaire survey, research has shown that young people in Croatia are still relatively regularly informed, mainly through the online media, while reading the print media is almost negligible. It was also shown that young people covered by the research are still regularly going into the elections, although political participation is usually reduced to that of a "low cost", such as petition signing. The research results show that young people in Croatia confirm a large amount of negative media content, to which they also give a high rating of bias and sensationalism. Although research results can not generalized to the overall population of young people in Croatia, they still talk about the experiences of a part of that population which shows signs of saturation with negative contents, but also a certain dose of negativity and cynicism towards the overall situation in the society and the ability of politicians to act for their good fortune. Thus, research shows that negative news and the way media present contents, and especially political events, are still one of the factors that leads to greater disinterest and passivity. The study concludes that young people lack more positive stories and concrete solutions to the problems with which media showers them, as well as more responsible and impartial journalism.

The aim of the paper is to show the level of awareness of people with intellectual disabilities on political elections and to describe the reasons, ways and expectations for which persons with intellectual disabilities do (not) vote. The sample is a heterogeneous group of ten persons with intellectual disabilities from the Inclusion Centre Osijek aged from 28 to 65. Interview (semi-structured interview) has been used as a research method. The interviews took place on the Centre’s premises. The participants responded to three basic questions, as well as to sub-questions asked by the interviewers. Research data have been shown at a qualitative level. The interview results point to inadequate awareness of the respondents on political elections, resulting in the lack of awareness of the respondents on the purpose of political elections and the functionality of voting participation. Also, the voter turnout is low and, consequently, there is an inadequate use of their voting rights in terms of political participation as disabled persons. Realization of rights of persons with disabilities must not depend on the (non)readiness of the system or the will of individuals but must be the primary goal of inclusive policy and society in general.

U radu se navode i raspravljaju tumačenja te posebnosti ratnih veterana kroz tri različita pristupa koji naglašavaju selekcijsku pristranost odnosno socijalizacijske te mobilizacijske učinke., The paper examines distinctiveness of war veterans compared to general population in Croatia according to three important political phenomena: political participation, party preferences and ideological self-identification.

Political marketing and democracy, that is, its development, are mutually dependent. Political marketing affects the further democratization of society through communication of the importance of political participation and encouragement of citizens to participate, especially in the form of voting. On the other hand, the premise of political marketing is precisely the democracy and the liberalization of society, as well as the multiparty system. The importance of political marketing becomes even greater when it comes to young people, who are the least involved in politics. There are three forms of political participation available to young people: institutional, pre-institutional and non-institutional participation, which is the most popular one. The aim of this research is to gain insight into the political participation of young people in the Split-Dalmatia County and their motives, as well as to examine the impact of particular marketing activities on their participation. For the purpose of research, based on theoretical knowledge of marketing activities and typologies of political participation, a survey questionnaire was developed, answered by 163 young people from the Split-Dalmatia County. Statistical analysis of data, as well as Mann Whitney-U test confirmed the main hypothesis that marketing activities positively influence the political participation of young people.

The 2007 Constitution of Montenegro has laid down the foundation for the model of multiculturalism which is the basic principle of the states’ relation towards the fact of ethnic pluralism within Montenegrin society. Full integration of all ethnic and national communities can be achieved only through recognition and respect of their collective identities in political dimension, prevention of the assimilation and all forms of discrimination of minority national communities. In demographic terms, according to the last census, Montenegro is multicultural state with significant level of ethno cultural pluralism. From the perspective of achieved results in the integration process of minority communities in Montenegro, integration of the members of Roma community was the least successful. The difficulties in the integration process of this community in Montenegrin society are the result of institutional shortcomings, especially in terms of its political participation.

Zbog promijenjene uloge medijskih publika u novom medijskom okolišu (Cardoso, 2011; Castells, 2009; Prior, 2007), društvena stratifikacija oblikuje informiranje, komunikaciju i participaciju građana, reproducirajući nejednakosti u demokratskom procesu (Lindell 2015; Prior, 2007; van Dijk, 2012). The focus of this doctoral thesis is political communication process in terms of citizen's media and information practices and the effects these practices have on their willingness to engage in various forms of political participation. However, these effects are not conceptualized as linear and uniform for all citizens. The transforming nature of media audiences in the „new media environment“ (Cardoso, 2011; Castells, 2009; Prior, 2007), makes information practices, communication and participation of citizens socially stratified in specific ways, which reproduces inequalities of citizens in democratic process (Hargittai i Walejko, 2008; Lindell 2015; Lutz, 2016; Napoli, 2012; van Dijk, 2012). The theoretical approaches used in the thesis are media malaise (Delli Carpini, 2004; Putnam, 2000) and virtuous circle (Norris, 2000), which postulate the possible nature of the effects of media (information) use on political participation; and Bourdieu's (1986) concepts of habitus, economic, social and cultural capital, which are used to analyse the social stratification of media and information practices. According to media malaise theory, greater exposure to media, and especially to television, leads towards alienation and less trust in political and social institutions (Delli Carpini, 2004: 400). This theory is described in Putnam's (2000) book Bowling Alone, in which he claims that television privatises leisure time, in a way citizens spend more time indoors, have fewer social interactions, are less keen to spend time in activites that foster social capital and therefore less civically engaged. Research which supports this theory showed that negative media coverage of politics and media framing of politics as a strategic game makes citizens more cynical about politics and makes them feel less adequate to make changes through their participation (Delli Carpini, 2004: 399). On the other hand, authors that believe that media can mobilize people to political participation, argue that exposure to political information offered by media and political participation are in virtuous circle – citizens that are more engaged in politics will follow news media more, which will keep their political interest and make them further engaged (Norris, 2000; Strömbäck i Shehata, 2010). According to virtuous circle theory, citizens that follow news media the most are those who have most political knowledge, trust in institutions and are more likely to be politically active. However, media environment and media audiences in such environment are profoundly changed and political communication processes should be examined in the light of such changes. With multiplication and fragmentation of different forms of media in the post-broadcast era, citizens should have more information choices in a „high choice“ media environment (Prior, 2005, 2007). However, this may not be true- the increasing choice provided by new media may even increase inequalities in political knowledge, as those with less political interest will avoid some information sources (Prior, 2005, 2007). The new communication models of „mass-self communication“ (Castells, 2009) or „networked communication“ (Cardoso, 2011), provided by digital networked media, adds to the media choice, and enables new media practices. Audiences can search, avoid, share or create information, be autonomous, selective and participative, but at the same time might become fragmented, polarized, or divided by media repertoires (Ahlers, 2006; Hasebrink and Domeyer, 2012; Ksizek and Tewksbury, 2003; Napoli, 2012; Yuan, 2011; Webster, Ksiazek, 2012). The fragmentation of media audiences, the differences in media choices they make and in ther media practices could be traced following their social stratification (Lindell, 2015). In such environment it is much harder to analyse uniqe and linear media effects. Political communication research should rather adapt to these changes and embrace more flexible approaches from media audiences research (Kleis Nielsen, 2014). Therefore, to adress such changes and the stratification of media audiences, in this thesis the non-mediacentric approach is followed. Media audiences are studied from the sociological perspective, analysing how do media users, as social agents in certain social position use media (Lindell, 2015). The concept of habitus (Bourdieu, 1979/2011) is taken as a key concept to analyse different information and media practices, which are structured by the social position of the media user, the resurces media users have and environment and circumstances in which they act, but which also enables the analysis of media users as social agents, or their agency, enabled or limited by structures. Bourdieu's approach is seen by communication scholars as useful to address cross-media or trans-media use in contemporary media environment and „systematically describe the interrelation between the individual's media use and his/her societal position in a structured society“ (Weiss, 2000/2001, in Hasebrink and Domeyer, 2012: 763). Bourdieu (1986, 1979/2011) claimed that social relations are impossible to analyse without employing conepts of capital in all of its forms, not just the one used in economic theory. Depending on the field in which it operates, capital exists as an economic capital, cultural capital and social capital. Economic capital could be directly transformed in money or ownership rights and cultural capital can be transformed into economic capital through institutionalization to educational qualifications (Bourdieu, 1986). Bourdieu's matrix of social space is constructed through dimensions of economic and cultural capital. However, this analysis should also include social capital, especially when it regards post-socialist societies in which political and social capital were far more important for the social position then economic capital (Bourdieu, 1998; Cvetičanin, 2007, 2012; Cvetičanin and Popescu, 2011). Similarly as Bourdieu (1979/2011) approached the analysis of cultural consumption of consumers with specific habituses on specific social positions, media consumers, or media audiences will be analysed in this thesis. In order to distinguish between different groups of media users defined by social stratification of various media practices, the concept of media/ information repertoires is introduced (Hasebrink and Domeyer, 2012). The concept of media repertoires is useful to analyse media use in cross-media environment, and refers to „the entirety of media he or she regularly uses“ or „relatively stable trans-media patterns of media use“ (Hasebrink and Domeyer, 2012: 759). As stratification of media audiences is analysed in the thesis, or inequalities which produce different information repertoires and practices, besides Bourdieu's concept of economic, cultural and social capital, the analysis also draws from the digital divide and digital inequalities theories (Hargittai, 2003; Hargittai and Walejko, 2008; van Dijk, 2012) which offer explanations to unequal access to and use of (digital) media. In this thesis four research questions were answered: 1) Do different media/ information practices of citizens have mobilization effect (virtuous circle theory) for differnet forms of political participation? 2) What kind of media audiences typologies in terms of their media/information repertoires exist? 3) In what way does the social position of the media user (economic, cultural and social capital) influence the formation of media/ information repertoires? 4) What kind of media practices and preferences and attitudes towards politics are specific to types of media audiences defined by their media/information repertoires? For the purpose of determining patterns of socially stratified media use and political participation, a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods will be used. The integration of the quantitative and qualitative data will be done through explanatory sequential mixed methods design (Creswell, Plano Clark, 2011: 82). This kind of data integration in mixed methods design is most useful when the research aim is to assess trends and relationship between variables and explain the deeper mechanisms or reasons behind these trends (Creswell, Plano Clark, 2011: 82). Mixed methods explanatory sequential design is done in two phases. In the first phase, the quantitative strand is designed and implemented by creating instruments for quantitative analysis, collecting and analysing data. In the second phase, qualitative analysis follows quantitative analysis design and these data are analysed keeping in mind the results of the first phase. First and second phase are “integrated” through the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data (Creswell, Plano Clark, 2011: 83). Research results don't confirm the hypothesis that more exposure to information has a significant effect on political participation, besides on online participation. On the other hand, commercial media have media malaise effect on some forms of political participation. Therefore, media in Croatia seem not to have a significant beneficial effect on political participation, as virtuous circle theory would suggest. Croatian media audiences are fragmented based on their information repertoires in five ideal types, with uninterested users being the most frequent type. These different groups of media users differ because of their social position, the economic, cultural, social capital and other resources they hold, and are informing themselves in different ways and with different pursposes. Analysis also resulted in five ways these media audiences groups frame politics. Politics is framed mostly negatively, audiences being apathetic to it, framing it as a „dirty game“, seing politics as being mediatized (which is also perceived as negative), having populist approaches to politics, or more rarely expressing interest. However, noone expressed positive frames of politics as a democratic process.

Rezultati su pokazali neuravnoteženo izvještavanje u svim analiziranim tiskovinama pri čemu dominiraju manje novinske forme, te visoku razinu vjerodostojnosti i objektivnosti u izvještavanju koja je ipak narušena dominantnim jednostranim izvještavanjem., Managing information in the media is based on journalist and editorial evaluation of news value which is based on various criteria that determine whether an event will become news. Communicating political issues is occupying a large part of the media landscape, providing a legitimisation of political decisions, but also affecting political participation of citizens, which is getting smaller. Elections to the European Parliament are perceived as secondordered, primarily because citizens are poorly informed about the internal functioning and structure of the EU. A survey conducted in March and April 2013 during the official first campaign for the European Parliament elections in Croatia in the five widely-read newspapers (Jutarnji list, Večernji list, 24 sata, Novi list and Slobodna Dalamcija), by using a method of content analysis on a sample of 250 articles sought to determine the form of media coverage of the campaign, then issues related to the EU in general and to establish indicators of credibility and objectivity. The results showed unbalanced reporting in all analyzed newspapers with smaller news forms, and with a high level of credibility and objectivity in reporting, which was still disrupted with dominant onesided reporting.

With the recent rise of the Right Wing throughout the world, there has been a significant increase in production of countervailing political comedy and satire. In the USA, figures such as Donald Trump, Kellyanne Conway and Sean Spicer have increasingly figured as objects of unbound satire, in shows from Stephen Colbert’s to Saturday Night Live. Political satire has been recently developing in the Balkans as well, especially in Croatia and Serbia, with the work of Croatia’s News Bar and Serbia’s 24 Minuta and Njuz.net. Contemporary media theory and political science have begun to stress the importance and influence of this type of resistance to authoritarianism from the point of view of participatory democracy and active citizenship. This article presents the modus operandi of Croatia’s and Serbia’s political satirists and examines their approaches to resistance by engaging with a set of representative texts and videos., S nedavnim rastom u snazi i uticaju desnice širom sveta, javila se i intenzivirana proizvodnja političke komedije i satire koja pokušava da joj se odupre.

Social capital strengthens generalized trust and political participation. Bearing in mind that social connections increasingly move from physical to virtual world, the main goal of this paper was to compare the impact of membership in civic organizations and membership in online social networks on political participation and political attitudes. In order to test the research hypotheses, a field survey research on a sample of youth population between 18 and 35 years old (N=335) was conducted. The research brought mixed results, with neither online or offline social capital showing strong impact on political participation and political attitudes, even though in most cases online social capital was the stronger predictor. Thus, the authors conclude that internet ties have stronger impact on political phenomena when compared to classical civic associations.

Osim toga, rad detaljno analizira različite vidove političke participacije te nudi objašnjenje razloge niske formalne i neformalne participacije., Researchers have always found young people interesting as an indicator of the state of a society. Attitudes, values, competences and behavior of young people are considered a sort of litmus paper that can adequately explained wider social tendencies of a given society. This paper analyzes political competencies and political participation of Zagreb youth. Political competencies and political participation are two characteristics of quality of functioning of consolidated democracies. It is therefore important to monitor and develop them in order to achieve a more effective political system. With a combination of qualitative and quantitative research techniques, the authors contextualize those two structural dimensions of the political life of young people. Hence, this paper explains political competences and political participation in reference to contemporary literature in this field. The results of a survey conducted on a sample of 411 young people in Zagreb, together with the results of five group interviews with high school and university students, demonstrate low level of understanding of roles and factors of youth policy. The authors argue that young people are discouraged to participate in community and political life because of such low understanding of politics.

The author explores how the internet and the new media are changing the way that we communicate, act and think, individually and collectively, through the example of the Occupy Wall Street Movement. The author claims that The Occupy Movement, as a post-narrative project conceived in a digital environment, is less of a political activity, and more a new way of behavior for its members and for the society at large. Its focus on consensus building and its modus operandi are reflecting the principles of the Internet, web-organization and cooperation. Therefore, its success is not about achieving any particular political aim, or winning an election, but about the general acceptance of these values and their becoming part of a wider political agenda., Autor istražuje kako internet i novi mediji menjaju način na koji komuniciramo, delujemo i mislimo, pojedinačno ali i kolektivno, na primeru pokreta „Okupirajmo Volstrit“.
