The “Lives of the Saints” is a never-published work promised by the pseudonymous “Pasquill” in his contributions to the print campaign to combat the influence of the Puritan Martin Marprelate tracts (1588–89). While it began as a polemical fiction, the “Lives of the Saints” evidently did exist in the form of a working compilation of unflattering anecdotes illustrative of Puritan hypocrisy and absurdity. This article argues that these notes were incorporated into
Almond for a Parrat (1590), and that their appearance in this pamphlet was necessitated by a shift in the target of the anti-Martinist campaign away from attacks on Puritans generally and toward one named reformer, John Penry. Furthermore, the article suggests that “Pasquill” and the author ofAlmond for a Parrat are the same person, Thomas Nashe, and that readingAlmond for a Parrat as a pastiche that evolved in the process of composition not only helps date the writing of the pamphlet but also explains a structural miscellaneity unusual even among the corpus of anti-Martinist polemic. ASCETICISM , *SPIRITUAL life , *HOLINESS , *BRIDES , *POLEMICS , *BAPTISM - Abstract
Scholarship on the Jovinianist controversy has shown that the idea of baptism as deeply transformative lay at the heart of Jovinian's thinking. Scholars have likewise held that Jerome, who through his Adversus Jovinianum is our main source to the ideas of Jovinian, did not acknowledge the ecclesiological concerns on which his opponent's argument was based. This article argues, to the contrary, that Jerome was well aware of the challenge that Jovinian's ecclesiology implied for ascetic superiority. I show that in his polemics against Jovinian, Jerome did not disregard the importance of baptism, but rather reinterpreted it. The transformation ascribed by Jovinian to the baptismal rite was transferred by Jerome to the postbaptismal life, and more precisely, to the ascetic life. I examine three themes: Baptism as a new birth, baptism as a resurrection to a spiritual life, and the baptized person as a bride of Christ, showing how these were ascetically interpreted by Jerome. I argue that Against Jovinian is a work deeply engaged with the precisely the questions which Jovinian raised, namely about the essence of the church and the relationship between its members. The article "Hypermorality and other paradoxes of the ego-superego continuum" by Wolfram Bergande in the journal "Forum der Psychoanalyse" discusses the use of the term "hypermorality" in relation to antisemitism and the global art scene. Bergande argues that hypermorality is a cultural defense technique used by both victims and perpetrators. The article criticizes the simplification and polemics in the discussion about hypermorality and emphasizes the importance of a differentiated analysis. It also delves into the historical roots and psychodynamic aspects of hypermorality. [Extracted from the article]

INTERFAITH dialogue ,POLEMICS ,INTENTIONALITY (Philosophy) ,RELIGIOUS education ,RELIGIOUSNESS ,RECONCILIATION - Abstract
The aim of this article is to trace a brief history of the attempts that have been made to promote inter-religious dialogue, to outline the accomplishments to date, and to scrutinize both the current challenges posed to this project, and the future requirements to be met if worldwide interfaith cooperation is ever to be achieved. When investigating current inter-religious interactions, it is critical not to neglect the polemical dimension, but to establish the causes for the disagreements, and to effectively remove them. Given the inevitability of religious transmission within families, educational systems worldwide must offer exposure to multiple worldviews and belief systems that accurately reflect the diverse societies and cultures around the globe. In order to liberate themselves from the grip of fanatical thinking, the youth should not only be instructed in the teachings of a single religion, but also be exposed to the origins of humanity's inclination towards religious beliefs and to the various ways in which these beliefs are expressed. This exposure, and the resulting newly-formed mentality will strengthen the response to Leonard Swidler's call for the endorsement of a Universal Declaration of Global Ethics and, together with this indefatigable supporter of inter-religious co-operation, we will finally be able to genuinely proclaim that we are living in an Age of Global Dialogue. CULTS , *PROPHECY , *MONOTHEISM , *MESSIAH , *CANONIZATION , *PROPHETS - Abstract
Because scripture represents the direct word of God, it is the most sacred source for authority in the scriptural monotheisms. Scripture is conveyed to humanity through extraordinary individuals known as prophets. But if the purported prophet is a false prophet, then the conveyed message is false, resulting in the collapse of the structure upon which religious authority rests. This problem was recognized in the Hebrew Bible, and accusations of flawed prophecy and deceitful prophets figure prominently in relations between the scriptural monotheisms. Jews do not accept the authenticity of Jesus' role as messiah (and prophet) in the NT, and Jews and Christians do not accept the authenticity of Muhammad's role as prophet in the Qur'an. But the rejection is unidirectional. As a rule, established religions cannot accept new prophets, while new religions accept the prophets that lived before, though with certain qualifications. Each of the three classic scriptural monotheisms also declares an "end" to prophecy after the canonization of its scripture. Yet despite these deadlines, each acknowledges that God could nevertheless send another prophet, leaving open the wild card for new prophecy, new revelation, and even new religion; within each of the classic scriptural monotheisms, individuals arose after the canonization of scripture who were deemed by many to be prophets or something "like" prophets. This essay presents a preliminary phenomenology of prophethood, around which much of the religious polemics between the scriptural monotheisms are constructed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FOURTEENTH century , *POSTURE , *POLEMICS , *GEOGRAPHY , *ATTITUDE (Psychology) - Abstract
The Deccan in the first half of the second millennium is marked by political and religious ferment. The Cōḻas, Gaṅgas, Rāṣṭrakūṭas, and Cāḷukyas are contesting its mundane territory, while the Śaivas, Jainas, and Vaiṣṇavas are contesting its spiritual geography. Unlike the interactions of the earthly rulers which spill real blood, the bloodshed of the spiritual gurus is merely metaphorical. But, the animosity driving their interactions is no less intense, for survival is at stake for them just as it is for their secular counterparts. In this essay, I explore the Jaina point of view in sectarian contestations between the twelfth and the fourteenth centuries through the texts of three Kannada authors: Dharmāṁṛtam of Nayasēna (1112CE), Samayaparīkṣe of Brahmaśiva (c.1200CE), and Dharmaparīkṣe of Vṛttavilāsa (c.1360CE). My objective is to identify the sectarian 'other' that these authors address, dispute with and vilify, and to explore the changing nature of this sectarian 'other' and the shifting attitudes of these authors towards their opponents. POLEMICS , *IDOLATRY , *RELIGIOUS idols - Abstract
The Chinese Rites Controversy was one of the most contentious issues in the French church at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Nourished with rumors from China, it was predominantly a debate among men, with the exception of an extraordinary intervention by a woman, Paule Payen de Lionne, in 1701. In a public letter to the Jesuits, she used a dispute concerning her missionary son Artus de Lionne to launch a fierce critique of what she saw as the Society of Jesus's toleration of Chinese idolatry. Conscious that many would see it as inappropriate for a woman to discuss a matter of ecclesiastical controversy, Payen nonetheless filled the letter with references to her sex. This article proposes that she strategically invoked tropes of feminine weakness and intellectual inadequacy as rhetorical tools to contrast the simple purity (and thus truth) of her perspective with the verbose artifice of the Jesuits. At the same time, the register of aggression in her letter forces historians to reconsider the view that women engaging in querelles were obliged to adopt a less confrontational tone than men. This episode shows how women could use femininity to carve out a unique voice in an otherwise male‐dominated public sphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The only complete copy of Tamás Balásfi's Epinicia Benedicto Nagi known today is preserved among the old books at the Batthyaneum in Alba Iulia (Gyulafehérvár). This work was published in Pozsony in 1616. According to current knowledge, only three copies of this small volume, consisting of about forty pages, have survived. The copy in the Hungarian National Library is missing the entire first sheet (A), including the title page and dedication, as well as two pages from the end. This small book is particularly significant for the study of Péter Pázmány's controversial writings before his archbishopric, representing the final piece in a series of polemics (1614–1616) written against the Lutherans of Western Transdanubia. Pázmány became archbishop in 1616 and was either unable or unwilling to continue engaging in this controversy, leaving Tamás Balásfi to conclude the polemic on his behalf. At the end of this paper, I will provide a transcription of a missing part from the Budapest copy: the Latin dedication at the beginning of the book. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polemical texts are among the most productive sources for the discipline of the History of Religions. In addition to providing the researcher with various information about the period in which they were written, works of this genre can provide the researcher with details about the beliefs of the parties involved, their perspectives on each other, how they define themselves and where they position themselves, which cannot be found elsewhere. The twelfth century was an important turning point for Judeo-Christian refutations, which constitute an important branch of this genre. This century saw an extraordinary increase in the number of polemical texts written in Europe, as well as a change in content and method. The subject of this article is the work titled “Against the Inveterate Obduracy of the Jews” by the Benedictine abbot Peter of Cluny (aka Peter the Venerable), who led the Cluny monasteries centered in France between 1122-1156 and was considered one of the most important figures of the Western Church in his time. The period in which the work was written, the author’s style and sources, and the plagiarism allegations against him will be discussed; its similarities and differences with classical polemical texts will be revealed by considering its content, and thus the place of the work in anti-Jewish Christian polemical texts will be tried to be determined.

FEMINISM , *BIRTH control , *POLEMICS - Abstract
This article discusses the challenges of researching a biography of the personal, professional and political life of Lady Gertrude Denman (1884–1954). 'Trudie' as she was familiarly known, took on leading roles in a number of organisations, including the Women's Institute Movement, the National Birth Control Council and the Women's Land Army. She also provided financial support to many organisations, including the Liberal party, to which she was politically affiliated. She was a skilled chair of meetings and conferences, with an acute eye for procedure; an enabler, facilitator and motivator who encouraged co-operation and smoothed ruffled feathers as she cajoled self-righteous firebrands with difficult personalities to work together and ensured ordinary working-class people had a voice. We explore her now largely forgotten role in these organisations and argue that, as the ultimate pragmatist, she favoured and getting things done by co-operation over polemics and grandstanding. We also address the many complexities of her personal life, including her relationship with Margaret Pyke. In navigating the many 'silences' that surround her personal and professional life, we seek to understand the relationship between her personal experiences and her practical, political and professional roles as an activist in the contemporary women's movement. The study is devoted to the analysis of the controversy between Zinaida Gippius and Mark Slonim that arose in the mid-1920s on the pages of periodicals of the Russian diaspora. Russian emigration was interested in the dispute over the two branches of literature development, as it concerned the issues of the state of literature of the Russian diaspora and literature of Soviet Russia, as well as the future of these literatures. Gippius argued that literature in Russia is in decline, because it is “torn from the roots”, and Russian literature is preserved only in emigration. Slonim insisted that the literature of emigration was stagnating, and the literature of Soviet Russia was giving new names, new literary groups. The field of criticism of literature of the Russian diaspora in the 1920s and 1930s is poorly studied at the present stage of literary criticism. The controversy between Slonim and Gippius has not been considered by researchers before, this is the novelty of the work. Russian literature the examination of different points of view on the state and future of the two branches of Russian literature in the mid-1920s makes it possible to understand the public mood among the Russian emigration and their view of contemporary literature. The paper traces the dispute between Slonim and Gippius, which influenced the literary life of emigration in the 1920s, identifies issues in which both critics agreed, as well as theses that the authors continued to prove. Russian literature historians emphasize that Slonim put forward a thesis, which will be developed in the future by historians of literature of the Russian diaspora, that the literature of the Russian diaspora is not an independent literature, but only one of the branches of Russian literature.

The study focuses on the polemical response of the publicist M. O. Menshikov (who gained popularity in the 1890s) to the critical and philosophical work of D. S. Merezhkovsky, “A. S. Pushkin,” little studied by contemporary scholars. The article aims to reveal the features of critical assessments in M. O. Menshikov’s article “The Slander of Adoration” to determine the specifics of his views at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. The work explores the creative connections of M. O. Menshikov with V. S. Solovyov, reveals the features of the polemic with the decadent writer, and notes the critic’s ability to delve into the historical and spiritual context of Pushkin’s work. In particular, M. O. Menshikov’s understanding of the central images of the poem “The Poet and the Crowd” and “The Bronze Horseman” by Pushkin refutes interpretations of works based on Nietzscheanism, which is alien to Pushkin’s oeuvre. The article proves that when analyzing the poem “The Poet and the Crowd,” Menshikov was one of the first to point out the differences between the image of the Poet and the personality of Pushkin. The research indicates the connection between Menshikov’s beliefs and the teachings of L. N. Tolstoy in understanding such phenomena as “non-resistance to evil by violence,” “heroism,” and “church.” The critic in the polemic acted as a defender of the traditions of Russian classics despite the inconsistency of some of his assessments.

The evidence argued herein belies the notion that the early Tudor laureate John Skelton (d. 1529) was a traditionalist or conservative in respect of the humanist educational movement. For a section of his obscure Speke Parott participates in the controversies over Hellenism occurring in England and elsewhere in northern Europe at the time. In the poem, Skelton's Parott mocks scholastic Greek usage and advocates in favor of the novel humanist Greek philology, in precise parallel with the better-understood polemics of such international humanist luminaries as his familiars Desiderius Erasmus and Thomas More. Are polemics a useful part of theological discourse? This article argues that it is and explores the conditions and theological rationale for polemics. These are explored by means of a case study of the Dutch second-generation neo-Calvinist theologian Klaas Schilder (1890–1952). Schilder, a prolific and polemical writer, shows how theological polemics are embedded in the doctrine of God's immanence, the church, the covenant, and the use of human reason. Schilder's view on tension as a key motif in the Christian life further informs his argument for a polemical theology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ahead of the syncronous Regional Elections (Pilkada) that to be run in November 2024, there is still a polemic related to the legal guidelines for the acting of regional heads's levitation whose term of office ends ahead of the 2024 simultaneous elections. The legal basis for the Minister of Home Affairs Regulation Number 4 of 2023 concerning Acting Regional Heads issued by the Minister of Home Affairs is considered to have many irregularities. This paper reveal the absence of statutory delegation in the issuance of the Permendagri and the use of legal considerations of the Constitutional Court judges in the Constitutional Court Decision Number 15/PUU-XX/2022 as a consideration in the Permendagri. The research method used in this paper is normative juridical through a statutory approach as a source of existing law. The results of this study conclude that the issuance of Permendagri No. 4 of 2023 is unfounded if only viewed through the presence or absence of delegation of the formation of implementing regulations. If viewed more broadly through the theory of discretion, then this is considered valid, in order to fill the legal vacuum. The legal deliberations of the Constitutional Court judges in MK's Decision Number 15/PUU-XX/2022 also strengthen the legitimacy of the issuance of Permendagri No. 4 of 2023, this is because the content of the legal considerations is considered to be commensurate with the ruling, even though the ruling was rejected. Unfortunately, the implementing regulation chosen by the government to regulate the inauguration of acting regional heads is in the form of a Minister of Home Affairs Regulation, not a Government Regulation. Although meditating on death has long been a central philosophical practice and is gaining prominence in modern European public discourse, certain misconceptions still persist. The Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke does not shy away from confronting real and performed images of death, combining a denouncing cinematic approach with no less polemic aesthetic and ethical theories. Certainly, visually shocking and disturbing films can, in their own way, challenge the boundaries of what is thinkable, at times even touching upon the unthinkable. Images of death and death-related themes are particularly pervasive in Haneke's films. His films raise significant philosophical and ethical questions about mortality, violence, death, and ageing. This analysis is a tentative attempt to map how Haneke explores representations of death and dying in Benny's Video (1992) and Funny Games (1997), with particular reference to the rewind gesture depicted in both films. In doing so, it aims to examine the conversation such films prompt between moving images and the audience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study delves into the polemical exchange between the 19th-century Ottoman scholar Harputlu İshak Hoca (d. 1892) and the protestant missionary Karl Gottlieb Pfander (d. 1865). By examining the historical context surrounding their controversy, this research sheds light on the interaction between the Ottoman state and British and American missionaries, particularly during the expansion of missionary activities in Anatolia. This paper also explores the responses of the Ottoman authorities to the missionary printing activities and the impact of the Church Missionary Society's work on societal and governmental levels. Furthermore, it provides an analysis of Pfander's Mizan ul-haqq (The Balance of Truth) and Harputlu's Şemsü'l-hakîkat (The Sun of Truth) and Ziyâü'l-kulûb (The Light of Hearts), portraying them as not only engaging in interreligious polemics but also as creators of textual products that reflect the complex historical realities of their time. This research underscores the Ottoman scholars' close attention and prompt responses to missionary literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay primarily consists of an interpretation of The Anti-Christ, arguably Nietzsche's most abrasive and overall least appreciated book. By treating this late work as what it in fact is, on the other hand, namely, the culmination of Nietzsche's lifelong polemic against Christianity and the source of many of his most explicit and revealing pronouncements on what a "revaluation of all values" ultimately means, this essay argues that this work presents us not only with the philosopher's definitive position on Christianity, but with the real meaning of his thought as such. Although the Dialogue of Timothy and Aquila is set in Alexandria under the Patriarchate of Cyril (first half of the 5th century), scholars have attempted to identify an earlier version of the text, dating it to the 3d century. This alleged earlier version, however, is not extant as such, and the present article will show that the author of the Dialogue made an extensive use of Epiphanius of Salamis' De mensuris (dated to 392). The hypothesis that both Epiphanius and the author of the Dialogue used a common source is refuted by a close comparison of the two works in their earliest reconstructable form, taking into account the Georgian-Armenian version of De mensuris and a newly discovered manuscript of the Dialogue. INTERPERSONAL relations , *ABJECTION , *FRIENDSHIP , *AMBIVALENCE , *POLEMICS - Abstract
While Eros has a central philosophical function in the dialogues of Plato, it all but disappears as a philosophical term in the thought of Aristotle, and is replaced by the more rational and reciprocal relation of friendship, φιλία. This essay asks what becomes of Eros in Aristotle's thinking, whether as deity, natural or cosmic force, or mode of human relation. Drawing on the ancient epithet of Eros, Ἔρως λυσιµελής , unbinder of limbs, Aristotle's usages of both ἔρως and λύσις (loosening, unbinding), respectively are traced in their ambivalence for his fundamentally organismic philosophy, insofar as they disturb the organism's ontological integrity. With the assistance of Kristeva's notion of the abject, it is argued that while Aristotle's overt stance is a polemic against eros, his principal metaphysical innovations – the recasting of ἀρχή as divine τέλος , and the separation of material and moving causes – are solutions (λύσεις) to aporias that may involve a traversal of the sublime that is also irreducibly corporeal and erotic. NINETEENTH century , *MASOCHISM , *GENEALOGY , *POLEMICS , *INVENTORS - Abstract
The article is foremost dedicated to Nietzsche's account of cruelty, which represents one of the central focuses of Nietzsche's genealogical polemic, if not its very foundation. This close reading is complemented by drawing parallels with two other outstanding intellectual figures of the nineteenth century, in whom cruelty plays no less a role. These two authors – one could say that together with Nietzsche they form a kind of cruel trio from the European East – are the writers Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, the latter of whom is also the inventor of a particular genre of erotic discourse characterised by 'tyranny, cruelty and, above all, the infidelity of a beautiful woman,' which inspired Krafft-Ebing to name a type of perversion after Masoch. The paper shows that the affinity between the authors lies not only in the fact that cruelty is one of the key themes in all three of them, but that the connection between them – and thus perhaps the beginning of an era characterised, as Alain Badiou said, by an intellectual fascination with cruelty – needs to be sought in the idea of the internalisation of cruelty, which Nietzsche in particular considered to be one of the fundamental driving forces of civilisation. This article explores Spain's positioning in the shifting currents of the later Enlightenment through the polemic works of lawyer and satirist Juan Pablo Forner. Forner's attempts to prove the existence of an autochthonous tradition of Spanish pragmatism and empiricism form an index of the penetration of intra‐Enlightenment debates into Spanish thought in the late eighteenth century. Forner, profoundly aware of tensions between Cartesian rationalism and Lockean sentimental empiricism across Europe, intervenes on the side of empiricism, insisting that Cartesianism is nothing but a guise of Scholastic hyperrationalism. The article disputes scholarly perceptions of Forner as a Christian reactionary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The following article is a response to Przemysław Krajewski’s critique of our previous publication concerning Pre-Roman and Roman Iron Ages in the Pyrzyce Lowland Area. The Author focuses on the application of the triangulation method. However, there are numerous inconsistencies, misinterpretations and manipulations based on the author’s assumptions rather than facts. In this short answer we are responding to two groups of arguments, regarding sources and raw data, as well as an application of the method. Some overall remarks on the author’s text are also included.

Through a selection of libels published by zealous Catholics during three peaks of French interconfessional conflicts, this article proposes, on the one hand, to reconstitute the strategies presiding over the exploitation of the memory of the St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre for purposes of politico-religious argumentation, in particular by revealing what analogies are made between this event and the context in which the texts mentioning it appeared. On the other hand, focusing on discursive practices, it shows how such strategies resulted in the shaping of several a posteriori interpretations of the events of 1572, successively considering its attribution to Charles IX, its reading as proof of a divine blessing, and finally the exploitation of the combination of these two motives in order to legitimize St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre or even to suggest comparable initiatives. Through this double questioning, the article shows that the libelists considered St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre as a common historical episode that could be exploited, like many others, as an exemplum for making political claims in the present thanks to analogies with the past. It then reveals that the instrumentalisation of its memory led to define the zealous Catholics through a double rejection of the Edict of Nantes (both in terms of oblivion and peaceful cohabitation). Finally, it shows that the political and religious conflicts of the early 17th century were thought of in close connection with those of the preceding decades, and invites scholars to consider them as such as well.

For the first time, the article examines the critical reception of the poetry of Georgy Ivanovich Rybintsev (1885–1944), an “unknown poet” who unwittingly became involved in the literary struggle of 1913–1914. Rybintsev’s first collection of poems, A Necklace of Tears and Flowers (1913), went unnoticed by reviewers but allowed the author to enter literary circles close to the publishing house “Alcyone” (“Altsiona”). The owner of “Alcyone” A.M. Kozhebatkin published collections of aspiring poets of modernist orientation at the expense of the authors, but the appearance of the book under this brand meant belonging to the circle of Moscow modernists, which was considered by critics. The second collection of Rybintsev’s poems, Autumn’s Blueness (1914), published by “Alcyone,” unlike his first collection, attracted the attention of critics. However, their reviews were dictated not so much by the advantages and disadvantages of the poems as by the logic of the literary struggle. V.F. Khodasevich, who published his collection of poems Happy House (1914) in the “Alcyone,” spoke approvingly about Rybintsev’s book. S.M. Gorodetsky, who was at enmity with “Alcyone” for personal and literary reasons, subjected Rybintsev to sharp criticism, putting him in a row of incompetent amateurs. The radical modernist S.P. Bobrov attacked Rybintsev’s book in his usual mocking manner, both in futuristic (almanac “Rukonog”) and non-modernist editions. The critic of the realistic orientation V.V. Brusyanin, on the contrary, gave a detailed positive review of Rybintsev’s poetry, contrasting it with modernist authors from the circle of “Alcyone.” Critics’ reviews of Rybintsev’s poetry are reproduced here in full for the first time.

This article presents the hitherto unpublished Syriac text of the Turgāmā on Charms and Sorcery , a specimen of pastoral literature produced by Ignatius VII ʿAzīz bar Sāḇtā, known also as Abū al-Maʿānī, who served as the patriarch of Ṭūr ʿAbdīn from 1461 to 1481. A representative of the centuries-long tradition of polemic against magic and use of amulets among Syriac Christians, the work is a rare and valuable witness to the dynamics of popular religion among West Syrians of early Ottoman Mesopotamia. The text is accompanied by an English translation and a brief discussion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article considers the relationship between the "impious" (ἀσεβείς) of Wisdom of Solomon 1:16–2:24 and Epicurean philosophy. Though most recent commentators reject the idea that the impious are portrayed as Epicureans, they fail to consider this passage within the context of Hellenistic Epicureanism (Lucretius, Philodemus) and its discontents (e.g., Epictetus, Plutarch). The author shows that the impious' materialistic account of the human soul and its destruction at death draws heavily on Epicurean ideas and imagery and that aspects of their exhortation to hedonism recall Epicurean sexual ethics. Furthermore, though the way of life that the impious endorse does diverge significantly from Epicurean hedonism properly understood, such caricatures of Epicurean philosophy are themselves common tropes of anti-Epicurean polemic. It is concluded that the sage has chosen to present a hostile group of advocates of Epicurean philosophy as the paradigmatic adversaries of true wisdom and justice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Toward the end of the Noahide commandment pericope in the Talmud (b. Sanh. 56–60), we find a sugya (pericope) featuring the prohibition on meat consumption imposed on Adam and its permission to the Noahides. This unique sugya pieces together halakic and haggadic sources that reinterpret the Garden of Eden story and address the complex relationship between humans and animals. This article will examine this sugya , focusing on its closing story, which describes a pietist who merits a gift of heavenly flesh. I will demonstrate that the story has many levels of meaning, grounded in both its immediate and wider contexts, and claim that it conceals a polemic with a similar Christian story (Acts 10), which describes impure meat that descends from the sky, undermining the cultural and halakic divisions between Jews and non-Jews. The comparison between the two stories reveals opposing worldviews with regard to law and lawlessness, utopia and redemption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"What is the summum bonum ?" This question is, without exaggeration, the ultimate existential question. Of no less import is its corollary: how is one to achieve this summum bonum ? Maimonides' Guide for the Perplexed endeavors to provide the answers. That said, the precise intent of Maimonides answers has generated no less perplexity than the original questions. Indeed, modern Jewish philosophers have spared no ink in trying to ascertain Maimonides' intentions on human perfection. In this essay, I seek not to add yet another perspective on Maimonides' intentions but to provide compelling support for existing positions; support found – worlds apart from the ivory towers where philosophers spill their ink – in the private quarters of a Canaanite slave. It is my thesis that Maimonides, in his last Law on Slaves, provides us with the answers to the ultimate existential questions and, accordingly, with a resolution to the perennial polemics on perfection. This article offers an analysis of the novel De boodschapper ['The messenger'], a fictional biography of the prophet Muḥammad, by the Dutch author of Iranian origin, Kader Abdolah. The book, published in 2008 along with an adapted translation of the Quran, is a variation on the sīrah, a genre devoted to telling Muḥammad's life story. Although Abdolah declares that his project aims at promoting mutual understanding between Dutch and Muslim culture underscoring his appreciation for the Prophet, his presentation of Muḥammad is not only secularized, but also strikingly negative. This article argues that the novel can in fact be regarded as an example of polemic biography, a type of Western anti-Islamic discourse, aimed at discrediting Muḥammad as a prophet. The major tropes of this literary tradition will be analysed here as used in Abdolah's rendering of the Prophet's life story. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents a polemics with a thesis formulated by J. Harris that group socialization theory is an alternative to family nurture. The thesis, indeed, "annihilates" the nurture category and the existing achievements of education sciences off the scientific discourse. The text focuses on an analysis of consistency of arguments regarding the main aspects of the theory in question, identified at four levels of tensions between: genes and environment, child and adult, family and peer group, and being raised in the family and socialization in peer group. The inconsistencies and overinterpretations, expressed by J. Harris in her "systemic" depreciation of child-rearing, inspired some reflections about the possible roles of nurture viewed in the paradigm of biological and spiritual evolution synthesis. AbstractIn this paper we respond to the commentary, Human misconnection? A response to Beuthin and Bruce on Medical Assistance in Dying providers’ lived experience, by C. Lyon. While spirited and respectful debate of topics of interest to society are important, we illustrate how Lyon offers a polarizing reaction to findings with which he simply does not agree. We surface how Lyon ignores the methodological context underpinning the interpretive findings of the original study. In so doing, he violates an important tenet of scholarly critique and renders his claims and motivation questionable. We argue that Lyon’s commentary is an opinion piece disguised as scholarly critique that will limit thoughtful conversation about assisted dying that might otherwise engage and generate new understandings across difference. This article examines the indexes in some Continental editions of John Milton's Pro populo Anglicano defensio and Claudius Salmasius's Defensio Regia. Previously little noticed, the indexes are treated here both as a marketing device for publishers and as a guide for the perusal of the polemics. The authorship of the index to the Pro populo Anglicano defensio is considered in relation to the bibliography of that work as well as Milton's attitudes toward indexing. The Miltonic index is shown to possess a rhetorical construction in its own right and to provide a means for readers to easily access the main points of the controversy. The later Salmasian index is approached similarly. An addendum highlights the career of the Parisian publisher Adrienne Brillet, who printed both indexes in a unique joint edition of the polemics, with special attention to her dealings with Salmasius. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Landgrave Moritz of Hesse-Kassel (1572–1632) introduced Calvinism into his territory under the heading "Points of Improvement." The points of improvement concerned 1) the prohibition of discussion of the person of Christ, 2) "supplementing" the Ten Commandments with the explicit mention of the prohibition of images, 3) the abolition of images in church buildings, 4) the breaking of the bread in the Lord's Supper. This was followed by a long-lasting dispute by means of publication between the theologians at the universities in Marburg and Giessen. In these publications, the now common terminology of denominations, "Lutheran," "Calvinist," and "Reformed," were used in polemical distinction as controversial terms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Total resummation of double-logarithmic contributions to the spin structure function leads to the Regge form of the small- asymptotics as was shown in the papers by Bartels–Ermolaev–Ryskin (BER). Later, the value of the BER intercept was disproved by Kovchegov–Pitonyak–Sivert. The huge discrepancy between these results provoked an extensive polemics in the literature. Eventually, the result of BER has recently been confirmed, except for a very small discrepancy. We expound the issue of this polemics and its history, and suggest possible ways for calculating the intercept with greater accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RELIGIOUS education , *PROTESTANT apologetics , *POLEMICS , *POSTSTRUCTURALISM - Abstract
During the Renaissance and Reformation eras, the discipline of religious studies saw a notable paradigm change. This movement entailed a departure from the previous emphasis on Christian apologetics and polemics towards a more rigorous and analytical evaluation of established religious ideas. Friedrich Max Müller and Cornelis Petrus Tiele were instrumental in facilitating this paradigm shift by their rigorous scientific investigations into the field of religion. This article provides an overview of the scholarly contributions made by the authors in the field of religious studies. It explores their viewpoints on key concepts such as neutrality, objectivity, error study, and comparative religion. Notwithstanding the presence of detractors, their scholarly endeavors established the foundational framework for conducting a thorough examination of religious phenomena on an international level, hence facilitating the development of comparative religious studies. In the present day, the academic investigation of religion persists as a means for researchers to engage in a systematic and analytical examination, hence there is need to incorporate environmental and ecological aspects and poststructuralist deconstruction, thereby enhancing comprehension of the societal significance of religion. The founding studies of Müller and Tiele continue to hold significance and are indispensable in present-day study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PHENOMENOLOGY , *POLEMICS , *ARGUMENT - Abstract
The so-called controversy around psychologism (Psychologismusstreit) is composed, actually, of a series of singular polemics that do not necessarily have a factual link between them. The discussion between Herbart and Beneke is one of them, having particular importance for being at the beginning of the conflict. In it, the psychologistic thinker Beneke acutely perceives the weak points of the Herbartian position and initiates a line of argument that, with variations, will remain constant in psychologism and will give meaning so that the last act of the drama called Psychologismusstreit, is delivered by Husserl's phenomenology.
