Abstract

We analyse the performance of a gas time projection chamber (TPC) as a high-performance gamma-ray telescope and polarimeter in the e$^+$e$^-$ pair creation regime. We use data collected at a gamma-ray beam of known polarisation. The TPC provides two orthogonal projections $(x,z)$ and $(y,z)$ of the tracks induced by each conversion in the gas volume. We use a simple vertex finder in which vertices and pseudo-tracks exiting from them are identified. We study the various contributions to the single-photon angular resolution using Monte Carlo simulations and compare them with the experimental data and find that they are in excellent agreement. The distribution of the azimutal angle of pair conversions shows a bias due to the non-cylindrical-symmetric structure of the detector. This bias would average out for a long duration exposure on a space mission, but for this pencil-beam characterisation we have ensured its accurate simulation by a double systematics control scheme, data taking with the detector rotated at several angles with respect to the beam polarisation direction and systematics control with a non-polarised beam. We measure, for the first time, the polarisation asymmetry of a linearly polarised gamma-ray beam in the low energy pair creation regime. This sub-GeV energy range is critical for cosmic sources as their spectra are power laws which fall quickly as a function of increasing energy. Abstract

We consider associated production of dark matter with single top quark, in a simplified dark matter model with spin-0 mediators. The produced top quark is polarized and the polarization depends on the CP of the mediator. We calculate both the cross-section and top polarization for these processes. We compute angular asymmetries which demonstrate the difference between the polarization expected for the scalar or pseudoscalar mediator. Both the cross section and top polarization are sensitive to the CP property of the mediator, depending on the mediator mass. Abstract

In this paper a general method to measure the longitudinal polarization of $\tau$ lepton in the process $pp \rightarrow Z^{0} \rightarrow \tau\tau$ is described. The method of optimal observable allows to distinguish between the $\tau$ lepton helicity states with maximum possible sensitivity. The optimal observable for the main $\tau$ decay modes ($e/\mu\nu\nu$, $\pi\nu$, $\rho\nu$, $a_{1}\nu$) that can be identified by CMS or ATLAS detectors is described. The analyzing power for $\tau$ polarization can be further gained by taking into account a correlation between longitudinal spin states of $\tau^{+}$ and $\tau^{-}$. The theoretical systematic uncertainty on the $\tau$ polarization measured using the $\tau \rightarrow 3\pi\nu$ decays is estimated to be $(\Delta P_{\tau})_{model} = (1.41 \pm 1.37)\times 10^{-4}$. This value is approximately 50 times smaller than the best uncertainty on $\tau$ polarization measurement given by combination of all LEP results. An approach to propagate the measured $\tau$ polarization averaged over the $Z^{0}$ lineshape and parton density functions to the electroweak parameters is also discussed.

Abstract

In the near future, fundamental interactions at high-energy scales may be most efficiently studied via precision measurements at low energies. A universal language to assemble and interpret precision measurements is the so-called SMEFT, which is an effective field theory (EFT) where the Standard Model (SM) Lagrangian is extended by higher-dimensional operators. In this paper we investigate the possible impact of the DUNE neutrino experiment on constraining the SMEFT. The unprecedented neutrino flux offers an opportunity to greatly improve the current limits via precision measurements of the trident production and neutrino scattering off electrons and nuclei in the DUNE near detector. We quantify the DUNE sensitivity to dimension-6 operators in the SMEFT Lagrangian, and find that in some cases operators suppressed by an O(30) TeV scale can be probed. We also compare the DUNE reach to that of future experiments involving atomic parity violation and polarization asymmetry in electron scattering, which are sensitive to an overlapping set of SMEFT parameters., 23 pages, 4 figures; v2, agrees the version published in JHEP

Abstract

International audience; We consider measurements of exclusive rare semi-tauonic b-hadron decays, mediated by the $b \rightarrow s \tau ^+ \tau ^-$ transition, at a future high-energy circular electron–positron collider (FCC-ee). We argue that the high boosts of b-hadrons originating from on-shell Z boson decays allow for a full reconstruction of the decay kinematics in hadronic $\tau $ decay modes (up to discrete ambiguities). This, together with the potentially large statistics of $Z\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ , opens the door for the experimental determination of $\tau $ polarizations in these rare b-hadron decays. In the light of the current experimental situation on lepton flavor universality in rare semileptonic B decays, we discuss the complementary short-distance physics information carried by the $\tau $ polarizations and suggest suitable theoretically clean observables in the form of single- and double- $\tau $ polarization asymmetries.

Abstract

We revisit the measurement of the polarization fraction, $P$, and the measurement of the polarization angle of partially linearly-polarized gamma rays using their conversion to $e^+e^-$ pairs in the field of a nucleus. We show that an inappropriate definition of the azimuthal angle, $\varphi$, used to reference the orientation of the final state degrades the precision of the measurement of $P$, by comparison to the optimal case where the bisector angle of the electron and of the positron momenta is used. We then focus on the lowest part of the energy spectrum, below $\approx 10\,$MeV, where a large part of the statistics lie for a cosmic source. We obtain the value of the polarization asymmetry, $A$, of pair conversion at threshold and we show that in the case where the correct expression is used for $\varphi$, the measured value of $A$ tends to the limit., Comment: Published to Astroparticle Physics (2016)

Abstract

The cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies exhibit a large-scale dipolar power asymmetry. To determine whether this is due to a real, physical modulation or is simply a large statistical fluctuation requires the measurement of new modes. Here we forecast how well CMB polarization data from \Planck\ and future experiments will be able to confirm or constrain physical models for modulation. Fitting several such models to the \Planck\ temperature data allows us to provide predictions for polarization asymmetry. While for some models and parameters \Planck\ polarization will decrease error bars on the modulation amplitude by only a small percentage, we show, importantly, that cosmic-variance-limited (and in some cases even \Planck) polarization data can decrease the errors by considerably better than the expectation of $\sqrt 2$ based on simple $\ell$-space arguments. We project that if the primordial fluctuations are truly modulated (with parameters as indicated by \Planck\ temperature data) then \Planck\ will be able to make a 2$\sigma$ detection of the modulation model with 20--75\% probability, increasing to 45--99\% when cosmic-variance-limited polarization is considered. We stress that these results are quite model dependent. Cosmic variance in temperature is important: combining statistically isotropic polarization with temperature data will spuriously increase the significance of the temperature signal with 30\% probability for \Planck., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables. Abstract

Final results are presented from the inclusive measurement of deep-inelastic polarised-muon scattering on longitudinally polarised deuterons using a $^6$LiD target. The data were taken at $160~{\rm GeV}$ beam energy and the results are shown for the kinematic range $1~({\rm GeV}/c)^2 < Q^2 < 100~({\rm GeV}/c)^2$ in photon virtuality, $0.004 4~{\rm GeV}/c^2$ in the mass of the hadronic final state. The deuteron double-spin asymmetry $A_1^{\rm d}$ and the deuteron longitudinal-spin structure function $g_1^{\rm d}$ are presented in bins of $x$ and $Q^2$. Towards lowest accessible values of $x$, $g_1^{\rm d}$ decreases and becomes consistent with zero within uncertainties. The presented final $g_1^{\rm d}$ values together with the recently published final $g_1^{\rm p}$ values of COMPASS are used to again evaluate the Bjorken sum rule and perform the QCD fit to the $g_1$ world data at next-to-leading order of the strong coupling constant. In both cases, changes in central values of the resulting numbers are well within statistical uncertainties. The flavour-singlet axial charge $a_0$, {which is identified in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ renormalisation scheme with the total contribution of quark helicities to the nucleon spin}, is extracted from only the COMPASS deuteron data with negligible extrapolation uncertainty: $a_0 (Q^2 = 3~({\rm GeV}/c)^2) = 0.32 \pm 0.02_{\rm stat} \pm0.04_{\rm syst} \pm 0.05_{\rm evol}$. Together with the recent results on the proton spin structure function $g_1^{\rm p}$, the results on $g_1^{\rm d}$ constitute the COMPASS legacy on the measurements of $g_1$ through inclusive spin-dependent deep inelastic scattering., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

17 pp. (2003)., A thorough analysis is presented on the benefits gained for the left-right asymmetry $A_{LR}$ and beam polarisation measurements by adding a longitudinal polarised positron beam to the $e^+e^−$ linear collider TESLA. Two centre of mass energies were considered, 91 and 500 GeV, where it is assumed that data was collected with a total luminosity of 30 $fb^{−1}$ and 500 $fb^{−1}$ respectively. In the analysis we consider 4-bunch spin-spin configurations setups according to the Blondel scheme and an alternative scheme. The results of these operating modes are compared to the case where the beam polarisations are measured by polarimeters which have a precision of 0.5% and to the situation where only the electron beam is polarised. Whereas a dramatic improvement in the statistical error of ALR is achieved at 91 GeV by the application of the alternative Blondel four-spin configuration scheme, the gain at 500 GeV is rather moderate and is in the range 50 to 70 % for $A_{LR}$=0.15 and about 300% for $A_{LR}$=0.5.

10 pp. (2000)., We investigate associated production of selectrons and the lightest neutralino (LSP) in the process $e^- + \gamma -->\tilde \chi^0_1 + \tilde e^-_{L/R}$ with the selectron subsequently decaying into an electron and the LSP. Total cross sections and various polarization asymmetries are calculated for photons produced by Compton backscattering of a polarized laser beam at an $e^+e^-$ linear collider with CMS energy $\sqrt{s_{ee}}=500$ GeV and with polarized beams. The total cross section and in particular the polarization asymmetries show a characteristic dependence on the gaugino mass parameter $M_1$. Therefore this process is suitable for testing the GUT relation $M_1=M_2\cdot{5/3}\tan^2\theta_W $.

12 pp. (2000)., The results of a complete one-loop calculation for the production of chargino pairs in electron-positron collisions, including the option of polarized beams, are presented. The calculation has been performed in the on-shell renormalization scheme. Applications to the integrated cross section, to the forward-backward asymmetry for unpolarized beams, and to the left-right asymmetry show that the higher-order effects have a sizeable influence on the theoretical predictions and therefore should be properly taken into account for detailed studies in the MSSM.

Physical review letters 84(12), 2584 - 2588 (2000). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.84.2584, We present a measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry A_|| in photoproduction of pairs of hadrons with high transverse momentum p_T. Data were accumulated by the HERMES experiment using a 27.5 GeV polarized positron beam and a polarized hydrogen target internal to the HERA storage ring. For h+h- pairs with p_T^h_1 > 1.5 GeV/c and p_T^h_2 > 1.0 GeV/c, the measured asymmetry is A_|| = -0.28 +/- 0.12 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (syst.). This negative value is in contrast to the positive asymmetries typically measured in deep inelastic scattering from protons, and is interpreted to arise from a positive gluon polarization., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

9 pp. (1999)., If extra gauge bosons are observed at the LHC or at a linear $e^+e^-$ collider, the reaction $e^+e^- \to \nu \bar\nu \gamma$ can give information on the couplings ($W' \nu l$) and ($Z' \nu \bar\nu$). The total cross section and polarization asymmetries are the most sensitive observables for such a measurement. Small systematic errors are crucial to obtain reasonable coupling constraints, especially for a high luminosity collider.

22 pp. (1999)., Assuming a light Higgs boson is discovered, its nature may remain unknown in case that no supersymmetric particles are found. The detection and study of heavier Higgs particles is then of great interest. For this purpose the Compton-collider option of a high energy e+e- linear collider is optimal both to produce Higgs bosons and to reveal their CP-parity. Assuming realistic photon luminosities for various configurations of laser and linac polarizations, we study the heavy, neutral MSSM Higgs signals for the most relevant decay modes as well as their corresponding backgrounds. The MSSM H and A Higgs bosons with masses up to a ~80% of the linac c.m.s. energy may be observed and their CP-parity tested for Higgs masses ~450 GeV, at the $\gamma\gamma$ mode of a ~1 TeV linear collider.

152 pp. (1995)., A novel approach to study electroweak physics at one-loop level in generic ${\rm SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y}$ theories is introduced. It separates the 1-loop corrections into two pieces: process specific ones from vertex and box contributions, and universal ones from contributions to the gauge boson propagators. The latter are parametrized in terms of four effective form factors $\bar{e}^2(q^2)$, $\bar{s}^2(q^2)$, $\bar{g}_Z^2(q^2)$ and $\bar{g}_W^2 (q^2)$ corresponding to the $\gamma\gamma$, $\gamma Z$, $ZZ$ and $WW$ propagators. Under the assumption that only the Standard Model contributes to the process specific corrections, the magnitudes of the four form factors are determined at $q~2=0$ and at $q^2=m^2_Z$ by fitting to all available precision experiments. These values are then compared systematically with predictions of ${\rm SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y}$ theories. In all fits $\alpha_s(m_Z)$ and $\bar{\alpha}(m_Z^2)$ are treated as external parameters in order to keep the interpretation as flexible as possible. The treatment of the electroweak data is presented in detail together with the relevant theoretical formulae used to interpret the data. No deviation from the Standard Model has been identified. Ranges of the top quark and Higgs boson masses are derived as functions of $\alpha_s(m_Z)$ and $\bar{\alpha}(m^2_Z)$. Also discussed are consequences of the recent precision measurement of the left-right asymmetry at SLC as well as the impact of a top quark mass and an improved $W$ mass measurement.

10 pp. (1995)., Leptons, quarks and gauge bosons are assumed to be pointlike particles in the Standard Model. Stringent bounds on the radii of quarks and leptons and their weak anomalous magnetic moments can be derived from the high-precision measurements at LEP and SLC. We find a model-independent bound ofR≲10−17 cm for quark and lepton radii. HERA will provide complementary information on the electromagnetic static properties of the quarks and the parameters of the charged quark currents.

29 pp. (1992)., We present a spectator quark model calculation of the Cabibbo-enhanced non-leptonic decays of the lowest lying charm baryons $Λ_c, Ξc$ and $Ω_c$ decaying into non-charm ground state baryons and mesons. We employ covariant quark model wave functions to describe the ground state baryons and mesons. They are obtained by boosting rest frame wave functions to equal velocity frames. The non-leptonic decay amplitudes are then obtained in terms of two wave function overlap parameters which we fit to the experimental data. We discuss general features of the flavour and helicity composition of the final states in the quark model approach. We emphasize thatW-exchange contributions are of crucial importance for the description of non-leptonic charm baryon decay data. We calculate rates and polarization asymmetry parameters and compare them to existing data as well as to soft-meson plus current algebra calculations.
