Animals frequently experience temperature fluctuations in their natural life cycle, including periods of low temperatures below their activity range. For example, poikilothermic animals are known to enter a hibernation-like state called brumation during transient cooling. However, the knowledge regarding the physiological responses of brumation is limited. Specifically, the impact of exposure to low-temperature conditions outside the range of temperature compensation on the subsequent circadian behavioral rhythms remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of transient cooling on the behavioral circadian rhythm in the non-avian reptile, the bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps). Under constant light (LL) conditions at 30 °C, the animals exhibited a free-running rhythm, and exposure to low temperatures (4 °C) caused a complete cessation of locomotion. Furthermore, we revealed that the behavioral rhythm after rewarming is determined not by the circadian phase at the onset or the duration of cooling, but by the timing of cooling cessation. Thanks to their exceptional diversity, teeth are among the most distinctive features of vertebrates. Parameters such as tooth size, shape, number, identity, and implantation can have substantial implications for the ecology and certain social behaviors of toothed species. Despite decades of research primarily focused on mammalian dentition, particularly using the laboratory mouse model, squamate reptiles ("lizards" and snakes) offer a wide array of tooth types and dentition variations. This diversity, which includes differences in size, shape, function, and replacement capacity, provides invaluable opportunities for investigating these fundamental properties. The central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps), a popular pet species with well-established husbandry practices, is of particular interest. It features a broad spectrum of morphs and spontaneous mutants and exhibits a wide range of heterodont phenotypes, including variation in the size, shape, number, implantation, and renewal of teeth at both posterior and anterior positions. These characteristics position the species as a crucial model organism for developmental studies in tooth research and for gaining deeper insights into evolutionary patterns of vertebrate dentitions. In this article, we provide an overview of the current understanding of squamate dentition, its diversity, development, and replacement. Furthermore, we discuss the significant advantages offered by squamate species as model organisms for investigating the evolutionary and developmental aspects of vertebrate dentition. OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of transmucosal euthanasia solution to induce euthanasia. ANIMALS 6 bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps). METHODS An initial dose of euthanasia solution containing pentobarbital and phenytoin sodium was administered transmucosally in conscious lizards (100 mg/kg pentobarbital dose), followed by a second dose 20 minutes later (400 mg/kg pentobarbital dose). The presence of movement, leakage of euthanasia solution, behaviors consistent with oral irritation, respiratory rate, heart rate, palpebral and corneal reflex, and response to noxious stimuli were recorded until death, confirmed by the absence of Doppler cardiac flow and cardiac electrical activity. The time to loss of all parameters was calculated. Postmortem evaluation allowed for histopathologic evaluation of the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract to detect potential mucosal damage from the alkaline euthanasia solution. RESULTS The median time to death was 300 minutes (range, 300 to 360 minutes), median time to respiratory arrest was 30 minutes (range, 30 to 50 minutes), and median time to loss of deep pain response was 30 minutes (range, 20 to 50 minutes). Signs consistent with oral irritation occurred in 4 of 6 (66.7%) lizards, including 2 lizards that exhibited whole-body spasms after euthanasia solution administration. Histopathologic changes indicating peracute mucosal ulceration, suspected to be from caustic causes, were identified in 1 (1/6 [16.7%]) lizard. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Transmucosal euthanasia solution administration resulted in clinical euthanasia within 6 hours. This method should be utilized only after premedication with analgesic and/or anesthetic medications due to the potential for acute mucosal ulceration and behaviors that may be distressing in client-owned animals. This study describes the clinical, gross, and histologic findings in 17 cases of aneurysms in bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps). The clinical presentation ranged from incidental to sudden and unexpected death. The affected vasculature was predominantly arterial; however, based on the topographical locations of the lesions, gross structure, and drainage, some veins were likely involved. Magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography scans of 1 animal showed a large aneurysm of the internal carotid artery extending from near its aortic origin into the caudal head. Aneurysms were organized in 5 groups based on their anatomical locations: cephalic, cranial coelom (for all near the heart), caudal coelom (for the mesenteric vessels and descending aorta), limbs, and tail. The cranial coelomic region was the most prevalent location. Gross findings were large hematomas or red serosanguineous fluid filling the adjacent area, as most of the aneurysms (94%) were ruptured at the time of the study. The main histological findings were degenerative changes of the vessel walls characterized by moderate to severe disruption of the collagen and elastic fibers of the tunica media and adventitia (100%), followed by thickening of the intima with thrombi formation (54%) and dissecting hematoma of the vessel wall (47%). Vasculitis (29%), mineralization (6%), and lipid deposits (6%) in the vessel wall were observed occasionally. Based on these findings, the vascular dilations and ruptures observed in bearded dragons likely are associated with weakness of the vessel walls caused by degenerative changes in the intimal and medial tunics. Hematology is a common diagnostic assay for evaluation of health in veterinary species. Several manual methods exist to evaluate the leukocyte component of reptile complete blood counts; however, no single method has been proven reliable for all reptiles. To investigate the analytical variability and agreement of commonly used leukocyte quantification methods, blood was collected from 10 clinically healthy bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) and analyzed in triplicate using Natt-Herricks (NH) solution, eosinophilic leukopet (LO), and estimated white blood cell counts on peripheral blood smears made from fresh whole blood or blood anticoagulated with lithium heparin (LH). To investigate interobserver variability, blood film white blood cell estimates were generated by both a novice veterinary student and a boarded clinical pathologist and analyzed for agreement. Analytical variability was highest using the LH blood film estimate by a boarded clinical pathologist (21.0%), followed by the student's NH method (20.8%), fresh whole blood film estimate from the clinical pathologist (16.6%), eosinophilic LO (student; 8.7%), and blood film estimates using fresh whole blood (6.5%) and LH blood (4.5%), read by the student. Bland Altman plots revealed that agreement occurred between LO and NH methods and between the two blood film estimate methods; Passing-Bablok regression analysis revealed constant and proportional error between LO and both estimate methods and between NH and both estimate methods. Agreement occurred between the veterinary student and clinical pathologist for both blood smear leukocyte estimates. Bearded dragons are reptiles that are quite popular as pets. There are many factors of disease that can infect bearded dragons. The environment and feed affect the level of disease threat, such as parasitic infection in the gastrointestinal tract. Data information related to parasitic gastrointestinal infections in bearded dragons in Indonesia is still limited, so supporting examinations are necessary to help diagnose. A total of 38 fecal samples were collected from the bearded dragon in Cijeruk Bogor. Samples were examined by simple flotation method, Ziehl Neelsen staining, and counting the number of parasitic eggs. All samples were positive for gastrointestinal parasite infections such as Choleoeimeria sp., Isospora amphiboluri, Cryptosporidium spp., ascarid egg, and oxyurid egg. The average number of Choleoeimeria sp. and Isospora amphiboluri oocysts were 8730 and 51.281 oocysts per gram of feces. The average number of helminth eggs per gram was 290 and 2325 for ascarid and oxyurid, respectively. Most of the infected bearded dragons do not show significant clinical symptoms. The number of oocysts and worm eggs per gram of feces showed mild and high results.

A 5-yr-old male central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) presented with a 3 day history of left forelimb lameness, minimal muscle tone, and absent pain sensation distal to the midhumerus. Computed tomography (CT) revealed thickened and hypoattenuating soft tissues adjacent to the left scapulohumeral and left neck regions with no abnormal contrast enhancement. The suspected left external jugular vein in this region was ill defined and small, with filling defects, consistent with the appearance of a venous thrombus. Focal ultrasound of the left side of the neck confirmed a thrombus in this location, just cranial to a jugular venous valve. The patient was treated with supportive care and started on clopidogrel as an antithrombotic treatment. Clinical improvement was minimal following this visit, and the patient presented again 5 months later after declining significantly. On follow-up imaging at this visit, a suspected cardiac mass was seen on echocardiography. A fine-needle aspirate of the mass at that time was suspicious for a sarcoma; however, the sample was nondiagnostic. The previously identified thrombus could not be detected on ultrasonography at this visit. The owner ultimately decided to pursue hospice care at home and no additional imaging or further workup was performed. This is the first report in reptiles describing a venous thrombus using diagnostic imaging. Given the reported occurrence of aneurysms and thrombi in bearded dragons in clinical practice, this case demonstrates the use of an important tool for diagnosis of these conditions. A female spayed bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) of unknown age presented with a 48 h history of anorexia and lethargy. On presentation, the patient had a black beard, sunken eyes, and a full coelomic cavity on palpation, although no specific thickening or masses were noted. Diagnostic investigations were conducted in the form of radiographs and ultrasonography. The owner elected euthanasia due to deterioration in the patient's condition. Gross and microscopic postmortem examination revealed a torsion and volvulus of the gastrointestinal tract through a rupture in the mesentery, with marked red-black, segmental discoloration to the intestines. Limitations of this study include no further diagnostic tests other than imaging and decision to euthanize hindering the ability to explore surgical correction. A 2-yr-old female bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) presented to the clinic exhibiting lameness and significant swellings bilaterally in the carpal region. On physical examination the lizard was determined to be in obese body condition and pododermatitis was observed on the palmar aspects of both carpi. The rest of the examination was unremarkable. Radiographs revealed opacities present in both carpal joints with possible fluid accumulation. Biochemistry revealed hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. A joint aspirate was performed and submitted for cytology and culture. The sample was sterile and only inflammatory cells were seen. Despite these results, the swelling initially improved with daily lincomycin 5 mg/kg intramuscularly (IM) but recurred after 1 month, and the lizard was referred to a specialist center for further investigations. A tissue biopsy was performed and submitted for histology and culture. Histopathologic examination revealed periarticular soft tissue ectopic bone characterized by a proliferation of ectopic cartilage and both lamellar and woven bone with hematopoietically active bone marrow within a fibrous connective tissue stroma. Bacterial culture revealed a scant growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Serratia marcescens. The lizard received ceftazidime 20 mg/kg every 72 h IM for 3 wk. To evaluate the pharmacodynamic effects and pharmacokinetics of a single intramuscular (IM) injection of alfaxalone in central bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) when injected at a cranial versus a caudal site. Prospective, masked, randomized crossover study. A total of 13 healthy bearded dragons weighing 0.48 ± 0.1 kg. Alfaxalone (10 mg kg–1) was administered IM to 13 bearded dragons in the triceps muscle (cranial treatment) or the quadriceps muscle (caudal treatment) separated by 4 weeks. Pharmacodynamic variables included movement score, muscle tone score and righting reflex. Blood was obtained from the caudal tail vein using a sparse sampling methodology. Plasma alfaxalone concentrations were determined using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, and pharmacokinetic analysis was performed using nonlinear mixed-effects modeling. Differences in variables between injection sites were analyzed using a nonparametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test for paired data with significance set at p ≤ 0.05. Time to loss of righting reflex score was not different, median (interquartile range), between cranial and caudal treatments [8 (5–11) and 8 (4–12) minutes, respectively, p = 0.72]. Time to recovery of righting reflex was also not different between cranial and caudal treatments [80 (44–112) and 64 (56–104) minutes, respectively, p = 0.75]. Plasma alfaxalone concentrations were not significantly different between treatments. The population estimate (95% confidence intervals) for volume of distribution per fraction absorbed was 1.0 (0.79–1.20) L kg–1, clearance per fraction absorbed was 9.6 (7.6–11.6) mL minute–1 kg–1, absorption rate constant was 2.3 (1.9–2.8) minute–1 and elimination half-life was 71.9 (52.7–91.1) minutes. Regardless of the injection site, IM alfaxalone (10 mg kg–1) produced reliable chemical restraint in central bearded dragons, appropriate for nonpainful diagnostic procedures or anesthetic premedication. Central bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) are one of the most popular reptile pets in Australia and around the world. Diseases, including metabolic bone disease, periodontal disease, and gastrointestinal endoparasites commonly affect captive animals. To determine the common reasons these lizards were presented to the veterinarian and to establish the prevalence of disease seen in captive P. vitticeps in Australia, this retrospective study evaluated the clinical records of three exotic pet veterinary hospitals. Records from 724 P. vitticeps were analysed, with 70 reasons for presentation and 88 diseases identified across 1000 visits to the veterinarian. Lethargy was the most reported reason for presentation (n = 181). The gastrointestinal tract (18.25%) and skin (18.25%) were the equally most commonly affected organ systems, followed by the musculoskeletal system (15.17%). Endoparasites were the most common single disease process (n = 103), followed by metabolic bone disease (n = 65), skin wounds (n = 59) and periodontal disease (n = 48). Of the patients that presented for routine preventive health examinations (n = 159), 45.30% received some form of intervention to treat or prevent disease. Many of the conditions that were identified by the veterinarians in this study are traditionally correlated with suboptimal husbandry and may be easily prevented. This study identified the common reasons for presentation to the veterinarian and the prevalence of disease in captive P. vitticeps in Australia, providing the first extensive retrospective analysis of objective reference literature for central bearded dragon owners and aspiring reptile veterinarians. Nannizziopsis guarroi, a keratinophilic fungus, is an important cause of dermatomycosis in companion lizards. At present, effective disinfection protocols are unknown and additional information is needed to prevent contamination of surfaces and equipment used in the care of these animals. To this aim, the qualitative in vitro–disinfecting capability of eight commonly used household and laboratory disinfectants (Novalsan®, 3% and 10% dilutions of commercial bleach, Virkon®-S, Lysol® household cleaner with hydrogen peroxide, 70% ethanol, 409®, and household cleaning ammonia) were tested at two different contact times (2 and 10 min) with three different aqueous fungal concentrations of four molecularly confirmed N. guarroi isolates. A positive control after contact with saline was also grown. After contact with disinfectant or saline, the isolates were incubated, and photographic images were taken of plate growth on day 10. Images of each plate were scored using a semiquantitative scoring system. The only disinfectant that completely inhibited growth for all four isolates at both contact times and at all three isolate dilutions was the 10% dilution of commercial bleach. All four isolates grew after contact with ammonia, regardless of contact time or isolate dilution, and the other disinfectants showed variable inhibition of growth that was either isolate or concentration dependent, or both. In conclusion, a minimum of 2 min of exposure to a 10% dilution of commercial bleach is recommended for disinfection of surfaces and instruments contaminated with N. guarroi. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Bacterial infections can play an important role in dermatitis in lizards. The bacterial species Devriesea (D.) agamarum is a known cause of dermatitis, cheilitis and even fatal disease in lizards. Disease has most often been reported in Uromastyx species, but other lizards may also be affected. However, some are asymptomatic carriers, increasing the risk of spreading D. agamarum. Usually, D. agamarum is detected with culture-based methods. It was the aim of this study to establish a real-time PCR assay to expand diagnostic options in routine diagnostics. The presented assay is able to detect D. agamarum in clinical samples, decreasing laboratory turn-around time in comparison to conventional culture-based detection methods. This enables a fast therapeutic approach for affected animals and decreases the risk of spread. (1) Background: Devriesea (D.) agamarum is a potential cause of dermatitis and cheilitis in lizards. The aim of this study was to establish a real-time PCR assay for the detection of D. agamarum. (2) Methods: Primers and probe were selected targeting the 16S rRNA gene, using sequences of 16S rRNA genes of D. agamarum as well as of other bacterial species derived from GenBank. The PCR assay was tested with 14 positive controls of different D. agamarum cultures as well as with 34 negative controls of various non-D. agamarum bacterial cultures. Additionally, samples of 38 lizards, mostly Uromastyx spp. and Pogona spp., submitted to a commercial veterinary laboratory were tested for the presence of D. agamarum using the established protocol. (3) Results: Concentrations of as low as 2 × 104 colonies per mL were detectable using dilutions of bacterial cell culture (corresponding to approximately 200 CFU per PCR). The assay resulted in an intraassay percent of coefficient of variation (CV) of 1.31% and an interassay CV of 1.80%. (4) Conclusions: The presented assay is able to detect D. agamarum in clinical samples, decreasing laboratory turn-around time in comparison to conventional culture-based detection methods. Contrast radiography is used to combat poor coelomic detail encountered in reptilian radiographs. This study describes pneumocoelomography, a novel negative contrast technique using room air in bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps). The feasibility of this technique, its tolerance by the study subjects, and obtained images were evaluated. Six clinically healthy, adult bearded dragons had standard and pneumocoelomogram radiographs performed under anesthesia. Pneumocoelom was induced by insufflating 0.2 mL/mm coelomic length of room air via an over-the-needle catheter introduced into the coelom. Pre-, post-, and positive intravenous contrast-enhanced postpneumocoelom computed tomography scans were also performed. Packed cell volume, total protein, and blood films were evaluated at time of imaging and two weeks postprocedure to assess potential systemic consequences of this technique. Procedures were well tolerated with no adverse anesthetic, recovery, postprocedural, hematologic, or behavioral declines in health status. The pneumocoelomogram consistently revealed the gonads (6/6 cases) in both sexes. There was an inconsistently improved characterization of other coelomic organs: the cardiac silhouette was improved in 4 of 6 cases, trachea in 2 of 6, lungs in 3 of 6, stomach in 3 of 6, cecum in 3 of 6, colon in 5 of 6, and kidneys in 2 of 6. The liver, spleen, and small intestines did not show improved characterization in any case. Room air pneumocoelomography offers a well-tolerated, readily-available technique and provides additional coelomic organ characterization to that of standard radiographs. A 1-yr-old intact female inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented approximately 24 h after observed ingestion of a marble. Orthogonal whole-body radiographs with and without contrast revealed a spherical radiopaque foreign body within the gastric lumen and no passage of contrast material beyond the foreign body, suggestive of pyloric outflow obstruction. The complete blood count showed mild basophilia, and plasma biochemical analysis revealed a moderately elevated creatine kinase. The bearded dragon was placed under general anesthesia, and a rigid endoscope was used to visualize the foreign body at the level of the pylorus. The marble foreign body was suctioned and removed orally using a red rubber catheter and a Luer-lock syringe. The patient recovered uneventfully from the procedure and was sent home with sucralfate and omeprazole after 2 days of hospitalization. This report provides a novel, nonsurgical method for removing smooth spherical foreign bodies from the proximal gastrointestinal tract of bearded dragons. The technique may apply to various small-to-medium–sized reptiles or amphibians that present with spherical foreign bodies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two captive-bred lizards, a Western spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata) and a bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps), were evaluated for anorexia and absence of feces. The iguana had a recent cloacal prolapse, whereas the dragon had a repaired prolapse 20 days earlier. Exploratory celiotomy under anesthesia revealed a devitalized distal colon in the iguana and stenosis of ductal organs in the pelvic cavity in the dragon, leading to colostomies. Stomal stenosis, managed through dilation, was the main complication. Both gained weight within 1000 days post-surgery. At 2,152 days, the iguana weighed 166 g; the dragon, which died at 1,792 days, weighed 274 g. Colostomies may benefit lizards with distal colon or cloaca damage that can still urinate, as demonstrated in this report.

A 5-yr-old, female, inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented with a firm swelling on the ventromedial aspect of the right mandible. Fine-needle aspiration was consistent with blood aspiration; further investigations were declined. Surgical resection was performed successfully with minimal hemorrhage, and resected tissue was sent for histopathology. This was consistent with an aneurysm, fibrosis, and intraluminal fibrosis. Cytological analyses of the oral cavity are necessary for the identification and correct evaluation of lesions in this anatomical region. Literature on this subject in reptiles is scarce, in contrast to other species kept as pets. The main objective of this descriptive study was to evaluate the normal cytological characteristics of the oral cavity of inland bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps). Twenty-eight clinically healthy inland bearded dragons, including juveniles and adult males and females, from private collections were evaluated. Oral samples from the tongue and palate were obtained from each animal. Slides were stained with modified Wright–Giemsa stain and analyzed under an optical microscope. The contents of the slides were mostly hypocellular, with no evidence of microbiological overgrowth or inflammation, and showed mostly keratinized squamous cells; basal epithelial cells were seldom observed. Occasionally, goblet cells were observed in tongue samples, but were rare in palate samples. The results of this study contribute to a better characterization of the normal oral mucosa of inland bearded dragon and are in accordance with the few previously published studies. Nutrition is an important aspect of inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) health, and improper diet is thought to be a predisposing factor for many health disorders. The objective of this study was to survey owners of bearded dragons to learn more about their feeding practices and supplement use. Self-selecting bearded dragon owners were invited to participate in the survey if they were >18 yr of age or had guardian consent and resided in Canada or the United States. A survey titled "Nutritional Survey of Bearded Dragon Dietary Habits in North America" was available online following research ethics board approval from the University of Guelph, Canada. In total, 405 responses representing subadult and adult bearded dragons were evaluated. The most common diet offered consisted of 1–25% larval and adult insects (each) and 51–75% plant material. Approximately one half of the survey participants, especially the younger respondents, were feeding diets with <50% plant material and >50% insects. Berries were the most common plant material offered, superworms (Zophobas morio) and hornworms (Manduca sexta) were the most common larval insects offered, and house crickets (Acheta domesticus) were the most common adult insects offered. Insects were commonly dusted with calcium, vitamin D3, and multivitamins, but plant material was not dusted. These results highlighted the requirment for the development of clear nutritional guidelines outlining the type, quantity, and frequency of food items and supplements offered and the requirement of further investigations to determine the ideal diet for this common pet lizard. The aim of this study is to develop a reference interval for plasma protein electrophoresis for wild free‐roaming central bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps). This will assist the veterinarian in diagnosing and monitoring diseases in wild and captive animals. The study group consisted of 29 wild central bearded dragons of which 22 were males and 7 were females. The plasma samples were obtained from animals in a previous study and were stored frozen at −20°C for 2–3 years before analysis. Plasma protein electrophoresis was performed on 100 uL of plasma. The data were evaluated for the difference between reproductively active females and pooled males with non‐reproductively active females as well as the difference between biochemical and protein electrophoresis albumin. Biochemical albumin was found to be significantly higher than electrophoresis albumin in all animals, with a mild proportional bias present. Plasma protein electrophoresis identified albumin, α − 1 and 2, β − 1 and 2 and γ fractions. The reproductively active females in this study exhibited results that were distinct from pooled males and non‐reproductively active females. This study provides a reference interval for plasma protein electrophoresis in central bearded dragons that can be used as a tool for health and disease monitoring and diagnosis. A central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) presented with periorbital swelling and exophthalmos. A retrobulbar mass was detected, and enucleation with the mass was performed. Histologically, the mass was composed of a dense sheet and interlacing bundles of round to polygonal to short spindle-shaped cells with occasional bizarre mononuclear and multinucleated giant cells. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells had various degrees of membranous and/or cytoplasmic granular reactivity to anti-ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 and anti-CD204 antibodies. Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells had irregular nuclei and abundant cytoplasm with membrane-bound electron-dense lysosomes and endoplasmic reticula. These findings were consistent with a histiocytic sarcoma. The present study provided a detailed description of retrobulbar histiocytic sarcoma for the first time in a central bearded dragon. Abstract Background Spondylitis is an inflammation of the vertebrae that leads to a destructive process with exuberant new bone formation. Osteomyelitis can produce a distortion of the bone architecture, degenerative joint changes and ankyloses of adjacent vertebrae. In reptiles, intervertebral discs are absent, so the term discospondylitis is not used. In lizards, vertebral lesions have not been well studied. The present paper describes the first case of Klebsiella sp.-related spondylitis in a pet lizard (Pogona vitticeps). Case presentation A 2-year-old, female bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented for clinical examination due to a decreased activity level, decreased appetite and constipation. Blood tests showed no remarkable alterations. The haemogram showed normal parameters with relative lymphocytosis, although the absolute number of lymphocytes did not differ from the reference values. A computed tomography scan revealed a mixed osteolytic-proliferative bone lesion diffusing to the first and last tracts of the pre-sacral vertebrae together. A small amount of material obtained from the spinal swelling was sampled with an aseptic technique for bacterial culture, which was positive for Klebsiella sp. The antibiogram revealed sensitivity to enrofloxacin, marbofloxacin, and chloramphenicol and intermediate sensitivity to gentamicin. Complete return to spontaneous feeding was achieved 15 days after the beginning of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapy. Conclusions In veterinary medicine, spondylitis represents a well-known disease in small companion animals. In mammals, the most common aetiologic agents are fungi and bacteria. Antibiotic therapy was set based on the antibiogram, and marbofloxacin was chosen at a dosage of 10 mg/kg subcutaneously (SC) once per day (SID). After only 7 days of antibiotic therapy, the clinical condition improved significantly; the patient started feeding and drinking spontaneously and gained weight. This case should remind clinicians of the importance of always performing antibiograms before choosing any antibiotic therapy. Considering reptiles, there have been few papers about spinal diseases, mostly regarding snakes and a few about Iguana iguana. Relative to other species of saurians, the literature remains lacking.

Cyclooxygenase (COX) 1 has been shown to increase significantly in inflamed ophidian skin and chelonian muscles. Nonselective COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitors, such as ketoprofen, could therefore reduce inflammation more effectively than preferential COX-2 inhibitors in reptiles. The objective of this study was to evaluate potential adverse effects of ketoprofen in bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps). Thirteen adult bearded dragons were divided into three groups receiving daily intramuscular injections for 14 days in a blinded randomized study design. Group 1 (n = 5) received saline, Group 2 (n = 4) received ketoprofen at 2 mg/kg (diluted 1:10 with saline) and Group 3 (n = 4) received ketoprofen at 20 mg/kg (undiluted). Biochemical values, fecal occult blood (FOB) tests, and blood clotting time were assessed before and after the 2-wk treatment. Renal, digestive, hepatic, and muscular histopathology was evaluated. Clinically, injection-site reactions were noted in Group 3 only (n = 1/4). No other clinical adverse effects were detected. No changes were detected in plasma biochemical values and clotting times before and after treatments, nor were changes detected between control and treatment groups. No lesion associated with ketoprofen toxicity was detected on histologic examination of the kidney, liver, and gastrointestinal tract. Lesions of muscular necrosis at the injection sites were of higher magnitude in Group 3 compared to Group 1. In conclusion, daily intramuscular administration of diluted ketoprofen at 2 mg/kg for 14 days did not cause adverse effects in a small number of bearded dragons, whereas severe muscular necrosis was detected at 20 mg/kg. A two-year-old female lizard (Pogona vitticeps) suffered from loss of appetite and no defecation on 25 September 2019. It was sent to our teaching hospital on 30 September, 2019 for medical treatment. Clinical examination showed that the sick lizard had poor spirit and vitality, dehydration, abdominal distention; solid mass in the body cavity was found by palpation. Laboratory examination showed that the sick lizard suffered from liver injury, inflammation and lipidemia. Imaging examination showed that there were multiple under perforations in the body cavity. The ultrasound examination showed that there were many dark areas of echo in the abdomen, which was initially diagnosed as follicular retention. Bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) are one of the most popular reptile pets globally. As their longevity increases with better care and nutrition, conditions common to many older animals, such as neoplasia, may be increasing in incidence. Many tumours are not amenable to surgical resection and are poorly responsive to systemic chemotherapy. Treatment modalities such as cryosurgery and radiation may achieve a good short-term result, but recurrence is common. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) increases the permeability of tumour cells to many chemotherapeutics such as bleomycin and cisplatin, which would otherwise require high systemic doses to be effective. An adult Bearded dragon was diagnosed with a fibrosarcoma of the rostral maxillary mucocutaneous region, based on an incisional biopsy of the lesion. As surgical resection was considered unlikely to be successful, so ECT combined with cisplatin was used to treat the animal. Mass regression was observed and, 2 years after treatment, it remains in remission with no macroscopic evidence of tumour recurrence. While ECT is a well-accepted modality in veterinary oncology, there have only been a few reports of its use in reptiles. Nannizziopsis guarroi infection in lizards presents therapeutic challenges, with reports of poor clinical outcomes, including antifungal toxicity, incomplete clearance of infection, and recrudescence of infection being common. The case presented here describes the successful treatment of an N. guarroi infection using systemic terbinafine and environmental disinfection in a captive-bred central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps). The lizard presented with darkly colored cutaneous lesions, and mycologic culture samples were identified as N. guarroi using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization–time of flight. Based upon the lack of clinical resolution of cutaneous lesions, weight loss, and reduced appetite, initial treatment with voriconazole was discontinued. Terbinafine was prescribed, and weekly environmental disinfection with sodium hypochlorite was initiated until cutaneous clearance of the fungus was confirmed by negative culture, histopathology, and N. guarroi quantitative polymerase chain reaction from cutaneous swab. Terbinafine treatment was discontinued after 80 days. There were no clinical signs of toxicity associated with the prolonged treatment, and the lizard has not developed any cutaneous lesions or illness in more than 2 yr of clinical follow-up. Although the ideal treatment of N. guarroi is still being investigated, this case demonstrates a promising and safe treatment option for an increasingly common and devastating disease. Two central bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps), a 3-y-old male and a 5-y-old female, were diagnosed with different manifestations of lymphoma at the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory between 2019 and 2020. The 3-y-old male was presented for postmortem evaluation and was in poor body condition. Microscopically, nearly all examined organs contained variable numbers of neoplastic round cells. Neoplastic cells in the stomach and liver had moderate immunoreactivity to CD3 consistent with multicentric T-cell lymphoma, and non-neoplastic lymphocytes infiltrating the stomach mass had strong immunoreactivity to Pax5. The 5-y-old female had an ulcerated oral mass located in the right lingual gingiva submitted as an excisional biopsy. Microscopically, the mass was composed of large numbers of neoplastic round cells in the epithelium and connective tissue that were strongly and diffusely positive for CD3 and frequently positive for Pax5, consistent with a dual-positive, localized, epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma. Neoplastic and non-neoplastic lymphocytes did not stain with CD20 or CD79a. Neoplasms are increasingly reported as a cause of morbidity and mortality in reptiles. Here, we report the first case of Cryptosporidium cf. avium from an inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) from a wildlife sanctuary in Victoria, Australia. Molecular characterisation was conducted by PCR-coupled sequencing of regions in the small subunit of nuclear RNA (SSU), actin and large subunit of nuclear RNA (LSU) genes. The sequences obtained grouped with those of C. ornithophilus and other C. avium genotypes/variants originating from reptiles or birds. We discuss this case in relation to the current state of knowledge of C. avium of birds and reptiles, considering provenance and environment (agricultural, pet industry, wildlife, zoo or wildlife park) as well as clinical context, and pathological changes associated with cryptosporidiosis in these host animals.

Ranaviral infections have been associated with mass mortality events in captive and wild amphibian, fish, and reptile populations globally. In Australia, two distinct types of ranaviruses have been isolated: epizootic haematopoietic necrosis virus in fish and a Frog virus 3-like ranavirus in amphibians. Experimental studies and serum surveys have demonstrated that several Australian native fish, amphibian, and reptile species are susceptible to infection and supported the theory that ranavirus is naturally circulating in Australian herpetofauna. However, ranaviral infections have not been detected in captive or wild lizards in Australia. Oral-cloacal swabs were collected from 42 wild lizards from northern Queensland and 83 captive lizards from private collections held across three states/territories. Samples were tested for ranaviral DNA using a quantitative PCR assay. This assay detected ranaviral DNA in 30/83 (36.1%) captive and 33/42 (78.6%) wild lizard samples. This is the first time molecular evidence of ranavirus has been reported in Australian lizards.

A 4-yr-old female central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) with a history of tenesmus was found dead 1 month after surgical debulking of a palpable caudal coelomic mass. At necropsy, a 2.5-cm-diameter, firm, lobulated, tan–yellow mass was associated with the wall of the pelvic canal and bilateral masses were present in the caudal pharynx (0.6 and 3.0 cm in diameter), the largest of which was soft and dark red. Histologically, the mass within the pelvic canal arose from the coelomic wall and consisted primarily of fibrocollagen with myxoid to cystic regions, and mixed inflammatory infiltrates. Additional findings included granulomatous dermatitis, myositis/cellulitis, coelomitis, encephalitis, and pneumonia. Vasculitis was detected in multiple organs, and in the pharynx resulted in aneurysmal dilation and perivascular hemorrhage leading to masslike lesions. Within all lesions, scattered macrophages contained oval, weakly basophilic, Gram-positive, slightly refractile, 1–2 µm-diameter ovoid organisms consistent with microsporidia. A diagnosis of systemic microsporidiosis characterized by lymphohistiocytic and heterophilic vasculitis with medial hypertrophy and fibrinoid necrosis was made. Using DNA sequencing, the organism was identified as Encephalitozoon pogonae. Encephalitozoon pogonae should be considered a differential diagnosis for vasculitis and aneurysms in bearded dragons. A 3-yr-old female bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented to the Exotic Pet and Wildlife Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the National Autonomous University of Mexico with a 3-day history of right hindlimb swelling. Radiographs revealed lysis of the right stifle and tarsal bone. Fine-needle aspiration from the stifle revealed large numbers of macrophages and giant cells, and Ziehl-Neelsen stain revealed intracytoplasmic acid-fast bacilli-like bacteria. Standard aerobic culture was performed, with negative results. Pain management was provided with meloxicam (0.2 mg/kg PO q24h) and tramadol (11 mg/kg PO q12h); the owner declined antimicrobial therapy. Three weeks later, radiographs revealed the progression of the lytic lesions to the distal femur, proximal tibia, and tarsal bones. One month later, the patient presented for left hindlimb swelling. Follow-up radiographs revealed a total loss of the right stifle and the tibiotarsal and tarsometatarsal joints, as well as new lytic lesions at the left stifle and tibiotarsal joints. Based on the grave prognosis, the lizard was euthanized. At necropsy, granuloma-like lesions were found at the stifles and the coxofemoral, tibiotarsal, and tarsometatarsal joints. Imprints made from these lesions revealed acid-fast bacilli. No other gross lesions were identified. Microscopic review of the tissues revealed severe granulomatous osteomyelitis and myositis, as well as a severe histiocytic and heterophilic hepatitis with acid-fast intrahistiocytic bacilli. Polymerase chain reaction results confirmed these bacteria as nontuberculous mycobacteria. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first postmortem report of septic arthritis associated with Mycobacterium spp. in a bearded dragon; only two other cases have been reported, both without postmortem findings. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of tiletamine–zolazepam as a sedative drug in central bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) and determine if efficacy differed based on administration route. Ten healthy, adult central bearded dragons received tiletamine–zolazepam (20 mg/kg) either intramuscularly (IM) or subcutaneously (SC) in the cranial body in a randomized, blinded, complete crossover study with a minimum washout period of 2 wk between treatments. Respiratory rate, heart rate, body position, response to restraint, spontaneous movement, righting reflex, and jaw tone were evaluated. All bearded dragons received flumazenil (0.05 mg/kg, SC) in the cranial body 45 min after the initial tiletamine–zolazepam injection. Righting reflex was lost in all bearded dragons receiving tiletamine–zolazepam IM, but only half of the animals lost righting reflex after SC injection. Jaw tone was lost in 90% (9/10) of animals receiving IM injections compared to 40% (4/10) following SC injections. Recovery from sedation was similar between route of administration (IM: 69 ± 39 min, SC: 57 ± 33 min, P= 0.43). Postsedation food intake was suppressed 2 h after return of righting reflex. Based on the findings of this study, IM administration of tiletamine–zolazepam results in a deeper and more consistent plane of sedation in bearded dragons when compared to the SC route. A 3-year-old, male intact, pet inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) presented with a history of diarrhea, progressive inappetence and weight loss. A palpable cranial celomic mass was identified on physical examination and confirmed to be hepatic in origin by celomic ultrasonography. Hematologic and biochemical abnormalities were mild and consistent with inflammation, regenerative anemia, and hepatocellular injury. Fine needle aspiration of the liver masses was suggestive of amoebiasis and the patient was humanely euthanized. PCR and Sanger DNA sequencing of liver aspirates were supportive of Entamoeba infection, although definitive speciation was not possible. Pathogenic amoebiasis due to infection by E. invadens has been reported in a wide range of reptiles and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in these species.

Central bearded dragons, Pogona vitticeps, are ectothermic heliotherms native to dry and arid regions and are often kept as exotic pets in colder less arid countries. They do however, often fall sick resulting in sudden death. This is now known to be caused by bacterial infections such as Listeria monocytogenes and Porphyromonas pogonae sp. This study therefore, aimed to identify microorganisms present in the buccal cavity of the central bearded dragon (P. vitticeps) in Namibia. In order to achieve this, oral swabs were taken from a bearded dragon found in a garden in Windhoek, Namibia and grown in nutrient agar. Colony morphology was described before Gram’s staining to differentiate the bacteria. The automated VITEK®2 system was used to identify the bacteria. On nutrient agar, opaque yellow circular colonies were observed after 24hrs incubation at 37°C. A gram-positive coccus shaped bacteria was observed. VITEK®2 analysis identified the bacteria as Micrococcus luteus. There has not been a study on the microbiota of the buccal cavity of the central bearded dragon in Namibia.

The present paper reports the case of a 3 years old, female Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps) presenting lethargy, anorexia, weight loss, and anemia and marked leukocytosis at CBC. The majority of leukocytes were lymphocytic/lymphoblastic cells (97%). Immunocytochemical staining of blood smears marked for CD3 (neg) and CD79a (pos) suggested immunophenotype B. The patient died after one month from diagnosis. Histology evidenced lymphoid infiltration in the heart, spleen, liver, kidneys and gut. In addition, in the bone marrow a massive infiltration of lymphoid cells confirmed the diagnosis of leukemia. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the CD79a positivity of a large part of infiltrating lymphoid cells indicating a B cells immunophenotype of the neoplastic population. The presence of lymphocytosis and multiorgan infiltration supported the diagnosis of lymphocytic leukemia. Finally, a revision of the literature has also been made.

Abstract Background Hibernation is a physiological state exploited by many animals exposed to prolonged adverse environmental conditions associated with winter. Large changes in metabolism and cellular function occur, with many stress response pathways modulated to tolerate physiological challenges that might otherwise be lethal. Many studies have sought to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of mammalian hibernation, but detailed analyses are lacking in reptiles. Here we examine gene expression in the Australian central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) using mRNA-seq and label-free quantitative mass spectrometry in matched brain, heart and skeletal muscle samples from animals at late hibernation, 2 days post-arousal and 2 months post-arousal. Results We identified differentially expressed genes in all tissues between hibernation and post-arousal time points; with 4264 differentially expressed genes in brain, 5340 differentially expressed genes in heart, and 5587 differentially expressed genes in skeletal muscle. Furthermore, we identified 2482 differentially expressed genes across all tissues. Proteomic analysis identified 743 proteins (58 differentially expressed) in brain, 535 (57 differentially expressed) in heart, and 337 (36 differentially expressed) in skeletal muscle. Tissue-specific analyses revealed enrichment of protective mechanisms in all tissues, including neuroprotective pathways in brain, cardiac hypertrophic processes in heart, and atrophy protective pathways in skeletal muscle. In all tissues stress response pathways were induced during hibernation, as well as evidence for gene expression regulation at transcription, translation and post-translation. Conclusions These results reveal critical stress response pathways and protective mechanisms that allow for maintenance of both tissue-specific function, and survival during hibernation in the central bearded dragon. Furthermore, we provide evidence for multiple levels of gene expression regulation during hibernation, particularly enrichment of miRNA-mediated translational repression machinery; a process that would allow for rapid and energy efficient reactivation of translation from mature mRNA molecules at arousal. This study is the first molecular investigation of its kind in a hibernating reptile, and identifies strategies not yet observed in other hibernators to cope stress associated with this remarkable state of metabolic depression.

The bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) is a common species in the pet reptile trade and in zoological collections. Despite this, only a few reviews detailing common causes of mortality have been published. The goal of this retrospective study was to compile information related to the presence and prevalence of various diseases in bearded dragons in several private and one zoological collection. Findings from 36 animals, necropsied over a 20-year period were categorized on the basis of the cause of death or euthanasia and the organ system affected. Multiple contributors to death were identified in a subset of animals (n = 12; 33.33%) and were counted in more than one category. The most common contributors to death by category were inflammatory (infectious or non-infectious) diseases (n = 25; 69.44%), followed by chronic/degenerative diseases (n = 17; 47.22%). Diseases or conditions that were systemic, or affected the hepatobiliary system, were the most commonly implicated in death. The most frequent histological findings included hepatic fatty change, renal tubular epithelial pigmentation and the presence of faveolar hyaline-like material. Although Chi square testing did not reveal an association between these common findings and comorbidities, a statistically significant association was found between chronic/degenerative causes of death and renal tubular epithelial pigment. Chi square testing of categorical variables, including contributors to death, primary organ(s) affected, sex, age class and institution, identified statistically significant associations between males and chronic/degenerative disease (P = 0.043) and inflammatory contributors to death and private collection animals (P = 0.039). A 4 yr old, female bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented after a 2 day history of lethargy and inappetence. On physical examination, the patient was quiet, alert, and responsive, with pale mucous membranes and coelomic distention. Initial diagnostics revealed a severe anemia (packed cell volume [PCV], 3%) and hypoproteinemia (total solids [TS], 30 g/L [3 g/dl]). Full-body radiographs revealed decreased coelomic detail suggestive of coelomic effusion. Due to the life-threatening anemia, a whole blood transfusion (WBT) was performed using a bearded dragon (donor A). On day 2, coelomic ultrasound revealed a large volume of effusion and numerous follicles. Coelomic fluid cytology was consistent with acute hemorrhage and egg yolk coelomitis. On day 3, two allogeneic WBTs, each from a different donor animal (donors B and C), were administrated via an intraosseous catheter. The PCV and TS increased to 8% and 38 g/L (3.8 g/dl), respectively. On day 5 the PCV/TS decreased to 7% and 28 g/L (2.8 g/dl), respectively. Due to the suspicion of active hemorrhage, an exploratory coeliotomy was elected. An intraoperative WBT (from donor B) was administrated. The source of hemorrhage was found to originate from the left ovarian pedicle. A final WBT was administrated postoperatively (from donor A). On day 6, the PCV/TS had increased to 17% and 30 g/L (93 g/dl), respectively. Three weeks later, the patient was alert and responsive and the PCV/TS had risen to 30% and 52 g/L (5.2 g/dl), respectively. This is the first report describing the successful administration of five WBTs from several different donors over a short period of time in a bearded dragon with hemocoelom and marked anemia. The aim of the study is to provide haematology and plasma biochemistry reference intervals for wild free‐roaming central bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps). These data will aid the veterinarian in determining the health and husbandry status of the pet bearded dragon. The study group consisted of 130 wild central bearded dragons. The data were assigned into two groups: Breeding Season (BS) from September to November and Non‐Breeding Season (NBS) from December to March. These groups were further divided into sex and reproduction status with females determined to either be gravid or non‐gravid. The 83 male and 47 female dragons were captured in north western New South Wales, Australia, centred around the towns of Bourke, Wanaaring and Tibooburra. Haematological and plasma biochemistry parameters were measured using standard methods. Data were analysed for the effects of sex, season and gravid status. There were significant differences between sexes in PCV, basophils, albumin, globulin, amylase, calcium, phosphate and triglycerides. There were seasonal differences in PCV, basophils, uric acid, glucose, globulin, calcium, phosphate, cholesterol and triglycerides. There were significant differences in phosphate and cholesterol between gravid and non‐gravid dragons within the breeding season. There were variations in haematology and biochemistry parameters depending on sex, season and reproductive status of females. A 3-yr-old male inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) presented for progressive right forelimb lameness of 3-wk duration, anorexia, dyspnea with increased lung sounds, open–mouth-breathing, and compulsive neck thrashing. The owners opted for euthanasia. Necropsy revealed a yellow, opaque, soft tissue mass in the right axillary region dorsal to the brachial plexus. This round focal mass was well demarcated, measuring 1.3 cm in diameter, 0.4 cm in height, and incorporated a large unidentified blood vessel. Histopathology revealed an expansile, infiltrative, unencapsulated, poorly demarcated mass composed of neoplastic spindle cells forming streams and bundles separating adjacent muscle fascicles and infiltrating into surrounding vertebral bone and extending into a bone process. These spindle cells exhibited eosinophilic to amphophilic cytoplasm and a round to oval nucleus with finely stippled chromatin and a mitotic rate of 23 per 10 high-power fields. Immunohistochemistry (smooth muscle actin) identified the mass as a leiomyosarcoma. Despite local neoplastic infiltrates into the surrounding vertebral bone, there were no systemic metastases discovered grossly or on histopathology. The lungs exhibited interstitial mixed inflammation alongside mineralization and edema within the respiratory parenchyma consistent with interstitial pneumonia, which was believed to be the reason for the respiratory signs. Two male inland bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) of 5 and 6 yr of age were presented for anorexia with and without lethargy, respectively. In both cases, a firm, spherical, and mobile mass, measuring 2 cm in diameter, was palpated in the cranio-medial coelom. Radiographs were unremarkable. Ultrasonographic evaluation was highly suggestive of cholecystolithiasis. Coeliotomy confirmed the presence of a markedly enlarged gallbladder containing a cholecystolith in both cases, and cholecystectomies were performed. Both dragons resumed eating after 1–7 days and were doing well 3–6 months postoperatively. The gallbladder wall was unremarkable on histology, and the choleliths were composed of protein and calcium carbonate crystals. Cholecystolithiasis in bearded dragons has been the subject of very few case reports, probably due to its low occurrence. The lack of available data on the diagnosis and management may have led to this condition being underdiagnosed in this species. Ultrasonography was essential to the clinical diagnosis of cholecystolithiasis in our two cases and should be recommended as part of the diagnostic approach of bearded dragons with cranio-medial coelomic masses. Abstract Background Cytokeratins with epitopes in common with those of alpha (acidic and basic) mammalian keratins have been immunohistochemically demonstrated in the epidermis of reptiles. However, there are no reports of immunohistochemical staining patterns of alpha-keratins in other tissues from reptiles. Because the epithelial tumours usually retain the keratin patterns of their normal epithelial origin, it is necessary to know in advance these patterns in the major normal epithelia and organs. We used anti-alpha human keratin AE1 and AE3 monoclonal antibodies to study the staining patterns of alpha-keratins in the major normal epithelia and organs from two reptile species [the bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) and the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta)]. We also studied the immunolocalization of alpha-keratins in squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) in a bearded dragon and two loggerhead turtles. Results Acidic alpha-keratin (AE1 positive) was detected in many of the epithelial tissues of the bearded dragons; however, the detection of basic alpha-keratin (AE3 positive) was much more limited. Alpha-keratins were detected in a greater number of tissues of loggerhead turtles compared with those observed in bearded dragons. In the bearded dragon SCC, all layers of the nests of neoplastic cells, including the cornified layer of the keratin pearls, were strongly reactive with the AE1 antibody. However, a weak reactivity using the AE3 antibody was detected in the basal and intermediate layers of these nests. In the cutaneous SCCs of both sea turtles, acidic alpha-keratin was detected in the basal and suprabasal layers, and in all of the invasive neoplastic cords, while basic alpha-keratin was mainly detected in the invasive neoplastic cords. The pattern observed in the metastases in both turtles consisted of immunohistological detection of acidic alpha-keratin in all metastatic foci, and limited or lack of detection of basic alpha-keratin. Conclusions This study provides, for the first time, information about the immunohistochemical staining patterns of alpha-keratins in normal tissues from bearded dragons and loggerhead sea turtles, and confirms the usefulness of AE1 and AE3 monoclonal antibodies in these reptile species. The use of these antibodies also contributed to a better characterization of SCCs in these species.

Mandibular fractures are a common presentation in reptiles, and most often occur from fighting with cage mates, falls, or iatrogenic trauma from improper handling or getting caught in cage doors/lids. Two cases of a simple, complete, open fracture of the right mandible in bearded dragons are described. In Case 1, a 2.5-year-old female intact bearded dragon presented with a right mandibular fracture after being bitten by a blue tongued skink. In Case 2, 10-month-old, female intact 259-g bearded dragon presented with an iatrogenic right mandibular fracture. External coaptation was applied with a metal wire and dental acrylic molded to the ventral mandible in both cases. A modified tape muzzle was used to reduce movement of the mandible. External coaptation was removed in the Case 1 at 7 weeks and in Case 2 at 9 weeks, with radiographic evidence of calcification at the fracture site. External coaptation with a dental acrylic and a modified tape bandage healed simple, complete, open unilateral mandibular fractures in 2 bearded dragons. The use of this external coaptation allowed the animals to continue with normal activity and did not require esophageal feeding tubes for nutritional support. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An 8-yr-old male bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) presented with lethargy, inappetence, and skin discoloration. Dorsoventral whole body radiographs revealed a homogenous left coelomic mass. A complete blood count revealed leukocytosis and monocytosis, while the plasma biochemistry revealed hypercalcemia, elevated lactate, and elevated creatinine. Coelomic ultrasonography was performed to further characterize the mass before surgical exploration and removal. Ultrasonography revealed a hyperechoic mass that was vascular with a hypoechoic, avascular center consistent with fluid accumulation. An exploratory coeliotomy was performed and the left fat body containing the mass was removed en bloc for histopathologic evaluation. Oil Red O staining confirmed a diagnosis of liposarcoma. A 5-yr-old male central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented for investigation of blood in the voided urates. A small cutaneous mass was detected in the gular region, but the clinical examination was otherwise unremarkable. Fecal parasitology was negative. Initially, further diagnostics were declined and antimicrobial treatment was initiated. At re-examination 1 month later, the gular mass had increased in size and an additional mass was detected within the coelomic cavity. Both masses were surgically excised and diagnosed by histopathology as a high-grade anaplastic sarcoma (gular mass), resembling a histiocytic sarcoma, and a Sertoli cell tumor (coelomic mass). Neither of these have been previously reported in the central bearded dragon. Twenty months post-surgery, the lizard remains well with no recurrence of clinical signs or evidence of tumor re-growth. A 6-yr-old female central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was examined for a 6 month history of increasing coelomic distention, dyspnea, dysorexia, and tenesmus. Complementary examinations revealed hyperuricemia, hyperphosphatemia, increased creatine kinase, and a heterogeneous polycystic mass with peripheral coelomic effusion. An exploratory coeliotomy revealed a mass at the anatomical location of the right ovary and follicular stasis of the left ovary; bilateral ovariectomy was performed. After anatomopathological and bacterial examination, the dragon was diagnosed with benign ovarian teratoma and secondary bacterial infection. The presence of yolk and remnants of the ovary with several cell types originating from different origins, which was confirmed by immunohistological examination, is consistent with ovarian teratoma lesions generally observed in other species. Here, we report the first case of Cryptosporidium cf. avium from an inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) from a wildlife sanctuary in Victoria, Australia. Molecular characterisation was conducted by PCR-coupled sequencing of regions in the small subunit of nuclear RNA (SSU), actin and large subunit of nuclear RNA (LSU) genes. The sequences obtained grouped with those of C. ornithophilus and other C. avium genotypes/variants originating from reptiles or birds. We discuss this case in relation to the current state of knowledge of C. avium of birds and reptiles, considering provenance and environment (agricultural, pet industry, wildlife, zoo or wildlife park) as well as clinical context, and pathological changes associated with cryptosporidiosis in these host animals. Background: A rescued, captive, adult, male, inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented with chronic swelling of the right upper and lower eyelids, with intermittent blepharospasm. Case description: Histopathology revealed a proliferative conjunctivitis, including inflammation of the nictitating membrane, along with a mixed, chronic, inflammatory response. Located on the epithelial surface, were numerous, surface oriented apicomplexan organisms, histologically compatible with Cryptosporidium sp. Molecular characterisation revealed these organisms to be most closely related to C. avium based on amplification and sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene. Conclusions and case relevance: This report describes the diagnosis of spontaneous conjunctivitis involving Cryptosporidium sp. in a reptile; C. avium has not been implicated previously in extra-enteric disease in a non-avian species. Infection by C. avium has only once been reported in lizards and this study provides further evidence that its host range may be broader than anticipated. Inflammatory conditions involving the biliary system in reptiles appear to be rarely described. They are mostly reported as postmortem findings, and their clinical management is therefore not often documented. A 6.5-year-old captive-born, male inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) presented with a 1-year history of intermittent lethargy. On physical examination, a mobile mid-coelomic mass was palpable. A computed tomography scan was performed and showed marked gallbladder distension with several dependent choleliths and intrahepatic biliary dilatation. Cholecystectomy was performed and Enterococcus faecalis was cultured. The cholecystoliths were analyzed as 95% calcium carbonate, 5% magnesium carbonate. Based on culture and sensitivity testing, the bearded dragon was treated with 30 mg/kg of oral trimethoprim sulphonamide BID for 14 days. The patient recovered completely and has had no reported issues since. Cholecystectomy is a rarely performed procedure in reptiles and has only been described for treatment of bacterial or protozoal cholecystitis in snakes. This case describes the management, diagnostic techniques, and successful treatment of enterococcal cholecystitis by cholecystectomy in a bearded dragon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
