Preeclampsia (PE) is a severe pregnancy complication characterized by significant alterations in coagulation function. This study aims to analyze the correlation between coagulation function, platelet parameters, and pregnancy outcomes in PE patients. Clinical data, along with blood and urine samples, were collected from 168 PE patients and 128 healthy pregnant women. General demographic and laboratory testing data were recorded, and maternal and fetal outcomes were followed up. Data were analyzed using Kaplan–Meier and logistic regression analyses. In mild PE patients, thrombin time (p = .000), platelet distribution width (PDW) (p = .000), and clot formation time (p = .000) were increased, while prothrombin time (p = .000) and fibrinogen (p = .045) were reduced. With increasing PE severity, prothrombin time (p = .000), platelet count (PLT) (p = .000), mean platelet volume (MPV) (p = .000), plateletcrit (p = .000), maximum amplitude (MA) (p = .000), and coagulation index (p = .001) decreased, whereas activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) (p = .000), thrombin time (p = .002), D‐dimer (p = .026), and PDW (p = .000) increased. Lower prothrombin time (p = .048), PLT (p = .004), and coagulation index (p = .026) or higher APTT (p = .032), thrombin time (p = .044), D‐dimer (p = .023), and PDW (p = .016) were associated with a higher risk of poor pregnancy outcomes. Thrombin time was identified as an independent risk factor (p = .025, OR = 2.918, 95% CI: 1.145–7.436), whereas gestational age was an independent protective factor (p = .000, OR = 0.244, 95% CI: 0.151–0.395). This study demonstrates that specific coagulation and platelet parameters are significantly associated with PE severity and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Background: Dengue, an important cause of fever, spread by bite of infected Aedes mosquito. Sometimes changes of platelet parameters, haematocrit and liver function tests are found in dengue fever. The aims of this study are to find out the prevalence of liver function tests abnormalities in patients with dengue and to find out the abnormalities in platelet parameters in patients with dengue. Methods: Total 300 patients with NS1 antigen and IgM positive or dengue IgG or IgM positive, having no preexisting liver diseases or other superadded infection i.e. hepatitis, malaria, enteric fever causing hepatitis (according to bed head tickets) from January’22 to December’23, admitted in the Sishu-o- Matrimongal Kendra hospital are included in this study. Results: In this study, most of the patients are adults (>18 years to 60 years) male (56.67%). Majority (85.33%) have platelet count >1,00,000/cumm, 8.67% have platelet count <50,000/cumm. Majority of them (92%) have normal mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width and haematocrit. Most of them have plateletcrit lower than normal. Most of the males have aspartate aminotransferase level and alanine aminotransferase level between 40U/L -250U/L. Majority of the females have both aspartate aminotrasferase and alanine aminotransferase level <40U/L. Most of the patients (both males and females) have alkaline phosphatase level less than 128 IU/L. Majority of them (both males and females) have more than normal level of gammaglutamyl transferase level. Most of the patients (both males and females) have total serum bilirubin level 20μmol/L or less. Majority of the patients ( both males and females) have total serum protein level 64 gm/L or less and serum albumin level less than 35gm/L. Conclusion: Dengue, a mosquito borne viral fever, is a condition very commonly encountered in all over India. Along with haematological changes, some liver function tests are also found deranged in dengue patients. Liver involvement in the form of elevated transaminases, GGT, bilirubin, low protein, albumin were found in this study population. The spectrum of hepatic involvement in dengue can vary from asymptomatic biochemical changes to severe liver damage. The haematocrit level of dengue patients are increased significantly indicating the haemoconcentration of the patients. Platelet parameters give information about ongoing destruction of platelets in dengue patients. Aim: This study aimed to assess the platelet parameters and their prognostic value for perinatal outcomes in pregnant women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods: This retrospective study involved 180 participants, 90 pregnant women with SLE and 90 healthy pregnant women. Clinical and demographic variables including routine first-trimester neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and platelet parameters such as platelet distribution width (PDW), mean platelet volume (MPV), plateletcrit (PCT) were compared between the groups. The perinatal outcomes of the whole study group were also compared. Results: SLE patients had lower leukocyte (p = 0.001), lymphocyte (p = 0.001) and platelet counts (p = 0.018), higher PDW (p = 0.002), MPV (p = 0.001), NLR (p = 0.008) and PLR (p = 0.015) and lower PCT (p = 0.015) than the control group. The groups had no significant difference in hemoglobin levels (p = 0.936). SLE patients had higher rates of cesarean section (p = 0.002), small for gestational age (SGA) (p = 0.019) and stillbirth (p = 0.017) and lower birth weight (p = 0.001) than the control group. PCT was a significant predictor of stillbirth with a cut-off value of 0.21, sensitivity of 64.3% and specificity of 83.3% (AUC: 0.843, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Pregnant women with SLE have altered platelet parameters and increased inflammatory markers compared to healthy pregnant women. Methods A comprehensive search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases for relevant articles published up to December 16th, 2023. A random-effects model was employed to pool the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and plateletcrit (PCT) between IBD patients and healthy controls, and subgroup analyses were performed. Results The meta-analysis included 79 articles with 8,350 IBD patients and 13,181 healthy individuals. The results revealed significantly increased PLT and PCT levels (WMD: 69.910, 95% CI: 62.177, 77.643 109/L; WMD: 0.046%, 95% CI: 0.031%, 0.061%), and decreased MPV levels (WMD: -0.912, 95% CI: -1.086, -0.739 fL) in IBD patients compared to healthy individuals. No significant difference was found in PDW between the IBD and control groups (WMD: -0.207%, 95% CI: -0.655%, 0.241%). Subgroup analysis by disease type and disease activity showed no change in the differences for PLT, PCT, and MPV in the ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease groups, as well as the active and inactive groups. Notably, the active group exhibited significantly lower PDW levels than the control group (WMD: -1.138%, 95% CI: -1.535%, -0.741%). Conclusions Compared with healthy individuals, IBD patients display significantly higher PLT and PCT and significantly lower MPV. Monitoring the clinical manifestations of platelet abnormalities serves as a valuable means to obtain diagnostic and prognostic information. Abstract Background To examine the value of early echocardiographic indices for the right ventricular function combined with platelet(PLT) parameters for predicting bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. Methods This retrospective study included infants with gestational age (GA) below 32 weeks, who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit(NICU). The detection rate of tricuspid regurgitation jet velocity (TRVJ), ventricular septal flattening, pulmonary artery widening, right ventricular dilation, and right atrial enlargement on the 7th day of life (DOL 7) were compared between BPD and non-BPD infants. Echocardiographic indices of the right ventricular function including tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) and right ventricular index of myocardial performance (RIMP) were measured on 1 day of life (DOL 1)、on DOL 7 and on 14 day of life (DOL 14) respectively. The PLT parameters including the PLT count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet hematocrit (PCT) level, and platelet distribution width (PDW) were measured on the DOL 1,DOL 7, and DOL 14. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between these parameters and BPD. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to assess the predictive value of the right ventricular function indices and PLT parameters for BPD. Objective: The activation of platelets in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) triggers inflammation and hemodynamic abnormalities, contributing to the development of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Despite this, research into the relationship between plateletcrit (PCT) levels and DKD is sparse, with inconsistent conclusions drawn regarding the connection between various platelet parameters and DKD. This highlights the necessity for comprehensive, large-scale population studies. Therefore, our objective is to explore the association between PCT levels and various platelet parameters in relation to DKD. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, hematological parameter data were collected from a cohort of 4,302 hospitalized Chinese patients. We analyzed the relationships between PCT, platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), platelet large cell ratio (P-LCR), and DKD, along with the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR), and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic potential of these parameters. Results: DKD patients exhibited significantly higher PCT levels compared to those without DKD. Multivariate regression analysis identified elevated PCT and PLT levels as potential independent risk factors for both DKD and UACR, while lower MPV levels might serve as independent protective factors for eGFR. The areas under the ROC curve for PCT in relation to DKD and UACR (≥30 mg/g) were 0.523 and 0.526, respectively. The area under the ROC curve for PLT in relation to UACR (≥30 mg/g) was 0.523. Conclusion: PCT demonstrates a weak diagnostic value for T2DM patients at risk of developing DKD and experiencing proteinuria, and PLT shows a similarly modest diagnostic utility for detecting proteinuria. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics involved in DKD. Additionally, incorporating these markers into routine clinical assessments could enhance risk stratification, facilitating early interventions and personalized management strategies. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship of sarcopenia with systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), monocyte to high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR) and platelet parameters in geriatric patients. METHODS: We designed a cross-sectional retrospective study in patients presented to a geriatric outpatient clinic for the first time. The diagnosis of sarcopenia was made in accordance with the EWGSOP2 criteria. SIRI, MHR, mean platelet volume /Platelet count (MPV/Plt), platelet distribution width /Platelet (PDW/Plt), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were calculated from fasting blood test results at the time of admission. RESULTS: Among 262 patients, 79 patients (30.1%) with sarcopenia had significantly higher frequencies of delirium, hypothyroidism, chronic kidney disease and probable depression (p=0.010; p=0.018; p=0.034; p<0.001). Malnutrition scores and cognitive impairment scores were significantly lower in sarcopenic group (p<0.001 for both). Patients with sarcopenia had significantly higher MHR, SIRI and C-reactive protein values than patients without sarcopenia (p<0.001; p=0.001 and p=0.006, respectively). No significant difference was found between the groups in terms of MPV/Plt, PDW/Plt, PLR (p=0.605; p=0.920; p=0.510). Area under the curve for MHR was 0.675 (95% CI: 0.604-0.746, p<0.001) and 0.601 (95% CI: 0.523-0.679, p=0.010) for SIRI. A sensitivity of 72.2% and a specificity of 55.7% were found for MHR>0.99. CONCLUSIONS: The finding of higher MHR and SIRI in geriatric sarcopenia patients supports low-grade chronic inflammation in the pathophysiology of sarcopenia. Context: The role of platelet parameters as markers of inflammation in various diseases is now in limelight. The interaction between cancer cells and platelets is a well-established phenomenon. Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a premalignant disorder with a malignant transformation rate of 2–8%. This study aimed to evaluate platelet parameters in OSMF and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in the background of OSMF. This cross-sectional study was performed using secondary data retrieved between January 2019 and December 2019 in the Department of Oral Pathology and the Hematology Laboratory. Methods and Materials: The data retrieved included 44 histopathologically proven OSCC in a background of OSMF (group III) and 36 OSMF (group II). The haematological parameters of these selected cases were retrieved from the Sysmex XN-1000 automated hematology analyser database. A control group (group I) comprises 50 subjects with normal (negative/unflagged) haematological parameters. All data were statistically analysed using SPSS 20.0. The significance level of tests was set at 5%. Results: The mean platelet volume (MPV) (9.60 [±0.95] P < 0.001), platelet distribution width (PDW) (10.45 [±1.9], P < 0.001), platelet large cell ratio (PLCR) (21.70 [±7.98], P < 0.001), and the ratio of mean platelet volume to total platelet count (MPV/PLT) (0.03 [0.01], P < 0.001) were lower in group III when compared to the other two groups. Conclusions: Platelet parameters may be used as indices in the OSCC in the background of OSMF. However, large-scale prospective studies are necessary to evaluate the utility of these parameters during the malignant transformation of OSMF, thereby encouraging prompt treatment to prevent morbidity and mortality.

Background: Immune dysfunction and inflammation participate in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD). Abnormal levels of inflammatory markers, namely, red cell distribution width (RDW) and platelet distribution width (PDW), were detected in BD. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for various mental disorders including BD was linked to changes in these inflammatory mediators. Hence, we aimed to assess the impact of ECT on PDW and RDW in patients with BD. Methods: Seventy-two patients aged ≥ 16 were enrolled in the current prospective cohort study over 6 months, diagnosed as BD based on DSM-IV and indicated for ECT and complete blood count (CBC) drawn pre-ECT and after four ECT sessions. Results: By the end of the ECT sessions, we noticed a significant elevation in PDW with lowering in RDW levels. However, no significant differences were detected before and after ECT regarding platelet (PLTs) count, mean platelet volume (MPV), and Plateletcrit (PCT). Conclusion: ECT seems to improve the CBC-derived inflammatory markers (RDW and PDW) subsequently, improving the underlying inflammatory process in BD without disturbing PLT homeostasis which support its anti-inflammatory role in BD. Background: The goal was to investigate the relationship between serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), P-selectin, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), platelet parameters, and coagulation function indexes and postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with traumatic fracture. Methods: A total of 150 patients with traumatic fractures after DVT were selected as the DVT group, and 150 patients with traumatic fractures without DVT during the same period were selected as the non-DVT group. Serum VEGF, P-selectin, HDL-C, platelet parameters including platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT), platelet large cell ratio (P-LCR), and plasma coagulation function indexes including thrombin time (TT), prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thrombin time (APTT), fibrinogen (FIB), and D-dimer (D-D) were measured. Pearson's correlation was performed to analyze the correlation between serum VEGF, P-selectin, and coagulation function indexes, and binary logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors of DVT. Results: Serum VEGF and P-selectin in the DVT group were higher while HDL-C was lower than those in the non-DVT group (p < 0.05). Serum VEGF and P-selectin were negatively correlated with plasma D-D and FIB (p < 0.05), and serum HDL-C was negatively correlated (p < 0.05). Compared with the non-DVT group, MPV, PDW, and P-LCR in the DVT group were decreased (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that PLCR was a risk factor for postoperative DVT in patients with traumatic fractures (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Serum VEGF and P-selectin are higher and HDL-C is lower in patients with DVT after postoperative traumatic fracture than in patients without DVT. Combined detection of serum VEGF, P-selectin, HDL-C, and coagulation function indexes may help to reduce the risk of DVT. Objective: Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication that jeopardizes the health of both the mother and the fetus. Platelet parameters are closely linked to the severity of preeclampsia. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic potential of platelet parameters in the early second trimester for the detection of preeclampsia. Methods: A total of 840 participants from the Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical College were included in the study, consisting of 327 healthy pregnant women, 209 with mild preeclampsia, and 304 with severe preeclampsia. General clinical data and platelet parameters for these three groups of pregnant women were collected, and differences among them were compared. In addition, univariate analysis and logistic regression were used to identify preeclampsia risk factors, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was conducted to assess the predictive value of platelet parameters. Results: Platelet count was not found to significantly differ between the healthy and preeclampsia groups. However, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width (PDW), and platelet?large cell ratios (P-LCR) were observed to be significantly higher in the preeclampsia group than the healthy group. After adjusting for confounding factors (such as age, gestational week at blood sampling, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and body mass index during the second trimester), it was determined that PDW and P-LCR could be considered effective predictors of preeclampsia. Conclusion: In clinical practice, P-LCR and PDW hold potential predictive value for preeclampsia.

The levels of platelet distribution width of children with severe influenza (A and B) infection was significantly dropped, compared with non-severe group (P < 0.05). Background: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among females worldwide. The role of platelets in cancer progression and metastasis have been evaluated in various cancers. This study is done to assess the association between platelet parameters and invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix. Materials and Methods: Eighty cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix were retrospectively collected from the medical record department. Values of platelet parameters such as platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT), platelet-large cell ratio (P-LCR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), platelet-neutrophil ratio (PNR), and platelet-monocyte ratio (PMR) are collected from automated hematology analyzer. These values were compared with 80 healthy controls which were randomly selected. Values of platelet parameters were also compared among Federation Internationale de Gynecolgie et d'Obstetrique (FIGO) stages in 80 cases. Result: Mean ± standard deviation (SD) for platelet count, MPV, PDW, PCT, P-LCR, PLR, PNR, and PMR among cases were 316 ± 100.37 × 109/L, 9.98 ± 0.96, 11.11 ± 2.27, 0.31 ± 0.092, 24.09 ± 7.62, 179.35 ± 85.53, 63.89 ± 42.10, and 492.29 ± 192.86, respectively, and in controls were 300.30 ± 79.40 × 109/L, 9.97 ± 0.83, 10.97 ± 1.80, 0.59 ± 2.65, 23.94 ± 6.81, 137.72 ± 50.52, 60.07 ± 26.68, and 563.65 ± 602.55, respectively. The PLR between cases and controls was statistically significant. The platelet count and PCT between stages was statistically significant wherein the values increased from stage II to stage IV. Conclusion: Platelet parameters are importance in cervical cancer. PLR, platelet count, and PCT are platelet parameters that can be used as predictors and prognostic parameters in cervical cancer. These parameters are cost-effective and can be considered in low resource settings. The study aims to analyze the effect of platelet parameters, including mean platelet volume and platelet large cell ratio, on linezolid-related thrombocytopenia in patients.Methods: The effect of platelet parameters on linezolid-related thrombocytopenia was identified by univariate and multivariate logistic regressions. A Kaplan–Meier survival analysis was carried out to compare the survival of patients who developed linezolid-related thrombocytopenia with patients who did not.Results: Thrombocytopenia occurred at a rate of 41.5% (66/159) after linezolid therapy in hospitalized patients. Platelet parameters, including the difference in mean platelet volume (MPV/fL=0.08 (− 1.2– 0.9)vs-0.5 (− 1.5– 0.3), (OR, 0.459; P = 0.001), the difference in platelet large cell ratio (PLCR/fL=0.9 (− 5.1– 6.2)vs-3.8 (− 8.6– 2.4), (OR, 1.156; P = 0.001), baseline platelet counts (OR, 0.995; P = 0.006) and duration of linezolid therapy≥ 10d (OR, 1.346; P = 0.007), were significantly associated with linezolid-related thrombocytopenia in hospitalized patients. In addition, other risk factors which also are associated with linezolid-related thrombocytopenia include baseline red blood cells, co-medication with parecoxib and co-medication with caspofungin. Accumulated in-hospital mortality of patients with thrombocytopenia was significantly higher than that of patients without thrombocytopenia during linezolid treatment (19.7% vs 8.6%, P = 0.003).Conclusion: The difference in mean platelet volume, the difference in large platelet ratio, baseline platelet counts and duration of linezolid therapy≥ 10d significantly affected the development of linezolid-related thrombocytopenia in hospitalized patients.Keywords: linezolid, platelet parameters, thrombocytopenia, risk factors

Objective To investigate whether the blood donors' coagulation status may lead to apheresis platelet aggregation in vitro. Methods Thirty blood donors with aggregation in apheresis platelets collected by AMICUS blood cell separator no less than 3 times previously and occurred when the last time of apheresis donation were observed in aggregated group (referred to as the experimental group); Thirty donors without aggregation in apheresis platelets collected by AMICUS blood cell separator no less than 3 times were observed in the control group simultaneously. The basic platelet parameters in the two groups, including Plt, MPV, PDW, Pet, P-LCR were detected by automatic blood cell analyzer (BC-3000Plus), and thromboelastogram indexes including reaction time(R), kinetics time(K), kinetics of clot development(α), maximum amplitude (MA) and coagulation index(CI) were tested by Thrombosis elastography (TEG) before collection. With SPSS24.0 software, t test was used to compare the differences between the two groups. Results The CI value in experimental group was significantly different from that of the control group (0.48± 1.00 vs -0.99 ±1.96, P< 0.05), and there was no significant difference in all above basic platelet parameters and other TEG parameters (P>0.05 ) . Conclusion The coagulation status of blood donors may be an independent risk factor for the in vitro aggregation of apheresis platelets.

Abstract Background Multiple etiologies contribute to recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) including immunological, endocrine, anatomical, genetic and infection but more than 50% of cases remain unexplained. Evidences of thrombotic and inflammatory processes were observed at maternal-fetal interface and considered pathological findings in most RPL cases including unexplained cases. This study aimed to evaluate the association between RPL and several risk factors: platelet parameters, coagulation factors, antiphospholipid syndrome, and thyroid function. Methods This is an unmatched case-control study that included 100 RPL and 100 control women. Anthropometric and health data were collected and a gynecologist examined participants to assure fitting the inclusion criteria. Platelet parameters [including Mean Platelet Mass (MPM), Concentration (MPC) and Volume (MPV)] and ratios (MPV/Platelet, MPC/Platelet, MPM/Platelet, Platelet/Mononuclear cells), coagulation markers [Protein C (PC), Protein S (PS), Antithrombin III, D-dimer], antiphospholipid antibodies [Anti-phospholipid (APA), Anti-cardiolipin (ACA) and anti-B2-glycoprotein 1], Lupus anticoagulant, Antinuclear antibodies, and thyroid function (Thyroid stimulating hormone and anti-thyroid peroxidase) were measured. Results Mean ages of cases and controls at marriage were 22.5 years for both, and their current ages were 29.4 and 33.0, respectively. 92% of cases and 99% of controls aged blow 30 years at marriage. 75% of cases have 3–4 miscarriages and 9% have ≥ 7 miscarriages. Our results indicated significantly lower male/female age ratio (p = .019), PC (p = .036) and PS (p = .025) in cases compared to controls. Plasma D-dimer (p = .020) and antiphospholipid antibodies [ACA (IgM and IgG), APA (IgM)] were significantly higher in cases compared to controls. No significant differences were observed between cases and controls concerning APA (IgG), anti-B2-glycoprotein 1 (IgM and IgG), Lupus anticoagulant, Antinuclear antibodies, platelet parameters, thyroid markers, family history of miscarriage, consanguineous marriage, and other health data. Conclusions This is the first study that investigated the association between platelet, coagulation, antiphospholipid, autoimmune and thyroid parameters, and RPL in Palestinian women. Significant associations between male/female age ratio, PC, PS, D-dimer, ACA (IgM, IgG), APA (IgM) and RPL were observed. These markers could be used in evaluating RPL. These findings confirm the heterogeneous nature of RPL and emphasize the need for further studies to find out risk factors for RPL.

Context: The role of platelet parameters as markers of inflammation in various diseases is now in limelight. The interaction between cancer cells and platelets is a well-established phenomenon. Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a premalignant disorder with a malignant transformation rate of 2-8%. This study aimed to evaluate platelet parameters in OSMF and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in the background of OSMF. This cross-sectional study was performed using secondary data retrieved between January 2019 and December 2019 in the Department of Oral Pathology and the Hematology Laboratory. Methods and Materials: The data retrieved included 44 histopathologically proven OSCC in a background of OSMF (group III) and 36 OSMF (group II). The haematological parameters of these selected cases were retrieved from the Sysmex XN-1000 automated hematology analyser database. A control group (group I) comprises 50 subjects with normal (negative/unflagged) haematological parameters. All data were statistically analysed using SPSS 20.0. The significance level of tests was set at 5%. Results: The mean platelet volume (MPV) (9.60 [±0.95] P < 0.001), platelet distribution width (PDW) (10.45 [±1.9], P < 0.001), platelet large cell ratio (PLCR) (21.70 [±7.98], P < 0.001), and the ratio of mean platelet volume to total platelet count (MPV/PLT) (0.03 [0.01], P < 0.001) were lower in group III when compared to the other two groups. Conclusions: Platelet parameters may be used as indices in the OSCC in the background of OSMF. However, large-scale prospective studies are necessary to evaluate the utility of these parameters during the malignant transformation of OSMF, thereby encouraging prompt treatment to prevent morbidity and mortality. Objective: To investigate the correlation between blood lipid, platelet parameters, homeostasis model insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) and polysomnography (PSG) parameters in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) complicated with hypertension and their predictive value. 163 patients with OSAHS who were admitted to Shuyang Hospital Affiliated to Xuzhou Medical University from January 2020 to November 2022 were selected, and they divided into simple OSAHS group (78 cases) and hypertension group (85 cases) according to whether they were combined with hypertension. Blood lipid, platelet parameters and HOMA-IR, PSG parameters in the two groups were measured. Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between blood lipid, platelet parameters, HOMA-IR and PSG parameters. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the risk factors of OSAHS complicated with hypertension. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the value of blood lipid, platelet parameters and HOMA-IR in predicting OSAHS complicated with hypertension. Results: Triglycerides (TG), Total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), mean platelet volume (MPV), HOMA-IR, micro arousal index (MAI), apnea hypopnea index (AHI) and oxygen Reduction Index (ODI) in the hypertension group were higher than those in the simple OSAHS group (P<0.05), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was lower than that in the simple OSAHS group (P<0.05). The TG, TC, LDL-C, MPV, HOMA-IR in the hypertension group were positively correlated with MAI, AHI and ODI (P<0.05), while HDL-C was negatively correlated with MAI, AHI and ODI (P<0.05). High body mass index, high HOMA-IR, TG and MPV levels were the risk factors for patients with OSAHS complicated with hypertension (P<0.05). The area under the curve of OSAHS patients with hypertension predicted by combining TG, MVP and HOMA-IR was higher than that predicted by the above three indicators alone. Conclusion: The TG, MPV levels and HOMA-IR in patients with OSAHS complicated with hypertension are significantly increased, and are positively correlated with MAI, AHI and ODI. Hematological changes play a great role in malaria pathogenesis through platelets and platelet parameters. However, the changes in platelet parameters are not clearly described in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to compare platelet parameters and their correlation with parasitemia among malaria-infected adult patients and healthy adults.Methods: An institutional-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted involving 186 (93 malaria-infected patients and 93 healthy adults) study participants using a convenient sampling technique at Jinella health center, Harar, Eastern Ethiopia, from July 10–August 10, 2022. Five milliliters of venous blood were collected from each study participant, and platelet parameters were analyzed using a Unicel (DxH 800) automated hematologic analyzer. A drop of blood was taken from malaria-suspected patients for blood film preparation. Results between two groups were compared using the Mann–Whitney U-test. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the relationships between two continuous variables. A P-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results: Platelet, plateletcrit, and mean platelet volume of malaria-infected patients were significantly lower as compared with healthy adults (103 x103cells/μL vs 268 x103cells/μL, 0.13 fl vs 0.23 fl, and 9.6 fl vs 15.3 fl), respectively). Conversely, platelet distribution width and platelet large cell ratio were higher in malaria-infected patients than healthy adults (19.2% vs 15.3% and 0.35% vs 0.29%), respectively). Parasitemia levels had a moderately inverse correlation with platelet count (r= − 0.419) and a weakly positive correlation with mean platelet volume (r=0.278).Conclusion: The platelet, plateletcrit, and mean platelet volume of malaria-infected patients were significantly lower as compared with healthy adults. Malaria parasitemia had a moderate inverse correlation with platelet count and a weak positive correlation with mean platelet volume. Objective To analyze the changes of blood routine and platelet related parameters of the elderly apheresis platelet donors since the first donation, so as to ensure the health and platelet quality of the elderly apheresis donors. Methods From 2019 to 2021, a total of 69 apheresis platelet donors in our center, aged 55-60 years old, involving 3400 occasions of donation, were enrolled in this study. The change trends of blood routine and platelet related parameters before and after the age of 55 were retrospectively analyzed. One way ANOVA was used for group comparison, and Pearson correlation analysis of platelet parameters was performed. Results The values of blood routine and platelet related parameters were higher in men than in women (P0.05). As for the males in comparison of the parameters before 55 years old, WBC decreased significantly after 55 years of age (P0.05). The changes of PDW, MPV and P-LCR were consistent and showed a linear positive correlation. Conclusion The blood routine tests of the elderly apheresis platelet donors were all within the normal range and the proportion was relatively stable. Personalized blood donation schemes should be customized for the elderly blood donors and the health management of blood donors should be implemented.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of Huaiqihuang granule in the treatment of children with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and its effect on platelet parameters, peripheral blood Treg/Th17 and CD4/CD8. Methods: From August2019 to May 2021, 60 children with immune thrombocytopenia treated in our hospital were selected as research subjects. Children were divided into Huaiqi Huang granule group according to the 1:1 simple distribution principle and the matched group. The matched group was given conventional drug-injection human immunoglobulin treatment, and the group was treated on the basis of the matched group.Both groups were treated for 3 months to observe the efficacy of treatment, platelet parameters, peripheral blood Treg/Th17 and CD4/CD8. Results: Post-treatment, the total effective rates of Huaiqihuang granule group were 96.7 %, which were higher than 80.0 % of matched group (P＜0.05).The onset time of Huaiqihuang granule group were shorter than that of the matched group, and the duration of the curative effect were longer than that of the matched group. there were difference compared between the two groups (P＜0.05).The platelet count and platelet parameters in the two groups Post-treatment were higher than those pretherapy, and the Huaiqihuang granule group were also higher than that in the matched group (P＜0.05).The Peripheral blood Treg/Th17 and CD4/CD8 in both groups post-treatment were higher than that pretherapy, and the Huaiqihuang granule group were higher than that in the matched group (P＜0.05). Conclusion: Huaiqihuang granules in the treatment of children with primary immune thrombocytopenia can effectively improve the therapeutic effect, shorten the onset time and prolong the duration of the effect, and can also effectively improve the platelet count and platelet parameters in children, increase Peripheral blood Treg/Th17 and CD4/CD8. Objective: To investigate the clinical significance of changes in platelet parameters in patients with secondary failure of platelet recovery (SFPR) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Methods: In this retrospective study, 79 patients who had undergone allogeneic HSCT (allo-HSCT), including 40 patients with SFPR and 39 patients without SFPR, were recruited. The evaluated parameters were platelet count (PLT), plateletcrit (PCT), platelet-large cell ratio (P-LCR), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), the incidence of CMV infection after allo-HSCT, and the correlation of SFPR and CMV infection in patients who had undergone allo-HSCT. The control group included 107 healthy donors. Results: The SFPR group had significantly lower megakaryocyte counts, PLT, and PCT and significantly higher P-LCR, MPV, and PDW than the healthy donor and non-SFPR groups. The incidence of CMV infection was higher in SFPR patients than in non-SFPR patients. Among the patients with SFPR, P-LCR, MPV, and PDW were lower in those with CMV DNA >8000 copies/mL than in those with CMV DNA <8000 copies/mL (P < .05 for all); the CMV viral load was slightly negatively correlated with MPV (P = .0297) and P-LCR (P = .0280). Conclusion: We demonstrate for the first time that the level of platelet activation in SFPR patients, which was closely related to CMV infection, was higher than that in that in non-SFPR patients, and higher CMV load was associated with the inhibition of platelet activation. Acute leukemia (AL) is a hematological malignancy with high morbidity and mortality that is caused by abnormal hematopoietic stem cells. AL can change the parameters, quality, and function of platelets through numerous mechanisms, resulting in bleeding and even death in AL patients. Hence, AL patients are often clinically treated using normal platelet transfusion. However, studies have found that platelets can also affect AL cells. This review discusses the changes occurring in platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, reticulated platelets, platelet membrane glycoprotein, platelet aggregation, and activation in AL patients, the causes of these changes, and the possible significance of these changes for patient prognosis. Abstract Background A previous study showed that the lungs are involved in the biogenesis of platelets (PLTs). Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the association between bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease, and PLT parameters in very premature infants. Methods The study subjects were premature infants with a gestational age of ≤ 30 weeks and birth weight of ≤ 1500 g in a preterm birth cohort study recruited between January 1, 2015, and August 31, 2019. BPD was defined as the need for oxygen supplementation more than 28 days after birth. The PLT count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and plateletcrit (PCT) level were compared between BPD and non-BPD infants. A generalized estimating equation model was used to adjust for confounding factors. A forward stepwise logistic regression model was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for thrombocytopenia in the BPD group. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to assess the predictive value of PLT count combined with gestational age (GA) and birth weight (BW) for BPD. Results The final study subjects were 134 very premature infants, namely, 64 infants with BPD and 70 infants without BPD. The BPD infants had lower PLT counts (F = 4.44, P = 0.03) and PCT levels (F = 12.54, P = 0.00) than the non-BPD infants. However, the MPV (F = 14.25, P = 0.00) and PDW (F = 15.04, P = 0.00) were higher in the BPD group. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the BPD infants had a higher risk of thrombocytopenia than the non-BPD infants (adjusted aOR 2.88, 95% CI 1.01–8.15), and the risk of BPD was increased in very premature infants with a PLT count ≤ 177*109/L (OR 4.74, 95% CI 1.93–11.62) at the end of the second week. In the multivariate predictive model, it was showed that the AUC area (0.85), sensitivity (0.88), specificity (0.70) and Youden index (0.58) are improved using PLT counts ≤ 177*109/L combined with GA and BW. Conclusions Abnormal PLT parameters were observed in BPD infants, and a PLT count ≤ 177*109/L was a potential risk factor for the development of BPD in very premature infants.

Patients with severe depression showed an increased mean platelet volume (MPV) (P < 0.05). In the patients with depression, MPV was positively correlated (P < 0.05) with HAMD scores for work and interest, gastrointestinal symptoms, hopelessness, the anxiety/somatization factor, and the hopelessness factor. Platelet count (PLT) was negatively correlated (P < 0.05) with HAMD scores for hypochondriasis, and plateletcrit (PCT) was negatively correlated (P < 0.05) with HAMD scores for middle insomnia and hypochondriasis. Platelet distribution width (PDW) was positively correlated (P < 0.05) with HAMD scores for gastrointestinal and systemic symptoms as well as hopelessness. Higher CRP levels (P < 0.05) were found in the patients with depression than in the healthy control subjects. Furthermore, in the patients with depression, CRP levels were positively correlated (P < 0.05) with HAMD scores for guilt and the cognitive impairment factor.Conclusion: Classical platelet parameters (PLT, MPV, PCT, PDW) and CRP were shown to be associated with specific depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment factors, including sleep, gastrointestinal symptoms, hypochondriasis, losing interest in work, and despair. Background and Design: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the apocrine glands. The mean platelet volume (MPV) is a risk factor for many inflammatory diseases and can be used as a marker of inflammatory response. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the expression of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) along with platelet parameters and coagulation indices in chronic mountain sickness (CMS) patients and healthy individuals on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The levels of PDGF and TXA2were examined in 22 CMS patients (age, 52.77 ± 9.92 years, haemoglobin, 219 ± 13 g/l) and 25 healthy individuals (age, 47.80 ± 9.78 years, haemoglobin, 146 ± 18 g/l), and the association between platelet parameters and coagulation indices was investigated. Mean platelet volume and fibrinogen degradation product were higher in the CMS compared to the control group (10.58 ± 0.83 vs. 8.92 ± 1.61, 7.50 ± 2.15 vs. 4.40 ± 2.51), platelet count and plateletcrit were lower in the CMS compared to the control group (0.13 (0.80, 0.16) vs. 0.23 (0.18, 0.24), 109 ± 46 vs. 204 ± 86). The levels of PDGFand TXA2 in the bone marrow and peripheral blood ofCMSpatients were higher (P < 0.01) in comparison to the control group. The two factors had no statistically significant relationship with platelet parameters or coagulation indices (P > 0.159). According to the current findings, platelets in CMS patients were activated, resulting in aberrant coagulation and PDGF and TXA2 expression, which could be due to physiological adjustments to the plateau's high altitude. To summarize, PDGF and TXA2 levels in CMS patients were not correlated with coagulation or platelet parameters, implying that the mechanism behind their increased expression warrants additional investigation. INTRODUCTION: Bone Marrow (BM) examination is the gold-standard test in discriminating between hyperdestructive thrombocytopenia and hypoproductive thrombocytopenia. However, BM examination is an invasive, time-consuming, and expensive approach. Therefore, BM study is not recommended as the first-line method. Recent studies showed that platelet parameters such as mean platelet volume (MPV), plateletcrit (PCT), platelet size deviation width (PDW) could be used for differential diagnosis of thrombocytopenia. In the present study, accordingly, we aimed to investigate the significance of these parameters in the differential diagnosis of thrombocytopenia. METHODS: One hundred sixty-four (164) patients with thrombocytopenia were included in the present study. The patients were divided into two groups according to the time of the diagnosis of thrombocytopenia: hyperdestructive (75 ITP) and hypoproductive (25 AA, 25 MDS, 24 AML, 15 ALL). The diagnosis was made based on hematological, pathological, and chromosomal analyses and guidelines. Samples for complete blood counts were collected in K3EDTA tubes and analyzed with an automated hematology analyzer, Beckman-Coulter. RESULTS: The platelet count was similar in both groups. The present results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of age, gender and PDW. However, MPV was significantly higher in the hyperdestructive group than the hypoproductive group. By contrast, PCT was considerably lower in the hyperdestructive group than the hypoproductive group. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The results of the present study indicated that these platelet parameters might provide additional contributions to strengthen the diagnosis in patients diagnosed with ITP and would be beneficial to consider the thrombocyte parameters as well as the clinical and other laboratory tests of the patient.

To explore the potential clinical value of platelet parameters in early pregnancy in predicting gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). A total of 1188 singleton pregnant women were included in the regular antenatal examination and delivered in the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University from January 2016 to December 2018, who had no pre-pregnancy diabetes, no factors leading to elevated blood glucose level, no medical complications and no other obstetrical complications. Blood routine examination was performed at the 11–13+6 gestational weeks. All pregnant women underwent 75 g OGTT directly at the 24–28th gestational weeks. And they were divided into GDM group (n = 192) and non-GDM group (n = 996). Binomial Logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used to evaluate the ability of first-trimester platelet parameters to predict GDM, that is the sensitivity and specificity of platelet parameters at the optimal critical value. There were significant differences in platelet count (PLT), platelet distribution width (PDW), mean platelet volume (MPV), and plateletcrit (PCT) between the GDM group and the normal group (p＜.05). After adjusting for the related factors such as maternal age, parity and pregestational body mass index (BMI), the MPV and PCT were correlated with the incidence of GDM (p＜.05). The area under the curve (AUC) of MPV was 0.577; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.533–0.621 and that of PCT was 0.628. 95%CI 0.582–0.674. PLT and PDW were not correlated with GDM. Background: A previous study showed that the lungs are involved in the biogenesis of platelets (PLTs). Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the association between bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease, and PLT parameters in very premature infants.Methods: The study subjects were premature infants with a gestational age of ≤ 30 weeks and birth weight of ≤ 1500 g in a preterm birth cohort study recruited between January 1, 2015, and August 31, 2019. BPD was defined as the need for oxygen supplementation more than 28 days after birth. The PLT count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and plateletcrit (PCT) level were compared between BPD and non-BPD infants. A generalized estimating equation model was used to adjust for confounding factors. A forward stepwise logistic regression model was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for thrombocytopenia in the BPD group. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to assess the predictive value of PLT count combined with gestational age (GA) and birth weight (BW) for BPD.Results: The final study subjects were 134 very premature infants, namely, 64 infants with BPD and 70 infants without BPD. The BPD infants had lower PLT counts (F = 4.44, P = 0.03) and PCT levels (F = 12.54, P = 0.00) than the non-BPD infants. However, the MPV (F = 14.25, P = 0.00) and PDW (F = 15.04, P = 0.00) were higher in the BPD group. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the BPD infants had a higher risk of thrombocytopenia than the non-BPD infants (adjusted aOR 2.88, 95% CI 1.01-8.15), and the risk of BPD was increased in very premature infants with a PLT count ≤ 177*109/L (OR 4.74, 95% CI 1.93-11.62) at the end of the second week. In the multivariate predictive model, it was showed that the AUC area (0.85), sensitivity (0.88), specificity (0.70) and Youden index (0.58) are improved using PLT counts ≤ 177*109/L combined with GA and BW.Conclusions: Abnormal PLT parameters were observed in BPD infants, and a PLT count ≤ 177*109/L was a potential risk factor for the development of BPD in very premature infants. Objective: Chronic gastritis is one of the most common diseases in the World. It is estimated that more than half of the World's population will have chronic gastritis at any time in life. H pylori are the most common cause of chronic gastritis. In the previous studies, WBC, neutrophil, lymphocyte, PLT, and mean platelet volume (MPV) values and their ratios are used as inflammatory indicators. Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is among the most critical indicators. This study aimed to show whether there is a relationship between H pylori positivity and severity and these parameters in patients who underwent Upper Gastrointestinal system endoscopy. Method: The files of 1689 patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were scanned for this study. According to laboratory results and pathology reports, the patients were divided into H pylori positivity and non-H pylori positivity. The hemogram results of the patients in both groups were examined, and neutrophil, lymphocyte, thrombocyte values were recorded. NLR and PLR were calculated. Results: 722 (42.7%) of the patients were male, and 967 (57.3%) were female. While H pylori were positive in 838 (49.6%) patients, 851 (50.4%) patients did not have H pylori positivity. Among H pylori-positive patients, 407 patients (48%) had mild, 280 (33%) moderate H pylori positivity, and 151 patients (19%) had severe H pylori positivity. When the patients were divided into mild, moderate, and severe groups according to H pylori positivity, NLR and PLR were statistically significantly lower as H pylori severity increased. On the other hand, when both groups were compared according to H pylori positivity, no statistically significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of age, albumin, AST, ALT, WBC, Neutrophil, PLT, NLR, PLR values. Conclusions: Our study found that NLR and PLR values were statistically significantly lower as H pylori severity increased. Therefore, when we evaluate our results in light of the literature, we assume that it is more appropriate to use PLR and NLR values together rather than separately as inflammatory markers regarding H pylori severity. The disease is highly associated with micro-vascular and macro-vascular complications. Thus, the main aim of this study was to compare basic coagulation profiles and platelet parameters among type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and healthy controls.Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted at Dessie Referral Hospital from February to April 2019. A total of 180 study participants consisting of (60 T1DM, 60 T2DM, and 60 healthy controls) were enrolled using a systematic random sampling technique. Basic coagulation profiles and platelet parameters were determined using the HUMACLOT JUNIOR coagulometer and DIRUI BF 6500 automated hematology analyzer respectively. Non-parametric Kruskal–Wallis test supplemented with Dunn-Bonferroni correction and Spearman rank-order correlation test were used to compare basic coagulation profiles and platelet parameters among the groups. The test result was expressed in median and interquartile range and presented in texts and tables. P-value < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant.Results: Prothrombin time (PT) and international normalization ratio (INR) were significantly reduced in T2DM as compared to T1DM and healthy controls (p < 0.05). Platelet distribution width (PDW) and mean platelet volume (MPV) were significantly increased in both T1DM and T2DM as compared to healthy controls (p < 0.05). Moreover, PT and INR were negatively correlated with fasting blood glucose (FBG) among T1DM and PT, INR and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) were negatively correlated with FBG among T2DM.Conclusion: Basic coagulation profiles and platelet parameters were significantly different between diabetes and controls where PT and INR in T2DM were significantly reduced as compared to T1DM and controls. However, PDW and MPV were significantly elevated in both T1DM and T2DM as compared to controls. Moreover, FBG was significantly negatively correlated with PT and INR among T1DM and FBG was significantly negatively correlated with PT, INR, and APTT among T2DM. Therefore, T2DM may be related to increased risk of thrombosis indicated by reduced PT and INR and high PDW and MPV than T1DM and controls. Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the most common and potentially treatable health problems. The platelet behavior is often unpredictable and complicated in IDA. The present study was aimed to evaluate significance of platelet parameters in IDA, effect of iron therapy on them, and complications related to platelet parameters in such cases. Patients and Methods: It was a prospective observational study. A total of 85 outdoor and indoor consecutive patients of pure IDA with low ferritin levels were enrolled as cases. Platelet parameters – mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and plateletcrit (Pct) obtained by automated blood cell counter were studied at the time of presentation and after 1 month of oral iron therapy. Results: IDA was diagnosed more in females (65, 76.5%). All the basic hematological parameters were significantly altered in cases (P < 0.005) except WBC and Pct. Red blood cell parameters have a linear relationship with MPV and inverse with platelet count and PDW. 35 out of 85 IDA cases (41%) showed reactive thrombocytosis (RT). Mild RT was significantly associated with mild anemia (8.1–10 gm%; n = 11) as compared to moderate RT. Six thromboembolic complications were encountered which presented mostly with mild RT, less MPV, high PDW and Pct linearly increasing with platelet count. On follow-up, cases with RT after 1 month of oral iron therapy, platelets showed significant reduction (P = 0.00015) and rise in Hb levels (P = 0.025). Conclusions: RT is common finding in IDA. Thromboembolic central nervous system complications should always be kept in mind because they may deteriorate the clinical picture in otherwise benign course of IDA.

We aimed to evaluate the association between mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width (PDW), platelet count (PC) and plateletcrit (PCT), and the presence of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and treatment response. In the literature, there is no study that investigates the platelet functions in diabetic patients with SSNHL.

Introduction: Health professions are heavily engaged facing the current threat of SARS‐CoV‐2 (COVID‐19). Although there are many diagnostic tools, an accurate and rapid laboratory procedure for diagnosing COVID‐19 is recommended. We focused on platelet parameters as the additional biomarkers for clinical diagnosis in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED). Materials and Methods: Five hundred and sixty‐one patients from February to April 2020 have been recruited. Patients were divided into three groups: (N = 50) COVID‐19 positive and (N = 21) COVID‐19 negative with molecular testing, (N = 490) as reference population without molecular testing. A Multiplex rRT‐PCR from samples collected by nasopharyngeal swabs was performed and the hematological data collected. Results: We detected a mild anemia in COVID‐19 group and lymphopenia against reference population: hemoglobin (g/dL) 13.0 (11.5‐14.8) versus 13.9 (12.8‐15.0) (P =.0135); lymphocytes (109/L) 1.24 (0.94‐1.73) versus 1.99 (1.49‐2.64) (P <.0001). In addition, abnormal platelet parameters as follows (COVID group vs reference population): PLT (×109/L) 209 (160‐258) vs 236 (193‐279) (P =.0239). IPF (%) 4.05 (2.5‐5.9) versus 3.4 (2.2‐4.9) (P =.0576); H‐IPF (%) 1.25 (0.8‐2.2) versus 0.95 (0.6‐1.5) (P =.0171) were identified. In particular, COVID positive group had a high H‐IPF/IPF Ratio compared to reference population [0.32 (0.29‐0.36) versus 0.29 (0.26‐0.32), respectively, (P =.0003)]. Finally, a PLT difference of nearly 50 × 109/L between pre/postCOVID‐19 sampling for each patient was found (N = 42) (P =.0194). Conclusions: COVID‐19 group results highlighted higher IPF and H‐IPF values, with increased H‐IPF/IPF Ratio, associated to PLT count reduction. Objective: Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is a potentially lifethreatening medical condition that results in bowel infarction and gangrene. It usually occurs over the age of 60 and is seen in both sexes at similar rates. Early diagnosis and treatment are the cornerstones in the treatment of AMI. Although different biochemical markers for AMI are used clinically, no specific laboratory test has been proven to identify the presence of ischemic or necrotic bowel. In this study, we aimed to evaluate Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLT/LYM), NLR/PLT, mean platelet volume-PLT ratio (MPV)/PLT, and MPV*NLR/PLT could be a useful tool for early prediction of the severity of AMI. Method: We analyzed retrospectively records of 105 patients diagnosed with acute AMI who were operated on at our clinic. We investigated patient demographics, clinical symptoms, concomitant diseases, blood test results, and data regarding the surgical procedure performed and the resection's width. The patients were divided into two groups as short bowel syndrome (SBS) developing and non-developing. Results: We enrolled a total of 105 AMI patients in this study. There was no significant difference between the rates of non-SBS and SBS in terms of age, gender, diabetes mellitus, and smoking status. WBC, NEU, LYM, and MPV were higher, and PLT was lower in the SBS group. There were no statistically significant differences in MPV/PLT between the two groups. The combined values of NLR, PLT, and MPV were also compared between non-SBS and SBS groups. According to our results, the means of NLR, PLT/LYM, NLR/PLT, MPV/NLR, and MPV*NLR/PLT variables were statistically significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions: Our findings showed that NLR, NLR/PLT, MPV/PLT, MPV*NLR, and MPV*NLR/PLT could be a relatively better tool for early prediction of the severity of AMI and SBS. Abstract Background No consensus has been reached on capillary blood reference intervals for platelet parameters in full-term neonates. We aimed to establish neonatal capillary blood reference intervals for platelet parameters and evaluate influences of sex, gestational age and postnatal age on platelet parameters. Methods This study was a prospective investigation and implemented in 594 healthy full-term neonates from 12 to 84 h of age, using SYSMEX XN-9000 haematology automatic analyser by means of capillary blood. Reference intervals for platelet parameters were defined by an interval of 2.5th − 97.5th percentiles. Results Capillary reference interval for platelet count was (152–464) × 109/L. No significance was found between sex-divided reference intervals for platelet parameters. The values of platelet count changed minimally across gestational age (37–41 weeks) and postnatal age (12–84 h). Reference intervals for other platelet parameters were affected by these factors to a different extent. Conclusions We established capillary blood reference intervals for platelet parameters in the first days after birth of full-term neonates in China.

Background: Pre-eclampsia (PET) is a potentially devastating multi-systemic disorder resulting in the generation of oxidative stress. Platelet activation causes vasoconstriction and release of inflammatory cytokines, resulting in an intensified inflammatory response, endothelial damage, and coagulopathy which culminate in adverse pregnancy outcomes. Aim: To compare the platelet parameters between preeclamptic and normotensive pregnant women and their relationship to adverse outcomes in women with pre-eclampsia. Materials and methods: This was a case-control study of platelet indices of 60 pre-eclamptic and 60 normotensive pregnant women recruited at 28 weeks and followed till delivery. Objective: Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication that jeopardizes the health of both the mother and the fetus. Platelet parameters are closely linked to the severity of preeclampsia. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic potential of platelet parameters in the early second trimester for the detection of preeclampsia., Methods: A total of 840 participants from the Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical College were included in the study, consisting of 327 healthy pregnant women, 209 with mild preeclampsia, and 304 with severe preeclampsia. General clinical data and platelet parameters for these three groups of pregnant women were collected, and differences among them were compared. In addition, univariate analysis and logistic regression were used to identify preeclampsia risk factors, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was conducted to assess the predictive value of platelet parameters., Results: Platelet count was not found to significantly differ between the healthy and preeclampsia groups. However, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width (PDW), and platelet-large cell ratios (P-LCR) were observed to be significantly higher in the preeclampsia group than the healthy group. Background: Currently, there are few studies on the correlation between platelet counts (PLT), plateletcrit (PCT), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) with and without pleural effusion. This study is to investigate their likely correlation and to evaluate the potential diagnostic or prognostic applications of these platelet parameters. Methods: A total of 218 each of patients with primary SCLC and healthy controls were included. Hematological indicators and other clinically relevant information were collected. Comparisons of the differences between groups were applied to the independent samples t-test or the chi-squared test. ROC curve analysis was used to access the diagnostic performance of PLT, PCT, and PLR. Results: Compared with healthy controls, PLT, PCT, and PLR in SCLC were significantly higher. On the other hand, mean platelet volume, lymphocytes, and hemoglobin were significantly lower. The levels of PLT, PCT, and PLR were related to malignant pleural effusion, while not related to lymph node or distant metastasis. The incidence of pleural effusion in patients with SCLC was positively correlated with the levels of PLT, PCT, and PLR. ROC curve analysis showed that PLT, PCT, and PLR were valuable markers for SCLC, and the combination of the three has higher diagnostic efficacy. Different qualitative and quantitative changes in platelets are involved in the pathophysiological processes in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD): ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). The aim of the study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of Platelet mass Index (PMI) and other platelet parameters in assessment disease activity in patients with UC and CD. A cross-sectional, observational study consisted of 60 IBD patients (30 UC and 30 CD) and 30 healthy subjects (Control group). Patients were grouped according to disease activity into active and inactive (remission). Platelet count (PLC), Plateletcrit (PCT), Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) and PMI were determined for all study participants. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and their corresponding areas under the curve (AUC) were used to determine diagnostic accuracy. Although PLC had the highest AUC (0.756) compared to PCT (AUC: 0.731), PDW (AUC: 0.722) and PMI (AUC: 0.724), they all had fair diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing active and inactive UC patients. Discriminatory accuracy of PLC was excellent (AUC: 0.909), PCT and PMI good to excellent (AUC: 0.809 and AUC: 0.893, respectively) and PDW fair (AUC: 0.789) in classifying CD patients as active and inactive. Platelet parameters are simple, routinely available biomarkers more useful for assessing disease activity for patients with CD than for patients with UC. Our results indicate, for the first time, that PMI may serve as a novel and simple marker in identifying whether IBD patients are in the active or inactive phase of the disease. Mild RT was significantly associated with mild anemia (8.1–10 gm%; n = 11) as compared to moderate RT. Six thromboembolic complications were encountered which presented mostly with mild RT, less MPV, high PDW and Pct linearly increasing with platelet count. On follow-up, cases with RT after 1 month of oral iron therapy, platelets showed significant reduction (P = 0.00015) and rise in Hb levels (P = 0.025). Conclusions: RT is common finding in IDA. Thromboembolic central nervous system complications should always be kept in mind because they may deteriorate the clinical picture in otherwise benign course of IDA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The extraordinary advances in clinical hematology, biology, and oncology in the last decades would not have been possible without discovering how to identify and count the cells circulating in the blood. For centuries, scientists have used slides, counting chambers (hemocytometers), and diluting and staining solutions for this task. Then, automated hemocytometry began. This science, now linked to the daily routine of laboratory hematology, has completed an overwhelming path over a few decades. Our laboratories today operate with versatile multiparameter systems, ranging from complex single- channel instruments to bulky continuous flow machines. In terms of clinical information obtained from a simple routine blood test, the full exploitation of their potential depends on the operators' imagination and courage. A comprehensive review of the scientific publications that have accompanied the development of hemocytometry from the 1950s to today would require entire volumes. More than seven hundred contributions that authors worldwide have published in Clinical and Laboratory Haematology until 2007 and then the International Journal of Laboratory Hematology are summarized. Such journals have represented and hopefully will continue to represent the privileged place of welcome for future scientific research in hemocytometry. Improved technologies, attention to quality, new reagents and electronics, information technology, and scientist talent ensure a more profound and deeper knowledge of cell properties: current laboratory devices measure and count even minor immature or pathological cell subpopulations. Objectives: Bone Marrow (BM) examination is the gold-standard test in discriminating between hyperdestructive thrombocytopenia and hypoproductive thrombocytopenia. However, BM examination is an invasive, time-consuming, and expensive approach. Therefore, BM study is not recommended as the first-line method. Recent studies showed that platelet parameters such as mean platelet volume (MPV), plateletcrit (PCT), platelet size deviation width (PDW) could be used for differential diagnosis of thrombocytopenia. In the present study, accordingly, we aimed to investigate the significance of these parameters in the differential diagnosis of thrombocytopenia. Materials and Methods: One hundred sixty-four (164) patients with thrombocytopenia were included in the present study. The patients were divided into two groups according to the time of the diagnosis of thrombocytopenia: hyperdestructive (75 ITP) and hypoproductive (25 AA, 25 MDS, 24 AML, 15 ALL). The diagnosis was made based on hematological, pathological, and chromosomal analyses and guidelines. Samples for complete blood counts were collected in K3EDTA tubes and analyzed with an automated hematology analyzer, Beckman-Coulter. Results: The platelet count was similar in both groups. The present results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of age, gender and PDW. However, MPV was significantly higher in the hyperdestructive group than the hypoproductive group. By contrast, PCT was considerably lower in the hyperdestructive group than the hypoproductive group. Conclusion: The results of the present study indicated that these platelet parameters might provide additional contributions to strengthen the diagnosis in patients diagnosed with ITP and would be beneficial to consider the thrombocyte parameters as well as the clinical and other laboratory tests of the patient. Objective: To study the relationship between platelet parameters, blood lipids, complement C3, C4 levels and disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods: from January 2011 2 018 1 Nian our hospital admitted 100 cases of SLE patients included in the study, which will be different according to SEL disease activity index (SLEDAI) score into active group (SLEDAI score ≥10 points) in 36 cases, There were 64 cases in the inactive group (SLEDAI score<10 points), and 100 healthy volunteers who underwent physical examination in our hospital during the same period were selected as the control group. The three groups of platelet parameters, blood lipid indicators and complement C3, C4 levels were compared, and Pearson correlation was used to analyze the correlation between SLEDAI scores and various indicators in SLE patients. Results: The platelet count (PLT), platelet volume and the percentage of large platelets in the active group and the inactive group were lower than those in the control group, and the percentage of PLT and large platelets in the active group was lower than that of the inactive group (P<0.05). The mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet volume distribution width (PDW) of the active group and the inactive group were higher than those of the control group, and the active group was higher than the inactive group (P<0.05). The low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) of the active group and the inactive group were higher than the control group, the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was lower than the control group (P<0.05), and the HDL-C of the active group was lower than that of the control group. Inactive group (P<0.05). The levels of complement C3 and C4 in the active group and the inactive group were lower than those in the control group, and the levels of complement C3 and C4 in the active group were lower than those in the inactive group (P<0.05). Pearson correlation analysis showed that SLEDAI score of SLE patients was negatively correlated with PLT, the percentage of large platelets, HDL-C, and complement C3 and C4 levels, and positively correlated with MPV and PDW (P<0.05). Conclusion: Platelet parameters PLT, large platelet percentage, blood lipid index HDL-C and complement C3, C4 levels in SLE patients are closely related to the SLEDAI score, and may be used as indicators of disease activity in SLE patients.
