Despite the predation on picoplankton by diverse protist groups in marine ecosystems, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) have mainly been used to estimate the predation effect of protists on heterotrophic bacteria. A preliminary investigation was conducted to estimate the predation potential of protist communities including HNF, heterotrophic dinoflagellates, and ciliates on picoplankton in natural assemblages of the Yellow Sea (YS) during summer. A higher density of picoplankton was observed in nearshore waters (station 35-03) than in off-shore waters (stations 35-11 and 35-13). Among the protists, naked ciliates were also distributed in high abundance near the shore. Specifically, small ciliate cells (20–50 µm) were dominant there. HNF showed a different distribution, with higher abundance in off-shore water than in nearshore water. Although predation and ingestion rates of protists on the picoplankton were relatively higher in the nearshore, its predation pressure was on the average of approximately 33% d−1 without a considerable change, despite the different water sampling depths and locations along 35° N. The lower variation in predation pressure by protist predators may have been caused by complementary predation effects between small ciliates and HNF. There is no doubt that seagrass beds constitute one of the most productive ecosystems in shallow coastal waters. Despite this, picoplankton in seagrass ecosystems has received relatively little attention. The purpose of this study was to compare picoplankton growth and mortality rates between seagrass and unvegetated habitats using chamber incubations. We tested two main hypotheses: (i) incubation with seagrass would result in higher bacterial growth rates due to increased DOM release from seagrass photosynthesis, and (ii) Synechococcus spp. would be lower in the presence of seagrass due to competition for inorganic nutrients. Bacterial growth rates were higher in seagrass chambers (2.44 d–1) than in non-seagrass chambers (2.31 d−1), respectively, suggesting that organic carbon coming from the seagrass community may support bacterial production. Furthermore, the growth rate of Synechococcus spp. was significantly lower in the seagrass treatment than in the non-seagrass treatment, likely reflecting nutrient competition with the seagrass. Small-scale chambers proved to be a useful tool for studying the factors controlling spatial and temporal patterns of picoplankton across different habitats. In the present study, Synechococcus spp. pico-, nano- and microplankton community compositions in the Arctic and Antarctic surface coastal waters were compared during the summer of 2019 using flow cytometry. The average surface water temperatures in Antarctica and the Arctic were −0.29 ± 0.28°C and 3.71 ± 0.71°C, respectively. While plankton abundance in Antarctica exhibited a relative increase with temperature, plankton abundance in the Arctic exhibited a relative decrease with temperature. However, no significant correlation was found between plankton abundance and temperature. Synechococcus spp. cell abundance dominated in both polar regions, followed by picoeukaryotes, microautotrophs and nanoeukaryotes. Overall, plankton abundance across sampling sites was highly variable. In Antarctica, the abundance of Synechococcus spp., picoeukaryotes, nanoeukaryotes and microautotrophs were the highest in S4 (151,400 cells/ml), S1 (2180 cells/ml), S2 (1080 cells/ml) and S4 (6100 cells/ml), respectively. On the other hand, the most abundant stations in the Arctic in terms of Synechococcus spp., picoeukaryotes, nanoeukaryotes and microautotrophs were N2 (19600 cells/ml), N3 (6400 cells/ml), N3 (500 cells/ml) and N4 (6100 cells/ml), respectively. The mechanism that determines the dynamics of subsurface chlorophyll maximum depth (zSCM) has long been debated. Although a coupling between zSCM and the top of nitracline (znit) has been widely observed in the open ocean, a co‐location of zSCM and an isolume depth (ziso) has often been reported in oligotrophic waters. In this study, based on continuous observations of ten BGC‐Argo floats, we found that the seasonal displacement of zSCM in all subtropical gyres was driven mainly by light, but zSCM displayed a nutrient‐driven pattern occasionally when znit became shallower than ziso. We therefore proposed a "two‐group competition framework": zSCM in subtropical gyres is determined by the competition of two phytoplankton groups, nutrient‐sensitive picoeukaryotes and light‐sensitive Prochlorococcus. When znit (ziso) is shallower than ziso (znit), picoeukaryotes (Prochlorococcus) dominate the chlorophyll biomass at the SCM, and thus zSCM follows znit (ziso). We took advantage of the continuous observations from autonomous profiling floats of the chlorophyll maximum depth in oligotrophic subtropical oceans. Our analysis of those data showed that the depth of the chlorophyll maximum depth in these areas usually followed either the depth where there was enough light for phytoplankton to grow or the depth where there were enough nutrients for them to grow. This discovery suggests that two different groups of phytoplankton determine where the chlorophyll maximum appears. One group is sensitive to nutrient supply and responds more quickly to variations of nutrient supply than of light, and the other group is sensitive to light availability and responds more quickly to variations of light than of nutrient supply. The depth of the chlorophyll maximum is determined by the interaction between light and nutrient availability, which determines which group dominates. In the last decade, there have been several research articles on the methane paradox (aerobic CH4 production) first described in the 1960s. In this study, we present observations of CH4 supersaturation in the surface layer in the central Chile upwelling zone (36° S, 73° W) throughout two seasonal cycles (2018–2021). Additionally, CH4 cycling experiments were performed using plankton fractions (natural planktonic community, <150, <3 and <0.2 µm) in a seasonal phytoplankton succession. Our findings highlight the significant role of picoplankton (<3 μm) in CH4 production on the ocean surface, contrasting with the limited involvement of larger organisms (<150 μm). Incubations with methylated substrates such as methylphosphonic acid (MPn) and trimethylamine (TMA) stimulated CH4 production in the picoplankton fraction during both upwelling (austral spring-summer) and non-upwelling (winter) seasons, being particularly relevant in the later period when Synechococcus contributed with high relative abundance. Long-term microcosm experiments underscore the importance of heterotrophic bacteria and cyanobacteria in methylotrophic methanogenesis, enhancing CH4 regeneration, mediated by dissolved organic matter (DOM) recycling. In conclusion, picoplankton emerges as a key factor in both production and metabolization of methylated substrates, being responsible for maintaining CH4 supersaturation. Larvaceans are among the most widespread gelatinous organisms of the zooplankton and have extraordinary growth rates, on the same time scale as that of their protozoan prey. Climate change is expected to favour picoplankton and the microbial loop. Larvaceans can directly feed on the smallest plankton, leading to a competitive advantage. This 'larvacean shunt' could counteract elongated food chains that are projected for our future ocean. Larvaceans produce marine snow that might sustain carbon export in a future ocean where primary producers are smaller. Larvaceans are food for many fish and invertebrate species, indicating their importance in trophic transfer. They may be especially important to mesopelagic fish, indirectly increasing carbon sequestration due to these fishes' production of faecal pellets at depth. Larvaceans are important for repackaging particles, thereby accelerating carbon export and sequestration. Larvaceans are gelatinous zooplankton abundant throughout the ocean. Larvaceans have been overlooked in research because they are difficult to collect and are perceived as being unimportant in biogeochemical cycles and food-webs. We synthesise evidence that their unique biology enables larvaceans to transfer more carbon to higher trophic levels and deeper into the ocean than is commonly appreciated. Larvaceans could become even more important in the Anthropocene because they eat small phytoplankton that are predicted to become more prevalent under climate change, thus moderating projected future declines in ocean productivity and fisheries. We identify critical knowledge gaps and argue that larvaceans should be incorporated into ecosystem assessments and biogeochemical models to improve predictions of the future ocean. Single-cell cyanobacteria, being an integral part of picoplankton in marine ecosystems, have been suggested to be important contributors to primary production and carbon cycles in the global ocean. The spatial distribution, abundance and diversity of natural communities of picocyanobacteria (PC) in estuaries of Khatanga, Indigirka and Kolyma rivers and adjacent shelves of the Laptev and East Siberian seas were studied in September 2017. The PC concentrations were higher in the estuaries than in the shelf stations of the seas. The abundance of PC was 1.25 × 106 cells/L, 0.42 × 106 cells/L and 1.58 × 106 cells/L in the surface layer of Khatanga, Indigirka and Kolyma estuaries, respectively. The contribution of PC to total autumn picophytoplankton abundance averaged 6% and 3% in the Khatanga and Indigirka estuaries and reached 5% in the Kolyma estuary. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene and ITS region clone libraries revealed picocyanobacterial sequences related to marine Synechococcus subclusters 5.1-I, 5.2 and 5.3. Of the phylotypes from Synechococcus S5.1-I and S5.2 that were found, only several were discovered earlier, while the remaining clones were unique. Two groups of phylotypes (clades A and E) were found that were not closely similar to those previously described in both marine and freshwater habitats. It can be expected that a more detailed study of the phytoplankton of the Arctic seas will further expand our understanding of the diversity of these key components of the food chains of oceanic biocenoses. Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophs are a newly discovered member of the bacterial community in the Adriatic Sea. During the last seven years, when we started to study these organisms, we have collected a considerable number of samples from different environments, from the coast, the estuary, and the open sea. Here we have compiled data from 34 georeferenced study sites from four studies that summarize all that is known about aerobic anoxygenic phototrophs and examine the spatial and vertical distribution and environmental factors affecting this community in the Adriatic Sea. We found horizontal and vertical influences on AAP distribution, mainly salinity, nitrates, chlorophyll a, ammonium, temperature, and soluble reactive phosphorus. Much is known about their ecology in the Adriatic, and with a new survey underway, we will expand our knowledge of their community composition and their role in carbon flux to higher trophic levels. Biological organic carbon production and consumption play a fundamental role in the understanding of organic carbon cycling in oceans. However, studies on them in the Kuroshio, the western boundary current in the North Pacific Ocean, are scarce. To better understand the variations of plankton community respiration (CR) and particulate organic carbon (POC), eight cruises. which covered four seasons over a 2-year period, were surveyed across the Kuroshio at the KTV1 transect east of Taiwan. Spatially, a coastal uplift of isotherms (i.e., onshore lifting and offshore deepening) was observed along the KTV1 transect. During the uplift, the cold and nutrient-rich deep waters shoal to shallow water and enhance phytoplankton growth, resulting in higher values of phytoplankton, POC, and plankton CR on the onshore side. In this study, phytoplankton was dominated by picophytoplankton including Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus, and picoeukaryotes. Plankton CR was low, and its mean depth-normalized integrated rate (the upper 100 m water depth) ranged from 7.07 to 22.27 mg C m−3 d−1, to which the picophytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria contributed the most. The mean depth-normalized integrated value of POC ranged from 12.7 to 21.6 μg C L−1. POC is mainly associated with phytoplankton biomass with a mean carbon ratio of chlorophyll a/POC ≈ 1.03. Silicon (Si) utilization is not limited to eukaryotes. Recent research has suggested that the pattern of a large contribution of picocyanobacteria to biogenic silica (bSi) stocks might be widespread in the oligotrophic open ocean. We are the first to measure the size-fractionated bSi standing stocks and production rates in the oligotrophic South China Sea (SCS), which has obvious characteristics of oligotrophic waters. The 150 m integrated bSi standing stocks in the pico-sized fractions averaged 23 % of the total; the contribution of picoplankton to the total bSi production rate was 44 %. Interestingly, our estimated contributions of Synechococcus alone to the <2 μm bSi standing stock and < 2 μm bSi production rates averaged 14 % and 66 %, respectively, indicating that the significant and persistent contribution of bSi was strongly associated with marine picocyanobacteria. Furthermore, the dynamic changes in nutrient concentrations, especially in DIN and DIP, also potentially affected the variability in picoplankton bSi stocks and production rates, while the effects of temperature and salinity were not obvious. In this study, we have provided new information on measurable bSi in the picoplankton size fraction and its production rate in the SCS. We have demonstrated that picoplankton contributes a measurable, and at times significant, proportion to both the total bSi standing stock and its production rate in the SCS. The abundance, biomass, chlorophyll "a" concentration of picophytoplankton, contribution of picoalgae to total chlorophyll "a" and species composition of phototrophic picoeukaryotes (cells size less than 3 µm) were studied during 83 cruise of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh in the Kara Sea in June 2021. The picophytoplankton abundance varied from 0.25 to 4.91 × 109 cell/m3, biomass–from 0.34 to 2.49 mg С/m3. The minimum abundance and biomass were found in the areas adjacent to the ice edge. The contribution of picophytoplankton to total chlorophyll a concentration in photic layer varied from 3 to 28% with maximum found in the stations free of ice more than 5 days. Picophytoplankton was represented by picoeukaryotes and cyanobacteria. The cyanobacteria contribution was low and varied from 0.2 to 1.8%. The Illumina sequencing of V4 region of 18S rRNA gene revealed that in the surface layer Chaetoceros socialis dominated in picoeukaryotes near ice edge during the diatom bloom. In the ice-free areas for more than 5 days small flagellates, such as Micromonas polaris, Phaeocystis pouchetii and Pyramimonas diskoicola, begin to develop in the surface layer after large phytoplankton descends to the lower horizon of upper mixed layer. In this first comprehensive study of Lake Winnipeg's microbial communities, limnetic and littoral euphotic zones were examined during each season from 2016 through 2020. Classical cultivation and modern high-throughput sequencing techniques provided quantification and identification of key phototrophic populations, including aerobic anoxygenic phototrophs (AAP). Annual dynamics found total heterotrophs reached 4.23 × 106 CFU/g in littoral sands, and 7.69 × 104 CFU/mL in summer littoral waters on oligotrophic media, higher counts than for copiotrophic compositions. Limnetic numbers inversely dipped to 4.34 × 103 CFU/mL midsummer. Cultured AAP did not follow heterotrophic trends, instead peaking during the spring in both littoral and limnetic waters as 19.1 and 4.7% of total copiotrophs, or 3.9 and 4.9% of oligotrophs, decreasing till autumn each year. Complementary observations came from environmental 16S V4 rRNA gene analysis, as AAP made up 1.49 and 1.02% of the littoral and limnetic sequenced communities in the spring, declining with seasonal progression. Spatial and temporal fluctuations of microbes compared to environmental factors exposed photosynthetic populations to independently and regularly fluctuate in the ecosystem. Oxygenic phototrophic numbers expectantly matched the midsummer peak of Chl a and b, oxygenic photosynthesis related carbon fixation, and water temperature. Independently, AAP particularly colonized spring littoral areas more than limnetic, and directly corresponded to habitat conditions that specifically promoted growth: the requirement of light and organic material. Virioplankton and picoplankton are the most abundant marine biological entities on earth and mediate biogeochemical cycles in the Southern Ocean. However, understanding of their distribution and relationships with environmental factors is lacking. Here, we report on their distribution and relationships with environmental factors at 48 stations from 112.5° to 150°W and 67° to 75.5°S in the Amundsen Sea of West Antarctica. The epipelagic stations were grouped into four clusters based on the virio- and picoplankton composition and abundance. Clusters three and four, which were associated with the ice-edge blooms in the coastal and Amundsen Sea Polynya (ASP) areas, had high abundances of autotrophic picoeukaryotes; this resulted in subsequent high abundances of heterotrophic prokaryotes and viruses. Cluster two stations were in open oceanic areas, where the abundances of autotrophic and heterotrophic picoplankton were low. Cluster one stations were located between the areas of blooms and the oceanic areas, which had a low abundance of heterotrophic prokaryotes and picoeukaryotes and a high abundance of virioplankton. The abundance of viruses was significantly correlated with the abundances of autotrophic picoeukaryotes and Chl-a concentration in oceanic areas, although this reflected a time-lag with autotrophic picoeukaryote and heterotrophic prokaryotes abundances in ice-edge bloom areas. The upwelling of Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) might have induced the high abundance of autotrophic picoeukaryotes in the epipelagic zone, and the sinking particulate organic carbon (POC) might have induced the high abundance of heterotrophic prokaryotes and virioplankton in the meso- and bathypelagic zones. During a cruise from October to November 2019, along the West Antarctic Peninsula, between 64.32 and 68.37°S, we assessed the diversity and composition of the active microbial eukaryotic community within three size fractions: micro- (> 20 μm), nano- (20–5 μm), and pico-size fractions (5–0.2 μm). The communities and the environmental parameters displayed latitudinal gradients, and we observed a strong similarity in the microbial eukaryotic communities as well as the environmental parameters between the sub-surface and the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) depths. Chlorophyll concentrations were low, and the mixed layer was shallow for most of the 17 stations sampled. The richness of the microplankton was higher in Marguerite Bay (our southernmost stations), compared to more northern stations, while the diversity for the nano- and pico-plankton was relatively stable across latitude. The microplankton communities were dominated by autotrophs, mostly diatoms, while mixotrophs (phototrophs-consuming bacteria and kleptoplastidic ciliates, mostly alveolates, and cryptophytes) were the most abundant and active members of the nano- and picoplankton communities. While phototrophy was the dominant trophic mode, heterotrophy (mixotrophy, phagotrophy, and parasitism) tended to increase southward. The samples from Marguerite Bay showed a distinct community with a high diversity of nanoplankton predators, including spirotrich ciliates, and dinoflagellates, while cryptophytes were observed elsewhere. Some lineages were significantly related—either positively or negatively—to ice coverage (e.g., positive for Pelagophyceae, negative for Spirotrichea) and temperature (e.g., positive for Cryptophyceae, negative for Spirotrichea). The communities and the environmental parameters displayed latitudinal gradients, and we observed a strong similarity in the microbial eukaryotic communities as well as the environmental parameters between the sub-surface and the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) depths. Chlorophyll concentrations were low, and the mixed layer was shallow for most of the 17 stations sampled. The richness of the microplankton was higher in Marguerite Bay (our southernmost stations), compared to more northern stations, while the diversity for the nano- and pico-plankton was relatively stable across latitude. The microplankton communities were dominated by autotrophs, mostly diatoms, while mixotrophs (phototrophs-consuming bacteria and kleptoplastidic ciliates, mostly alveolates, and cryptophytes) were the most abundant and active members of the nano- and picoplankton communities. While phototrophy was the dominant trophic mode, heterotrophy (mixotrophy, phagotrophy, and parasitism) tended to increase southward. The samples from Marguerite Bay showed a distinct community with a high diversity of nanoplankton predators, including spirotrich ciliates, and dinoflagellates, while cryptophytes were observed elsewhere. Some lineages were significantly related—either positively or negatively—to ice coverage (e.g., positive for Pelagophyceae, negative for Spirotrichea) and temperature (e.g., positive for Cryptophyceae, negative for Spirotrichea). This suggests that climate changes will have a strong impact on the microbial eukaryotic community.

The Kuroshio is the western boundary current of the North Pacific Ocean. In the subtropical region of eastern Taiwan, a coastal uplift of the isotherms has occurred. To explore its impact on this oligotrophic ecosystem, hydrographic data along the transect line at 23.75°N were measured between September 2012 and September 2014. Results show that the intensity of coastal uplift was positively correlated to the flow volume transport of the Kuroshio. Significant dissolved inorganic nutrients were uplifted to the sunlit zone, especially in the onshore. For example, compared to the offshore, nitrate concentration increased 0.49 μM (or ∼178%) in the upper 100 m of the onshore. The increased nutrients thereafter enhanced the growth of phytoplankton; for instance, the Chl a concentration increased 88.3%, compared to offshore, in the upper 100 m of the onshore. Ocean acidification is posing a threat to calcifying organisms due to the increased energy requirements of calcification under high CO2 conditions. The ability of scleractinian corals to cope with future ocean conditions will thus depend on their ability to fulfil their carbon requirement. However, the primary productivity of coral holobionts is limited by low nitrogen (N) availability in coral reef waters. Here, we employed CO2 seeps of Tutum Bay (Papua New Guinea) as a natural laboratory to understand how coral holobionts offset their increased energy requirements under high CO2 conditions. Our results demonstrate for the first time that under high pCO2 conditions, N assimilation pathways of Pocillopora damicornis are jointly modified. We found that diazotroph‐derived N assimilation rates in the Symbiodiniaceae were significantly higher in comparison to an ambient CO2 control site, concomitant with a restructured diazotroph community and the specific prevalence of an alpha‐proteobacterium. Further, corals at the high CO2 site also had increased feeding rates on picoplankton and in particular exhibited selective feeding on Synechococcus sp., known to be rich in N. Given the high abundance of picoplankton in oligotrophic waters at large, our results suggest that corals exhibiting flexible diazotrophic communities and capable of exploiting N‐rich picoplankton sources to offset their increased N requirements may be able to cope better in a high pCO2 world. The present study involves the first measurements of size-fractionated biogenic silica (bSi) standing stocks and production rates in the oligotrophic Eastern Indian Ocean. The 150-m integrated bSi standing stocks in the pico- and nanosized fractions averaged 49% and 39%, respectively, of the total; the contributions of pico- and nanoplankton to total bSi production rates were 43% and 38%, respectively, together suggesting that these smaller plankton contributed a significant proportion of both the total bSi standing stock and its rate of production. The total bSi variability appeared to be driven by smaller-plankton dynamics. Also, our results suggest that the detrital bSi stocks were potentially sustained by the pico- and nanosized siliceous organisms (for example, Minidiscus and Synechococcus) instead of broken fragments of large diatoms or other siliceous microplankton. In particular, the atomically dense structure from Synechococcus cell lysis was enriched in Si element compared with intact cells. The factors controlling size-fractionated bSi standing stocks may be biological rather than physical processes, and the clear correlation between picoeukaryotes and the < 2 μm bSi further confirmed the possibility of Si accumulation by other smaller plankton. The diel variability of the abundance and cell size of picoplanktonic groups in the central Red Sea was monitored every 2 h in situ on 4 occasions (once per season) from 2015 to 2016. We distinguished Prochlorococcus, low (LF-Syn) and high (HF-Syn) fluorescence Synechococcus, small (Speuk) and large (Lpeuk) picoeukaryotes and two groups of heterotrophic prokaryotes of low (LNA) and high (HNA) nucleic acid content. The diel variability in abundance was less marked than in cell size and more apparent in autotrophs than heterotrophs. Specific growth rates were estimated by an empirical relationship from measurements obtained in bottle incubations of surface and deep samples collected in the winter compared with in situ variations in cell size over 24 h. Autotrophic picoplankton groups generally grew faster (0.23–0.77 d–1) than heterotrophic prokaryotes (0.12–0.50 d–1). Surface to 100 m depth-weighted specific growth rates displayed a clear seasonal pattern for Prochlorococcus, with maxima in winter (0.77 ± 0.07 d–1) and minima in fall (0.52 ± 0.07 d–1). The two groups of Synechococcus peaked in spring, with slightly higher growth rates of LF-Syn (0.57 ± 0.04 d–1) than HF-Syn (0.43 ± 0.04 d–1). Speuk and Lpeuk showed different seasonal patterns, with lower values of the former (0.27 ± 0.02 and 0.37 ± 0.04 d–1, respectively). HNA consistently outgrew LNA heterotrophic prokaryotes, with a higher growth in the epipelagic (0–200 m, 0.36 ± 0.03 d–1) than in the mesopelagic (200–700 m, 0.26 ± 0.03 d–1), while no differences were found for LNA cells (0.19 ± 0.03 d–1 and 0.17 ± 0.02 d–1, respectively). With all data pooled, the mean diel abundances of autotrophic picoplankton in the upper epipelagic and of HNA cells in the epipelagic and mesopelagic layers were significantly correlated with the specific growth rates estimated from cell size variations. Our high-resolution sampling dataset suggests that changes in growth rates underlie the noticeable seasonality of picoplankton recently described in these tropical waters.

Recent observations and numerical simulations have profoundly established that the C:N:P ratios in the ocean deviate from the canonical Redfield Ratio (106:16:1). Physical and biogeochemical processes have been hypothesized to be responsible for this deviation. However, a paucity of concurrent observations on biogeochemical and physical parameters have barred us to understand their exact role on the C:N:P ratios. For this purpose, we have sampled the Bay of Bengal for its C, N, and P contents in the organic and inorganic pools from 5 to 2000 m depth at eight stations (five coastal and three open ocean) during boreal spring 2019. Mesoscale anticyclonic eddies were identified at two of the sampling stations, where nutrient concentrations were lower in the top layer (5 m to the depth of chlorophyll maximum) compared to those at the non-eddy stations. Mean (NO3−+NO2−):PO43− ratio was lower at the anticyclonic eddy stations compared to that at the non-eddy stations in the top layer. Yet C:N:P ratios in the particulate and dissolved organic matter in the top layer were the same at anticyclonic eddy and non-eddy stations. Overall the mean C:N:P ratios were 249:39:1 in particulate organic matter and 2338:146:1 in dissolved organic matter in the top layer. Biological N2 fixation was not a driver in controlling the N:P ratio of the export flux and the subsurface water nutrient ratios during spring. Pico- and nano-eukaryotic plankton are important members of marine ecosystems. To understand their community structure and spatio-temporal variations in the Beibu Gulf, and to study the impact of Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP) located in the northwest coast of the Hainan Island on the eukaryotic plankton, we studied these issues in the coastal water near CNPP bimonthly from February 2018 to January 2019 via 18S Illumina sequencing. The results reveal a higher genetic alpha-diversity and less beta-diversity of the plankton community in small-size (0.45–5 µm and 5–20 µm) fractions than in large-size (20–200 µm and >20 µm) fractions. The small-sized phytoplankton, including Micromonas (Chlorophyta) and Minutocellus (Bacillariophyta), as well as heterotrophic plankton, including Paraphysomonas (Chrysophyceae), Ellobiopsis (Dinoflagellates), and Syndiniales (Dinoflagellates), took up a considerable proportion in eukaryotic plankton community. In addition, it showed a slight temperature increase and no significant difference in eukaryotic plankton community between the outfall of CNPP and other sampling sites, suggesting that the impact of the thermal discharge from the CNPP on local eukaryotic plankton community was limited. We analyzed the spatial changes, covering lotic and lentic stretches along a gradient of 262 km from Andes to steppe, and we also sampled the main affluent of the Limay River (Collon Cura). In all sampling sites the main limnological variables were measured, and the picoplankton abundance (autotrophic and heterotrophic) was analyzed by flow cytometry. The bacterial biodiversity was assessed using high throughput sequencing Illumina MiSeq. We expected an increase in the trophic state along this series of cascade reservoirs, which would determine spatial differences in the structure of the picoplankton communities. We also hypothesized that the lotic and lentic conditions along the system would influence the bacterial composition. The results showed a slight increase in trophic state together with an increase in overall picoplankton abundance downstream, towards Ramos Mexía Reservoir. Picocyanobacteria were represented by phycoerythrin-rich cells all along the system, in accordance to the pattern described for oligotrophic aquatic ecosystems. Multivariate analyses based on bacterial OTU composition and environmental variables showed a spatial ordination of sites following the trend of increasing trophic state downstream. Molecular analyses of bacterial OTU diversity also showed an increase in richness and a decrease in evenness at the lotic stretches, and the opposite pattern in the reservoirs, suggesting that water retention time may play a role in structuring the community composition. Eight diel surveys on picoplankton (Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus, picoeukaryotes, and heterotrophic bacteria) abundance at the South East Asian Time-Series Station (SEATS; 18°N; 116°E) were conducted during the period of 2010 to 2014. The results indicated that Prochlorococcus and picoeukaryotes showed a subsurface maximum in warm seasons (spring, summer, and fall) and were abundant at the surface in the cold season (winter). Synechococcus and heterotrophic bacteria exhibited higher cell numbers at the surface and decreased with depth throughout the year. Although not all, some clear diel patterns for picoplankton were observed. Picophytoplankton usually peaked in the nighttime; picoeukaryotes peaked at ~7 to 8 p.m., followed by Synechococcus (peaking at 1 a.m.) and Prochlorococcus (peaking at 2 a.m.). Unlike these picoautotrophs, heterotrophic bacteria could peak either at dusk (i.e., 7 p.m.) or at noon. Seasonally, Prochlorococcus was more abundant in the warm than the cold seasons, while Synechococcus and picoeukaryotes showed blooms in the winter of 2013 and 2011, respectively. Heterotrophic bacteria showed no significant seasonality. Regression analysis indicated that ~73% of the diel-to-seasonal variation of the euphotic zone depth-integrated picophytoplankton biomass (i.e., PicoBeu) could be explained by the changes of the mixed-layer depth (MLD), and this suggested that inorganic nutrient supply could be the major controlling factor in their growth. The strong linear relationship (coefficient of determination, R2 of 0.83, p < 0.01) between sea surface temperature (SST) and PicoBeu implied, for the first time, a potential of using satellite-based SST to trace the biomass of picophytoplankton in the pelagic areas of the northern South China Sea.

Biological organic carbon production and consumption play a fundamental role in the understanding of organic carbon cycling in oceans. However, studies on them in the Kuroshio, the western boundary current in the North Pacific Ocean, are scarce. To better understand the variations of plankton community respiration (CR) and particulate organic carbon (POC), eight cruises. which covered four seasons over a 2-year period, were surveyed across the Kuroshio at the KTV1 transect east of Taiwan. Spatially, a coastal uplift of isotherms (i.e., onshore lifting and offshore deepening) was observed along the KTV1 transect. During the uplift, the cold and nutrient-rich deep waters shoal to shallow water and enhance phytoplankton growth, resulting in higher values of phytoplankton, POC, and plankton CR on the onshore side. In this study, phytoplankton was dominated by picophytoplankton including Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus, and picoeukaryotes. Plankton CR was low, and its mean depth-normalized integrated rate (the upper 100 m water depth) ranged from 7.07 to 22.27 mg C m−3 d−1, to which the picophytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria contributed the most. The mean depth-normalized integrated value of POC ranged from 12.7 to 21.6 μg C L−1. POC is mainly associated with phytoplankton biomass with a mean carbon ratio of chlorophyll a/POC ≈ 1.03. All results suggest that plankton CR and POC variations may be associated with picoplankton dynamics in the Kuroshio.

In this first comprehensive study of Lake Winnipeg’s microbial communities, limnetic and littoral euphotic zones were examined during each season from 2016 through 2020. Classical cultivation and modern high-throughput sequencing techniques provided quantification and identification of key phototrophic populations, including aerobic anoxygenic phototrophs (AAP). Annual dynamics found total heterotrophs reached 4.23 × 106 CFU/g in littoral sands, and 7.69 × 104 CFU/mL in summer littoral waters on oligotrophic media, higher counts than for copiotrophic compositions. Limnetic numbers inversely dipped to 4.34 × 103 CFU/mL midsummer. Cultured AAP did not follow heterotrophic trends, instead peaking during the spring in both littoral and limnetic waters as 19.1 and 4.7% of total copiotrophs, or 3.9 and 4.9% of oligotrophs, decreasing till autumn each year. Complementary observations came from environmental 16S V4 rRNA gene analysis, as AAP made up 1.49 and 1.02% of the littoral and limnetic sequenced communities in the spring, declining with seasonal progression. Spatial and temporal fluctuations of microbes compared to environmental factors exposed photosynthetic populations to independently and regularly fluctuate in the ecosystem. Oxygenic phototrophic numbers expectantly matched the midsummer peak of Chl a and b, oxygenic photosynthesis related carbon fixation, and water temperature. Independently, AAP particularly colonized spring littoral areas more than limnetic, and directly corresponded to habitat conditions that specifically promoted growth: the requirement of light and organic material.

Reef-building corals generally thrive in nutrient-poor tropical waters, where among other elements, nitrogen (N) availability often limits primary productivity. In addition to their close association with endosymbiotic dinoflagellates of the family Symbiodiniaceae, enabling an effective use and retention of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), scleractinian corals have developed strategies to acquire new N: (1) They can ingest N-rich sediment particles and preys (from picoplankton to macro-zooplankton) via heterotrophy, including diazotrophs [plankton fixing dinitrogen (N2) and releasing part of this nitrogen—Diazotroph-Derived N (DDN)—in seawater], a pathway called “heterotrophic nutrition on diazotrophs”; (2) Symbiotic diazotrophs located in the coral holobiont have the molecular machinery to fix N2, a pathway called “symbiotic N2 fixation”. Here we used the 15N2 isotopic labeling in a series of incubations to investigate the relative contribution of each of these DDN transfer pathways in three worldwide distributed coral species: Acropora muricata, Galaxea fascicularis, and Pocillopora damicornis. We show that N provision via “symbiotic N2 fixation” is negligible compared to that obtained via “heterotrophic nutrition on diazotrophs,” with DDN assimilation rates about a thousand times lower for P. damicornis and G. fascicularis, or assimilation rates via “symbiotic N2 fixation” almost nil for A. muricata. Through heterotrophic feeding on planktonic diazotrophs, only G. fascicularis and P. damicornis can successfully obtain N and fulfill a large part of their N requirements (DDN asimilation rates: 0.111 ± 0.056 and 0.517 ± 0.070 μg N cm–2 h–1 in their Symbiodiniaceae, respectively). Whereas this contribution is again negligible for A. muricata. They also largely consume the picoplankton that likely benefit from this DDN (Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus cells; respectively, 2.56 ± 1.57 104 and 2.70 ± 1.66 104 cell h–1 cm–2 for G. fascicularis; 3.02 ± 0.19 105 and 1.14 ± 0.79 104 cell h–1 cm–2 for P. damicornis). The present study confirms the different dependencies of the three tested species regarding heterotrophy, with P. damicornis and G. fascicularis appearing highly efficient at capturing plankton, while A. muricata, considered as mainly autotroph, does not rely on these food resources to meet its N and energy needs.

Coral reefs are possible sinks for microbes; however, the removal mechanisms at play are not well understood. Here, we characterize pelagic microbial groups at the CARMABI reef (Curaçao) and examine microbial consumption by three coral species: Madracis mirabilis, Porites astreoides, and Stephanocoenia intersepta. Flow cytometry analyses of water samples collected from a depth of 10 m identified 6 microbial groups: Prochlorococcus, three groups of Synechococcus, photosynthetic eukaryotes, and heterotrophic bacteria. Minimum growth rates (μ) for Prochlorococcus, all Synechococcus groups, and photosynthetic eukaryotes were 0.55, 0.29, and 0.45μ day-1, respectively, and suggest relatively high rates of productivity despite low nutrient conditions on the reef. During a series of 5-h incubations with reef corals performed just after sunset or prior to sunrise, reductions in the abundance of photosynthetic picoeukaryotes, Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus cells, were observed. Of the three Synechococcus groups, one decreased significantly during incubations with each coral and the other two only with M. mirabilis. Removal of carbon from the water column is based on coral consumption rates of phytoplankton and averaged between 138 ng h-1 and 387 ng h-1, depending on the coral species. A lack of coral-dependent reduction in heterotrophic bacteria, differences in Synechococcus reductions, and diurnal variation in reductions of Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus, coinciding with peak cell division, point to selective feeding by corals. Our study indicates that bentho-pelagic coupling via selective grazing of microbial groups influences carbon flow and supports heterogeneity of microbial communities overlying coral reefs. A healthy marine ecosystem is a fully functioning system, able to supply ecosystem services whilst still maintaining resilience to human-induced environmental change. Monitoring and managing the health of resilient marine ecosystems requires indicators that can assess their biodiversity state and food web functioning. Plankton are crucial components of pelagic habitats, occupying the base of the pelagic food web. Larger plankton have long been used to monitor ecosystem productivity and biodiversity due to their identification via traditional light microscopy. In contrast, the regular monitoring of pico- and nanoplankton (<20 µm; hereafter called "tiny plankton") only started with the development of flow cytometry techniques, which has limited their inclusion as ecosystem health indicators. Four UK plankton surveys have sampled and identified these tiny plankton for up to 14 years, providing an opportunity to test their suitability as indicators of ecosystem state. We investigated six groups of tiny plankton, including heterotrophic nanoeukaryotes, photosynthetic nanoeukaryotes, photosynthetic picoeukaryotes, and Synechococcus cyanobacteria, and two groups of heterotrophic bacteria. Flow cytometry and light microscopy data from an inshore Western English Channel station revealed that 99.98 % of plankton abundance and 71 % of plankton biomass was derived from tiny plankton cells too small to be quantified accurately under a light microscope and thus not adequately considered in assessments of pelagic habitats. Different UK marine and coastal regions showed consistency in peak abundances of these tiny plankton. We used a novel wavelet coherence method to identify time-based relationships between tiny plankton and environmental variables linked to human pressures. Relationships were found between nitrogenous nutrients and all tiny plankton groups, most commonly at sub-annual to annual time scales. Photosynthetic picoeukaryotes, heterotrophic nanoeukaryotes, and HNA-bacteria were associated with high sea surface temperatures. Given the here established relationship between tiny plankton and environmental variables, and their importance in the full plankton assemblage, we recommend that, alongside existing microplankton lifeforms, tiny plankton groups can be used as plankton lifeforms, either individually or in combination, to inform biodiversity indicators that meet policy obligations under the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), (Oslo-Paris Convention) OSPAR strategies, and the UK Marine Strategy. The distribution and variability of phytoplankton in the upper layers of the ocean are highly correlated with physical processes at different time and spatial scales. Model simulations have shown that submesoscale features play a pivotal role on plankton distribution, metabolism and carbon fluxes. However, there is a lack of observational studies that provide evidence for the complexity of short-term phytoplankton distribution and variability inferred from theoretical and modeling approaches. In the present study, the development and decay of a submesoscale front south of Gran Canaria Island is tracked at scales not considered in regular oceanographic samplings in order to analyze the picoplankton response to short-term variability. Likewise, the contribution of each scale of variability to the total variance of the picophytoplankton community has been quantified. We observe statistically different picophytoplankton assemblages across stations closer than 5 km, and between time periods shorter than 24 h, which were related to high physical spatiotemporal variability. Our results suggest that both temporal and spatial variability may equally contribute to the total variance of picoplankton community in the mixed layer, while time is the principal contributor to total variance in the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM).

Lake Tahoe is an oligotrophic lake appreciated for its transparent waters, yet the Lake's clarity has been declining for several decades due in part to eutrophication. At the same time, a shift from nitrogen (N) toward phosphorus (P) limitation of phytoplankton has occurred that could be due to atmospheric deposition of nutrients with high N:P ratios. Atmospheric particle samples collected during 2005–2006 had a mean soluble N:P ratio of 192:1, well above the Redfield ratio of 16:1 typically required by phytoplankton. Samples collected during the Angora Fire that occurred in 2007 were particularly enriched in N relative to P, with a mean ratio >2800:1. The distribution and ecology of autotrophic pico- and nanoplankton were studied in the warm core eddy-affected northern Bay of Bengal (BoB) during the peak south-west monsoon of 2012. Small phototrophs showed diverse response patterns to the contrasting environmental setting in the northern BoB during the south-west monsoon. The convergence of surface waters in the eddy-influenced region was evidenced in terms of a deeper mixed layer and lower concentrations of N O 3 − . Synechococcus and picoeukaryotes were found to be more abundant in coastal waters as compared with the warm core eddy-influenced and offshore waters. Prochlorococcus was more abundant in the eddy-influenced and the offshore regions possibly as a consequence of their ability to survive in low-nutrient/oligotrophic waters. The abundance of Synechococcus increased noticeably in the coastal and subsurface waters due to their affinity towards higher concentrations of nutrients. The present data therefore support the view of a community shift induced by warm core water eddies and show their importance in promoting primary production by Prochlorococcus in the mixed layers of the BoB. Climate change alters environmental conditions that are expected to have a profound effect on the biodiversity, community composition, and metabolic processes of microeukaryotic plankton in Arctic and Subarctic coastal waters. The molecular biodiversity [large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene] of three plankton size-fractions (micro-, nano-, and picoplankton) from coastal waters of ice-influenced west Greenland was compared with fractions from ice-free northwest Iceland within their summer environmental context. Putative metabolic functions were determined by differentially expressed mRNA (metatranscriptomics) of the microplankton. The Red Sea is characterized by higher temperatures and salinities than other oligotrophic tropical regions. Here, we investigated the vertical and seasonal variations in the abundance and biomass of autotrophic and heterotrophic picoplankton. Using flow cytometry, we consistently observed five groups of autotrophs (Prochlorococcus, two populations of Synechococcus separated by their relative phycoerythrin fluorescence, low (LF-Syn) and high (HF-Syn), and two differently-sized groups of picoeukaryotes, small (Speuk) and large (Lpeuk)) and two groups of heterotrophic prokaryotes of low and high nucleic acid content (LNA and HNA, respectively). Samples were collected in 15 surveys conducted from 2015 to 2017 at a 700-m depth station in the central Red Sea. Surface temperature ranged from 24.6 to 32.6 °C with a constant value of 21.7 °C below 200 m. Integrated (0–100 m) chlorophyll a concentrations were low, with maximum values in fall (24.0 ± 2.7 mg m−2) and minima in spring and summer (16.1 ± 1.9 and 1.1 mg m−2, respectively). Picoplankton abundance was generally lower than in other tropical environments. Vertical distributions differed for each group, with Synechococcus and LNA prokaryotes more abundant at the surface while Prochlorococcus, picoeukaryotes and HNA prokaryotes peaked at the deep chlorophyll maximum, located between 40 and 76 m. Surface to 100 m depth-weighted abundances exhibited clear seasonal patterns for Prochlorococcus, with maxima in summer (7.83 × 104 cells mL−1, July 2015) and minima in winter (1.39 × 104 cells mL−1, January 2015). LF-Syn (0.32 – 2.70 × 104 cells mL−1 ), HF-Syn (1.11 – 3.20 × 104 cells mL−1) and Speuk (0.99 – 4.81 × 102 cells mL−1) showed an inverse pattern to Prochlorococcus, while Lpeuk (0.16 – 7.05 × 104 cells mL−1) peaked in fall. Synechococcus unexpectedly outnumbered Prochlorococcus in winter and at the end of fall. The seasonality of heterotrophic prokaryotes (2.29 – 4.21×105 cells mL−1 ) was less noticeable than autotrophic picoplankton. The contribution of HNA cells was generally low in the upper layers, ranging from 36% in late spring and early summer to ca. 50% in winter and fall. Autotrophs dominated integrated picoplankton biomass in the upper 100 m, with 1.4-fold higher values in summer than in winter (mean 387 and 272 mg C m–2, respectively). However, when the whole water column was considered, the biomass of heterotrophic prokaryotes exceeded that of autotrophic picoplankton with an average of 411 mg C m–2. Despite being located in tropical waters, our results show that the picoplankton community seasonal differences in the central Red Sea are not fundamentally different from higher latitude regions.

The diel cycle is of enormous biological importance in that it imposes temporal structure on ecosystem productivity. In the world’s oceans, microorganisms form complex communities that carry out about half of photosynthesis and the bulk of life-sustaining nutrient cycling. How the functioning of microbial communities is impacted by day and night periods in surface seawater remains to be elucidated. In this study, we compared the day and night metaproteomes of the free-living and the particle-attached bacterial fractions from picoplanktonic communities sampled from the northwest Mediterranean Sea surface. Our results showed similar taxonomic distribution of free-living and particle-attached bacterial populations, with Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria and Cyanobacteria being the most active members. Comparison of the day and night metaproteomes revealed that free-living and particle-attached bacteria were more active during the day and the night, respectively. Interestingly, protein diel variations were observed in the photoautotroph Synechococcales and in (photo)-heterotrophic bacteria such as Flavobacteriales, Pelagibacterales and Rhodobacterales. Moreover, our data demonstrated that diel cycle impacts light-dependent processes such as photosynthesis and UV-stress response in Synechococcales and Rhodobacterales, respectively, while the protein regulation from the ubiquitous Pelagibacterales remained stable over time. This study unravels, for the first time, the diel variation in the protein expression of major free-living and particle-attached microbial players at the sea surface, totaling an analysis of eight metaproteomes.

The creation and delimitation of marine protected areas has generally been carried out without considering the three-dimensional and open nature of the marine environament, neither planktonic dispersion or the hydrodynamics, which determine the composition, structure, distribution and dynamics of the communities. The Maritime-Land National Park of the Cabrera Archipelago (MLNPCA) was not an exception. Nowadays, accurate information on its hydrographic environment, pelagic communities, and even on the processes of export and larval retention inside the MLNPCA, is crucial for the correct management. This chapter describes the current state of knowledge of the pelagic communities in the MLNPCA environment, previously explaining the sampling strategies of the main programs and research projects carried out in the last 25 years. The main results and conclusions of the studies on the communities that inhabit the water column, from bacteria to large pelagic fish, are summarized, paying special attention to the processes that affect the spatio-temporal dynamics of meroplankton (eggs and larvae of marine organisms). It is worth highlighting the great biodiversity observed in many taxonomic groups, similar to subtropical areas. An annual cycle is given in the composition of the different communities, with two well diferentiated periods: one of a mixture water column, more productive, and another with a strong stratification (thermocline) that limits the vertical moviments. However, there is a great variability in the pelagic communities, associated with surface water bodies, wether those of Atlantic origin or Mediterranean residents. As regards the processes of export and larval retention in the MLNPCA, they depend mostly on a combination of ephemeral retention processes (dependent on the wind and topography), and on the initial distribution and evolution of the behavior of larvae along the ontogeny. Marine picoplankton, including prokaryotic and eukaryotic picoplankton, drive many biogeochemical processes, such as carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycles, making them crucial to the marine ecosystem. Despite the fact that picoplankton is prevalent, its diversity and spatial distribution from the Straits of Malacca (SM) to the South China Sea (SCS) remain poorly investigated. This work explores the phylogenetic diversity and community structure of picoplankton in relation to environmental factors from the SM to the SCS. To this end, the Illumina MiSeq sequencing technique was applied to 16S and 18S rRNA genes. The results showed significant differences in the dynamics of picoplankton between the open sea and the strait region. Proteobacteria and Cyanobacteria constituted a larger part of the prokaryotic group. Within Cyanobacteria, the abundance of Prochlorococcus in the open sea was significantly higher than that of Synechococcus, while the opposite trend was observed in the strait. Dinoflagellata, Cnidaria, Retaria, Tunicata, and Arthropoda dominated among the eukaryotic taxa. High-throughput sequencing data indicated that salinity, temperature and NO2-N were the key factors determining the prokaryotic community structure, while temperature and dissolved oxygen determined the eukaryotic community structure in the studied region. A model for overcoming the gravity by sea-picoplankton cells is proposed here. It is based on different means of escaping from potential predators used by cells of co-existing picoplankton species. These different means cause friction anisotropy of motile cells with strong antipredator behavior (AB). According to equations of stochastic movement used in this model for picoplankton cells with strong AB, collocated with high concentration of cells with weak or absent AB, the sedimentation can be considerably overcome.
