Humans have been using plants in the treatment of various diseases for millennia. Currently, even with allopathic medicines available, numerous populations globally still use plants for therapeutic purposes. Although plants constitute a safer alternative compared to synthetic agents, it is well established that medicinal plants might also exert adverse effects. Thus, the present investigation aimed to assess the phytotoxic, cytotoxic, and genotoxic potential of two plants from the Brazilian Cerrado used in popular medicine, Davilla nitida (Vahl) Kubitzki, and Davilla elliptica (A. St.-Hil.). To this end, germination, growth, and cell cycle analyses were conducted using the plant model Lactuca sativa. Seeds and roots were treated with 0.0625 to 1 g/L for 48 hr under controlled conditions. The germination test demonstrated significant phytotoxic effects for both species at the highest concentrations tested, while none of the extracts produced significant effects in the lettuce growth test. In the microscopic analyses, the aneugenic and cytotoxic action of D. elliptica was evident. In the case of D. nitida greater clastogenic action and induction of micronuclei, (MN) were noted suggesting that the damage initiated by exposure to these extracts was not repaired or led to apoptosis. These findings indicated that the observed plant damage was transmitted to the next generation of cells by way of MN. These differences in the action of the two species may not be attributed to qualitative variations in the composition of the extracts as both are similar, but to quantitative differences associated with synergistic and antagonistic interactions between the compounds present in these extracts. Phytotoxic effects of herbicides have been reported on non-target plant species. This study was performed to investigate the growth of Napier grass cv. Pak Chong 1 in herbicide atrazine-contaminated soil; the effect of 1-naphthalene acetic acid, 6-benzyladenine and thidiazuron to stimulate the growth of grass grown in atrazine-contaminated soil; and to determine the remaining atrazine in the soil. The experiment was performed in a factorial completely randomized design with 2 × 10 factors. The first factor was atrazine concentration and the second factor was the application of plant growth regulator. The growth of the plants and atrazine remaining in the soil was analyzed at the end of the experiment (after 26 days). The results showed that Napier grass cv. Pak Chong 1 was tolerant to 6.8 mg/kg atrazine contamination in soil. The shoot growth and root growth of grass grown in atrazine-contaminated soil did not significantly differ from that grown in non-contaminated soil. Thidiazuron and 6-benzyladenine at 0.1 mg/l tended to increase the shoot dry weight of the grass grown in both atrazine-contaminated and non-contaminated soil. Additionally, 10 mg/l of thidiazuron and 1-naphthalene acetic acid tended to decrease the shoot growth of grass grown in both contaminated and non-contaminated soil. Formaldehyde is a prominent volatile organic compound and also considered as an indoor air pollutant. Chlorophytum comosum, an indoor plant, has been reported to metabolize indoor formaldehyde. But the phytotoxic effects of formaldehyde, being a pollutant, on C. comosum are not well explored. Furthermore, C. comosum responses that can be considered as markers at the physiological and biochemical level against formaldehyde stress are not yet investigated. Therefore, the current research study was aimed to evaluate such potential markers against formaldehyde in C. comosum. Briefly, C. comosum was exposed to 5-, 10-, and 20-ppm formaldehyde doses in an airtight glass chamber. Plant samples were then taken to analyze morpho-anatomical, physiological, and biochemical responses after short (2, 4, and 6 h), medium (12 and 24 h), and extended durations (48 and 96 h) for each tested dose. Application of 10 and 20 ppm formaldehyde doses leads to a significant incline in enzymatic antioxidants. Formaldehyde concentration of 10 ppm leads to a maximum increase in catalase (30.30 U/mg of protein), guaiacol peroxidase (135.64 U/mg of protein), and superoxide dismutase (44.76 U/mg of protein) compared to their respective controls. A significant change is also observed in non-enzymatic parameters, including total phenolic content, which ranged from 3.62 mg GAE/g (control) to 10.51 mg GAE/g, total antioxidants vary from 27.37% (control) to 85.05% in 20 ppm formaldehyde, respectively. However, formaldehyde application negatively affected the physiological responses of C. comosum by reducing its photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance. Additionally, extended exposure of C. comosum to 10- and 20-ppm formaldehyde doses leads to visible leaf damage. Principal component analysis indicated that enzymatic parameters including SOD, CAT, and GPX and non-enzymatic parameters including MDA, TPC, TFC, TAOs, carotenoids, TSS, and intercellular CO2 contributed the most to the total variance. In light of the increasing water scarcity and the need for sustainable waste management, the use of landfill leachate for irrigation has emerged as both a solution and a concern, posing potential risks to soil health and plant vitality. This study examined the multifaceted impacts of leachate irrigation on the soil characteristics, plant growth, and enzymatic activities of Medicago sativa (M. sativa). By exposing alfalfa to different concentrations of leachate, we assessed the influence on heavy metal accumulation, physiological parameters, and enzyme functions. The physicochemical profile of the leachate indicated that the pH was within acceptable limits, but the chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), and concentrations of lead (Pb) and aluminum (Al) exceeded regulatory standards. Morphological parameters exhibited dual effects: stimulation at lower leachate doses and inhibition at higher leachate doses. Our findings show that soil acts as a buffer, reducing heavy metal uptake by plants. Enzymatic activities, including catalase, peroxidase, and succinate dehydrogenase, fluctuated significantly at higher leachate concentrations, indicating stress responses. This research underscores the interplay between leachate irrigation, plant physiology, and soil health, emphasizing sustainable management to optimize plant growth and minimize environmental impacts. The unregulated use and improper management of herbicides can cause negative effects on non-target species and promote changes in biological communities. Therefore, the current study is aimed at understanding morphoanatomical responses and effects on seedling development induced by the herbicides glyphosate and saflufenacil in Enterolobium contortisiliquum, a non-target tropical species. The plants were cultivated in a greenhouse and subjected to herbicides at doses of 0, 160, 480, and 1440 g a.e ha−1 for glyphosate, and 0, 25, 50, and 100 g a.i ha−1 for saflufenacil. We conducted visual and morphological assessments over 90 days post-application. Leaf samples were collected 12 days after the application for anatomical analysis, and we also performed a micromorphometric analysis of the leaf tissues. Biomarkers of phytotoxicity were identified in plants exposed to both herbicides, even at the lowest doses, including in leaves without visual symptoms. The main morphological alterations were the decrease in growth, stem diameter, and dry mass. Furthermore, the leaves and stems visually exhibited chlorosis and necrosis. Both herbicides triggered anatomical modifications such as significant changes (p < 0.05) in the thickness of leaf tissues, hypertrophy, cell collapse, and changes in epicuticular waxes. However, the alterations induced by glyphosate were more widespread compared to saflufenacil, encompassing alterations in the root system. We confirmed that the different mechanisms of action of each herbicide and the existence of an underground reserve system in this species are intrinsically linked to the morphological and developmental responses described. Our findings suggest that E. contortisiliquum could be a potential bioindicator species for these herbicides in the environment, even at concentrations lower than those typically recommended for field application. The textile industry flourished swiftly globally due to rapid industrialization. Consequently, hazardous and toxic dyes discharged into aquatic ecosystems adversely impact the stability of the ecosystem, plants and humans. This study focused on cost-efficient, eco-friendly and sustainable techniques to remediate textile effluents. Phytoremediation using Pistia stratiotes and biologically synthesized copper nanoparticles were used to remove mixed dyes. The size of the CuO NPs ranged from 16 nm – to 32 nm. Optimum degradation up to 68.2% was attained at 500 mg/L utilizing Pistia stratiotes. A kinetic study revealed that 50 mg of copper oxide nanoparticles could effectively degrade different concentrations of mixed dyes. Wastewater analysis, such as TDS, Nitrate, Chloride, DO and BOD, was carried out for five days. Histopathological examination revealed that mixed dye affected the leaves and roots of Pistia stratiotes. Phytotoxicity analysis was performed using PTC technique employing Vigna radiata which exhibited tolerance against highest and lowest concentration of dye aiding seed germination at 10 and 100 mg/L. When both phytoremediation and nanoparticles were implemented, mixed dye removal efficacy increased from 28.2% to 45.7%. The novel brominated flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) has biological toxicity, persistence, long-range migration and bioaccumulation ability. However, there is currently little research on the phytotoxicity of DBDPE in plants. The perennial herbaceous plant tall fescue (Festuca elata Keng ex E. B. Alexeev) was selected as the model organism for use in seed germination experiments, and the phytotoxicity of DBDPE in the soil of tall fescue was studied. The results indicated that DBDPE had a significant effect on the germination and growth of tall fescue seedlings. Citric acid reduced the stress caused by DBDPE in plants, effectively alleviating the phytotoxicity of DBDPE in tall fescue. The root vitality and protein content significantly increased after the application of citric acid, increasing by 74.93–183.90%, 146.44–147.67%, respectively. The contents of proline and soluble sugars significantly decreased after the application of citric acid, decreasing by 45.18–59.69% and 23.03%, respectively (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in superoxide dismutase (SOD) or peroxidase (POD) activity in tall fescue seedlings, and the catalase (CAT) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were significantly lower after the application of citric acid, decreasing by 64.62–67.91% and 29.10–49.80%, respectively (P < 0.05). Tall fescue seedlings bioaccumulated DBDPE, with biological concentration factors (BCFs) ranging from 4.28 to 18.38 and transfer factors (TFs) ranging from 0.43 to 0.54. This study provides theoretical support for the study of the toxicity of DBDPE to plants and offers a research foundation for exploring the phytoremediation of DBDPE-contaminated soil by tall fescue. Leachate generated from landfills contains many toxic contaminants, such as dissolved organics, inorganic salts, ammonia, and heavy metals, which impact the surrounding environmental systems. This study characterized the AL-Mufarrihat Sanitary Landfill (MSL) leachate in Al-Medinah Al-Munawwarh (MM) province, Saudi Arabia, by analyzing important physicochemical parameters. Phytotoxicity was assessed using various higher plant bioassays, namely, cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum L.), cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.), and corn (Zea mays L.). The effective concentration of seed germination represented by EC50 was calculated using a USEPA computer program based on Finney's Probit analysis method. Selected phytotoxicity test endpoint parameters, namely relative seed germination (RSG), relative root elongation (RRE), and germination index (GI) were determined. The tested leachate exhibited low concentrations of heavy metals, whereas high levels of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) were recorded. The mean EC50 values for MSL leachate exposed to B. oleracea, L. esculentum, C. sativus, and Z. mays were 2.66%, 3.12%, 4.27%, and 5.22%, respectively. These values indicate that B. oleracea was the most sensitive bioassay, whereas Z. mays was the least sensitive. All tested bioassays showed severe phytotoxic responses to the exposed higher leachate concentrations, represented by complete inhibition for RSG, RRE, and GI. Lower leachate concentrations exhibited stimulatory effects on RSG, whereas RRE and GI were hindered, even at these lower concentrations. The results revealed that although RSG and RRE were effective and promising parameters in phytotoxicity evaluation, GI was the most responsive parameter for phytotoxicity assessment. The high levels of organic and inorganic compounds in the leachate are likely the primary cause of the phytotoxicity observed in the bioassays. The results of this study highlight the pollution potential of landfill leachate in Saudi Arabia and will furnish supplementary reference information for hazard assessment and future leachate management. The mobility of arsenic compounds in the soil-plant system and its interaction with biogenic macroelements K, P, Ca, Mg, Si, S, Na in plants under conditions of toxic stress have been studied. This is illustrated by the wheatgrass Elytrigia repens. It has been established that the root system is responsible for protecting the aerial part of wheatgrass from excess arsenic, and it is of great importance for phytostabilisation of arsenic pollution therefore indicating the increased tolerance of this plant. The intensity of As accumulation in plants depends on its speciation in the soil. Antagonism of the main essential elements (K, P) to the accumulation of As in wheatgrass shoots is observed. It can lead to disruption of metabolic processes in plant cells. It has been shown that changes in the K+/Na + values may lead to violation of osmotic processes in the aerial plant organs and contribute to their degradation not only under salt stress but also under the influence of higher concentrations of As in the plants. In areas intensively contaminated with arsenic, a decrease in the K/Na value in the above-ground organs of wheatgrass can be used as a criterion for the degree of phytotoxicity. Background: Soil pollution by petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) reduces yield by changing the physico-chemical properties of soil and plants due to PHCs' biotoxicity and persistence. Thus, removing PHCs from the soil is crucial for ecological sustainability. Microbes-assisted phytoremediation is an economical and eco-friendly solution. The current work aimed to develop and use bacterial consortia (BC) for PHCs degradation and plant growth enhancement in hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. Initially, the enriched microbial cultures (that were prepared from PHCs-contaminated soils from five distinct regions) were obtained via screening through microcosm experiments. Afterward, two best microbial cultures were tested for PHCs degradation under various temperature and pH ranges. After culture optimization, isolation and characterization of bacterial strains were done to construct two BC. These constructed BC were tested in a pot experiment for hydrocarbons degradation and chickpea growth in PHCs contaminated soil. Results: Findings revealed that PHCs exerted significant phytotoxic effects on chickpea growth and physiology when cultivated in PHCs contaminated soil, reducing agronomic and physiological traits by 13–29% and 12–43%, respectively. However, in the presence of BC, the phytotoxic impacts of PHCs on chickpea plants were reduced, resulting in up to 24 − 35% improvement in agronomic and physiological characteristics as compared to un-inoculated contaminated controls. Furthermore, the bacterial consortia boosted chickpea's nutritional absorption and antioxidant mechanism. Most importantly, chickpea plants phytoremediated 52% of the initial PHCs concentration; however, adding BC1 and BC2 with chickpea plants further increased this removal and remediated 74% and 80% of the initial PHCs concentration, respectively. Conclusion: In general, BC2 outperformed BC1 (with few exceptions) in promoting plant growth and PHCs elimination. Therefore, using multi-trait BC for PHCs degradation and plant growth improvement under PHCs stress may be an efficient and environmentally friendly strategy to deal with PHCs pollution and toxicity. Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) pollution poses significant health and ecological risks warranting cost-effective remediation. This study investigated the efficacy of zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) and Miscanthus lutarioriparius synergism for Cr(VI) immobilization and stabilization. nZnO characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS and DLS was amended to 3 mg kg−1 Cr(VI) spiked soil pots at 0.5 % and 1 %. M. lutarioriparius seedlings were then transplanted and grown for 3 months. Results showed increase in residual soil Cr(III) from negligible to 68.9 % upon 1 % nZnO indicating reduction of Cr(VI). Maximum decline of 76.3 % in total Cr(VI) confirmed immobilization. Batch adsorption experiments revealed rising Cr(VI) removal from 61.3 % to 83.7 % by increase in nZnO dose from 0.2 to 1 g L−1. M. lutarioriparius demonstrated hyperaccumulator ability uptaking 208.3 and 156.8 mg kg−1 Cr in roots and shoots respectively. Restricted root-shoot translocation factor of 0.79 aided suitability for phytostabilization. The plant-nZnO synergy enhanced remediation efficiency as confirmed by tolerance index restoration from 38.6 % to 100 %. Increased growth performance reflected mitigation of toxicity by restricted bioavailability. Overall, the nanoremediation strategy displayed high potential for effective in situ stabilization of Cr(VI) contamination combining favorable properties of nZnO and plant tolerance mechanisms. This study investigated the effects of corn cob biochar (CCB) and rice husk biochar (RHB) additions (at 0%, 5%, and 10% w/w) on nitrogen and carbon dynamics during co-composting with poultry litter, rice straw, and domestic bio-waste. The study further assessed the temperature, moisture, pH, and nutrient contents of the mature biochar co-composts, and their potential phytotoxicity effects on amaranth, cucumber, cowpea, and tomato. Biochar additions decreased NH4+-N and NO3- contents, but bacteria and fungi populations increased during the composting process. The mature biochar co-composts showed higher pH (9.0–9.7), and increased total carbon (24.7–37.6%), nitrogen (1.8–2.4%), phosphorus (6.5–8.1 g kg−1), potassium (26.8–42.5 g kg−1), calcium (25.1–49.5 g kg−1), and magnesium (4.8–7.2 g kg−1) contents compared to the compost without biochar. Germination indices (GI) recorded in all the plants tested with the different composts were greater than 60%. Regardless of the biochar additions, all composts treatments showed no or very minimal phytotoxic effects on cucumber, amaranth and cowpea seeds. Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV), being a mechanically transmitted disease, is usually difficult to control; therefore, an effective alternative to reduce transmission and replication in the crop is by spraying with chlorine dioxide (ClO2) during routine crop management. In this research, the efficacy of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) for ToBRFV management in a greenhouse and open field was determined. The phytotoxicity of ClO2 and its effective concentration against ToBRFV in Nicotiana longiflora plants were evaluated. Subsequently, the effect of ClO2 on ToBRFV was evaluated in tomato plants grown in an open field. Finally, the effectiveness of ClO2 on plants inoculated with ToBRFV under greenhouse conditions was evaluated and the number of necrotic local lesions (NLLs) was quantified. The results revealed that ClO2 at 760 mg L−1 did not show phytotoxicity and reduced the number of NLLs in N. longiflora plants. It also decreased ToBRFV transmission and replication in field- and greenhouse-grown tomato plants, improving agronomic parameters. ClO2 reduced replication in plants inoculated with different amounts of ToBRFV inoculum in a greenhouse. N. longiflora leaves expressed lower numbers of NLLs when inoculated with ClO2-treated tomato plant extracts. Finally, the results demonstrate that ClO2 represents an effective management alternative when used by direct application to plants. Naphthalene, a common member of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in various industrial applications, has garnered attention due to its genotoxic, mutagenic, and potentially carcinogenic effects on living organisms. Concerns have escalated regarding the widespread presence of naphthalene in the environment, its resistance to biodegradation, capacity for bioaccumulation, and associated adverse impacts. In response, numerous pilot treatment approaches have been explored to mitigate the economic consequences and prevent the degradation of soil and water quality resulting from naphthalene pollution. This study investigates the degradation of naphthalene using Kocuria rosea, a microorganism previously isolated from sawdust samples collected from a Sawmill in Ikenne, Ogun State, Southwestern Nigeria. Kocuria rosea was cultivated in nutrient broth (NB) for 24 h, and its growth was quantified through UV–Visible spectrophotometric analysis. The phytotoxicity of both untreated and treated naphthalene solutions was assessed by measuring their impact on the germination of Zea mays (corn) seeds. Furthermore, biodegradation of naphthalene was confirmed by analyzing FT-IR spectra. The results indicate that naphthalene exhibits phytotoxic effects on Z. mays germination, whereas treatment with the Kocuria rosea solution substantially increased the germination rate from 13.3 % to 46.67 %. FT-IR analysis reveals that Kocuria rosea effectively degrades naphthalene, as evidenced by the disappearance of characteristic peaks at 3049.56, 1593.25, 958.65, and 781.2. In conclusion, Kocuria rosea, isolated from a Sawmill in Ikenne, demonstrates significant potential for the bioremediation of naphthalene, offering promise as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach for mitigating naphthalene pollution. Environmental contamination of aquatic systems by per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has generated significant health concerns. Remediation of contaminated sites such as the fire‐fighting emergency training grounds that use aqueous film‐forming foams is a high priority. Phytoremediation may help play a part in removing PFAS from such contaminated waters. We investigated the potential of the water fern Azolla filiculoides, which is used for phytoremediation of a wide range of contaminants, to uptake seven common PFAS (perfluorobutanoic acid [PFBA], perfluorobutane sulfonic acid [PFBS], perfluoroheptanoic acid [PFHpA], perfluorohexanoic acid [PFHxA], perfluorohexane sulfonic acid [PFHxS], perfluorooctanoic acid [PFOA], and perfluoropentanoic acid [PFPeA]), during a 12‐day exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations delivered as equimolar mixtures: low (∑PFAS = 0.0123 ± 1.89 μmol L−1), medium (∑PFAS = 0.123 ± 2.88 μmol L−1), and high (∑PFAS = 1.39 μmol L−1) treatments, equivalent to approximately 5, 50, and 500 µg L−1 total PFAS, respectively. The possible phytotoxic effects of PFAS were measured at 3‐day intervals using chlorophyll a content, photosystem II efficiency (Fv/Fm), performance index, and specific growth rate. The PFAS concentrations in plant tissue and water were also measured every 3 days using ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography—tandem mass spectrometry. Treatments with PFAS did not lead to any detectable phytotoxic effects. All seven PFAS were detected in plant tissue, with the greatest uptake occurring during the first 6 days of exposure. After 12 days of exposure, a maximum bioconcentration factor was recorded for PFBA of 1.30 and a minimum of 0.192 for PFBS. Consequently, the application of Azolla spp. as a stand‐alone system for phytoremediation of PFAS in aquatic environments is not sufficient to substantially reduce PFAS concentrations. A global water crisis is emerging due to increasing levels of contaminated water and decreasing clean water supply on Earth. This study aims to address the removal of azo dye from wastewater to enable its reuse. Recently, utilizing microorganisms has been proven to be a practical choice for the remediation of azo dyes in wastewater. Hence, in this study, we employed a preformed biofilm of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on a solid support (called substrate) to degrade azo dyes. This process offers several advantages, such as stability, substrate portability, more biofilm production in less time, and efficient utilization of enzymes for remediation. From 50 ppm of initial Congo Red concentration, 75.74% decolorization was achieved within ten h using a preformed biofilm on a coverslip. A maximum of 52.27% decolorization was achieved using biofilm during its formation after 72 h of incubation. The Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis of Congo Red dye before and after remediation revealed a significant change in peak intensity, indicating dye degradation. Phytotoxicity studies performed by seed germination with Vigna radiata revealed that, after 5–7 days, almost 40% more seeds with longer root and shoot lengths were germinated in the presence of treated dye compared to the untreated one. This data indicated that the harmful Congo Red was successfully degraded to a non-toxic product by Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm grown on a glass substrate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here, we investigated the phytotoxicity, transformation, and bioaccumulation processes of two typical ZIFs (ZIF-8 and ZIF-67) in rice (Oryza sativa L.) under hydroponic conditions. ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 in the concentration of 50 mg/L decreased root and shoot dry weight maximally by 55.2% and 27.5%, 53.5% and 37.5%, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that ZIFs on the root surface gradually collapsed and transformed into nanosheets with increasing cultivation time. The fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labeled ZIFs were applied to trace the uptake and translocation of ZIFs in rice. The results demonstrated that the transformed ZIFs were mainly distributed in the intercellular spaces of rice root, while they cannot be transported to culms and leaves. Even so, the Co and Zn contents of rice roots and shoots in the ZIFs treated groups were increased by 1145% and 1259%, 145% and 259%, respectively, compared with the control groups. These findings suggested that the phytotoxicity of ZIFs are primarily attributed to the transformed ZIFs and to a less extent, the metal ions and their ligands, and they were internalized by rice root and increased the Co and Zn contents of shoots. This study explores a novel bioremediation approach using a continuous upflow fixed bed bioreactor with date pedicels as a biosupport material. Date pedicels offer a dual advantage: providing microbial support and potentially acting as a biostimulant due to their inherent nutrients. This research is divided into two phases: with and without microbial introduction. The bioreactor's efficiency in removing two common textile dyes, RB19 and DR227, was evaluated under various conditions: fixed bed high, the effect of the initial concentration of the pollutant, and recycling the RB19 solution within the bioreactor. Optimization studies revealed an 83% removal yield of RB19 dye with an initial pollutant concentration of 100 mg·L−1 using activated sludge as inoculum. The bioreactor developed its own bacterial consortium without initial inoculation. Microscopic analysis confirmed the presence of a diverse microbial community, including protozoa (Aspidisca and Paramecium), nematodes, and diatoms. The bioreactor exhibited efficient removal of RB19 across a range of initial concentrations (20–100 mg/L) with similar removal efficiencies (around 65%). Interestingly, the removal efficiency for DR227 was concentration-dependent. The bioreactor demonstrated the ability to enhance the biodegradability of treated RB19 solutions. Phytotoxicity tests using watercress and lettuce seeds revealed no negative impacts on plant growth. The swift pace of industrialization, urbanization, and burgeoning populations propel the surge in demand for manufactured goods and infrastructure. The wastewater produced during leather processing comprises a cocktail of organic and inorganic chemical contaminants that have the potential to affect the environment. This study focuses on conducting a comparative physico-chemical, analytical, in vitro, and in silico toxicity assessment and monitoring of leather effluent discharged from two different areas, namely, Dewas and Ranipet. The physicochemical analysis of collected effluents revealed higher levels of biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, and heavy metals than the permissible limit fixed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The X-ray powder diffraction analysis of both samples identified the existence of crystalline and amorphous phases. The functional composition of compounds was identified through the analysis of Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, which revealed the existence of C-H, O–H, N–H, C = O, C=C, and C≡C stretching vibrations. A variety of compound derivatives, including amines, organic acids, organometallic compounds, alcohols, hydrocarbons, esters, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic, and organogermanium, were identified by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. An assessment and monitoring of the phytotoxicity of effluent on the germination of Vigna radiata seeds reveals that (100%) of both Dewas and Ranipet leather effluents inhibited seed germination by 33.34% and 100%. The incorporation of Absorption-Distribution-Metabolism-Excretion-Toxicity (ADMET) analysis improved comprehension of the toxicity profiles of the GC–MS-identified compounds. Moreover, the result of docking studies revealed that cytochrome P450 showed the highest binding affinity towards 1,3-benzodioxol-2-one, hexahydro-cis with an affinity score of − 7.1 kcal/mol. The overall research revealed that the leather effluents from Dewas and Ranipet exhibit significant toxicity, highlighting the necessity of better wastewater management. Sesquiterpene lactones (SLs) are compounds that are highly produced in Cynara cardunculus leaves, known for their phytotoxic activity. This study aims to assess SL-enriched fractions' (cynaropicrin, aguerin B, and grosheimin) phytotoxic potentials and putative modes of action, compared to an initial extract, using two approaches: first, against a panel of nine weed species in pre-emergence, and then on Portulaca oleracea L.'s post-emergency stage. The SL-enriched fractions demonstrated greater phytotoxic activity when compared with the C. cardunculus leaf initial extract. The SL-enriched fractions had higher activity at root growth inhibition over the panel tested, doubling the activity in five of them at 800 ppm. Regarding the post-emergence bioassay, the SL-enriched fractions had a higher influence on the plants' growth inhibition (67% at 800 ppm). The SL-effects on the plants' metabolisms were evidenced. The total chlorophyll content was reduced by 65% at 800 ppm. Oxidative stress induction was observed because of the enhancement in MDA levels at 800 ppm compared to control (52%) and the decrease in SOD-specific activity from 4.20 U/mg protein (400 ppm) to 1.74 U/mg protein (800 ppm). The present investigation highlights the necessity of monitoring some basic physico-chemical water quality indicators and their phytotoxic effect using ecotoxicological bioassays such as "seed germination tests." The phytotoxicity of raw and treated vegetable oil refinery wastewater (VORW) using different treatment processes was assessed through some physiological responses (relative seed germination (RSG), seedling elongation, and germination index (GI)) using Lactuca sativa cultivar. Biotest results of different raw water samples revealed a noticeable correlation between the organic matter content and water phytotoxicity. In fact, VORW showed a very low RSG (17 ± 0.7 to –47 ± 0.58%) and high phytotoxic effects (GI < 50%). The use of coagulation/flocculation (CF) allowed a satisfactory phytotoxicity removal where RSG obtained ranged from 83 ± 1.58 to 90 ± 1.2%. However, the effluent still presents high to moderate phytotoxicity since GI remained below 80% which indicates the presence of toxic elements remaining after CF treatment. When VORW were treated using membrane processes, their phytotoxicity was gradually decreased with the decrease in the membrane pore size. The use of microfiltration membranes (MF), with pore size of 5 µm, 1.2 µm, 0.45 µm, and 0.22 µm, showed RSG values ranged from 37 ± 1.15 to 77 ± 1.68% and GI of less than 80% indicating a moderate to high phytotoxicity. However, the use of ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 100 kDa, 30 kDa, and 10 kDa made it possible to achieve an RSG of 100% and an IG exceeding 80% showing that the VORW-treated using UF does not exhibit any phytotoxicity effect. Hence, UF appears to be the most efficient and environmentally friendly technology that could be used for safely treated VORW irrigation purposes compared to CF and MF processes. In the present study, attention has been paid to the development of economically feasible strategies for enhanced remediation of anthracene and its conversion into biofuels. The strategies developed (B1, B2, B3, and B4) include bagasse and lipid-producing strain Rhodotorula mucilagenosa IIPL32 synthesizing surface active metabolites. The results indicate the highest production of surface-active metabolites in strategies B2, B3, and B4 along with a maximum biodegradation rate. GC–MS analysis affirmed the conversion of anthracene into phthalic acid in all the strategies. Biofuel quality of the lipid produced by the strain showed higher cetane number and improved cold flow property indicating the efficiency of the developed strategies for the production of commercial grade biodiesel. Furthermore, the phytotoxicity study of the spent wash revealed that 50% and 75% diluted spent wash were non-toxic and can be employed for ferti-irrigation. The biodegradation and detoxification potential of two azo disperse dyes and one anthraquinone disperse dye (commonly found in the wastewater effluent of a local textile industry) was investigated by using a consortium of six indigenously isolated bacteria from the wastewater stream in this study. It was found that consortium of bacteria can decolorize disperse red 167.1 dye at concentrations of 50, 150, and 250 mg/L more effectively and the other two dyes, disperse red 54 and disperse blue 60 dyes were decolorized more efficiently by individual bacteria. Bacterial strains namely Bacillus cereus AU50, Bacillus sphaericus, Paenibacillus pocheonensis sp. C-2, Paenochrobactrum glaciei, Bacillus subtilis and Brevibacillus panacihumi were isolated from a local textile industry wastewater stream (effluent) located in Ludhiana, Punjab, India and were used in this study to treat textile industry wastewater containing toxic dyes. The consortium (comprising of these six bacterial isolates) resulted in the maximum rate of decolorization (82.76 ± 0.255%) for disperse red 167.1 dye at three different concentrations within 24 h, with the increase in enzymatic activities whereas Bacillus cereus exhibited maximum rate of decolorization (84.17 ± 0.16%) for disperse red 54 and (76.29 ± 0.51%) for disperse blue 60 in 24 h.In addition, degradation pathways of selected dyes were investigated based on the intermediates identified by GC–MS and followed by phytotoxicity assay. Results of this study show the potential of naturally occurring bacteria in the treatment of wastewater by biodegrading textile dyes in the wastewater streams. The findings of this research will result in developing economically viable bio-filters where bacterial strains can be used to biodegrade textile industry pollutants before this wastewater enters local rivers and streams, and help improve water quality of rivers and aquatic ecology. Waste engine oils are hazardous waste oils originating from the transportation sector and industrial heavy-duty machinery operations. Improper handling, disposal, and miscellaneous misuses cause significant air, soil, sediments, surface water, and groundwater pollution. Occupational exposure by prolonged and repeated contact poses direct or indirect health risks, resulting in short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic) toxicities. Soil pollution causes geotoxicity by disrupting the biocenosis and physicochemical properties of the soil, and phytotoxicity by impairing plant growth, physiology and metabolism. Surface water pollution impacts aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity. Air pollution from incineration causes the release of greenhouse gases creating global warming, noxious gases and particulate matter eliciting pulmonary disorders. The toxicity of waste engine oil is due to the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) composition, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) congeners, organometallic compounds, and toxic chemical additives. The paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the ecotoxicological effects, human and animal health toxicology and exposure to waste engine oils. It highlights the properties and functions of engine oil and describes waste engine oil generation, disposal and recycling. It provides intensive evaluations and descriptions of the toxicokinetics, metabolism, routes of exposure and toxicosis in human and animal studies based on toxicological, epidemiological and experimental studies. It emphasises the preventive measures in occupational exposure and recommends risk-based remediation techniques to mitigate environmental pollution. Irrigation of crops with cyanotoxin-contaminated water poses a significant risk to human health. The direct phytotoxic effects of microcystin-LR (MC-LR), one of the most toxic and prevalent microcystin variants in water bodies, can induce physiological stress and hinder crop development and production. This study investigated the impact of environmentally relevant concentrations of MC-LR (1 to 10 µg L−1) on photosynthetic parameters and antioxidant response of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and arugula (Eruca sativa L.) following irrigation with contaminated water. During the 15-day experiment, lettuce and arugula were exposed to various concentrations of MC-LR, and their photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance, leaf tissue transpiration, and intercellular CO2 concentrations were measured using an infrared gas analyzer. These results suggest that the influence of MC-LR on gas exchange in crops is concentration-dependent, with notable disruptions during exposure and recovery tendency during detoxification. Antioxidant response analysis revealed that glutathione S-transferase (GST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were upregulated during the exposure phase in the presence of MC-LR. However, GST activity decreased during the detoxification phase in both crops, although the effects of the toxin at 10 µg L−1 were still evident in arugula. The internal H2O2 concentration in the crops increased after exposure to MC-LR, showing a time- and concentration-dependent pattern, with an increase during the exposure phase (days 1–7) and a decrease during the detoxification phase (days 8–15). Irrigation of lettuce and arugula with MC-LR-contaminated water affected various aspects of the photosynthetic apparatus and antioxidant responses, which could influence the general health and productivity of exposed crops at environmentally relevant microcystin concentrations. Furthermore, investigation of additional vegetable species and long-term MC-LR exposure can be crucial for understanding the extent of contamination risk, detoxification mechanisms, and other parameters affecting these crops. Resource utilization of tail vegetables has raised increasing concerns in the modern agriculture. However, the effect and related mechanisms of flue-cured tobacco leaves on the product quality, phytotoxicity and bacterially-mediated nitrogen (N) transformation process of tail vegetable composting were poorly understood. Amendments of high-dosed (5% and 10% w/w) tobacco leaves into the compost accelerated the heating process, prolonged the time of thermophilic stage, increased the peak temperature, thereby improving maturity and shortening composting duration. The tobacco leaf amendments at the 10% (w/w) increased the N conservation (TN and NH4-N content) of compost, due to the supply of N-containing nutrient and promotion of organic matter degradation by tobacco leaves. Besides, tobacco leaf amendments promoted the seed germination and root development of wild soybean, exhibiting the feasibility of composting product for promoting the growth of salt-tolerant plants, but no dose-dependent effect was found for tobacco leaf amendments. Addition of high dosed (5% and 10% w/w) tobacco leaves shifted the bacterial community towards lignocellulosic and N-fixing bacteria, contributing to increasing the compost maturity and N retention. PICRUSt 2 functional prediction revealed that N-related bacterial metabolism (i.e., hydroxylamine oxidation and denitrifying process) was enhanced in the tobacco leaf treatments, which contributed to N retention and elevated nutrient quality of composting. To the best knowledge, this was the first study to explore the effect of tobacco waste additives on the nutrient transformation and halophyte growth promotion of organic waste composting. Corn is the second most cultivated crop in Brazil, the number-one country in pesticide consumption. Chemical control of weeds is performed using herbicides such as S-metolachlor with pre- and post-emergence action and thus the toxicity of herbicides constitutes a matter of great concern. The present investigation aimed to examine the effects of an S-metolachlor-based herbicide on Lactuca sativa L. (lettuce) and Zea mays L. (maize) utilizing various bioassays. The test solutions were prepared from commercial products containing the active ingredient. Seeds from the plant models were exposed in petri dishes and maintained under biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) at 24°C. Distilled water was negative and aluminium positive control. Macroscopic analyses (germination and growth) were conducted for both plant species, and microscopic analysis (cell cycle and chromosomal alterations) were performed for L. sativa root tip cells. Detrimental interference of S-metolachlor-based herbicide was noted with lettuce for all parameters tested reducing plant germination by over 50% and the germination speed by over 45% and showing a significant decrease in mitotic index, from 16.25% to 9,28% even on the lowest concentration tested. In maize, there was no significant interference in plant germination; however, speed of germination was significantly hampered, reaching a 51.22% reduction for the highest concentration tested. Ecuadorian cocoa possesses important organoleptic characteristics such as aroma and flavor, called fine and aromatic cocoa. The objective of this study was to evaluate the initial growth responses of young cocoa seedlings to glyphosate in a dose progression in 45 cocoa plants (5 months old), which were transplanted into pots with substrate adjusted to pH 6.0–6.5. Glyphosate doses (0 to 904 g e.e. ha−1) were applied every two weeks, evaluating the impact at 30 and 60 days post-application. Data on shikimate accumulation parameters, chlorophyll content and PSII quantum efficiency were subjected to multivariate analysis using a three-dimensional scatter plot. The results indicated that high concentrations of glyphosate contributed to higher shikimate concentration and lower PSII quantum efficiency. The findings for the variables crop damage, stem height and stem diameter were evaluated by ANOVA. Similarities were reported between the results of the variables height and diameter, and significant differences (p < 0.05) in the variable crop damage for all treatments were also reported. In terms of phytotoxic reaction and growth parameters, the most efficient treatment was DO4, since the seedlings with this dosage showed a low percentage of damage (10%) and the best indices in terms of height and diameter. The least efficient treatment was D15. The control plants (DO1) showed a crop damage of >50% because the absence of control favored weed proliferation. These indications highlight the need to adjust glyphosate doses according to the specific needs of each crop and the development stage of the plant in order to reduce negative effects and maximize potential benefits. Environmental concerns and rising biosurfactant demand emphasize the need for this study. The objective is to maximize rhamnolipid-biosurfactant production by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (SSL-4) utilizing waste engine oil (WEO) as the sole substrate for use in soil bioremediation and commercial production. Using an L16 Taguchi orthogonal array, a signal-to-noise ratio, and an analysis of variance (ANOVA), the effects of environmental (pH, incubation temperature) and dietary parameters (carbon source concentration, carbon/nitrogen (C/N) and carbon/phosphorus (C/P) ratio) are examined. Variations of the following parameters were made within a carefully selected range: incubation temperature of 25–40℃, pH range of 5–11, WEO concentration of 1–7% (v/v), and C/N and C/P ratios of 10–40. Response variables in this batch study include surface tension reduction (mN/m), dry cell biomass (DCBM) (g/L), and rhamnolipids yield based on substrate consumption, YP/S (g/g). Rhamnolipid was synthesized under optimal conditions, providing a yield of 21.42 g/g. The oil recovery of 74.05 ± 1.481% was achieved from oil-contaminated soil at a CMC of ∼70 mg/L. FTIR, 1H NMR, and UPLC-MS techniques were utilized for the characterization of rhamnolipids, and AAS for determining heavy metals concentration in WEO and residual waste engine oil (RWEO). Chitin (Ct) is a crucial biopolymer present in fungi, algae, arthropods, and is usually obtained from crustacean shells. Chitosan (Cs) is a derivative from Ct deacetylation, and possesses numerous uses in various agro-industrial fields. Research on fungal-derived Ct and Cs is mostly focused on pharmaceutical uses, however their uses for plant disease control remain less explored. The main objective of the current study is to evaluate the possibility of using chitosan obtained from mushroom Pleurotus eryngii (Cs-Pe) for controlling some phytopathogens compared to commercial chitosan (C.Cs). This study is focused on the following key areas: (i) extracting Ct from P. eryngii mycelium and converting it to Cs through deacetylation, using both bleaching and non-bleaching methods; (ii) conducting a physico-chemical characterization and in vitro evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of the obtained Cs; (iii) performing an in vivo assessment of the phytotoxic and cytotoxic effects of Cs; and (iv) investigating in vivo the impact of the studied chitosan on fruit quality and its biocontrol efficacy against Monilinia laxa infections in plum fruits. Results showed that Cs-Pe, especially the unbleached one, displayed promising in vitro antimicrobial activity against the majority of tested pathogens. Regarding the cytotoxicity, the highest significant increase in cell abnormality percentage was observed in the case of C.Cs compared to Cs-Pe. In the in vivo study, Cs-Pe acted as a protective barrier, lowering and/or preventing moisture loss and firmness of treated plums. The studied Cs-Pe demonstrated notable efficacy against M. laxa which decreased the fruits' percentage decline. These results strongly suggest that Cs derived from P. eryngii is a potential candidate for increasing plums' shelf-life. Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. spinaciae, causes a significant challenge on vegetative spinach and seed production. Addressing this issue necessitates continuous research focused on innovative treatments and protocols through comprehensive bioassays. Recent studies have highlighted the potential of plant-based compounds in controlling fungal diseases. The present work aims to conduct a series of experiments, encompassing both in vitro and in planta assessments, to investigate the biocontrol capabilities of different essential oils (EOs) at various application rates, with the ultimate goal of reducing the incidence of Fusarium wilt in spinach. The inhibitory effect of four plant EOs (marjoram, thyme, oregano, and tea tree) was initially assessed on the spore germination of five unknown Fusarium strains. The outcomes revealed diverse sensitivities of Fusarium strains to EOs, with thyme exhibiting the broadest inhibition, followed by oregano at the highest concentration (6.66 μL/mL) in most strains. The tested compounds displayed a diverse range of median effective dose (ED50) values (0.69 to 7.53 µL/mL), with thyme and oregano consistently showing lower ED50 values. The direct and indirect inhibitory impact of these compounds on Fusarium mycelial growth ranged from -14% to -100%, wherein thyme and oregano consistently exhibiting the highest effectiveness. Following the results of five distinct inoculation approaches and molecular identification, the highly pathogenic strain F-17536 (F. oxysporum f.sp. spinaciae) was chosen for Fusarium wilt assessment in spinach seedlings, employing two promising EO candidates through seed and soil treatments. Our findings indicate that colonized grain (CG) proved to be a convenient and optimal inoculation method for consistent Fusarium wilt assessment under greenhouse conditions. Seed treatments with thyme and oregano EOs consistently resulted in significantly better disease reduction rates, approximately 54% and 36% respectively, compared to soil treatments (P > 0.05). Notably, thyme, applied at 6.66 µL/mL, exhibited a favorable emergence rate (ERI), exceeding seven, in both treatments, emphasizing its potential for effective disease control in spinach seedlings without inducing phytotoxic effects. This study successfully transitions from in vitro to in planta experiments, highlighting the potential incorporation of EOs into integrated disease management for Fusarium wilt in spinach production. This study focused on the evaluation of the phytotoxic activity of four essential oils (EOs) from the Mediterranean species of Thymus sp. pl., namely Thymus algeriensis Boiss. et Reut., T. ciliatus Desf. subspecies coloratus (Boiss. et Reut.) Batt., T. vulgaris L. ecotype Fasano and T. vulgaris cultivar L. Varico 3, to identify new biomolecules with herbicide potential. The chemical characterization of EOs was performed by GC-MS. The evaluation of the phytotoxicity of the EOs was conducted under in vitro conditions, and the inhibition of germination and seedling growth of Lolium perenne L. and Amaranthus retroflexus L. were assessed. Five concentrations (100, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 µL/100 mL) were considered. Phytochemical analysis revealed a great diversity of compounds. T. algeriensis and T. ciliatus EOs were characterized by the absence of carvacrol and a low content of thymol in T. ciliatus. On the contrary, T. vulgaris ecotype Fasano and T. vulgaris cultivar Varico 3 were characterized by an important content of p-cymene, thymol and carvacrol. All the EOs expressed a potent phytotoxic activity against the tested species. Argemone ochroleuca Sweet is an alien invasive weed dominating most cultivated lands, however, the phytochemicals present in this plant and the effects of these on the germination and growth of economically important crops such as maize are not well-documented. The objective of the study was to characterize the phytochemistry of the shoots and roots of A. ochroleuca and determine whether the extracts could inhibit the germination of maize seeds. The shoots and roots of A. ochroleuca were extracted in water, hexane, and acetone. Ten maize seeds were used in the germination bioassay. A phytochemical analysis was conducted using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The effects of the A. ochroleuca water, hexane, or acetone extracts on maize seed germination were concentration and plant-part dependent. The highest reduction was recorded from the water extract with 82%. Identified compounds with high percentages in A. ochroleuca were 9,12-octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z) and 9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid, (Z,Z,Z)-. The present study indicated that A. ochroleuca extracts suppress the germination of maize seeds, likely due to the presence of both the identified and potentially unidentified phytochemicals that were not detected by the selected method. In the present study, two A. melanocarpa berry extracts were used for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). After the optimization of synthesis, the AgNPs were characterized using UV–Vis, FTIR, EDX, DLS, and STEM analyses. The stability in different media, phytotoxicity, as well as antimicrobial and antioxidant activities were also evaluated. The ideal synthesis conditions were represented by a 3 mM AgNO3 concentration, 1:9 extract:AgNO3 volume ratio, alkaline medium, and stirring at 40 °C for 120 min. The synthesis was confirmed by the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak at 403 nm, and the strong signal at 3 keV from the EDX spectra. FTIR analysis indicated that polyphenols, polysaccharides, and amino acids could be the compounds responsible for synthesis. Stability tests and the negative zeta potential values showed that phytocompounds also play a role in the stabilization and capping of AgNPs. The preliminary phytotoxicity studies on T. aestivum showed that both the extracts and their corresponding AgNPs had an impact on the growth of roots and shoots as well as on the microscopic structure of leaves. The synthesized AgNPs presented antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, and C. albicans. Moreover, considering the results obtained in the lipoxygenase inhibition, the DPPH and hydroxyl scavenging activities, and the ferrous ion chelating assay, AgNPs exhibit promising antioxidant activity. Atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have well-known phytotoxicity on higher plants. However, while numerous bioindication studies have been targeted on how different symptoms indicate the deleterious effects of PAHs in the field, laboratory-scale phytotoxicity tests are much rarer. While ecotoxicity tests might rely on the very same end-points as bioindication studies, they have to comply with quality assurance criteria, repeatability being the most important. As such, proper reporting involves the description of the test compound, experimental design and conditions, test organism used, and end-points measured. The recent review intends to give an overview of studies available in the literature complying with these requirements. PAHs occur in the atmosphere both in gaseous form and bound to particles. As plants are exposed to both phases, test protocols available represent different exposure pathways, fumigation chambers vs. direct foliar treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phytotoxic, genotoxic, cytotoxic and antimicrobial effects of the Mentha arvensis L. essential oil (EO). The biological activity of M. arvensis EO depended on the analyzed variable and the tested oil concentration. Higher concentrations of EO (20 and 30 µg mL−1) showed a moderate inhibitory effect on the germination and growth of seedlings of tested weed species (Bellis perennis, Cyanus segetum, Daucus carota, Leucanthemum vulgare, Matricaria chamomilla, Nepeta cataria, Taraxacum officinale, Trifolium repens and Verbena × hybrida). The results obtained also indicate that the EO of M. arvensis has some genotoxic, cytotoxic and proliferative potential in both plant and human in vitro systems. Similar results were obtained for antimicrobial activity against eight bacteria, including multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains [Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), Escherichia coli, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing (ESBL) E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis], with the effect on multidrug-resistant bacterial strains. Livestock wastewater (LWW) has a complex characteristic of high organic matter content, metals, nutrients, and pharmaceutical compounds. Advanced oxidation processes (AOP) are a potential option for treating this wastewater. This study evaluated real LWW and the performance of UV/H2O2 and UV/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) for its treatment. The experiments were conducted in a UV photoreactor (16 mW/m2, λ = 254 nm). The oxidant agents (Ox) tested were H2O2 and PMS, each at low, medium, and high TOC/Ox molar ratios. A pretreatment based on chemical precipitation was implemented. Annually, the LWW showed total organic carbon (TOC) values of 859 ± 13.37 mg/L, 168.85 ± 1.62 mg/L of total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), and toxicity of 96% v/v. In the dry season, albendazole (ABZ) (95.3 ± 35.16 mg/L), Cu (4.3 ± 0.23 mg/L), Fe (3.8 ± 0.38 mg/L), and suspended solids (SS) (1015 ± 586.9 mg/L) were identified, so pretreatment was implemented. The UV/PMS process with the lowest molar ratio [TOC/Ox 1:0.75] removed significantly lower TOC concentrations (p < 0.05), but toxicity decreased entirely. The study of mineralization and toxicity provided insight into the changes in LWW during treatment with AOP. In this study, the biodegradation of various natural rubber (NR) samples, i.e., neat NR and NR filled with two different curative contents was investigated under a long-term simulated soil condition at a temperature of 25 ± 2 °C in accordance with ISO 17556. Natural clay loam soil, with a pH of 7.2 and a water holding capacity of 57.6%, was employed. Under controlled test condition both unvulcanized and vulcanized NR samples having low curative content, respectively designated as UNRL and VNRL, exhibited similar biodegradation behaviors to the neat NR. They showed fast biodegradation at the early stage, and their biodegradation rate did not significantly change throughout the test period (365 days). However, for the NR samples having high curative content, respectively called UNRH and VNRH for the unvulcanized and vulcanized samples, a biodegradation delay was observed within the first 130 days. Surprisingly, the UNRH showed a relatively high biodegradation rate after the induction period. At the end of the test, most of the rubber samples (the neat NR, UNRL, VNRL, and UNRH) showed a comparable degree of biodegradation, with a value ranging from 54–59%. The VNRH, on the other hand, showed the lowest degree of biodegradation (ca. 28%). The results indicate that the number of curatives does not significantly affect the biodegradability of unvulcanized NR in the long term, despite the fact that a high curative content might retard microorganism activity at the beginning of the biodegradation process. Apparently, crosslink density is one of the key factors governing the biodegradability of NR. The phytotoxicity of the soils after the biodegradation test was also assessed and represented in terms of seedling emergence, survival rate, and plant biomass for Sorghum bicolor. The values of seedling emergence (≥80%), survival rate (100%), and plant biomass of all soil samples were not statistically different from those of the blank soil, indicating the low phytotoxicity of the tested soils subjected to the biodegradation of the rubber samples. Taken as a whole, it can be concluded that the CO2 measurement technique is one of the most effective methods to assess the biodegradability of rubbers. Global exploration of nanoparticles as nano-fertilizers/nano-fungicides to optimize crop production has attracted greater attention. Among metal oxide nano-formulations, the increasing application and discharge of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) into the environment requires urgent attention due to their toxic and stimulatory impact on plants, including vegetables. This study aimed at the bio-fabrication of CuO-NPs from Rosa indica petal extracts and to assess their nanotoxicity on germination and biological and biochemical growth of tomato plants. The morphological characterization of phytofabricated CuO-NPs by microscopic (SEM/TEM) and spectroscopic (XRD/FTIR) techniques revealed its nanostructure, spherical shape ranging in size between 23 and 47 nm exhibiting different functional groups. Furthermore, tomato-CuO-NPs interactions resulted in reduced germination percentage and plant biomass. At the biochemical level, the chlorophyll content decreased consistently, while malonaldehyde and proline content in tomato foliage enhanced substantially with increasing concentrations of CuO-NPs. Size, lycopene content (71 % reduction), and fruit quality (metabolites like sugars, amino acids, and organic acids) assessed by 1H NMR declined after CuO-NPs exposure in a dose-dependent manner. Further in situ experiments revealed deformation in a stomatal aperture in leaves and accumulation of CuO-NPs in roots, suggesting toxicity under SEM. In summation, this study highlights the toxicity of biosynthesized CuO-NPs to tomato plants paving the way to develop novel strategies to mitigate its toxicity to vegetable crops, particularly tomato under real field conditions. Environmental pollutants act as stressors for plants, inducing different stresses like physiological changes, variation in nutritional value, biochemical stress and photosynthetic blockage, and food loss. Phthalate esters are one of the environmental pollutants most commonly used as plasticizers in packaging materials. They leach out into the soil and accumulate in plants via root take-up. The present research work was carried out to check the phytotoxic effect of dibutyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, and di-n-octyl phthalate, their exposure to Malondialdehyde contents, and the consequent impact on the total phenolic content of edible parts of plants. The edible plants tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), lettuce (Lactuca sativa), radish (Raphanus sativus), turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa), spinach (Spinacia oleracea), coriander (Coriandrum sativum), cabbage (Brassica oleracea), cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis), and carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus) were exposed to 0, 10, and 20pbb of all four phthalate esters. After 10 days of exposure, TPC and MDA contents were analyzed spectrophotometrically. The exposure of phthalate esters significantly increased TPC in leaves, and MDA in the root and leaves of plants, except that of DnOP which decreased MDA content in radish leaves. This study was conducted in a greenhouse pot experiment to assess the effects of biochar (BC) or activated carbon (AC) alone or in combination with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) Glomus mosseae or acid-producing bacteria (BA) Bacillus polymyxa on plant growth, EDTA-extractable Cd and Pb, and contents of heavy metals (Cd and Pb) and nutrients (Ca, Mg, K, and P) in maize (Zea mays L.) grown on sewage wastewater contaminated soil. The results showed that most treatments with BC, AC, or its co-application with microbial inoculation led significantly to greater nutrient uptake and promoted growth of maize than non-treated plants. Additionally, the soil additives used decreased the amounts of EDTA-extractable Cd (by 28.7%-100%) and Pb (by 22.8%-94.3%). The applied treatments caused significant decreases in Cd concentrations and the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of Zea mays. The highest shoot Cd reduction was observed for AC (53%), followed by AC+BA (36.9%) > AMF (34.5%) > AC+AMF (28.5) > BA (28.3%) > BC+BA (26.1%) > BC (22.7%). However, more Cd was accumulated in the roots of plants treated with AMF by 63.7% with a lower value of translocation factor (TF) compared to control soil. In contrast, the treatments increased the levels of Pb in the maize plants, and BC coupled with AMF showed the greatest Pb accumulation. It could be concluded that the investigated additives can be applied as immobilizing agents for Cd in the soil but maize plants as phytoextractants for both metals in sewage-contaminated soil are not feasible, as indicated by insufficient phytoextraction efficiency. Natural hematite supported cobalt (Co/Nat-Hem), a new heterogeneous catalyst, was successfully prepared by a simple impregnation technique. Textural, structural, functional groups and morphological aspects of the prepared catalyst were analyzed by BET, XRD, FT-IR, XRF, pHpzc, SEM-EDX methods. BET analysis shows that the Co/Nat-Hem catalyst has a specific surface area of ​​13.44 m2/g and a pore volume of 0.062 cm3/g. The SEM-EDX method showed that 7.19 wt% of the cobalt species were dispersed on the surface of the prepared catalyst. The catalytic activity of Co/Nat-Hem was evaluated by photo-Fenton oxidation of the dye Cong red (CR). The effect of reaction parameters on CR oxidation efficiency was investigated. Under optimal reaction conditions (1 g/L catalyst concentration, 0.2 mol/L H2O2 initial concentration and pH 3), the percentage of CR discoloration reaches 97% after 30 min. The Co/Nat-Hem catalyst achieved a synergistic ratio of 28.5%, which was added to the oxidation rate of the Nat-Hem catalyst. The stability of the Co/Nat-Hem catalyst was demonstrated by the limited activity of leachates in the homogeneous Fenton oxidation of CR. Aluminum (Al) is known to inhibit plant growth and limit crop yields in acid areas. This study aimed to investigate the effect of endophytic fungus Glomerella sp. JP4 infection on the growth, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzyme activities, organic acids contents, and Al content of endophyte-infected rice seedlings (EI) and endophyte-uninfected rice seedlings (EF) exposed to Al stress for 9 days. Al stress decreased shoot height, root length, and dry weight of EF plants. Endophyte infection increased the growth parameters except for root length. Compared to EF plants, the chlorophyll a+b content and carotenoid content were significantly enhanced in the EI plants. Antioxidant enzyme activity was also increased in the EI plants compared to the EF plants subjected to Al stress, while malondialdehyde (MDA) content was remarkably reduced. Endophytic infection significantly increased the contents of citrate and succinate in leaves, as well as that of lactate, malate, fumarate, and succinate in roots under Al stress. Endophyte infection decreased the Al content in the shoots and the roots and restricted the Al transfer from the roots to the shoots in the EI plants compared to the EF plants. Our results indicated that infection with endophytic fungus JP4 in the roots had an active role in promoting plant growth, alleviating the phytotoxic effects caused by Al exposure. S-metolachlor is a selective pre-emergence herbicide used in dryland. However, it is challenging to employ in paddy fields due to its phytotoxic effects on rice. As a common phytohormone, Gibberellin-3 (GA3) is inferred to have the ability to alleviate herbicide phytotoxicity. This study first quantitatively verified the phytotoxicity of s-metolachlor to rice and then demonstrated the mitigative effect of GA3 on these adverse reactions. Furthermore, a transcriptome of rice seedlings subjected to different treatments was constructed to assemble the reference genes, followed by comparative metabolomics and proteomics analyses. Metabolomics revealed an enrichment of flavonoid metabolites in the group of adding GA3, and these flavonoids can eliminate ROS in plants. Proteomics analysis indicated that differential proteins were enriched in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway responsible for the synthesis of flavonoids and that the functions of most differential proteins are associated with peroxidase. The proteome, combined with the transcriptome, revealed that the expressions of proteins and genes was related to the POD activity in the group of adding GA3. It was speculated that the elimination of ROS is key to alleviating the stress of s-metolachlor on rice growth. It was inferred that the mechanism of GA3 in alleviating the phytotoxicity of the substance s-metolachlor is by increasing the activity of the POD and influencing the growth of rice seedlings through the restoration of flavonoid synthesis. In this study, we screened GA3 as a safener to alleviate the phytotoxicity of s-metolachlor on rice. On this basis, the mechanism of alleviating phytotoxicity was studied. The rapid growth of the horticultural industry has increased demand for soilless cultivation substrates. Peat, valued for its physical and chemical properties, is widely used in soilless cultivation. However, peat is non-renewable, and over-extraction poses serious ecological risks. Therefore, sustainable alternatives are urgently needed. Ammonium incubation, a novel method to reduce phytotoxicity, offers the potential for green waste, a significant organic solid waste resource, to substitute peat. This study optimized the ammonium incubation process to reduce green waste phytotoxicity. It systematically examined different nitrogen salts (type and amount) and environmental conditions (temperature, aeration, duration) affecting detoxification efficiency. Results show a significant reduction in phytotoxicity with ammonium bicarbonate, carbonate, and sulfate, especially carbonate, at 1.5%. Optimal conditions were 30 °C for 5 days with regular aeration. Under these conditions, ammonium salt-treated green waste significantly reduced total phenolic content and stabilized germination index (GI) at a non-phytotoxic level (127%). Using treated green waste as a partial peat substitute in lettuce cultivation showed promising results. Mikania micrantha Kunth and Ageratum conyzoides are the most toxic and noxious terrestrial weeds of concern. The present research focuses on the bioconversion of these terrestrial weeds through an optimised biodegradation process: Degradation of feedstock initially in an in-vessel reactor (rotary drum) and further by introducing vermiculture (RDVC). RDVC was optimised to utilise the in-vessel reactor for initial thermophilic degradation of feedstock for 7 days and further vermicomposting using monocultures of Eudrilus eugeniae and Eisenia fetida for 20 days. In contrast with only in-vessel biodegradation, the results of the present study evidence that the significance of dual-stage biodegradation was coherent in the bioconversion of weeds. The vermicompost amended trials had shown greater nutritional value (Total nitrogen in the range of 2.89–3.92%) by the end of 27 days of RDVC. Further, the SGI% was more than 80%, which signifies the soil-safe performance of vermicompost. Among the conducted soil studies with end products, higher growth in Coriandrum sativum was observed in 20% (w/w) vermicompost amended trials. Also, the metal study signifies that the RDVC was coherent in the bioaccumulation of metals during biodegradation. In this study, kitchen waste which is otherwise discarded or allowed to putrefy and pose environmental discomfort is co-composted with biochar to assess the effects of the biochar on the composting of kitchen waste as well as the quality of the final compost. To achieve this, biochar was composted with kitchen waste (w/w) in ratios of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% to determine its effect on composting process and the final compost product compared to cow dung-fortified kitchen waste as a control. Results indicate that pH and EC were not affected by biochar content during composting; however, biochar content had a profound effect on the attainment of thermophilic temperatures during composting, nitrification and other maturity/stability indexes such as germination index (GI), humification index (HI), degree of polymerization (DP) and HA/FA ratio. Wheat, prized for its economic significance, is the predominant crop globally. However, drought stress has emerged as a critical constraint in wheat production, increasingly limiting growth and productivity across major wheat-growing regions worldwide. Therefore, the present study assesses the impact of trace elements silicon, zinc, and manganese on the morphological characteristics of seed germination in spring soft wheat varieties (Taimas, Granny) under both normal and drought stress conditions in 2023. To achieve this, wheat seeds were subjected to varying concentrations of microelements (Si+Zn+Mn) during germination under controlled drought and regular conditions. The most significant beneficial combined effect of the three metals was observed when Si (0.25) + Zn (0.5) + Mn (0.5) was present at a concentration level, resulting in improvements in key germination parameters such as the germination index (GI) and the shoot viability index (SVI). Under drought stress conditions, utilizing the ideal concentrations of trace elements led to a notable increase in germination rates, ranging from 94.07% to 95.23%. The findings indicated that the presence of trace elements resulted in a suppressive impact, which became evident as the concentration of metals increased in the measurements of roots, shoots, and the phytotoxicity index.
