Featured Application: Hearing impairment is not a barrier in the development of an athlete's physical fitness. Inclusion in sports participation and specific tools (i.e., communication aids) appear to be crucial factors in the performance enhancement of deaf and hard-of-hearing athletes. The aim of this systematic review was twofold: to identify the main trends and issues that are being addressed by researchers in the context of physical fitness and sports performance in deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) athletes and to indicate the needs and future directions that should be implemented in the training process of athletes with hearing impairments. The methodology of this systematic review was planned according to PRISMA guidelines. A search of electronic databases (PubMed, EBSCO, Scopus) was conducted to identify all studies on physical fitness, sports performance and participation, and D/HH athletes from 2003 to 2024. In total, 87 full-text articles were assessed to determine eligibility, while 34 studies met the inclusion criteria and were subjected to detailed analysis and assessment of their methodological quality. The presented systematic review indicates evidence that D/HH athletes are characterized by a similar or higher level in selected motor abilities compared to hearing athletes. Moreover, it seems that hearing impairment is not a barrier in the development of an athlete's physical fitness, including aerobic capacity, muscular strength and power or speed of reaction. Purpose: Mining has been carried out in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, since 1592, which has led to severe pollution issues affecting both the environment and human health. To address this, remediation projects have been initiated to restore the soil and its ecosystem services. These efforts involve removing the contaminants and restoring the soil's health and quality. This study aims to assess the biochemical impact of soil remediation carried out in the field, on areas that have been heavily contaminated with heavy metals over a prolonged period. Methods: The enzymatic activity, physiological profile, structure, and microbial diversity were used as bioindicators to assess the remediation of soil and two reference soils. Results: The results indicated that Pb and As decreased, but not at levels indicated by Mexican regulations, Cd concentrations decreased to be below Mexican regulations, the enzymatic activity between the soil with and without remediation did not present significant differences, both with low activity, arylsulfatase was the one with the highest inhibition, and urease the most activated. The evolution of the physiological activity of the microorganisms was greater in the remediated soil. Normal values of evenness and diversity were observed in soils with and without remediation, likewise, the consumption of substrates initially was towards carbohydrates and amines/amides, but in the end, carboxylic acids and polymers were consumed. Conclusion: The remediation process shows positive results; the recovery of soil health is in progress. Background: Martial arts training is beneficial for improving physical fitness but the improvements can vary according to the type of martial art performed. This study investigated lung function, aerobic and anaerobic capacity, flexibility, muscular strength and power among male adolescents who were sedentary or who practiced taekwondo or wushu. Methods: A total of 30 male adolescents living in the Kelantan state in Malaysia who were between 14 years old and 20 years old were enrolled and divided into three groups: i) sedentary (control), ii) taekwondo and iii) wushu. Each participant underwent a lung function test, 20 m shuttle run, Wingate anaerobic test and a Sit and Reach test, as well as tests of standing long jump power, handgrip, back and leg strength. Results: Relative to the sedentary control group, the wushu group had significantly higher values than the sedentary control group for fat free mass (P = 0.047), explosive leg power (P < 0.001), aerobic capacity (P < 0.001), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) (P = 0.021) and Wingate anaerobic capacity (P < 0.05). The taekwondo group also showed significantly greater values than the sedentary control group for explosive leg power (P = 0.018), forced vital capacity (FVC) (P = 0.014) and FEV1 (P < 0.001). The wushu group exhibited significantly higher explosive leg power (P = 0.010) and Wingate anaerobic capacity parameters including mean power (P = 0.001), anaerobic capacity (P < 0.001) and anaerobic power (P = 0.002) than the taekwondo group. Conclusion: Engagement of male adolescents in wushu and taekwondo was associated with improved physiological profiles compared to those who were in the sedentary control group. Canyoning activities require physical effort, highlighting the importance of maintaining a proper physical fitness. Canyoning guides emerge as key figures, not only to ensure safety during the experience but also to handle unforeseen situations promptly. This study aims to assess the physiological profile of canyoning guides and the cardiorespiratory demands experienced during rope activities by means of oxygen uptake and heart rate measurements. Seventeen canyoning guides (42.6 y ± 10.78; BMI of 24.0 kg/m2 ± 2.95) carried out coordinative and conditional tests. The participants showed good values in strength tests (27.3 cm ± 5.97 and 23.3 rep ± 8.06 in SJ and PUp tests, respectively), while the flexibility of males and females was below and well above the average, respectively. A noteworthy result was observed in the reaction test, in which a better performance was recorded with the non-dominant hand (168.1 ms vs. 202.0 ms). All subjects exhibited a low aerobic capacity by means of an RD test (10.6 ua ± 6.62). During rope activities and emergency/support simulations, metabolic and cardiovascular data indicated that a moderate/high effort was exerted, confirmed by an oxidative stress analysis. In conclusion, this study demonstrated how canyoning guides face significant physical requirements, but their physiological profile regarding aerobic power was not appropriate. Aerobic capacity is crucial for the performance of soccer players; however, the relationship between VO2max and the running performance of soccer players with visual impairment is not known. Possibly finding relationships would help in the training process, as training would be more targeted. Additionally, both bodyweight and relative VO2max are factors that affect people's health and wellness. From the literature, it appears that there are no studies that present the normal profile of soccer players with visual impairment. The aims of this study were to (a) determine the differences in VO2max between soccer players and sedentary men with visual impairment; (b) to assess the relationship between the VO2max of players with visual impairment and the distance covered in a soccer match and (c) to describe a profile of physiological parameters and distance running during a soccer match. Six male soccer players with VI and six male sedentary people with VI participated in this study. Anthropometric characteristics (age, height, bodyweight, body fat (BF), body mass index (BMI), cardiorespiratory markers (VO2max, maximum heart rate (HRmax), respiratory exchange ratio (RER)) and the running performance of soccer players during matches were measured, and the VO2max of all the participants was measured in a laboratory. Mann–Whitney U test was used to evaluate differences between sedentary and soccer players' anthropometric characteristics and performance. A correlation analysis by Spearman's' method was used to examine relationships between VO2max and the rest of the physical values during the match. The level of statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. The soccer players' weight was 33% lower, and their BMI was 23% lower than that of sedentary men (p = 0.023, η2 = 0.457 and p = 0.048, η2 = 0.394, respectively). The relative body mass VO2max of the athletes was 42.9% higher in comparison with sedentary men with VI (p = 0.002, η2 = 0.755). No correlations were found between VO2max and match running performance (p = 0.957, r = −0.029) or other parameters during the match in soccer players with VI. In conclusion, relative VO2max is not related to the match running performance of soccer players. The tactics applied by the team, the style of play and the position of the player may affect the distances covered. In the Philippines, the use of non-native earthworm species in vermicomposting is popular. Given that the country is a vital geographical resource for earthworm diversity, the study of earthworm species to establish the potential of their vermicasts in agricultural applications is essential. In this study, the bacteria associated with the vermicasts of the recently described indigenous species, Pheretima losbanosensis, were investigated using next-generation sequencing, community-level physiological profiling, and NPK activity screening. The results showed diverse bacterial species belonging to the phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Gemmatimonadetes, Nitrospirae, Planctomycetes, Spirochaetes, Thermodesulfobacteria, and Verrucomicrobia. Higher diversity and carbon substrate utilization (p < 0.05) of amines and amides, phenolic compounds, polymers, and carboxylic and acetic acids were exhibited by the bacterial communities of P. losbanosensis compared to those of Eudrilus eugeniae. Likewise, bacteria (n = 25) isolated from P. losbanosensis vermicasts had higher nitrogen fixation and phosphate and potassium solubilization activities (p < 0.05) than the bacteria (n = 20) isolated from E. eugeniae vermicasts. Overall, our results indicate that the diverse bacterial communities inhabiting the vermicasts of P. losbanosensis have nutrient mineralization and carbon substrate utilization activities that may have applications in sustainable agriculture as a potential organic input to promote plant growth and improve soil substrate. The influence of high‐pressure homogenisation (HPH) at 100 MPa on Lacticaseibacillus paracasei 90 (L90) was studied in vitro and in situ (fermented milk and cheese). Lysis and injury signs were observed in cells treated with HPH, which were linked to the release of intracellular enzymes and changes in the metabolic activity of L90. HPH treatment led to a higher lactic acid content and lower pH and pyruvic acid levels in fermented milk. The microbiological and peptide profiles of cheeses were modified by using cells or cell‐free extracts of L90. Finally, this study suggests that L90 could release bioactive peptides. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a critical global health challenge, jeopardizing the efficacy of infectious disease treatments and necessitating innovative solutions. The exploration of plants, renowned for their wealth of bioactive compounds, as sustainable sources of antimicrobials is gaining momentum. Sansevieria, a succulent plant genus, boasts ornamental, medicinal, and pollution-remediating attributes owing to its phytochemical richness. Notably, specific species exhibit inherent antimicrobial properties, positioning them as promising reservoirs of alternative antimicrobial agents. Efficient cultivation methods are imperative for the economically viable production of Sansevierias with potential medicinal benefits. In addressing this need, in vitro micropropagation emerges as a strategic solution, enabling mass multiplication and germplasm conservation. Leveraging our previous success in achieving efficient in vitro regeneration of Sansevieria trifasciata through elevated temperatures and auxin supplementation, we present a novel PTC-assisted antimicrobial elicitation platform. This innovative approach resulted in significantly augmented biomass production, heightened concentrations of potent phytochemicals, and increased antibacterial activity in tissue extracts compared to their field-grown counterparts. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) profiling confirmed the upregulation of phytochemicals known for their antibacterial efficacy. Notably, Citronellol, 7,8-Epoxylanostan-11-ol, 3-acetoxy, and several new compounds were markedly elevated in PTC-raised Sansevieria trifasciata. Our study furnishes compelling evidence for the efficacy of in vitro techniques in enhancing the growth and phytochemical profiles of Sansevieria plants. This opens new avenues for their commercial production, particularly in addressing the challenges posed by antimicrobial resistance. Importantly, this study represents the first exploration of phytochemical bioprospecting in the Sansevieria genus through in vitro tissue culture endeavors.

Sodium bicarbonate ingestion before exercise has a performance-enhancing effect on high-intensity exercise. However, gastrointestinal symptoms can be a problematic side-effect. Enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate can attenuate gastrointestinal symptoms following acute bicarbonate loading. In addition, the subsequent effects on exercise performance and metabolomics have not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effect of enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate supplementation on the anaerobic performance, physiological profile, and symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort after severe-intensity intermittent exercise. At the same time, targeted metabolomics was used to study the changes in urine metabolism after ingestion of enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate and to explore the characteristics of biological metabolism. In a randomized crossover design, twelve male college students completed four Wingate anaerobic 30-s cycling tests (WACT) after consuming a placebo (PL) and two experimental conditions: 0.2 g/kg body mass in enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate pills (ES) or general sodium bicarbonate pills (GS). Blood lactate (BLA), heart rate (HR), ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), and gastrointestinal--symptoms assessment questionnaire (GSAQ) were measured pre-exercise and post-exercise. In contrast, mean power (MP) and peak power (PP) were recorded immediately post-exercise. Urine samples were collected before formal tests and 50 min after the third WACT. Our findings indicate the following: 1) mean power and peak power showed no significant difference among conditions (MP: F2.0, 33 =0.541, p =0.587, η²=0.032; PP: F2.0, 33 =0.526, p =0.596, η²=0.031). The PP decline of the ES and GS after the third WACT was lower than that of the PL; 2) There were no significant differences in physiological responses, such as BLA (F2.0, 33.0=0.191, p= 0.827, η2= 0.011) and heart rate (F2, 33 =0.418, p =0.662, η2= 0.025), between the three conditions. Although blood lactate concentration after 10 min of the third WACT was lower with ES and GS than with placebo; 3) Fewer participants experienced gastrointestinal symptoms with enteric-coated than with general sodium bicarbonate; 4) The metabolites with differences among the three conditions 50 min after exercise were 3-phospho- D-glycerate, D-Glucose 6-phosphate, pyruvate, cis-aconitate, oxaloacetate, and citrate. ES had higher levels of 3-phospho-D-glycerate, D-Glucose 6- phosphate, pyruvate, and cis-aconitate than GS. The 3-phospho-D-glycerate, D-Glucose 6-phosphate, pyruvate, and cis-aconitate levels in GS were significantly lower than in PL. In contrast, the citrate level in GS was significantly higher than that in other experimental conditions. Compared to PL, the level of oxaloacetate was higher after exercise in ES. This data suggests that supplementation of enteric-coated and general sodium bicarbonate before exercise can alter energy metabolism following anaerobic exercise, involving the metabolism of 3-phospho-D-glycerate, D-Glucose 6- phosphate, pyruvate, cis-aconitate, oxaloacetate, citrate, and lactate. However, they do not affect anaerobic performance and blood lactate. The supplementation of acute enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate and general sodium bicarbonate can enhance some of the weak effects of blood lactate clearance during anaerobic exercise, which may be beneficial for glycolytic energy supply. In mountain areas, one of the noticeable results of modern climate change is rapid shift of treelines to subalpine and alpine meadows. Such vegetation shifts is associated with a change in quality of the plant residues entering the soils, which in turn can affect the mineralization activity (basal respiration) and functional diversity of the soil microbial community. Therefore, the study was aimed at assessing the soil microbial (basal respiration and functional diversity) and chemical (C, N, C/N, pH) properties (0-10 cm) along the reserved and grazed forest-meadow transects of the Northwestern Caucasus (Karachay-Cherkess Republic), as well as evaluating an effect of vegetation type and land use on variation of these soil properties. It was found that the C and N contents (for both land usees), pH and basal respiration (reserved slope) significantly increase from forest to meadow soils. In contrary, the microbial functional diversity decreased from forest to meadow soils, which might be due to less diverse organic compounds entering the soil only with grass residues than their combination with forest litter. Two-way ANOVA showed that soil microbial functional diversity, pH, C and N along the studied forest-meadow transects was mostly associated with vegetation type (1439 % of the explained variation), and C/N and basal respiration - with land use (3336 % of the explained variation). Thus, a land use change will have a more significant effect on the mineralization activity of soil microbial community than a treeline shifts.

The aim of this research was to study the effects of curcumin administration, injection of PMSG hormone, and the combination of curcumin supplementation and PMSG injection on the physiological parameters and performance of female Muscovy ducks. The objects of this research were 40 young female Muscovy ducks, aged 24 weeks, subjected to treatments: control (P1), curcumin supplementation at a dose of 24 mg/100 g feed (P2), intramuscular injection of PMSG hormone at a dose of 0.015 mL/hen (P3), and the combination of curcumin and PMSG (P4). The results showed that the treatment gave nonsignificant improvements in Muscovy duck performances, including feed consumption, egg production, and the day of laying period and molting period. Treatment gave a significant increase in serum estradiol concentration at molting period after treatment. This study concluded that the treatment provides no significant improvement in the performance of female Muscovy ducks because the genetic diversity of Indonesian ducks remains high.

BackgroundPrevious studies have reported that sodium bicarbonate ingestion may enhance high-intensity exercise performance and cause severe gastrointestinal distress. However, enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate may reduce gastrointestinal symptoms of sodium bicarbonate after oral administration. This remains to be confirmed. This study aimed to verify the effects of serial and acute enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate supplementation on anaerobic performance, physiological profile, and metabolomics in healthy young men.MethodsHealthy young males (n = 12) ingested 0.2 g/kg body mass of enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate (ES) in serial enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate (SES, continuous ES supplementation for 5 days) and acute enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate (AES, acute ES supplementation before exercise) or a placebo (PL) in a randomized crossover design. After each supplement protocol, the participants completed four Wingate anaerobic tests (WAT). The first three Wingate tests (testing anaerobic capacity) were performed with a 5-min passive recovery between each. After the third Wingate test, participants were required to complete a 50-min recovery followed by a fourth WAT test (testing the recovery of anaerobic capacity after 50-min intervals). Blood lactate (BLA), heart rate (HR), and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were measured in all conditions during the test, as was the subjective gastrointestinal–symptoms assessment questionnaire (GSAQ). Mean power (MP) and peak power (PP) were recorded after four WATs. Urine samples were collected before the test and 50 min after the 3rd WAT.ResultsSerial enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate supplementation improved anaerobic capacity in the third bout of WATs, as observed based on an increase in mean power (SES vs. PL (613 ± 57 vs. 542 ± 64 W), P = 0.024) and peak power (SES vs. PL (1,071 ± 149 vs. 905 ± 150 W), P = 0.016). Acute ES supplementation did not affect anaerobic capacity. The occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms after enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate supplementation was minimal and no difference compared to placebo in the current study. In particular, serial enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate supplementation had no gastrointestinal side effects before the test. The AES and SES groups had a trivial effect on blood lactate compared to the PLA group. There was no significant difference in HR and RPE among the three groups. Based on targeted metabolomics analysis, the 50 min after the third WAT, the levels of lactate (P < 0.001), L-Malic acid (P < 0.05), and oxaloacetate (P < 0.05) were significantly higher in the SES group than in the PL group. Compared with the AES group, the levels of lactate and fumarate in the SES group were significantly increased (P < 0.05).ConclusionsOur study indicates that serial enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate supplementation positively improves anaerobic performance among healthy young men. However, acute ingestion of enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate did not improve anaerobic exercise performance. Either with serial or acute supplementation doses, enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate produced fewer gastrointestinal symptoms and no difference compared to placebo, especially with no gastrointestinal side effects after serial supplementation. Serial and acute supplementation of enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate might tend to promote lactate clearance. Furthermore, serial enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate ingestion may cause changes in the metabolism of lactate, L-Malic acid, oxaloacetate, and fumarate 50 min after exercise, which presumably may promote the tricarboxylic acid cycle and lactate clearance.

This research aims to describe and compare the effects of partial-body cryotherapy (PBC) and cold-water immersion (CWI) on the physiological responses of soccer players after cycling in a hot and humid environment. Sixteen elite soccer players participated in three experiments, and received CWI (13°C for 15 min), PBC (110°C−140°C for 3 min), and CON (room temperature: 21°C ± 2°C), respectively, after aerobic and anaerobic cycling in a hot and humid environment (temperature: 35°C–38°C; humidity: 60%–70%). Heart rate (HR), blood lactate (BLa-), perfusion index (PI), oxygen saturation (SaO2), core temperature (Tc), skin temperature (Ts), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were assessed at baseline and through 20 min (5-min intervals). HR was lower in CWI than CON after 20 min (p <.05). SaO2 was higher in CWI than PBC and CON between 10 and 20 min (p <.05). Tc was lower from CWI and PBC than CON between 10 and 20 min (p <.05). Ts was lower in PBC than CWI between 15 and 20 min (p <.05). RPE was lower in PBC than CON 20 min after the exercise (p <.05). No main group differences for BLa- and PI were observed. The physiological effects of PBC are generally similar to CWI. Compared with CON, both CWI and PBC could promote the recovery of physiological indexes within 20 min of exercise in a hot and humid environment. In the present case study, the gut microbiota (GM) profile of a male Elite Mountain Runner (34 years, 171cm, 59 kg, VO2max: 92 mL·min-1 ·kg-1) was analyzed over 5 months competitive period (6 samples). The GM diversity increased through the season coinciding higher levels to the peak performance and shorter and longer race (42 vs. 172 km) produced different phenotypic GM changes. Shorter race promoted the elevation of protective bacteria related to positive benefits (higher production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), lactate resynthesis, mucin degraders). In contrast, longer race promoted an elevation of opportunistic pathogenic bacteria while reducing protective commensal bacteria. The present findings indicate that a higher resilience of the GM after competitions may support rapid recovery from maximal exercise. The GM analyses pre- and post-competition could represent a rapid indicator for the (patho)physiological impact of exercise and provide information on gut health and recovery time needed.

Background: Martial arts training is beneficial for improving physical fitness but the improvements can vary according to the type of martial art performed. This study investigated lung function, aerobic and anaerobic capacity, flexibility, muscular strength and power among male adolescents who were sedentary or who practiced taekwondo or wushu., Methods: A total of 30 male adolescents living in the Kelantan state in Malaysia who were between 14 years old and 20 years old were enrolled and divided into three groups: i) sedentary (control), ii) taekwondo and iii) wushu. Each participant underwent a lung function test, 20 m shuttle run, Wingate anaerobic test and a Sit and Reach test, as well as tests of standing long jump power, handgrip, back and leg strength., Results: Relative to the sedentary control group, the wushu group had significantly higher values than the sedentary control group for fat free mass ( P = 0.047), explosive leg power ( P < 0.001), aerobic capacity ( P < 0.001), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV 1 ) ( P = 0.021) and Wingate anaerobic capacity ( P < 0.05). The taekwondo group also showed significantly greater values than the sedentary control group for explosive leg power ( P = 0.018), forced vital capacity (FVC) ( P = 0.014) and FEV 1 ( P < 0.001). The wushu group exhibited significantly higher explosive leg power ( P = 0.010) and Wingate anaerobic capacity parameters including mean power ( P = 0.001), anaerobic capacity ( P < 0.001) and anaerobic power ( P = 0.002) than the taekwondo group., Conclusion: Engagement of male adolescents in wushu and taekwondo was associated with improved physiological profiles compared to those who were in the sedentary control group. Long-term athlete development is a primary focus for the England Rugby Football Union (RFU). The purpose of this study was to explore the anthropometric, physical, and relative age characteristics of rugby union academy players based on age group and playing position. Seventy-eight participants were examined for height, body mass, 10 and 20 m sprint, countermovement jump, reactive strength index, aerobic capacity, isometric hip extension, dominant handgrip strength, and birth quartile (BQ) across three age categories (i.e., under-16, under-18, and under-21) and two positions (forwards and backs). ANOVA and Kruskall–Wallis analysis were used to examine differences across each age category and position. TukeyHSD and Dunn’s test with Bonferroni correction was used for further post-hoc analysis. BQ distributions were compared against national norms using chi-square analysis. Results revealed that both older forwards (P=0.005) and backs (P=0.002) had significantly greater body mass, maximal aerobic capacity, and power compared to younger players. However, older forwards had slower 10 m sprint times compared to younger forwards. Moreover, relatively older players were significantly overrepresented across all age groups when compared to relatively younger players. Findings suggest that: (a) players should aim to develop greater parameters of body mass and aerobic capacity; (b) forwards should aim to develop acceleration and strength; (c) backs should aim to develop power and quickness; (d) players need to develop anthropometric and physical qualities and differences are apparent by age and position; and, (e) coaches should consider relative age when recruiting and developing young players. Background: In competitive swimming, performance is associated with swimming a certain distance in the shortest possible time. Specifically, in an all-out 200-m front crawl test (T200), the intensity and duration of effort represent a challenge for coaches and swimmers to balance swimming speed with the ability to use different energy sources (aerobic and anaerobic) with lower energy cost (C). In the case of swimmers with physical impairments, physiological parameters are still little explored, and their monitoring may allow a better understanding of performance. Aims: The aim of this study was to assess the total metabolic energetic contribution (Etot) and C of swimmers with physical impairments in a T200. Methods: Eleven swimmers (7 males and 4 females; age: 32.3 ± 12.3 years) with physical impairments performed a T200 with the use of a snorkel and respiratory valve system. Measurements were performed for peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), blood lactate concentration (La), Etot and C. Results: The performance was 210.2 ± 48.1 s (swimming speed 0.99 ± 0.14im·s−1). The aerobic, anaerobic lactic and anaerobic alactic contributions were 70.1%, 17.1% and 12.8%, respectively. C was 1.22 ± 0.52 kJ m−1. Conclusions: Swimmers with physical impairment of different sport classes presented, predominately, high aerobic metabolism contribution to the Etot and different values of C, with a certain tendency of C being lower in those faster swimmers than in slower swimmers. Purpose: In this case study, a world-class rower was followed over a period of 15 y in which he evolved from junior to professional athlete. Methods: An incremental exercise test and a 2000-m ergometer test were performed each year in the peak period of die season starting at the age of 16 y. In addition, the training logs ot l y each as a junior and a senior rower were recorded and analyzed. Results: Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), maximal power output (Pmax), and power output at 4 mmol/L blood lactate concentration increased until the age of 27 and then stabilized at 30 y at 6.0 ± 0.2 L/min, 536 ± 15 W, and 404 ± 22 W, respectively. At the age of 27-28 y the rower also had a career-best 2000-m ergometer test (5'58") and on-water performance with a 4th place at the Olympic Games (2008) in Beijing and World Championships (2009). At the age of 23 y, the rower trained a total of 609I km in 48 wk. Ot the total training time, 15.4% consisted of general training practices, 23.4% resistance training, and 61.2% specific rowing training. Conclusion: The on-water performance in the World Championships and Olympic Games corresponded closely to the evolution in the rower’s physiological profile and 2000-m ergometer performance. The long-term build-up program resulted in an increase in the physiological parameters up to the age of 27 y and resulted in a 4th position at the 2008 Olympic Games at a body mass of only 86 kg. The purpose of this study was to assess the maximum oxygen uptake (V̇O2max), the total metabolic energy expenditure (), and the energy cost (C) measured as the speed of V̇O2max in swimmers with physical impairments. Eleven swimmers performed an Nx200-m front crawl test from a low to all-out speed and data were obtained at maximum aerobic power. The oxygen uptake was measured breath-by-breath by a telemetric gas exchange system. The was calculated from the aerobic and anaerobic pathways at maximal intensity. The C was obtained by the ratio of the and the mean swimming speed. The V̇O2max was 38.2 ± 8.3 mL.kg.min−1, the was 191.9 ± 51.7 kJ, and the C was 0.8 ± 0.2 kJ.m−1. The energy contribution of the aerobic pathway was higher (p < 0.001) than that of both the anaerobic pathways, which were similar (p > 0.05). There was no gender effect on the results of the energy contributions (p > 0.05). The anaerobic lactic pathway contribution was higher in male than in female swimmers (p < 0.05). The aims of the present study were to investigate the relationship of aerobic and anaerobic parameters with 400 m performance, and establish which variable better explains long distance performance in swimming. Twenty-two swimmers (19.1±1.5 years, height 173.9±10.0 cm, body mass 7l.2±10.2 kg; 76.6±5.3% of 400 m world record) underwent a lactate minimum test to determine lactate minimum speed (LMS) (i.e., aerobic capacity index). Background: This study aimed to determine the differences in physiological profiles and bone health status of Malay adolescent male state boxing, Muay Thai and silat athletes.Methods: Forty participants with mean age 16.7 ± 1.5 years participated in this study. They were divided into four groups, i.e., sedentary control, boxing, Muay Thai and silat groups with 10 participants per group. Participants’ lung capacity, estimated maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), Wingate anaerobic capacity, isokinetic muscular peak torque (strength) and power, hand-grip strength, back and leg strength, explosive power, agility, static balance and flexibility were measured. Bone sonometer was used to measure tibial and radial bone speed of sound (SOS). The research approach employed was purposive method and the duration for completing data collection was 3 months.Results: The result of the present study showed that boxing athletes exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) greater arm isokinetic muscular strength and power than silat athletes, and greater arm isokinetic muscular power than Muay Thai athletes respectively. Boxing athletes also showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher estimated VO2max compared to silat athletes. Muay Thai athletes exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) greater radial bone SOS value compared to sedentary controls.Conclusions: The Malay male adolescent boxing athletes had greater arm isokinetic muscular performance than their silat and Muay Thai counterparts. Boxing athletes also showed better aerobic fitness compared to silat athletes. In addition, Muay Thai athletes had better bone health status than sedentary individuals. This study provides new scientific information on physiological profiles and bone health status of Malay adolescent male state boxing, Muay Thai and silat athletes in the field of martial arts. Falls play a critical role in older people’s life as it is an important source of morbidity and mortality in elders. In this article, elders fall risk is predicted based on a physiological profile approach using a multilayer neural network with back-propagation learning algorithm. The personal physiological profile of 200 elders was collected through a questionnaire and used as the experimental data for learning and testing the neural network. The profile contains a series of simple factors putting elders at risk for falls such as vision abilities, muscle forces, and some other daily activities and grouped into two sets: psychological factors and public factors. The experimental data were investigated to select factors with high impact using principal component analysis. The experimental results show an accuracy of ≈90 percent and ≈87.5 percent for fall prediction among the psychological and public factors, respectively. Furthermore, combining these two datasets yield an accuracy of ≈91 percent that is better than the accuracy of single datasets. The proposed method suggests a set of valid and reliable measurements that can be employed in a range of health care systems and physical therapy to distinguish people who are at risk for falls. Purpose: Badminton is characterized by bouts of high intensity interspersed by short recovery periods. Aerobic assessment via indirect calorimetry is impractical on court because of the encumbrance of portable metabolic devices. When the relationship between heart rate (HR) and pulmonary oxygen uptake [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] is linear, HR monitoring can provide an indirect estimation of metabolic demands on court. However, owing to the intermittent nature of badminton, the [Formula: see text] relationship will differ from that obtained in the laboratory, making its use on court questionable. The aims of this study were to (i) assess cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses during on-court badminton rally simulations at different intensities and (ii) compare [Formula: see text] relationships obtained from laboratory and on-court measurements.Methods: The study sample was seven professional badminton players (age 16.9 ± 2.1 years; body mass 62.8 ± 9.2 kg; stature 1.71 ± 0.09 m). [Formula: see text] HR, and other respiratory and metabolic parameters were assessed in the laboratory with an incremental intermittent Astrand-type test (IIAT) and on court during rally simulations at three different intensities.Results: Cardiorespiratory parameters measured during the rallies reached 95% of maximal IIAT values. The [Formula: see text] slope and intercept differed in the on-court and the IIAT conditions (P = 0.012 and P = 0.008, respectively).Conclusions: The difference in [Formula: see text] regression lines between the IIAT and the on-court condition indicates that HR monitoring may not provide accurate data on the aerobic demands of specific on-court badminton tasks. Calcium (Ca) is an essential macronutrient for plants and its homeostasis is basic for many processes in plants. Therefore, both Ca deficiency and toxicity constitute potential issues for crops. CAX1 transporter is a potential target to obtain plants with better Ca homeostasis and higher Ca concentration in edible parts. Three Brassica rapa mutants for CAX1 were obtained through TILLING. The objective of this work is to evaluate the growth, physiological state and nutrients concentration of these mutants grown with different Ca doses. The mutants and the parental line were grown under low, control and high Ca doses and parameters related to their oxidative stress, photosynthetic performance and nutrients concentration were determined. BraA.cax1a-4 and BraA.cax1a-7 mutants presented lower total Chl, an altered photosynthesis performance and higher ROS levels. BraA.cax1a-12 mutant grew better under high Ca conditions. All mutants accumulated more Ca and Mg in leaves under control and high Ca doses and accumulated more Fe regardless the Ca dose. The results obtained point to BraA.cax1a-12 as a potential candidate for biofortification with Fe, Ca and Mg since it accumulate higher concentrations of these elements, do not present an altered growth and is able to tolerate higher Ca doses. The objective of this review is to integrate clinical findings and laboratory analyses in such a way to improve the welfare of newborn piglets and achieve better prognoses of neonatal viability. Deaths during the intrapartum period account for a significant proportion of pre-weaning mortality in farms worldwide. Piglets which die during parturition generally have normal size and typically lack gross lesions at post-mortem examination. However, circulatory abnormalities in the umbilical cord help in assessing piglet viability. Cord lesions can be classified as normal (adhered), oedematous, congested or haemorrhagic and should always be evaluated in perinatal deaths. The likelihood of neonatal survival decreases rapidly as the severity of umbilical cord lesions increase. The physiometabolic blood profile which includes acid-base balance, degree of dehydration, mineral balance, metabolic expenditure and gas exchange are also useful clinical elements for properly assessing neonatal viability. Neonatal survival is notably reduced when the blood pH falls below 7.0, lactate rises above 90 mg/dl, bicarbonate drops below 10 mmol/l, or the pCO2 increases above 110 mm/Hg. Blood calcium is also an excellent indicator of neonatal stress when used in combination with the other parameters mentioned above. Trembling due to an imbalance in the movement of calcium in muscle is also a factor involved in neonatal mortality. Neurological function in the newborn piglet could also be evaluated by adapting the Apgar score widely used in human perinatology. Neonates with scores lower than 6 in a 10 point scale have generally lower survival rates. The two most important indicators for this vitality score are breathing latency and bradycardia. If the neonate has apnoea for more than 5 min and the cardiac frequency does not increase to more than 110 beats per minute the prognosis for survival is rather poor.

Landfills are always the most important part of solid waste management and bear diverse metabolic activities involved in element biogeochemical cycling. There is an increasing interest in understanding the microbial community and activities in landfill cover soils. To improve our knowledge of landfill ecosystems, we determined the microbial physiological profiles and communities in three landfill cover soils (Ninghai: NH, Xiangshan: XS, and Fenghua: FH) of different ages using the MicroResp, phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA), and high-throughput sequencing techniques. Both total PLFAs and glucose-induced respiration suggested more active microorganisms occurred in intermediate cover soils. Microorganisms in all landfill cover soils favored l-malic acid, ketoglutarate, and citric acid. Gram-negative bacterial PLFAs predominated in all samples with the representation of 16:1ω7, 18:1ω7, and cy19:0 in XS and NH sites. Proteobacteria dominated soil microbial phyla across different sites, soil layers, and season samples. Canonical correspondence analysis showed soil pH, dissolved organic C (DOC), As, and total nitrogen (TN) contents significantly influenced the microbial community but TN affected the microbial physiological activities in both summer and winter landfill cover soils. The study aimed to investigate the differences in the effects of 7-month training on aerobic and anaerobic capacity in tandem cycling athletes with and without visual impairment. In this study, Polish elite (n=13) and sub-elite (n=13) visually impaired (VI) (n=13; 40.8 ±12.8 years) and properly sighted (PS) (n=13; 36.7 ±12.2 years) tandem-cycling athletes participated voluntarily in 7-month routine training. The following pre-/post-training measurements were conducted on separate days: maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was estimated with age correction using the Physical Working Capacity test on a bicycle ergometer according to the Astrand-Ryhming method. Maximal power output (Pmax) was evaluated using the Quebec test on a bicycle ergometer. At baseline, VO2max (47.8 ±14.1 vs 42.0 ±8.3 ml/kg/min, respectively) and Pmax (11.5 ±1.5 vs 11.5 ±1.0 W/kg) did not differ significantly between PS and VI cyclists. However, differences in aerobic capacity were considered as clinically significant. Two-way ANOVA revealed that after 7 month training, there were statistically significant increases in VO2max (p=0.003) and Pmax (p=0.009) among VI (VO2max, +9.1%; Pmax, +6.3%) and PS (VO2max, +9.1%; Pmax, +11.7%) cyclists, however, no time x visual impairment interaction effect was found (VO2max, p=0.467; Pmax, p=0.364). After training, VO2max (p=0.03), but not Pmax (p=0.13), was significantly greater in elite compared to sub-elite tandem cyclists. VI and PS tandem cyclists showed similar rates of improvement in VO2max and Pmax after 7-month training. VO2max was a significant determinant of success in tandem cycling. The Pearson correlation test and backward multiple regression analysis were used to verify the possible correlations between the physiological indices (predictor factors) and S400m (independent variable) (p<0.05). Values are presented as mean ± standard deviation. Significant correlations were observed between S400m (1.4±0.1 m.s-1) and LMS (1.3±0.1 m.s-1; r=0.80), ⋅ VO2PEAK (4.5±3.9 L⋅min-1; r=0.72) and CANA (4.7±1.5 L⋅O2; r= 0.44). The best model constructed using multiple regression analysis demonstrated that LMS and...O2PEAK explained 85% of the 400 m performance variance. When backward multiple regression analysis was performed, CANA lost significance. Sodium bicarbonate ingestion before exercise has a performance-enhancing effect on high-intensity exercise. However, gastrointestinal symptoms can be a problematic side-effect. Enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate can attenuate gastrointestinal symptoms following acute bicarbonate loading. In addition, the subsequent effects on exercise performance and metabolomics have not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effect of enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate supplementation on the anaerobic performance, physiological profile, and symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort after severe-intensity intermittent exercise. At the same time, targeted metabolomics was used to study the changes in urine metabolism after ingestion of enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate and to explore the characteristics of biological metabolism. In a randomized crossover design, twelve male college students completed four Wingate anaerobic 30-s cycling tests (WACT) after consuming a placebo (PL) and two experimental conditions: 0.2 g/kg body mass in enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate pills (ES) or general sodium bicarbonate pills (GS). Blood lactate (BLA), heart rate (HR), ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), and gastrointestinal-symptoms assessment questionnaire (GSAQ) were measured pre-exercise and post-exercise. In contrast, mean power (MP) and peak power (PP) were recorded immediately post-exercise. Urine samples were collected before formal tests and 50 min after the third WACT. Our findings indicate the following: 1) mean power and peak power showed no significant difference among conditions (MP: F 2.0, 33  = 0.541, p  = 0.587, η 2  = 0.032; PP: F 2.0, 33  = 0.526, p  = 0.596, η 2  = 0.031). The PP decline of the ES and GS after the third WACT was lower than that of the PL; 2) There were no significant differences in physiological responses, such as BLA (F 2.0, 33.0  = 0.191, p  = 0.827, η 2  = 0.011) and heart rate (F 2, 33  = 0.418, p  = 0.662, η 2  = 0.025), between the three conditions. Although blood lactate concentration after 10 min of the third WACT was lower with ES and GS than with placebo; 3) Fewer participants experienced gastrointestinal symptoms with enteric-coated than with general sodium bicarbonate; 4) The metabolites with differences among the three conditions 50 min after exercise were 3-phospho-d-glycerate, d-Glucose 6-phosphate, pyruvate, cis-aconitate, oxaloacetate, and citrate. ES had higher levels of 3-phospho-d-glycerate, d-Glucose 6-phosphate, pyruvate, and cis-aconitate than GS. The 3-phospho-d-glycerate, d-Glucose 6-phosphate, pyruvate, and cis-aconitate levels in GS were significantly lower than in PL. In contrast, the citrate level in GS was significantly higher than that in other experimental conditions. Compared to PL, the level of oxaloacetate was higher after exercise in ES. This data suggests that supplementation of enteric-coated and general sodium bicarbonate before exercise can alter energy metabolism following anaerobic exercise, involving the metabolism of 3-phospho-d-glycerate, D-Glucose 6-phosphate, pyruvate, cis-aconitate, oxaloacetate, citrate, and lactate. However, they do not affect anaerobic performance and blood lactate. The supplementation of acute enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate and general sodium bicarbonate can enhance some of the weak effects of blood lactate clearance during anaerobic exercise, which may be beneficial for glycolytic energy supply. The present study aimed to describe heart rate (HR) responses during a simulated Olympic boxing match and examine physiological parameters of boxing athletes. Ten highly trained Olympic boxing athletes (six men and four women) performed a maximal graded exercise test on a motorized treadmill to determine maximal oxygen uptake (52.2 mL · kg-1 · min-1 ± 7.2 mL · kg-1 · min-1) and ventilatory thresholds 1 and 2. Ventilatory thresholds 1 and 2 were used to classify the intensity of exercise based on respective HR during a boxing match. In addition, oxygen uptake (V.O2) was estimated during the match based on the HR response and the HR-V.O2 relationship obtained from a maximal graded exercise test for each participant. On a separate day, participants performed a boxing match lasting three rounds, 2 minutes each, with a 1-minute recovery period between each round, during which HR was measured. In this context, HR and V.O2 were above ventilatory threshold 2 during 219.8 seconds ± 67.4 seconds. There was an increase in HR and V.O2 as a function of round (round 3 < round 2 < round 1, P < 0.0001).These findings may direct individual training programs for boxing practitioners and other athletes. Background: Previous studies have reported that sodium bicarbonate ingestion may enhance high-intensity exercise performance and cause severe gastrointestinal distress. However, enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate may reduce gastrointestinal symptoms of sodium bicarbonate after oral administration. This remains to be confirmed. This study aimed to verify the effects of serial and acute enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate supplementation on anaerobic performance, physiological profile, and metabolomics in healthy young men., Methods: Healthy young males ( n = 12) ingested 0.2 g/kg body mass of enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate (ES) in serial enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate (SES, continuous ES supplementation for 5 days) and acute enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate (AES, acute ES supplementation before exercise) or a placebo (PL) in a randomized crossover design. After each supplement protocol, the participants completed four Wingate anaerobic tests (WAT). The first three Wingate tests (testing anaerobic capacity) were performed with a 5-min passive recovery between each. After the third Wingate test, participants were required to complete a 50-min recovery followed by a fourth WAT test (testing the recovery of anaerobic capacity after 50-min intervals). Blood lactate (BLA), heart rate (HR), and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were measured in all conditions during the test, as was the subjective gastrointestinal-symptoms assessment questionnaire (GSAQ). Mean power (MP) and peak power (PP) were recorded after four WATs. Urine samples were collected before the test and 50 min after the 3rd WAT., Results: Serial enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate supplementation improved anaerobic capacity in the third bout of WATs, as observed based on an increase in mean power (SES vs. PL (613 ± 57 vs. 542 ± 64 W), P = 0.024) and peak power (SES vs. PL (1,071 ± 149 vs. 905 ± 150 W), P = 0.016). Acute ES supplementation did not affect anaerobic capacity. The occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms after enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate supplementation was minimal and no difference compared to placebo in the current study. In particular, serial enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate supplementation had no gastrointestinal side effects before the test. The AES and SES groups had a trivial effect on blood lactate compared to the PLA group. There was no significant difference in HR and RPE among the three groups. Based on targeted metabolomics analysis, the 50 min after the third WAT, the levels of lactate ( P < 0.001), L-Malic acid ( P < 0.05), and oxaloacetate ( P < 0.05) were significantly higher in the SES group than in the PL group. Compared with the AES group, the levels of lactate and fumarate in the SES group were significantly increased ( P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Our study indicates that serial enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate supplementation positively improves anaerobic performance among healthy young men. However, acute ingestion of enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate did not improve anaerobic exercise performance. Either with serial or acute supplementation doses, enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate produced fewer gastrointestinal symptoms and no difference compared to placebo, especially with no gastrointestinal side effects after serial supplementation. Serial and acute supplementation of enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate might tend to promote lactate clearance. The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare the body composition and the cardiorespiratory performance as well as to examine the isokinetic muscle strength of the lower extremities and the vertical jump performance in professional, semi-professional and amateur Greek soccer players of the same club. Subjects formed three groups: professionals, U-21 and U-17. All subjects underwent anthropometric measurements, body fat assessment and performed a maximal exercise test on treadmill to determine VO2max. Jumping ability was measured with two different tests and muscle strength of the quadriceps and hamstrings was examined at three angular velocities. The absolute values of VO2max (ml/min) were higher in professionals compared to U-21 and U-17 (p<0.05, p<0.001) while the relative values (ml/kg/min) did not differ between groups. Professionals presented significantly higher values in SJ and CMJ compared to U-21 by 11.3% and 10.5% and U-17 by 10.5% and 9.4%, respectively (p<0.001 and p<0.01). Professionals and U-21 demonstrated higher peak torque values at all angular velocities of knee flexors and extensors compared to U-17 (p<0.05, p<0.001). Conclusively, the professionals obtained higher values in muscle strength and jumping ability. These findings can be attributed to age, training experience, and specific strength training program. Moreover, the cardiorespiratory performance and body composition may be improved if the specific training program is followed by a balanced diet too. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on research conducted to investigate the physical and physiological profile of elite Belgian soccer players according to the players' position. Researchers evaluated 289 players. They found that strikers had significantly shorter sprinting times compared with the midfielders, center backs, and goalkeepers, that the full backs were faster than the goalkeepers and that the center backs and the goalkeepers displayed higher jumping heights.

The objective of this review is to integrate clinical findings and laboratory analyses in such a way to improve the welfare of newborn piglets and achieve better prognoses of neonatal viability. Deaths during the intrapartum period account for a significant proportion of pre-weaning mortality in farms worldwide. Piglets which die during parturition generally have normal size and typically lack gross lesions at post-mortem examination. However, circulatory abnormalities in the umbilical cord help in assessing piglet viability. Cord lesions can be classified as normal (adhered), oedematous, congested or haemorrhagic and should always be evaluated in perinatal deaths. The likelihood of neonatal survival decreases rapidly as the severity of umbilical cord lesions increase. The physiometabolic blood profile which includes acid-base balance, degree of dehydration, mineral balance, metabolic expenditure and gas exchange are also useful clinical elements for properly assessing neonatal viability. Neonatal survival is notably reduced when the blood pH falls below 7.0, lactate rises above 90 mg/dl, bicarbonate drops below 10 mmol/l, or the pCO2 increases above 110 mm/Hg. Blood calcium is also an excellent indicator of neonatal stress when used in combination with the other parameters mentioned above. Trembling due to an imbalance in the movement of calcium in muscle is also a factor involved in neonatal mortality. Neurological function in the newborn piglet could also be evaluated by adapting the Apgar score widely used in human perinatology. Neonates with scores lower than 6 in a 10 point scale have generally lower survival rates. The two most important indicators for this vitality score are breathing latency and bradycardia. If the neonate has apnoea for more than 5 min and the cardiac frequency does not increase to more than 110 beats per minute the prognosis for survival is rather poor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Patagonian Lakes have particular environmental conditions with or without intermittent disturbances. The study of the microorganisms present in aquatic ecosystems has increased notably because they can be used as micro-scale bioindicators of, among others, anthropogenic pollution and climatic change. The aim of the work was to compare the composition of the bacterial communities associated with sediments of three Patagonian Lakes with different geomorphologic patterns and disturbances. The lake sediments were characterized by molecular techniques, physiology profiles and physico-chemical analyses. The metabolic and physiological profiles of the microbial community demonstrated that non-impacted Tranquilo Lake is statistically different to impacted Bertrand and Plomo Lakes. Similar results were detected by DGGE profiles. FISH results demonstrated that betaproteobacteria showed the highest count in the Tranquilo Lake while gammaproteobacteria showed the highest counts in the Bertrand and Plomo Lakes, indicating that their sediments are highly dystrophic. The results demonstrate differences in the metabolic activity and structural and functional composition of bacterial communities of the studied lakes, which have different geomorphological patterns due to disturbances such as volcanic activity and the climatic change.
