This study sought to understand the lived experiences of wheelchair basketball athletes from low- and middle-income countries of recent or current armed conflict and the meaning that they ascribed to their participation. Wheelchair basketball athletes (N = 108) from eight national teams participated in semistructured focus-group interviews. Study data were analyzed thematically using an interpretive descriptive approach. Three themes were developed: "I can do anything I want; not only basketball," self-concept changes through sport participation; "Now they see me as a respectable person," societal belonging through sport; and "I have motivated other disabled people," influence on nonparticipating disabled persons. The findings indicated that participation in wheelchair sports may help disabled persons see themselves as capable individuals on the court and in aspects of daily living, perhaps even peer role models for other disabled persons in their communities and countries. Background: Although physical activity (PA) is an important determinant of health, physically disabled individuals tend to have a sedentary lifestyle. The Barriers to Physical Activity Questionnaire for People with Mobility Impairments (BPAQ-MI) is a self-report instrument evaluating PA barriers. This study was intended to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Persian version of BPAQ-MI (P-BPAQ-MI) and to report the prevalence and severity of PA barriers among Persian-speaking individuals. Methods: The translation and back translation of the BPAQ-MI was conducted according to an internationally accepted guideline and tested on 163 participants to assess its reliability and validity. Internal consistency and test–retest reliability were analyzed using Cronbach alpha and Spearman correlation coefficient. Convergent construct validity was established by comparing the scores of P-BPAQ-MI and The Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire. Known-groups construct validity was assessed with regard to type of assistive device and sex of the individual. Prevalence and severity of the barriers were reported by computing the percentage and means of "yes" answers. Results: The P-BPAQ-MI domains demonstrated very good internal consistency (Cronbach alpha of.77–.95) and excellent test–retest reliability (Spearman rho of.73–.96) with a significant inverse small correlation with Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire indexes. The P-BPAQ-MI successfully discriminated between individuals with different assistive devices and sex. Community Built Environment barriers were the most prevalent and severe. Conclusions: The P-BPAQ-MI is a valid and reliable instrument to assess the PA barriers of people with physical disability. The community barriers were the most frequently reported obstacles to PA. Assistance dogs are highly trained animals to support individuals with disabilities and medical conditions. Evidence suggests the support provided by an assistance dog can extend beyond physical assistance to therapeutic and communicative domains. However, there is limited research exploring the lived experience of assistance dog placements in the United Kingdom (UK) over an extended period of time. This longitudinal service evaluation was designed to evaluate the placement of assistance dogs, trained by the charity Dogs for Good, with adults and children with autism or a physical disability in the UK. Goals and expectations of being matched with an assistance dog prior to placement, and perceptions of how these dogs have impacted the quality of life of adults and children with autism and/or a physical disability and their families were assessed. Service users who had applied for an assistance dog via the Dogs for Good charity (n = 307) were contacted and invited to complete questionnaires at five different time points (pre-dog placement, and 6-, 12-, 24-, and 36-months post dog-placement). Repeated-measures ANOVAs were conducted to determine if there were significant changes to quality of life over time. Mean quality of life scores improved significantly for all service users. Responses to free-text questions were thematically analysed, and three main themes were identified from the free-text responses: goals and expectations for assistance dog pre-placement (e.g., enhancing independence, physical functioning and wellbeing), the positive impact of the assistance dog post-placement (e.g., promoting independence, development of the human-animal bond, improving wider family dynamics, and reducing stigma), and satisfaction with the service. The findings complement and extend previous insights into the impact of assistance dogs on people with autism or a physical disability. They also highlight some challenges associated with the placement of assistance dogs and indicate the need to consider the development of further targeted support strategies.

More often than not, students with physical disabilities are not provided equitable access to recreational sport programs or clubs, even though they often pay the same fees as their peers without disabilities. Involvement in recreational sports is a large component of the college campus experiences, yet those living with disability are likely to experience a variety of challenges associated with participation, which may inhibit them from fully engaging in sports with their peers and pursuing an active lifestyle. To examine the impact of involvement in an inclusive adaptive sport program on the college experience, a qualitative phenomenological approach was implemented with a convenience sample of 8 college students currently participating in a CTRS-driven inclusive wheelchair basketball program. A semi-structured interview procedure was utilized to elicit the participants' experiences of involvement in the adaptive sports program. Of 8 college students, five were individuals without, and 3 were individuals with an identified physical disability. The adaptive sports program had a positive impact on both groups of students. Four themes and 10 subthemes emerged from the data analysis. Background: With increasing focus on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in chronic rheumatic diseases, we aimed to evaluate the self-reported physical and psychosocial health in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) compared to matched population-based controls. Furthermore, we aimed to study the association of patient- and physician-reported outcome measures in JIA with patient-reported physical disability. Methods: We used data from a Norwegian JIA cohort study (NorJIA), including clinical characteristics and outcome measures in participants with JIA and sex- and age-matched population-based controls. Self-reported physical and psychosocial health were assessed using the generic Child Health Questionnaire (CHQ). Comparisons between children with JIA and controls were performed by test of proportions for categorical variables and t-test for continuous variables. To evaluate the association of patient- and physician-reported outcome measures with patient-reported physical disability, assessed with the Child Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ) in children with JIA, we used logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: In total, 221 participants with JIA (59.3% females, median age 12.7 years) and 207 controls with available data were included. In the JIA group, 24.3% scored below the norm for physical health (CHQ PhS < 40) and 8.7% scored below the norm for psychosocial health (CHQ PsS < 40). The corresponding numbers for the control group were 0.5% and 1.9%, respectively. In the JIA group, 57.9% reported physical disability (CHAQ > 0). Several patient-reported outcome measures, such as poor physical health (CHQ PhS < 40), disease-related pain, and the patient's global assessment of disease impact on wellbeing, were strongly associated with self-reported physical disability (CHAQ > 0), adjusted OR 19.0 (95% CI 5.6, 64.1), 14.1 (95% CI 6.8, 29.2), and 14.0 (95% CI 6.2, 31.6), respectively. Associations were also found for active disease according to Wallace (adjusted OR 36.3, 95% CI 10.3, 128.1), and physician-reported global assessment of disease activity (adjusted OR 6.2, 95% CI 3.1, 12.6). Conclusions: The strong association between patient- and physician-reported outcome measures and patient-reported physical disability strengthens the importance of including the patient's voice in a comprehensive evaluation of patient outcome in JIA. Background: Although motherhood plays a meaningful role in the formation of a woman's identity, most studies have focused on the process of identity transformation in the transition to motherhood among non-disabled women; less is known about this process among women with physical disabilities who become mothers. Objective: The present study aimed to understand and describe the subjective experiences of Israeli women with lifelong physical disabilities in their motherhood journey from the perspective of the intersection of their motherhood and disability identities, and from the disability studies approach. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 Israeli mothers with visible lifelong physical disabilities who live in the community and raise their children. Results: Three themes emerged from the interviews: (1) the decision to become a mother: Coping with the disability identity for the first time; (2) The FIRST 3 years: Depending on others as limiting their motherhood identity; (3) after age three: Balancing the motherhood and disability identities. Conclusion: The transition to motherhood led to identity transformation among women with physical disabilities. Becoming a mother increased the tension between dependence and independence in the context of disability, which also influenced the intersection of their motherhood and disability identities and their wellbeing. Practitioners should provide emotional support to mothers with disabilities and help them embrace the positive aspects of each identity and strike a balance between them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: There is limited evidence that the psychological characteristics of athletes with disabilities are identical to those of non-disabled athletes, owing to differences in ecological traits, and there is insufficient information on how athletes with disabilities perceive disabled athletes' perception of errors, challenges, and deliberate practice. Therefore, it is necessary to examine whether the causal model of the perception of errors, challenge, and deliberate practice will be reproduced in the same way as in non-disabled athletes. Therefore, this study aimed to verify a causal model of the perception of errors, challenges, and deliberate practice by athletes with disabilities. Methods: The participants were 189 athletes with physical and hearing impairments (131 men and 58 women) registered with the 2023 Korea Paralympic Committee. Data were collected through a survey and the participants responded using a self-report method. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to verify normality, correlation analysis to examine relationships between variables, and structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the hypotheses. Results: Based on SEM analysis, the results of this study showed that the causal relationships between the perception of errors, challenges, and deliberate practice were partially significant. Specifically, perception of errors and reflection positively predicted challenges, whereas burden of mistakes negatively predicted challenges. Additionally, challenges were found to have a positive effect on deliberate practice. Discussion: By comprehensively examining the above, it can be interpreted as a major factor that can promote and reduce challenges depending on how athletes with disabilities perceive their mistakes. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess employment characteristics of individuals with physical disabilities who currently participate in adaptive gaming and determine if there is a positive association between adaptive gaming and employment. Materials and methods: A survey was administered to individuals with disabilities who currently use adaptive video gaming equipment to gather information on demographics, gaming habits, employment characteristics, and subjective benefits of gaming on employment. Results: The study included 606 participants. Over 57% of participants reported full-time or part-time employment. Nearly half of the participants reported using their equipment either most or all of the time to complete tasks related to work. Participants using their equipment to complete work tasks most or all of the time were more likely to be employed full-time (p = 0.0021). Over 75% of participants reported subjective benefits of adaptive video gaming on their employment. Conclusion: Participants in this study had higher rates of employment compared to national averages for individuals with physical disabilities. More frequent use of adaptive gaming equipment for work was associated with a higher likeliness of full-time employment. Most participants who were employed reported subjective benefits of adaptive gaming on employment through improvements in mental health, physical function, and cognition. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Participation in recreational activities has been shown to be associated with increased rates of employment for individuals with physical disabilities. Employment rates for those who participate in adaptive video gaming were found to be higher compared to individuals with disabilities in the general population. Although assistive technology (AT) is recognized as a basic human right, access to AT, and particularly electronic aids to daily living (EADL), is limited. We aimed to understand how persons with high level spinal cord injury (SCI) prioritize EADL needs and assess satisfaction and efficacy of self-identified EADL. Thus, in this case series, we recruited three participants with C4, C5 or C6 SCI receiving in-patient SCI rehabilitation. Each received dedicated occupational therapy-based assistance in identifying EADL items within an unrestricted envelope of support ($5000 CDN) for use in maximizing physical independence and supporting their return to community-based living. Items identified were categorized by need (emergency/security; home environment control; or virtual access to the outside world). Each participant selected distinct EADL. Evaluation of selected EADL items indicated very high satisfaction. The selected EADL contributed to participants' returns to employment, community life, or reduced requirements for attendant services. These findings suggest that identification of essential technology should reflect the unique needs of each person and the context in which it will be used. These findings also support use of mainstream technology to meet EADL needs of individuals with limited physical abilities. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Initial spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation should provide individualized identification and selection of electronic aids for daily living (EADL) for those with very minimal arm and hand function, including mainstream voice-activated technologies, to increase independence and function. Individualized self-selection of EADL, rather than general prescription-based provision of EADL, is most appropriate for identifying key EADL that will enhance function and independence in the community. Support from occupational therapists with expertise in SCI rehabilitation can provide expertise in identifying and setting up EADL, including in the community, to ensure selected EADL function as intended. This study qualitatively explored how adults aging with long-term physical disabilities perceive the built environment to influence their community participation. A convenience sample of community-dwelling adults with long-term physical disabilities ages 45–65 participated in virtual semi-structured interviews until thematic saturation was reached (n = 20). Data were analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis. Five themes were identified: vigilance and sense of safety, accessibility of and access to transportation, community environment accessibility, sense of community, and access to support, spaces, and resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. Multiple participants described their neighborhoods as unsafe and reported not leaving their homes in months due to inaccessible home entrances or pandemic-related concerns. These results enhance our understanding of how this population perceives environmental barriers to community participation, particularly in low-resourced neighborhoods during the COVID-19 pandemic. These results may inform researchers, community organizations, and funding agencies in intervention development and implementation to address built environment barriers. Introduction: Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness is a promising biomarker of axonal loss and a potential outcome predictor in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Cognitive impairment (CoI) exhibits a high prevalence in patients with MS (pwMS), even in the early phases of the disease. Our aim was to explore the role of RNFL thickness as a predictor of physical and cognitive disability in pwMS. Methods: All newly diagnosed pwMS referred to the MS centre of the University-Hospital "Policlinico-San Marco" between 2015–2019 were evaluated at baseline and at 3 years. RNFL and ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness for right (r.e.) and left eyes (l.e.) were measured with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Disability level and cognitive profile were assessed, using the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for Multiple Sclerosis (BICAMS) battery, respectively. Results: We consecutively enrolled 487 pwMS, including 68 (14.0%) with primary progressive MS (PPMS). At baseline, RNFL and GCL were bilaterally thinner in PPMS (r.e. 90.4 ± 12.7; l.e. 90.2 ± 13.5, and r.e. 80.1 ± 11.2; l.e. 80.3 ± 12.6, respectively) compared to relapsing–remitting MS (RRMS) (r.e. 94.6 ± 13.1; l.e. 94.3 ± 14.8, and r.e. 85.1 ± 9.5; l.e. 84.9 ± 9.3, respectively) (p < 0.01). Both groups exhibited reduced RNFL and GCL thickness, worse cognitive performance and higher EDSS scores at 3-years follow-up compared with baseline. RNFL thickness ≤ 88.0 μm was an independent predictor of CoI (OR = 5.32; 95% CI = 1.84–9.12; p = 0.02) and disability worsening (OR = 3.18; 95% CI = 1.21–10.33; p = 0.05). Discussion: RNFL thickness, as a biomarker of neurodegeneration, could be considered a predictive biomarker of cognitive degeneration and physical disability in MS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: While depression associated with disability has been extensively studied, how depression could differ depending on whether the disability is congenital or acquired remains to be investigated. The objective of this study was to compare depression and related factors among people with congenital and acquired physical disabilities. Methods: We used the 2016 Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled in Korea, a population-based survey for people with disability registered with the Korean government. Among 4577 participants, a total of 2128 participants with physical disability were analyzed using chi-square and binary logistic regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of depression was 12.9% in those with congenital physical disability and 16.0% in those with acquired physical disability. Stress due to disability and family relationship satisfaction were associated with higher and lower odds of depression, respectively, in both disability groups. Discrimination due to disability, divorce, social participation, and subjective social status were significant predictors of depression only in people with acquired disability. Conclusions: Compared to those with congenital disability, individuals with acquired disability can be more susceptible to issues relating to social relationships, social standing and discrimination. Findings of this study suggest that acquired disability and adapting to changes associated with it can be a source of mental distress in addition to living with it. Efforts are needed to address discrimination, provide supportive social relationships, and provide supportive living conditions in order to reduce depression in persons living with disability, especially those with acquired disability. Purpose: This study aimed to: (1) test and explain the type of experience scuba diving is among people with physical impairments based on the experience-type framework; (2) assess and describe their personality based on the Big Five domains; and (3) identify if personality, years diving, and diving level predict experience-type. Methods: An explanatory sequential mixed methods design was employed. The quantitative phase used a cross-sectional survey (n = 103). The qualitative phase used follow-up interviews with 15 participants divided into 3 case study groups. Joint displays with meta-inferences integrated the data. Results: Quantitative and qualitative findings concurred on scuba being a transformative experience. 82.52% of survey participants reported scuba as a transformative experience, with no significant differences on experience impact based on impairment category (p = 0.56), impairment onset (p = 0.66), gender (p = 0.08), race/ethnicity (p = 0.51), or age (p = 0.07). Big Five personality domains, years diving, or diving level did not predict experience impact (R2 = 0.14, F(12,90) = 1.304, p = 0.2305). Data strand results differed on salient personality domains. Seven qualitative themes emerged, five on experience-type and two on personality. Conclusions: We recommend the exploration of scuba diving as a prospective rehabilitation intervention. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Innovative rehabilitation interventions that provide positive experiences and long-term health benefits to people with physical impairments are needed. Participants reported that scuba diving had a positive transformative impact in their lives through positive emotions, peace/relaxation, personal growth, development of skills, social connections, physical and mental healing, and lasting behavioral changes. Reporting scuba diving as a transformative experience was not influenced by the scuba divers' personality domains, diving level, demographic characteristics, or the number of years they had been diving. Healthcare access and services is one of the challenges faced by people with physical disability (PWPD). PWPD also has at risk of early death and preventable chronic illness. Lack of access to healthcare services includes delay or failure to receive needed care, lack of continuity of care and financial burden will result in deterioration of health, wellbeing and functional status. The aim of this paper was to review barriers towards healthcare access and services among PWPD based on the existing qualitative studies. We conducted a scoping review of relevant qualitative articles from PubMed, Scopus and ProQuest. The article search was based on the available keyword in the title with the publication restricted within 10 years (between 2012 to 2021). The search strategy was conducted using MeSH terms of 'barriers, healthcare access, healthcare services and physical disability'. In this review, people with different kinds of physical disabilities were included. There were 2004 articles obtained from the initial search. 27 articles met the inclusion criteria for the final review. In each study, PWPD noted various barriers to access healthcare services. Findings from this review revealed five themes: personal; financial; attitudinal and communication; health system; structural and physical barriers. The findings showed that PWPD faces various barriers when accessing healthcare services. Addressing these barriers could help create a healthcare system that is inclusive and accessible for all. Purpose: Eye-gaze technology offers professionals a range of feedback tools, but it is not well understood how these are used to support decision-making or how professionals understand their purpose and function. This paper explores how professionals use a variety of feedback tools and provides commentary on their current use and ideas for future tool development.Methods and Materials: The study adopted a focus group methodology with two groups of professional participants: those involved in the assessment and provision of eye-gaze technology (n = 6) and those who interact with individuals using eye-gaze technology on an ongoing basis (n = 5). Template analysis was used to provide qualitative insight into the research questions.Results: Professionals highlighted several issues with existing tools and gave suggestions on how these could be made better. It is generally felt that existing tools highlight the existence of problems but offer little in the way of solutions or suggestions. Some differences of opinion related to professional perspective were highlighted. Questions about automating certain processes were raised by both groups.Conclusions: Discussion highlighted the need for different levels of feedback for users and professionals. Professionals agreed that current tools are useful to identify problems but do not offer insight into potential solutions. Some tools are being used to draw inferences about vision and cognition which are not supported by existing literature. New tools may be needed to better meet the needs of professionals and an increased understanding of how existing tools function may support such development. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Professionals sometimes make use of feedback tools to infer the cognitive and/or visual abilities of users, although the tools are not designed or validated for these purposes, and the existing literature does not support this. Some eye-gaze feedback tools are perceived as a "black box", leaving professionals uncertain as to how to usefully interpret and apply the outputs. There is an opportunity to improve tools that provide feedback on how well an eye-gaze system is working or how effectively a user can interact with this technology. Purpose: The ways in which words are used to describe and discuss people with disabilities has long been an area of social concern. Previous research has demonstrated that language can overtly and subtly influence cognitions and perceptions of individuals, but there is less research on how language relates to perceptions of individuals with disabilities. Materials and methods: A content analysis of 236 peer-reviewed articles was performed to explore differences in the frequency of the use of "disability," "disorder," and "illness" in academic articles related to eight common conditions: deafness, blindness, multiple sclerosis, quadriplegia, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and addiction. Results: Results indicated that there were differences in how disability language was used by academic writers. Specifically, "disability" appeared in the writing more frequently in articles related to physical disabilities, "disorder" appeared most frequently in articles related to anxiety and depression, and "illness" appeared most frequently in articles related to schizophrenia. Conclusions: This observed difference in frequency use could reflect differences in the context and meaning of the use of these conditions. Suggestions for future research are discussed. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: The way individuals write and talk about conditions may indicate the way they think about the conditions. When compared to articles written about physical conditions, the term "disability" is used less by academic writers than when discussing mental conditions. This suggests that academic writers may view mental conditions as less "prototypical" disabilities (compared to physical conditions). Careful consideration should be given to the language used when discussing all types of disabilities. When writers, media professionals, policymakers, and the public are educated on the diverse range of conditions and the unique challenges they present to individuals, only then can rehabilitation be truly comprehensive and effective. Depression is frequently reported in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) due to the disastrous prognosis of progressive motor impairment, but the risk of depression in ALS is still unclear. Therefore, we investigated the risk of depression in ALS and analyzed the effect of ALS-related physical disability on the risk of developing depression using the Korean National Health Insurance Service (KNHIS) database. A total of 2241 ALS patients, as defined by the International Classification Diseases (ICD, G12.21) and Rare Intractable Disease codes (V123), and 1:10 sex- and age-matched controls were selected from the KNHIS. After applying exclusion criteria (non-participation in national health screening, history of depression, or having missing data), 595 ALS patients and 9896 non-ALS individuals were finally selected. Primary outcome is newly diagnosed depression during follow-up duration defined by ICD code (F32 or F33). A Cox regression model was used to examine the hazard ratios (HRs) after adjustment for potential confounders. During the follow-up period, 283 cases of depression in the ALS group and 1547 in the controls were recorded. The adjusted HR for depression in ALS was 9.1 (95% confidence interval [CI] 7.87−10.60). The risk of depression was slightly higher in the disabled ALS group (aHR 10.1, 95% CI 7.98−12.67) than in the non-disabled ALS group (aHR 8.78, 95% CI 7.42−10.39). The relative risk of depression was higher in younger patients than in older patients, and in obese patients than in non-obese patients. Aims Methods Results Conclusion Age‐associated muscle loss, termed sarcopenia is the major cause of physical disability in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) are commonly used to treat CHF patients; however, their impacts on the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) and sarcopenia in CHF patients remain poorly understood. We aim to investigate the potential impact of ACEi on NMJ and CHF‐induced sarcopenia.The cardiac function, short physical performance battery, handgrip strength (HGS), appendicular skeletal mass index, gait speed (GS) and plasma c‐terminal agrin fragment‐22 (CAF22), a marker of NMJ degradation, were assessed in controls (n = 81) and CHF patients treated with (n = 134) or without (n = 145) ACEi.Irrespective of treatment, HGS and GS, indicators of sarcopenia, were profoundly declined in the patients with CHF vs. controls. However, patients on ACEi demonstrated significantly better HGS and GS compared to non‐ACEi patients (P < .001). The level of CAF22 was significantly lower (P < .0001) in the ACEi‐treated compared to non‐ACEi CHF patients. Further, the level of CAF22 was inversely correlated (R2 = .33, P < .0001) with HGS in both ACEi and non‐ACEi CHF patients, while CAF22 was inversely correlated with GS and short physical performance battery only in ACEi‐treated but not in patients on other therapies without ACEi. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed CAF22 as a potential diagnostic marker (95% confidence interval: 0.785–0.883; P < .0001) for CHF.Collectively, these findings strongly suggest that ACEi limits CHF‐induced neuromuscular disjunction and physical disability in CHF. Background: People with mobility limitations have a disproportionately higher rate of acquiring secondary conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular comorbidity, pain, fatigue, depression, deconditioning, and type 2 diabetes. These conditions often result from poor access to home and community-based health promotion/wellness programs. The aim of this project was to determine the feasibility of delivering an online community membership-based fitness program for individuals with mobility impairments. Methods: For this prospective single-arm study, participants were recruited from members of a community fitness facility that serves people with physical disabilities and chronic health conditions. While all members had access to the online platform, individuals had to opt-in to participate in the research component. Activity options included 16 pre-recorded videos and 9 live exercise classes. During the 8-week program, participants had an opportunity to earn three exercise incentives for reaching certain activity milestones. Enrollment percentage, attendance, and attrition were tracked to assess program feasibility and acceptability. Changes in participant-reported outcomes including self-reported physical activity, psychosocial outcomes, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) were examined using non-parametric analyses. Results: A total of 146 eligible individuals were screened of which 33 enrolled (22.6%). Two participants withdrew from the study, so a total of 31 were used for analyses. Participants included 29 women and 12 Black people with an average age of 60 (± 15.9) years. Health conditions included stroke, post-polio, arthritis, neuropathy, cerebral palsy, and obesity. Ten participants used an assistive device to get around inside the home. Twenty-six participants (78.8%) completed the online program, and 5 participants earned all 3 participation incentives. The mean number of live Zoom exercise classes attended by the participants was 12.8 (range = 0–43) over 8 weeks; 3 of 31 participants did not attend any classes. On average, participants watched 128 min (range = 0–704 min) of pre-recorded videos; 6 of 31 participants did not view any pre-recorded videos. Self-reported physical activity showed the largest improvement (11.15 units; 95% CI, 3.08, 19.56) with an effect size of 0.51 (Cohen's d). Conclusions: This pilot study of an online membership-based fitness program for people with mobility impairments demonstrated preliminary effectiveness in increasing physical activity and was found to be feasible and acceptable. Feasibility endpoints do indicate potential to improve retention. These results suggest that online delivery of exercise programs can broaden the reach of specialized community fitness programs and is a promising direction for future work and fully powered trials are warranted to assess intervention efficacy. Currently, young people with disabilities practice less sport than people without disabilities, which is a risk to their health and affects their well-being. The aim of this research was to identify the specific dimensions and tools used to measure psychological well-being (PWB) in young athletes with physical disabilities and to analyze the influence of sport. A systematic review was conducted using PUBMED/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and Sportdiscus databases, and the search was completed without limitation to any specific year, including results up to and including 29 May, 2023. A total of 2112 articles were obtained in the initial search. Eligibility criteria were: (i) athletes with a physical disability, (ii) performing adapted and non-adapted physical activity and/or sport, (iii) the study aimed to analyse well-being, and (iv) outcomes of psychological well-being variables were identified. Exclusion criteria were (i) people with injury or transient difficulty, (ii) rehabilitative physical activity, and (iii) the results did not show any psychological well-being variables or mentions. This review identified that the most used dimension was mastery of the environment, together with the autonomy. All studies showed a positive correlation between sport practice and psychological well-being. Five measurement tools were identified knowing the state of psychological well-being of young athletes with disabilities is essential to promote successful participation in sports activities. Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFOs) are frequently prescribed to manage gait impairments in children with physical disability, and it is important that AFOs are prescribed and fitted appropriately to maximize potential benefits. AFO tuning, manipulation of the AFO footwear combination (AFO-FC) by means of video vector analysis, is routinely used to optimize AFO use. However, the incidence or types of changes that are implemented after this type of orthotic review are unknown. To investigate the impact of a multi-disciplinary video vector clinic on AFO provision in children with physical disability. All children who attended a video vector clinic over a period of 10-years from the establishment of the clinic were included in the study. Outcomes of the clinic were grouped into 5 categories: (1) No change to AFO-FC; (2) Altered/tuned AFO-FC; (3) Discontinued AFO-FC; (4) Recast AFO; (5) Change in prescription. Data were summarised narratively. 141 independently ambulant children were included. The diagnoses were bilateral cerebral palsy (39 %, n=55), unilateral cerebral palsy (38 %, n=54), spina bifida (9 %, n=13), hereditary spastic paraparesis (2 %, n=3) and other (11 %, n=16). No changes were made in 52 % of cases (n=74), tuning in 22 % of cases (n=31), the AFO was recast in 13 % of cases (n=19) and discontinued in 10 % of cases (n=14). A prescription change was recommended in 3 % of cases (n=4). Our findings suggest that the video vector clinic is a time efficient and effective means of assessing gait function in children with AFOs. Without assessment at the clinic, most of the children assessed would likely have been referred for a full and more time consuming 3-dimensional gait analysis. Emerging assistive technologies (AT), such as voice assistants (VA), impact the citizenry and organisations. Amongst those affected, there is a group of people with developmental and physical disabilities that have been impacted the most. As the use of technology evolves, more studies analysing the impact of VA on these populations are emerging. However, there is still a dearth of studies congregating results systematically, in which it would be possible to understand the impact of VA technologies on different contexts. Thus, our study aims to understand the applicability and impact of VAs on the lives of people with disabilities and the perspectives of this emerging AT. Drawn on a rigorous systematic literature review using the PRISMA protocol, we included 68 articles for analysis after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. We identified seven intertwined themes related to the benefits and challenges of VA technologies. The emergent benefits are the impact on users' ecosystem and well-being and economic and social benefits; conversely, the challenges are inherent issues related to technology, financial and social challenges. We contribute to theory and practice by understanding the impact of VAs on populations with disabilities' ecosystem and well-being at the micro, meso and macro-levels of the phenomena. While early literature in accessibility services in postsecondary education largely focused on physically disabled students, their presence in the peer-reviewed literature from 1951-2012 was described as sparse by Gelbar et al. (2015). The studies that existed were largely descriptive, and no studies investigated the effectiveness of accommodations or services for physically disabled students. The present study extends this prior analysis and examines the professional literature on physically disabled students published from 2013-2021. Results indicated there was an increase in articles during this time that featured physically disabled students in the overall sample, and of articles focused on this cohort specifically. There was also an increase in the number of articles based in countries outside of the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, as well as a rise in the number of articles featuring qualitative designs. However, there remains a minimal number of articles featuring research designs that allow the field of postsecondary education and disability to determine research-based practices in providing access to the population, as well as articles that focus on 2-year and career/technical institutions and on faculty and institutional staff. Although conventional wheelchairs have aided the mobility of people with disabilities, they are limited in scope due to physical exhaustion and health problems from sitting in wheelchairs for a long time. This research is important to develop seatback and cushion features for Health Electric Wheelchair Portable IoT-Based wheelchairs, for easy and comfortable mobility for people with disabilities. The development of wheelchairs aims to reduce the negative impact of prolonged immobilization on people with physical disabilities. Methods: Research & Development method. The development stage: 1). The development of pads for Health Electric Wheelchair Portable IoT-Based seatback and cushion needed by wheelchair users; 2). Development of expert-validated Health Electric Wheelchair Portable IoT-Based ergonomics and seatback in accordance with the needs of wheelchair users to improve physical independence; 3). Modify components and equipment for Health Electric Wheelchair Portable IoT-Based cushion and seatback. Results: The result of this development of this wheelchair pays attention to ergonomic design by developing seatback and chair features for Health Electric Wheelchair Portable IoT-Based wheelchairs to provide safety and comfort when using wheel-chairs, especially physical disability. This study explored conceptualizations of disability pertaining to peer relationships versus romantic relationships, as well as type of physical disability, using story-completion methods. Seventy-four graduate and undergraduate students from a Canadian university completed one of two versions of a story stem featuring an individual with a physical disability who was either a classmate or a potential romantic partner. Through the process of thematic analysis, three themes were generated as patterns across stories: (1) assumptions about disability present from first glance; (2) uncertainty in navigating negative assumptions of disability; and (3) from discomfort to acceptance of disability through social connection. Storylines differed depending on the type of relationship (i.e., peer or romantic) in both story length and outcome of the relationship. Findings suggest the usefulness of the relatively infrequently used method of story completion for assessing students' narratives and discussion of meanings surrounding differing relationships with persons with a disability. This study further develops our understanding of cultural norms of disability, as well as highlights the importance of disability knowledge and interaction between persons with and without a disability, to foster positive change in representations and perceptions of disability. Abstract Background With increasing focus on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in chronic rheumatic diseases, we aimed to evaluate the self-reported physical and psychosocial health in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) compared to matched population-based controls. Furthermore, we aimed to study the association of patient- and physician-reported outcome measures in JIA with patient-reported physical disability. Methods We used data from a Norwegian JIA cohort study (NorJIA), including clinical characteristics and outcome measures in participants with JIA and sex- and age-matched population-based controls. Self-reported physical and psychosocial health were assessed using the generic Child Health Questionnaire (CHQ). Comparisons between children with JIA and controls were performed by test of proportions for categorical variables and t-test for continuous variables. To evaluate the association of patient- and physician-reported outcome measures with patient-reported physical disability, assessed with the Child Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ) in children with JIA, we used logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results In total, 221 participants with JIA (59.3% females, median age 12.7 years) and 207 controls with available data were included. In the JIA group, 24.3% scored below the norm for physical health (CHQ PhS 0). Several patient-reported outcome measures, such as poor physical health (CHQ PhS 0), adjusted OR 19.0 (95% CI 5.6, 64.1), 14.1 (95% CI 6.8, 29.2), and 14.0 (95% CI 6.2, 31.6), respectively. Associations were also found for active disease according to Wallace (adjusted OR 36.3, 95% CI 10.3, 128.1), and physician-reported global assessment of disease activity (adjusted OR 6.2, 95% CI 3.1, 12.6). Conclusions The strong association between patient- and physician-reported outcome measures and patient-reported physical disability strengthens the importance of including the patient’s voice in a comprehensive evaluation of patient outcome in JIA. Abstract Despite the association between spinal cord injury (SCI) and various neurological diseases, the risk of Parkinson’s disease (PD) in SCI is not elucidated yet. Especially, the role of SCI severity and injury level in the risk of PD development is not investigated. Based on the nation-wide cohort data the Korean National Health Insurance Service between 2010 and 2018, we investigated the incidence of PD in 7,182 patients with SCI compared with 24,844 age- and sex-matched controls. Adjusted hazard ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using Cox proportional hazards regression. We compared the risk of PD based on the degree of disability (without disability, mild, severe) and SCI level (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar). During the mean follow-up duration of 4.31 years, patients with SCI had a higher risk of PD compared with matched controls. The PD risk was greater among patients with SCI with disability than in those without disability, especially those with mild disability. Additionally, cervical-level injury was associated with the highest risk in patients with SCI without disability, while thoracic-level injury was associated with the highest risk in those with disability. Our study found patients with SCI have increased risk of PD, particularly those with disability and thoracic-level injuries.

The goal of this study is to understand the short-term and long-term consequences of having a sibling who has a physical and/or cognitive disability for short-term and long-term psychological well-being and the perceived support available to these individuals. According to family systems theory, if there is a lack of support provided to individuals with a sibling with a disability, that individual may experience disruptions to their psychological well-being due to the disequilibrium in one or more dyads within the system. Using a mixed-method approach, emerging adults who have a sibling with a physical and/or cognitive disability participated in one-on-one interviews via Zoom (N = 13) or completed an online survey (N = 63). Qualitative data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's six-step thematic analytic approach, and quantitative data were analyzed using linear regression. Quantitative results revealed minor short-term consequences and no long-term consequences for psychological well-being, but qualitative results revealed strained relationships with siblings and parents, lack of parental attention, lack of information about sibling's diagnosis, and the child playing a parental role. Quantitative and qualitative data also revealed that parental support contributed the most to psychological well-being, in addition to educational support and developing a close relationship with the sibling. In the present paper, we focused on toys depicting physical disabilities and their potential role as inclusive educational means in kindergartens. We tested The Mere Exposure Effect and the Contact Theory (previously suggested as explanatory mechanisms underlying more favorable attitudes toward disability) by using toys depicting physical disabilities/ impairments as the object of contact/exposure. The study involved Romanian children (aged 3 to 6), parents, and teachers and two measurement moments. We explored whether the presence of specific toys (more specifically, a toy in a wheelchair and one with a prosthetic leg) might contribute to specific changes in children's attitudes toward physical disability. Additionally, we investigated the links between parents' and teachers' views on disability, their views toward the inclusion of children with disability, and children's emotions and cognitions regarding disability. Overall, our results suggested that (1) Regardless of the stimuli (toy/image, depicting or not physical disabilities), the children in the experimental group reported more positive attitudes compared to the control group; (2) The experimental condition, i.e., the exposure effect had a significant moderating effect on the link between children's attitudes at Time 1 and Time 2; (3) Parents' positive attitudes toward disability were significantly associated with children's attitudes toward specific disabilities. Introduction. Sexual health is a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, quality of life, and a sense of fulfillment. A significant percentage of men with spinal cord injury (SCI) experience ejaculatory issues (95%), poor semen quality (75%), and erectile dysfunction (80%), making it impossible for them to conceive without medical assistance. Material and methods. The bibliographic resources were analyzed and selected from databases such as PubMed, SCOPUS, HINARI, and Web of Science to identify studies on the desired topic. Following the initial research, 128 items were identified, and 32 representative articles were selected for this synthesis article. Results. Damage to the spinal cord can result in partial or complete loss of function below the level of the injury. These injuries lead to impaired ejaculatory and erectile function in addition to reproductive issues, which might include abnormal sperm motility, morphology, and viability, as well as reduced spermatogenesis. Challenges such as loss of bladder and bowel function, changes in physical appearance, spasms, lack of communication, and stereotypes can affect sexual life of men with SCI. Conclusions. Studying sexual dysfunction in disabled men is essential for promoting comprehensive healthcare, supporting mental health, fostering healthy relationships, and advocating for the rights and inclusion of individuals with disabilities. Understanding the mechanisms affecting sexual function in people with SCI is of particular practical interest both in medical practice and in subsequent studies on patients.

Abstract Background The sudden introduction of social distancing measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in significant lifestyle changes for the UK population. People living with physical disabilities were deemed to be at greater risk of complications following COVID-19 infection and were subjected to stricter social distancing guidelines. But gaps remain in our understanding of how the COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions affected the ability to access support, health and wellbeing of people with physical disabilities. Such understanding is vital to ensure equitable future pandemic preparedness for people living with physical disabilities. Methods We conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews with 31 people living in the UK between May 2020 and January 2022. All participants self-identified as having a physical disability that affected their mobility, sight, or hearing. We analysed the data using reflexive thematic analysis. Results Six themes were identified that described the impact of the pandemic on ability to access support, health and wellbeing: (i) adaptations to healthcare provision led to difficulties in managing health and wellbeing; (ii) exacerbations of inequalities in access to public space due to social distancing guidelines; (iii) experiences of hostility from able-bodied people; (iv) loss of social lives and encounters; (v) difficulties maintaining distance from others and subsequent fear of infection and (vi) strategies to support wellbeing and coping when confined to the home. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated existing health and social inequalities experienced by disabled people. The disproportionate impact of the pandemic on service provision and social connections resulted in challenging circumstances for disabled people who faced unmet medical needs, deteriorating health, and at times, hostile public spaces. Disabled people’s experiences need to be incorporated into future pandemic or health-related emergency planning to ensure equality of access to services and public spaces to ensure their health and wellbeing is supported and maintained.

Abstract Background Physical disability is an important cause of affecting the quality of life in the elderly. The association between standing height and physical disability is less studied. Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible link between standing height and physical disability among U.S. adults aged 60 years and older. Methods The cross-sectional data were obtained from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015–2018. Physical disability was assessed by six questions: “Have serious difficulty hearing (SDH)?”, “Have serious difficulty seeing (SDS)?”, “Have serious difficulty concentrating (SDC)?”, “Have serious difficulty walking (SDW)?”, “Have difficulty dressing or bathing (DDB)?” and “Have difficulty doing errands alone (DDEA)?”. Responses to these questions were “yes” or “no”. Answer yes to one of the above six questions was identified as physical disability. Standing height (cm) was measured with an altimeter. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to examine the possible link between standing height and physical disability after adjustment for all covariates. Results A total of 2624 participants aged ≥ 60 years were included in our study, including 1279 (48.7%) females and 1345 (51.3%) males. The mean age of participants was 69.41 ± 6.82 years. After adjusting for all potential confounders, the inverse relationship between standing height and all physical disability (APD) was statistically significant (OR = 0.976, 95%CI:0.957–0.995). In addition, among six types of physical disability (SDH, SDS, SDC, SDW, DDB, DDEA), standing height was also a protective factor for SDW (OR = 0.961, 95%CI:0.939–0.983) and DDEA (OR = 0.944, 95%CI:0.915–0.975) in the full-adjusted model. Conclusion The cross-sectional population based study demonstrates that standing height is a protective factor for physical disability among U.S. adults aged 60 years and older.

Objectives : The interface of dementia and physical disability is poorly characterized in the elderly population. We used the 2017-2018 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) (PKPR71FL) to investigate the prevalence and interface of dementia and physical disability in Pakistan. Study design : A cross-sectional study design was used by analyzing the latest DHS conducted for Pakistan from 22 November 2017 to 30 April 2018. Methods : We used Gamma correlation to evaluate the effects of several demographic and socioeconomic factors on dementia and physical disability in 2,899 males and 2,284 females. Results : The prevalence of both forms of disabilities increased with advancing age with a higher preponderance among females. Being unmarried, not educated, having a smaller household, and poverty was associated with a greater disability. Having four or more children was associated with a higher disability in men but lower disability in women. The prevalence of disability was highest in Punjab and lowest in Balochistan. Conclusion : Altogether, we describe several factors associated with the burden of disability in Pakistan. Community-based interventions are recommended to reduce the disability of the elderly in Pakistan.

Background: Persons with disabilities (PWD) are more likely to visit the emergency department (ED) and often have complex health needs when accessing care in the ED. Yet there is limited understanding of ED care experiences among PWD, especially in a Canadian context. The aim of this study was to examine the ED care experiences of PWD in contrast to a comparison group in Kingston, Ontario to better understand their health care needs. Methods: A mixed-methods study with a community-based participatory approach examining participants' past ED care experiences (within 24 months) was conducted in Kingston, ON. Quantitative data from those with disabilities and those from the comparison group were compared using chi squared tests to identify differences between groups. An inductive and deductive thematic analysis approach was used to identify themes in the shared qualitative data. Convergence of findings across quantitative and qualitative data was undertaken. Results: A total of 175 participants identified as having a disability. In contrast with the comparison group (N = 949), PWD were more likely to report being given too little attention to their needs (p < 0.001), that it was more important to be treated with kindness/respect than to receive the best possible medical care (p < 0.001), to report feelings of disrespect and/or judgement (p < 0.001), and that better understanding of personal identity/situation/culture and better communication would improve ED care. Qualitative analysis highlighted the following themes: poor communication between PWD and health care providers (HCP), compassionate medical care received, perceived HCP negative attitudes/beliefs related to having a disability and substance misuse, and perceived HCP lack of knowledge/skill to treat the unique health needs of PWD. Conclusion: Findings highlight the need to improve ED care for PWD. Future quality improvement initiatives should focus on incorporating a deeper understanding of disability into medical education and emergency medicine (EM) residency education, designing curricula that emphasize cultural humility, and implementing community-based placements providing opportunities for health professionals to work with and learn from PWD. Disparities may disproportionately exist for those with disabilities when using mobile devices, which are critical for independence in activities such as socialization and leisure. Prior 3D printing studies in rehabilitation have not focused on mobile device access to everyday preferred activities. This study examined user satisfaction, self-rated performance and satisfaction with daily activities while using the mobile device, and the feasibility of customized 3D printed assistive devices. The design was a one-group, quantitative pre-test to post-test study of individuals (n = 10) residing in long-term care with a physical disability due to a neurological condition. Satisfaction with the 3D printed device, as compared to the previously used assistive device, was significantly higher (p = 0.005), as well as improvements in self-rated daily activity performance (p = 0.016) and satisfaction (p = 0.037), with acceptability and satisfaction of the intervention. Findings suggest that 3D printing is feasible with a potential increase in user satisfaction through a customization process that is client centred. Recommendations for settings interested in providing customized 3D printed assistive devices, and for future studies, include client centred integration and educational support on mobile device usage during activities, familiarity with common customization and modification requests, and adjusting timelines to the facility's service delivery capacity. Objective: Disability of any type and in any form often leads to mental crises by causing anxiety, worry, reduced self-confidence, and psychological difficulties. The present study aimed to predict mental health and self-esteem based on perceived social support in youth with physical disabilities in Tehran. Methods and Materials: The research method was descriptive and correlational. The statistical population consisted of youth aged 20-35 with physical disabilities from seven centers for individuals with disabilities in Tehran in 2023, totaling approximately 1500 individuals. Of this population, 400 were accessible samples (characteristics of the samples included: having only physical disabilities and being aged 20-35), of which 250 were male, and the rest were female. From this number, 196 young people, both male and female, were randomly selected and participated in the tests according to the Morgan table. The research instruments included the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support by Zimet et al. (1988), the General Health Questionnaire by Goldberg (1972), and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (1967). Data analysis was performed using multiple regression analysis with SPSS version 27. Findings: The results of the study showed that the components of family, others, and perceived social support could predict mental health. The findings indicate that perceived social support (b=2.170) was identified as the strongest predictor of mental health. Additionally, perceived social support and its components could not predict self-esteem, and thus the second hypothesis was not confirmed with 95% confidence. The way this information would be best communicated is also of interest. A two-round e-Delphi study was utilised to explore consensus. A panel of stakeholders from Ireland including experts in positioning clients in custom-contoured seating and caregivers were recruited. The first round consisted of open-ended questions and was analysed using thematic analysis. The second round employed a rating technique and 7-point Likert scale. Consensus was set a priori at 70% agreement. The way information should be communicated and by whom was rated in order of preference.Fifteen participants were recruited, nine clinicians and four caregivers. Fifty-two statements under six themes (transfers = 10, positioning = 22, pressure care = 4, general use = 4, post-supply follow-up = 8, functional activity = 4) were generated in round 1 by 13/15 participants. Round 2 was completed by 10/15. 49/52 statements reached consensus and were deemed important. The ways information should be communicated and by whom was identified. Caregivers want individualised information whereas clinicians preferred a more generic approach.There was a high degree of consensus on what information is required to support caregivers. The topics demonstrate the extensive information that should be provided. The preferred delivery method for primary caregivers was hands-on training with the opportunity to practice and take videos. Stakeholders differed in how they would prefer information delivered. Further research should evaluate the method of delivering training and its effectiveness.Caregivers report a lack of guidance on postural management, which exacerbates their own health problems and results in underutilization of positioning equipment.Caregivers should be provided with information on transfers, positioning, pressure care, general chair use, post-supply follow-up, and the impact on functional activities when a new custom contoured seat is supplied.The preferred method of providing information to primary caregivers is to use hands-on training with the opportunity to practice and take videos during the supply appointment. However, they have low social congruence among racially and ethnically minoritized women.Future frameworks must take an intersectional approach and consider the compounding injustices of ableism, racism, classism and ageism on reproductive health. Background: The sudden introduction of social distancing measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in significant lifestyle changes for the UK population. People living with physical disabilities were deemed to be at greater risk of complications following COVID-19 infection and were subjected to stricter social distancing guidelines. But gaps remain in our understanding of how the COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions affected the ability to access support, health and wellbeing of people with physical disabilities. Such understanding is vital to ensure equitable future pandemic preparedness for people living with physical disabilities. Methods: We conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews with 31 people living in the UK between May 2020 and January 2022. All participants self-identified as having a physical disability that affected their mobility, sight, or hearing. We analysed the data using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Six themes were identified that described the impact of the pandemic on ability to access support, health and wellbeing: (i) adaptations to healthcare provision led to difficulties in managing health and wellbeing; (ii) exacerbations of inequalities in access to public space due to social distancing guidelines; (iii) experiences of hostility from able-bodied people; (iv) loss of social lives and encounters; (v) difficulties maintaining distance from others and subsequent fear of infection and (vi) strategies to support wellbeing and coping when confined to the home. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated existing health and social inequalities experienced by disabled people. The disproportionate impact of the pandemic on service provision and social connections resulted in challenging circumstances for disabled people who faced unmet medical needs, deteriorating health, and at times, hostile public spaces. Disabled people's experiences need to be incorporated into future pandemic or health-related emergency planning to ensure equality of access to services and public spaces to ensure their health and wellbeing is supported and maintained. A personal narrative is presented which explores the authors experience of being living with blindness in one eye, emphasizing the adjustments made and the insights gained from this invisible disability.

Background: Suicide is common among persons with physical disabilities as they face several physical, social, psychological, and economic problems. They are at risk for suicidal thoughts, behaviors, and death by suicide. We aimed to systematically review empirically published articles and identify the associated factors of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in persons with physical disabilities. Methods: A systematic search was carried out on the literature published from January 1, 2000 to January 19, 2023 in PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Shodh Ganga, and so on. All the synonyms of keywords or MeSH terms for suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, and physical disability were used. Two hundred thirty-six articles were found, and after following inclusion and exclusion criteria, 12 remained. Result: The associated factors of suicidal behavior were disability status (11/12 studies), burdensomeness (8/12 studies), felt stigma (4/12 studies), depressive symptoms (6/12 studies), loneliness (2/12 studies), lack of social and emotional connectedness (2/12 studies), long-term physical or mental disability (2/12 studies), congenital disability (1/12 studies), and aggression (1/12 studies). Conclusion: Timely, evidence-based, low-cost interventions can provide great assistance and address the specific needs of this vulnerable population as they have higher risk for suicidal behavior. BACKGROUND: The employment experiences of individuals with physical disabilities in previous studies shed light on the challenges they face and the assistance they receive in the workplace. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the practical and emotional social support received by individuals with physical disabilities in their workplaces from colleagues, employers, or supervisors. The study explored different forms of social support, considering both positive and negative outcomes. METHODS: Twenty participants completed a questionnaire consisting of open and closed-type questions to gather demographic and personal data. In-depth interviews were conducted as free discussions. Employing content analysis, the researchers categorized the reported forms of workplace social support into four primary categories and calculated their frequency of occurrence. RESULTS: Participants reported 175 cases of practical support and 358 cases of emotional support, both with positive and negative outcomes. Among these cases, 376 referred to social support, practical and emotional, with positive outcomes, and 157 to social support, practical and emotional, with negative outcomes. CONCLUSION: The participants received more cases of social support, practical and emotional, with positive outcomes than corresponding cases of social support with negative outcomes. At the same time, the reported cases of emotional support with positive and negative outcomes outnumbered the corresponding cases of practical support. The study critically reassesses existing Metaverse concepts and proposes a novel framework for inclusiveness of physically disabled artists. The purpose is to enable and inspire physically disabled users and content creators to participate in the evolving concept of the Metaverse. The article also highlights the need for standards and regulations governing the inclusion of people with disabilities in Metaverse projects. The study examines current information technologies and their relevance to the inclusion of physically disabled individuals in the Metaverse. We analyse existing Metaverse concepts, exploring emerging information technologies such as Virtual and Augmented Reality, and the Internet of Things. The emerging framework in the article is based on the active involvement of disabled creatives in the development of solutions for inclusivity. The review reveals that despite the proliferation of Blockchain Metaverse projects, the inclusion of physically disabled individuals in the Metaverse remains distant, with limited standards and regulations in place. The article proposes a concept of the Metaverse that leverages emerging technologies, to enable greater engagement of disabled creatives. This approach is designed to enhance inclusiveness in the Metaverse landscape. Active involvement of physically disabled individuals in the design and development of Metaverse platforms is crucial for promoting inclusivity. The framework for accessibility and inclusiveness in decentralised Metaverses provides a basis for the meaningful participation of disabled creatives. The article emphasises the importance of addressing the mechanisms for art production by individuals with disabilities in the emerging Metaverse landscape. This article addresses a global challenge related to helping disabled people operate in the modern society, targeting new and emerging technologies, and enabling early understanding of required actions for inclusiveness of people with disabilities in the Metaverse. The increased use of advanced technologies (e.g., AI and IoT) in the Metaverse, amplified the importance of this research being conducted. The aggregate impact from this research for science and society is a more inclusive, and unbiassed Metaverses that are compliant with regulations on anti-disability discrimination. This is followed by the secondary values, related to increased technological opportunities from a breakthrough in designing new, more inclusive, and autonomous devices. The research study presents a new framework for integrating new technologies in existing Metaverses, resulting with a stronger accessibility and inclusiveness of the Metaverse. This creates a new understanding on how new technologies can be used for disability discrimination prevention and early understanding of disability requirements. The purpose of this scoping review was to characterize the nature and scope of existing literature on the role of built environments in the community participation of adults aging with physical disabilities (AAwPD). A scoping review was selected to identify the volume and types of evidence available, pinpoint knowledge gaps, and clarify key concepts. Twenty-one articles were included for review, all of which were published within the last 20 years and identified components of the built environment for intervention. The purpose of this study was to examine biological variables and sports participation among secondary school students in Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve this purpose, two null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The literature review was reviewed according to the variables of the study. Survey research design was considered most appropriate for the study. Simple random sampling technique was adopted to select the seven public secondary while systematic random sampling technique was adopted to select the two hundred and fiftynine (259) students (respondents) used for the study. A structured questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The instrument was duly validated by relevant authorities. To test the various hypotheses formulated for the study, Pearson product moment correlation statistical tool was used for data analysis. The result obtained revealed that there was no significant relationship between physical disability, body type and sports participation among secondary school students. Based on these findings it was recommended among other things that school administrators should continue to organize sporting activities for physically challenged students in order to incorporate them into school sports activities in the study area. Despite the growing demand for accessible tourism, there remains a lack of research on the travel perspectives and experiences of people with disabilities. Social media platforms, such as Reddit, provide unique opportunities to understand the perspectives and experiences of people with disabilities. This study aimed to investigate travel‐related perspectives and experiences of physical disability communities, including wheelchair, deaf, and blind communities, to provide implications for travel service providers and policymakers to improve the accessibility and inclusivity of travel services. Using structural topic modeling and network analysis, 12 prominent topics related to travel perspectives and experiences among physical disability communities were identified to map their relationships. Our study highlights the significance of understanding the unique perspectives, experiences, and needs of individuals with disabilities in the hospitality and tourism industry. Background: Physical disability is an important cause of affecting the quality of life in the elderly. The association between standing height and physical disability is less studied. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible link between standing height and physical disability among U.S. adults aged 60 years and older. Methods: The cross-sectional data were obtained from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015–2018. Physical disability was assessed by six questions: "Have serious difficulty hearing (SDH)?", "Have serious difficulty seeing (SDS)?", "Have serious difficulty concentrating (SDC)?", "Have serious difficulty walking (SDW)?", "Have difficulty dressing or bathing (DDB)?" and "Have difficulty doing errands alone (DDEA)?". Responses to these questions were "yes" or "no". Answer yes to one of the above six questions was identified as physical disability. Standing height (cm) was measured with an altimeter. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to examine the possible link between standing height and physical disability after adjustment for all covariates. Results: A total of 2624 participants aged ≥ 60 years were included in our study, including 1279 (48.7%) females and 1345 (51.3%) males. The mean age of participants was 69.41 ± 6.82 years. After adjusting for all potential confounders, the inverse relationship between standing height and all physical disability (APD) was statistically significant (OR = 0.976, 95%CI:0.957–0.995). In addition, among six types of physical disability (SDH, SDS, SDC, SDW, DDB, DDEA), standing height was also a protective factor for SDW (OR = 0.961, 95%CI:0.939–0.983) and DDEA (OR = 0.944, 95%CI:0.915–0.975) in the full-adjusted model. Conclusion: The cross-sectional population based study demonstrates that standing height is a protective factor for physical disability among U.S. adults aged 60 years and older.
