Upper Cretaceous volcaniclastic deposits of the Haţeg Basin (Southern Carpathians, Romania), exposed around Densuş and Răchitova localities, are interpreted as three different eruptive sequences, the fragmentary record of multiple subaerial explosive-effusive volcanic eruptions of relatively long-lived stratovolcanoes. This volcanological study offers the first detailed description of the lithology and lithofacies of these deposits, with the aim of gaining an insight into the nature of the eruptive processes that led to their formation and, subsequently, into the dynamics of these Late Cretaceous volcanic eruptions. All types of volcanically-derived deposits have been identified in these volcaniclastic successions: primary, secondary, and epiclastic. Interbedded shales, which occur in the Densuş successions, were deposited during periods of volcanic repose, in a wetland. Lithological characteristics indicate that the volcaniclastic deposits were primarily produced by phreatomagmatic volcanism, possibly of Phreatoplinian type. The three successions were part of different composite volcanoes that likely formed a volcanic field near a coastal area. The largest part of the Haţeg Basin, including the outcropping area of the volcaniclastic deposits, forms the Haţeg Country UNESCO Global Geopark. As part of a UNESCO Geopark, these remnants of former volcanoes also have a geoheritage significance and despite their old age and poor exposure, can serve as an excellent location for community geoeducation. Although ancient volcanic features are usually underrated, scientific data derived from the study of such features can help identify important volcanic geoheritage elements. A more extensive use of these elements in the fields of geoeducation and geotourism can support the popularization and valorization of the Haţeg Country volcanoes and their significance in the geological history of this region. This study assessed the influence of sediment and water redistribution in host sediments on peperite formation by examining the peperites at the boundary between Cretaceous lacustrine sedimentary successions and intruding dikes (D1 and D2). The peperite zones occur along the dike margins and consist of fluidal juvenile fragments, classified as Type A and Type B perperite zones based on lateral extent of the peperite zones. Type A peperite zone, the dominant type, exhibites a narrow distribution (<20 cm), whereas Type B peperite zone sporadically occurs along D1 with a wider width (<1 m). Type B peperite zone is laterally linked with clastic dikes. These dikes containi fluidal shaped dike fragments with jigsaw-fit textures, indicating syn-magmatic fluidization and the resultant formation of the clastic dike via heat transfer. During dike emplacement, the interaction between the host sediments and the intruding magma formed Type A along the margins. Simultaneously, the clastic dikes, composed of fluidized sediments and water, supplied additional water and sediments, enhancing magma-host sediment intermingling and leading to the wide lateral extent of Type B. Our findings demonstrate that sediment and water redistribution via syn-magmatic fluidization is crucial in peperite formation, influencing the initial processes of phreatomagmatic volcanism. The Mount Grace metamorphosed carbonatites (Late Devonian) outcrop as thin (0.5–4 m), laterally discontinuous, strata-bound mappable lenses within the Monashee complex of the southeastern Canadian Cordillera. The host stratigraphic sequence (Monashee cover gneiss) was metamorphosed and deformed in the Late Cretaceous to early Eocene followed immediately by exhumation of the Frenchman Cap and Thor Odin domes. We present seven stratigraphic logs for Mount Grace carbonatites including new and previously described outcroppings spanning ∼30 km. The Mount Grace carbonatite units were deposited regionally within or near the top of a shallow marine sedimentary sequence within miogeoclinal strata of the western margin of paleo-North America (Laurentia). The distribution of the Mount Grace carbonatite lithofacies and the preserved depositional structures and textures suggest that these are pyroclastic deposits resulting from phreatomagmatic eruptions. Our new data enhance the volcanological story with an eruption scenario involving phreatomagmatic reactions and deposition from pyroclastic density currents, sourced from multiple centers within a field of monogenetic maar volcanoes. The distribution of the Mount Grace carbonatites parallel to the western margin of the paleo-North American continent correlates well with regional Late Devonian alkaline magmatism associated with development of an extensional back-arc basin. The eruption of Hunga volcano on 15 January 2022 produced a higher plume and faster-growing umbrella cloud than has ever been previously recorded. The plume height exceeded 58 km, and the umbrella grew to 450 km in diameter within 50 min. Assuming an umbrella thickness of 10 km, this growth rate implied an average volume injection rate into the umbrella of 330–500 km3 s−1. Conventional relationships between plume height, umbrella-growth rate, and mass eruption rate suggest that this period of activity should have injected a few to several cubic kilometers of rock particles (tephra) into the plume. Yet tephra fall deposits on neighboring islands are only a few centimeters thick and can be reproduced using ash transport simulations with only 0.1–0.2 km3 erupted volume (dense-rock equivalent). How could such a powerful eruption contain so little tephra? Here, we propose that seawater mixing at the vent boosted the plume height and umbrella growth rate. Using the one-dimensional (1-D) steady plume model Plumeria, we find that a plume fed by ~90% water vapor at a temperature of 100 °C (referred to here as steam) could have exceeded 50 km height while keeping the injection rate of solids low enough to be consistent with Hunga's modest tephra-fall deposit volume. Steam is envisaged to rise from intense phreatomagmatic jets or pyroclastic density currents entering the ocean. Overall, the height and expansion rate of Hunga's giant plume is consistent with the total mass of fall deposits plus underwater density current deposits, even though most of the erupted mass decoupled from the high plume. This example represents a class of high (> 10 km), ash-poor, steam-driven plumes, that also includes Kīlauea (2020) and Fukutoku-oka-no-ba (2021). Their height is driven by heat flux following well-established relations; however, most of the heat is contained in steam rather than particles. The Lamongan Volcanic Field (LVF), East Java, Indonesia, has experienced numerous maar eruptions, producing varied properties and morphologies of ash particles. This study conducted textural, morphometric, and geochemical analyses of the juvenile particles to elucidate the factors governing their heterogeneous characteristics. Two distinct types of juvenile ash were identified: A (black and brown ash) and B (orange-brown ash), reflecting different fragmentation processes. The blocky to slightly elongate shapes of juvenile A across heterogenous basaltic compositions (resulting in variable textures, rheological properties, and/or cooling histories) highlight the phreatomagmatic process as the primary control of their shape. In contrast, the irregular-fluidal shapes of juvenile B particles indicate magmatic fragmentation of basaltic andesite magma. This study reveals that variable magma properties yield diverse ash components, yet fragmentation dynamics govern pyroclast shapes in the LVF maar complex. Our integrated approach emphasizes the importance of considering multiple variables when interpreting heterogeneous volcanic ash deposits.

Using a multidisciplinary approach to understand the subsurface processes behind the formation of maar‐diatreme volcanoes is of growing interest. While geophysical characterization can visualize the diatreme and the feeding dike system beneath the volcano at a reasonable scale, such data are rare and generally unavailable. Stratigraphic‐controlled sampling and geochemical analysis of pyroclasts within the ejecta ring can, however, provide substantial information on dike evolution and the influence of the magmatic plumbing system on the growth of these volcanoes. Such investigation is presented here for the Barombi Mbo Maar (BMM), a complex maar of the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) composed of a pile of tephra units linked to multiple explosive phases that were grouped into three eruptive episodes. Major and trace element compositions of lavas collected from the different eruptive units indicate that the erupted magmas at BMM consist mainly of basalt, trachybasalt and basanite, with Oceanic Island Basalts (OIB) and high μ (μ = 238U/204Pb) (HIMU) signatures. Compositional modelling suggests that partial melting occurred at different degrees in the garnet‐to‐spinel transition zone from one episode to another. The repetition of eruptions with big gaps between them, the presence of another large adjacent old maar crater next to the 2.5 km crater of the BMM, and the overall similarity in geochemical compositions from one eruption to another suggest a deep high‐productive zone in the mantle beneath the BMM. Abstract Recent eruptions of the Shinmoedake volcano, Japan, have provided a valuable opportunity to investigate the transition between explosive and effusive eruptions. In October 2017, phreatic/phreatomagmatic explosions occurred. They were followed in March 2018 by a phase of hybrid activity with simultaneous explosions and lava flows and then a transition to intermittent, Vulcanian-style explosions. Evolution of surface phenomena, temporal variations of whole-rock chemical compositions from representative eruptive material samples, and rock microtextural properties, such as the crystallinity and crystal size distribution of juvenile products, are analyzed to characterize the eruption style transition, the conduit location, and the shallow magma conditions of the volcanic edifice. The 2017–2018 eruptive event is also compared with the preceding 2011 explosive–effusive eruption. The chemical and textural properties of the 2018 products (two types of pumice, ballistically ejected lava blocks, and massive lava) are representative of distinct cooling and magma ascent processes. The initial pumice, erupted during lava dome formation, has a groundmass crystallinity of up to 45% and the highest plagioclase number density of all products (1.9 × 106/mm3). Conversely, pumice that erupted later has the lowest plagioclase number density (1.2 × 105/mm3) and the highest nucleation density (23/mm4 in natural logarithm). This 2018 pumice is similar to the 2011 subplinian pumice. Therefore, it was likely produced by undegassed magma with a high discharge rate. Ballistics and massive lava in 2018 are comparable to the 2011 Vulcanian ballistics. Conversely, the high plagioclase number density pumice that occurred in 2018 was not observed during the 2011 eruption. Thus, such pumice might be specific to hybrid eruptions defined by small-scale explosions and lava dome formation with low magma discharge. The observed transitions and temporal variations of the activities and eruption style during the 2017–2018 Shinmoedake eruptions were primarily influenced by the ascent rate of andesitic magma and the geological structure beneath the summit crater. On the 15th of January 2022, a massive hydrovolcanic eruption at Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai in Tonga (SW Pacific) sent shockwaves in the near-field regime, close to the volcano. The far-field disturbances that encircled the globe were of a slower velocity. The most prominent disturbance was the Lamb wave, with the rest of the disturbances being a variety of gravity waves travelled around the globe and instantly became an international headline story. The eruption generated atmospheric pressure waves recorded multiple times across the globe, triggered a tsunami, and injected highly fragmented pyroclasts up to 55 km into the atmosphere. Enduring several hours, a series of individual large blasts generated an unprecedented lightning “show” recorded by the lightning detection networks, such as Vaisala. Consequences were devastating to the local community and the tsunami was felt across the Pacific and beyond. The impact of the eruption was truly global and comparable to the Krakatau 1883 eruption. A question we pose here is which geoheritage elements were created and preserved after the eruption. First reports confirmed that while fine ash was reported on land about 100 km from the source, most deposits were thin (mm-cm thick). This indicates that it is unlikely that any major section will be preserved, especially in the years following the event given the tropical setting. In addition, most of the ash fell into the Pacific Ocean, leaving no visible mark of this catastrophe. Unfortunately, the proximal region (e.g., the vent site) has also been destroyed, leaving only limited in-situ geoheritage elements likely to be accessible in the future. This poses a problem for human societal memory, as major catastrophic events in the collective memory of a community may only persist for a few decades, even when significant eruptive features may be preserved. Without “visible” geoheritage elements, this time will likely be much shorter. Geocultural elements (oral traditions or cultural activities) are likely to preserve and transmit information within the local communities for a longer period, but their accessibility and decoding may face difficulties in the absence of physically preserved evidence. Therefore, we consider it is important to trace and explore these geocultural elements through a mix of traditional and western approaches of community engaged activities. For example, the Pacific region has experienced several similar large-scale eruptions in historic times, and a few of them resulted in preserved geoheritage elements such as superb sections of the 1452–53 CE Kuwae eruption in Vanuatu. While these sites are locally known, their appearance and their geological context are not evidently and immediately considered as part of a major volcanic system, as they do not fit the common human perception of volcanoes as large conical mountains. Such visual perceptions do not align with the common near-sea level/shallow subaqueous caldera-dominated systems such as the location of the recent Tonga event. In achieving a better understanding in local communities of this type of geohazard, the geoheritage and geoeducation values of those rare geosites will increase significantly over time.

This paper provides information on the 2022 eruptive activity of Ebeko Volcano. Phreatic explosions had been occurring in the crater lake from January 22 to June 13 due to water seepage through a plug in the upper part of the magma conduit with subsequent boiling. Vulcanian type explosions started since June 14 and dried the lake. The ash particle-size distribution changed toward smaller sizes. Petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical studies of the tephra define this period as a phreatomagmatic eruption based on the presence of fresh juvenile material. Interaction between magma and waters of the Ebeko hydrothermal system results in its depletion in alkali and enrichment in silica. We hypothesize that the formation of amorphous water-bearing silica in the form of numerous segregations and its subsequent dehydration can favor the volcano's explosive activity. Explosive eruptions at basaltic volcanoes remain poorly understood. Kīlauea Volcano is a type locality for basaltic eruptions and is well-known for effusive activity. However, more than 7 m of phreatomagmatic Keanakākoʻi Tephra unit D deposits from explosive eruptions crown the southern rim of the summit caldera and provide a stark reminder of Kīlauea’s explosive past and future potential. We used detailed field observations as well as granulometric and morphological analysis of 100 samples from two proximal sections to assess the eruption style and fragmentation mechanism. The deposits can be divided into four subunits, six different lithofacies, and contain three juvenile tephra components. Each juvenile component shows distinct shape variability resulting from molten fuel-coolant interaction (MFCI) explosions of magma of variable vesicularity. Fragmentation of dense glass generates olive-green ash, fragmentation of low to moderately vesicular magma generates a dark gray ash-lapilli component, and fragmentation of highly vesicular magma generates light-yellow pumice. Our work shows that magma structure impacts MFCI explosion efficiency. Small-scale planar bedding throughout most of the deposit points to a general eruption style of small, frequent explosions generating low plumes. Thicker beds of accretionary lapilli of fine-extremely fine ash are related to very efficient magma-water mixing. Pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits in the upper part of the stratigraphy contain at least three flows but show no significant dune or cross-bedding structures. We suggest that this is a function of the vent being situated in a caldera that was then ∼600 m deep, where the caldera wall acted as a barrier and changed the flow dynamics to very dilute overspills and co-PDC plume falls over the wall. Deconvolution modeling of the polymodal grain size distributions is used to assess grain size changes of each juvenile component for this deposit, which greatly improves interpretation of lithofacies generation and eruption dynamics. Size-correlated shape parameters show that shape data across a wide size range are needed to accurately track grain shapes. This study demonstrates how careful examination of grain size and shape of juvenile tephra clasts can help volcanologists understand how effusive basaltic volcanoes can become violently explosive.

Hazard assessments in monogenetic volcanic fields require estimates of the runout of pyroclastic surges that result from phreatomagmatic explosive activity. Previous assessments used runout distances of 1–4 km, with large cases up to 6 km. Surge deposits at Ubehebe Crater (∼2100 y.b.p., Death Valley, California) have been traced ∼9 km from the crater center, and likely originally extended 1–3 km farther. There is no evidence that the Ubehebe Crater activity was unusually energetic; rather, its distal deposits are better preserved than those at most maar volcanoes because of its young age and the arid environment. Numerical simulations illustrate how low temperatures facilitate long runout of phreatomagmatic surges due to reduced expansion of entrained air compared to hot surges, allowing cool surges to retain higher densities than ambient air. We suggest that hazard assessments for volcanic fields with phreatomagmatic, maar‐forming eruptions should consider runout distances in the range of 10–15 km. Pre-mixing of magma and external water plays a key role in driving explosive phreatomagmatic and submarine volcanic eruptions. A thin film of water vapor forms at the magma–water interface as soon as hot magma comes in direct contact with the cold water (Leidenfrost effect). The presence of a stable vapor film drives efficient mixing and mingling between magma and water, as well as magma and wet and water-saturated sediments. Such mixing occurs before explosive molten fuel–coolant type interactions. Using high-temperature laboratory experiments, we investigate the effect of magma and water temperatures on the stability of vapor film, which has not been performed systematically for a magmatic heat source. The experiments were performed with re-melted volcanic rock material, from which spherically-shaped rock samples were produced. These samples were heated to 1,110°C and then submerged in a water pool with a constant temperature (3–93°C). The experiments were recorded on video, and, synchronously, sample and water temperatures were measured using thermocouples. The time-dependent thickness of the vapor film was measured from the video material. The vapor film tends to oscillate with time on the order of 102 Hz. We find that the vertical collapse rates of vapor films along the sample–water interfaces are 13.7 mm s−1 and 4.2 mm s−1 for water temperatures of 3.0°C and 65°C, respectively. For a given initial sample temperature, the thickness and stability time scales decrease with decreasing water temperature, which has implications for the efficiency of pre-mixing required for explosive eruptions. Using thermodynamics and previously measured material parameters, it is shown that a sudden collapse of the vapor film can start brittle fragmentation of the melt and thus serves as the starting point of thermohydraulic explosions.

The Garrotxa Volcanic Field is situated in the northeast region of the Iberian Peninsula. It represents the most recent volcanic area within the Catalan Volcanic Zone, which is one of the volcanic provinces of the European Rift System, featuring over 50 dispersed eruptive vents. This study presents a comprehensive morphometric analysis of volcanic edifices, aiming to enhance our understanding of both volcanostratigraphy and the geomorphology of landforms within the Garrotxa Volcanic Field. Our methodology involved extensive fieldwork and detailed analysis of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) to precisely determine the spatial distribution and morphometric parameters of the best-preserved volcanic structures in the area. The Garrotxa Volcanic Field exhibits an uneven spatial distribution of various volcanic landforms, with approximately 50 % comprising magmatic cones, primarily formed through Strombolian eruptions. The remaining 50 % is evenly divided between magmatic-phreatomagmatic volcanoes and phreatomagmatic tuff rings-maars. The morphometric characteristics of the three genetic types overlap significantly, showing no clear differences, although a few distinctions can sometimes be identified. The Garrotxa Volcanic Field displays a variety of eruption styles: 46 % of the identified eruptive sequences begin with phreatomagmatic activity, while 54 % start with predominantly magmatic explosive activity. Most eruptions show a transition through different phases. Data also indicate that the morphometric variability at the Garrotxa Volcanic Field stems from differences in the properties of pyroclastic sequences, resulting from their diverse eruption styles, as well as pre- and post-eruptive factors. Consequently, the results of the morphometric analysis are deemed insufficient for establishing a reliable chronology for the Garrotxa Volcanic Field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Maars are volcanic craters excavated by the interaction of magma and groundwater in subsurface phreatomagmatic explosions. Maar craters display a variety of shapes and sizes, but commonly display elongation. This paper explores the relationship between the orientation of maar elongation and regional stress indicators. The orientations of maar elongation, regional faults, and nearest neighbor lineaments containing maars were measured in seven volcanic fields: Auckland, Lamongan, Newer Volcanics Province, Pali Aike, Pinacate, San Pablo City, and Serdán Orientale. Common maar orientations were observed in several fields, and compared with faulting and nearest neighbor lineaments. It was found that the distribution of maars was commonly correlated with regional stress indicators (in lineaments), but the orientation of elongation of those maars did not always correlate with stress indicators. Maars not aligned with stress indicators were likely influenced by more local effects, including changes to the subsurface stress regime from the ongoing eruption.

Magma‐water interaction can dramatically influence the explosivity of volcanic eruptions. However, syn‐ and post‐eruptive diffusion of external (non‐magmatic) water into volcanic glass remains poorly constrained and may bias interpretation of water in juvenile products. Hydrogen isotopes in ash from the 2009 eruption of Redoubt Volcano, Alaska, record syn‐eruptive hydration by vaporized glacial meltwater. Both ash aggregation and hydration occurred in the wettest regions of the plume, which resulted in the removal and deposition of the most hydrated ash in proximal areas <50 km from the vent. Diffusion models show that the high temperatures of pyroclast‐water interactions (>400°C) are more important than the cooling rate in facilitating hydration. These observations suggest that syn‐eruptive glass hydration occurred where meltwater was entrained at high temperature, in the plume margins near the vent. Ash in the drier plume interior remained insulated from entrained meltwater until it cooled sufficiently to avoid significant hydration. Plain Language Summary: Explosive volcanic eruptions produce plumes of volcanic ash and gas that commonly mix with water from overlying seawater, glaciers, or hydrothermal systems. Within these plumes, volcanic glass (rapidly cooled magma) can lose its dissolved magmatic water or gain additional water from the surrounding environment. This study uses water concentrations in volcanic glass, and the hydrogen isotopes of that water, to identify if water was lost or gained in ash during the 2009 eruption of Redoubt Volcano, Alaska, USA. Results show that most of the magmatic water was lost, and some external water was gained in samples that fell closest to the volcano. Numerical models show that external water is most easily gained in glass at high temperatures even at the fastest cooling rates. These findings suggest external water was incorporated into the margins of the eruption plumes during the eruption. Ash hydration and aggregation occurred in these wet plume margins near the vent and preferentially deposited it closer to the vent. Ash in the hotter plume core that encounters water at cooler temperatures is erupted to higher altitudes and disperses the drier ash to further distances. This research presents an extensive inventory of 103 small-volume monogenetic phreatomagmatic volcanoes (PVs) along the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB), aiming to evaluate the influence of the external environmental parameters in phreatomagmatic volcanism. The formation of PVs (maar-diatremes, tuff rings, and tuff cones) is facilitated by the interaction of small volumes of magma and available water, conditions supported by frequent small-volume distributed volcanism and inter-montane lacustrine basins in the TMVB, a Plio-Quaternary continental volcanic arc with over 3000 monogenetic volcanic structures, of which only about 3% are PVs. The inventory was analyzed, dividing the structures into two groups based on their surface morphology: maar-diatremes and tuff rings (MD-TR, 81%), and tuff cones (TC, 19%). Morphometric correlations allow differentiation between these groups, although there is an overlap that could be caused by the presence of magmatic eruptive phases in some PVs. The type of aquifer host is the only environmental parameter with some discernible influence on the size of PVs. Most of the PVs are clustered in three specific areas: Valle de Santiago, Serdán-Oriental, and Los Tuxtlas. The PV clusters highlight the combinations of environmental parameters under which phreatomagmatism is most successful in terms of frequency and size. Less frequent sets of parameters are reflected in the scattered PVs. The magmatic flux, presumably low, is considered the first-degree influence on the conditions for a phreatomagmatic eruption, provided that there is water availability. This availability is determined by the local climate as second-degree influence and by the local hydrogeological configuration as third-degree. The hydrogeological configuration parameters involve the aquifer host, permeability, spatial distribution and hydraulic gradient. If these conditions, enhanced by a humid climate, facilitate the development of an extensive aquifer in an area of small-volume volcanism, it is more likely that a PV cluster will form. Phreatomagmatic eruptions in basaltic monogenetic volcanic fields are strongly influenced by their geological and environmental settings. Barriball Road volcano exemplifies the eruption processes associated with South Auckland Volcanic Field (SAVF), New Zealand. Stratigraphy and petrography reveal the complex eruptive history of this small-volume phreatomagmatic volcano. An initial phreatomagmatic phase formed two overlapping tuff rings from successive vents, and excavated lithics from a shell-rich Pliocene age aquifer (∼170 m depth). The first tuff ring was constructed mainly through pyroclastic fall and the second is dominated by pyroclastic surge (dilute pyroclastic density current) deposits. Transition to a terminal magmatic phase produced a nested scoria cone. Vent migration between the eruption of the tuff rings may have been induced by collapse of the soft substrate, restricting water and magma supply to the first vent. The Salares Norte (SN) Au–Ag belt is here defined as an Upper Miocene-Pliocene metallogenic area, extending for nearly 200 km, located NE of the northern end of the Upper Oligocene-Lower Miocene Maricunga Belt in the central Andes of northern Chile. The belt is located just east of the main reverse NS fault systems which are part of the Sierra Castillo, Potrerillos Mine and Claudio Gay Cordillera faults, limited to the north and south by the NW-striking oblique to the arc Imilac and Wheelwright-Incahuasi regional faults systems. The epithermal deposits within the SN belt are intimately associated with the occurrence of Middle Miocene volcaniclastic basins and Middle to Upper Miocene phreatomagmatic vents and their related high-sulfidation hydrothermal systems. The volcanostratigraphy of the SN epithermal belt comprises volcaniclastic sequences, subvolcanic and volcanic rocks ranging between the Lower Miocene and the Pliocene. High-angle NS reverse faults involving Paleozoic and lower Cenozoic units form the western-southwestern limit of the belt. Folded and faulted Middle Miocene volcaniclastic and volcanic sequences form the main host rock of at least 4 phreatomagmatic events that generated maar-diatreme fields and discrete maar vents, with their related subvolcanic facies, within the widespread Upper Cenozoic volcanic arc, ranging in age between ca. 15 and ca. 4 Ma. These four phreatomagmatic events are spatially and temporarily associated to 4 main high-sulfidation hydrothermal events which have altered both the phreatomagmatic rocks and the Cenozoic country rock of the explosive activity. These hydrothermal systems have formed dozens of discrete hydrothermally altered areas where argillic, advance argillic, silicification and steam-heated alteration are common. Most of the maar fields and the hydrothermal alteration systems are emplaced within a strike-slip tectonic regime with NE-trending shortening which is accommodated in the NW-striking sinistral-normal faults and NE-striking extension structures. These fault systems crosscutting interaction favor the hydrothermal fluid circulation and migration, as well as mineral precipitation on structural and/or primary lithological traps and on NE-striking tension cracks. In summary, the SN epithermal belt is an almost 200 km long and 60 km wide area, mainly NNE-oriented, where epithermal deposits have formed during the Upper Miocene and Pliocene (ca. 13-4 Ma), emplaced within Middle to Upper Miocene volcanic and volcaniclastic sequences associated to small volcanotectonic basins oriented in NS, NE-SW and NW-SE directions, in which most of the high-sulfidation systems are associated to discrete or repetitive structurally-controlled Upper Miocene-Pliocene phreatomagmatic vents and maar fields. • This paper defines a new Au–Ag epithermal belt in the Central Andes of northern Chile. • Novel results in terms of age, volcanic stratigraphyand hydrothermal alteration. • The relationships between Upper Cenozoic HS epithermal areas, local tectonics and phreatomagmatic volcanism are discussed. The 10th century Eldgjá fissure eruption is the largest in Iceland in historical time. It erupted 21.0 km3 of magma, with 1.3 km3 as tephra in at least 16 explosive episodes from subaerial and subglacial vents, producing magmatic and phreatomagmatic deposits respectively. Grain-size distributions for these end-members show distinct differences at comparable distances from source: the former are coarser and unimodal; the latter are finer and bimodal. These distributions appear to record different primary fragmentation histories. In contrast, the vesicle-size distributions of pyroclasts from each type of deposit show the pyroclasts underwent similar vesicle nucleation and growth prior to fragmentation. This indicates that the role of glacial water was comparatively late-stage, re-fragmenting an already disrupting magma by quench granulation. The presence of microlite-rich domains within clasts reveals a history of complex conduit evolution, during the transition from a continuous dyke to focussed, discrete vents.

During volcanic eruptions, the interaction of magma and groundwater can produce thermohydraulic explosions capable of significantly increasing the eruption energy. The most well-known mechanism by which explosive magma–water interactions occur, molten fuel–coolant interaction (MFCI), is a complex series of macro- and microscale processes which have been simulated using laboratory-scale experiments. As a natural analog for MFCI experiments, we utilize rootless cone beds formed by lava–water explosions to estimate explosion energy. The specific mechanical energy of the lava–water explosions studied here occurs over a broader range (4 to 178 kJ/kg) than MFCI experiments and includes estimates for the highest-energy lava–water explosions studied to date. Explosion energy is partitioned similarly over the two systems, with kinetic transport and fragmentation energy making up 25–40% and 42–80% of the mechanical energy, respectively, which overlap the ranges estimated for MFCI experiments. Our study of lava–water explosions therefore provides a field-scale analog of MFCI laboratory experiments for understanding the energetics, and therefore hazards, of MFCI in natural systems. Cenozoic geological evolution of New Zealand centres around the formation of Zealandia, a new continent that became detached from the eastern margin of Gondwana around 105 Ma. Spreading opened the Tasman Sea leaving a fragment of continental lithosphere, largely submerged, in the SW Pacific. Throughout the Cenozoic history, volcanism became an integral part of Zealandia. Continental lithosphere provided the basement for the volcanism, both onshore and offshore. Monogenetic volcanism was common throughout the Cenozoic. The availability of water was ubiquitous through surface water bodies (oceans and lakes) and various other terrestrial hydrous systems provided by the humid temperate climate of Zealandia. Hydrovolcanism, both explosive and non-explosive, has played a significant role in Zealandia's volcanic history resulting in volcano mega- architecture involving edifice geology and volcanic hazards. However, hydrovolcanism has commonly been overlooked in Zealandia's monogenetic volcanism context. Cenozoic monogenetic fields of Zealandia provide a unique laboratory and comparative analogy for other volcanic fields on Earth that are associated with low-lying terrestrial settings or shallow marine environments in a humid temperate climate. The Hopi Buttes volcanic field (HBVF) is located on the Colorado Plateau, Northern Arizona. In this Miocene volcanic field, the erosion level increases southward, allowing the study of maar-diatreme volcanoes from top (posteruptive crater infill and ejecta ring) to bottom (lower diatreme). The Twin Peaks volcanic complex consists mostly of two hills (North Peak and South Peak) with thick lavas at their summits and pyroclastic rocks underneath. In the HBVF, such volcanic remnants have received little scientific attention so far, despite their relative abundance. Our field observations allow us to interpret the North and South Peaks as remnants of two maar-diatreme volcanoes which evolved into lava lakes filling the craters. Within the complex, we distinguish four volcanic units (from unit 1 at the bottom to unit 4 at the top). On the basis of the field description of the deposits and the componentry measurements, we suggest that unit 1 is phreatomagmatic, unit 2 is phreato-strombolian (with mixed phreatomagmatic and strombolian characteristics), unit 3a is phreato-hawaiian (with mixed phreatomagmatic and hawaiian characteristics), unit 3b is hawaiian (formed by lava fountains) and unit 4 consists of lava lakes filling the maar craters. There is therefore a progressive evolution from a purely phreatomagmatic eruptive style, which excavated the craters and diatremes and partly filled them, to magmatic explosive to nonexplosive eruptive styles, which filled the maar craters up to the pre-eruptive surface. The 2016–2017 shallow submarine eruption of Bogoslof volcano in Alaska injected plumes of ash and seawater to maximum heights of ~ 12 km. More than 4550 volcanic lightning strokes were detected by the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) and Vaisala's Global Lightning Dataset (GLD360) over 9 months. Lightning assisted monitoring efforts by confirming ash-producing explosions in near-real time, but only 32 out of the 70 explosive events produced detectable lightning. What led to electrical activity within some of the volcanic plumes, but not others? And why did the lightning intensity wax and wane over the lifetime of individual explosions? We address these questions using multiparametric observations from ground-based lightning sensors, satellite imagery, photographs, acoustic signals, and 1D plume modeling. Detailed time-series of monitoring data show that the plumes did not produce detectable lightning until they rose higher than the atmospheric freezing level (approximated by − 20 °C temperatures). For example, on 28 May 2017 (event 40), the delayed onset of lightning coincides with modeled ice formation in upper levels of the plume. Model results suggest that microphysical conditions inside the plume rivaled those of severe thunderstorms, with liquid water contents > 5 g m−3 and vigorous updrafts > 40 m s−1 in the mixed-phase region where liquid water and ice coexist. Based on these findings, we infer that 'thunderstorm-style' collisional ice-charging catalyzed the volcanic lightning. However, charge mechanisms likely operated on a continuum, with silicate collisions dominating electrification in the near-vent region, and ice charging taking over in the upper-level plumes. A key implication of this study is that lightning during the Bogoslof eruption provided a reliable indicator of sustained, ash-rich plumes (and associated hazards) above the atmospheric freezing level. Abstract This article documents textures within basaltic Katla 1918 pyroclasts, where particle-filled fractures and bubbles have been observed. These features are analogous to tuffisite veins; particle-filled fractures which represent the preserved remains of transient degassing pathways in shallow conduits. Such fractures have long been considered restricted to high viscosity silicic melts. However, through BSE images and compositional maps, we have identified similar tuffisite-like features in crystal-poor basalt pyroclasts from the 1918 CE subglacial eruption of Katla, Iceland (K1918). Clast textures record transient mobility of juvenile/lithic particles, melt droplets and gas through magmatic fractures and connected vesicles. Key evidence includes (1) the presence of variably sintered fine-ash particles within variably healed fractures and vesicles (present in >80% of clasts analysed), (2) compositional maps that reveal the presence of foreign particles within preserved and healed permeable pathways, and (3) lower vesicularities immediately surrounding 'fracture' walls, suggestive of diffusive volatile loss into a permeable network. The 1918 CE eruption of Katla occurred under a thick glacier, however the ice was quickly breached, owing partly to the explosive nature of the eruption. We propose that the formation and preservation of these transient permeable networks have been facilitated by rapid decompression of a relatively volatile-rich magma, in a confined subglacial environment, with combined magmatic and phreatomagmatic fragmentation, followed by rapid quenching by meltwater. Tuffisite veins in rhyolite demonstrate repeated fracture-healing cycles, which drive incremental release of overpressured gas and help to defuse explosive eruptions. Interestingly, the permeable network at Katla failed to defuse the 1918 CE eruption, which involved a particularly violent subglacial eruptive phase. It is unclear whether this demonstrates an inability of mafic tuffisite-like features to efficiently degas magma (perhaps owing to the especially transient nature of permeable pathways in low viscosity magmas) or an ability to enhance fragmentation by providing infiltration pathways for external water. The latter scenario may explain the rapid melting of the overlying glacier as the large surface area-to-volume ratio of fractured magma would allow rapid heat transfer. Nevertheless, we document a previously unrecognised texture in basaltic magmas. It is intriguing why it has not, to the best of our knowledge, been documented elsewhere. Have these permeable pathways been overlooked in the past (e.g. mistaken for bad sample preparation or not noticed without high magnification BSE images) and are in fact a widespread phenomenon in subglacial (and other?) basalts; or do our samples in fact represent a rarely preserved texture? Either way, they offer a new insight into the degassing and fragmentation of subglacial basalt. The area known as the Lānaʻi Lookout has Oʻahu's youngest and best exposures of deposits from pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), generated by explosions involving magma-water interaction. This work presents the first detailed facies analysis of the deposits at the Lānaʻi Lookout, fundamental to understanding the explosion dynamics, post-fragmentation transport and depositional processes, and to unravel the eruptive history. The lithofacies identified include planar-bedded, low-angle, and megaripple, cross-bedded ash to lapilli, accretionary lapilli-rich falls and isolated ballistic blocks and bombs. These features are interpreted as generated by mostly dilute PDCs, co-PDC fall and sedimentation from eruptive clouds and ballistic-charged jets. Overall, at least four eruptive stages formed the pyroclastic succession: (i) frequent, brief explosions from Kahauloa and Koko craters, producing fallout deposits and ballistics; (ii) a dominant stage of sustained passing to short-lived production of PDCs from Kahauloa crater, followed by a short break in volcanic activity; (iii) return of explosive activity dominated by fallout deposits likely sourced at Kahauloa; (iv) intermittent PDCs from Kahauloa alternating with debris flows coming down Koko Crater flanks. This stage is followed by lava flow emplacement that marked the end of the explosive eruptions at the Koko Rift system. In summary, the lithofacies analysis and stratigraphic relations of this complex multi-vent system informs on the dynamics, eruptive style, and frequency of eruptions of the late-stage volcanism on Oʻahu. • Detailed volcanological analysis of Oʻahu's youngest phreatomagmatic deposits. • Use of ballistic blocks and megarriples orientations for PDC deposits as source indicators, providing evidence for alternation or contemporaneity of eruptive centers. • Data provides a better understanding of eruption dynamics of complex, overlapping, muti-vent, late-stage Hawaiian volcanism. At Kawah Ijen (Indonesia), vigorous SO2 and HCl degassing sustains a hyperacid lake (pH ~0) and intensely alters the subsurface, producing widespread residual silica and advanced argillic alteration products. In 1817, a VEI 2 phreatomagmatic eruption evacuated the lake, depositing a widespread layer of muddy ash fall, and sending lahars down river drainages. We discovered multiple types of opaline silica in juvenile low-silica dacite pumice and in particles within co-erupted laharic sediments. Most spectacular are opal-replaced phenocrysts of plagioclase and pyroxene adjacent to pristine matrix glass and melt inclusions. Opal-bearing pumice has been found at numerous sites, including where post-eruption infiltration of acid water is unlikely. Through detailed analyses of an initial sampling of 1817 eruption products, we find evidence for multiple origins of opaline materials in pumice and laharic sediments. Evidently, magma encountered acid-altered materials in the subsurface and triggered phreatomagmatic eruptions. Syn-eruptive incorporation of opal-alunite clasts, layered opal, and fragment-filled vesicles of opal and glass, all suggest magma-rock interactions in concert with vesiculation, followed by cooling within minutes. Our experiments at magmatic temperature confirm that the opaline materials would show noticeable degradation in time periods longer than a few tens of minutes. Some glassy laharic sedimentary grains are more andesitic than the main pumice type and may represent older volcanic materials that were altered beneath the lake bottom and were forcefully ejected during the 1817 eruption. A post-eruptive origin remains likely for most of the opal-replaced phenocrysts in pumice. Experiments at 25°C and 100°C reveal that when fresh pumice is bathed in Kawah Ijen hyperacid fluid for 6 weeks, plagioclase is replaced without altering either matrix glass or melt inclusions. Moreover, lack of evidence for high-temperature annealing of the opal suggests that post-eruption alteration of pumice is more likely than pre-eruption envelopment of euhedral opal-replaced phenocrysts in dacitic melt. At Ijen and elsewhere, the ascent of magma into hydrous acid-altered mineral assemblages (e.g., opal, kaolinite, alunite) could induce rapid dehydration of hydrous minerals and amorphous materials, generating considerable steam and contributing to magmatic-hydrothermal and phreatomagmatic explosions.

Recent work is changing our understanding of phreatomagmatic maar-diatreme eruptions and resulting deposits. In previous models, explosions were often inferred to take place only at the base of a diatreme, with progressive downward migration due to a cone of depression in the host aquifer. However, diatremes themselves contain much water that is heterogeneously distributed, and field evidence supports the existence of explosion sites at many vertical and lateral locations within them. Crater sizes have been used to estimate explosion energies, but this only works for single-explosion craters where the depth of explosion is independently known, and has limited value for multi-explosion maar-diatremes. Deep-seated lithic clasts in tephra ring beds have been taken to indicate the depth of the explosion that produced that bed. However, only relatively shallow explosions actually vent to the surface, and deep-seated lithics are gradually brought to shallow depths through step-wise mixing of multiple subsurface explosions. Grain-size of tephra-ring deposits is often inferred to indicate fragmentation efficiency. However, other factors strongly influence deposit grain size, including the scaled depth of an explosion and the interaction of an erupting jet with topography around a vent (e.g., crater), along with long recognized effects of mechanical properties of host rocks and recycling within the vent/diatreme. These insights provide a foundation for future research into this important volcano type.

Hydrovolcanism is a type of volcanism where magma and water interact either explosively or non-explosively. The less frequently used term, hydromagmatism, includes all the processes responsible for magma and water interaction in a magmatic system. Hydrovolcanism is commonly used as a synonym for phreatomagmatism. However, in recent years phreatomagmatism appears more in association with volcanic eruptions that occur in shallow subaqueous or terrestrial settings and commonly involves molten fuel-coolant interaction (MFCI) driven processes. Here a revised and reviewed classification scheme is suggested on the basis of the geo-environment in which the magma-water interaction takes place and the explosivity plus mode of energy transfer required to generate kinetic energy to produce pyroclasts. Over the past decade researchers have focused on the role hydrovolcanism/phreatomagmatism plays in the formation of maar craters, the evolution of diatremes and the signatures of magma—water interaction in the geological record. In the past five years, lithofacies-characterization is the most common approach to studying hydrovolcanism. By far mafic monogenetic volcanic fields generated the greatest number of research results. Significant knowledge gaps are identified, especially in developing tools to identify the textural signatures hydrovolcanism leave behind on eruptive products and exploring the role of hydrovolcanism in the growth of intermediate and silicic small volume volcanoes.

http://dx.doi.org/10.17014/ijog.vol4no3.20094The Batur Caldera, in the northeastern part of Bali Island, is an elliptical collapse structure 13.8 by 10 km in size and another circular composite collapse structure with a diameter of 7.5 km in its centre. Two stages of the collapse were interrupted by silicic andesite lavas and domes. The first collapse was initiated by the eruption of about 84 km3 of the dacitic "Ubud Ignimbrite", about 29,300 years B.P., which caused a steep-walled depression about 1 km deep. The second ignimbrite was erupted from a large crater about the present lake, and it produced about 19 km3 of a similar voluminous dacitic ignimbrite, called the "Gunungkawi Ignimbrite" about 20,150 years B.P. This second eruption trig- gered a second collapse, which created the central circular caldera, and formed a basin structure. Both the Ubud and Gunungkawi Ignimbrites consist of a similar dacitic composition, white to red (the most abundant nearly 90 %) and dark grey to black dacitic pumice clasts. The large clasts, up to 20 cm in diameter, are in the non-welded ignimbrite, particularly in the upper part of the Gunungkawi Ignimbrite. The intracaldera ignimbrite, called the "Batur Ignimbrite" about 5 km3 in volume is a densely welded ignimbrite and generally shows typical welded features. The ignimbrite comprises at least five different flow units, separated by thin (15 - 40 cm) welded pumiceous airfall deposits, with flattened pumice clasts. Another large eruption occurred about 5,500 years B.P., producing around 0.09 km3 andesitic ignimbrite. This was initiated by phreatomagmatic eruptions, indicated by thick phreatomagmatic and surge deposits, underlying the ignimbrite. The caldera and its vicinity are partly filled, and variably mantled by later eruptive products of dacitic and andesitic phreatomagmatic and airfall deposits.

Extensive drilling in the NW part of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin carried out within groundwater exploration provided core material from boreholes 4630_B and 4650_A. Both locations (Fig. 1) are situated in the Lužice sub-basin, dominated by coarse-grained siliciclastic deposits, mainly quartzose sandstones. In both cores, loose rusty-stained sandstones were described (Fig. 4). An apparent contrast to the wallrock (compact quartzose and argillaceous sandstones) allowed their distinction as a new facies that was tentatively labelled as a dyke fill. In thin sections, besides ubiquitous rounded quartz grains, several types of "exotic" fragments were identified. These include rare lithic grains of volcanic origin, namely scoria fragments (Fig. 8) and porphyric basaltic rocks (Fig. 9), wood fragments up to 3.5 mm long (Figs 10, 12), slightly altered clasts of mudstones (Fig. 11), and fine accumulations of iron hydroxides up to 2 mm in size. Furthermore, some quartz grains exhibit obvious sharp pressure cracking. This probably results from explosive brecciation of Cretaceous (Cenomanian-Turonian) sandstones, their contamination with "exotic" material transported from underlying strata and subsequent redeposition as an explosive pipe fill. In case of volcanic rock fragments, it is not clear whether they originated as juvenile material or by destruction of the older volcanic structures. The facies is genetically attributed to either phreatic or phreatomagmatic process. The absence of silica cement precipitated from hydrothermal fluids indicates that explosive process was driven strictly by hydrothermal gases. Explosions were triggered either directly by the intrusion of hot magma into porous, meteoric water-saturated Cretaceous sandstones, or indirectly by the magmatic heat released into the aquifer. Since it is impossible to determine the exact nature of the process (phreatic/phreatomagmatic), we have decided to use the term "explosive breccias" for this facies. The depth of formation of both pipe fills is inferred to ca. 200-300 m under the palaeosurface. This is supported by the presence of unusual coniferous wood fragments that may have been transported from the surface by early post-explosive circulation of suspended brecciated material, as long as similar plant fossils are not known from underlying Cretaceous strata. Such process was proved in similar structure in the town of Jáchymov in the Krušné hory Mts. Based on borehole data, the spatial extent and dimensions of the explosive pipes cannot be estimated. Although in previous years this facies was described neither in outcrop (sensitive to weathering) nor in core (prone to core loss), we assume that it could be more frequent than expected. A sequence of late Holocene eruptions from the Ubehebe Crater cluster in Death Valley was short-lived, emplacing several phreatomagmatic and magmatic deposits. Seven craters form the main group, which erupted along a north-south alignment 1.5 km long. At least five more make a 500-m east-west alignment west of the main crater group. One more is an isolated shallow crater ~ 400 m south of that alignment. All erupted through Miocene fanglomerate and sandstone, which are now distributed as comminuted matrix and lithic clasts in all Ubehebe deposits. Stratigraphic evidence showing that all Ubehebe strata were emplaced within a short time interval includes: (1) deposits from the many Ubehebe vents make a multi-package sequence that conformably drapes paleo-basement topography with no erosive gullying between emplacement units; (2) several crater rims that formed early in the eruptive sequence are draped smoothly by subsequent deposits; and (3) tack-welded to agglutinated spatter and bombs that erupted at various times through the sequence remained hot enough to oxidize the overlying youngest emplacement package. In addition, all deposits sufficiently consolidated to be drilled yield reliable paleomagnetic directions, with site mean directions showing no evidence of geomagnetic secular variation. Chemical analyses of juvenile components representing every eruptive package yield a narrow range in major elements [SiO 2 (48.65–50.11); MgO (4.98–6.23); K 2 O (2.24–2.39)] and trace elements [Rb (28–33); Sr (1513–1588); Zr (373–404)]. Despite lithologic similarities, individual fall units can be traced outward from vent by recording layer thicknesses, maximum scoria and lithic sizes, and juvenile clast textural variations. This permits reconstruction of the eruptive sequence, which produced a variety of eruptive styles. The largest and northernmost of the craters, Ubehebe Crater, is the youngest of the group. Its largely phreatomagmatic deposits drape all of the others, thicken in paleogullies and thin over several newly created crater rims. We discuss maar-diatremes and calderas as end-members on a spectrum of negative volcanic landforms (depressions) produced by explosive eruptions (note – we focus on calderas formed during explosive eruptions, recognizing that some caldera types are not related to such activity). The former are dominated by ejection of material during numerous discrete phreatomagmatic explosions, brecciation, and subsidence of diatreme fill, while the latter are dominated by subsidence over a partly evacuated magma chamber during sustained, magmatic volatile-driven discharge. Many examples share characteristics of both, including landforms that are identified as maars but preserve deposits from non-phreatomagmatic explosive activity, and ambiguous structures that appear to be coalesced maars but that also produced sustained explosive eruptions with likely magma reservoir subsidence. A convergence of research directions on issues related to magma-water interaction and shallow reservoir mechanics is an important avenue toward developing a unified picture of the maar-diatreme-caldera spectrum.

Volcanic rootless cones are the products of thermohydraulic explosions involving rapid heat transfer from active lava (fuel) to external sources of water (coolant). Rootless eruptions are attributed to molten fuel-coolant interactions (MFCIs), but previous studies have not performed systematic investigations of rootless tephrostratigraphy and grain-size distributions to establish a baseline for evaluating relationships between environmental factors, MFCI efficiency, fragmentation, and patterns of tephra dispersal. This study examines a 13.55-m-thick vertical section through an archetypal rootless tephra sequence, which includes a rhythmic succession of 28 bed pairs. Each bed pair is interpreted to be the result of a discrete explosion cycle, with fine-grained basal material emplaced dominantly as tephra fall during an energetic opening phase, followed by the deposition of coarser-grained material mainly as ballistic ejecta during a weaker coda phase. Nine additional layers are interleaved throughout the stratigraphy and are interpreted to be dilute pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits. Overall, the stratigraphy divides into four units: unit 1 contains the largest number of sediment-rich PDC deposits, units 2 and 3 are dominated by a rhythmic succession of bed pairs, and unit 4 includes welded layers. This pattern is consistent with a general decrease in MFCI efficiency due to the depletion of locally available coolant (i.e., groundwater or wet sediments). Changing conduit/vent geometries, mixing conditions, coolant and melt temperatures, and/or coolant impurities may also have affected MFCI efficiency, but the rhythmic nature of the bed pairs implies a periodic explosion process, which can be explained by temporary increases in the water-to-lava mass ratio during cycles of groundwater recharge. Rootless cones form when partially outgassed lava interacts explosively with external water. The explosions represent an end-member system that can elucidate mechanisms of explosive magma-water interactions in the absence of magmatic fragmentation induced by outgassing. The proportion of finely fragmented ejecta (i.e., ash), generated in rootless explosions, may contribute significantly to the energy of the explosion even if the ash volume is small relative to coarser ejecta. Laboratory experiments indicate that the degree of melt-water mixing and energy release are proportional to the abundance of blocky grains, fragmented by brittle disintegration, which effectively contribute thermal energy to the system. To constrain the mechanisms and dynamics of rootless explosive activity, we assess the nature and modes of fragmentation and ejecta characteristics through morphological, textural, and density analysis of rootless tephra associated with a pāhoehoe lava flow in a lacustrine (lake basin) environment. We observe strong correlations between the mean grain size and the mass percentage of both blocky (negative power law trend) and fluidal (positive logarithmic) tephra clasts of all sizes. We interpret these trends as scale-dependent fragmentation behavior due to the decreasing efficacy of hydrodynamic fragmentation as it occurs over finer scales, especially over the ash size range. Additionally, all analyzed beds contain fine ash-sized blocky and mossy clasts, which are thought to be diagnostic of a high transfer rate of thermal to mechanical energy, characteristic of molten fuel-coolant interactions. These results agree with a recent model of rootless cone formation, prior fragmentation theory, and scaled laboratory experiments and therefore provide a field-based analog for future experimental and modeling efforts. Zuni Salt Lake (ZSL) is a large maar in the Red Hill-Quemado volcanic field located in west-central New Mexico in the southwestern USA. Stratigraphic analysis of sections in and around the maar, coupled with optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) C dating, indicate that ZSL volcanic activity occurred between ∼13.4 and 9.9 ka and was most likely confined to a ≤500-year interval sometime between ∼12.3 and 11.0 ka. The basal volcanic unit consists of locally widespread basaltic ash fallout interpreted to represent a violent or wind-aided strombolian eruption tentatively attributed to Cerro Pomo, a scoria cone ∼10 km south of ZSL. Subsequent eruptions emanated from vents near or within the present-day ZSL maar crater. Strombolian eruptions of multiple spatter and scoria cones produced basaltic lava and scoria lapilli fallout. Next, a phreatomagmatic eruption created the maar crater and surrounding tephra rim and apron. ZSL eruptions ended with strombolian eruptions that formed three scoria cones on the crater floor. The revised age range of ZSL is younger and more precise than the 190-24 ka 2-sigma age range derived from previous argon dating. This implies that other morphologically youthful, argon-dated volcanoes on the southern margin of the Colorado Plateau might be substantially younger than previously reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The initial eruptive episodes of explosive eruptions are classified as phreatic if the amount of juvenile material (scoria, glass, pumice) is null, and the amount of fresh accidental lithics, and hydrothermally altered lithics, is substantial. Phreatic eruptions have been in some cases recognized as precursory events preceding phreatomagmatic and magmatic eruptive phases. Usually, the lithological features of tephra deposits are investigated and sampled in the field. Investigation of ash samples under binocular microscope or by Back-Scattered Electron (BSE) microscope images of polished sections is usually considered sufficient to typify the fragmentation mechanism of the eruption. The opening eruptive phases at Turrialba volcano, together with the formation of new intracraters (i.e. 2010, 2012, 2014) and the enlargement of the Western Crater (29 October 2014 to present), were classified, in previous papers and internal reports as phreatic. We studied a series of ash samples erupted from 2010 to 2016, with the aim of understanding the fragmentation processes characterizing the vent opening phases. We used SEM + EDS analyses, in addition to field and microscopic investigation. Results showed a composition of accidental lithics of fresh to hydrothermally altered clasts and secondary minerals (82–98%), besides juvenile andesite fragments (2–18%), which leads us to revisit the classification of the initial eruptive phases of Turrialba as phreatomagmatic. Our method allowed the detection of a juvenile component directly involved in an effective magma-water interaction, which was possible only by a scrutinous examination of the glass surface textures by SEM in the range size between 3 and 3.5 phi. We recommend such a type of investigation when the identification of fresh magma in a new eruption is crucial for the preparedness and hazard evaluation at active volcanoes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 28,300 year BP (cal 32,300 BP) El Caracol tuff cone complex is one of the few phreatomagmatic volcanoes in the scoria-cone dominated Plio-Quaternary Michoacán-Guanajuato Volcanic Field (MGVF). It displays a shallow circular crater of ~ 1 km in diameter that is filled with several meter-thick lava flows and is located between two NE–SW trending normal faults dipping NW. It lies directly on top of Pliocene lavas of the San Lorenzo shield volcano that forms part of a tectonic horst (topographic high) separating the Zacapu lake basin (1980 m) in the south from the Río Angulo river valley (1760 m) to the north. Detailed study of the tephra sequence indicates that the eruption occurred in two stages: 1) Weak phreatomagmatic , in which about 0.1–0.5 km 3 dense rock equivalent (DRE) of magma was issued within ~ 1 to 3 months at the rate of 4–40 m 3 /s, and 2) purely magmatic ( Strombolian-effusive ) during which the vent shifted slightly its position toward the NW, forming a small scoria cone (~ 100 m high) on the crater rim of the tuff cone. From this scoria cone lava flows were issued, first into the tuff cone crater occupying its bottom, and subsequently toward the NW, down the outer flank of the tuff cone and into the plain, where they reached a distance of ~ 3.5 km. During this stage ~ 0.6 km 3 DRE of magma was produced at the rate of ~ 4 m 3 /s in a period of ~ 5 months. Although El Caracol displays many features that are characteristic for a phreatomagmatic vent, its morphology, types of deposits, and its complex process of formation makes it strikingly different from the more typical case of the ~ 21,000 year BP (cal 25,300 BP) Alberca de Guadalupe maar volcano, situated not far at the SE margin of the Zacapu basin. The latter was solely phreatomagmatic during the course of its eruption and is formed in its entirety by surge and fallout breccias consisting largely of xenolithic material. In contrast, at El Caracol the hydrogeological environment (namely the low groundwater flow gradient) did not allow for sustained water/magma interactions at ideal conditions (ratio of 0.2). Hence, the system soon dried out due to insufficient groundwater flow toward the eruption site and the eruption turned purely magmatic. This study shows that despite of its proximity to a large water reservoir (Zacapu lake basin) and similarities with Alberca de Guadalupe maar in regard to age, climate, magma composition, and tectonic environment, several other specific parameters play a crucial role in shaping a monogenetic phreatomagmatic volcano. The case of El Caracol (phreatomagmatic style followed by magmatic during the course of a monogenetic eruption) has been reported from other volcanic fields around the globe where it might have similar causes. Furthermore, the general scarcity of this type of volcanoes in the Michoacán–Guanajuato Volcanic Field implies that the conditions required for their formation are rarely met in this region. Deposit volume is a critical factor for reconstructing an explosive eruption. Volume estimate models typically used for large Plinian deposits have been adapted and improved repeatedly over the last few decades. Less work has been done to refine a method for estimating the volume from smaller deposits produced by discrete phreatic and phreatomagmatic explosions. The characterization of the volume and distribution of deposits is required to quantify the physical hazards presented by different explosion types and develop appropriate models of future eruptions. Six classic tephra volume models were assessed using a dataset from subsurface explosion experiments. The models typically did a poor job modelling the volume of proximal deposits as a component of total deposit volume of discrete explosion deposits. Models reproduced medial and distal deposit volumes with greater success, particularly the Exponential model and a more recent Linear Regression model. It is therefore recommended, when possible, to use digital elevation models produced from GPS or laser-based methods to characterize proximal deposits separately and to use tephra volume estimates for medial and distal deposits. Additionally, this dataset enabled the comparison of ejecta volumes with crater diameters and highlighted that this relationship only holds for simple crater scenarios without any lateral vent migration, collapse or erosion of the crater under study. The assessment and improvement of these methods are required to ensure accurate deposit volumes as they serve as one of the most important inputs to hazard assessments and numerical models.
