Supramolecular complexation between photoresponsive azobenzene chromophores and a photopassive polymer host offers synthetic and design advantages compared with conventional covalent azo-containing polymers. In this context, it is important to understand the impact of the strength of the supramolecular interaction on the optical response. Herein, we study the effect of hydrogen-bonding strength between a photopassive polymer host [poly(4-vinylpyridine), or P4VP] and three azobenzene analogues capable of forming weaker (hydroxyl), stronger (carboxylic acid), or no H-bonding with P4VP. The hydroxyl-functionalized azo forms complete H-bonding complexation up to equimolar ratio with VP, whereas the COOH-functionalized azo reaches only up to 30% H-bond complexation due to competing acid dimerization that leads to partial phase separation and azo crystallization. We show that the stronger azo-polymer H-bonding nevertheless provides higher photoinduced orientation and better performance during optical surface patterning, in terms of grating depth and diffraction efficiency, when phase separation is either avoided altogether or is limited by using relatively low azo contents. These results demonstrate the importance of the H-bonding strength on the photoresponse of azopolymer complexes, as well as the need to consider the interplay between different intermolecular interactions that can affect complexation., La complexation supramoléculaire entre des chromophores azobenzéniques photosensibles et un hôte polymérique photopassif offre des avantages sur le plan de la synthèse et de la conception par rapport aux polymères azoïques covalents classiques. Dans ce contexte, il importe de comprendre les effets de la force des interactions supramoléculaires sur la réponse optique. Dans le cadre des présents travaux, nous avons étudié l’effet de la force des liaisons hydrogène entre un hôte polymérique photopassif — la poly(4-vinylpyridine), ou P4VP – et trois analogues azobenzéniques capables de former des liaisons hydrogène faibles (hydroxyle) ou fortes (acide carboxylique) avec la P4VP, ou de ne former aucune liaison hydrogène. Les composés azoïques hydroxylés se complexent entièrement par liaisons hydrogène avec la VP, la complexation atteignant un rapport équimolaire, tandis que les composés azoïques carboxylés n’atteignent qu’un taux de complexation par liaisons hydrogène de 30%. Ce dernier résultat est attribuable à la dimérisation de l’acide, qui entre en compétition, entraînant une séparation de phases partielle et la cristallisation du composé azoïque. Nous démontrons que les liaisons hydrogène plus fortes avec le polymère azoïque permettent néanmoins une orientation photo-induite plus importante et une meilleure performance durant le modelage optique de la surface, notamment en ce qui concerne la profondeur du réseau et l’efficacité de diffraction, lorsque la séparation de phases est évitée complètement ou limitée par l’utilisation de quantités relativement faibles de composé azoïque. Ces résultats démontrent l’influence de la force des liaisons hydrogène sur la photosensibilité des complexes de polymères azoïques de même que la nécessité de prendre en compte l’interrelation entre les différentes interactions intermoléculaires qui peuvent intervenir dans la complexation.

Two sequential transformations of the orientational structure in nematic liquid crystal droplets containing a dendrimer additive (nanosized macromolecules with light-absorbing azobenzene terminal moieties) under light irradiation in the UV–blue spectral range were investigated. The origin of these transitions is in the change of the boundary conditions due to photoisomerization of the dendrimer adsorbed onto the liquid crystal–glycerol interface. It was shown that the photoisomerization processes of dendrimer molecules in a liquid crystal are accompanied by a spatial rearrangement of their azobenzene moieties, which is the key point in the explanation of the observed effects.

One of the key challenges of material science currently is the design of multifunctional “smart” materials combining features from both molecular and supramolecular levels. Pursuing the strategy of amplification and transduction of light-induced motion of small molecules (photoswitches) across increasing length scales to macroscopic level, a novel polymer composite based on shape-reconfigurable microparticles is designed. The composite represents soft elastic matrix filled with photoactive microparticles of liquid crystal (LC) polymer bearing azobenzene moieties. Illumination of the composite film with polarized light results in a dramatic deformation of the microparticles such that the initially spherical shape becomes elongated along the direction of light polarization. This shape-shifting of particles is fully reversible and can be achieved by annealing or exposure to nonpolarized light. It is shown that photodeformation of particles is accompanied by photo-orientation of LC molecules and both processes can be controlled independently. The practical relevance of such materials is pointed out by the possibility to control optical properties (birefringence and light scattering) and optomechanical feedback yielding a new class of photoactuators. Overall, the developed material containing microscopic polymer photoactuators demonstrates an effective way of transducing molecular operation towards macroscopic functionality and can be particularly useful for optics and soft-robotics.

Les complexes supramoléculaires dans lesquels un azobenzène photoactif est lié de manière non-covalente à un polymère représentent des alternatives simples, économiques et flexibles par rapport aux matériaux photosensibles traditionnels de type azopolymères à chaînes latérales. La photoisomérisation rapide et réversible des azobenzènes permet d'exercer un contrôle externe efficace des propriétés du matériau hôte et peut donner lieu à des déplacements moléculaires à grande échelle, tels que le transport de masse macroscopique photoinduit sous illumination par de la lumière polarisée. Les phénomènes induits par la lumière dans les azomatériaux offrent un grand potentiel dans divers domaines d’application allant de la photonique à la biologie. Les matériaux supramoléculaires photosensibles sont souvent basés sur des liaisons hydrogène mais l'utilisation des liaisons ioniques entre des composés de charges opposées est également une approche supramoléculaire intéressante pour concevoir des complexes azopolymères. Dans ce mémoire, les assemblages supramoléculaires du poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) photopassif et de son dérivé quaternisé (P4VPMe) sont liés par des liaisons hydrogène et ioniques à de petites molécules photoactives analogues, respectivement le 4-hydroxy-4’-diméthylamino- azobenzène (azoOH) et l'orange de méthyle (MO), qui présente un groupement sulfonate à la place de la fonction OH. Ces complexes photoactifs sont étudiés avec les objectifs suivants : 1. Comprendre l'effet du type d'interaction sur les propriétés photoinduites des azocomplexes, en particulier leur orientation moléculaire et l’efficacité de diffraction de leurs réseaux de relief de surface (SRG). 2. Déterminer le rôle de la masse molaire du polymère (5,2 kg/mol, 50 kg/mol et 200 kg/mol) sur la photosensibilité des azocomplexes. La complexation entre les composants est d'abord confirmée par spectroscopie infrarouge statique (IR) et RMN 1H. La spectroscopie UV-visible de film minces irradiés par un faisceau laser à 488 nm polarisé linéairement confirme l'absence de séparation de phases et révèle un pourcentage minimum d'isomères cis à l'état photostationnaire similaire pour les deux séries de complexes (respectivement 14% et 20 % pour azoOH et MO). La spectroscopie IR d'absorption structurale avec modulation de la polarisation (PM-IRSAS) est ensuite utilisée pour étudier l'impact du type d'interaction supramoléculaire et de la masse molaire du polymère sur l'orientation photoinduite des azocomplexes. Leurs mouvements macroscopiques photoinduits par un patron d'interférence de lumière polarisée circulairement à 488 nm sont également étudiés en mesurant in situ l'efficacité de diffraction lors de l'inscription de SRG. Nous avons trouvé que les complexes ioniques répondent à la lumière beaucoup plus fortement que les complexes analogues liés par liaisons H, à la fois en termes d'orientation et d'efficacité de diffraction. Les résultats de PM-IRSAS montrent également une contribution beaucoup plus grande de la redistribution angulaire sur la déplétion angulaire sélective (angular hole burning) pour les complexes de MO. Par contre, la masse molaire du polymère hôte n’a pas d’impact important sur la photo-orientation moléculaire, alors qu’elle a un effet substantiel sur l’efficacité de l’inscription des SRG, le complexe de faible masse molaire présentant une performance supérieure à celle des deux autres complexes. Nous concluons que l'enchevêtrement des chaînes joue un rôle plus important que la température de transition vitreuse pour le phototransport dans ces systèmes. Le mémoire fournit des connaissances fondamentales sur l'effet de la nature et de la force des interactions supramoléculaires sur la photosensibilité des azocomplexes, contribuant ainsi à améliorer la conception de polymères photosensibles supramoléculaires efficaces., Supramolecular non-covalently bonded azobenzene-containing complexes are easy-to-prepare alternatives to covalently bonded azopolymers as photoresponsive materials. The rapid and reversible nanoscale photoisomerization of azobenzenes enables effective external control of the host material's properties and they can give rise to large-scale motions, such as macroscopic mass transport with polarized illumination. The light-induced phenomena in azomaterials offer great potential in various areas ranging from photonics to biology. Photoresponsive supramolecular materials often hydrogen bond between a passive polymer and a photoactive small molecule. However, ionic bonding between oppositely-charged components is also a versatile supramolecular approach to design azobenzene-containing systems. In this M.Sc. thesis, supramolecular assemblies of photopassive poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) and its quaternized derivative (P4VPMe) are hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) and ionically bonded (i-bonded), respectively, with analogous photoactive small molecules. The small molecules studied are 4-hydroxy-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene (azoOH) and methyl orange (MO), respectively, where the OH functionality of azoOH is replaced by a sulfonate group in MO. These photoactive complexes are studied with the following objectives: 1. To understand the effect of the bonding type on the photoinduced properties of azocomplexes, in particular their molecular orientation and their surface relief grating (SRG) diffraction efficiency (DE). 2. To determine the role of the polymer molecular weight (5.2, 50, and 200 kg/mol) on the photosensitivity of the azocomplexes. The complexation between components is first confirmed using static infrared (IR) spectroscopy and 1H NMR. UV-visible spectroscopy studies under illumination of linearly polarized 488-nm laser light of spin-coated thin films confirms the absence of phase separation in both series of complexes and reveals a similar minimum percentage of cis isomers (14% vs. 20% for azoOH and MO, respectively). Polarization modulation infrared structural absorbance spectroscopy (PM-IRSAS) is then used to investigate the impact of the supramolecular interaction type and the polymer molecular weight (MW) on the molecular-level photoinduced orientation () of the azocomplexes using linearly polarized 488-nm light. Then, their photoinduced macroscopic-scale motion that produces surface relief gratings (SRG) is investigated using an interference pattern of circularly polarized 488-nm light. We find that i-bonded complexes respond to light more strongly than their analogous H-bonded complexes, both in terms of and DE values. The PM-IRSAS results also show a much larger contribution of angular redistribution over angular hole burning for the MO-based complexes. In addition, the host polymer MW does not impact the molecular photo-orientation, while it does affect the SRG inscription efficiency. The low MW complex shows a higher DE than the two higher MW complexes. We can conclude that chain entanglement plays a more important role than the glass transition temperature for phototransport in these systems. The M.Sc. thesis provides fundamental knowledge of the effect of the supramolecular interaction type and strength on the photosensitivity of azocomplexes. This knowledge contributes to practical guidelines for the design of efficient supramolecular photoresponsive polymers.

A new type of self‐organized materials based on cholesteric networks filled with photoactive side‐chain copolymer is being developed. Supramolecular helical structure of cholesteric polymer network resulting in the selective reflection is used as a photonic scaffold. Photochromic azobenzene‐containing nematic copolymer is embedded in cholesteric scaffold and utilized as a photoactive media for optical pattering. 1D and 2D transmission diffraction gratings are successfully recorded in composite films by holographic technique. For the first time the possibility to create selective reflection gratings in cholesteric material mimicking the natural optical properties of cholesteric mesophase is demonstrated. That enables the coexistence of two selective gratings, where one has an intrinsic cholesteric periodic helical structure and the other is a holographic grating generated in photochromic polymer. The full‐polymer composites provide high light‐induced optical anisotropy due to effective photo‐orientation of side‐chain fragments of the azobenzene‐containing liquid crystalline polymer, and prevent the degradation of the helical superstructure maintaining all optical properties of cholesteric mesophase. The proposed class of optical materials could be easily applied to a broad range of polymeric materials with specific functionality. The versatility of the adjustment and material preprogramming combined with high optical performance makes these materials a highly promising candidate for modern optical and photonic applications.

La chimie supramoléculaire est basée sur l'assemblage non covalent de blocs simples, des petites molécules aux polymères, pour synthétiser des matériaux fonctionnels ou complexes. La poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) est l'une des composantes supramoléculaires les plus utilisées en raison de sa chaîne latérale composée d’une pyridine pouvant interagir avec de nombreuses espèces, telles que les petites molécules monofonctionnelles et bifonctionnelles, grâce à divers types d'interactions. Dans cette thèse, des assemblages supramoléculaires de P4VP interagissant par liaisons hydrogène avec de petites molécules sont étudiés, en ayant comme objectifs de faciliter l'électrofilage de polymères et de mieux comprendre et d'optimiser la photoréponse des matériaux contenant des dérivés d'azobenzène. Une nouvelle approche est proposée afin d'élargir l'applicabilité de l'électrofilage, une technique courante pour produire des nanofibres. À cet effet, un complexe entre la P4VP et un agent de réticulation bifonctionnel capable de former deux liaisons hydrogène, le 4,4'-biphénol (BiOH), a été préparé pour faciliter le processus d’électrofilage des solutions de P4VP. Pour mieux comprendre ce complexe, une nouvelle méthode de spectroscopie infrarouge (IR) a d'abord été développée pour quantifier l'étendue de la complexation. Elle permet de déterminer un paramètre clé, le rapport du coefficient d'absorption d'une paire de bandes attribuées aux groupements pyridines libres et liées par liaisons hydrogène, en utilisant la 4-éthylpyridine comme composé modèle à l’état liquide. Cette méthode a été appliquée à de nombreux complexes de P4VP impliquant des liaisons hydrogène et devrait être généralement applicable à d'autres complexes polymères. La microscopie électronique à balayage (SEM) a révélé l'effet significatif du BiOH sur la facilité du processus d’électrofilage de P4VP de masses molaires élevées et faibles. La concentration minimale pour former des fibres présentant des perles diminue dans le N, N'-diméthylformamide (DMF) et diminue encore plus lorsque le nitrométhane, un mauvais solvant pour la P4VP et un non-solvant pour le BiOH, est ajouté pour diminuer l'effet de rupture des liaisons hydrogène causé par le DMF. Les liaisons hydrogène dans les solutions et les fibres de P4VP-BiOH ont été quantifiées par spectroscopie IR et les résultats de rhéologie ont démontré la capacité de points de réticulation effectifs, analogues aux enchevêtrements physiques, à augmenter la viscoélasticité de solutions de P4VP pour mieux résister à la formation de gouttelettes. Cette réticulation effective fonctionne en raison d'interactions entre le BiOH bifonctionnel et deux chaînes de P4VP, et entre les groupements hydroxyles du BiOH complexé de manière monofonctionnelle. Des études sur d’autres agents de réticulation de faible masse molaire ont montré que la plus forte réticulation effective est introduite par des groupes d’acide carboxylique et des ions de zinc (II) qui facilitent le processus d’électrofilage par rapport aux groupements hydroxyles du BiOH. De plus, la sublimation est efficace pour éliminer le BiOH contenu dans les fibres sans affecter leur morphologie, fournissant ainsi une méthode élégante pour préparer des fibres de polymères purs dont le processus d’électrofilage est habituellement difficile. Deux complexes entre la P4VP et des azobenzènes photoactifs portant le même groupement tête hydroxyle et différents groupes queue, soit cyano (ACN) ou hydrogène (AH), ont été étudiés par spectroscopie infrarouge d’absorbance structurale par modulation de la polarisation (PM-IRSAS) pour évaluer l'impact des groupements queue sur leur performance lors de l'irradiation avec de la lumière polarisée linéairement. Nous avons constaté que ACN mène à la photo-orientation des chaînes latérales de la P4VP et des azobenzènes, tandis que AH mène seulement à une orientation plus faible des chromophores. La photo-orientation des azobenzènes diminue pour les complexes avec une teneur croissante en chromophore, mais l'orientation de la P4VP augmente. D'autre part, l'orientation résiduelle après la relaxation thermique augmente avec la teneur en ACN, à la fois pour le ACN et la P4VP, mais la tendance opposée est constatée pour AH. Ces différences suggèrent que le moment dipolaire a un impact sur la diffusion rotationnelle des chromophores. Ces résultats contribueront à orienter la conception de matériaux polymères contenant des azobenzène efficaces., Supramolecular chemistry is based on the non-covalent assembly of simple building blocks, from small molecules to polymers, to synthesize functional or complex materials. Poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) is one of the most used supramolecular components because its side-chain pyridine rings can interact with many species, such as monofunctional and bifunctional small molecules, through various types of interactions. In this thesis, supramolecular assemblies of P4VP hydrogen-bonded with various small molecules are studied with the objectives of facilitating the electrospinning of polymers and to better understand and optimize the photoresponse of azobenzene-containing materials. A new approach is proposed to widen the applicability of electrospinning, a common technique to produce thin nanofibers. To this end, a complex between P4VP and a bifunctional hydrogen bond crosslinker, 4,4’-biphenol (BiOH), is prepared to increase the electrospinnability of P4VP solutions. To better understand this complex, a new infrared (IR) spectroscopy method is first developed to quantify the extent of complexation. The method allows determining a key parameter, the absorption coefficient ratio of a pair of bands due to free and hydrogen-bonded pyridine rings, by using 4-ethylpyridine as a liquid model compound. This method is applied to many hydrogen-bonded P4VP complexes and should be generally applicable to other polymer complexes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals the significant effect of BiOH on the electrospinnability of P4VP with high and low molecular weights. The minimum concentration for the formation of beaded fibers decreases in N,N’-dimethylformamide (DMF) and to a greater extent when nitromethane, a poor solvent for P4VP and a non-solvent for BiOH, is added to decrease the hydrogen bond breaking effect of DMF. Hydrogen bonding in P4VP-BiOH solutions and fibers is quantified by IR spectroscopy and rheology results demonstrate the capability of the effective crosslinks, as analogs to physical entanglements, of increasing the viscoelasticity of P4VP solutions to better resist the formation of droplets. This effective crosslinking works due to bifunctional interactions of BiOH with two P4VP chains and between the hydroxyl groups of monofunctionally complexed BiOH. Studies of other small crosslinkers show that the stronger effective crosslinking introduced by carboxylic acid groups and zinc (II) ions leads to better electrospinnability than the hydroxyl groups of BiOH. Additionally, sublimation is found to be effective to remove BiOH from fibers without affecting their morphology, providing a smart method for preparing fibers of pure polymers with limited electrospinnability. Two complexes between P4VP and photoactive azobenzenes bearing the same hydroxyl head group and different tail groups, either cyano (ACN) or hydrogen (AH), are studied by polarization modulation infrared structural absorbance spectroscopy (PM-IRSAS) to investigate the impact of the tail groups on their performance upon irradiation with linearly polarized light. We find that ACN leads to photo-orientation of both P4VP side-chains and azobenzenes, while AH only leads to a weaker orientation of the chromophores. Photo-orientation of the azobenzenes decreases for both complexes with increasing chromophore content, but the orientation of P4VP increases. On the other hand, the residual orientation after thermal relaxation increases with increasing ACN content, for both ACN and P4VP, but the opposite trend is found for AH. Such differences suggest the impact of the dipole moment on the rotational diffusion of chromophores. These findings will contribute to directing the design of efficient azobenzene-containing polymer materials.

We report a computational study of the photo-orientation kinetics in a viscous solution of azobenzene in ethylene glycol, under irradiation with linearly polarized light. The development of anisotropy and its interplay with photoisomerization are simulated by a stochastic model. A distinctive feature of the model is that it takes into account the photo-orientation angular distributions, specific for each isomer, obtained by nonadiabatic dynamics simulations at the molecular level. We find that the anisotropy, as measured by optical absorption dichroism, does not necessarily increase monotonously with time. As expected, the photo-orientation turns out to be strongly coupled with photoisomerization, but the latter is not a mandatory ingredient of this phenomenon: we predict that any chromophore undergoing large amplitude geometry relaxation during its excited state dynamics can develop anisotropy under suitable conditions.
