Extracts from leaves and stems of Thymelaea tartonraira (L.) All. growing in Tunisia were characterised for the presence of flavonoids and phenolic acids by LC-ESI-MS analysis. Twelve flavonoids and ten phenolic acids were detected for the first time in the aerial parts of this plant species, the most abundant compounds being gallic acid, kaempferol, catechin, chlorogenic acid, naringenin and acacetin. The extracts were subjected to in vitro antileishmanial, antifungal and cytotoxic assays, showing promising antileishmanial activity for the E6 dichloromethane extract from the stems (IC50 values of 1.12 ± 0.50 and 5.41 ± 1.84 µg/mL on L. donovani axenic and intramacrophagic amastigotes, respectively) at the level of the reference drug miltefosine for axenic model. No antifungal activity was observed against Candida albicans (CAAL) and Aspergillus fumigatus (ASFU) strains, with the exception of the E6 dichloromethane extract (IC50 value of 25.28 ± 4.89 µg/mL on CAAL93 strain). Low toxicity was also highlighted against macrophages Raw 264.7 cells. These promising results point out Thymelaea tartonraira (L.) In this study, the effects of microwave and oven systems on bioactive properties (total phenolic, total flavonoid, and antioxidant capacity), fatty acids, polyphenols, and mineral contents of raw and roasted “Sarışeker” and “Balyumru” tubers are investigated. Antioxidant activity values of “Sarışeker” tigernut tubers roasted in microwave and oven systems are defined to be between 1.56 (540 W) and 2.57 mmolTE kg−1 (720 W) to 1.57 (80 and 120 °C) and 1.68 mmolTE kg−1 (100 °C), respectively. Gallic acid results of the “Sarışeker” and “Balyumru” tigernut tubers roasted in microwave are specified to be between 5.49 (720 W) and 6.59 mg/100 g (540 W) to 15.83 (900 W) and 21.47 mg/100 g (720 W), respectively. In general, the phenolic component values of the “Sarışeker” tigernut tubers roasted at different temperatures are higher than the “Sarışeker” tigernut samples roasted in the microwave. The oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acid values of the oils obtained from “Sarışeker” tubers roasted in both roasting systems increase compared to the control. The heat treatment has different effects on the contents of different elements of the tigernut tubers. Buffalo meat is naturally perishable, making it susceptible to spoilage due to its high moisture content and vulnerability to microbial contamination. Edible coatings have attracted attention as a packaging method that can prolong the shelf life of meat. The study aimed to examine the impact of a combination of Lepidium sativum mucilage (LS) coating and propolis extract (PE) on prolonging the shelf life of buffalo meat. The chemical characteristics (chemical compounds, total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant activity, and cytotoxicity) and antimicrobial activity of the PE (disk diffusion agar, well diffusion agar, minimum inhibitory concentration, and minimum bactericidal concentration) were investigated. The effect of the PE on the cell wall of pathogenic bacteria was examined using a scanning electron microscope. Biological properties of LS (TPC, TFC, antioxidant activity and antimicrobial effect (pour plate method)) was investigated. Different concentrations of PE (0, 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5%) were added to the coating mixture containing LS, and their effects on extending the shelf life of buffalo meat samples stored at 4°C for 9 days were assessed. The PE included gallic acid, benzoic acid, syringic acid, 4–3 dimethoxy cinnamic acid, p-coumaric acid, myricetin, caffeic acid, luteolin, chlorogenic acid, and apigenin. The PE was determined to have a TPC of 36.67 ± 0.57 mg GAE/g and a TFC of 48.02 ± 0.65 mg QE/g. The extract's radical scavenging activity ranged from 0 to 76.22% for DPPH radicals and from 0 to 50.31% for ABTS radicals. The viability of C115 HeLa cell was observed to be 94.14 μg/mL. The PE and LS, exhibited strong antimicrobial properties against pathogenic bacteria. The LS was determined to have a TPC of 15.23 ± 0.43 mg GAE/g and a TFC of 11.51± 0.61 mg QE/g. The LS was determined to have a DPPH of 429.65 ± 1.28 μg/mL and a ABTS of 403.59 ± 1.46 μg/mL. The microbiological analysis revealed that the LS+2.5%PE treatment was the most effective in inhibiting the growth of total viable count (6.23 vs. 8.00 log CFU/g), psychrotrophic bacteria count (3.71 vs. 4.73 log CFU/g), coliforms count (2.78 vs. 3.70 log CFU/g), and fungi count (2.39 vs. 3.93 log CFU/g) compared to the control sample. The addition of PE to the edible coating also demonstrated a concentration-dependent effect on preserving the moisture, pH, color, and hardness of the buffalo meat. Sensory evaluation results suggested that incorporating PE into the edible coating extended the shelf life of buffalo meat by three days. In the second stage of this paper, this investigation employed two distinct forecasting methodologies: the Radial Basis Function (RBF) and the Support Vector Machine (SVM), to predict a range of quality indicators for coated meat products. Upon comparison, the RBF model exhibited a higher level of accuracy, showcasing its exceptional capacity to closely match the experimental outcomes. Therefore, this type of food coating, renowned for its strong antimicrobial properties, has the potential to effectively package and preserve perishable and delicate food items, such as meat. Background: The research is aimed at exploring the potential of marigold petal tea (MPT), rich in polyphenol contents, against oxidative stress and obesity in a rat model following a high‐fat‐sugar diet (HFSD). Methods: The MPT was prepared through the customary method of decoction and was subjected to analysis for its polyphenol composition using reversed‐phase high‐performance liquid chromatography (RP‐HPLC). Two specific doses of MPT, namely, 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight (BW), were chosen for the study—referred to as MPT‐250 and MPT‐500, respectively. Result: The main phenolic acids and flavonoids identified in MPT, with concentrations exceeding 10 mg/100 mL of tea, included catechin, rutin, salicylic acid, gallic acid, sinapic acid, chlorogenic acid, cinnamic acid, and ellagic acid. The total phenolic (TP) and total flavonoid (TF) contents in MPT were measured to be 5.53 and 7.73 mg/g, respectively. Additionally, MPT demonstrated a 57.2% scavenging capacity with 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl radical. Notably, the administration of a higher dose (MPT‐500) showed a significant reduction in body mass index (BMI) and a 51.24% reduction in the rate of increase in BW compared to the HFSD group. The findings indicated that all the treatment groups, that is, orlistat treatment (OT), MPT‐250, and MPT‐500 groups, experienced reduced levels of serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and markers of lipoproteins in contrast to the HFSD group. Moreover, MPT helped restore the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and reduced glutathione (GSH), thereby demonstrating its potential in combating oxidative stress. The MPT‐500 group also displayed decreased liver and kidney weights and an improved atherogenic index when compared to the HFSD group. Conclusion: The results clearly indicate that a high dosage of MPT showed antiobesity activity which was comparable to the same effects produced by the conventional drug orlistat. Astragalus membranaceus (AM) roots are a well-known homologous medicine and food in China. AM stems, which are discarded and not used effectively, also contain many active compounds and exhibit beneficial effects. It has the potential to be explored as antibiotic alternative. Fermentation combined with enzymatic hydrolysis (FEH) is an effective strategy for extracting polyphenol and improving the usage of AM stems. Therefore, in this study, the conditions of FEH and extraction for polyphenol in AM stems were screened. The antioxidant activity of extract from AM stems without and with FEH (AMSE and FAMSE) was evaluated. The metabolite profiles of phenolic acids and flavonoids in AMSE and FAMSE were characterized by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–ESI-MS/MS). The results showed that the highest polyphenol content from AM stems was obtained with cellulase and pectinase (1:1, 2000 U/g), moisture content 43%, fermentation temperature 30 °C, and fermentation time 7 days. Selected extraction conditions of polyphenol were ethanol concentration 50%, ultrasonic power 500 W, extraction temperature 35 °C, and extraction time 40 min. On this condition, compared with AMSE, the polyphenol and flavonoid contents in FAMSE were significantly higher. FAMSE exhibited stronger DPPH, hydroxyl radical scavenging rate and reducing power than AMSE. The relative content of 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionic acid, dihydroferulic acid, isoferulic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxyphenyllactic acid, ferulic acid, vanillic acid, syringic acid, gentisic acid, sinapic acid, apigenin, tricin, acacetin, daidzein, genistein, formononetin, prunetin, pratensein, rhamnocitrin and galangin were significantly upregulated in FAMSE. AbstractFree or conjugated aromatic/phenolic acids arise from the diet, endogenous metabolism of catecholamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine), protein (phenylalanine, tyrosine), pharmaceuticals (aspirin, metaprolol) plus gut microbiota metabolism of dietary (poly)phenols and undigested protein. Quantitative data obtained with authentic calibrants for 112 aromatic/phenolic acids including phase-2 conjugates in human plasma, urine, ileal fluid, feces and tissues have been collated and mean/median values compared with in vitro bioactivity data in cultured cells. Ca 30% of publications report bioactivity at ≤1 μmol/L. With support from clinical studies, it appears that the greatest benefit might be produced in vascular tissues by C6–C3 metabolites, including some of gut microbiota origin and some phase-2 conjugates, 15 of which are 3′,4′-disubstituted with multiple sources including caffeic acid and hesperetin, plus one unsubstituted and two mono-substituted examples which can originate from protein. There is an unexamined potential for synergy. Free-living and washout plasma data are scarce. Some metabolites have been overlooked, notably phenyl-lactic, phenyl-hydracrylic and phenyl-propanoic acids, especially those from amino acids plus glycine, hydroxy-glycine and glutamine conjugates. Phenolic acids and conjugates from multiple sources exhibit biological activities, some of which are likely relevant in vivo and link to biomarkers of health. Further targeted studies are justified. Summary: The present study investigated the phenolic profile, sugar composition and amino acid profile of lyophilised 10‐day‐old wheatgrass cultivated under varying temperature and photoperiod conditions. The targeted phenolic profile showed the abundant presence of chlorogenic, caffeic, ferulic and p‐coumaric acid. The phenolic content varied with temperature and photoperiod conditions. The comprehensive sugar profile indicated the variation in the concentration of glucose with different growing conditions altered carbohydrate metabolism in wheatgrass. Similarly, the concentration of amino acids also varied with growing conditions. Notably, the concentration of proline, arginine and GABA in wheatgrass from all wheat varieties increased more prominently in photoperiod of 22 h and growth temperature of 22 °C in light and 17 °C in dark as a response of defence mechanism. Summary: Kombucha has gained global attention for its beneficial bioactive compounds. This study aimed to evaluate Thunbergia laurifolia tea as a potential substrate for Kombucha production due to its rich polyphenol content and biological properties, including antioxidant and anticancer properties, through monoculture and simultaneous mixed coculture fermentation. The pH and brix of the teas decreased significantly during fermentation, indicating sugar hydrolysis and organic acid synthesis by fermenting microbes. The alcohol content was higher in yeast monocultures (45.80 ± 0.00¬50.23 ± 0.08 g L−1) compared to mixed coculture fermented (CBY) tea (20.16 ± 0.00 g L−1). Total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity increased significantly in CBY tea compared to non‐fermented and monoculture teas. CBY also exhibited the highest cumulative phenolic compound content, including rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, gallic acid, rutin, catechin, and quercetin, compared to monoculture teas. Summary: This study focused on the fabrication of zein‐based coatings functionalised by two phenolic acids, caffeic acid (CA) and p‐coumaric acid (pCA), using electrospinning. The electrospun fibres were fabricated with three different concentrations (5%, 10% and 20% w/w) of CA and pCA individually. The average fibre diameter (AFD) increased due to the addition of phenolic acids. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that degradation temperatures of the zein electrospun fibres were not significantly affected (P > 0.05) after the incorporation of CA and pCA. Meanwhile, interactions between zein and the phenolic acids were indicated by surface characterisation. CA‐loaded zein electrospun fibres exhibited increasing antioxidant activity with increasing CA concentration. Both phenolic acid‐loaded zein electrospun fibres displayed favourable antibacterial activities against S. aureus and E. coli foodborne pathogens. Summary: Polygonum minus (PM) has a rich traditional usage for health benefits, yet its potential as a natural‐based solution for obesity management remains unexplored. This study evaluated the antioxidant properties, inhibition of pancreatic lipase and α‐glucosidase activities, and metabolite profiles of PM aerial extracts harvested at 8, 10, and 12 weeks using 1H NMR‐based metabolomics. PM harvested at 12 weeks exhibited significant antioxidant and enzyme inhibition activities. NMR metabolomics unveiled nine major metabolites correlated to the bioactivities of 12‐week PM. LC–MS/MS profiling enabled the identification of flavonoids and phenolic acids, with the majority having sulfate, gallate, and glycoside moieties. Notably, in vivo experiments demonstrated that rats treated with 200 mg kg−1 and 400 mg kg−1 PM exhibited significantly lower (P < 0.05) total body weight gain (39.03% and 52.59%, respectively) compared to negative control rats (69.95%), with the lower dose group also exhibiting reduced (P < 0.05) fasting blood glucose levels. Summary: Antibiotic resistance is now deemed a worldwide problem that puts public health at risk. The potential of Murraya (Murraya koenigii (L.) Spreng. and Murraya paniculata (L.) Jacq.) leaves and stems as antibacterial agents against multidrug‐resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDRAB) was assessed in our study. First, screening was performed by disc diffusion assay, and minimum inhibitory concentration values were then determined as compared to tigecycline. A. baumnii mouse model of infection was established to substantiate the antibacterial activity of Murraya species. Results revealed high antimicrobial activity for stem of both plants where leaves showed moderate to weak activity. Phytochemical characterisation revealed the identification of 129 metabolites belonging to different classes of compounds viz. coumarins, carbazole alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and miscellaneous. In vivo data from the animal model supported the high efficiency of M. paniculata stems as promising extract for lead candidates against MDRAB pulmonary infections. Inhibition of its essential MurF (UDP‐N‐acetylmuramoyl‐tripeptide‐D‐alanyl‐d‐alanine ligase) protein has been reported as a potential target for broad‐spectrum drugs. In silico results after molecular docking to MurF from Acinetobacter baumannii (PDB ID: 4QF5) showed competitive binding mode to ATP ligand at the active site predicting antibacterial activity of the tested compounds. Furthermore, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, sinapic acid, feruloyl agmatine, and mahanimbidine were detected as the key discriminatory metabolites correlated with antibacterial activity. To our knowledge, this is the first in vivo anti‐MDRAB study for the investigated plant. Background: The increasing quest for effective and safe antiaging skincare solutions has led to a surge in the exploration of natural compounds such as phenolic acids. Despite the proven efficacy of traditional antiaging ingredients like retinol, their associated side effects have necessitated the search for alternatives. Aims: This study aimed to assess the anti‐wrinkle efficacy of a standardized phenolic acids polymer extract (PAPE) from propolis, employing both in vitro and clinical methodologies to explore its suitability as a novel antiaging skincare ingredient for sensitive and nonsensitive skin types. Patients/Methods: The study comprised of evaluating PAPE effects on key skin health biomarkers in dermal fibroblasts and keratinocytes. A double‐blind, randomized clinical trial involving female participants aged 30–70 years assessed the wrinkle‐reducing effectiveness of face creams formulated with two concentrations of PAPE (1.5% and 3%) over a 28‐day period. Results: In vitro studies indicated that PAPE could modulate inflammation and tissue remodeling biomarkers. The clinical trial demonstrated that applying PAPE‐enriched cream resulted in significant wrinkle reduction, with 25% and 34% improvements for the 1.5% and 3% PAPE formulations, respectively. Subjective feedback from participants further validated the antiaging efficacy and overall satisfaction with the product. Conclusion: Incorporating PAPE offers a compelling antiaging solution, significantly reducing wrinkle depth with a favorable safety profile. Carbon nanotubes as novel plant elicitors are intensively studied in biotechnology due to their concentration-dependent effects on plant health. This emphasizes the importance of studying nanomaterials in the field of plant nanotoxicology and enables a better understanding of their advantages and disadvantages for plant health. Researchers examined how various concentrations of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) affect growth and polyphenolic accumulation in the medicinal herb, Melissa officinalis. Two-month-old plant shoots were sprayed with various concentrations (0–250 mg L−1) of COOH- functionalized MWCNTs and harvested two and three weeks after elicitation. TEM images confirmed MWCNTs uptake into the mesophyll and the vessels of leaves. Low to moderate MWCNT concentrations (50–100 mg L−1) boosted growth indices and increased total amount of phenols, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, peaking three weeks after treatment with 100 mg L−1 MWCNTs, without destroying the cells and subcellular organelles. HPLC analysis showed this treatment yielded the highest content of rosmarinic acid, salvianolic acid B, apigenin, and kaempferol. However, 250 mg L−1 MWCNTs damaged cells without boosting metabolite production. Intractable inflammation plays a key role in the progression of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Oedema and angiogenesis are the hall marks of chronic inflammation. The current study was aimed to investigate the pharmacological effects of the methanolic extract of Viola odorata (Vo.Me) on inflammation induced oedema and angiogenesis, and to identify the active principles and explore the molecular mechanisms thereof. Various models of inflammation were utilized in rats, including carrageenan- and histamine-induced acute oedema, as well as chronic models of Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritis and cotton pellet-induced granuloma. Anti-angiogenic activity was evaluated by CAM assay followed by quantification of phytoconstituents through HPLC. Effect of Vo.Me treatment on the expression of various mediators (PGE-2 and NO) and genes (IL-1β, TNF-α, NF-κB, and COX-2) were explored by qPCR and ELISA assays. HPLC analysis showed the presence of quercetin, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, benzoic acid, m-coumaric acid, p-coumaric acid, synergic acid, caffeic acid, vanillic acid, sinapic acid, and cinnamic acid in Vo.Me. Significant dose-dependent inhibition of rats' paw oedema was observed in the Vo.Me administered groups (p < 0.05) in both acute and chronic inflammatory models. Moreover, at a dosage of 500 mg/kg, Vo.Me exhibited a comparable anti-inflammatory effect to indomethacin (p > 0.05). Additionally, Vo.Me demonstrated a remarkable anti-granulomatous activity. Histopathological findings demonstrated amelioration of inflammation in animal paws which were treated with Vo.Me and indomethacin. CAM assay also displayed significant inhibitory effect of Vo.Me on the blood vasculature growth. Vo.Me treatment also caused relatively less gastric irritation and hepatic damage as compared to indomethacin. At a molecular level, the down-regulation of NF-κB signalling leading to the decreased activation of pro-inflammatory mediators (such as IL-1β, TNF-α, and COX-2) and their downstream molecules including prostaglandin E-2 (PGE-2) and nitric oxide (NO), is suggested to be responsible for these diverse anti-inflammatory effects. These findings confirmed the promising anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic activities of Vo.Me, which warrant bench-to-bedside translational studies to assess its safety and suitability for clinical usage. • Amaranthus caudatus and Amaranthus cruentus are common amaranth species consumed in South Africa. • Pre-harvest application of different concentrations of phytostim biostimulant were investigated. • Growth and yield components were improved by the application of 1.5 % concentration in both studied species. • Application of 0.5 and 1.0 % improved the protein content, some minerals and bioactive components. The current study aims to evaluate the effect of pre-harvest application of different concentrations of phytostim biostimulant on growth, yield, nutrition, phenolic acids and some phenolic compound in two species of Amaranthus. A two factor greenhouse trial was established in a split-plot to accommodate eight phytostim biostimulant concentrations (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2.5, 3, 4.5, and 6%) in Amaranthus cruentus and Amaranthus caudatus for up to 60 days post-transplant. Application of 1.5% phytostim biostimulant resulted in the highest growth and biomass accumulation, whilst concentrations of >3% resulted in reduced growth and biomass yield in both studied species. These results were in concomitant to an enhanced accumulation of total phenols, total flavonoids, β-carotene, and antioxidants activity (DPPH and ABTS) in Amaranthus cruentus. Application of 1% in Amaranthus cruentus had a positive effect of the accumulation of zinc, iron and calcium and some amino acids (alanine, asparagine, lysine and arginine). In Amaranthus caudatus , 0.5% concentration resulted in the highest total phenols, total flavonoids, antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS), chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll. Amaranthus cruentus 0.5% resulted in the highest 2-O-caffeoylglucaric acid, whilst application of 1.0% in Amaranthus caudatus showed the highest caffeic acid, 3-O-glucuronide thus suggesting. Thus, suggesting that phytostim biostimulant can be used to manipulate growth and nutritional components in the studied Amaranthus species. Plants of the genus Erythrina have a significant history of medicinal use for the treatment of various ailments. Previous reports have shown the occurrence of various phytochemicals in Erythrina species with a wide range of biological activities. This book chapter reviews the information on the ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, and antiproliferative potential of the genus Erythrina. The information on Erythrina species was compiled from electronic databases such as Google Scholar, Medline, PubMed, SciFinder, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Springer Link as well as books, and Ph.D. dissertations. Phytochemical studies of Erythrina species showed that alkaloids and flavonoids are their main secondary metabolites. Triterpenes, sterols, stilbenes, coumarins, and phenolic acids are also reported in the genus. Pharmacological investigations with crude extracts and isolated compounds from Erythrina species revealed a broad range of antiproliferative activity against several drug sensitive and multidrug-resistant (MDR) cancer cell lines. Among the isolated compounds, phenolic compounds mainly flavonoids (Abyssinoflavanones I, II, and VII, sigmoidin I, eryvarin B, erythraddison II-IV, warangalone, 5,4′-dihydroxy-2′-methoxy-8-(3,3-dimethylallyl)-2″,2″-dimethylpyrano [5,6:6,7]isoflavone, erymildbraedin A and B, echrenone b10, phaseollidin, erybraedin A, isoneorautenol, phaseollin, cristacarpin, and erystagallin A), terpenoids (oleanolic acid and maniladiol), and a phenolic derivative (excelsaperoxide) displayed potent antiproliferative activities. Globally, the reviewed data herein would be a valuable reference tool for future researchers seeking to explore the potential application of plants of the genus Erythrina for the development of anticancer agents. Lentils (Lens culinaris Medik.), the earliest legumes grown by humans, are essential food sources in many countries. This review summarizes the nutrient profile, phytochemical profile, sensory properties, bioaccessibility, along with health benefits of lentils. Lentils are not only rich in protein, carbohydrates, and fats but various bioactive substances, especially flavonoids and phenolic acids. However, their bioavailability is poor due to the presence of certain antinutritional factors, containing tannins, phytic acid, protease inhibitors as well as lectins. Specific information for the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of phenolics and minerals in lentils is listed. Besides, several conventional along with novel techniques that used to improve bioaccessibility and bioavailability of lentils, such as soaking, dehulling, thermal processing, isoelectric precipitation, pulsed electric field, and high-pressure processing are introduced as well. In addition, various potential health benefits are reviewed, including anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, and anti-obesity properties. Thereby, increased consumption and utilization of lentils as functional foods are considered the key to combating certain chronic diseases in the human body. Main conclusion: After the most comprehensive analysis of the phenolic composition in Cannabis reported to date, a total of 211 compounds were identified, phenolic profiles were able to discriminate cannabis varieties and a complex regulatory network for phenolics accumulation in Cannabis chemovars was highlighted. Female inflorescences of Cannabis sativa L. are plenty of secondary metabolites, of which flavonoids and phenolic acids have been investigated by far less than phytocannabinoids and terpenoids. Understanding the biochemical composition in phenylpropanoids of Cannabis inflorescences, the molecular basis of flavonoid synthesis and how their content can be modulated by specific transcription factors will shed light on the variability of this trait in the germplasm, allowing the identification of biologically active metabolites that can be of interest to diverse industries. In this work, an untargeted metabolomic approach via UHPLC-HRMS was adopted to investigate the composition and variability of phenylpropanoids in thirteen Cannabis genotypes differentiated for their profile in phytocannabinoids, highlighting that phenolic profiles can discriminate varieties, with characteristic, unique genotype-related patterns. Moreover, the transcription profile of candidate phenolics regulatory MYB and bHLH transcription factors, analyzed by RT-qPCR, appeared strongly genotype-related, and specific patterns were found to be correlated between biochemical and transcriptional levels. AbstractCaffeic acid is a common phenolic acid found in coffee and numerous fruits and vegetables. Known for its antioxidant properties, it is widely used as a dietary supplement as part of a polyphenol mixture or as an extract in the form of a capsule or powder. It is also available in liquid form as a homeopathic supplement. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is an active component of propolis produced by honey bees. Propolis extract is used as a supplement and is available in various forms. The present paper is a comprehensive review of the biomedical literature, showing that caffeic acid effects are hormetic and occur in numerous biological models and cell types for a broad range of endpoints including many aging-related processes. Hormesis is a biphasic dose/concentration response displaying a low concentration/dose stimulation and a high concentration/dose inhibition. Complex alternative search strategies for caffeic acid were used since publications rarely used the terms hormesis or hormetic. Evaluation of the data provides the first assessment of caffeic acid-induced hormetic concentration/dose responses and their quantitative features. Their mechanistic foundations, extrapolative strengths/limitations, and their biomedical, clinical, and public health implications are discussed. Suggestions for future research are presented. With the increasing demand for non-chemical weed control methods, phenolic acids have shown promise due to their natural weed inhibitory potential. In this study, the inhibitory effect of ferulic acid, vanillic acid and p-coumaric acid was investigated on Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. and the selectivity of Zea mays L. against these phenolic acids was tested. The seeds of A. artemisiifolia and Z. mays were treated in vitro with three phenolic acids at doses of 200–600 × 10−7 mol and in vivo foliar on A. artemisiifolia and Z. mays plants. While all phenolic acids had effects on the early growth of A. artemisiifolia, p-coumaric acid significantly reduced the length of radicle and hypocotyl by more than 60% while the effects on Z. mays were minimal. In vivo assessments using chlorophyll fluorescence and multispectral imaging showed selective stress responses in A. artemisiifolia but not in Z. mays after foliar application. The in vitro results show that p-coumaric acid is a promising compound for the control of A. artemisiifolia. However, these phenolic acids at these doses led to an insufficient reduction in photochemical efficiency. Therefore, these natural compounds need to be combined with other methods of weed control. The rate constants for the reaction of hydroperoxyl (or perhydroxyl) radical HOO˙ with fifteen phenols and ascorbyl palmitate were measured in acetonitrile at 37 °C by evaluating the effect that the antioxidants had on the rate of autoxidation of γ-terpinene. The HOO˙ radical represents an important reactive species that can be formed by protonation of superoxide anions (O2˙−) or by fragmentation of alkylperoxyl radicals (ROO˙) formed during the autoxidation of pro-aromatic derivatives like γ-terpinene. The phenols investigated in this study include natural compounds like phenolic acids (protocatechuic, caffeic and dihydrocaffeic acids), flavonoids (3-hydroxyflavone, pinobanksin, galangin, catechin, luteolin, quercetin, 6-methoxyluteolin), 4-methylcatechol and antioxidant additives ascorbyl palmitate and the a-tocopherol analogue 2,2,5,7,8-pentamethyl-6-chromanol. The rate constants for the reaction of HOO˙ with the above compounds (kinh) spanned from 1 × 103 M−1 s−1 for the unsubstituted phenol, to 7 × 104 and 9 × 104 M−1 s−1 for 4-methylcatechol and ascorbyl palmitate, respectively. As in a typical Evans–Polanyi plot, the log(kinh) was found to be inversely proportional to the bond dissociation enthalpy of the reactive OH. The comparison of the results with the data reported in the literature shows an unusual kinetic solvent effect that enlightens the unique behavior of HOO˙ and provides a rationale for the superior radical trapping ability of catechols and ascorbyl palmitate. Introduction: Indigenous plants have historically been crucial in treating human diseases across various cultures worldwide. Research continues to uncover new therapeutic uses for indigenous plants, from treating infectious diseases to managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and wound care. This study aimed to examine the effect of palm tree leaves "Phoenix dactylifera L" extract and its topical film formulation on wound healing and blood glucose levels. Methods: Palm leaves were collected, authenticated, powdered, and extracted with ethanol by cold maceration. Saponins were isolated. The dried extract was analyzed using reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography to identify the phytochemicals present. Diabetes mellitus was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of Streptozotocin (40mg/kg). Rats with blood glucose levels ≥ 200 mg/dl were used to determine the reduction in blood glucose with or without the oral extract. Incision and excision wounds were induced in both diabetic and normal rats. Topical films containing extract or saponin and inert films were applied to the wounds every other day, and wound sizes were recorded until the wound was completely healed. Results: The presence of six flavonoids, Naringin, Rutin, Quercetin, Kaempferol, Apigenin, and Catechin, and five phenolic acids, Syringic acid, p Coumaric acid, Caffeic acid, Ferulic acid, Ellagic acid were detected in the dried extract. A significant reduction in blood sugar in diabetic rats and wound diameter in the treated group compared to the control group in both diabetic and normal rats was observed, confirming the promising role of palm leaf extract on diabetes and wound care. Macroscopic, morphometric, and histological data suggested that the cutaneous wound healing in rats treated with the leaf extract was better and faster than the control or inert groups. Conclusions: Our research findings highlight the marked effect of Phoenix dactylifera extract as a supportive or alternative treatment for both hyperglycemia and incision or excision wounds. This work studies the partition of phenolic compounds, namely caffeic acid, syringic acid, vanillic acid, ferulic acid, and vanillin, in aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) formed by acetonitrile and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on choline chloride ([Ch]Cl) and carbohydrates (sucrose, d-glucose, d-mannose, arabinose, and d-xylose). The binodal curves built at 25 °C and 0.1 MPa using DES were compared with ATPS composed of [Ch]Cl and the same carbohydrates. The ability to form ATPS depends on the number and kind of hydroxyl groups in DES's hydrogen-bond donor compound (carbohydrates). ATPS based on DES showed biphasic regions larger than the systems based on [Ch]Cl and carbohydrates alone due to the larger hydrophilicity of DES. The ATPS were used to study the partition of the phenolic compounds. For all the systems, the biomolecules preferentially partitioned to the acetonitrile-rich phase (K > 1), and the best recovery in the top phase ranged between 53.36% (caffeic acid) and 90.09% (vanillin). According to the remarkable results, DES-based ATPS can selectively separate ferulic acid and vanillin for the top phase and syringic, caffeic, and vanillic acids for the bottom phase, achieving a selectivity higher than two. Plant secondary metabolites, including phenolics, represent a large quantity of organic material that enters soil and contributes to the formation of soil organic matter (SOM). The process of phenolics forming SOM remains poorly understood. One possible mechanism is oxidation of the phenolic compound catalyzed by redox active metals such as manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) in soils. In this work, we report how three phenolic compounds react with a redox active environmentally relevant metal, Mn(IV). The reactions were monitored via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and direct CO2 measurements. Using these techniques, we demonstrate that gallic acid reacts with Mn(IV) less efficiently than pyrogallol. The products of the gallic acid:Mn(IV) reaction are more oxidized than the products of the pyrogallol reaction. Gallic acid produces small molecules and releases CO2, while pyrogallol produces a less oxidized product, likely a quinone, and releases less CO2. Benzoic acid did not react with Mn(IV). Five Australian seaweed species, Phyllosphora comosa, Ecklonia radiata, Durvillaea potatorum, Sargassum fallax, and Cystophora siliquosa, thrive along the country's shorelines. Some of these seaweeds have recognized health benefits but have not been fully investigated in terms of their bioactive components and mechanisms of action. We employed ultrasonication with 70% methanol to extract phenolic compounds from these seaweeds and investigated a range of bioactivities for these extracts, including anti‐inflammatory activity exploring urease inhibition, nitric oxide scavenging activity, protein denaturation inhibition, and protease inhibition. Anti‐diabetic activities were investigated using α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase inhibition assays. Anti‐proliferative and anti‐mitotic activities were evaluated using yeast‐cell and green‐gram models, respectively. Our findings showed that C. siliquosa inhibited nitric oxide, urease, and protease activities, with S. fallax, P. comosa, and E. radiata exhibiting substantial inhibition of protein denaturation. E. radiata displayed inhibitory effects on both α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase, whereas P. comosa targeted only the α‐glucosidase enzyme, indicating different mechanisms of anti‐diabetic activity. In these anti‐mitotic assays, C. siliquosa exhibited low cell viability and a significant anti‐proliferative effect, particularly within 24 h, while E. radiata demonstrated notable inhibition at 48 h. LC‐ESI‐QTOF‐MS/MS investigation identified 48 phenolic compounds, including 19 phenolic acids, 20 flavonoids, and 9 other polyphenols. The presence of these compounds in extracts correlated with observed biological activities. Pelargonium graveolens L'Hèr. (Geraniaceae) is renowned for its traditional use as a flavor, ornamental and medicinal plant. This work aimed at an in-depth study of the phytochemical profiling and in vitro antioxidant and enzyme inhibition assessment of a methanol-aqueous extract from P. graveolens leaves. A UHPLC-HRMS analysis revealed more than 110 secondary metabolites, including 8 acyltartaric and 11 acylcitric/acylisocitric acids; 8 gallotannins; 36 flavonols, flavanones and methoxylated flavonoids together with 17 phenolic and aliphatic acids; and 21 phenolic acid glycosides. For the first time, acylcitric acids along with feruloyl- and coumaroyltartaric acids are reported in the species. The leaf extract actively scavenged 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl DPPH (273.45 mg trolox equivalent (TE/g)) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS•+) radicals (531.97 mgTE/g) and showed a high reducing power: 431.32 mg TE/g Cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) and 292.21 mg TE/g Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). It possessed a metal chelating capacity (13.44 ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid equivalent (EDTAE)/g) and contained 2.71 mmol TE/g in the phosphomolybdenum assay. The rose geranium extract exhibited high inhibition towards acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase (2.80 and 2.20 mg galantamine equivalent (GALAE)/g, respectively) and tyrosinase (75.49 mg kojic acid equivalent (KAE)/g). It inhibited α-glucosidase and α-amylase (3.75 mmol and 0.79 acarbose equivalent (ACAE)/g, respectively) and lipase (28.91 mg orlistat equivalent (OE)/g). The fruit of the Mexican madroño (Arbutus arizonica) has been consumed since pre-Columbian times by North American tribes and native groups in Mexico. Despite this, reports on its chemical composition and biological activity are limited. This work aims to determine the antioxidant, antiproliferative, and digestive enzyme inhibition activities of the methanol amberlite-retained extract of Mexican madroño. Results showed that madroño fruit is rich in antioxidants: DPPH (EC50 = 0.89 ± 0.03 mg/mL), TEAC (1078 ± 4.9 μM/g), and hemolysis inhibition (IC50 = 358.07 μg/mL), with high phenolic and flavonoid content at 15.92 ± 3.2 mg GAE/g and 4.33 ± 0.3 mg CA/g, respectively. Using analytical chromatography, gallic acid, vanillic acid, chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, quercetin, and rutin were quantified. The extract also showed α-glucosidase inhibition (IC50 = 3.1 ± 0.17 mg/mL), but no inhibition against α-amylase and lipase (>5 mg/mL), while showing antiproliferative activity against HeLa, HT-29, and MCF-7 cancer cell lines. Pigmented rice grass juice (RGJ) is a good source of bioactive compounds, but fresh juice has a relatively short shelf life of only 7 days at 4 °C. The objectives of this study were to determine the optimal growth stage of pigmented rice grass, investigate the optimal condition of high-pressure processing (HPP) for bacterial inactivation in inoculated RGJ using response surface methodology (RSM), and evaluate quality changes in uninoculated HPP-treated juice during storage at 4 °C compared with heat-treated (85 °C/10 min) and untreated samples. Results revealed that the optimal growth stage of rice grass was 9 days with the highest total anthocyanin content of 158.92 mg/L. The optimal condition of HPP was determined to be 612 MPa, 11 min, and 36 °C, and inactivated Escherichia coli K12 and Listeria innocua with 6.43 and 5.02 log reductions, respectively, meeting FDA regulations. The lethality of bacteria after HPP treatment can be explained by damage to the cell membrane and the leakage of intracellular constituents such as protein and nucleic acid. During 12 weeks of storage at 4 °C, total plate counts and yeast and mold counts in uninoculated HPP-treated juice were not detected. Moreover, HPP did not significantly change phytochemical properties (p < 0.05), caused a minor impact on physicochemical properties of RGJ, and maintained the durability of juice samples during storage. Analysis of the phytochemical profile revealed that HPP treatment could preserve most of the phenolic compounds in RGJ and especially increase the contents of protocatechuic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, syringic acid, transcinnamic acid, isorhamnetin-3-o-glucoside, quercetin, and cyanidin-3-glucoside (p < 0.05). Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is a widely used culinary herb. In this study, ethanol, dichloromethane, and sunflower oil were used separately as solvents with distinct polarities for the extraction of basil aerial parts to simulate the different polarity conditions in domestic food processing. The oil extract (OE) was re-extracted with acetonitrile, and the chemical composition, antioxidant potential, and antimicrobial activities of the ethanol (EE), dichloromethane (DCME), and acetonitrile (ACNE) extracts were determined. A total of 109 compounds were tentatively identified in EE, DCME, and ACNE by HPLC–DAD/ESI-ToF-MS. Fatty acids were present in all extracts. Phenolic acids and flavonoids dominated in EE. DCME was characterised by triterpenoid acids, while diterpenoids were mainly found in ACNE. The extracts were analysed for their antioxidant capacity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) assay. EE and DCME showed significant radical scavenging potential. Antimicrobial activity was explored in eight bacterial, two yeast, and one fungal species. All extracts exhibited high antifungal activity, comparable to or better than that of the commercial drug nistatin. Antibacterial activities were notable for EE and ACNE, while DCME showed no activity against bacteria in the applied concentration ranges. Introduction: Sanguisorba officinalis L. is classified as a medicinal plant and used in traditional medicine. The root of this plant is mainly used as a medicinal raw material, but the above-ground parts are also a valuable source of healthpromoting biologically active compounds. Method: The study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity and total polyphenol content (TPC) of extracts prepared in 70% and 40% aqueous ethanol solution (dry extract content 50-500 g/L) from the aerial parts of S. officinalis. The essential oil was isolated from the tested raw material, and its composition was determined using GC-MS. Ethanolic extracts and essential oil have been tested for antibacterial activity. The extract in 70% v/v ethanol (dry extract content: 500 g/L) was subjected to HPLC analysis for the content of selected phenolic acids and an ex vivo skin permeation study. The ability of these metabolites to permeate and accumulate in the skin was analysed. Results: Extracts prepared at both ethanol concentrations showed similar antioxidant activity and TPC. Depending on the method, concentration of solvent, and dry extract content (50-500 g/L), the activity ranged from 1.97 to 84.54 g Trolox/L. TPC range of 3.80-37.04 g GA/L. Gallic acid (424 mg/L) and vanillic acid (270 mg/L) had the highest concentrations among the phenolic acids analysed. Vanillic acid (10 µg) permeates the skin at the highest concentration. The highest accumulation in the skin was found for 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (53 μg/g skin), 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (45 µg/g skin), and gallic acid (45 µg/g skin). The tested ethanolic extracts exhibited antibacterial activity. Samples with a dry extract concentration of 500 g/L showed the largest growth inhibition zones. The most sensitive strains to these extracts were P. aeruginosa (24 mm), S. lutea (23 mm), and S. pneumoniae (22 mm). The smallest inhibition zones were observed for B. subtilis (17 mm). The essential oil showed weaker antimicrobial activity (growth inhibition zone 8-10 mm). The GC-MS method identified 22 major components of the essential oil, including aliphatic hydrocarbons, unsaturated terpene alcohols, aliphatic aldehydes, unsaturated and saturated fatty acids, sesquiterpene, phytyl ester of linoleic acid, nitrogen compound, phytosterol, terpene ketone, phenylpropanoids, aliphatic alcohol, diterpenoid, aromatic aldehyde, and aliphatic carboxylic acid. Discussion: The conducted research has shown that ethanolic extracts from Sanguisorbae herba are a valuable source of compounds with antibacterial and antioxidant potential, including phenolic acids. The fact that selected phenolic acids contained in the tested extract have the ability to permeate and accumulate in the skin provides the basis for conducting extended research on the use of extracts from this plant raw material in cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations applied to the skin. In this study, the fatty acid content, phenolic compounds, and antimicrobial activity of seed oils from Ege Özbaş (EO), Sarıbağlar 407 (S407) and Akhisar 98 (A98) tobacco plants grown in the Aegean region were investigated. The ozonation process altered fatty acid and phenolic compound compositions and affected antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in the oils. Tobacco seed oils (TSOs) were extracted via cold pressing (CP) and Soxhlet extraction (SE). Fatty acids and phenolic compounds were analyzed using GC-FID and LC-MS/MS, respectively. Non-ozonated oils averaged 73% linoleic acid, 13% oleic acid, 9% palmitic acid, and 3% stearic acid, while ozonated oils contained 41% linoleic acid, 18% oleic acid, 22% palmitic acid, and 11% stearic acid. The presence of 33 phenolic compounds was investigated and 22 common phenolic compounds were detected in both ozonated and non-ozonated TSOs, including gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, 3-hydroxybenzoic acid, (-)-epicatechin, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, verbascoside, luteolin-7-glucoside, hesperidin, and rosmarinic acid. The increased antimicrobial activity of fatty acids and phenolic compounds following ozonation suggests the potential for developing creams to treat skin diseases and wounds caused by antibiotic-resistant pathogens, and to reduce the effects of aging skin wrinkles. Using new chlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, cryptochlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, isochlorogenic acid B, isochlorogenic acid A and isochlorogenic acid C in phenolic acids, as well as flavonoids such as brown cyanidin and isoxanthin, as indicators, the changes in the content of phenolic acids and flavonoids during the natural and accelerated aging processes of Wan Artemisiae argyi were studied using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that during the accelerated aging process, the content of most phenolic acids were increased and the flavonoid isoxanthin significantly increased, while the flavonoid brown cyanidin gradually decreased. During the natural aging process, the content of flavonoids such as brown cyanidin and isoxanthin were gradually increased, while phenolic acids varied with increasing aging time. Methods and results The strain of interest coded as B55 was isolated from cucumber root litter, and its degradation rates of ferulic acid and p -coumaric acid were 81.92% and 72.41% in Luria-Bertani solution, respectively, and B55 was identified as Bacillus subtilis. B55 had plant growth-promoting attributes, including solubilization of inorganic phosphate and production of siderophore and indole acetic acid. Both ferulic acid and p -coumaric acid significantly restrained an increase in cucumber seedling dry biomass, while the B55 inoculation not only completely counteracted the damage of phenolic acids to cucumber seedlings and decreased the content of ferulic acid and p -coumaric acid in soil, but also promoted cucumber seedlings growth. Amplicon sequencing found that B55 inoculation changed the cucumber rhizosphere bacterial community structure and promoted the enrichment of certain bacteria, such as Pseudomonas, Arthrobacter, Bacillus, Flavobacterium, Streptomyces , and Comamonas. Conclusions B55 not only promoted cucumber seedling growth, and decreased the content of ferulic acid and p -coumaric acid in soil, but it also increased the relative abundance of beneficial microorganisms in the cucumber rhizosphere. Coffee post-processing drying eliminates moisture content, reduces fungal and microbe growth, and develops unique aroma and flavor compounds. Thai coffee producers use controlled-environment drying (CED) techniques to improve the quality and cupping scores of the coffee. This research investigated how different drying methods, including sun drying (SD), controlled-environment drying at 20–30 °C, 50–55% RH, and fast drying (FD) at 30–45 °C influenced the physicochemical characteristics of coffee undergoing dry (DP), washed (WP), and honey (HP) processing. Results showed that true density, moisture content, water activity, color, caffeine, trigonelline, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, sucrose, and fructose in green coffee beans were significantly affected (p < 0.05) by both drying technique and post-harvest processing. Drying techniques and processing directly impacted the characteristics of green (GCB) and roasted coffee beans (RCB). Although post-distillation side-streams of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) pose significant economic and environmental challenges, they also bring forth new opportunities in the flavor industry. Thus, the objective of the current study was to assess the phenolic profile of basil side-stream extracts to identify key compounds and to evaluate their taste properties, using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis, flavor prediction tools and molecular docking. In particular, 52 phytoconstituents, mainly phenolic acids, salvianolic acids, flavonoids and fatty acids derivatives, were elucidated in the side-streams of two different basil varieties (Minimum and Genovese) harvested and distilled in early and late autumn, highlighting the effect of pre-harvest factors on basil's phenolic fingerprint. Furthermore, the results of tests undertaken using taste prediction tools showed that most of the identified compounds were very likely to taste bitter, while six of them (caffeoylferuloyltartaric acid, isoquercetin, lithospermic acid A, sagerinic acid, salvianolic acids C and F) presented a high bitterant capacity (70–90%). Moreover, according to molecular docking studies, these compounds exhibited a stronger binding affinity to the hTAS2R46 bitter receptor compared to its known agonist, strychnine. This outcome and consequently their bitterness were mainly attributed to interactions with Glu265, Thr180 and/or Trp88 through the formation of direct hydrogen bonds. Fungal diseases are a major threat to the horticultural industry and cause substantial postharvest losses. While secondary metabolites from Trichoderma sp. have been explored for their antifungal properties, limited information exists on the phenolic compounds produced by less studied species like Trichoderma longibrachiatum. In this study, phenolic compounds were extracted from a liquid culture of T. longibrachiatum using various solvents and methods (conventional and ultrasonic-assisted). Phenolic compounds were quantified by spectrophotometry and identified by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD). The antifungal activity against Alternaria alternata and Fusarium oxysporum was determined by mycelial growth inhibition assays, maximum growth rate (µmax) by the Gompertz equation, and spore germination tests. Although no significant differences (p ≥ 0.05) were found between the extraction methods, the type of solvent significantly influenced the phenolic content (p ≤ 0.05). Extraction with 70% ethanol showed the highest content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids. More than eight phenolic compounds were detected. Further, this is the first report of the phenolics ferulic, chlorogenic and p-coumaric acids identification in T. longibrachiatum, along with flavonoids such as epicatechin and quercetin, among others. The 70% ethanolic extracts notably inhibited the mycelial growth of A. alternata and F. oxysporum, reducing their maximum growth rate by 1.5 and 1.4 mm/h, respectively. Furthermore, p-coumaric and ferulic acids significantly inhibited spore germination of both pathogens, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1.5 mg/mL and a minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of 2 mg/mL. These findings demonstrate the potential of T. longibrachiatum and its phenolic compounds as viable alternatives for biological control in horticulture and postharvest disease management. Chronic liver injuries often lead to hepatic fibrosis, a condition characterized by excessive extracellular matrix accumulation and abnormal connective tissue hyperplasia. Without effective treatment, hepatic fibrosis can progress to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Current treatments, including liver transplantation, are limited by donor shortages and high costs. As such, there is an urgent need for effective therapeutic strategies. This review focuses on the potential of plant-based therapeutics, particularly polyphenols, phenolic acids, and flavonoids, in treating hepatic fibrosis. These compounds have demonstrated anti-fibrotic activities through various signaling pathways, including TGF-β/Smad, AMPK/mTOR, Wnt/β-catenin, NF-κB, PI3K/AKT/mTOR, and hedgehog pathways. Additionally, this review highlights the advancements in nanoparticulate drug delivery systems that enhance the pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, and therapeutic efficacy of these bioactive compounds. Methodologically, this review synthesizes findings from recent studies, providing a comprehensive analysis of the mechanisms and benefits of these plant-based treatments. Plants are a rich source of secondary metabolites, among which phenolics are the most abundant. To date, over 8000 various polyphenolic compounds have been identified in plant species, among which phenolic acids, flavonoids, coumarins, stilbenes and lignans are the most important ones. Acne is one of the most commonly treated dermatological diseases, among which acne vulgaris and rosacea are the most frequently diagnosed. In the scientific literature, there is a lack of a detailed scientific presentation and discussion on the importance of plant phenolics in the treatment of the most common specific skin diseases, e.g., acne. Therefore, the aim of this review is to gather, present and discuss the current state of knowledge on the activity of various plant phenolics towards the prevention and treatment of acne, including in vitro, in vivo and human studies. It was revealed that because of their significant antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, phenolic compounds may be used in the treatment of various types of acne, individually as well as in combination with commonly used drugs like clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide. Among the various phenolics that have been tested, EGCG, quercetin and nobiletin seem to be the most promising ones; however, more studies, especially clinical trials, are needed to fully evaluate their efficacy in treating acne. Botanical varieties of hemp differ in chemical composition, plant morphology, agronomy, and industrial suitability. Hemp is popular for cultivation for the production of cannabinoid oil, fiber production, biomass, etc. The fertilization process is one of the most important factors affecting the plant, both its condition and chemical composition. So far, research has been carried out proving that hemp is a valuable source of, among others: fatty acids, amino acids, acids, vitamins, numerous micro- and macroelements, and antioxidant compounds. In this experiment, it was decided to check the possibility of harvesting hemp panicles twice in one year. The purpose of this treatment is to use one plant to produce cannabidiol oil and grain. The main aim of the research was to determine bioactive compounds in hemp seeds and to determine whether the cultivation method affects their content and quantity. Based on the research conducted, it was observed that hemp can be grown in two directions at the same time and harvested twice because its health-promoting properties do not lose their value. It was found that regardless of whether hemp is grown solely for seeds or to obtain essential oils and then seeds, the type of fertilization does not affect the content of phenolic acids (e.g., syringic acid: 69.69–75.14 μg/100 g, vanillic acid: 1.47–1.63 μg/100 g). Based on the conducted research, it was found that essential oils can be obtained from one plant in the summer and seeds from Henola hemp cultivation in the autumn, because such a treatment does not affect the content of the discussed compounds. Spelt Triticum aestivum L. subsp. spelta (cv. Wirtas), einkorn Triticum monococcum L. (cv. Samopsza) and emmer Triticum dicoccum Schrank (Schuebl) (cv. Płaskurka biała and Płaskurka ciemna) spring wheat cultivars were analyzed and compared to common wheat Triticum aestivum L. subsp. aestivum (cv. Harenda, Kandela, Mandaryna, Serenada, Goplana, Kamelia, Nimfa, Rusałka, Struna, Zadra) cultivated in an organic production system. Moreover, the performance of four common wheat cultivars (cv. Harenda, Kandela, Mandaryna, Serenada) grown in organic, conventional and integrated production systems were compared. The UHPLC-DAD-MS and TLC-DPPH• analyses of specific substances (phenolic acids and alkylresorcinols) were evaluated to ascertain the potential of spring wheat cultivars for promoting human health and suitability for cultivation in an organic production system. The highest yield was observed for the T. aestivum L. subsp. aestivum (modern hull-less) cv. Nimfa (4.45 t/ha), which also demonstrated the lowest resistance to Fusarium spp. infection. Among the contemporary hull-less cultivars, cv. Mandaryna and cv. Harenda exhibited the highest resistance to this pathogen (2.4% and 3.7% of grains infected by Fusarium, respectively), while simultaneously displaying the highest organic phenolic acid content (900.92 and 984.55 µg/g of the grain) and the highest antioxidant potential. It is noteworthy that the cereal hulls of T. monococcum L. (old hulled) (cv. Samopsza) exhibited a markedly elevated content of phenolic acids (approximately 4000 µg/g of the grain). This may have contributed to the reduced incidence of Fusarium infection (9.3% of grains infected) observed in the grains of this cultivar. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) continue to be a major global health concern, representing a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. This review provides a comprehensive examination of CVDs, encompassing their pathophysiology, diagnostic biomarkers, advanced imaging techniques, pharmacological treatments, surgical interventions, and the emerging role of herbal remedies. The review covers various cardiovascular conditions such as coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, peripheral artery disease, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, cardiomyopathy, rheumatic heart disease, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, cerebrovascular diseases, and congenital heart defects. The review presents a wide range of cardiac biomarkers such as troponins, C-reactive protein, CKMB, BNP, NT-proBNP, galectin, adiponectin, IL-6, TNF-α, miRNAs, and oxylipins. Advanced molecular imaging techniques, including chest X-ray, ECG, ultrasound, CT, SPECT, PET, and MRI, have significantly enhanced our ability to visualize myocardial perfusion, plaque characterization, and cardiac function. Various synthetic drugs including statins, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, β-blockers, calcium channel blockers, antihypertensives, anticoagulants, and antiarrhythmics are fundamental in managing CVDs. Nonetheless, their side effects such as hepatic dysfunction, renal impairment, and bleeding risks necessitate careful monitoring and personalized treatment strategies. In addition to conventional therapies, herbal remedies have garnered attention for their potential cardiovascular benefits. Plant extracts and their bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, saponins, and alkaloids, offer promising cardioprotective effects and enhanced cardiovascular health. This review underscores the value of combining traditional and modern therapeutic approaches to improve cardiovascular outcomes. Key message: This study, using multi-omics combined with physiologic assays, found that calcium-ion signaling can regulate phenolic acid accumulation in R. chrysanthumleaves in response to UV-B stress. UV-B stress is a severe abiotic stress capable of destroying cellular structures and affecting plant growth. Rhododendron chrysanthum Pall. (R. chrysanthum) is a plant that has been exposed to high levels of UV-B radiation for an extended period, leading to the development of adaptive responses to mitigate UV-B stress. As such, it serves as a valuable experimental material for studying plant resilience to UV-B stress. We utilized R. chrysanthum as the experimental material and subjected it to UV-B stress. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the changes in R. chrysanthum under both control and UV-B stress conditions using multi-omic and physiologic assays. Our aim was to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying R. chrysanthum’s resistance to UV-B stress, with a focus on calcium-ion signaling. UV-B stress was found to impact the photosynthesis of R. chrysanthum by decreasing the maximum photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II, reducing Fm, and increasing F0. In addition, the composition of numerous phenolic acid compounds was significantly altered. Genes and proteins related to calcium signaling showed significant differences, with some proteins (CML, CPK1, CRK3, ATP2C, ERG3, CAR7) being modified by acetylation. The correlation between genes and proteins involved in calcium signaling and phenolic compounds suggested that calcium signaling may play a role in regulating the accumulation of phenolic compounds under UV-B stress to help R. chrysanthum adapt. This study examines the impact of calcium-ion signaling on the accumulation of phenolic acid compounds, offering insights for future research on the molecular mechanisms underlying plant resilience to UV-B stress. Summary: Sea buckthorn (SB) is used in cuisines and herbal remedies due to its remarkable nutritional composition and health‐enhancing properties. The phenolic compounds present in SB plant include phenolic acids (gallic, p‐coumaric, protocatechuic and ferulic acids), flavonols (isorhamnetin, quercetin and kaempferol), flavan‐3‐ols and polymeric procyanidins. The highest content of these compounds was reported in branches and leaves than corresponding edible parts of the plant. The antioxidant properties of SB are related to content and composition of phenolic compounds in different plant parts. The studies reported SB flavonoids (isorhamnetin and quercetin) as main phenolic compounds with medicinal potential and health‐promoting effects. The present review summarises information available in recent studies on phenolic composition, phenolic content, flavonoid content, antioxidant activity and health‐promoting activities (anti‐oxidant, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, anti‐inflammatory, anti‐diabetic and obesity management) of SB that can be used in curtailing various acute and chronic maladies. The economic competitiveness of 2G-bioethanol technology should improve through the improvement of the sugar release and the valorization of by-products, especially lignin. Thus, an integrated scheme with corncob was developed to produce ethanol using low dosages of cellulases and value-added products from the semi-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSSF) residue. Enzymatic hydrolysis and SSSF of acid pretreated corncob (< 20 mesh and > 20 mesh) were carried out under cellulase dosages of 5, 10, and 15 FPU/g in the absence and presence of polyethylene glycol 1500 (PEG 1500). The SSSF residue was used to obtain lignosulfonate via sulfomethylation reaction and phenolic acids via alkaline hydrolysis using 4% (w/v) sodium hydroxide and 0–5% (v/v) hydrogen peroxide. Pretreated corncob < 20 mesh allowed the reduction of cellulase dosage to 5 FPU/g without compromising sugar release. The addition of PEG 1500 boosted sugar release, reaching 56.73 g/L glucose under 20% (w/v) solids. The maximum ethanol production of 31.64 g/L was obtained using 5 FPU/g cellulases, 2% (w/w) PEG 1500, and 20% (w/v) solids (gradual addition). FTIR confirmed the preparation of lignosulfonate from SSSF residue, and the surfactant showed good stabilization performance in oil/water systems (emulsification index≈30%). High yields of p-coumaric acid (8045.3 mg/100 g) and ferulic acid (1429.4 mg/100 g) were obtained in alkaline hydrolysis with 5% (v/v) hydrogen peroxide. Wine pomace (WP) is a major byproduct generated during winemaking, and skin pomace (SKP) comprises one of the most valuable components of WP. Since SKP differs in composition and properties from seed pomace (SDP), precise knowledge of SKP will aid the wine industry in the development of novel, high-value products. The current review summarizes recent advances in research relating to SKP presents a comprehensive description of the generation, composition, and bioactive components, primarily focusing on the biological activities of SKP, including antioxidant, gastrointestinal health promotion, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and metabolic disease alleviation properties. Currently, the separation and recovery of skins and seeds is an important trend in the wine industry for the disposal of winemaking byproducts. In comparison to SDP, SKP is rich in polyphenols including anthocyanins, flavonols, phenolic acids, stilbenes, and some proanthocyanidins, as well as dietary fiber (DF). These distinctive benefits afford SKP the opportunity for further development and application. Accordingly, the health-promoting mechanism and appropriate application of SKP will be further elucidated in terms of physiological activity, with the progress of biochemical technology and the deepening of related research. Background: Black rice is rich in various nutrients, such as anthocyanins, which may undergo some changes during cooking. However, previous studies have been mainly focused on a single substance and paid less attention to the changes in overall nutrient components. Here, we performed widely targeted metabolomics analysis on the chemical compositional changes in a new black rice variety ('Huamoxiang No.3') under three cooking modes, including bottom heating (BH), induction heating (IH), and IH + pressure. Results: Among the detected 1458 metabolites, 276 and 108 metabolites were differential metabolites after cooking and in three cooking modes, respectively. Cooking increased the contents of most peptides, phenolic acids, and organic acid compounds but significantly decreased those of lipids and flavonoids, particularly anthocyanins. However, phenolic acids such as chlorogenic acid, erucic acid, and p‐coumaric acid increased significantly, possibly due to the release of bound phenols and degradation of flavonoids to phenolic acids, such as thermal degradation of C3G to protocatechuic acid and among the three heating modes, the IH + pressure mode resulted in the most significant changes. Conclusion: Although cooking reduced the content of flavonoids and anthocyanins, the increase in phenolic acids and other substances contributed to the healthy effect of cooked black rice, and the content of these active substances increased more significantly in the IH + pressure mode.
