Background: Epidemiological studies of long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution have consistently documented associations with morbidity and mortality. Air pollution exposure in these epidemiological studies is generally assessed at the residential address, because individual time-activity patterns are seldom known in large epidemiological studies. Ignoring time-activity patterns may result in bias in epidemiological studies. The aims of this paper are to assess the agreement between exposure assessed at the residential address and exposures estimated with time-activity integrated and the potential bias in epidemiological studies when exposure is estimated at the residential address. Main body: We reviewed exposure studies that have compared residential and time-activity integrated exposures, with a focus on the correlation. We further discuss epidemiological studies that have compared health effect estimates between the residential and time-activity integrated exposure and studies that have indirectly estimated the potential bias in health effect estimates in epidemiological studies related to ignoring time-activity patterns. A large number of studies compared residential and time-activity integrated exposure, especially in Europe and North America, mostly focusing on differences in level. Eleven of these studies reported correlations, showing that the correlation between residential address-based and time-activity integrated long-term air pollution exposure was generally high to very high (R > 0.8). For individual subjects large differences were found between residential and time-activity integrated exposures. Consistent with the high correlation, five of six identified epidemiological studies found nearly identical health effects using residential and time-activity integrated exposure. Six additional studies in Europe and North America showed only small to moderate potential bias (9 to 30% potential underestimation) in estimated exposure response functions using residence-based exposures. Differences of average exposure level were generally small and in both directions. Exposure contrasts were smaller for time-activity integrated exposures in nearly all studies. The difference in exposure was not equally distributed across the population including between different socio-economic groups. Conclusions: Overall, the bias in epidemiological studies related to assessing long-term exposure at the residential address only is likely small in populations comparable to those evaluated in the comparison studies. This study investigates magnetic flux density (B) and radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) measurements on electric buses operating in Samsun, Turkey, focusing on two bus routes (called E1 and E4) during the morning and evening hours. Measurements were taken under diverse operational conditions, including acceleration, cruising, and braking, at locations of peak passenger density. Along the E1 route, the magnetic field intensity varied significantly based on the bus position, road slope, and passenger load, with notable increases during braking. In contrast, the E4 route showed a lower magnetic field intensity and RF-EMF values due to its straighter trajectory and reduced operational stops. The highest RF-EMF measurement recorded was 6.01 V/m, which is below the maximum levels established by the ICNIRP guidelines. In 11 out of the 12 different band-selective RF-EMF measurements, the highest contribution came from the downlink band of the base stations, while in only one measurement, the highest contribution originated from the uplink bands of the base stations. All data were subject to the Anderson–Darling test, confirming the generalized extreme value distribution as the best fit for both B and RF-EMF measurements. Additionally, the study assessed B levels inside and outside the bus during charging, revealing heightened readings near the pantograph. These findings significantly contribute to our understanding of electromagnetic field exposure in electric bus environments, highlighting potential health implications and informing the development of targeted mitigation strategies. There is a growing need in public health to conduct large-scale epidemiological studies to investigate the health effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure levels. In response to this need, we developed a real-time personal PM2.5 exposure monitoring system (PEPS: Personal Exposure PM2.5 System), which is capable of monitoring personal exposure concentration and uploading data in real time. The air quality self-labelling device, specifically customized for the PEPS, can be worn on the body and features functions for real-time data automatic upload, data storage, data export, and localization. This system enables researchers to obtain the big data of personal PM2.5 exposure concentration at low cost, with minimal manpower and technical requirements. It has been utilized to investigate the personal exposure levels of PM2.5 among college students in Beijing, China, providing a substantial volume of valuable data for indoor air quality and related epidemiological study. The maximum difference between the monitored daily average exposure concentration and the outdoor concentration was 265 µg/m3, corresponding to a relative error of 1579.5%. The correlation analysis of 11 factors showed that the correlation between exposure concentration and outdoor concentration was as high as 0.66 (p < 0.001), and the correlation between exposure concentration and other certain factors was in the range of [−0.11, −0.03]. Pollution data were collected at five schools in Hong Kong using low-cost, sensor-based monitors both indoors and outdoors during two consecutive high pollution episodes. The pollutants monitored included NO2, O3, PM2.5, and PM10, which were also used as input to a health risk communication protocol known as Air Quality Health Index (AQHI). CO2 was also measured simultaneously. The study aimed to assess the relationship between indoor pollutant concentrations and AQHI levels with those outdoors and to evaluate the efficacy of building operating practices in protecting students from pollution exposure. The results indicate that the regular air quality monitoring stations and outdoor pollutant levels at schools exhibit similar patterns. School AQHI levels indoors were generally lower than those outdoors, with PM10 levels showing a larger proportional contribution to the calculated values indoors. NO2 levels in one school were in excess of outdoor values. CO2 monitored in classrooms commonly exceeded indoor guidelines, suggesting poor ventilation. One school that employed air filtration had lower indoor PM concentrations compared to other schools; however, they were still similar to those outdoors. O3 levels indoors were consistently lower than those outdoors. This study underscores the utility of on-site, sensor-based monitoring for assessing the health impacts of indoor and community exposure to urban air pollutants. This study aimed to measure personal exposure to sulfuric acid in the electroplating industry to establish a predictive model and test its validation. We collected indoor air parameters and related information from four electroplating plants. Silica gel sorbents were used to collect air samples using high-performance ion chromatography. We collected air samples from three plants (i.e., Plant B, Plant C, and Plant D) and applied multiple linear regressions to build a predictive model. Eight samples collected from the fourth plant (i.e., Plant A) were used to validate the model. A total of 41 samples were collected with a mean of 25.0 ± 9.8 μg/m3 (range 12.1–51.7 μg/m3) in this study, including Plant A (8 samples, 17.5 ± 2.8 μg/m3, 13.0–22.0 μg/m3), Plant B (11 samples, 36.5 ± 9.7 μg/m3, 23.1–51.7 μg/m3), Plant C (11 samples, 16.4 ± 1.7 μg/m3, 12.1–17.8 μg/m3), and Plant D (11 samples, 27.4 ± 1.7 μg/m3, 24.1–29.9 μg/m3). Plant B was significantly higher in sulfuric acid than the other plants. Workers from the electroplating process plants were exposed to sulfuric acid at 29.0 ± 11.5 μg/m3. The predictive model for personal exposure to sulfuric acid fit the data well (r2 = 0.853; adjusted r2 = 0.837) and had an accuracy of 5.52 μg/m3 (bias ± precision; 4.98 ± 2.38 μg/m3), validated by the personal sampling of the fourth plant. This study observed that sulfuric acid exposure was lower than the permissible exposure level of 1000 μg/m3 in Taiwan and the United States, and only two samples were lower than the European Union standard of 50 μg/m3. The Barcelona Life Study Cohort (BiSC) is a research project that aims to investigate the impact of environmental factors on maternal and child health and development. The cohort consists of 1080 pregnant women who were recruited between October 2018 and April 2021 in Barcelona, Spain. Data collection includes a wide range of demographic, lifestyle, and exposure information, as well as mental and physical health outcomes. The study conducts multiple follow-ups with participants during pregnancy and postnatal periods, collecting comprehensive data on various variables. The data collected includes information on sociodemographic characteristics, exposures and lifestyle, medical history, clinical data, mental health, physical examination, biological samples, home characteristics, and cognitive tests. The study also collects data during home visits, including information on air pollution, noise, temperature, humidity, physical activity, and geolocation. The study has a high participation rate, with 828 participants remaining in the cohort at the 18-month follow-up. The data collected in the study is valuable for researchers studying various aspects of health and environmental factors in Barcelona. The study faced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in missing data and limitations in data collection, but it also provided an opportunity to evaluate the interaction between socio-environmental factors and maternal and child health. The heavy metals and bioreactivity properties of endotoxin in personal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were characterized in the analysis. The average personal exposure concentrations to PM2.5 were ranged from 6.8 to 96.6 μg/m3. The mean personal PM2.5 concentrations in spring, summer, autumn, and winter were 32.1±15.8, 22.4±11.8, 35.3±11.9, and 50.2±19.9 μg/m3, respectively. There were 85 % of study targets exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) PM2.5 threshold (24 hours). The mean endotoxin concentrations ranged from 1.086 ± 0.384–1.912 ± 0.419 EU/m3, with a geometric mean (GM) varied from 1.034 to 1.869. The concentration of iron (Fe) (0.008–1.16 μg/m3) was one of the most abundant transition metals in the samples that could affect endotoxin toxicity under Toll-Like Receptor 4 (TLR4) stimulation. In summer, the interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels showed statistically significant differences compared to other seasons. Spearman correlation analysis showed endotoxin concentrations were positively correlated with chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni), implying possible roles as nutrients and further transport via adhering to the surface of fine inorganic particles. Mixed-effects model analysis demonstrated that Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) production was positively associated with endotoxin concentration and Cr as a combined exposure factor. The Cr contained the highest combined effect (0.205–0.262), suggesting that Cr can potentially exacerbate the effect of endotoxin on inflammation and oxidative stress. The findings will be useful for practical policies for mitigating air pollution to protect the public health of the citizens.

AbstractLimiting human exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields in crowded indoor public spaces such as shopping malls, is identified as one of the key metrics in the process of green and digital environment transformation. To assess the exposure levels in shopping malls, we conducted a human centric extensive measurement campaign using three-axial frequency selective measurement equipment. Our study involved various indoor locations within the mall, capturing electrical field levels at different times and days of the week. A total of 529,340 samples were collected during working days, and 430,020 samples were collected during weekends. We measured E-field strength, power density, and calculated total exposures for frequency bands ranging from 88 MHz to 5850 MHz. The presented comparative analysis revealed that mobile communications technologies operating at 900 MHz and 1800 MHz were the main contributors to personal exposure levels in different mall environments.

Background: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure is an important environmental risk for maternal and children's health, with peak exposures especially those derived from primary combustion hypothesized to pose greater risk. Identifying PM2.5 peaks and their contributions to personal exposure remains challenging. This study measured personal PM2.5 exposure, characterized primary combustion peaks, and investigated their determinants during and after pregnancy and among Hispanic women in Los Angeles, CA. Methods: Continuous personal PM2.5 exposure, Global Positioning System geolocation, and ecological momentary assessment surveys were collected from 63 women for 4 consecutive days in their 1st trimester, 3rd trimester and 4–6 months postpartum. Based on the shape of PM2.5 time-series, primary combustion peaks were identified, characterized (number, duration, area under the curve [AUC]), and linked with locations they occurred in. Zero-inflated generalized mixed-effect models were used to examine the spatial and temporal determinants of PM2.5 peak exposures. Results: A total of 490 PM2.5 peaks were identified from 618 person-days of monitoring. Spending an additional minute at parks and open spaces was related to smaller (AUC decreased 3.1 %, 95 % CI: 1.5 %–4.6 %) and shorter (duration decreased 1.7 %, 0.5 %–2.9 %) PM2.5 peak exposure. An additional minute in vehicular trips also related to smaller and shorter peak exposure (AUC and duration decreased 2.5 %, 1.2 %–3.7 % and 1.8 %, 1.0 %–2.6 %, respectively). However, an additional minute at industrial locations was associated with greater number (3.6 %, 2.0 %–5.2 %), AUC (1.6 %, 0.1 %–3.2 %) and duration (1.0 %, 0.0 %–2.1 %) of personal PM2.5 peak exposure. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the potential to statistically identify exposure to primary combustion PM2.5 peaks and understand their determinants from personal monitoring data. Results suggest that visits to parks and open spaces may minimize PM2.5 peak exposures, while visiting industrial locations may increase them in and around pregnancy.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory autoimmune demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system, leading to progressive functional impairments. Predicting disease progression with a probabilistic and time-dependent approach might help suggest interventions for a better management of the disease. Recently, there has been increasing focus on the impact of air pollutants as environmental factors influencing disease progression. This study employs a Continuous-Time Markov Model (CMM) to explore the impact of air pollution measurements on MS progression using longitudinal data from MS patients in Italy between 2013 and 2022. Preliminary findings indicate a relationship between air pollution and MS progression, with pollutants like Particulate Matter with a diameter of 10 micrometers (PM10) or 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), and Carbon Monoxide (CO) showing potential effects on disease activity. In livestock houses, particulate matter (PM) is a critical factor not only for disease and odor spread but also for the work environment. In particular, workers are exposed to high concentrations of organic particulate matter and harmful gases while performing their tasks, and, as they age, they become more vulnerable to respiratory diseases. This study analyzed the PM concentrations in commercial broiler houses, focusing on the differences in ventilation rates according to the season and the type of work, categorized into a static work period (SWP) and dynamic work period (DWP). In the regional monitoring using gravimetric methods, the average PM concentrations were found to be within acceptable limits, with TSP at 1042 µg/m3, PM-10 at 718 µg/m3, and PM-2.5 at 137 µg/m3. These values did not exceed the recommended exposure limits for inhalable dust at 2400 µg/m3 and respirable dust at 160 µg/m3 in chicken farmers. However, in the personal monitoring using a real-time aerosol spectrometer, it was revealed that the aerosol concentrations during DWP exceeded the standards by up to 214%. Specifically, during DWP, the concentrations were 1.74 times higher for TSP, 1.40 times higher for PM-10, and 1.22 times higher for PM-2.5 compared to SWP. It was observed that during the movement of workers, the physical generation of particles around 10 µm, such as feed and bedding, occurred due to the movement of chickens, which influenced the aerosol concentration. We assessed whether personal exposure to household air pollution [PM2.5 and black carbon (BC)] is associated with lung functions (FEV1, FVC, and their ratio) in non-smoking adults in rural Bangladesh. We measured personal exposure to PM2.5 using gravimetric analysis of PM2.5 mass and BC by reflectance measurement between April 2016 and June 2019. The average 24-hour PM2.5 and BC concentration was 141.0μgm−3 and 13.8μgm−3 for females, and 91.7 μgm−3 and 10.1 μgm−3 for males, respectively. A 1 μgm−3 increase in PM2.5 resulted in a 0.02 ml reduction in FEV1, 0.43 ml reduction in FVC, and 0.004% reduction in FEV1/FVC. We also found a similar inverse relationship between BC and lung functions (9.6 ml decrease in FEV1 and 18.5 ml decrease in FVC per 1μgm−3 increase in BC). A higher proportion of non-smoking biomass fuel users (50.1% of the females and 46.7% of the males) had restrictive patterns of lung function abnormalities, which need further exploration. The utilization of solid fuels remains a significant contributor to air pollution, with well-documented adverse health consequences. In rural regions, the prevalence of solid fuel use for heating and cooking plays a pivotal role in shaping local air quality. This study focuses on evaluating personal exposure to gaseous pollutants originating from restaurants situated in Karunya Nagar, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. The study design considers establishments that use distinct energy sources, with a particular emphasis on those employing wood and liquefied petroleum gas. We measure the concentration of various pollutants, including particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM10), carbon dioxide, formaldehyde, and total volatile organic carbon, utilizing advanced sensor technology. The levels of these pollutants are influenced by various factors, such as ventilation, chimney placement, stove type, fuel selection, time of exposure, frequency of exposure, and toxicity. Notably, our findings reveal that restaurants using wood as a cooking fuel tend to release higher quantities of gaseous pollutants compared to those employing liquefied petroleum gas. In addition to quantitative measurements, we employ comprehensive chemical characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, to delineate the morphology, chemical composition, and other essential properties of the emitted particulate matter. Our study sheds light on the potential health repercussions faced by rural residents who heavily rely on solid domestic fuels. The insights derived from this research not only contribute to the reduction of air pollution exposure but also facilitate the development of exposure assessment models for forthcoming epidemiological investigations. The particle number concentration (PNC), particulate matter (PM1) and black carbon (BC) mass concentration limits are not available from standard air quality monitoring networks as well as for indoor level standards in many countries. Total personal exposure is often disproportionately affected by the relatively short amount of time spent in office spaces and commuting trips. In this study, real-time measurements of PNC, PM1, and BC mass concentrations in the office and during commuting trips were performed to assess real-time employee personal exposure. Urban environments are very complex due to the different emission sources and their emission activities; therefore, a combination of mobile and stationary measurements allows for a better understanding of their dynamics and employee exposure, constituting a better predictor of health effects. Mobile measurements at the street level showed that the BC mass concentrations were the highest during peak hours, reaching up to 7.14 µg/m3 at hotspots. The hourly mean BC mass concentration in March 2022 at the urban background station ranged from 0.30 to 9.01 µg/m3, with traffic-related BC (BCtr) accounting for 66% of the total BC mass concentration. The highest minute deposition dose of BC (MDDBC) occurred during the morning rush hour at 53 ng/min and in the evening at 26 ng/min. These findings reveal the impact of traffic exhaust emissions on aerosol particles, particularly on fine particles. Marked differences were found between the MDDBC in the office and the vehicle micro-environment. The deposition dose in the office micro-environment was 11 ng/min. The results from the multi-path particle dosimetry model indicate that almost half of the inhaled BC mass 39.2% was deposited in the lowest part of the respiratory system, the lung-pulmonary region. Urban populations, especially women, are vunerable to exposure to airborne pollution, particularly inhalable particulates (PM10). Thus, more accurate measurement of PM10 levels and evaluating their health effects is critical for guiding policy to improve human health. Previous studies obtained personal PM10 with time-weighted average by air filter-based sampling (AFS), which ignores individual differences and behavioral patterns. Here, we used nasal filters instead of AFS to obtain actual inhaled PM10 under short-term exposure for urban dwelling women during a severe haze event in Beijing in 2016. The levels of six heavy metals such as As, Cd, Ni, Cr, Pb, and Co in PM10 were investigated, and carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks evaluated based on an adjusted US EPA health risk assessment model. The health endpoints for urban dwelling women were further assessed through an exposure-reponse model. We found that the hourly inhaled dose of PM10 obtained through the nasal filter was about 2.5–17.6 times that obtained by AFS, which also resulted in 4.41–11.30 times more morbidity than estimated by AFS (p 18.8 μg/kg·h) and heavy metals (>2.2 ng/kg·h), and these populations are therefore at greatest risk of developing non-cancer (HI = 4.16) and cancer (Rt = 7.8 × 10−3) related morbities.

Background. Personal exposure is a crucial aspect of digital socialization. It pertains to the amount of time spent on social networks, the number of active accounts, interactions on different platforms, the content published on social networks, the purpose for which the content is shared, the degree of personal exposure, and the changes in social life caused by the exposure. Gender plays an important role in predicting online behavior, but previous studies have yielded contradictory results. Objective. To characterize personal exposure to social media in young Cubans (networks used, hours of exposure, published content, how much of one's private life is exposed, alterations due to its use). To define the differences in personal exposure based on the gender variable. Design. A survey specifically created for this research was used. The sample was composed of 3345 young Cuban residents between 18 and 35 years old. Results. The young people spent a considerable amount of time per day on WhatsApp, Instagram*, and Facebook/Messenger*. Users shared content related to humor, music/art, and their personal lives. These interactions served as a source of entertainment, a means of communication and socialization, and a platform for expressing opinions on various topics. Personal content was shared frequently. The young people reported experiencing disturbances such as family demands, decreased attention span, difficulty sleeping, and decreased social interactions. There were gender differences in the level of personal exposure, with females reporting higher levels of exposure. Conclusion.There are high levels of personal exposure among Cuban youth. Different qualities are manifested according to gender. Females reflect the highest levels of personal exposure.

A total of 41 samples were collected with a mean of 25.0 ± 9.8 μg/m3 (range 12.1–51.7 μg/m3) in this study, including Plant A (8 samples, 17.5 ± 2.8 μg/m3, 13.0–22.0 μg/m3), Plant B (11 samples, 36.5 ± 9.7 μg/m3, 23.1–51.7 μg/m3), Plant C (11 samples, 16.4 ± 1.7 μg/m3, 12.1–17.8 μg/m3), and Plant D (11 samples, 27.4 ± 1.7 μg/m3, 24.1–29.9 μg/m3). Plant B was significantly higher in sulfuric acid than the other plants. Workers from the electroplating process plants were exposed to sulfuric acid at 29.0 ± 11.5 μg/m3. The predictive model for personal exposure to sulfuric acid fit the data well (r2 = 0.853; adjusted r2 = 0.837) and had an accuracy of 5.52 μg/m3 (bias ± precision; 4.98 ± 2.38 μg/m3), validated by the personal sampling of the fourth plant. This study observed that sulfuric acid exposure was lower than the permissible exposure level of 1000 μg/m3 in Taiwan and the United States, and only two samples were lower than the European Union standard of 50 μg/m3. The developed model can be applied in epidemiological studies to predict personal exposure to sulfuric acid in plants using electroplating.

This comprehensive paper conducts an in-depth review of personal exposure and air pollutant levels within the microenvironments of Asian city transportation. Our methodology involved a systematic analysis of an extensive body of literature from diverse sources, encompassing a substantial quantity of studies conducted across multiple Asian cities. The investigation scrutinizes exposure to various pollutants, including particulate matters (PM10, PM2.5, and PM1), carbon dioxide (CO2), formaldehyde (CH2O), and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), during transportation modes such as car travel, bus commuting, walking, and train rides. Notably, our review reveals a predominant focus on PM2.5, followed by PM10, PM1, CO2, and TVOC, with limited attention given to CH2O exposure. Across the spectrum of Asian cities and transportation modes, exposure concentrations exhibited considerable variability, a phenomenon attributed to a multitude of factors. Primary sources of exposure encompass motor vehicle emissions, traffic dynamics, road dust, and open bus doors. Furthermore, our findings illuminate the influence of external environments, particularly in proximity to train stations, on pollutant levels inside trains. Crucial factors affecting exposure encompass ventilation conditions, travel-specific variables, seat locations, vehicle types, and meteorological influences. The culmination of this rigorous review underscores the need for standardized measurements, enhanced ventilation systems, air filtration mechanisms, the adoption of clean energy sources, and comprehensive public education initiatives aimed at reducing pollutant exposure within city transportation microenvironments. The proximity of fuel stations to the roads and the activities inside the station can contribute to PM and VOCs and impose health risks on station workers. The study presents the exposure and health risk assessment of the fuel station personnel to total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) and particulate matter (PM) during refueling operations. TVOCs and PM monitoring were carried out at a fuel station in Chennai, India, for 1 week in March 2021, covering both weekdays and weekends. The health risks were assessed using EPA's health impact assessment methodology. Exposure to TVOCs (3177.39 ± 5450.32 μg/m3) exceeded the EPA standard of 5 μg/m3, by more than 500 times, peaking during refueling operations. The average concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 were 76.55 ± 23.08 μg/m3, 41.81 ± 9 μg/m3, and 30.38 ± 7.56 μg/m3, respectively. The concentrations were observed to be high during morning and evening hours due to the increased traffic on the adjacent road and inside the fuel station. The synergistic health risks linked with long-term exposure to high concentrations of BTEX and PM were also estimated. At the fuel station, a significant contribution to the SOA formation potential was shown by toluene, followed by m-xylene, p-xylene, o-xylene, ethylbenzene, and benzene. Furthermore, the deposition of airborne particles in the workers' respiratory tract was calculated using the Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry model while considering the daily average exposure duration of 12 h. The results showed that 59% of PM10 particles were deposited in the head region, whereas 11% and 10% of PM2.5 and PM1 particles were deposited in the pulmonary region. Hence, the health risk assessment indicated no non-cancer risk of exposure to PM (hazard quotient = 0.13) to station personnel exposed regularly for 1 year. However, prolonged exposure to VOCs for more than 1 year can result in both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk (hazard quotient = 0.045 and cancer risk > 10−6) in workers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

However, the evidence on adverse health effects caused by exposure to PAHs emitted from specific sources among different vulnerable subpopulations is limited. In this cross‐sectional study, we aimed to evaluate whether exposure to source‐specific PAHs could increase systemic inflammation in older adults. The present study included community‐dwelling older adults and collected filter samples of personal exposure to PM2.5 during the winter of 2011. Blood samples were collected after the PM2.5 sample collection. We analyzed PM2.5 bound PAHs and serum inflammatory cytokines (interleukin (IL)1β, IL6, and tumor necrosis factor alpha levels. The Positive Matrix Factorization model was used to identify PAH sources. We used a linear regression model to assess the relative effects of source‐specific PM2.5 bound PAHs on the levels of measured inflammatory cytokines. After controlling for confounders, exposure to PAHs emitted from biomass burning or diesel vehicle emission was significantly associated with increased serum inflammatory cytokines and systemic inflammation. These findings highlight the importance of considering exposure sources in epidemiological studies and controlling exposures to organic materials from specific sources. The effect of short-term exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the respiratory system among healthy residents is unclear. Beijing and Baoding are typical polluted cities in China, and there is little research on PAH exposure and its health effects at the individual level. Fourteen healthy female office workers were recruited in urban Beijing and Baoding, China, in 2019. The personal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5)-bound PAHs and lung function were seasonally monitored. The relationships between PAH exposure and lung function were determined by a generalized mixed linear model. Subjects were exposed to high levels of PAH, in which the benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) level (1.26 ng/m3) was over than Chinese national indoor standard (1 ng/m3). All PAHs concentration was higher in winter than that in summer and autumn. Only benz[a]anthracene (BaA) and chrysene (Chr) exposure showed weak relations with decreased lung function, i.e., a 0.58% and 0.73% decrease in peak expiratory flow at lag 2 day, respectively (p < 0.05). PAHs may not be suitable exposure indicators for short-term change in lung function. Our findings highlight the importance of reducing PAH pollution for public respiratory health protection in heavy-polluted cities of China. This pilot study also provides experience on personal PAH assessment such as estimation of the number of repeated measurements required, which is helpful to determine the relationship between PAH exposure and health effect. Carbon nanotube (CNT) sensors provide a versatile chemical platform for ambient monitoring of ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), two important airborne pollutants known to cause acute respiratory and cardiovascular health problems. CNTs have shown great potential for use as sensing layers due to their unique properties, including high surface to volume ratio, numerous active sites and crystal facets with high surface reactivity, and high thermal and electrical conductivity. With operational advantages such as compactness, low-power operation, and easy integration with electronics devices, nanotechnology is expected to have a significant impact on portable low-cost environmental sensors. Enhanced sensitivity is feasible by functionalizing the CNTs with polymers, metals, and metal oxides. This paper focuses on the design and performance of a two-element array of O3 and NO2 sensors comprising single-walled CNTs functionalized by covalent modification with organic functional groups. Unlike the conventional chemiresistor in which the change in DC resistance across the sensor terminals is measured, we characterize the sensor array response by measuring both the magnitude and phase of the AC impedance. Multivariate response provides higher degrees of freedom in sensor array data processing. The complex impedance of each sensor is measured at 5 kHz in a controlled gas-flow chamber using gas mixtures with O3 in the 60–120 ppb range and NO2 between 20 and 80 ppb. The measured data reveal response change in the 26–36% range for the O3 sensor and 5–31% for the NO2 sensor. Multivariate optimization is used to fit the laboratory measurements to a response surface mathematical model, from which sensitivity and selectivity are calculated. The ozone sensor exhibits high sensitivity (e.g., 5 to 6 MΩ/ppb for the impedance magnitude) and high selectivity (0.8 to 0.9) for interferent (NO2) levels below 30 ppb. BackgroundExposure assessment is critical for connecting environmental pollutants to health outcomes and evaluating impacts of interventions or environmental policies. Silicone wristbands (SWBs) show promise for multi-pollutant exposure assessment, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a ubiquitous class of toxic environmental pollutants.ObjectiveTo review published studies where SWBs were worn on the wrist for human environmental exposure assessments and evaluate the ability of SWBs to capture personal exposures, identify gaps which need to be addressed to implement this tool, and make recommendations for future studies to advance the field of exposure science through utilization of SWBs.MethodsWe performed a systematic search and a cited reference search in Scopus and extracted key study descriptions.ResultsThirty-nine unique studies were identified, with analytes including PAHs, pesticides, flame retardants, and tobacco products. SWBs were shipped under ambient conditions without apparent analyte loss, indicating utility for global exposure and health studies. Nineteen articles detected a total of 60 PAHs in at least one SWB. Correlations with other concurrent biological and air measurements indicate the SWB captures exposure to flame retardants, tobacco products, and PAHs.SignificanceSWBs show promise as a simple-to-deploy tool to estimate environmental and occupational exposures to chemical mixtures, including PAHs.

Assessment of integrated personal exposure (PE) to airborne particulate matter (PM) across diverse microenvironments (MEs) over 24 hours under different exposure scenarios is necessary to identify appropriate strategies to improve urban air quality and mitigate the health effects of PM. We carried out a collaborative study in a densely populated city-state (Singapore) to assess the integrated PE to fine particles (PM2.5), ultrafine particles (UFPs) and black carbon (BC) across diverse indoor and outdoor urban MEs, estimate related health risks and make suitable recommendations for healthy living in cities. Two volunteers with different lifestyles participated in the study by tracking their PE to particulate air pollution and the time-activity patterns over 24 hours using portable PM monitoring devices and recording their whereabouts using GPS coordinates. Home, transport and recreation (i.e., food court) MEs represented pollution hotspots of PM2.5 (21.0 μg/m3), BC (3.4 μg/m3) and UFP (33.0 × 103 #/cm3), respectively. Among the different modes of transport used by the participants (walking, cycling, e-scooter, mass rapid transport (MRT), bus, car and taxi), the air pollutants had elevated concentrations while commuting by public transport (bus and MRT) as well as during active modes of transport (walking and cycling). Air-conditioned cars and taxis, equipped with air filtration systems, represented the lowest PE. The health risk assessment revealed that there are potential carcinogenic risks associated with the long-term exposure to elevated levels of PM2.5-bound toxic trace elements. These risks can be mitigated with the introduction of low-carbon and active modes of transport in place of internal combustion engines and the use of indoor air pollution exposure mitigation devices.

Schoolchildren are sensitive to airborne aldehyde exposures. The knowledge regarding inhalation exposure to aldehydes and the factors influencing exposure in schoolchildren is limited. This study aimed to assess the variability and potential health risks of exposure to aldehydes (including formaldehyde) in schoolchildren. The important factors affecting personal exposure to aldehydes were also explored. Forty schoolchildren were recruited from the urban and suburban areas of Taiwan for aldehyde samplings and questionnaire surveys. Personal and indoor home samples of aldehydes were collected simultaneously during warm and cold seasons. We also identified the potential variables associated with aldehyde exposure based on the participant's responses to the questionnaires using mixed-effects models. The dominant three abundant aldehydes identified in personal exposure samples were formaldehyde (geometric mean, GM = 12.2 µg/m3), acetaldehyde (GM = 5.53 µg/m3), and hexaldehyde (GM = 8.79 µg/m3), accounting for approximately 80% of the total selected aldehydes. Higher personal exposure to aldehydes was observed during the warm season. Moreover, the within-subject variance was predominant, accounting for 66.6 to > 99.9% of the total variance in exposure. Schoolchildren had a high probability of overexposure to formaldehyde and acrolein, which resulted in an incremental lifetime cancer risk of 1.59 × 10−4 (95th percentile = 4.64 × 10−4). Season, location, household refurbishment, and indoor ventilation variables were significantly associated with personal exposure to aldehydes. The results can improve our understanding of aldehyde exposure among schoolchildren to propose mitigation strategies. These findings may be applied to further epidemiological studies. In this comprehensive research study, the occupational exposure levels of subway personnel employed in underground metro stations and personal exposure levels of passengers commuting by metro trains to airborne pollutants were investigated. The factors leading to deteriorating indoor air quality due to greater concentrations of air pollutants were also identified. For this reason, a field study was conducted in Chennai, India during both dry and wet climatic conditions. Indoor air pollutants, particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, and PM1), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), bacteria, and fungi along with thermal indicators, temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), and air velocity (VA) were monitored in 7 underground metro stations and inside trains. The occupational exposure to PM, CO2, and CO were within the ACGIH-TLV limits, whereas, subway staff's exposure to PM10, PM2.5, TVOC, bacteria, and fungi was found to be 2 – 4 times higher than the recommended health-based safe exposure threshold limits set by WHO and ISHRAE. In contrast, passengers' exposure was 1.5 – 3 times higher than recommended limits for PM2.5, TVOC, and bacteria. An increase in PM10, PM2.5, and TVOC exposure concentrations up to 50 µg/m3, 15 µg/m3, and 30 ppb was observed, respectively in the metro stations due to the continuous operation of trains and the movement of passengers. In subway stations, exposure to fine airborne particles in the range of 0.225 – 0.38 µm was dominant. Higher levels of exposure to PM were observed in the winter season than in summer. Higher levels of exposure to bioaerosols in metro stations during peak hours indicated the impact of increased passenger activity. Also, in metro platforms, T, RH, and VA exceeded the acceptable limits stipulated by ASHRAE. Thermal indicators were found to be a significant factor impacting concentrations of PM, TVOC, and bioaerosols. Finally, risk assessment indicated that 3 y (based on an 8 h shift for subway personnel) and 6 y (based on a 2 h commute for subway passengers) of continuous exposure to noxious air pollutants, PM10, PM2.5, TVOC, bacteria, and fungi would increase the likelihood of developing a lifetime average cancer risk. In 2019, the Government of Mexico City implemented actions that allowed citizens to approach a free Wi-Fi hotspot, where more than 13000 points have been installed throughout the city. In this work, we present the results of the measurements of personal exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields carried out in Plaza de la Constitución, better known as Zócalo located in the center of Mexico City. The measurements were taken by one of the researchers while walking on a weekday morning and afternoon, in different microenvironments (on the street, on public transport: subway, at the Zócalo, and finally, at home). We also carry out spot measurements in the center of the Zócalo. Subsequently, we carried out a comparative analysis of the different microenvironments, through box plot and violin plot, and we elaborate georeferenced and interpolated maps with intensity levels through the Kriging method, using the Geographic Information System. The Kriging interpolation gives us a good visualization of the spatial distribution of RF-EMF exposure in the study area, showing the highest and lowest intensity levels. The mean values recorded at the measured points in the Zócalo were 326 μW/m2 in the 2.4- to 2.5-GHz Wi-Fi band and 2370 μW/m2 in the 5.15- to 5.85-GHz Wi-Fi band. In the case of the mean values recorded on the street, they were 119 μW/m2 in the 2.4- to 2.5-GHz frequency band and 31.8 μW/m2 in the 5.15- to 5.85-GHz frequency band, like the values recorded at home, 122 μW/m2 and 33.9 μW/m2, respectively. The fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emitted during cooking is a significant contributor to household air pollution in rural China, resulting in millions of premature deaths annually. Since cooking is an internal pollution source, the indoor concentration of cooking-generated PM2.5 can vary among different rooms in multizone rural residences. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of indoor PM2.5 from cooking in rural residences by utilizing on-site investigations to gather information on cooking behavior and dwelling layout in three Chinese villages, and subsequently simulating indoor spatiotemporal concentrations of cooking-generated PM2.5 using a multizone model. Our findings indicate that the type of zone significantly influences the zonal concentration of PM2.5, with the highest concentrations found in kitchens (i.e., 13.9 to 188.0 µg/m3) and lowest in non-adjacent zones to the kitchen (i.e., 0.01 to 7.5 µg/m3) among all the modeled conditions. More importantly, the study also assesses the resulting personal exposures for occupants with different time-spent patterns, revealing that the main cook at home and preferring to stay in the adjacent rooms to the kitchen are at the highest risk for personal exposure. The highest personal exposure levels of cooking-generated PM2.5 are 28.5 ± 30.1 µg/m3, which is 34 times that of occupants who stay away from the kitchen. The study provides a deeper scientific insight into the indoor spatial distribution and personal exposure to cooking-generated PM2.5 in rural residences, which is crucial for developing effective interventions to mitigate the detrimental health impacts of household air pollution in rural areas. Currently, traffic-related sources are considered to be one of the major contributors to air pollutants in urban areas. As the number of motor vehicles increases, the impact of traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs) on human health has also increased in recent years. People are easily exposed to TRAPs in their daily lives. However, long-term exposure to TRAPs can have adverse health effects. Mobile monitoring is more flexible compared to traditional urban monitoring stations and can effectively obtain the spatial variation characteristics of air pollutants. We mounted a sensor package on an electric bicycle and conducted mobile measurements of CO, NO2 and SO2 on a circular road in the center of Shaoxing, a city in the center of the Yangtze Delta, China. The CO, NO2 and SO2 concentrations were observed to be higher in the morning and evening rush hours, and the three pollutants show different seasonal and spatial variation characteristics. CO concentration was higher in urban arterial and crossroads. NO2 concentration was variable, alternating between high and low concentrations. SO2 concentration was relatively stable and aggregated. This study provides important information on the spatial and temporal variations of TRAPs, which helps commuters understand how to effectively reduce pollutant exposure during personal travel. BackgroundLead is a ubiquitous toxicant following three compartment kinetics with the longest half-life found in bones. Patella and tibia lead levels-validated measures of cumulative exposure-require specialized X-ray-fluorescence-spectroscopy available only in a few centers worldwide. We developed minimally invasive biomarkers reflecting individual cumulative lead exposure using blood DNA methylation profiles-obtainable via Illumina 450K or IlluminaEPIC bead-chip assays.MethodsWe developed and tested two methylation-based biomarkers from 348 Normative Aging Study (NAS) elderly men. We selected methylation sites with strong associations with bone lead levels via robust regressions analysis and constructed the biomarkers using elastic nets. Results were validated in a NAS subset, reporting specificity, and sensitivity.FindingsParticipants were 73 years old on average (standard deviation, SD = 6), with moderate lead levels of (mean ± SD patella: 27 ± 18 µg/g; tibia:21 ± 13 µg/g). Methylation-based biomarkers for lead in patella and tibia included 59 and 138 DNA methylation sites, respectively. Estimated lead levels were significantly correlated with actual measured values, (r = 0.62 patella, r = 0.59 tibia) and had low mean square error (MSE) (MSE = 0.68 patella, MSE = 0.53 tibia). Means and distributions of the estimated and actual lead levels were not significantly different across patella and tibia bones (p > 0.05). Methylation-based biomarkers discriminated participants highly exposed (>median) to lead with a specificity of 74 and 73% for patella and tibia lead levels, respectively, with 70% sensitivity.InterpretationDNA methylation-based lead biomarkers are novel tools that can be used to reconstruct decades' worth of individual cumulative lead exposure using only blood DNA methylation profiles and may help identify the consequences of cumulative exposure.

In livestock houses, particulate matter (PM) is a critical factor not only for disease and odor spread but also for the work environment. In particular, workers are exposed to high concentrations of organic particulate matter and harmful gases while performing their tasks, and, as they age, they become more vulnerable to respiratory diseases. This study analyzed the PM concentrations in commercial broiler houses, focusing on the differences in ventilation rates according to the season and the type of work, categorized into a static work period (SWP) and dynamic work period (DWP). In the regional monitoring using gravimetric methods, the average PM concentrations were found to be within acceptable limits, with TSP at 1042 µg/m3, PM-10 at 718 µg/m3, and PM-2.5 at 137 µg/m3. These values did not exceed the recommended exposure limits for inhalable dust at 2400 µg/m3 and respirable dust at 160 µg/m3 in chicken farmers. However, in the personal monitoring using a real-time aerosol spectrometer, it was revealed that the aerosol concentrations during DWP exceeded the standards by up to 214%. Specifically, during DWP, the concentrations were 1.74 times higher for TSP, 1.40 times higher for PM-10, and 1.22 times higher for PM-2.5 compared to SWP. It was observed that during the movement of workers, the physical generation of particles around 10 µm, such as feed and bedding, occurred due to the movement of chickens, which influenced the aerosol concentration.

Hair salons use many hair products that have toxic chemicals in them. These toxic chemicals include volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, and particulate matter. Daily exposure to these pollutants causes severe health issues in the long run. This study aims to find the concentration of the air pollutants such as PM1, PM2.5, PM10, TVOC, CO2, and formaldehyde in four hair salons located in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. In this paper, we propose an IoT-based air quality monitoring system with integrated sensors to monitor the concentration of air pollutants remotely via ThingSpeak data analytics cloud platform in hair salons. The maximum 15 min average concentration values of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 were 128, 154, and 169 µg/m3 respectively. The TVOC levels exhibited a rapid increase of about 80–90% during facials and hair gel application and a peak value of about 5248.25 ppb was measured at salon 2. Also, weekend and weekday comparison is done. It was found that the weekend concentrations of the measured pollutants are comparatively higher than weekday concentrations. After analyzing the pollutant concentration, the effects of primary health parameters such as blood pressure and pulse rate of the hairdressers are measured. One-third of the hairdressers displayed high blood pressure values with a maximum of 161/104 which falls under stage 2 hypertension. Also, secondary parameters such as temperature, humidity, ventilation type, and number of customers are also measured. From the overall analysis, it is suggested that adequate ventilation and regulated product usage are said to reduce the effects of indoor air pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Delhi is a commercial city and the people's living standard is also comparatively high. Due to that, different active security agencies hire security guards and deploy them in various areas to protect people and properties. These security guards generally perform their duties outside the premises or near the roadside, leading to their continuous exposure to different size fractions of particulate matter. The present study is an effort to analyze the security guards' exposure to different size particulate matter (PM2.5, PM1, PM0.5, and PM0.25) and toxic metals in different urban environments. The study showed that the PM2.5 concentrations were higher at all the selected locations, while the construction site depicted the highest concentration of all-size particles among all the identified locations. The ratio of PM1/PM2.5 was observed to be higher and indicated more contribution of PM1 size particles, specifically in commercial, construction, and roadside areas. After analyzing heavy metal presence in PM2.5 and PM1, out of 11 heavy metals, six metals (Fe, Cu, Pb, Cr, Mg, Zn) were found below the detection limit. Mg was found at higher concentrations in commercial, construction, and industrial areas in PM2.5 and PM1, while Zn was also found at higher concentrations in PM2.5 and PM1 at the roadside and residential sites. There are certain spatial configurations in cities that generate areas with reduced ventilation where, consequently, air pollution can reach hazardous levels. Although urban forms have already been flagged as a factor affecting air pollution, its role in the accumulation of volatile organic compounds has not been extensively evaluated with field measurements. In order to investigate the effect of urban morphology on air pollution levels, we measured the concentration of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) in 44 different city sites, using Radiello® diffusive passive samplers during a 1-week campaign. This work presents a method that maps a city in zones with different levels of atmospheric dispersion by analyzing the proportions of BTEX in the ambient air. The method applied to a coastal city (characterized by uniform wind patterns) revealed the existence of two clearly differentiated zones. In one of them, the mean benzene concentration was 3.26 times higher than in the other. However, the mean concentrations of the rest of BTEX were barely the same in both areas. These findings suggest that slow degradation pollutants (i.e., benzene) accumulate in poor ventilated areas, whereas faster degradation pollutants do not show accumulation. The conclusions of this study can be particularly useful in designing personal exposure assessments, optimizing the urban morphology, and improving the location of air quality monitoring stations. Exposure assessment in children, especially young children, presents difficulties not found with adults. Simple silicone wristbands are passive samplers that have potential applicability in exposure studies of children. We investigated the performance of silicone wristbands as personal nicotine samplers in two wristbands worn by a child (n = 31) for 7 days and for 2 days (worn day 5 to day 7). We compared levels of nicotine in wristbands with urinary cotinine, a metabolite of nicotine, measured in the child's urine obtained on day 7. Children were recruited who were exposed to contaminants in tobacco smoke and/or vapor from electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS; commonly known as electronic cigarettes or EC) as well as children who lived in nonsmoking homes. Caregivers were interviewed to obtain reported measures of the child's exposure. Analysis was by liquid chromatography with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry and isotope dilution (LC-MS/MS).
